Transformers and its cop history is so... I don't even have the words, the strangest thing to me is that initially Prowl is the Autobot military strategist. He's not a law enforcer or even has a role of security in the Autobots. His alt mode is a police car
With how many continuities Transformers and new designs for characters have had (most notable is Michael Bay live movies popularising Bumblebee as a sports car and making it more prevalent in Transformers media onwards, compared to his original Volkswagen Beetle alt mode), it surprises me that Prowl has remained with a police car alt mode or has been given roles more reminiscent— if not blatantly stated, to be a law enforcer
Why has this persisted? Especially when in recent years law enforcement has notably been under criticism (to put things lightly). There is no actual reason for why Prowl has to be a police officer or have an alt mode of a police vehicle. It's not really an integral aspect of the character's personality at all and yet that's how everyone characterises Prowl as, "The Cop." Which is through no fault of their own really because he's been a cop/cop vehicle in every appearance he's had from my knowledge. I have always been slightly uncomfortable with Prowl's (unnecessary, imo) connection to law enforcement, enjoying the character and his actual personality becomes difficult because he is so heavily associated with law enforcement/being a police officer
Well, I think it's pretty clear why this has persisted. And I was actually thinking about something similar recently, which is that the version of Barricade who has a police car alt-mode is a really, really strange character because he wasn't created or portrayed as an ACAB statement, but instead he was meant to subvert the idea that cops are safe people who should be respected. Like, we as an audience are expected to share a base assumption that cops are good guys, and it's frankly embarrassing and gross that this approach to the character has been featured as late as IDW2. Analysis of how Prowl has been utilized under the cut:
Of course, Prowl's original alt-mode was a Nissan Fairlady Z painted to be a specialized police pursuit vehicle as used in Japan, so basically a sports coupe repurposed into a cop car for police chases. And he had this design because he was pretty much just a reissue of the Diaclone police car toy. As you mentioned, the character himself wasn't a cop originally—instead, I would say his vehicle mode more metaphorically represented the characterization he had, in which he will stop at nothing to "pursue" his goals and will radio his leader constantly when he doesn't know what to do.
Tumblr media
I also do remember one early comic in which Prowl uses his alt-mode to tell humans to evacuate a dangerous area, and I think there's something to be said for a cop car being a logical choice for a disguise because it can be utilized in ways like that.
Sometimes people say that the Prowl from TFA (who I do really like!) manages to escape problematic implications such as copaganda, but while I do really appreciate that reinvention of the character, he really doesn't. I mean, he still turns into a police vehicle in that series, and the show pushed for him to become friends with a cop who has bigoted beliefs.
What's at the heart of the complete disaster area Prowl became are writers and artists who have base assumptions that inform their work. Writers who are privileged and believe copaganda are just going to do things like this. That's why Prowl became more and more of a cop over time. When those writers and that artist working on IDW2 had a comic sign off on police brutality and showed the proto-Decepticons using an altered version of a real-world anti-racist slogan, that's why, and it's why in the creators' apologies they reveal they never even thought about what they were implying—probably because these issues don't really impact their lives. This is how copaganda even ends up in things like Rescue Bots.
Fandom is guilty here as well. Before Prowl as an angry controlling cop existed in canon media, fans were writing that in their fanfictions, and this portrayal became more and more popular and started to leak into canon over time. And then when it started to appear in canon media, people ate it up and didn't want this characterization to be reverted, and it still persists now. So no, there's no reason Prowl had to be this way, but he has been, it's a pattern, and it has to be addressed in official media at some point. And to be honest, I don't know how it could be... like reverting him to an earlier characterization and having him turn into something else would be nice, but then it's kind of sweeping the history under the rug. Deleting him from existence or having him be a villain wouldn't work because he's literally the Autobots' logo. Maybe it could be tackled by both reverting him to an earlier characterization and having him go through a character arc in which he learns to grow beyond black-and-white thinking or something? He's definitely always had major flaws even before this whole mess, so it could work.
And before somebody comes at me with something like, "Okay but IDW Prowl isn't copaganda and is fine because the story is critical of his actions," I'll say this: okay, but if Nick Roche was going to create a character to explore that, why did he choose to make him a gay, mentally ill, disabled guy? Those are the traits of people who cops murder and oppress. It's like JRo with Chromedome—why would he choose to have one of the first prominent gay characters in his story not only be struggling with addiction, but be struggling with an addiction to violating people and causing them irreparable harm? It's just a different form of problematic.

First Look: The Nissan Z
Nissan revealed the all-new 2023 Z sports car in a global broadcast from Brooklyn’s Duggal Greenhouse, about five miles from where the original 1970 Datsun 240Z made its world debut in October 1969.
"When we introduced the Z in 1969, the Z was a revolution. Since then, for more than 50 years, Nissan has brought style, speed, reliability and so much more to millions of enthusiasts around the world,” said Ashwani Gupta, representative executive officer and chief operating officer, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd.
While the six previous generations of Nissan’s iconic sports car all offered numeric designations, the long-awaited redesign will be known in the United States simply by just one letter – Z.
The 2023 Z offers a sleek, attractive exterior with a silhouette that shows respect for the original model – with a long hood and low rear stance. Inside, the driver-centric cockpit includes a 12.3-inch customizable racing-inspired meter display, available leather-appointed sports seats and 8-speaker Bose® audio system.
All 2023 Nissan Z models are equipped with a 400-horsepower 3.0-liter V6 twin-turbo engine and choice of 6-speed manual transmission with motorsports-inspired EXEDY high-performance clutch, or a new 9-speed automatic transmission with aluminum paddle shifters.
"The Z has always been an accessible sports car – always placed at the intersection of aspiration and attainability – of dreams and reality. This latest iteration is now ready to thrill Z enthusiasts, and create a whole new generation of Z fans as well, when it comes to market here in the U.S. early next year,” said Gupta.
The 2023 Z is offered in Sport and Performance grade levels and a special "Proto Spec” edition, which is limited to 240 units.

“Won’t you take me along for the ride~?”
Tumblr media
y’all ever saw a man so pretty you just cried
welcome to avengers campus, isn’t it nice to be back, KUJO KIRIYA?  it’s been so long since i’ve seen you being a typical TWENTY SEVEN year old CORONER/PATHOLOGIST. feels like forever since i’ve seen you hanging around THE MED BAY.  makes sense too: considering you’re known for being + CUNNING & + LOYAL, even when you can be quite - UNTRUSTWORTHY & - SNEAKY, too.  hey, have you seen the news reports lately …?  i heard you’ve been getting visions from KAMEN RIDER (EX-AID) beginning to return, waking up from dreams of RELAXING AFTER THE FINAL BATTLE WITH MASAMUNE.  must be something in the water …  say, did you always have the BAKUSOU BIKE GASHAT?  i’ve never seen you leave home without it.  —  ( He/him, They/Them & nonbinary man )
(cw for death, general coroner things. Also spoilers for Kamen Rider Ex-aid as a series but not including the movies because by god my attention span is a wreck)
-So to start off this man, Kiriya,  has died once and was brought back from the dead. He will make jokes about it. It also doesn’t help that this man died on christmas and made Kamen Rider twitter a whole ass mess.
-He’s a coroner at Seito University who was friends with Jungo...until the bugster virus hit. Jungo got hit with the bugster virus and Kiriya discovered it through Jungo.
-You know, he thought it would be good for Jungo to know that he had the bugster virus...except that’s a bad idea because Jungo freaked out and got himself into a car accident.
-And that’s when Kiriya learned that the truth hurts and that he’s going to lie so he doesn’t hurt anyone! This certainly won’t backfire on him.
-He blackmailed Kuroto into giving him the surgery and a Game Driver to become Kamen Rider Lazer.
-He met Emu and little by little he figured ‘eh, i can trust Emu. I’ll believe in him’ but he wouldn’t cooperate with the other Doctor Riders until he managed to get like...Level 5. The co-op Gashat. Dragon Knight Hunter Z.
-Oh yeah! HE also figured out that ‘hey Kuruto is Gemn. Time to fuck around and find out. I guess’
-Boy did Kiriya fuck around and find out because! Kuroto killed him via Dangerous Zombie (Depleting Kiriya’s Rider HP and...yeah. He died.)
-And then 24 episodes later, he gets revived except he’s ~evil~ (but he’s not) and he gains Bugster Powers (that aren’t really defined so i’m headcanoning them)
-Betrays Masamune and hey! Back on the good guy’s side.
-----
Earth 200000 ( i mightve missed a zero whoops)
-Hey he’s a pathologist and a coroner here too fellas.
-He works at the Med Bay? Sometimes???? Dude’s in and out of the med bay doing God knows what.
-He’s also in the library doing research about diseases and shit
-Sometimes, he fights. He might want to spar. He’s not actively looking for a fight but if you’re offering he won’t turn it down.
-He still lies to people, just...not as often. Mostly about what he’s researching. He doesn’t like it when people ask him about his research.
-He’s semi-aware that he’s not human but he doesn’t know why or what but he’s figuring it out.
----
So. He’s Kamen Rider Lazer Turbo which means he’s level fucking 0 (hence his catchphrase 0th Gear). While it may be the strongest against Bugsters (there are certainly not any here!), he’s the weakest and will take massive amounts of damage. but hey, he can neturalize the bugster virus. He usually compensates with using higher level gashats, most likely the Jet Combat Proto-Gashat.
Gashats he has access to:
Proto Bakusou Bike
Proto Giri Giri Chambara
Proto Shakakiri Sports
Proto Jet Combat
Proto Drago Hunter Knight Z
Proto Gekitotsu Robots
Proto DoReMiFa Beat
He can also teleport. No limits, apparently.

The Return of Z
Tumblr media
June 2009 marked the debut of the sixth generation Nissan Z-car: The 370Z. Since then, it has been updated a number of times, including the introduction of the Nismo trim. The 370Z Nismo features various aerodynamic, interior, power, handling and ECU tuning upgrades. But, despite the time and effort put into the 370Z over the years, it is almost entirely the same car that debuted back in 2009 in terms of design and technology. With it still being sold new in 2020, it no longer feels like the fresh modern sports car it once was due to its dated looking interior and minimally updated exterior.
11 years of production for a single model is a long time. Z fans have been longing for a new model for quite some time now…
Unveiled on September 15, 2020, the new Nissan Z Proto is a preview of the upcoming seventh generation Z-car to replace the aging 370. Finally!
Like Z cars of the past, it will feature a V6 engine, RWD drivetrain, two doors, two seats and a standard 6 speed manual transmission.
Exterior
The most interesting aspect of the Z Proto, rumored to be called 400Z once it reaches production, is the design. Let’s begin with the exterior. The exterior design is heavily inspired by classic Z cars of the past. This mainly includes the original Datsun 240Z from the early to late 70s and the fourth generation 300ZX of the 90s.
Front
The front fascia is all 240Z inspired. The headlight shape is designed to resemble the 240Z’s entire headlamp assembly, not just the circular headlights themselves, which includes the surrounding tear-drop shaped housing. According to Alfonso Albaisa, Senior vice president of Global Design for Nissan, the two half-circle LED daytime running light arcs are designed to represent the natural reflections of a 240Z headlamp assembly with glass covers specifically.
The grille is almost identical to that of the classic, with a blunt rectangular shape that visually connects to the headlights through a swooping bumper line that runs underneath the lights.
Another notable detail is the triangular bulge on the hood, just like on the original.
Tumblr media

Personally, I love the front fascia design as is because of its immediate resemblance to the original Z of the 70s in an elegant modern-retro rendition. But it is currently the center of debate and mixed opinion, with the grille being the most talked about aspect. One potential design concern I can see with the current grille shape is that it may be a bit too rectangular considering the flowing lines of the headlights and overall body shape. However, I believe that it is a necessary design element because of its key role in the Proto’s beautifully crafted resemblance to the original 240Z that takes no more than a second to recognize.
Side
Moving to the side-profile, and we see an overall resemblance to the classic sports coupe shape of the 240Z, with a sloped rear, elongated hood, small triangular rear-quarter window, and, my favorite, a rear-quarter panel mounted Z badge. Awesome!
Tumblr media

Rear
Now let’s get to the rear. Here we have a resemblance to a different classic Z-car. The 90’s 300ZX. This can be seen in the horizontal double rectangle brake lights, with a black painted area in between. This is exactly the design of the taillights of the 300ZX, but with modern LED technology. We can also see some 300ZX in the bumper design, with a horizontal line underlining the taillight assembly.

90′s 300ZX rear
A cool detail to note about the rear is the diagonal trunk-mounted Fairlady Z badge, made to the style of the original “Datsun 240Z” badge. “Fairlady” is the name used for Z cars sold in Japan. For example, the 370Z is called Fairlady Z Z34 in Japan (Z34 being the code for the sixth generation Z).
Tumblr media

Interior
Transitioning to the interior, and we have a modern, sleek and sporty design. The center gauge cluster is all digital. The main center dashboard is clean with minimal buttons. The steering wheel looks slim and comfortable for the hands. The analog gauges on top of the dashboard are a throwback to the 240Z. The contrast yellow stitching across the dashboard, armrests and seats is a neat color-coded touch to the yellow exterior. And finally, the 6 speed manual transmission and physical e-brake are welcoming features in a world where manual transmissions are becoming rare even among sports cars, and physical e-brakes have almost entirely been replaced with buttons.
Tumblr media
Z Proto interior
Tumblr media
Z Proto yellow-stitched seats
While the interior does not share the exterior’s affection for classic Z cars (aside from the analog pod gauges), its design looks well-suited for a modern sports car of the 2020’s.
An interesting detail about the interior is the door handles and side vents. I noticed almost immediately that they are identical to the ones in the 370Z, which itself had the same door handles and side vents as the preceding 350Z of the early 2000’s. This means that there could be more parts in the Z Proto that have been taken directly from the 370Z, potentially to reduce cost of production once it goes on sale. Personally I don’t mind this, considering the otherwise brand new design inside and out.
Conclusion
Overall, the design of the Z Proto has left a strong positive impression. It looks sleek, streamlined and beautifully modern-retro. Current information suggests a 2021 release, which would likely make the 400Z a 2022 model year car, with an estimated base price of $45,000. It will be powered by a 300 hp, 3.0 liter twin turbo V6 from the current Infiniti Q60.
Considering the estimated release date, the Z Proto is likely almost entirely production-ready in terms of design and technology. So despite being a prototype, what we see here today, is likely what we will see next year. Some minor changes are always a possibility though.
Enthusiasts have waited long enough for a new Z-car, and we are nearly there. A new era of Z is coming.
