Game development is super fun and crazy. But I always liked the early stages when teams aren’t quite sure what the direction is. A lot concept art gets lost, but it is fun to try to shoot for the stars because everything could be a possibility! I worked at Zynga and was on the Empires and Allies mobile game. Eventually, lot of these concepts were in the wrong direction but it’s fun for me to find these hanging around in my old folders! You can see I took the initial drawings to map out how I’d build it in 3D and I apparently took a screen shot of the model I made with a starting texture. I think this style was considered because we were trying to compete with Clash of Clans at that time. What’s extra wild for me is the last drawing is a quick sketch of mine when we decided that it should look a lot more realistic! I never got to finish it, but it’s kinda neat to see it all sketchy and kinda in a style I don’t draw in anymore… #zynga #empiresandallies #gamedev #gaming #mobilegames #wip #concept_art #videogames #sketch

Not sure what this day is? Basically, ‘Scrabble’, is a board game in which the objective is to build words in a crossword-puzzle form or the game “Words With Friends”? Players have to use their knowledge and creativity to form words to win points.

If you saw the Google Doodle earlier this month of gaming trailblazer Gerald “Jerry” Lawson, then you’ve gotten a sample of the amazing work of this week’s guest — art director and illustrator Lauren Brown.
Lauren talked to me about the ins and outs of her current role at Wizards of the Coast, which includes doing art direction for the popular Magic the Gathering game series. She also spoke about growing up in New Jersey and attending undergrad there, getting her MFA at Savannah College of Art and Design, and shared how she started her career in animation and gaming from there. Lauren is also a podcaster, so we talked shop a little bit about her show Painted in Color, and she delved into what the podcast has taught her over the years.
