In the male-dominated world of Russian politics the women around jailed opposition leader Alexei Navalny appear to symbolise his drive for change.
They are playing major roles as he prepares his Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK) for parliamentary elections in September, despite a police crackdown.
Russia's parliament is overwhelmingly loyal to President Vladimir Putin and dominated by men. Women form only 16% of the lower house, the State Duma, and about 17% of the upper house, the Federation Council.
Men do play a key part in Navalny's team: Leonid Volkov, now in Lithuania, and FBK director Ivan Zhdanov. And the FBK has dozens of activists across Russia.
But these are the women in the vanguard of Navalny's campaign to transform Russia......

Tumblr media

Russia pressures TikTok ahead of pro-Navalny rallies | DW | 22.01.2021
Tumblr media
Moscow’s police department warned it would suppress rallies supporting Russian domestic critic and activist Alexei Navalny that are set to take place on Saturday.
Navalny was arrested on his return to Russia from Germany on January 17, following a near-fatal poisoning with a nerve agent.
He was handed a 30-day jail sentence for violating the terms of a suspended sentence he was given in 2014 on fraud charges that he says are politically motivated.
“Law enforcement agencies will immediately respond to violations” to hold so-called “unauthorized actions,” Moscow’s Metropolitan Police Department said in a statement.
The department will take “all necessary measures to ensure law and order,” it added.
The police department blamed “the media, the internet and social networks” for organizing the demonstrations in its statement.
TikTok pressured to delete pro-Navalny posts
Following Navalny’s arrest, many Russians took to social media including TikTok, a video app popular among teenagers, and even dating app Tinder — to voice support and urge a large turnout at rallies across the country on Saturday.
Russian authorities threatened to fine social media platforms over protest-related content.
By Friday evening, Russia’s communications watchdog Roskomnadzor said TikTok had deleted 38% of the posts authorities deemed illegal. YouTube had deleted 50% of posts flagged by Russian regulators, the watchdog said.
DW Russia correspondent Emily Sherwin said one TikTok video trend that had surfaced was of supporters practicing their English in an attempt to avoid arrest at Saturday’s upcoming protests.
The users were inspired by a video of police at a protest saying: “He’s American, let him go!” went viral last year.
Other public figures, including some who usually keep out of politics, also spoke out against Navalny’s arrest. Monetochka, a 22-year-old pop star, called for Navalny to be released in a post on Instagram.
“This is not about politics but about civil society and justice,” she said.
Not just internet stars
Navalny’s associates also urged Russians to take to the streets despite official pressure. They promised financial help to protesters given fines on Saturday.
“Putin is doing everything to intimidate you,” Ivan Zhdanov, the head of Navalny’s Anti-Corruption Foundation, wrote on Facebook.
Russian authorities opened a criminal probe into protest organizers, accusing them of encouraging minors to commit illegal acts.
Several close Navalny associates, including prominent activist Lyubov Sobol and his spokeswoman Kira Yarmysh, were detained late on Thursday for calling on Russian’s to join the protests.
Navalny voices ‘respect’ for young supporters
Navalny voiced support on Friday for young Russians who have been posting messages of solidarity on social media.
“Respect to the schoolchildren who, according to my lawyer, ‘wreaked havoc on TikTok,'” the prominent Kremlin critic said in a message posted on Instagram via his lawyer.
In the wry message, Navalny also emphasized that he was in good physical and mental health.
“I don’t plan on hanging myself from the prison bars,” he quipped. “My psychological and emotional state is completely stable.”
In a separate post on Instagram, Navalny’s wife Yulia Navalnaya wrote that she plans on joining the protests in Moscow.
“For myself, for him, for our children, for the values and ideals that we share,” she said.

Moscow bars opposition candidates from city council election despite protests
Moscow authorities have barred 57 candidates from running for city council, including several prominent critics of the Kremlin-backed mayor, despite days of opposition protests.  The Moscow electoral commission has registered 233 candidates for September's election of 45-seat council, it said on Wednesday, the vast majority of them members of parliamentary factions loyal to Vladimir Putin's administration. One-fifth of prospective candidates were turned away, however, mainly due to alleged problems meeting a draconian requirement for supporting signatures. Candidates not from a parliamentary party must gather the signatures of 3 per cent of all voters in their district, or about 5,000 people, within a three-week period. Those denied included former liberal MPs Gennady and Dmitry Gudkov, allies of opposition leader Alexei Navalny and Ilya Yashin, an ally of murdered opposition activist Boris Nemtsov who has investigated corruption and malfeasance as head of a municipal district board. Meanwhile, dozens of candidates from the ruling United Russia party, who are running as nominal independents as the faction's ratings continue to fall, had their signatures accepted and were registered. Less than one-third of the population now supports United Russia, according to a state poll last week.  Supporters of opposition candidates have been protesting every evening since Sunday, when hundreds gathered outside the electoral commission. Police forced the crowd away from the building, beating some with batons and detaining 38 people. A major protest is planned for Saturday. Ivan Zhdanov and Lyubov Sobol, allies of opposition leader Alexei Navalny whose candidacies have been rejected, confront police outside the electoral commission on Sunday Credit: Pavel Golovkin/AP Disqualified candidate Yulia Galyamina, a university lecturer who spent Sunday night in jail, told The Telegraph and other journalists the next evening that Muscovites were “now in the same kind of glass cell, except they feed us better, the beds aren't so short and there are fewer cockroaches”. “Outside this cell, they're destroying our city, our environment, medicine, education and most importantly they're destroying our political rights,” she said.  Candidate Lyubov Sobol, who was also detained and later denied registration, has been staging a hunger strike since Sunday.  The controversy has drawn unprecedented attention to election of the rubber-stamp city council. While the council has limited powers to oversee Europe's second largest city, it does approve the annual budget and can, if it gathers the signatures of 25 per cent of voters, initiate a vote to recall the mayor.   In an episode reminiscent of Gogol's Dead Souls, electoral officials claimed that disqualified candidates had submitted signatures that were misspelled or were for ineligible or even dead voters.  But many living voters including well-known academics and journalists have complained that their signatures for opposition candidates were declared fake.   "Smile if you're against Putin." A few hundred at the latest protest against the disqualification of opposition candidates before Moscow city council election. Word is half dozen candidates will be registered but not the best-known ones. @IlyaYashin says he's already been barred pic.twitter.com/QO1GwQC4VI— Alec Luhn (@ASLuhn) July 15, 2019 “Dear friends, something very unpleasant has happened to me. The thing is, I don't exist,” sociologist Grigory Yudin wrote on Facebook after his signature was reportedly ruled a forgery. “My mom, hundreds of neighbours in my district and thousands of other Muscovites don't exist along with me. We are all ghosts.”  Mr Yashin said last week electoral officials had analysed the 15,000 signatures submitted by him and two other candidates in a mere seven hours and 20 minutes, which would suggest that they checked each signature in less than two seconds. At yet another protest on Wednesday evening, people in the crowd took turns stepping onto a ledge to speak, calling on fellow residents to demand an end to “lawlessness”. “You will give us honest elections!” and “Put Putin's gang on trial!” they chanted.   Ms Galyamina said she would appeal her disqualification, adding that Saturday's protest was vital to increase pressure on the authorities. “If we have people's support, we will be able to do something,” she said. “If we don't, it will be impossible to do anything, because our courts are not just.”

Russian opposition figure Navalny detained at Moscow airport after returning home following almost five months in Germany
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Russian opposition figure Alexey Navalny has been detained by police at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport after returning from Germany, where he had been recovering following an alleged poisoning attempt last summer.
Navalny and his wife Yulia left the plane together on Sunday evening with the rest of the passengers and drove to the terminal in a bus. The activist was arrested at the immigration desk.
Russia’s prison authority has confirmed the detention. Navalny, who was wanted for breaching the terms of his probation from a previous criminal case, will remain in custody until the court rules on pre-trial restrictions against him, it said.
Navalny’s plane touched down at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport, having been diverted from Vnukovo Airport where a large crowd of his supporters had gathered. There were minor scuffles with police and several arrests at the latter location. His close associates Lyubov Sobol and Ruslan Shaveddinov were among those held.
Earlier this week, it was revealed that Navalny had been placed on a wanted list in Russia shortly before the new year.
The opposition activist and anti-corruption campaigner is accused of violating the terms of his probation. In 2014, he received a three-and-a-half-year sentence, suspended for five years, for embezzling 30 million rubles ($400,000) from two firms, one of them being French cosmetics brand Yves Rocher. His sentence was later extended for a further year. It was due to expire on December 30, 2020.
On December 28, the Federal Penitentiary Service summoned Navalny to a probation office in Moscow, where he was to check in regularly due to the terms of his sentence. But he remained in Germany and didn’t attend the meeting.
The penal service insisted that the protest leader deliberately avoided their supervision, as medical papers published by the German doctors revealed that his health problems were already behind him and he was fit to travel to Russia.
The agency believes that this no-show and five other missed appointments should be grounds for Navalny’s suspended sentence to be replaced with an actual term behind bars.
On Wednesday, when Navalny was announcing his return from Berlin, he said that it wasn’t his decision to leave Russia and that he was eager to come home, despite what he called “new cases being fabricated against him.”
Navalny has been in Germany since late August 2020. He was delivered to Berlin in a coma after falling ill on a domestic flight in Russia a few days before.
Medics at the Charite clinic in the German capital claimed that their tests showed the activist was poisoned with the nerve agent Novichok, a claim disputed by doctors who treated Navalny in Siberia. Russian authorities have pointed out that all requests for the activist’s medical data have been left unanswered by Berlin, along with offers to investigate the incident together.
The opposition figure has blamed President Vladimir Putin for his alleged poisoning. The Kremlin has denied this assertion, with spokesman Dmitry Peskov accusing Navalny of having a ‘Messiah’ complex. Both Peskov and Putin have pointed the finger at the Moscow protest leader, saying he has been cooperating with American intelligence services. Navalny has threatened to sue Peskov in response.
Navalny was discharged from Charite a month after his admittance, but he opted to remain in Germany to continue his rehabilitation.
