hey. jodi. hey. hey. hey. jodi. hey. jodi. jodi do you ever think about how they've been working together for at least half of their whole entire lives. or how rhys said he thought he'd never get any kind of leading role and now he gets to be a romantic hero for an incredibly popular show that involves groundbreaking queer rep and has a dedicated fanbase and he gets to do that alongside one of his best friends and they just go to work and have fun and play pirates. do you ever think about that
hi lyse. hello lyse. uh,,,
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
yeah. i think about that. maybe. a Little.
and you know what else. i maybe sometimes think about how rhys and taika were there for each other throughout the entirety of filming. how they supported each other during the more serious/vulnerable moments, how rhys leaned on taika due to being cast in such a big television role for the first time, how they boosted one another and kept the energy/excitement/passion going. yeah.
and also how rhys thought he was unattractive when he was younger. or at least like, thought he was something of a "doofus"--i forget his exact quote. but regardless, the fact that he's now over here actively posting thirst traps on social media because he has an entire dedicated army of Rhys Girlies (gn) TM to back him and support him and hype him up. and he gets to go to panels and excitedly talk about his work and be goofy and appreciated by an entire new group of fans. yeah.
and basically how like, this show is super super important to all of us, but also super super important to them too. it brightened our lives in so many ways, but it made way for so many beautiful opportunities and growth for taika and rhys as well.
yeah. Yeah.

I've got a question if you're willing, no worries if not! what's klieg's and rouxl's relationship like?
Klieg and Rouxls' relationship is like if two unhinged theater kids with weird interests found each other and immediately decided to team up to fight a bunch of children
At least that's a very bare-bones description of their relationship in my CH3 LOL I feel like I might have mentioned it in a past ask, but the idea is to keep it as an ongoing gag every chapter that Rouxls is on a quest to find "Evil rulers" to serve, as we kind of see where that leads him in CH2 with Queen and TM x)
And I think it's funny if that dynamic is messed with a bit, where he actually does end up finding an "Evil Ruler" equivalent, but rather than an evil ruler, it's an unhinged film director who gets a bit too inspired by his presence and actively does want him around.
Klieg is more of a reoccurring antagonist/miniboss throughout the chapter, and he does an extremely very poor job of hiding his infatuation for Rouxls...
Like literally, they're constantly calling each other "Muse" and "Director", and tormenting the Fun Gang by speaking in broken Shakespearean, It's actually insufferable for everyone involved who isn't them
But I'm not entirely sure if Rouxls reciprocates the infatuation, because I feel that he's lowkey terrified of Klieg x') But not terrified enough to work from the inside to try and take his place as "Supremeth Director".
So the two do end up bickering when Klieg starts picking up on this and how his fancy scripts are getting vandalized Call that the Supremeth Betrayal </3
Tumblr media
But other than that, it is a very strange relationship because Klieg is just so terribly oblivious to how strongly he comes across to others, Rouxls has his own goofy goals, and they have a lot in common that does cause them to still end up bonding a lot in weird ways hehehe
And it's lowkey a bit sad when Rouxls inevitably gets statued aGAIN. I think he knew it would happen, but Klieg had no idea, so he's VERY upset about that :'D
But yeah, they don't exactly "date" each other in the chapter, but there is definitely an implied Something going on there x)

Willow Review 1x01 and 1x02
Continuing my short reviews of fantasy shows, here are some thoughts on the new Willow show on Disney+. I’m realizing that a lot of younger people might not be aware of Willow in the same way as GoT or LoTr, so is was a cult fantasy film that came out in 1988 that is super fun and feels like watching someones LotR inspired DnD campaign. You probably can watch the show without seeing the movie, but considering it is already on Disney+ and you have a week before the next ep, I recommend watching it
Thought
I’m seeing some people complain about the tone or the fact that a decent number of the cast have American accents, and that's fine, but both are constant with the movie. The film had a goofy more modern dialogue, while also being serious when it needed to, and and a good chunk of its cast (in particular Val Kilmer) just used their natural accents. Why do all people in fantasy have to speak like they are British?
The show does a good job as I said capturing the tone of the movie. Its a goofy fun romp, but they're are plenty of quiet moments where it is allowed to be serious
No surprise Warwick Davis is great back as Willow, and glad we are also getting Joanne Whalley returning as Sorsha
As for the new cast, I'm glad to say they are just as fun as the returning characters. At the moment my favs are Boorman, our Rogue, Princess Kit and Jade but I honestly love them all
Ellie Bamber as Dove/Elora Danan is also really good, and ill admit they surprised me on her, I thought Jade was going to turn out to be Elora. Really liking her interactions with Willow and being thrust into being the Chosen One TM
Effects and fight scenes are great, loved the horseback chase and the attack on the castle
Also because I know this will interest Tumblr: we have a queer princess and her knight girlfriend! Very cute
If you are looking for something light and fun after HotD or Rings of Power, this is going to be the show for you check it out

GILBERT IS SO.
HE'S LITERALLY SUCH MANWIFE MATERIAL
MY LOVE FOR GILBERT IS SO UNENDING. HE'S THE SWEETEST BEING TO EVER EXIST. HE MADE ME 100000X MORE GAY THAN I EVER THOUGHT POSSIBLE.
You know what time it is :
Tumblr media
hes so. he's. he's a little goofy but also so charming. He has a cane sword. He is a sentient meadow. He reads philosophy books. He lives in the attic with all the other gays in the village. If he didn't see The Corinthian I genuinely don't know if he would have figured out what the Deal (tm) was with the cereal convention. He wears a pince-nez. He would fight muggers in an alley for a complete stranger. he is the perfect man.
Tumblr media
HE!! IS!! SO!! TALL! Kyo Ra is 5'6, Stephen Fry is 6'5!!
I,,, am 5'5. my brain has collapsed in on itself. Hello Mr. Gilbert you are so husband. What do I have to do to give you a kisskiss.
(also. this has nothing to do with nothing but they're so sweet. sometimes best friends are an orphaned Dream Vortex and a sentient Meadow. Friendship goals.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
if you don't think he's handsome. Idk get well soon I guess MSNDMSND
BUT AAA <3333 he's so enthusiastic about the smallest things. Look at him. Look at that smile!!! I love the constant twinkle in his eyes. There's so much delight packed inside this single man.
He gives the vibes of smb you'd meet randomly at the worst point of your life in a cafe or park, vent to, and receive the most philosophical, vague advice in return. It somehow solves all your problems, and you never see him again MNSDMSNDMN
Tumblr media
Sadness
Regret
Misery
No other thoughts here this is just a very amusing screenshot.
Tumblr media
HIS POSTURE!! HE LEANS A LITTLE!!!! I don't know why I find this so sweet but. like. He knows how tall he is and leans in a little so he doesn't look as tall. So he's more on other peoples level. Gilbert you are perfect.
Also, ring? ring? He's wearing a ring on his wedding finger? I know it's alluded to that the form he's taken is just a copy of smb else who existed at some point, so it could be from that.
BUT ALSO,, the prospect that Gilbert at one point married someone during his time on earth? Presumably smb who has died since there's no mention of it? idk fanfic writers go wild
(or,, that was just a Whoopsie from Stephen Fry forgetting to take his wedding band off before filming MSNDMSN which,, is the most likely. but shoosh let me dream.)
Tumblr media
AND LOOK HOW PRETTY HE IS!!!! The way they adapted his transformation is so gorgeous. I've rewatched the gifs a billion times, and they still make me all soft and gooey inside.
I want to. have a nap here. just a nice little honk shoo honk shoo honk shoo in his embrace. A little stroll. Talk to him even tho he can't respond and ramble about the books I'm reading.
Tumblr media
TLDR. Gilbert. A single hug from him would cure all my illnesses.

Hi, i hope I'm not bothering you, but you seem to be a good person to ask questions about the new DND movie.
I have actually avoided it ever since the director came out and said, prior to its release, something about how it's "fresh and fun to emasculate men" (or something along those lines), as if every single movie and tv show made for the past five years hasn't been doing that. And I have no interest in supporting the girl-power-by-making-men-weak movement. I prefer my women to be strong and competent amongst a group of equally strong and competent men and women, and not only be "strong and competent" in comparison to the weak, idiotic, incompetent, emasculated men around her.
Does this movie actually do that, or was the director just... using the Hollywood Talking Points(tm) he was told to use when promoting it?
I had heard that too and was a little worried. But a friend of mine saw it, and reassured me that the film actually had nothing to do with that; he said he didn't know why the director even said that. So I went and saw it for myself, and I agree with him.
The guys are kind of goofy, but so is everyone. Chris Pine is competent, if a little flippant. The Sorcerer's character arc is about learning how to be competent, so he may seem a little useless at first, but that's because he's supposed to. The Paladin is OP, I'd say he's the most 'traditionally' masculine character, and he's full of gentleness and kindness and is dedicated to his oath.
The himbo character? Is a woman. Beefy and a little dumb, but not an idiot. Smart in a street sense way, so low INT, midling WIS.
The Druid? She's clever and capable, but a touch naive/inexperienced.
Each character has balanced strengths and weaknesses that support and counterbalance each other when they come together as a group. With that in mind, I can confidently say that the director was blowing smoke out of his ass. Why? I don't know. I almost didn't see it when I heard that quote, so they risk eliminating a portion of audience by saying that...
But anways, I'd highly recommend the movie, it's very wonderful and true to the spirit of the game and it stands on its own two feet as a movie too!

thus further confirming my opinion of you as the person with the Most Correct TM Montgomery opinions, I saw your ff.net bio that the superior AoGG tv show is the PBS one and that you have everlasting beef with Kevin Sullivan---SAME. When he nails it, he really nails it (I think all of his stories have more charm than any of the new shows) but also some of the choices he made...sir....I simultaneously want to shake that man's hand and also make him answer for his crimes. On that note, if you could have a faithful adaptation of any of other Anne books like the PBS show, which would you choose? (we don't talk about the continuing story in this household)
Are you me????
KEVIN SULLIVAN is basically a full-on level-nine cuss word in this household. And I’m pretty sure it’s a cuss in Megan Follows’ household too. If Kevin Sullivan has a million haters, I’m one of them. If he has 1,000 haters, I’m still one of them. If he has 1 hater, it’s me. If he has 0 haters, it’s because I’m dead. ‘An iron has entered my heart.’ You surely never asked, but you have to let me tell you... when I say it’s on sight with this man!
Certainly, the first mini-series he did was a film masterpiece! Casting was on point (I used to google ‘Jonathan Crombie wife’ when I was eight, and get this rush of relief when it said he was unmarried and just be all like YES HE’S STILL SINGLE, and be all YEAH BUDDY I know why too, it’s so obviously because he hasn’t met me yet! Haaaa, fast forward to growing up, and catching on to all the musical theatre and then being like oooooh), the scenery was so lush and gorgeous, and there was hardly a single line that strayed from the books. 10/10, chef’s kiss, all the heart eye emojis imaginable.
The Sequel? Like... okay, we’re sliding downward, because we’re missing out on some wonderful, imaginative, sometimes hilarious Montgomery characters. Ginger the Parrot, Mr. Harrison overall, the AVIS, Paul Irving and Miss Lavendar. Charlotta the Fourth. We miss out on Phil Gordon, and Stella, and Pris! And maybe worse, now Gilbert is given actual Theodore Laurence lines. Literally word for word from the original Little Women film (Sullivan didn’t even try to change it), same proposal, and I could almost stomach it if I hadn’t been a book reader, knowing that the real, shining, sweet Gilbert only met with rejection with grace and kindness, instead of a cold “I hope he breaks your heart.” Those suit Laurie just fine, because Little Women readers know that Laurie is a spoilt trust-fund baby with some super not-cute anger issues (issues totally downplayed in every production, to make him more likeable). And the cherry on TOP, man, was this absent-father (tbh, it’s giving weird 19th century sugar daddy), one old enough to be Anne’s own father, being cast as a Roy Gardner replacement. But in the end, we get some beauty, too. I loved seeing John Blythe and Marilla’s interactions, I loved how Rollings Reliable was done, and even the matter of Dolly the jersey-cow, even I loved that Anne went to Gilbert in the height of his illness. So I could forgive much, on account of that! 8 out of 10.
UNTIL two things happened
First, of course, is the Continuing Story. I have never been so affronted by a movie in my liiiiife, lol. Total L. It quite sincerely achieved something that I did not think was possible in that it made me not like Anne. Utter character assassination. (I realize that by this point, LMM’s family was disinterested in working with Sullivan after the mess he made of the Sequel. Which was fair, for them. I get that, and support that for them.) Jack was a goofy, philandering dudebro, and his whole ‘international spy’ arch was so contrived and cheesy. It fell so flat. And the sheer notion that Sullivan sat there and thought, “Yeah, Anne could fall for this guy” is laughable, betraying instantly that he doesn’t understand her as a character. BUT OH WAIT, we can’t forget that Anne, whose kind doctor husband is out there risking his life while saving the lives of others in the middle of a world war... ACTUALLY engages in an emotional affair with this man. She slapped him when he published their book without her name. But what does Jack get, when he says, “Your husband is probably, most likely dead... but on the flip side, now WE can be together”? NOTHING. Anne hugs him. Pfft. PFFFFT. BE SO FASTIDIOUSLY FOR REAL. I get so mad when I think about it, lol. The whole movie just screams “male gaze” to me, because Kevin Sullivan is so incapable of seeing and realizing or transmuting the Montgomery magic. Best part of the whole thing was when Jack was shot. I felt nothing. I give this whole production .5 stars, because we did get a couple cute deleted scenes, lol.
The second thing that happened that took back all my Sullivan forgiveness was watching lengthy and/or recent (within the last five years) Megan Follows interviews. I learned so much! She doesn’t speak to Sullivan anymore, but she mentions the Continuing Story often enough, and that she had to fight Sullivan, because he wanted Anne to kiss Jack. THANK GOD she was successful. Megan’s also noted for saying that the reason the first series was such a success was because Sullivan had ‘help’ and basically nothing to do with the script. (Bonus reason to despise this man, in case we needed more: Megan mentioned that they filmed three separate endings to the first series, because Sullivan wanted Anne to hit Gilbert for giving up the Avonlea school for her. I… I can’t.) When Sullivan was approached about making a sequel, he said he read all the remaining books and thought, keep in mind this is REAL quote, “Gee, no thanks!” He goes further and says that the thought basically they were dull, and that he wanted to do his own version. Could you be more short sighted??? Again, to me, this just proves that this man places no value on quiet, lovely, non-noisy (if that makes sense) stories that are centered in the home, and around women. I think it’s that same interview where we learn also that Kevin based Morgan Harris on his own father, who was something like apparently 25 to 30 years senior to Sullivan’s mother. And that? Was the sound of my last Sullivan-tolerant--nerve breaking into a million pieces, lol. HOW DARE YOUUUU, Sir.
I AM SO SORRY THIS IS LONG. 😭
All this to say, lol, that Kevin Sullivan does not deserve your hand shake! You are too wonderful, and thoughtful, and so insightful, and that man doesn’t get up to your ankle! He deserves no less than a life sentence in literary jail.
BUT BUT BUT, to answer the question… I struggle. I would be happy with any, to be fully honest. But if I got to pick, and they said “you can only have one” I’d be flipping a three-sided coin between Anne of the Island, House of Dreams, and Rilla. 🥺 We could skip Windy Poplars easily (sorry Rebecca Dew, and Katherine-with-a-K), even though if I won the lottery, I’d personally pay for start-to-finish-by-the-book production. HOW ABOUT YOU?

Just sending you All The Questions (tm) from the LGBTQ+ ask game (okay, not all, but a lot). Some of these I know the answers to but just wanted to put it out there anyway. I copy/pasted and it lost the numbers. ;;
Have you ever attended a Pride event or parade? If so, what was your experience like?
What's your favorite LGBTQ+ movie or TV show?
Who's your favorite LGBTQ+ musician or band?
How do you celebrate your queer identity in your everyday life?
What is one thing you wish more people understood about the LGBTQ+ community?
What does the future of the LGBTQ+ movement look like to you?
So many questions! I retrieved the numbers.
3. Have you ever attended a Pride event or parade? If so, what was your experience like?
I have been attending Pride events consistently in some form or other since 2011 (got up to Seattle just in time for it that summer). I've been marching in Pride events pretty consistently since I want to say 2018 but I might be off by a year.
I find being in a parade audience deeply overwhelming, but still a really affirming experience. Marching in a parade, getting to see and hear the difference and connection we are making by showing representation, connecting to all those other people but also being in the bubble of the group I'm marching in, that I love. I also love smaller Pride events, small towns specialized things, the little festivals that spring up around parades.
I've been out to some degree or other, willingly or not, since 1999. The affirmation that my community is here and real that Pride events bring, and being able to access them as an adult is monumental to me. Seeing kids at Pride with their parents or supportive adults is what gives me the most positive hopeful feelings though.
4. What's your favorite LGBTQ+ movie or TV show?
I honestly don't have a good answer for this? I do have a deep love for The Birdcage of older films, but I also rarely rewatch it. But I'm often not a movie and TV shows person. And there's not a ton of right up my alley fairy tale reworkings or the exact right level or hopeful but not too goofy fantasy and scifi that is queer out there for me to be like yes this is for me.
I do love My Beautiful Laundrette, and I think that is going to be my final answer, partially because of my when and how I watched it story.
5. Who's your favorite LGBTQ+ musician or band?
Ooh, hard question! Part of this comes down to are we talking about someone who makes queer art or someone who is themselves openly queer?
Makes Queer Art: Jolin Tsai, OnlyOneOf
Is Also Openly Some Form of Queer: Lady Gaga maybe? I have to dig a little deeper into the stuff I love for this
6. How do you celebrate your queer identity in your everyday life?
I am an openly queer teacher, and my work lanyard has a growing collection of queer pins. All my socks I wear on the regular are queer. I do use clothes and jewelry to show and celebrate my queerness on the regular. I feel like my queerness is something I more live out loud, proudly, and in a way that allows me to find joy more than precisely something I celebrate.
I do celebrate the times where I am able to connect with and mentor younger queer folks and I can see the difference that it has made.
8. What is one thing you wish more people understood about the LGBTQ+ community?
There is such huge variety of people within the queer community and umbrella, and there is no one fit for all of us in terms of needs. The only thing I can state for all of us is that we are deserving of respect as people and to not have to fear the world around us. Queer and LGBTQ+ and so on are umbrellas, and the people under them are facing a lot of the same hatred from society. A world that allows more freedom of expression and love and existence... that will treat us better.
9. What does the future of the LGBTQ+ movement look like to you?
In the future, getting to see more and more younger queer people who do not have to be afraid, who can celebrate themselves and their joy of existence and who they are.

So I'm late to the game here but my vote for the Muppet debate: Eiffel would have to be the one and only human for one specific reason, and that is that he is the only character who specifically, canonicaly and unambiguously fucks. You simply cannot sell me that Eiffel's backstory could ever come from a Muppet. The atrocities, the murderers, the mad science, all things I could see a Muppet doing. Drunken unprotected sex is simply Off Brand TM for the Muppets. Please imagine the entire speech from episode 40 being given by a Muppet. It's fucking hilarious, which is exactly why it could never work. Doug is already too goofy and his serious moments are so deadly serious that they need the proper space to just be awful.
Also, like so many have said, the juxtaposition of the goofiest character on the show being the one human is just too fun. Plus it tracks with the classic Muppet trope of the humans being the most ridiculous and stupid characters in the show/film.
If it weren't for the reasons above I'd say human Minkowski is the obvious choice, but in the absence of that, I think she's Kermit for sure. Bunsen Honeydew is obviously Hilbert. I think that Pryce absolutely HAS TO BE Miss Piggy, therefore Miss Piggy would also voice Hera. The only other casting that I'm certain of is that Jacobi absolutely embodies Gonzo. (Which, actually that's the other reason Doug must be human. The only Muppet who could play him is Gonzo and Gonzo is just too perfect for Jacobi)
Thanks for tuning in, dear listeners!
Wow, thank you for sharing these thoughts- this is a novel line of reasoning that I don’t think anyone else has given!

Okay, so I no longer have the energy to discuss Marvel stuff at length, but I enjoyed Black Widow, to my surprise. I went in with low expectations, but it ended up being solid. Was it a groundbreaking movie? No. But I’d rank it as one of the best MCU films and it felt like a nice change of pace from your standard MCU fare. The film avoided prioritizing action over character arcs and didn't interrupt the story with unnecessary and often distracting humor.  It's become increasingly obvious over recent years just how much the MCU has started to suffer from what made it unique and innovative in the first place—an interconnected cinematic universe. Everything feels like it's a stepping stone to some big event (hah, in that way, it's emulating the comics well), with characters's stories hastily and sloppily pushed aside for The Main Team Event TM.
And that's why Black Widow worked. It didn't have world-ending stakes. It wasn't about one Big Bad (the big bad in this story, much like in CA:TWS, is the system which is why the "main boss" didn't have to be impressive and intimidating on his own). The story felt quiet and contemplative in between the action scenes. It was very intimate and the story benefited tremendously from that. What happened in this movie was something that would mean very little to anyone other than the people directly involved and would go unnoticed.
This isn't something that the whole world will know about and praise her for, and no one treats it as such, both in terms of the characters and the people behind the film. With the exception of a few lines and moments, this film isn't cringeworthy, in-your-face, and ultimately shallow GIRL POWER GIRLBOSS OMG FEMINISM which Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman (and that one stupid as hell scene in IW) both leaned into and imo, were either hindered by or even suffered from. This story is very much one about the patriarchy, misogyny, agency, etc., but it tries to see what the personal ramifications are and how sickening and even banal it all is. It’s about how the world works and treats women, no matter who they are. It’s about how Dreykov, for all his power, is a dime a dozen. The world made it possible for men like Dreykov to exist and do harm. The world goes on without him there, and in the wake of his death and the destruction of the Red Room, his victims still have to deal with all the pain and figure out what they want to do, how they want to do it, and who they want to be afterwards.
Obviously, we also got to see more of Natasha and who she is, what makes her tick, and how her past formed the person she is now. And yes, I dislike Scarjo so I was ready to not care about the movie, but god, I love Natasha and miss her so badly. I ended up unexpectedly crying when the film started and didn't stop until the opening credits ended, not even because something was sad but because that was Natasha! When kid Natasha whipped out her gun and shielded Yelena, I recognized both that skill and heart instantly and it hit me hard. You got that repeatedly throughout the film, and it knits together all the little pieces of Natasha we got throughout the decade. It gives her consistency and strengthens what we already know drives her: her desire to atone and protect and her yearning for a family.
The supporting cast was good too. You could tell they had fun and you could tell they had the acting chops. I get very leery of actors who go over the top in the MCU because almost all the time, it ends up backfiring and undermining their character, but David Harbour had a lot of fun with Alexei and it never bothered me. And I think that's because, behind all of the bombast, there was real emotion behind it that he took seriously and the others did as well. Rachel Weisz...I mean, I don't think I need to say anything more. You expect her to be good and of course she was. And Florence? Yes, this might not be 616 Yelena in many, many ways and I can see how that's upsetting to people (this applies to the Taskmaster as well), but if you see MCU Yelena as her own person, man. Florence overshadows Scarjo which, well, isn't surprising considering her brilliance, but I will say, though, that part of it is because Yelena is a much more energetic character whereas Natasha is more introverted and even a little awkward and shy at times.
I loved the relationships and they all felt real to me. When they said they were a family? I believed them. When you saw them grapple with what they'd done in the past and what they did to each other and to other people? That felt real too.
And the action scenes! Wow, did I miss actually good fight choreography after three horrible shows full of goofy af fight scenes that had bad choreography and were terribly shot (the less we talk about Loki, the better, though TFATWS, which probably should have had the slickest shots had by far the worst cinematography). The fights were engaging and you really sensed the urgency and danger in every fight. I felt like Natasha was in danger, that she would get hurt. The hits HURT and you could tell how painful that walloping was (with the exception of the ridiculous scene where Dreykov punched her repeatedly in the face and there was no sign of impact). Everyone felt very human and very easy to break.
The flow was great and maybe it was slow for some people, but I liked that. I liked that the story took its time to unfold. I liked that you didn't sense any impatience or panic. Everything happened in its own time, but it never dragged for me. There was a great balance between emotional, quiet moments and bursts of action, and neither felt like they undermined the other, a frequent issue I have with MCU works (yet again, one of the best examples and most recent ones is Loki; I hated the fight sequences because they felt so unnecessary and they truly disrupted the flow of things).
Were there things that I wish we got more of or thought could have been tightened up better? Yeah. I wish we got to see more of the Widows, for one thing. I also think it would have been interesting for Natasha to mull over the brainwashing she had versus what Yelena went through; what Yelena went through was much worse and similar to what Bucky went through, but Yelena has the excuse of being a victim with little to no free will whereas Natasha? She was psychologically messed with, but she wasn't being mind controlled. It would've been interesting to see that explored more in depth. I wish we got to see more of the Taskmaster. Etc. etc.
More than anything, though, what left me sad and disappointed after my initial joy and feeling of enjoyment dissipated, was the fact that this came too late. This is a movie that should have come right after CW, and we should have gotten a Black Widow movie right after the Avengers and before TWS or at least after TWS. This is, by far, the most unanimous take and it makes me wonder how everyone at Marvel feels about that, that this is, more than anything, the opinion that's being echoed consistently amongst reviewers and moviegoers alike. And it will never ever ever ever ever fail to piss me off that Markus, McFeely, and the Russos didn't know the Black Widow movie was going to even happen and they ended up offing her. That's a massive decision and I don't know, MAYBE you should have had some more communication! Maybe if that happened, Natasha wouldn't have been fridged (she shouldn't have been in the first place, and one of the things I deeply appreciated about this movie was that it pushed back on the wrongs that male directors and writers have done to her (e.g., Whedon's awful approach to her forced sterilization in AoU, the Russos and M&M saying Clint couldn't die because he had a family as if someone who isn't a parent is less important and less deserving to live and as if Natasha's relationships didn't matter)). Maybe we would have gotten more solo movies with her. We can still get more BW movies, sure, but Natasha herself deserved more.
And that's why, despite thinking this is one of the best movies of the MCU even if the story itself isn't particularly sensational and not being blown away by it (again, I didn't think it was impressive, but I thought it was very solid), despite being pleasantly surprised by the fact that I enjoyed a MCU movie which is rare for me and walking away with barely anything to be disappointed about let alone upset about, despite thinking that this is the story Natasha deserved and being relieved and happy that this is what she got and this is how she's going to go out, I was still left sad for what could have been and what she deserved.

I liked the part with the rats.
James Bond wakes up in a desert with a plastic children’s toy alien blaster strapped to his wrist and a bad case of Protagonist Amnesia. Nobody seems all that concerned by any of this, even when he starts firing lasers and a bunch of aliens show up and wreak havoc.
Generally speaking, I thought the movie was stupid but fun. This was undoubtedly affected by my decision to watch it at 3x speed, as it was already 2:30am when I started it. In fact a couple of scenes managed to overstay their welcome even at this pace. A handful of shots lingered for what felt like a lifetime, despite moving 200% faster than they were intended. You’ve got to REALLY have a pacing problem for it to still be noticeable when I’m so drastically disrespecting your intended runtime. I strongly doubt I would have enjoyed this as much as I did if it wasn’t blazing past me.
Everywhere I looked I saw familiar faces; A strong cast playing weak characters. Clancy Brown was in it, and he will forever be Mr. Krabs to me. The Olivia Wilde love-interest was simultaneously both key to the plot AND totally uninteresting. One particular scene involving her was in fact, the worst in the whole movie by a significant margin.
Visual effects were surprisingly cool, although again I may be overlooking flaws that moved too quickly for me to spot. I liked the alien designs too, especially their ship and the industrial devices they were using.
They must have paid Harrison Ford a lot of money to be in this; He did The Smirk and everything. His character was Racist With A Heart Of Gold and had a surprising amount of the movie devoted to his arc. This arc culminated, of course, with him using a Primitive Spear TM to kill an alien and having an Apache warrior nod approvingly at him, thus ending his racism once and for all. I guess?
Very stupid, quite probably criminally dull to watch in real-time, but kinda goofy-fun.
Side note: I don’t know where in the review to put this, but I could have sworn this movie was called “Cowboys Vs. Aliens”. Well, it should have been; the ampersand is doing them no favours.

TEN  /  inspiration for muse. lately, I’ve been focusing on self-improvement and self-care, mainly trying to add calmness to my everyday life. I’m mindful of what content I’m consuming and limit what doesn’t work. When it comes to youtube for instance, I prefer calmer voices and editing compared to abrupt cuts or sounds. I also appreciate soft-spoken yet kind characters. As for art, my favorite pieces tend to evoke Soft^tm feelings (and lately bi colors, gee I wonder why)
ELEVEN  /  dream job. no single job is “perfect”, so I like to think of it as a well-fitting job. I prefer jobs that suit my personality, values, and one that I genuinely want to do well in vs. doing work to appease the boss. As of now, teaching the youths suits me pretty well, and my upcoming job is at a creative arts school, so I’ll see it how goes O: I think it helps that I can be a little goofy around youngins compared to the Serious Professional Mode.
TWELVE /  meaning behind your url. it’s one of Zhang Chunhua’s weapons in DW8! she was one of the new people I played when revisiting DW in general, and her moveset's cool

Thinking of the whole “every show artist has their own style”, ChalkZone was another show that applies to that as it’s one of the few Nicktoons that was sent to several different overseas animation studios (most Nicktoons have one or two or are done domestically)
Tumblr media
Wang Film Productions tends to be the most on-model, animated the most episodes (they started in S2 and lasted until the end of the show) and has the most fluid animation overall. The way they draw Rudy is closest to how he looks on the model sheet/in merchandise and stock art (at least the ones used for S2-on; S1 had some different designs). I always saw Wang as the best studio that animated the show; their animation was really fluid and slick and stayed the most on-model overall, and some of their most notable episodes were “Pumpkin Love”, “When Santas Collide”, “Double Trouble” (which seems to be widely regarded as one of the best episodes), and the TV movie The Big Blow-Up. I’d say Wang is to ChalkZone as TMS is to Tiny Toon Adventures.
Tumblr media
Sunwoo Entertainment had a different style than Wang and didn’t quite match completely to the model sheets (matched enough, though), but still made the characters recognizable (which is honestly all that matters). They tend to draw Rudy a little chubbier compared to Wang and the other studios. Most of the time they have a tendency to give a rounder look to some characters, and while their animation isn’t QUITE as slick as Wang, they excel when it comes to goofy facial expressions (just watch “Power Play”), which makes them one of my favorite studios for the show. One thing I noticed is that their S2 episodes had thicker outlines than Wang’s (and all of S1), however this stopped by S3. Sunwoo did not animate any S4 episodes.
I’m only including two of the animation studios as they had the most notable differences. S1 overall had a different look to most of the cast, which was overhauled from S2-on. Yeson, which worked on S4, looked similar to Wang but went off-model much more often and had more animation errors. Toonzone Entertainment (which has now gone out of business), which did some episodes of S4 and one music video in S3, had a very inconsistent look with the sloppiest animation, and had a tendency at times to go overboard on the chalk outlines (making them look too blurry). But I always found it interesting how some shows will have completely different looks depending on either who boarded them or what studio was animating it.

DCAU #17: The Cat and the Claw (Part 2)
“Oh, I've been going to the Paris Grand Prix for years... You know, one of these days I think I'll enter it.”
Tumblr media
Curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back. So how much did Part 2 of our first Catwoman story satisfy? Does it get a bowl of cream, or a spritz of water?
Episode: 16 Robin: No Writers: Sean Catherine Derek (story), Laren Bright (story), Jules Dennis (teleplay), Richard Mueller (teleplay) Director: Dick Sebast Animator: Akom Airdate: September 12, 1992 Grade: C
The first part of The Cat and the Claw had me interested, but certainly not blown away. It was a hit-and-miss episode with enough good ideas in it to allow me to enjoy it and wonder where the story was going to lead. I liked that it did give out a sense of substance, but honestly, I don’t think that the substance held steady between the credits of part 1 and the first scene of part 2. Part 2 does continue the story, but sucks out a lot of what made part 1 worth watching, and if I had never even watched part 2, I would not have been missing a damn thing aside from the realization that Catwoman ends up okay and the day is saved. But I think it was safe to assume that anyway, you know what I mean? Part 2 left very little impact on me, positive or negative, and for that reason I’m labeling it a C. Ironically, this is probably the episode with the highest stakes so far, right? With a conclusion that has a pretty epic scale. But it’s just not handled in an epic way. The concept is there, but the execution is lacking. Even if a studio like TMS or Spectrum were the ones to take care of the visuals, it still would have given the same feelings. The team knew what they were doing, giving it to Akom. Yeah, Akom’s work here is pretty bad, and Part 1 is more visually appealing in addition to being simply more entertaining. Even though it didn’t look the best, I could appreciate Sunrise’s unique style. When Sunrise failed, it still made for something that you don’t see everyday. Akom’s work was just plain old underwhelming. This is especially noticeable during the climax with their work on the fire (yeah, fire count, by the way).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That fire looks like something from a Hanna-Barbera cartoon, guys. I’d expect to see similar on Scooby Doo. You don’t get a sense of the danger or the heat coming off that thing, and so you don’t get a sense of worry as Batman tries to get the hell out of there. Another very Akom scene is the car chase that happens when Bruce and Selena are together, out of costume. It looked laughably lame. That scene could have been so exciting and dynamic! But, at the same time, like I said, I understand why Atom was chosen. Even if the animation got me a little bit more invested, it still would have felt empty because of a lack of why I should be invested. It’s like watching a Transformers movie. Just brainless action. And why waste money on sending this episode to a better studio when a much better episode could be? The only real Akom-caused highlight was the train stuff. That looked pretty cool, likely because even though the train was moving, it still provided a static, stable platform for our characters, so it required less technical stuff to animate. All of the other cool stuff to look at was definitely in the storyboards. I liked the bit where the Bat Plane flew across the moon, kinda emulating that iconic moment in the 1989 film. And my favorite visual moment was when Selena’s secretary put on her glasses, and we see it via a POV shot. But then once things are crystal clear, a second later she walks into the shot, seamlessly transitioning it from POV to third person.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
More things like that could have probably almost created a B-level of enjoyment, admittedly. This part is also campier than part 1, with a lot more cheesiness thrown in, and that is to the episode’s detriment. The idea of Red Claw’s group of terrorists stealing a vial of disease from a military-guarded train is a really cool one, and I’ll take that over another standard police chase any day (until those chases start getting more god damn interesting). But something about watching them ride their little vehicle, leap on top of the train like ninjas, walking around on the train effortlessly, and dismantling it was pretty hard to take seriously.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(This thug was in the last episode too, and he’s got this constant, static grimace. Makes me chuckle.)
Tumblr media
Seeing Batman glide in with the bat-glider for the first time was neat, but then again, we get flown into a corn field. This is some of the cheesiest dialogue/line delivery on the show so far, even dwarfing the stuff from I’ve Got Batman In My Basement. No easy task! It’s like the writers here were aware of the serious tone, and trying, but still could only make a guy dressed like a bat so rational. I especially cringed at Batman’s shock that Red Claw was a woman. Having Catwoman be an admirable, strong character is doing feminism in a cartoon right. But this episode was too on-the-nose about it. Another instance is when Catwoman and Batman are tied up. Catwoman says something about their savior being a “woman’s touch”, and then she claws them out. Outside of the show trying to push a feminist message, why, in universe, would she say that exactly? Batman was not being sexist toward her. Red Claw certainly wasn’t. Red Claw is a woman for crying out loud! And how are her claws particularly feminine, anyway? Are they supposed to represent those stereotypical secretary nails? C’moooooon. Lame, lame, lame. I’m a feminist, and I’m all about cartoons showing that women are every bit as capable as men are. But if this is how they do it, then just don’t even try. And to add insult to injury, after we get Catwoman saving both of them, we end with her getting the shit beaten out of by Red Claw in a fight, merely because she does absolutely nothing to defend herself. Catwoman is an athletic cat-burglar who, in the previous episode, managed to give Batman a challenge. And now she’s just letting Red Claw kick her over and over in a way she easily should’ve seen coming. What a…confusing approach.
While the superhero stuff was seriously below par, it’s slightly made up for because of how it explores Bruce and Selena’s relationship a little bit more. I liked seeing them on another attempted date, and so did Char! They’re really charming together, and it was incredibly satisfying to see Selena begin to enjoy his company. But as things start to go right for him, things also start to somehow go more wrong, and he discovers that Selena is Catwoman. To me, it’s believable that he wouldn’t have made that assumption right away. First of all, what are the odds. Second of all, a much different environment, mindset, and appearance. Plus, it’s not as though he was seeing Catwoman every single night, right? Most of his interactions of her was as normal human beings dressed in normal human clothes. Bruce mentions that he hasn’t felt a fondness of a woman like this in a very long time (Mask of the Phantasm entered my head for a second), and it feels so genuine. Somehow over these 16 episode and pilot, with a pretty small amount of spoken words for a main character, we’ve gotten to know Bruce…or…Batman…quite well. We can tell when he’s being phony, we can tell when he’s being sincere. This was sincere. And because his Bruce persona is such an exaggeration of his decency, spotting cracks in that just makes you feel something, man, especially when it shows us that hint of affection. This can be compared to Bruce Wayne talking to Harvey Dent about how proud he was that Harvey was seeking psychological help (Two-Face Part 1). These moments show us that Batman still has this warmth to him. It may be like a candle in the wind, fighting to stay alive, but every now and then there is a spritz of gasoline. For a second, Bruce Wayne and Batman are one. But y’know what? This is all well and good, however it makes me wish that the Red Claw stuff was absent. In part 1, it was different. I wanted to know where it was going. But without decent payoff, there is no reason for the terrorist story element at all. This would have been so much stronger if it were a half hour dedicated to building up the relationship of two troubled adults, fighting for what they believe in, succumbing to a certain level of darkness, all while not being able to find common ground. Paul Dini could have done it. Alan Burnett could have done it. Y’know what, Tom Ruegger probably could have done it. But no. We got writers who felt the need to add in that unnecessary, goofy superhero stuff that was not meant to be the focus of Batman the Animated Series when it didn’t need to be. But if there is one major strength of the superhero stuff, it’s the very ending. Because despite what Batman and Catwoman just went through together, saving countless people, Batman still needed to put her in handcuffs (and not in the way he probably wishes he could).
Tumblr media
(Blurry screenshot, apologies...by the way, are bat-handcuffs really necessary, Batman?)
That was paaaaaainful, but the right kind of painful (again, not in the way Batman probably wishes it was). Having Batman state that he didn't want her taken away like a common criminal was a great addition, and I really want to know which writer came up with that line. Whoever did got what makes Batman and Catwoman so interesting. If only they could have gotten a crack at this episode on their own. As some final words, despite me giving this episode a C, I went back and forth between a C or a D many times. I’m still not entirely sure which is my true grade. It depended on what I was writing about. When I was complaining, I was sure that I should make it a D. But as I was talking about some of the more positive elements, I thought maybe a C was more appropriate. Bottom line, I’m not sure. I think a C is the most fair, though, because aside from just being a middle of the road grade, it could also represent me being completely confused on my opinion. Is that understandable?
Tumblr media
(Here we clearly see that the section of the train that was bombed is still very much intact)
Tumblr media
(Batman was very much on model throughout the episode, particularly in the face)
Fire count: 8 Char’s grade: B
Next time: See No Evil Full episode list here!
