“It is now.”

He was a mind-controller determined to win back his ex at any cost. You were a simple shapeshifter in the wrong place at the wrong time. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying a forgery while you plan to get the original work of art, right? And he does take good care of his possessions, if he does say so himself.

Chapter 15 Excerpt:

“There’s a water fountain,” you said, leading the way and hoping he would follow. “Come on, we’ll have you cleaned up in a jiffy.”

“It’s Hermès,” he spat, “do you really think that’ll fix this?”

“I think,” you said, channeling the firm calm of a mother disciplining a child, “it’s better to try than to let some dumb kids and an ice cream cone ruin our day.”

The static between you sputtered. Kilgrave gave you a hard look. You waited patiently beside the fountain, ignoring a drop of melting gelato as it dripped down your fingers.

He took off his jacket and turned on the water.

“They are dumb,” he mumbled as he cleaned, “aren’t they?”

“The dumbest,” you affirmed, your anxiety flowing down the drain.

“I wasn’t that dumb at their age.”

“No?”

“Certainly not.”

“No careening into strangers?”

“Heh! No. No, I didn’t get out enough for that.”

It sounded like a dark joke, but you knew better than to dissect that frog. Kilgrave’s childhood was uncharted territory, one wrong move and you were apt to fall off a cliff.

“Nothing wrong with being more of an indoor kid,” you offered, “I was one of those too.”

“That’s not surprising.” Kilgrave wiped the last of the confection off his lapel, threw away the napkins, and draped his jacket over his arm. “This is as good as it’s going to get.”

Fine, keep your secrets, you thought, I’ll figure them out eventually.
