A cask of Amontilado by Edgar Allan Poe (part one)
Trigger warning:This is the first part of Edgar Allan Poe's story "A cask of Amontilado. It contains death in a pretty sad and brutal way.
Tumblr media
THE thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could; but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge. You, who so well know the nature of my soul, will not suppose, however, that I gave utterance to a threat. At length I would be avenged; this was a point definitively settled— but the very definitiveness with which it was resolved, precluded the idea of risk. I must not only punish, but punish with impunity. A wrong is unredressed when retribution overtakes its redresser. It is equally unredressed when the avenger fails to make himself felt as such to him who has done the wrong. It must be understood that neither by word nor deed had I given Fortunato cause to doubt my good will. I continued, as was my wont, to smile in his face, and he did not perceive that my smile now was at the thought of his immolation. He had a weak point—this Fortunato—although in other regards he was a man to be respected and even feared. He prided himself on his connoisseurship in wine. Few Italians have the true virtuoso spirit. For the most part their enthusiasm is adopted to suit the time and opportunity—to practise imposture upon the British and Austrian millionaires. In painting and gemmary, Fortunato, like his countrymen, was a quack—but in the matter of old wines he was sincere. In this respect I did not differ from him materially: I was skillful in the Italian vintages myself, and bought largely whenever I could. It was about dusk, one evening during the supreme madness of the carnival season, that I encountered my friend. He accosted me with excessive warmth, for he had been drinking much. The man wore motley. He had on a tight-fitting parti-striped dress, and his head was surmounted by the conical cap and bells. I was so pleased to see him, that I thought I should never have done wringing his hand. I said to him: “My dear Fortunato, you are luckily met. How remarkably well you are looking to-day! But I have received a pipe of what passes for Amontillado, and I have my doubts.” “How?” said he. “Amontillado? A pipe? Impossible! And in the middle of the carnival!” “I have my doubts,” I replied; “and I was silly enough to pay the full Amontillado price without consulting you in the matter. You were not to be found, and I was fearful of losing a bargain.” “Amontillado!” “I have my doubts.” “Amontillado!” “And I must satisfy them.” “Amontillado!” “As you are engaged, I am on my way to Luchesi. If any one has a critical turn, it is he. He will tell me——” “Luchesi cannot tell Amontillado from Sherry.” “And yet some fools will have it that his taste is a match for your own.” “Come, let us go.” “Whither?” “To your vaults.” “My friend, no; I will not impose upon your good nature. I perceive you have an engagement. Luchesi——” “I have no engagement;—come.” “My friend, no. It is not the engagement, but the severe cold with which I perceive you are afflicted. The vaults are insufferably damp. They are encrusted with nitre.” “Let us go, nevertheless. The cold is merely nothing. Amontillado! You have been imposed upon. And as for Luchesi, he cannot distinguish Sherry from Amontillado.”
Thus speaking, Fortunato possessed himself of my arm. Putting on a mask of black silk, and drawing a roquelaire closely about my person, I suffered him to hurry me to my palazzo.

A friend and I have been talking a lot about the shot story The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allen Poe. We’re both agreed that it’s probably our favourite of his work. I soon got curious enough to see if I could actually get my hands on an actual bottle of Amontillado. And sure enough, I did! Plus with Christmas right around the corner, nows a good time as any to be drinking sherry.  There was a choice between the sherry and some flavoured trifles. I’ll admit I’m not usually keen on trifles (something about the jelly and cake mixture that just never sat well with me) with the acceptation of the Cadburys chocolate ones I used to enjoy as a kid (note to self, get some of those in again.) But methinks if I take a liking to the sherry, then I’d be willing to try the trifles. I told my friend that those Amontillado trifles would be perfect if someone wanted to have an Edger Allen Poe themed party. :3

I’m the basement flat. The Power Cellar is across from me. People barely ever need to go in it.
I could *absolutely* dig a deeper basement from it, and then use that to Cask of Amontilado my friend.

My proudest moment so far at the new office was when people were talking on chat about what measurement someone meant when they (jokingly) said we'd had to share six beer [cans?, bottles?, kegs?] after moving people down to a lower floor. Someone suggested casks and I said if someone tries to lure me downstairs with the promise of 'casks' I'm not going. I know how that story ends. And my manager (who I have yet to actually talk to in person some i started) went 'don't worry we won't brick you up on the wall' It's not often life provides you with a chance to make cask of amontilado jokes and then actually have people get it.

6 STORIES!!!
The Handsomest Drowned Man in The World It is a short story written by Gabriella Garcia Marquez, a Colombian Author in 1968. It is the story of a drowned man who permanently changed the perspective of the townspeople who have seen his dead body in their shore. His seem-like strong body, length, and handsomeness, gave them idea of not being satisfied of what is 'okay', and not to try to much. Without his consciousness, he inspired the townspeople to strive for better and to beautify their coast. This symbolizes, the people who strives for the betterment of theirselves. To not to be comfortable of what they think is 'okay', but not really 'okay'. God Sees the Truth, But Waits This is a story written by Leo N. Tolstoys, which tells us the story of a man whose name is Ivan Dmitrich Aksionov, the protagonist. He is the one who suffered because of other person's action, but did not seek for vengeance nor felt sorry about themselves, like what a typical person would do. Instead, he puts his full trust to God, and let His will be done. While he's in prison, his perspective was changed and the happy-go-lucky character of him has vanished. He always prays to God everything that he's in struggle with, abd puts his full trust with His will. A Father Written by Anton Chekhov a Russian writer and playwright, and considered by others who is one of the best writers of short stories in the literature history. He was also a successful physician who considered the medicine as his wife, and literature as his mistress. His short story, A Father, is a story of and an old father, and his children. He finds himself lucky to have children who are dedicated, and didn't leave him even he doesn't have anything to return the good deeds they've been giving him. This shows the unconditional love of children to their father. Hills Like White Elephants This stroy is written by Ernest Hemingway, there are alot of symbolisms that are used in the story. First symbolism we have is the white elephant, according to history, if someone gave you a white elephant, it is no use for u becuase of its cost of keeping it. For example, if someone gave you a mansion, you wont be able to provide for its costs and taxes. Second is the Elephant in the room, it is an American expression 'Avoiding the elephant in the room' means you're avoing something, subject or topic that is really obvious. The Cask of Amontilado A story writren by Edgar Allan Poe. You might be wondering what is the meaning of the title, if yes. Amontilado is a very specific kind of sherry, a wine. Whike, a cask is a barrel. And, if we ewere to put things together 'The Baarrel of Sherry'. Aside of being a story about the barrel of wine, it is also about a revenge and a secret murder. A Rose for Emily Through a mysterious figure of Emily Grierson, Faulkner conveys the struggles that comes from trying to maintain tradition in the face of widespread, radical change. Also, the death of emily. Emily, a fixture in the community, gives in to death slowly. The narrator compares her to a drowned woman, a bloated and pale figure left too long in the water. In the same description, he refers to her small, spare skeleton—she is practically dead on her feet.

The Cask Of The Amontilado
Tumblr media
“In Pace Requisant” ( Poe 287)  Humor is illustrated through verbal irony in this quote. When the narrator ( Montresor) says “In Pace Requisant” to Fortunado as he walls him up he is being quite sarcastic as well as being ironic. This is evident because of Montresor’s distaste towards Fortunado. Earlier when Montresor said “ The thousand injuries..”
