Hi! What are your favorite Wenclair fics?👀
Tumblr media
I’m so glad you asked and I’m about to be so extra.
This fandom is beyond talented and I have many favourites. So I might as well make this an official Prefer-to-be-vilified Wenclair Fic Rec Masterlist… post (name could use some work but you get the idea).
I’m going to try to remember/link all my favourites but I’ll probably (definitely) forget some. And also I obviously haven’t read every Wenclair fic out there, my ‘to-read’ list is intimidatingly long and personal preferences are going to play a part in the fics I have included. But if I’ve missed some hidden gems please let me know!
Under the cut because this got long…
One-Shots/Short Chapter Fics:
the Witch & the Wyld by ohHOLYmoves - Long one-shot, Wednesday’s a witch who lives in the woods, Enid’s a werewolf stuck in her wolf form, need I say more?
Reset by Eggplant_Crusader - The OG. Probably the first fic read by a good portion of this fandom. Short, sweet, what the miscommunication trope is supposed to be.
her heart is a bird on a spit in her chest by lensbian_dykely - Long one-shot, Wednesday tells her parents that her and Enid are together without informing Enid.
What does he have that I don’t? by kofeew_milkk - Jealous Enid meets Werewolf instincts.
hello there, it’s me, the bull in the china shop by bogteats - Established Wenclair, 5+1 fic leading up to their first time.
I Think I Love You by tawen - Enid gets dosed with truth serum, Enid’s in love with Wednesday…
I Can Hear Your Heartbeat by LesbihonestGuys - Wednesday is a simp coming to terms with being in love and she’s real mad about it.
sandbox love by hanjisgirlfriend - Childhood friends falling in love.
gifts from a cat by Rennajade - Wednesday being a weirdo.
She’s my mate, Yoko! by lovely_shadow_minx - Enid realises Wednesday’s her mate and freaks out about it.
i tend to handle things usually by myself and i can’t ever seem to try and ask for help by Charlie_Balle - Wednesday’s actually allergic to colour.
The Art of Courting by Athems - Wednesday tries to court Enid but Enid thinks she’s threatening her.
Please (Just This Once) by whitebeltwriter - Wednesday trying to prevent a vision and the very emotional aftermath.
Wednesday Finds a Puppy by whitebeltwriter - Wednesday finds a random puppy in the woods and thinks it’s Enid… it’s not Enid.
Are You Going To Claim Your Prize? by wintersdume - The furs make a bet over who can get Wednesday’s number, Enid gets jealous.
It’s the Uniform, Isn’t it? by wintersdume - Enid plays baseballs, Wednesday gay panics.
Mobile Etiquette by Axinite25 - Wednesday not understanding the nuisances of teenage dating/friendship.
fuel the pyre of your enemies by heliamphoria - Wenclair meet cute while committing crimes.
Scrapped Scenes by MomochiZoey - Enid’s nosy and discovers that Wednesday’s self insert Viper now has a blonde love interest.
Premonition’s Embrace by whitebeltwriter - Wednesday has a vision that forces her to admit her feelings for Enid.
if she grabs for your hand (she might want a kiss) by ipretendtobesane - Short love confession, adorable.
Stormy Weather by SspiltDecision - Wednesday’s scared of thunder, Enid helps her.
don’t talk to me or my scary goth gf ever again by Kybee1497 - Protective (slightly feral) Enid and Xavier not taking a hint.
Complete Long Fics:
Terms of Endearment by Calchexxis - AU future fic/they didn’t meet at Nevermore, Enid goes to the Addams family for help after being kicked out of her pack for not being able to wolf-out but Wednesday’s the only one home, Wednesday has visions every time they touch about different versions of them/their ancestors throughout history, SIMPING, the worlds gayest mystery, I’ve read it several times and it always hits.
Forged in Blood by RiseAboveTheAshes_203 - Post season 1, I don’t know how to describe it other than angsty devotion, if for some insane reason you haven’t read this fic do it now.
The San Francisco Incident by Apeoflight - AU future fic/they don’t meet at Nevermore, Omegaverse, Werewolf mates, falling in love, real smutty, what’s not to love?
the nature of idiosyncrasies by bogteats - One of the fics I managed to catch early on and I was OBSESSED, AU, future fic, they weren’t friends at Nevermore but Enid had a crush, Omegaverse, their dynamic in this is to die for, angsty, smutty, a real and honest portrayal of not only Wenclair but people and love in general, read it, that was a threat, if you already have read it again.
raven in the den, wolf in the nest by Barbara_Lazuli - Canon divergence, fake dating to annoy Esther Sinclair, full honesty I read this awhile ago so I’m not 100% certain what happens but I remember enjoying it, might need to do a re-read.
black marked sun by chasinghours - AU college/university, Wednesday’s Yoko and Bianca’s roommate and Enid becomes infatuated, very cute, a little angsty but nothing crazy, shy Wednesday??? if I remember correctly, gay pining, we love to see it.
Purgatory Would Be Beautiful With You by EmilyWritesStuff - In universe, WEREWOLF MATES (aka the best Wenclair trope), fun and easy read, each chapter is like a slice of their life as mates.
Dance With Wolves by wolfwars - Fake dating BUT Wednesday doesn’t realise that it’s fake (because Enid was vague af), Enid’s pining, Wednesday’s confused, great idea and really well executed.
You Are my Moon by Bee-nut - Fake dating except Wednesday commits to the bit so hard she ends up facing off against Enid’s family aka a pack of werewolves in various dangerous challenges in order to win Enid’s hand, great idea, loved every minute of it.
Old Wounds by Sharpen_your_hatchet - Wenclair reunite years after graduation, less falling in love more realising they were always in love and coming to terms with that, sweet and easy read.
So This Is Love by LoriLoud - Unhinged Murderous Wenclair… no further explanation needed.
La Petite Mort by Apeoflight AND Wednesday’s Pet by Apeoflight - Smut, they’re both smut fics, I cannot remember which was which plot wise, but same author, they’re both really good and with a good helping of falling in love, yearning, denial of feelings, miscommunication, angst… all the good stuff.
Vortex by ALotOfConfusion - Need a refresher but childhood friends to lovers, little Wednesday wants to study werewolves and I remember enjoying it.
Puppy Love by Vaniloqu3nce - Enid’s wolf starts talking to her after recognising Wednesday as their mate, havoc follows, great read.
yours, eurydice by hanjisgirlfriend - AU, future fic, they never met at Nevermore, Wednesday’s a writer, Enid’s an actress, they live across the hall from each other, they write each other love letters and fall in love, cute af, a little angsty but not too heavy, definitely a must read.
It’s hard to espresso my feelings for you by SquishiestRose - Coffee shop AU, Wednesday works at the Weathervane and she has it BAD, the platonic Wyler this world needs, a little angsty but nothing crazy, cute, fun read.
Spell It Out by forgot_my_art - A spell gone wrong leads to both a misunderstanding and an accidental proposal… I mean it’s Wenclair, of course it did, fun read.
A raven’s dream of wolf by tokyocorgi - AU future fic/they never met at Nevermore, Wednesday’s sex dreams are also prophecy’s of her future, we love to see it.
All That’s Best of Dark and Bright by Porcie - Wednesday runs from her feelings post season 1, they reunite years later, Wednesday has a vision that forces her to stay in Enid’s life and by extension forces her to confront her feelings, they’re in love the entire time while pretending they aren’t, almost soulmate-ish, a bit angsty, but a fun read.
On-Going Long Fics:
[friendly reminder to read in-progress fic as a way to encourage and support our talented writers]
I’d Eat the Sun Just to Feel Your Warmth in my Bones by MsMio - AU college/university, I still need to catch up but ANGST, childhood friends, a very interesting take on the Addams family curse, Wednesday suffers from chronic pain, a good sad read but a hopeful one.
our immeasurable ties that bind by bogteats - Fantasy type AU, some very interesting world building, Enid wakes up pregnant with no idea who she is, where she is, or how she got there, super excited to see where this goes.
Blood and Shadows by DarkVisitors - Historical AU, western vibes, angst, horny gay yearning, a vague line in the summary that alludes to them being forced to marry at gun point but it hasn’t happened yet, I am beyond invested.
A Kidnapping By Any Other Name by RavenMoon33 - Wednesday “kidnaps” Enid to spend the break with her at the Addams Estate, I’m still catching up but Wenclair antics meets Addams Family antics, Wednesday’s having visions, there’s a mystery afoot and it’s linked to Wednesday’s ancestors. I might try to squeeze in another chapter later today actually 👀 (I didn’t read the OG so no spoilers!)
Whatever This Is… by CautiouslyPessimistic - A NEW FAKE DATING AU! In universe, takes place at Nevermore, only 2 chapters so far, but well written and I’m excited to see more.
Well… That’s Knew by Chaos_of_the_valkyries - Post season 1, Enid presents as a werewolf alpha and your honour they’re mates, protective Enid, Wednesday going soft, apparently I’ve missed the last two updates??? A crime, I will be rectifying that asap.
The Bite that Binds, the Gift that Gives by TieDyeKing - Historical Fantasy-ish AU, Wenclair arranged marriage, immediate connection but they’re being cautious/don’t trust each other, beautiful imagery/world building, an intriguing plot, Esther Sinclair being Esther Sinclair (aka causing problems), only a few chapters but one of my favourites since forever ago, in love with this fic and you should be too.
Symbiotic Relationship by SquishiestRose - AU future fic/they don’t meet at Nevermore, Enid gets kicked out of her pack and ends up desperate enough that she accepts a job working as the live in servant of a woman she’s pretty sure is going to kill her (hint: it’s just Wednesday being her normal off putting self), I’m a sucker for future fics with a very isolated and lonely Wednesday learning to fall in love and this is that.

Since you've covered a pretty big bit of the manga so far, can I ask what are your opinions on it? Deeper than just the quick reactions you've shared with us so far.
What are your opinions about the manga's characters? Its pacing? The mystery element? The magic system? What areas do you think it succeeds, and what areas do you think could be better?
I understand if you're reversing judgment until you finish, but you've also read quite a bit of the story so far. Idk, I'm just curious!
Especially seeing as you're a writer yourself, so I imagine you have a different perspective on how the story functions as, well, a story!
Tumblr media
Oh, hmmm... that's an interesting question.
As of right now I'm on chapter 35-36 so I'm about a third through the story. The first major arc (find dragon, yoink falin out of its body, etc) has kinda happened, and we're hitting some larger world arcs.
As you mentioned, I DO want to withold judgement but for now... But I will say what I think thus far, with full awareness that my mind might be changed later depending on circumstances.
Comment 1: The manga is finished! Actually, just knowing that makes me feel like it's a more cohesive storyline.
Maybe I'm boring, but I'm not a huge fan of neverending storylines in general. Naruto, Bleach, etc. They have their place in the forever-young-monster-of-the-week genre, and I know why so many manga just keep... on... publishing....... but I feel like there's a lot of merit to being able to just wrap up a story and say 'there, that's how it ends'.
Comment 2: Laios is very well developed, even at this point of the story. Senshi remains a mystery. Marcille... speedran her arc?
I think this is the closest thing I have to a criticism. While I think Laios' character is well-paced in its revelations throughout the series (the slow ramp-up from 'oh this guy is weird' to 'oh, this guy is a freak club card carrying member' to 'oh, this guy is the freak club president' was great!) Marcille is.... a little more of a mystery to me.
Now, perhaps my memory is bad. But I did find her turnaround at the end of the Red Dragon arc a bit... out of the blue?
Don't get me wrong. I think it's entirely believable. But I wish there had been more hints - or rather, more visible progress of her studies of ancient magic. I know it's been mentioned, and there WAS that chapter of her and Falin during their school years... but watching episode 2 of the show on netflix when she goes 'I feel useless, my magic doesn't help anyone :(' and then reading the manga and seeing her straight up go from 0 to 100 as she decides "we're gonna rearrange falin's bones and then I'mma raise her using this ancient technique I've been studying all along that I didn't tell you about because it was sus" is... a little bit of a turn?
Maybe it's on purpose! Maybe, when I read further about her personal journey, the pieces will fall into place more neatly. But compared to the rest of the characters, which seem relatively steady in their reveals (Laios, Chillchuck, Senshi) Marcille took a bit of a turn.
Which, again, isn't bad! It just seems contrasted to the rest of the team.
Comment 3: The magic system is more like a magic ecology.
Actually, in the beginning, I found the magic system Marcille used very vague. It was just a 'do what needs to be done' type of power with very few apparent limits or power balances aside from 'sometimes you run out of mana'. But I think at this point, I'm beginning to assume that the details of the magic are closer to the functions of an ecosystem or an organism, and therefore WHAT the magic does is kind of moot point. Marcille is just a little bacteria inside of the great intestine labyrinth of the dungeon, and she is using its energy to survive, like a sort of microfauna.
Comment 4: Man, the worldbuilding is cool. It's so cool.
I don't think I've seen another story that goes so deeply into dungeon ecosystems before this one. Not only are the people who live there fleshed out in terms of individual cultures and traditions and norms, there are also monsters that serve as a natural fauna that inhabits the halls of what OUGHT to be a mindless 'turn left and fall into a trap' setting!
There's sticking monsters into your world, and then there's 'digging out a trench 1 meter deep, pre-soaking the soil, inserting monster's roots lovingly into the spot, and then covering it with fertilizer and spritzing the leaves'. I don't doubt that there ARE other works that go into this level of detail, but the dedication and the ideas Kui-san has for this very much makes the dungeon a living part of this entire tale. :)
I'll probably have more to say later but for now.. that's about it!

Why was Aziraphale and Crowley's joint miracle so powerful?
They try to make it as tiny and insignificant as possible. A fraction of a miracle. And yet it turns out to be a massive one, with power enough to raise 25 people from the dead. A power that only the mightiest of the Archangels should have at their disposal.
Why?
Theory #1: It's love.
That one must be the most popular one. It just has to. Because that's what Good Omens are all about to many fans, myself included. Aziraphale and Crowley share a very special bond and hence when they join forces they create magic.
Theory #2: It's them
Let's not dismiss the simplest explanation - the miracle was powerful because the ones performing it were powerful. If you think it's too simple to be particularly interesting, think again.
There are many hints this season that Crowley used to be a big shot before the Fall. One of them is actually the miracle in question, or rather Crowley's words to Shax when she questions him about it.
But there are some things about Aziraphale that raise eyebrows too. Mainly, how he always seems to need Crowley's help to control a single person but then is suddenly puppeteering a room full of people.
I'm just saying, with a memory wipe canonized, everybody's identity is a potential mystery now.
Theory #3: It's a fusion
Renegade or not, Aziraphale is an angel and Crowley is a demon. Their powers are opposites and if applied at once would just cancel each other out. Like fire and water that represent them, right? Right?
Well, opposite is often just a synonym for complementary.
I think it's entirely possible it isn't just about Aziraphale and Crowley personally but simply about celestial and infernal power. I wouldn't be surprised that combined they can do things neither can separately.
Theory #4: It's Gabriel
This one is a bit underwhelming and I doubt it would be to many people's liking. But can we address the fact that the plume was kind of purple? Okay, it was more pinkish than Gabriel's trademark lilac-violet, but still. I think by holding hands our boys made Gabe not just an object of the miracle, but a participant too.
Theory #5: It's the portal
That's another one that might feel disappointing, but it's something I've noticed and I'm excited about it.
Just look.
Episode 1: when Aziraphale and Crowley decide to do half a miracle each, Crowley asks Gabriel to sit on the chair which he puts on top of this light-coloured, very worn circular rug.
Tumblr media
Episode 5: when the bookshop is under attack, Aziraphale decides to use the portal against demons. We can see it was covered with a completely different rug - a burgundy one - so probably a different spot, right? Aziraphale must own at least a dozen circular rugs.
Tumblr media
However.
Episode 6: when Crowley cleans the bookshop, he covers the portal with the same light rug we saw in episode 1 in the miracle scene.
Tumblr media
Normally I'd say that if we saw the burgundy rug removed from the portal, it means it was under the burgundy rug the entire time and it was Crowley who put another one over it afterwards. After all, Aziraphale doesn't exactly strike me as the redecorating type.
Except he decided to host a ball in the meantime and we saw him redecorate for that.
So when Crowley puts the light rug over the portal, it's very likely he is in fact putting things back to how they originally were.
What I'm saying is when Aziraphale and Crowley performed their miracle, Gabriel was sitting directly over the portal connecting the bookshop to Heaven. Sure, it was closed, but it still might have given the whole thing a boost.
Personally, I think it was the combination of all of the above.
What do you think?

Not sure if this is where you want your asks to be sent or not, I'm new to your blog so sorry if this is the wrong place
There is another instruction for Wally that I haven't seen you talk about and I want to know your thoughts! Back in november, before the responses, the secret URLs (such as woxyve) had the word "delete" added to the end (ex: woxyvedelete) implying that they wanted Wally to delete the page. After this most recent update it changed again and now says nodelete meaning that Wally refused to do that task. Thoughts?
where else would asks be sent if not the Askbox! inbox! both!
i actually wasn't aware of this until a few days ago, when i saw a post pointing it out - i had never gone directly back to those pages. which serves me right! i'm gonna be double checking Everything from now on lmao
but my fucking GOD is it interesting. thus far Wally has been... fairly cooperative. he's had a moment here and there, such as closing the guest book and losing his patience a lil, but he does his best with the rest! especially with requests! so for him to straight up go "lmao nah" when asked to delete something...
characterization-wise, i think it's very telling. as of now, Wally has been commonly portrayed as a bit of a doormat - getting talked over, sitting off to the side, being a bit of a background character - in in-Home media. less so in his whrp/qa/You interactions, but he's still widely agreeable & willing. but him refusing to delete the urls gives major points to him Having A Spine. he's holding his ground. he knows what he's doing. he's not going to let the whrp shut him up. there's a Thought Process / Plan / Purpose being shown here, or at least hinted at. there's a sense of.... Control. of "this is the way we're doing things, this is what i'm saying and you're going to sit down and listen" it's just... such a shift from the Wally we see in his interactions with the neighbors. which again, lends credence to there being a time discrepancy, with whrp Wally being older and more "experienced" while past Wally is still figuring his shit [being alive] out <3
story-wise it adds some Delightful friction. like obviously there's already tension, what with the staff only page, "Let Me In", the mysterious black stuff, the guest book closing, and the whrp/qa being disturbed by it all. but Wally outright refusing to delete things is a Different sort of conflict. it's more... direct. which makes sense! his interactions with the whrp/qa are becoming more personal, too. but it lends to the feeling of a push-pull. as the whrp/qa investigates Wally and starts treating him like the person he is instead of a long-lost character, they're probably gonna clash (a lot) despite the apparent impulse to pursue Welcome Home. currently, Wally doesn't seem big on compromising. if he doesn't know what to do, it looks like he simply Won't or he'll do his own thing and be like "shrug". if he doesn't want to do something, it also looks like he simply Will Not.
of course, there's the strong possibility that the whrp Were Not Serious about it. the 'delete' command might have them testing the waters, poking the bear, etc. but then were they testing to see if Wally is there, or were they testing his level of compliance? both? a secret third option?
and if they Were serious about it... why? what is it about the marked urls that made the whrp go "get that outta here"? and why couldn't they delete it themselves? i mean, obviously they can't delete anything Wally adds, otherwise the extra stuff he's added probably wouldn't be there (unless the impulse / curiosity driving them is too strong to delete anything added). but there's still a why about it. what changed so fundamentally in the site's code - or laws of physics/reality - that made it impossible to alter Wally's additions?
it's just. i feel that there are a lot of implications in such a small interaction. it shows more than one would expect.
#I JUST. AGH#idk if i said any of this in a way that makes sense#how would/do the whrp/qa react to that? to him being like 'we are Not deleting this <3'#whether they were serious about it or not thats Gotta raise some feelings#were they scared? frustrated? shocked? vindicated?#MAN IM SO CURIOUS#wally said no! the whrp asked and He Said No!#i mean to be fair#from what we know about wally - both from shared trivia/thoughts and the main canon#he doesnt seem hesitant to say No in general#but still. with almost everything else asked of him he Tried. he made an effort. hm#homebogging#rambles from the bog#wh speculation#welcome home speculation#AND THEN - OH THIS IS A TANGENT!#about him flipping sally's portrait. HOW THE FUCK? its technically a 2-d image. there isn't a back#so did wally make a back - or did his Direct Interaction bend reality and make it so that there's one to show?#fucking Fascinating. i mean i already have a lot of thoughts on reality fuckery in this story but mmmmm man. implications.#or - oh or - are the character portraits The Characters. this is a crack theory but hm#the fact that there are tiny versions of some of the neighbors in their houses on the map. trapped inside. multiple franks.#you see what im getting at?#not to say that they're trapped in the site! but what if there's a direct Connection. the character and the art aren't explicitly separate#as implied with wally's 'every time you look into my eyes' / 'you draw mine'#if his art has a direct link to him - Is him in a sense - why wouldn't that be the case for the others#huh. i wonder if they'll ever sense it like he does. will they ever look back? will their pupils slowly start to look at the screen?#i mean the teeny eddie in the post office is looking straight out at us but yk. Inch Resting.

More Outfit Analysis
During recovery after the amusement park, Vanitas and Noé are both wearing light colored clothing.
Usually both have more black. But when they’re both vulnerable, Noé is in all light colors, and Vanitas tries to keep some darkness with his coat, but it doesn’t hide his change in appearance beneath.
They’re making up after a fight. They’re having a good domestic time. Domi’s in on it too, wearing a dress and shawl to match Noé’s softness.
-
Their temporary costume changes are even more interesting. Domi emphasizes that clothing is a performance, putting on Amelia’s clothes and wondering aloud if she’d look like that as a normal person.
She’s playing a little pretend in the same way she does with Louis, but for once it’s her exploring her own identity. Who would she be if she didn’t have to worry about courtly politics?
Vanitas, meanwhile, is unexpected to a degree. He chooses to wear very respectable clothing in all black, with a coat over his shoulders echoing his usual one. The strangest part to me?
No bows. Not anywhere that I can see. They’re replaced aesthetically by ropes and a tie.
I’d let it slide for any other series, but Vanitas and his love of bows have been clearly established in-universe. What this implies depends on how you interpret the ribbons in his regular outfit. Let’s define it as a hint to his femininity for this one.
In his new performative outfit overall, he’s dark and mysterious and completely masculine, dressed like you might expect an actual doctor to be on any random off-day. There is no Luna. He isn’t wearing any blue at all.
Both characters choose to perform their gender roles more intensely than usual, because if it weren’t for the influence of their families (Louis and Luna), they wouldn’t have explored their gender expressions like they have.
This is an alternate reality where Dominique is just a common maiden, and Vanitas is just a common doctor. They both want that on some level. To not have gone through what they have, and to release the weight on their shoulders.
-
When you put Vanitas in his new outfit next to Noé in his little pajamas, which he has not changed since he doesn’t perform much of anything, it’s clearly intentional. All light and all dark. But Vanitas seems to be accepting the light, so that’s at least good.
Would be great if it didn’t look like he was dead though
-
Bonus Analysis:
Jeanne wears no black at all, but the coffin casing for Carpe Diem is black. Her darkness traces back to all the lives she took in the war.

If you’re still doing the ship game, what are your thoughts on Voldemort/Tonks? (Inspired mostly by the comparisons between Tonks and Bellatrix in the most recent chapter of One Year in Every Ten.)
anon, thank you so much for this ask - which has, to be quite honest, upended my world.
because i'd literally never thought about this ship before, but now i realise that i'm not only in line for a passport to vonks nation, i appear to be an accidental vonks sleeper cell...
i always write both bellatrix and andromeda as having personality types which map on very closely to the tonks we meet in order of the phoenix - funny, clumsy, cheeky, charismatic, bright, a bit naive, and possessed of an outrageous fashion sense.
there isn't a shipping reason behind this. it started way back when i was planning nor all that glisters gold and thinking about andromeda, and i realised i've never vibed with a fanon tendency to make her this incredibly haughty ice queen, and to suggest that all of tonks' vibrant or insincere personality traits are inherited from ted.
obviously - yes - andromeda doesn't come across as massively welcoming in her only canon appearance, but i think she can be forgiven this on the grounds that harry and hagrid have just destroyed half her garden, revealed that her daughter might have been murdered in a surprise death eater ambush, and shouted at her when harry mistakes her for bellatrix.
but nor, actually, does ted. and so i think it makes much more sense to imagine that they're both a bit curt because of the enormously dangerous situation they find themselves in, and that - outside of that context - andromeda is just as likely to be a great laugh as he is.
i should also say that i am really not a fan of the sort of "omg aristocrats are so brooding and mysterious" way of writing many of the pureblood characters in the series. and one of the things about this which i don't like is the way it reduces characters to gendered stereotypes, while rarely seeming to think critically about the actual gendered conventions which govern their lives we get a hint of in canon.
pureblood women are often reduced to descriptors such as "haughty", "mannered", "prim", "icy", and so on - and, yes, all of these are traits which are implied canonically about bellatrix and andromeda [and narcissa, sirius, and regulus as well...], but they are not traits which have to exist separately from ones we would associate with tonks.
because bellatrix is - canonically - both haughty and theatrical; both cruel and loyal; both in thrall to voldemort and willing to answer him back [it's always overlooked, i think, that, in half-blood prince she reveals that she's told the dark lord to his face that he's wrong to trust snape - that takes a pretty strong nerve!].
she's clever but not particularly cunning [she's a blunt instrument - subtlety is not her strong point]; incredibly charismatic [harry always notices her whenever she's in a room] but also quite artless interpersonally; entirely committed to her prejudiced beliefs and also clearly a little bit naive... her anger when harry says that voldemort's a half-blood in order of the phoenix is really striking when compared to the fact that lucius malfoy doesn't bat an eyelid - i have always thought that more of the death eaters are aware of voldemort's birth name and background than dumbledore believes, which malfoy basically confirms, and so i really like the insight this gives us into what bellatrix is unwilling to move beyond when it comes to the version of voldemort she has in her head.
and she's also someone who is clearly very affection-starved - and who can be written on the basis of her canon personality to be something of a hopeless romantic, and for the vision of romance she has to be quite idealistic and a bit girly. and this doesn't prevent her being a sadistic bigot who knows exactly what she's doing in the slightest - it just adds another layer to her character which i think is really interesting to explore.
i really like the complicated dissonance of her being proud to be the loyal lieutenant of a terrorist kingpin she believes is capable of magic beyond her wildest dreams and who rewards her for her service by not murdering her, and also her wishing to be wooed and sent roses and taken out dancing by a man who has never had the slightest intention of doing any such thing.
tonks also has that idealistic romantic streak - after all, she takes one look at the giant red flag lupin's waving and says "you son-of-a-bitch, i'm in" - and she also has the brains, charisma, bluntness, theatricality, loyalty, and ruthlessness of her aunt.
as an aside - i also really like these tonks-bellatrix comparisons because they undermine one of the series' lazier narrative conventions when it comes to writing women: that straightforwardly bad women can never have anything substantial in common with straightforwardly good ones. petunia has to be nothing like lily, for example, because lily is the series' central pinnacle of womanhood and petunia is a bitch.
the idea that tonks gets all the fun parts of her personality from her father is an offshoot of this. but i really like the fact that realising she is very like bellatrix would force harry et al. to actually reckon with the reality of what bellatrix did and to think critically, in contrast to the ministry's view that everything's fine with voldemort dead, about the conditions which enabled her radicalisation.
[i've written something touching briefly on this - everlasting ink - in which harry and ginny end up adopting delphini and discover she's both her mother's daughter and the reincarnation of a woman they adored.]
but to return, dazed and bleeding, to the vonks agenda...
it's an incontrovertible truth that voldemort mainly likes bellatrix because of her fanatical devotion to him, which enables him to use her freely as a tool for his own gain.
but this is not - i think it's reasonable to argue - the only reason he likes her. after all, she's not the only death eater who goes to azkaban rather than betray him, but he's not going around calling rabastan his favourite...
and her slight bolshiness evidently does contribute to his fondness for her.
the canonical voldemort clearly thinks of himself [even if, let's be real, he's wrong] as someone who doesn't like sycophants. he has no interest in hearing nott sr. gab at him following his resurrection; he is perfectly happy to be told by augustus rookwood that the way he's being going about trying to retrieve the prophecy is wrong; one of the things which drives his humiliation of lucius malfoy in the dark lord ascending is that he's fully aware that the malfoys hate having him squatting in their house, but that lucius would never have the backbone to tell him this. his trust in snape is implied, particularly in deathly hallows, to be connected to what he perceives as a frankness in the way snape speaks to him - him telling snape that he "sounds like lucius" just before he kills him is a way of him letting snape know that he thinks he's being shifty [which - of course - he thinks is because snape knows he's the true master of the elder wand].
he is also theatrical, charismatic, interpersonally offputting [in a context where you weren't afraid of him, think how annoying his tendency to witter would be], clever, strangely loyal [i talk about this a lot, but the fact that he berates wormtail for betraying james and lily - even though this is exactly what he wanted - is really striking], transcendentally attention-starved, and so on. and he clearly respects the idea of constructing one's own identity in defiance of social convention - his favour permits bellatrix to behave in a way which is clearly unusual for a woman of her social class and snape to be ranked higher than richer purebloods who should look down on him, for example.
and he's also - in his own way - a little bit of an idealist too. the elaborate fantasy he's shown to have constructed for himself as a child - that his father was a wizard [who, i presume, he imagines will reveal himself after dumbledore's visit, now that it's safe to do so], that his mother wouldn't have died if she'd mattered, that his father doesn't emerge because he's also dead [he doesn't realise he's alive until he visits morfin!] - is something he uses to self-soothe, and he's hugely rattled by anything which undermines his belief in this dreamscape. just as bellatrix is by any hint that he's not an almighty pureblood god.
and, above and beyond this - even though this is a much more controversial thing to say - he's also capable of being a hopeless romantic himself when he wants to be... it's astonishing to me that we as a fandom don't make more of the fact that he thinks that his parents were in love, that tom riddle sr. was responsible for naming him [even though he's shown in chamber of secrets to know that merope chose his names], and that his father only abandoned his mother because she revealed her magic to him. there is absolutely no chance that he heard this from either morfin or tom sr. - he just makes it up! - and yet he clearly believes, even as an adult, that there was a world of happy families he was denied by his father's lack of chivalry. and i think this adds a really interesting dimension to his obvious loneliness which is tremendous fun to explore.
in a context where the fact that she's an order member is insignificant to him, then, i think it's entirely plausible that he wouldn't hate tonks - which is, for him, essentially a proposal of marriage - on the basis of her similarity to his erstwhile fave.
and tonks, for her part, clearly has a horrible weakness for cruel, emotionally-unavailable, self-loathing men who are cheerfully capable of murder.
i don't not back it...
as a postscript, my two favourite tonks-voldemort moments in canon: the fact that, in the middle of planning a coup, he's taken time out of his day to learn that she's married lupin [it's giving xoxo gossip girl!]; and the fact that her wasting away from unrequited love in half-blood prince is exactly what happens to merope.

c and s for venti maybe? for the recent x reader prompts. I love the way you characterize him thank you for your works they brighten my day <33
and you, nonnie, brightened up my day with such a sweet message!! i’m really glad you like the way i portray venti, he’s a tricky one to get right but that’s what makes him interesting, yes? hope you enjoy <3
x reader alphabet over here!
.•° ✿ °•.
c - courtship, what do they do to hint at wanting to get together? is it obvious they’re courting you or subtle?
venti is not one to outright say that he’s taken interest in someone, much less be loud about it that it becomes obnoxious. on the contrary, he’s actually rather quiet about it. he’s elusive and seems to enjoy being a mystery—you’re never even exactly sure if he does see you in a romantic light.
on the surface, he acts very much the same. he’s always been a kind individual with a penchant for mischief, sticking close to anything and anyone that catches his fancy. he’s elusive and mysterious. it’s hard to get a hold of him, much like the winds that blow in mondstadt. unless you’re particularly perceptive or have known him for long enough to tell, you might never find out venti likes you until he decides to tell you himself, or you gather up your own courage to confess.
here’s a little tip: venti hardly ever talks about himself. you’ll notice when he talks, the spotlight is always on someone else, rather than on him. the storyteller but never the hero of the tale. venti sharing more personal stories with you is a sign of trust, a sign that he wants to connect with you on a deeper level than that of simple friends. being so vulnerable is discomforting to him, but because you are now important to him, he’s willing to be in such a position to show you how genuine his intentions are. it’s something he’s done with the traveler too, in his story quest, and we’ve seen time and time again how much he trusts them and values their friendship—what more with someone he’s already begun to think of as his potential lover?
if you take the time to pause and look a bit closer, you’ll know you’ve caught this whimsical bard’s fancy by how often he seems to be around you. mostly just to offer his company and his tunes, but he’s just as eager to lend a hand should you ask for it. in fact, you'll find that he'll appear right next to you just as you need him most, like some sort of sixth sense, manifesting from thin air. you might also find yourself on the receiving end of a fair amount of flowers and various trinkets, but nothing fancy.
venti wants to be someone you can rely on. he enjoys showing you he cares more than saying it, which rings true even after you've become a couple. it’s because he doesn’t say that he likes you, but rather shows it through his actions, proves how genuine and sincere he is about you—in whatever way you’ll have him.
he’s offered you his heart without ever saying it, there for you to take whenever you’re ready.
s - staring, do they stare at you? how often? how do they react when caught? what do they do if they catch you staring?
venti definitely stares at you. or, perhaps, watch is a better word. he’s fond of watching you while you do your thing—you could even say it’s become something of a favorite pastime of his.
he loves being around you while you work, gazing at you fondly as he munches on an apple. you flutter about the area, tending to whatever it is that needs done, scribbling away on papers and mumbling under your breath. he cheers with you when you finish. wiping away the sweat on your face with a quick kiss as a reward, he immediately pushes you out the door to destress at the tavern.
tonight, venti decides to play your favorite tunes, words tumbling from his lips and fingers dancing well-practiced steps. once more, another soft look settles on his face as he peers over at your table, where your laugh resonates even above the boisterous roars of the other regulars.
it doesn’t take long for the crowd to notice his unrelenting gaze. your friends lead in teasing and whistling, causing the rest to follow. a quick glance to his direction and you look away as he winks, his giggles perhaps the sweetest tune he’s sung for you tonight.
venti never tires of it. he enjoys seeing you experience life as it is. his beautiful and charming windblume… the adorable expression on your face whenever he does this tickles his heart every time, so can you really blame him if he wants to see it over and over and over again?
°•. ✿ .•°

Nobody asked but I have thoughts and want to babble so y'all are my dubiously willing rubber duckies.
Thoughts on various Hazbin Hotel characters under the read more
Charlie - She's very cute, naive, and uber optimistic. Genuinely I'd call her a sweet little cinnamon roll. Though, that being said, so far she's felt like a pretty one dimensional character in the four episodes we've seen her. I really do hope she gets a little more characterization as the show goes on and that she doesn't end up with the same issue Millie from the sister Helluva Boss show has.
Vaggie - I really like her new design tbh! Characterization wise though I really wish we knew? Literally anything about her? The most we get is a hint that okay she died in 2014, she's Charlies gf, and has been involved in war / battles thanks to the classic group bonding episode. The only real interesting thing she might have going for her is? That she could POTENTIALLY be some fallen angel / ex exterminator, as per old hazbin headcanons claim, or that she might be one of Carmilla's daughters. Again I'm hoping she ends up getting more characterization soon and doesn't end up another Millie. Also why the hell does Husk and Angel Dust have more chemistry after episode 4 than Vaggie and her already established gf do? I'm??
Angel Dust - An interesting character for sure, and I'm very curious to see how his story plays out. Could do without him making everything sexual 24/7 but given the situation the character is in and how he tries to cope with it, it's whatever.
Alastor - Idk I actually don't really have a whole lot to say about him? Sure he's interesting, I want to know his motivations as to why an overlord like him is helping Charlie and why both he and Lilith were gone for 7 years but??? Idk I'm sort of indifferent to him at the current moment? He's kind of just the one note silly wacky chaos character with mysterious motives. I do really like his voice though!
Nifty - I thought I'd like her more than I do but? Honestly I don't really care for her at the moment. She's the typical yandere character but, again like most of the female characters in the Hellaverse, is kinda one note and ultimately forgettable. Nor do we know anything about her (yet).
Husk - Gonna be honest, this grumpy kitty had my heart from the pilot. He's def one of my favorite characters in the show, and personally I think his backstory of being, for lack of better terms, a fallen overlord is really interesting. For having been a gambling con man magician in his human life, I do have to wonder why he was chosen to be a cat rather than a rabbit? or perhaps a snake? Though I suppose the magician aspect of what originally went into his character had since been dropped, since they seem to have leaned more into him being just a gambler. His budding relationship with Angel Dust, whether be it as friends or eventual lovers, is very cute and very genuine tbh. Still questioning why they have more chemistry than Vaggie and Charlie but here we are. I also really adore his singing voice ough it's very smooth and very pleasant to listen to.
Velvette - oh lord I do NOT like this character, but then again, I don't really like any character that has the typical Bitchy Influencer tm type personality... Or any of those irl influencer type folks in general. Though I do want to know why? she was made english? I mean I understand a good portion of it is probably so that the three V's are unique in some way with Vox being the american one and Valentino the latino. Making her english certainly gives her that distinction from the other two, I suppose I'm just surprised they didn't go with the California valley girl type accent for her.
Valentino - vile, sleezy, disgusting, I love him. He's absolutely everything a villain like him should be. I'm personally super glad that his big red coat isn't? actually JUST a coat tbh? I think it's a super neat idea that it's actually his wings folded over his body and held together with either some sort of clamps (like the decorative enamel pins you'd find connecting both sides of the lapel on a leather jacket) or some kind of piercing.
Vox - oh no why is he my type.

the outing of dr jekyll
Tumblr media
I do not believe the strange case of dr jekyll & mr hyde to be a mystery book or, actually, i don’t believe the mystery itself to be the relevant part of the book: there are plenty of themes one could analyse when talking about this book, that are much more interesting than the mystery itself. One of the main topics of the book can be summarised in the following question: how far can we take scientific progress and at what point along the way do we leave morality behind? We could therefore talk about Jekyll’s character, about how he was a clever man, profoundly aware of the psychology of the human being, but not in the same way every person does: he was not a human being experiencing humanity in maybe a slightly more aware manner, he was a scientist who had a subject of study he gradually became obsessed with.
This is a valid interpretation, but not the only one. The one i prefer is actually opposite to this, it sees jekyll as extremely human, fragile and maybe even irrational: i am talking about the queer interpretation of the book. I’d like to start by pointing out how strictly man-centred the whole work is: we are in the Victorian age, meaning that women never really had that much space in literature, but they were usually at least mentioned as love interests. Here, instead, they are barely even servants. There might be a total of three women mentioned in the whole book, and none of them even has a name. The only one that has some kind of role is a maid who has the sole purpose of witnessing the murder Hyde commits, something that I actually believe to be relevant to prove my point. When describing what happened she says that the victim, sir danvers carew, approached Hyde with a “very pretty manner of politeness”, he seemed to be asking for directions without actually caring about them, as if it was only an excuse. What seems to have happened is that an older man approached a younger one to get something from him, but the latter rejected him and, being mr hyde, beat him to death. On the other hand, though, the encounter might not have been that casual, since utterson will later reveal to the reader that he had introduced carew to jekyll a long time ago. Might it have been that Jekyll had pursued a romantic interest he had in carew through hyde, only for it to terribly degenerate?
The point I am trying to make is that, maybe, what jekyll wanted to bottle up in hyde was not just anger, but mostly fear, fear of his desires and sexual preferences. Hyde is indeed described as “ashamed of his urges” and “filled with nothing but hatred and fear”.
Apart from this encounter, that can still totally be up to interpretation, something that, in my opinion, hints at jekyll’s homosexuality are two sentences a friend of utterson’s said in the very first chapter, when talking about hyde: “blackmail, i suppose; an honest man paying through the nose for some of the capers of his youth, Black Mail House is what i call the place with the door, in consequence”, and “the more it looks like queer street, the less i ask”. In both quotes, the historical context certain words are said in is the key to their understanding, but let's unpack them separately.
The first quote is said while wondering what can connect such a respectable man with such a despicable one. Our 21st century brain would make us think that hyde could simply have some non-specified dirt on jekyll and is using it against him, but let me take you to the late 19th century, to 1885 to be specific, just some months before the book was written, when the Labouchere Amendment was passed, also known as the Blackmailer’s charter, which “made all homosexual acts of ‘gross indecency' illegal”. Mentioning blackmailing at that time was immediately connected to this law, as it was very easy to accuse a man of this crime, and even without getting him actually prosecuted or condemned to hard labour, you could still easily destroy that worshipped reputation the victorians were absolutely terrified of ruining. The fact that blackmailing is the first thing they think about, might actually say a lot about Jekyll, his friends might have already been suspicious, something that I think is also hinted at in some dialogues between jekyll and utterson in which they carefully avoid giving an actual name to what is left as a phantom menace that utterson believes to be the reason behind his friend’s weird attachment to that man.
(https://www.parliament.uk/about/living-heritage/transformingsociety/private-lives/relationships/collections1/sexual-offences-act-1967/1885-labouchere-amendment/ )
Moving on to the second quote, the key world is queer. The term queer comes from the german term twerh, “oblique”. It was borrowed from Scottish first and from English then, with the meaning of "strange, peculiar, odd, eccentric". In the late 19th and especially 20th century it started to be used as a derogatory term to refer to gay men, while, talking about contexts, nowadays it lost its negative connotation, and simply indicates anyone who does not identify as heterosexual and/or cisgender. To further analyse this quote, I found an “etymonline” page to be very useful, since it specifically talks about a “Queer Street” as “the imaginary place where persons in difficulties and shady characters lived”. It had a general meaning of off the tracks, contrary to what one could expect and desire, far away from a respectable life.
( https://www.etymonline.com/word/queer )
The term queer appears multiple other times, one of jekyll’s servants says that “there was something queer about that gentleman”, and in the original manuscript he even said that the mirror in jekyll’s bedroom “has seen some queer doings”. Why would Stevenson change “queer doings” to “strange things”, if by queer he only meant “odd”? I personally do not believe that he intended the two words as synonymous, also considering that the first draft also talked about jekyll as a “slave of certain appetites” already “from an early age”.
In my personal opinion, what the strange case of dr jekyll and mr hyde silently talks about, is the shame and desperation that came (and still comes) with queerness, the inability of recognizing it as an element of your identity, and therefore trying it all to get rid of it, the illusion of being able to just rip it out of yourself, in order to live a normal and acceptable life. It is about human beings being irrevocably delusional while thinking that having to live a double life can smoothly fade into splitting the rotten side of your being from yourself and leaving it to its devilish tendencies, and the disenchantment of doing so only to find out you are left with emptiness, that that despair did not come from your corrupted nature, but from your attempt of corrupting it. To use jekyll’s words, “If each, I told myself, could be housed in separable identities, life would be relieved of all that was unbearable”. But how can we expect to bear anything at all, where do we expect to find the strength we need in ordered to do so, if we have already shattered and weakened our soul by ripping out what we do not like about it?
Jekyll’s pain and dissatisfaction is what leads him to create Hyde in the first place, but this decision ends up creating him even more troubles and suffering. He even gets sick during the story, apparently due to the potion he takes to switch from one persona to the other, but you can kind of guess that there is more to it, that it all starts from a lack of psychological well being, from the fact that jekyll has yes, certainly corrupted the human nature and altered untouchable laws, but above all, he has betrayed himself, he attempted to repress his nature, to reshape his identity. He eventually understood that he could not live his life as a half, and decided that this meant that he could not live that life at all, giving up everything in order to suffocate the violence that exploded from his other rejected and mistreated half. In my opinion, the strange case of dr jekyll and mr hyde was a heartbreaking story of pain and fault, despair and sin, fear and disguise. It is the story of a man who, in his words, is “the chief of sinners” and therefore “the chief of sufferers also”.

Princess Quest
Tumblr media
I will be honest. I'm not really fan of Princess Quest becoming part of the lore of Help Wanted and Security Breach. It raises too many questions how it works in-universe. Like,
1: Why does beating the game free Vanessa of her brainwashing?
2: Why is her brainwashing linked to this game?
3: And how did Glitchtrap do it exactly?
In GGY we learn Gregory's also under Glitchtrap's control, and he used the same method on him like with Vanessa. Throughout the story Tony tries to find GGY and ask him how he is able to get such high scores. With the knowledge we get by playing Security Breach. We know by beating Princess Quest frees Vanessa. So, we're able to piece together that Gregory is able to wiggle himself just a little out of his brainwashing and try to find and beat the game that has him under Glitchtrap's control.
Now that's actually something not unique to Gregory. In one of the e-mails of Special Delivery. We get hints of Vanessa also wiggling free of her brainwashing and trying to ask for help.
Hey, Ness,
Just a quick FYI - I know I mentioned trigger words, but the AI is actually a little more sophisticated than that, and of course there are people like me watching the system, too.
So, the word compliance by itself isn't going to set off any red flags, but the sentence how to induce compliance in human subjects, and how to induce self-compliance(?) did actually get my attention. (I think the answer might involve chocolate chip cookies? Always works on me.)
I also thought it was strange that these were immediately followed by searches that couldn't possibly have any relevant answers for you. Did you search for 'help' by itself?
Anyway, my offer still stands if you want to go over the company policy. I'm free any day after work - we could grab dinner or coffee if you want. In meantime you might want to do some of your more... interesting research at home.
-Luis
Now I'm very likely going to sound like an idiot for saying this. But I actually don't understand the whole "compliance" thing. As it's never brought back up after this e-mail. I have two theories.
1: It's Glitchtrap trying to find better methods to keep Vanessa brainwashed and he is using her login information to find it. So, Luis thinks it's her.
2: It's Vanessa trying to learn how to brainwash someone else so she can have her own follower.
The former is the most likely, but the latter can also be as well. If it is the latter. That would've made the mystery of who's under the white rabbit costume more of a mystery and have people guessing. It could also better justify why Vanessa can be out of costume and do her security guard job. While "Vanny" is doing something else at the same time. It could've been a Ghostface situation like in the Scream franchise (save for Scream 3).
And that could've been the twist and we would have felt sympathy for the woman who was either kidnapped or lured by Vanessa and then brainwashed to be her assistant in her plans to bring Glitchtrap back into the physical world.
But we know that's not the case. Vanessa and Vanny are the same person (NOT split personality). And because of that it makes it obvious as the two can't be in the same room together at the same time.
The self-compliance thing is obvious. Vanessa was looking for ways to make sure she would stay in control of her own actions. Possibly with trigger words or images of things she likes. However, this does be the question how much Vanessa is aware of her actions.
I don't like the idea of her blacking out and everything she does for Glitchtrap is done in a trance. It absolves her of her crimes.
But regardless this ends up going nowhere as I said above. As Steel Wool seemed to ignore a lot of these e-mails and chose to only acknowledge a select few. Even then there are some changes to them from what we get from Vanessa's therapy sessions we can listen to in SB.
Now this does back to Princess Quest despite it seemed like I went off course. Princess Quest was a bonus mini-game to the in/out of universe mobile port version of Help Wanted. Games only get ports to other consoles, PCs, or mobile devices when the original version is released first to the platform it was intended to be released for. So, Princess Quest came later in the timeline and Special Delivery makes no mention of it. Not even in the scrapped e-mails.
This shows that Steel Wool was in charge what happened in the story more so than Illumix. Illumix could add and expand it, but Steel Wool had the final say what was canon or not. So, I wouldn't use MOST of the e-mails in SD for any stories you want write that takes place during or slightly after Help Wanted.
But that does go back to the how's and why's of Princess Quest being the game that's binding Vanessa to Glitchtrap. It leaves this gap of time for Vanessa before the mobile version of Help Wanted in these unnecessary levels of vagueness.
It also doesn't make sense that you need to beat three Princess Quests to free Vanessa. We never learn what was Gregory's arcade game and we never learn if there was more than one. Plus, it's unknown if his method to be free was by getting almost impossible high scores or beating the game. As GGY implies his arcade game can be played by anyone in the Fazcade.
I liked it better of Princess Quest being a metaphor for Vanessa's story of being brainwashed into being Glitchtrap's follower.

Why I hope ACOTAR 5 focuses on Elain and Azriel and not Elain/Lucien or Azriel/Gwyn.
(MAJOR SPOILERS FOR ALL PUBLISHED ACOTAR BOOKS)
I accidentally found myself randomly falling into an acotar theory hole. I’m on break and my brain got stuck on this mystery so this is the result whoop whoop.
I’m just enjoying theorizing about the future of the series I like, not trying to upset anyone. I think all four of these characters are cool and could see interesting love stories for any of the couples. I definitely see how SJM could be hinting at the book going somewhere different as well, however from purely a story standpoint, I think Az/Elain are set up to be way more interesting.
Why I think Az/Gwyn wouldn’t be that interesting:
Azriel = Just like pretty much all the other characters mans def needs some healing journey stuff more similar to Rhys than Cassian. No matter what, the things with Mor and his past and anger with Illyria will be addressed. If he ends up with Gwen, he will also need to address not being with Mor or Elain and the role Rhys played in that. So significant healing vibes. On top of falling in love with Gwyn and moving the series plot forward so a lot to cover.
Gwyn= There would probably be some addressing of Azriel first being into Mor and then Elain on her side as well. Gwyn’s past ordeals and recovery were heavily referenced in acosaf so if she was a main love interest in the next book I imagine even greater emphasis on her healing journey, particularly in relation to embarking on a physical relationship with Az.
Gwyn’s healing journey would likely be her continuing to gain confidence and belief in her own strength through her work with the Valkerie, friendship, music and song, and a love interest. Now not saying that in itself isn’t interesting, but, as much as I LOVED acosaf, we have already gotten 700+ pages of pretty much this exact same plot. Right down to the same characters and passion projects. There is a significant amount of people putting off reading acosaf because they aren’t interested enough in Nesta to read a whole book about her healing and not a lot of series plot. I think Gwyn is a cool character but I don’t know how appealing it would be to have a whole 350+ pages about her going through such a similar journey to Nesta, in addition to Azriel going through something like that as well.
Series Plot: Gwyn and the Valkeries are very cool and interesting but still training and its said in acosaf that it might be close to 100 years before they were ready to fight in a legion during war. We don’t have any knowledge of Gwyn possessing any additional powers other than being Valkerie. I think it might be a little much to introduce those powers and have them become a major plot point all in one book. Now they are strong fighters and won the rite, but I don’t see how that can directly impact other aspects of the plot other than Gwyn’s role in research. Which again is so similar to acosaf. So as of right now, I don’t see how Gwyn’s role clearly lends to driving the actual series plot forward and it seems plausible that her book might end up very similar to Nesta’s in which growth was the plot more than the series plot. Which again interesting, but we just had an entire (great) book like that.
So in terms of series plot, not sure where it would go. In terms of romance, it would likely be Azriel realizing that no one else was right for him but Gwyn is and them falling in love.
Why I think Elain/Lucien wouldn’t be that interesting:
Elain: I’m really not sure how this would go for her, but there would be emphasis on her realizing that Lucien was the right one for her all along. In addition to personal growth, maybe some things about becoming her own person and finding out where she fits in this new world which if she goes with Lucien, likely wouldn’t be in the Night Court.
Lucien: He also would have to find where he belongs in this world which makes sense for them to do together. He would have to address his relationship with Tamlin and figure out what’s going on with his father and possibly end up taking some form of leadership or even becoming a High Lord. I think its possible his previous heartbreak and struggle to get Elain interested in him would be addressed as well.
Series Plot: I could see how this one could have more to drive the plot forward. I think Elain and her seer abilities are going to play a huge role no matter what. I think Lucien and his connections to Tamlin, Jurien/Vassa, and the Day Court could also easily become a significant plot point.
Romance: One thing I don’t like is how a possible theme is Lucien finally convincing Elain to give him a chance after multiple books of rejection. It gives a bit ‘nice guy finally wore the girl down vibes’. Now I’m sure SJM would write it in a way where that’s not a problem and maybe go for more of forced proximity kind of thing but still not my favorite idea. I also don’t like the role Lucien played in her capture and the fact that despite her being his mate Lucien kind of sat around while a dying Azriel still tried to help her. Other than that, it would be about Elain and Lucien falling in love and realizing they were right for each other all along.
Now nothing wrong with that but it would be remarkably similar to the plot of Azriel/Gwyn falling in love. Which as stated above, that story is already possibly quite similar to acosaf so there is a big potential for some serious repetition. Also, I kind of feel like Elain ending up with Lucien would lend to her staying more one-dimensional but who knows.
Why I think Azriel/Elain would be interesting:
Azriel: Same healing journey in regards to Illyria and Mor mentioned above. Additional conflict in terms of deciding whether or not to go against orders and the fact that his brother gave those orders. Potential conflict of going against Lucien (who may or may not have been revealed as potential High Lord) and the politics of the Night and Autumn Court. Plus developing relationship with Elain.
Elain: I definitely think her story would be super interesting if she ends up staying in the Night Court. Many of the characters hint that Elain doesn’t belong in Night and as a softer person she would fit well in some place more like spring. However, Elain starts to show signs of there being way more to her than that. I think this book could have her coming into her own and showing everyone that things she did (telling off Grayson because no-one owns her, stabbing Hyburn with truth teller because he threatened her sister, claiming her capture by Hyburn as her own story…) are not just flukes and the type of person she is. I think her story would be about choice. I can see her being super angry about Rhys and the others stopping her from being with Az because they feel that at least some part of her should give Lucien a chance even though she has expressed no desire in three years. I can see her choosing who she loves instead of just following a mating bond, choosing to bake/garden and be powerful at the same time showing she does belong in the Night Court.
Series Plot: Az and Elain have both been main characters throughout the series. I can see how Az being a spy and Elain being a seer could come together really well to drive the plot forward.
Romance: Forbidden love plot with both choosing their destiny instead of what others think they should do. I think before that there would be some tension because Az initially obeys Rhys so Elain might spend time hitting him over the head and reminding him that she wants him. Elain recognizing that Az is pretty dark but loving him and allowing them both to have a mix between dark and light. Azriel having someone choose him even above something as sacred as a mating bond. They have had very intense scenes like Azriel giving her truth teller, saving her from Hyburn, being the only one who doesn’t treat her like she is weak and guessing she is a seer. If they both end up with other people, those really lose their significance which I just think isn’t as cool as if they remain importance scenes.
The significance of Azriel’s story would be recognizing he deserves the love of someone as ‘good’ as Elain and being chosen over everything else. The significance of Elain’s story would be her controlling her own life plus realizing/showing she can be both; a kind person who loves her hobbies and someone strong and powerful who belongs in Night. I personally feel as though these outcomes are more interesting in terms of character development than the alternatives if they end up with other people.
Lowkey think Elain or Az + someone totally different would be interesting as well.
Either way, I’m sure SJM will make it good and no hate to anyone who wants something different, these are just theories. I’d love to hear opinions and or other ideas on where the stories might go.

[Review] Grapple Force Rena (PC)
Tumblr media
More grappling action!
Grapplethon 2023 continues with this little treasure of a game. Rena was Kickstarted in 2014 with a quite experimental model: a serialised episodic game playable in a browser (“a webcomic you can play”). These plans fell through but its creator Tim Ashley Jenkins pushed on and with the help of Galaxy Trail (Freedom Planet) published it in 2018 as a traditional standalone game, which works perfectly well for it.
GFR seems inspired by 16-bit action games like Treasure’s, as well as obviously grapple-action classics like Bionic Commando and Faussete Amour. It benefits greatly from being a modern release though, sporting vibrant colours, options for analogue control that add much to the grappling gameplay, and a diverse cast in both skin tone and respectful gender identity (for example, several characters are non-binary).
Rena has few verbs in practice: her grapple powers are a laser focus here. This lets the game hone and iterate those mechanics, and allows even more options for control schemes. I tried D-pad and buttons at first (I just can’t get on with analogue movement in a 2D sidescroller) but analogue aiming is so essential for getting the most out of the grapple that I switched to mouse and keyboard. Not only does the grapple let you swing and climb, but combat is frequent and your only recourse is grabbing and chucking, as in Treasure’s Mischief Makers. Lucky it’s so satisfying to do, and not much of the game overstays its welcome outside some platforming difficulty spikes at the very end.
The story is mostly pretty breezy, with a cartoony tone in a fantasy world, mysterious artefacts, likeable friends and rivals, and a moustache-twirling antagonist... until an odd swerve at around the three-quarter mark where reality breaks down, the government turns fascist, and everything goes a bit Iconoclasts-lite. This does encourage cooperation with former enemies (always a fun trope), but some plot threads get hastily dropped and the ending actually ends up rather anticlimactic. I have to wonder if the planned episodic release might have smoothed this over more or given more time to address the disappearing antagonist and their plot, the hinted moral ambiguity, or the enemy lieutenant who shows up in one cutscene and is never seen again. Oh well, I’m glad the attempt was made to shake things up and make the story more interesting even if it didn’t all pan out.
There’s occasional cracks in other parts too. Some level gimmicks work better than others. And maybe it’s all the other grapple-based games I’ve played recently but Rena’s feels a bit weak and finicky. There is depth to the game in mastering these mechanics and learning the levels, with optional time trials unlocked after finishing, so I understand that it’s not just a joyride down easy street. And honestly, for a first-time commercial game developed almost entirely by one person which changed business model and release format partway through development, it’s a remarkable achievement, so I can forgive a few rough spots.

Three Body (2023)
Watched: 14.02.2023
Right or wrong is only a matter of perspective.
I love a show that makes me engaged. That makes me think and question presented topics. That makes me want to think how I would react if I was presented with the same ideas, what would be my questions and doubts, and who would I side with. That makes me analyze the statements of the characters trying to figure out what flaws they might have, and in what aspects they are correct. Three-Body is all that.
I saw quite a number of people say that you need to be patient with this show to enjoy it. I would honestly disagree. Being patient means you need to tolerate something negative, and I see no such a thing in the show. Slow pace? For me it added to the charm of it. The even pacing, how each time they dropped a new hint, they added a few more questions, the mystery of it all, the lack of answers - for me, these are exactly the things I loved about it. So if someone finds these annoying, I don’t think any level of patience will make them like Three-Body in the end.
My favorite aspect of the drama was how it exposed the limits of human’s perception and cognition. How limited we are by our beliefs, hopes, motives, experiences and even biological aspects. We are painfully biased towards our own species. But it also shows how normal that is and that it can be, at least to some extent, overcome.
Not to mention the diversity of the characters in terms of their personalities, motivations, moralities. It’s truly an art how they slowly showed all the layers of the characters, their perspectives and plans. It was a perfectly crafted journey. They knew exactly when to disclose different information to keep the interest of the viewers.
How hard is it to understand the show? I’m not gonna lie, it’s not an easy watch, but that comes from someone who knows exactly nothing about physics. I had to rewatch a few scenes to understand the theories, some google searches also helped. All that is not needed to get the big picture, but it adds to the viewing experience.
Were there any things that bothered me or could potentially bother others? Yes. Since the drama invites you to analyze everything and pay attention to all the details, it’s also easier to pick up some inconsistencies. That said, a lot of them can be excused by the unreliable narrator at any given moment and their own goals in sharing some, but not all information, and at times even distorting it.
What’s more - we don’t get clear cut answers for a lot of questions asked. Some of it might be the result of the drama being based on just the first book in the trilogy, but some seem to be left vague with no hope for solid answers even in next installments. I can clearly see how this could piss off many people, me being weird, I actually enjoyed it. The fact that I had to form my own theories on why some things happened based on the hints and bits of information was an additional entertainment for me.
There were two moments in the drama that made me go: okay, that’s dumb. That said, two scenes in 30 episodes is a ration of dumbness I can easily ignore.
Last criticism I have is the whole existence of Mu Xing - she did not bring anything new or important to the table. She did not offer an interesting perspective nor a unique take on the events happening. She was there as a plot device and I find it a bit disappointing.
For the performances - some were better than others, but all were great. Chen Jin and Wang Zi Wen did an amazing job portraying the same characters in different moments of her life. You can see the changes in her, but she still seems like the same person. I loved Yu He Wei as Shi Qiang and he easily became my favorite character. I loved his bond with Wang Miao, and even though they could not exist in more different worlds, they formed a perfect partnership.
One performance that seemed a bit flat was Li Xiao Ran as Shen Yu Fei - she was supposed to be this driven woman with a mission, but she overall just seemed numb and detached.
The production value was perfection. I truly have zero complaints. I loved the small animation bits explaining the Farmer and Shooter theories, I loved the game graphics, I loved the set designs. I especially loved everything about how the past story was presented. So many aesthetically beautiful moments.
Talking about Three-Body, I need to mention the soundtrack. I was in awe from the first seconds of any of the songs and even just the ambient sounds used for many scenes. It added so much to the storytelling and perfectly built the atmosphere.
Overall, I could not recommend it more if you like complex stories that require full attention and some additional brainpower for theory making, since they don’t really spoon feed you all the answers. How much you can enjoy the show depends on how much you are motivated to figure out the mystery and story behind the characters.
Ps. Can it be viewed as stand alone? Kind of. Depends on how much of a closure you are expecting. Ps 2. I need 2nd season yesterday.

Background/Personality
Yuulan has no idea how the hell she found herself in her current predicament, isekai-ed into Twisted Wonderland, alone with none of the people she once knew and no way to get home. But she is a resourceful person and is always willing to make the best of things, though not without occasional snark. Who could blame her though? Really, she’s doing the best she can but the antics of Grim, Ace and Deuce, along with the occasional overblot, do not make things easier for her.
In this world, Yuulan appears to be utterly magicless, an irony considering her background. Originally from a world on “the other side,” Yuulan was a student of the keyblade, taught various skills to protect herself and those around her, including magic. Though she’s always claimed she was more academically inclined and prefers to use her wits to win a fight rather than brute strength.
Yet, whatever brought her to Twisted Wonderland seems to have stripped her of all previous abilities and she somehow seems to have forgotten that she ever possessed them. Despite her loss of skills, Yuulan still has other valuable abilities at her disposal, namely her love for and way with animals. Yuulan is also pretty talented with needle and thread and enjoys sewing and other handicrafts.
And though the insidious nature of NRC can be challenging for her at times, there are things about her new world that she has grown to enjoy, namely the company of her ghostly roommates. Some might balk at the idea of sharing their lodgings with ghosts but Yuulan finds it amusing, having always had an interest in the supernatural. She also really likes Jack and Taima. The only, to her mind, sensible people in the entire school. But what fascinates her the most in her new life is the mysterious horned young man who occasionally visits her dorm at night, and she longs to know more about him.
Unfortunately,  Yuulan has few memories of her life before coming to Twisted Wonderland, and what little she can remember is less than pleasant, not having many friends and spending most of her time alone with books. She seemed to have a different life philosophy that ran counter to most of the people around her. She often had trouble connecting with others due to her odd interests and no-nonsense attitude—the same things many of her NRC friends find endearing.
~~~
📸Apperance📸
Yuulan has tanned skin, cyan colored eyes and short dark brown that’s longer in the front. Her hair is arranged in two braids in the front, tied with red ribbons. On her left arm is a large scar that’s usually covered by the long sleeve clothing she prefers.
She wears no blazer with her uniform and her vest is actually from an old Octavinelle uniform that has faded to grey. When it’s cold out, she wears a red and purple rauna that she’s knitted herself with a hat to match.
📸Fun Facts/Lore📸
Soon after the events of Book 3, Yuulan became further interested in gargoyles and decided to walk around the school one evening gazing at the many gargoyle statues around campus. She ran into Malleus, and he agreed to point them out to her.
They met a few more times before Book 4 under the pretense of the gargoyle studies club meetings. But they didn’t really talk much about gargoyles and their meetings were usually very random and unplanned. Only occurring when Malleus saw fit (i.e. when he knew he could get away from his dorm mates).
Yuulan feels that if she could attend NRC as a magic-using student, she would like to be sorted into Scarabia. One time she voiced this and it caused a 10-minute argument between Ace and Taima over which of their dorms is best.
At 170CM, Yuulan was actually one of the taller people in her class in her previous life. So it was a tad overwhelming at first when she arrived at NRC, where most everyone else towers over her.
She explains her ability to keep Grim in check as having previous knowledge dealing with badly behaved cats which are common and roam freely where she comes from.
Yuulan is lowkey convinced that Danica was a siren because of her voice and unique magic. Very early in Book 5, Yuulan accidentally walked in on Danica practicing her UM and fell under its influence. But because of her lack of magic, it didn’t fully affect her.
📸Yuulan’s Relationships With My Other Twst OCs📸
Tumblr media
A ~ Unfortunately, Yuulan and Ione don’t get along well due to the latter’s personality being very much like Riddle’s prior to his overblot. Ione also is not fond of Grim, thinking him poorly trained and unfit to be a pupil of NRC. She’s convinced his presence could bring trouble for the school in the future and considering her first encounter was during orientation, where he proceeded to breathe fire and burn her robe, her feelings aren’t completely unfounded.
B ~ On the other hand, Yuulan likes Crisanta very much and of those from Heartslabyul that she knows, is the closest to her after Ace and Deuce. They first interacted during Beanfest and got along well. When Crisanta ended up sacrificing herself to keep Yuulan in the game (compared to Cater who sent Deuce adrift), Yuulan came to really respect her.
C ~ Taima and Yuulan are in the same class and Taima respects her no-nonsense attitude so they get along well too. Taima often helps Yuulan mediate between Ace and Deuce when they’re about to do something stupid, which is a lot. They are both taking turns holding the only brain cell between them. During Book 4, Taima helped Yuulan and Grim escape Scarabia and in return, Yuulan (with the help of the Octanivelle trio) helped Taima escape NRC and return to her home for winter break.
D ~ Yuulan’s relationship with Iman however is the complete opposite. Iman already didn’t think much of Yuulan for her lack of magic but her friendliness with Taima doesn’t help matters. During Book 4, Iman was tasked by Jamil to be Yuulan and Grim’s warden, keeping them locked in their room at night and taking great pleasure in ordering them about during the day.
E ~ In Yuulan’s early days at NRC, Farron (on Crowley’s orders) delivered old uniforms to Ramshackle for her to modify to her tastes. He soon became interested in her and they bonded over their mutual enjoyment of sewing. Soon, Farron was coming to her dorm frequently to help her improve her craft and she now assists him with his projects for the film research club.
F ~ Yuulan has only met Vidaria in passing and has not yet been able to form an opinion on her. Vidaria on the other hand is aware of Malleus’ interest in her and while she’s not jealous per se, she is confused by Yuulan’s closeness and lack of fear of him. Unfortunately, because of their own awkward relationship and what brought it about, Vidaria can’t fathom that anyone could easily get close to Malleus, let alone want to.
🕰️ for ellwood, 🍵 for fiver, 🗺️ for celeste!
[20 OC Questions]
these questions make me write longer answers than usual so I'll throw them under a cut lmao
🕰️ Has there been an event that happened in your OCs past that affects their future or one that they think about still? Is this a bad event or a good one? What are a few of their childhood memories they can recall?
Hm. I really haven't considered Ell's past before they came to the Neath beyond "it might be funny if they're American" but that isn't settled either. Maybe they were a street urchin. That might go some way to explain their general scrappiness and their soft spot for the urchins of London (given they don't seem to give a shit about anyone else). On the more recent time frame there have been... plenty of events that have happened since they've come to the Neath that continue to affect them. The sudden prevalence of black edged cards in my deck being only one evidence of that sjfkdlsng. They've seen and experienced a lot of wild shit that still affects them just in the process of chasing the Marvellous, not to mention unrelated things like the Sugarplum incident.
🍵 Are there any rumours about your OC hanging around? Nasty ones or just good humoured? Got any gossip to share about them?
Ohhhh absolutely. There have to be. He's the Warrior of Light, after all, savior of the planet. I mean, during the Garlemald section of Endwalker, you get a hint of the sort of nasty, propagandist, rumors that have been spread about the WoL in the Empire. I'm sure plenty of those hang around, painting him as a monster or a murderer. Elsewhere, probably also infinite rumors about his relationships with the other Scions or other non-Scion important npcs (gotta be people who think there's something between him and Aymeric). Any gossip who knows about Rava culture probably has speculated why he left. There's gotta be conspiracy theories too, like people who think he must be a primal or maybe he's secretly actually Hydaelyn or Zodiark or etc etc, just given the impossible things he's accomplished.
🗺️ Does your OC like going on adventures? Have they ever discovered something really interesting and significant or are they just too busy getting lost? Where is their favourite place they’ve been? Least favourite?
He loves going on adventures! He's become sort of a freelance adventurer to make extra money (though lately gold occasionally just mysteriously manifests in his house if he's struggling financially. Asmodeus claims to know nothing about it, just one of life's little mysteries, he says). But, yes, Celeste is a very adventurous person. He loves seeing new places and experiencing new things and he has a really broken basically non-existant sense of self-preservation so he doesn't get scared off by things like "threats of death". Generally, he's too busy getting lost (read: he might discover something significant if I ever play him in a game but right now I'm trying not to pile too much crap into his backstory lmao). He has ADHD and also actively enjoys getting lost, so he doesn't put a lot of effort into stopping it from happening. He has a tough time choosing a favorite place he's ever been (read: I can't decide), though continuing with his contradictory personality, probably Baator is high on the list. He's been there at least once, to Malbolge, specifically Glasya's palace and did not see much of the rest of the landscape (which is... interesting), but his enjoyment of it was how new and strange it was. His least favorite would probably be the Elturel - Baldur's Gate area just because the time he spent there was after his family was killed and. you know. Bad Memories.
What is your take on the Dredge being the Entity theory?
The theory is plausible and believable because the Dredge and the Entity actually are similar in many ways as they are both thrive on dark and negative emotions.
However, their personalities are very different. The Entity displays a more cunning and manipulative streak while the Dredge seems to behave close to an animal following its instincts. Although, certain descriptions on the Dredge in the main menu when changing its skin implies that it is smarter than many would believe. One example, the Twisted Plaything skin hints that the Dredge knows that dolls can induce fear into survivors or humans. If it knows what humans fear, it definitely might have a twisted sense of humor more or less. Don’t forget, using the Dredge effectively requires a lot of strategy and planning to catch survivors off guard, so if we merge lore and gameplay, the Dredge might be more intelligent than it lets on.
Still, despite similarities, the Entity displays more powerful feats compared to the Dredge and secondly, I’m not sure what would make the Entity decide to take matters into its own hands because if the Dredge and the Entity were the same person, then the effort in gathering killers from different universes would prove meaningless unless the Entity was desperate.
We need more concrete evidence about the Dredge and his lore, but I have to say, the Dredge is the most interesting killer to learn about because it has an aura of mystery surrounding it.
