Summary: The Longest Johns, and The Yogscast, together with their online communities, have made a collaborative video of the song "Diggy Diggy Hole" from the Minecraft fandom. They each asked their followers to film themselves singing along and/or digging a hole. The video is a composite of all of those submissions.
Much eye contact. Under three minutes. Auto-generated captions. From the info under the video on YouTube:
This version of the song has been released as a charity single [For "Jingle Jam", an annual event], and all proceeds from its purchase will go to charity! Available from all major DSPs. Made in collaboration with The Yogscast and both theirs and TLJs communities. We all came together to make this fantastic arrangement of the internet classic that is Diggy Diggy Hole. A huge thank you to everyone who took part, and we hope you’re as proud of it as we are! Video edited by Abbie Darley Audio Edited by Robbie Sattin Mixed and Mastered by Paul Worthington
Here's the page listing the 12 charities Jingle Jam is raising money for this year:

Hi! I decided to record 2 hours of myself talking about my personal pick for the best character in the AA trilogy.
I really wanted to upload this fully subtitled but the auto-captions apparently take forever to process... so here is is without for now and I'll go back in the next few days and try to up the accessibility on it.
If you want to hear me analyze Franziska to a deranged degree and talk about how she's the whole reason I even got into AA in the first place, here's two fucking hours of that for you!
MASSIVE THANKS TO @cryptidwithacopiccollection FOR ILLUSTRATING A GENEROUS HALF OF THIS VIDEO!!!!! I AM STILL IN AWE AT THE NUMBER OF PIECES SHE MADE SPECIFICALLY FOR THIS PROJECT PLEASE GO SHOW HER SOME LOVE
Reblogs, youtube comments, and youtube likes are always nice! Thanks so much!

Just a silly reminder that u do NOT have to throw out ur favorite pants when u wear a hole in the thighs. This took me about 15 minutes (if that, idk exactly how long it was) to fix and I can't feel it when I wear the pants, nor can you see it when I have them on. I'll also link a video (it doesn't have added captions but I watched it through with YouTube's auto-generated captions and they seemed nearly exactly correct. And even without them you could probably learn it just from the visuals) about how to do the stitch I used below the cut and do a brief explanation of my process:}
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Backstitch tutorial:
https://youtu.be/sjHm8CL9WDA
Steps for mending:
1) Pin the patch to the inside of the hole-
I used safety pins because I find regular pins endlessly annoying. Since we'll be sewing from the front (you usually want to be looking at the side you want to be the neatest when you sew) you might find it helpful to hold your fabric up to the light and mark where the edges of the patch are, but I was able to figure out that sewing from end to end of the pins would keep me on the fabric.
2) Thread your needle-
I used crochet thread because that's what I had on hand. If you're using regular thread you might want to double it up so it's stronger. If you're mending something white or if you don't care whether the color matches, you can also use dental floss for something very strong. Here's a video on how to thread a needle (again with no official captions but good auto-generated ones)- https://youtu.be/S6u173Ap2mc If you want to use your thread as-is just tie a knot in the long end after threading. If you want it doubled up you can pull your needle to the center of the length of thread (so your tail and your working thread are equal lengths) and tie the two strands together to essentially create a big loop through the needle.
3) Backstitch around the edges of the patch (backstitch tutorial above) -
A backstitch isn't the only strong stitch you could use, but in my experience it's the easiest to learn and keep track of. You can also stitch across your patch in an X like I did, or in lines across it or on any other pattern you want. Your patch will be perfectly secure without these extra stitches, but I like to do them because they hold it flatter against the fabric.
4) Tie off your thread-
Video tutorial for this (same caption situation as the other videos) https://youtu.be/f3Hqv9n95R4
5) Done!!!-
That's it! Enjoy your newly repaired clothes and be free:}

HUGE shout-out to the Monkey Wrench series on YouTube for their closed captioning. Like holy shit. It's rare to find a video where they actually captioned everything correctly instead of those crap auto-generated jumbles. Also, the only series I've seen where they did "funny" closed captioning but it didn't very obviously detract from the plot and tone of the scene (Helluva Boss I'm looking at you), it was just a small change in how the word is written out to make sure the joke of the voice delivery gets across. No joke the best subtitles I've seen on an indie project ever.
Watch it with CC on I'm begging you, it's worth it. I mean, watch Monkey Wrench in general, but like. Cmon. The captioning.

Mathe-musician Vihart has made a video about watching the 2017 total solar eclipse, and her emotional response to it.
No eye contact. Time lapse drawing/crafting & some stop motion. Auto-generated captions in English. Just under ten minutes.

Currently writing a lecture on rewilding and reintroductions, and I want to include a video of That Scene from Jurassic Park where they discuss the ethical/conservation implications of actually resurrecting dinosaurs into an ecosystem not built to support them (you know the one, it's the one with Jeff Goldblum's fantastic "Just because you could doesn't mean you should" bit)
Anyway I can find it on YouTube, but there's a big problem: none are subtitled. All have auto-generated captions, which are shit on toast. And one of my students is HoH.
So I am now grumpily sitting here and making my own subtitled version using some online editing site or other while I mutter mutinously about how you can no longer add captions to other people's YouTube videos.

If I might make a submission to the "good vs. bad ways of using and/or thinking about AI" discussion:
AI quickly providing alt text or captions when it would be impractical for a human to get it done in the required time frame is good. Example: live subtitles on a stream. (Yes, that's basically AI. You train voice recognition programs on samples in the target language.)
However: AI being used as an excuse to not put care, effort, and resources into accessibility — when it would be feasible, as it usually is, for a human to write the image description or subtitles — is bad, and specifically, it's a deeply ableist misconception. Example: high-production value YouTube videos where the only closed captioning is inexplicably still "auto-generated".
As someone with audio processing issues, I'm glad that generated captions are at least occasionally useful, and as someone who writes a lot of image descriptions, I'm glad that technology can help extract text to save me some typing. But please, take it from me and my experience: no such tools I've encountered can consistently get near the quality of anything written by a person in all cases and contexts in which captions, IDs, etc are needed.
You still need to care about accessibility. Especially now that there are tools making it easier for you to do so — you just can't assume that they'll do the whole job for you.

Im pretty sure the community captions feature has been discontinued by youtube. Dnp have awlays been really good about making sure their vids are captioned, so i think that the dnpg caption issue os probably unintentional or they forgot about it, but they will 100% sort it out, they always do. I think they might have payed people to caption their main channel vids, so maybe theyre hiring someone idk.
yeah youtube community captions were discontinued, but phil has been using amara.org consistently since the feature was discontinued, and dan has used it to. they leave a link in their description box (i checked the latest upload from both dan and phil - the link is there) , but i believe they do have someone do the english subtitles and the community is for other languages. but none of the gaming videos have that link in their description, and also the last 6 videos (since golf) only have auto generated captions, so if they are getting them done by someone, theyve got a backlog of 6 videos

I fuckin hate how people on youtube shorts and tiktok have those auto-generated artsy looking captions that are WRONG. and they're part of the actual video, they put them there intentionally, it's not like youtube captions that people just forget about. WHAT is the point?? Take an extra five minutes to fix the nonsense word vomit plastered over your video or don't include them at all

THERES A PART WHERE I SAY HE PUT ON THE COLOGNE PRIOR TO THEIR FIRST ENCOUNTER, I MEANT AFTER, POST, NOT PRIOR OOPS
IVE BEEN MADE AWARE I MISPRONOUNCED AOF'S NAME, I'VE LITERALLY NEVER HEARD IT OUT LOUD BEFORE BUT HEY NOW I KNOW
so youtube fucked me for my background music (even tho it's royalty free and i've literally spoken to the artist) so i'm just going to have to post the twitch vod instead.
you should be able to click the cc at the bottom of the player for some auto generated closed captions, i hope. i'm not entirely sure how that works for vods but anyway i'll be sure to use absolutely zero background music in any future videos so youtube doesn't fucking eat them.
i'm gonna keep the LT tag muted for a few more days because i'm just still feeling pretty bad but like i said, pls feel free to dm me about anything.

Okay, so I do understand why you do this. I understand the censorship and things like that. But it is something I feel strongly about and something that upsets me and so I wanted to tell you.
You put captions on your videos. For that I am entirely grateful. I can actually watch things and understand the content without relying on bad auto generated captions, which to be honest are usually awful.
The thing I don't like is the beeping out of swear words in the captions. How you do it is considerably less bad than people beeping out the whole thing. But you put 'sh-t' instead of 'shit', at least I am assuming.
It feel kind of infantalizing and upsetting when people beep out words that they have spoken. So hearing people and people who do not need captions are able to have the full context, whereas people like me are not.
I am not sure if this is making sense, but I think it is something you should consider. Either putting the captions the same as spoken or not speaking those words would probably be better.
that absolutely makes sense, and genuinely, thank you for letting me know! for context/transparency, the reason i do it that way is because when I caption, I work off of the auto-generated captions (which, i agree, are terrible) and they automatically write every curse as “[____]”. because i’ve had random/unexplained/transphobic censorship probs in the past i try to Appease Youtube, and that’s why I haven’t fully written out curses.
that said, it’s been a while since i’ve had any issues and maybe it’s become an overly cautious bad habit. when i get home from work today i’ll edit my recent video’s captions and just write the full uncensored words in the future assuming i don’t have any problems!
thanks for making me rethink the habit :)

i really miss when people used to put more effort into their captions, especially on youtube. it seems like ever since captions became auto-generated, most people stopped putting in any effort towards making sure they’re accurate. even in videos with multiple speakers and no facecam there will be no specification in the captions of who’s speaking, no audio description, no punctuation, and so many words just completely wrong. i miss accurate captions
