LGBTQIA+ characters in Comics
These are characters who have first appeared or been revealed as LGBTQIA+ over the last year, or whom I’ve recently learned about or whom I hadn’t mentioned in previous posts of this type (that is, on my old blog). Needless to say, this list is just as highly arbitrary and incomplete as the others. (Yeah, I know DC Comics isn't the only game in town, but for the time being it's the only one I regularly read, so...)
Tumblr media
DC Comics
Shining Knight (Ystin) - non-binary
Tremor (Roshanna Chatterji) - asexual
Sylvan "Syl" Ortega - gay
the Aerie - non-binary & Wink - queer
Image Comics
The Old Guard
Yusuf "Joe" Al-Kaysani - gay
Nicolò "Nicky" di Genova - gay
Noriko - unspecified
Andromache of Scythia - unspecified, probably bisexual
Continuing the tradition from my old blog (which has been unceremoniously deleted by tumblr without much of an explanation why) I’m doing daily posts during June to celebrate LGBTQIA+ pride by showcasing openly LGBTQIA+ celebrities and various content about or created by LGBTQIA+ people such as music videos, characters on TV shows, movie trailers, …

PRIDE FANCAST, Part 3:
The last part in this little series (Part 1 and Part 2). Since I posted (a long time ago) a Marvel fancast, but never did nothing for DC, I’m making it up by giving more attention to DC here. Again, thanks @yourdailyqueer for finding these amazing LGBT+ artists!
Emma Corrin (non-binary, queer) as Ystin aka Shining Knight (non-binary):
I’m biased to talk about anything regarding Arthurian legends, but I really want this character to make their way into the DCEU. Please, DC, help us out, I know it will take a while, but I’m down for it. Now, to Corrin, you may know them from their AMAZING performance as Princess Diana in The Crown so you know their acting skills are top noch. They also resemble the character with the little exception on their hair and height. The hair can be easily solved with hair dye or a wig, but Ystin is pretty tall (6’0 if I’m not mistaken), meanwhile Corrin is only 5’8, but there are camera tricks for that.
Olly Alexander (non-binary, queer/gay) as Loki Laufeyson (genderfluid, pansexual):
When I started to plan this series of posts, I already went on to set a list for every character and this was the first pick I made right at the beginning. Alexander just has this very Loki-esque aspect to him, besides looking a lot like the character when his hair is in a darker shade. Alexander also has some acting credits to his name and he’s pretty solid as an actor, coincidentally, he is only a year older than Tom Hiddleston was when he took the role.
OBS: I love Tom Hiddleston, he seems like a very sweet person, but Loki is genderfluid, even in the myths you could see him going between genders so they could use the whole multiverse thing to look for someone who is genderfluid to take the character on their future appearances.
Erika Ishii (non-binary, queer/pansexual) as Desire (genderless, queer):
Since there is a lack of non-binary characters in DC (as well as Marvel, but we are talking about DC now), I took the freedom to bring someone that doesn’t show up in the main comics (not that I remeber at least), though very famous in their own universe. Plus I’m a huge fan of @neil-gaiman and loved Vertigo so, I had to bring Desire to this. The incredible Mason Alexander Park is already set to portray this beautiful character in the Sandman TV show, so see this more as an alternative casting. Either way, Ishii is another incredible artist that even has worked with DC before borrowing their voice to Child in Young Justice. Indeed they have an extensive curriculum with voice acting (THEY WERE IN SAILOR MOON, according to IMDB at least, if IMDB is lying to me I will be upset), but have done other works as well and if they were to take this role I think they would be simply phenomenal.
And once again, none of the photos or characters belong to me, all credit goes to their respective owners!
This concludes my little pride series, hope y’all are safe and had a great pride month. Carry on my rainbow fellows!

According to DC, if you're nonbinary and/or intersex, you get a cool sword and possibly live forever, and I think that's pretty cool

Ystin is loathe to admit it, but immortality has certainly made them less aware of when to take wounds seriously. While wounds can kill them, obviously none of them have yet, and Ystin has gotten used to shrugging things off for the most part.
They wince, hissing through their teeth as the alcohol hits the wound. "I felt that," they say with a breathy chuckle. "Go for it, my lady, I trust my friends."

DC's Demon Knights as Magic: the Gathering cards.
Tumblr media
Sometimes I express my love for character by writing fanfic, other times by writing essays. Occasionally however, I make Magic cards.
(Yes I'm aware D&D character sheets (and a monster stat block for the Queen) would be more fitting, but picking out that many spells was just too much for me. Plus D&D sheets are just less pretty than magic cards.)
Honestly it was really fun to do, trying to capture the core of each character in a colour identity three lines of rules text, and I put way more work into then i probably should have. Enough work that I have detailed design thoughts on all of these cards that I might include in a reblog later if anyone's interested.
Also might do a set but for Catwoman and her supporting cast later.

Seven Soldiers of Victory
Shining Knights gather. Will Camelot fall again? Not if the Seven Soldiers of Victory have anything to say about it.
Sir Justin, Shining Knight
Sir Ystin, Shining Knight, Sir Ystina
Gimmix, Jacqueline Pemberton
Green Arrow, Connor Hawke
Crimson Avenger, Jill Carlyle
S.T.A.R. Labs' Guardian, Michael
Stripe, Mike Dugan
Sir Justin and Sir Ystin belong to two different Camelots, but they both see familiar patterns playing out. Mike Dugan has finally graduated to hero status and uses his stepsister's Cosmic Coverter Belt, styling himself as simply...Stripe. Connor Hawke continues the Green Arrow legacy by following in his father's footsteps. Gimmix finds purpose rolling with her uncle's old crew. Guardian, a glorified security guard, takes his tech and skillset to the big leagues and proves himself as worthy as any other Guardian to weild the shield. Crimson Avenger fights along the Seven, but stands ready to avenge them if they fall.

Hey John, I saw your post on League and I wanted to ask you what your take on Orlando was as a character?
That's... complicated, because in many ways LOEG Orlando is specifically designed to cater to my specific interests in fiction.
Like, an immortal genderqueer character whose backstory ties together the three Great Medieval Matters, especially the Matter of Britain because League is incredibly Anglocentric? Sign me the fuck up, my favorite superhero is the Sir Ystin version of Shining Knight for a reason. And whilst I have... issues with how Orlando is written (my main one being... look, there were other ways of establishing their blood rages without engaging in the... fourth, fifth? example of rampant Islamophobia and Middle-Eastern racism in this series) but as a concept, I can't exactly say anything bad about Orlando. The problem comes with adaptation.
What, precisely, does Orlando of LOEG have to do with the Orlando of Virginia Woolf's book? Hell, what do they have to do with Roland, or Orlando Furioso or Orlando Innamorato? Moore had one idea - 'what if all these similarly named characters were the same person?' - but the problem with out of control syncretism like that is that it strips away everything that made the separate characters interesting in the first place. I've not read the other sources, but Orlando of Virginia Woolf is a great exploration of identity and how gender is tied to it, and also it's just kinda sweet regardless - it was written mainly as an elaborate tribute to Woolf's lover, and you can feel the gentle ribbing of her weird quirks in the page. LOEG Orlando can't hope to come close to something like that.
Bottom line... if you're looking for a take on this concept that isn't attached to LOEG and its everything, read Demon Knights.

Dronia was already riffling through her bag for gauze and a small bottle of alcohol. "That's not always a good sign, Sir Ystin." She immediately pulled the cap of the alcohol out with her teeth, spitting the cork aside, and held out their arm. "There could be something seriously wrong if you can't feel as much pain there. Or it could be nothing at all. I'll need to clean it up to get a good look at it." And with that, she tilted the bottle, "Brace yourself." And the alcohol poured over the open wound.
Tumblr media
Once the wound was rinsed, she gave it a good once over. "No infection that I can see but it doesn't look great either. May I patch it up? I'm skilled with a needle, I promise."

The warning is that this is Ace, and I think we all know how bad everything that happens to Ace is (sexual assault, torture, etc)
One week into tourney, after another practice where it had the time of its life eviscerating the Auradon kids with Jay's help, it noticed a lot of angry eyes on the two of them in the locker room. It quietly told Jay to leave with Ben as the guys who hated them were waiting for the other half of the team to leave. Ben was the last Auradon kid who wasn't waiting to jump them, and Ace made Jay leave with him under the pretense of asking Ben about something in one of their classes. He told Jay to send Coach in if Ace wasn't back to the rooms in two hours, but made it clear that Jay was not, under any circumstances, to come back into the locker room before the all-clear.
The original plan had been to just beat Ace, but they saw the scar on its stomach, the word "Slut" carved into its skin. It saw how dangerous their gazes got when they saw that, so it made a deal. If they left Jay alone, it would let them do whatever without fighting. There was no way in hell they could take it in a fight, which is demonstrated by controlling their blood, so they agreed. The assault that night was the easiest. Ace made it back to the dorms just in time.
It lied to Jay that it had just been jumped and beaten, nothing more, and that he didn't need to worry because it was used to physical violence. Jay secretly came back into the room while it was in the shower, knowing that something was wrong.
He heard Ace sobbing in the shower. Ace never cried, never.
Something very, very bad had happened.
Still, he left once a week when Ace told him to- when Ace told someone to run, they needed to run. If he stayed, no matter what was actually happening, his presence would just make everything worse. So he left. He always left.
It went on for five weeks before Ace and Mal were sparring in gym and its shirt rode up just a bit during a twist, showing deep bruising on its hip. Mal saw and Hryhoriy saw, but Ace argued with them until Mal and Ace were screaming at each other and Hryhoriy was trying to stop both of them, drawing the attention of the entire class. Mal knew that she definitely wouldn't get an answer with a couple dozen sets of eyes on it, so she dropped it and made Hryhoriy drop it, too. She promised him she'd get to the bottom of it.
Her original suspicion had been that its new boyfriend of eight weeks, Tavasya, was raping it, but a talk with Jay changed her mind. She decided to sneak into the space behind the lockers (at my school, there was a small hall behind the gym lockers in case a janitor needed access,) and watched what happened after practice. The first two days, nothing happened. It was just always tense and it was the last to leave.
The third day, she saw the hostile half of them team attack it. She'd never been so angry. It took everything she had to not murder all of them right there.
She tried to talk about what she saw (okay, confronted it, more like,) and it got angry. It threw her through a wall and fought her no-holds-barred in the middle of the hall, in front of the gods and everyone. It took Coach and a couple other teachers, Ystin and Hryhoriy included, to break them up. Coach was far stronger than it, luckily, and him being a djinni kept it from manipulating his blood, because it fought Coach with everything it had. It fought Coach for well over half an hour, even when Mal was mostly calm, to the point they had to threaten to sedate it. That was what finally made it stop fighting. It told Mal that if she got involved again, it would kill her.
It wasn't hard for the others to figure out what happened because of that debacle. There were few things that could make Ace react like that, and they knew Mal would never slut-shame or victim-blame it. It kind of confirmed their fears that the other shoe was going to drop for all of them, because the other shoe had clearly dropped hard for Ace. Still, Mal didn't want to let it happen. Ace was a member of her crew now, regardless of how much of a bitch it was, and she didn't like it when people touched what was hers without their permission.
So, she got Hryhoriy and Coach involved. I'll stop the post here because it is very long and the next part can only be told as a story, and that's going to be a horrific story.
