Snippet Sunday
Taking advantage of @dwead-piwate-meggers’ open tag and a post about what would upset the detective the most to have been destroyed in an accident to give my gal Zoe some angst.
“It’s so stupid,” she spat, voice thick and cracking despite her best efforts. “It’s just a thing. I...I shouldn’t…”
Mason knelt beside her and looked at the fretboard she held in her hands, trying and failing to ignore the twisting pain in his chest as Zoe tipped her face up, as if gravity and sheer willpower alone would keep the tears he could see shimmering in her eyes from falling. Aside from some chips that could possibly be filled in, it didn’t look too terribly bad. The headstock and the actual body of the guitar, on the other hand…
Well, he was pretty certain that there was no salvaging what was left. Maybe the hardware like the tuners and the bridge, if she was lucky. Everything else was toast.
“It isn’t stupid if it meant something to you,” he told her, voice surprisingly gentle, even to his own ears. “Tell me about it?”
