THE CLIMB - Storyline (Assassination Classroom x Tower of God AU)
Status: to be continuously edited and added until I'm out of ideas
Tumblr media
Here it is, the finalized storyline. Just like the actual Tower of God series, this AU also has 3 parts. But I've only managed to roughly write out 3/4 of Act 1 (and I still have yet to add details). With Act 2, certain arcs have already been planned through but others have yet to be finalised (ToG Season 2 was mad as hell, I just CAN'T help but to pick out arcs I liked from the original and translate them to an AU with assclass characters). And finally, I'm still trying to figure out what I want to do with Act 3 (but one thing's for sure was that Team DREAM as a whole gets their deserved spotlight - I grew a soft spot for them, you see hahaha).
Tumblr media
Semi-annually, 1200 people are selected by Headon, the Caretaker of the Tower and the Guardian of the 1st Floor, to climb the Tower as Regulars.
Those Regulars will then be transported to 3 different testing grounds at the 2nd Floor.
So the 1st test at the 2nd Floor will begin with 400 Regulars present at each different testing ground.
The first 3 tests will all be elimination-types. The first elimination test will be: Narrow the number down from 400 to 200 by using any means.
Nagisa and Karma formed a truce then found Sugino while trying to stray away from the bloodied battlefield.
Chiba managed to prevent Nakamura and Maehara from killing each other when the test was about to be done.
The second elimination test will be: the remaining 200 Regulars must form a team of 3. Those who fail to be in a team will be eliminated.
Known teams in testing ground 1:
Karma, Nagisa, and Sugino
Chiba, Nakamura, and Maehara
Terasaka, Kurahashi, and Mr. Talking Ostrich
Megu, Okajima, and Kazuma
Known teams in testing ground 2:
Isogai, Kanzaki, and Hayami
Yada, Hazama, and Okano
Yoshida, Muramatsu, and Hara
Known teams in testing ground 3:
Mimura, Kimura, and Takebayashi
Sugaya, Fuwa, and Sachiko
Shindou, Satomi, and Kokona
Tumblr media
All the formed teams were transported to a new testing area – inside the gigantic mothership that was flying above the field they were all at before.
Chiba then gave a whole detailed rundown about the ruling class of the Tower to Nakamura, who lived somewhere in the Outer Tower (Residential Area) where many cultures normally have little to no awareness about the Royal Empire.
The Tower is currently ruled by King Daigou, who was the first to climb the Tower along with his 10 companions, who then became the Leaders/Heads of the Ten Great Families. They were Irregulars, meaning they were not chosen by Headon but instead had opened the gates to the Tower on their own. Irregulars are basically the Tower's rule-breakers, as they are unimaginably strong since they weren't restricted by the contract of a Guardian of each Floor, which is what Regulars form with them in order to be able to use the shinsu in the Floor they are in. Irregulars come in once every millennium.
It had been several ten thousands of years since King Daigou and the Ten Family Leaders had ruled over the Tower.
The Ten Families are so powerful that they rule over multiple Floors and are either affiliated or founders of certain well-known organizations. Every single descendant of these Family Leaders is blessed with strength, no matter how weak some of them are by their family's standards. Direct Descendants are especially gifted.
Though there are exceptions, the talents of these children usually depend on what their great family is known for - Akatsuki Family for their swordsmanship, Asano Family for their Light Bearers, Seo Family for their Scouts, Shimada Family for their incredible physical strength, Chiba Family for their Wave Controllers, Terushima Family for their mastery of manipulating Shinsu, Tsuchiya Family for having the strongest defensive power, Harukawa Family for their Spear Bearers and Lightning Users, Park Family for their great intellectuality with all researches about the Tower, and Yamazaki Family for their Flame Users.
Regulated by Test Administrator: Takokoro Takoro (Ranker – someone who had climbed the Tower and reached the top. They’re incredibly powerful). He brought his palm out and suddenly everyone was being pushed away by a strong current. Many have already flown towards the very back. While some managed to hold their ground for a couple seconds before the current became even stronger, thus ultimately pushing the rest of them back.
Now there's a thick water-like barrier before all of them, waiting to be crossed.
Tumblr media
As the Tower is filled with concentrated shinsu since it's basically its source of life, Regulars should be able to withstand at least a certain amount of concentration in order to ascend the floors. And so, the third elimination test will be: All members in a team must be able to pass through a barrier of high concentrated shinsu made by Takoro. If a member fails, the whole team fails.
The fourth test will be a psychological type, regulated by Test Administrator Irina Jelavic (Ranker): There are 10 identical doors in a room. Open the correct one in under 10 minutes.
Karma: "All of them looked the same to me. There’s no way to tell them apart and figure out which is the right one. So might as well ignore the first rule and just open a door in less than 10 minutes!" (Irina: “I guess that works too…)
Nakamura: "There are no ‘more’ hints..? But you haven’t given us any though."
Maehara: "Wasn’t what she just said a hint..?"
Chiba: "Uhh, those are instructions."
Nakamura: "That would only mean that the hints were already given before we even entered this place… like those unnaturally loud screams after a long time of dead silence from the inside. It was as if you were purposely letting us hear those screams and deduct something from them."
Team Chiba, Nakamura, and Maehara passed the door test after figuring out the whole point of the entire test.
A short break between the continuous tests. Chiba and Kurahashi instantly clicked while getting drinks from the vending machine.
Kurahashi Hinano is a feline person – a humanoid species with feline features and abilities. They tend to be Animas. They populate all the floors that the Chiba Family rules over.
Chiba Ryuunosuke is from the family of Chiba, one of the Ten Great Families that ruled over the Tower. This great family produces the strongest Wave Controllers. They also have the highest number of members.
Because there were too many teams remaining that monitoring their abilities at the same time was becoming too difficult, a bonus test was announced to be taken before the Position Test will begin.
Bonus Test: The Crown Game. Regulated by Test Administrator Karasuma Tadaomi (Ranker). Participation is optional and losing this game doesn’t mean failing the whole floor test. However, whichever team wins are automatically cleared from the entire floor and wouldn’t have to take the remaining tests.
Every Regular from all three different testing grounds will be present in the same testing ground.
Fast forward. Chiba, Nakamura, and Maehara were the team that won the bonus test. It was pure gamble in Nakamura’s part that Chiba has enough tricks up in his sleeve to prevent anyone from taking the crown from him, even if it’s Karma.
Chiba, Nakamura, and Maehara were all guaranteed automatic pass from all the remaining tests and leave the 2nd floor whenever they want.
However, Chiba insisted they stay for a bit to participate in the Position Test even if they won’t actually take the test.
He predicted that Nakamura would either be sorted to the Light Bearer or Scout position and will likely received the basic lighthouse or observer for free if she at least participates in the classes.
The same case for Maehara in the Fisherman position and thus might receive a basic needle for free if he joins the classes.
There are five basic Positions in a battle: Fisherman (Frontline Combat), Light Bearer (Support and Strategy), Scout (Intel and Combat Assist), Spear Bearer (Long Range), and Wave Controller (changing tides of the battle).
Karasuma Tadaomi handles the Fisherman classes
Hanamura Hanayo handles the Light Bearer classes
Irina Jelavic handles the Scout classes
Red Eye handles the Spear Bearer classes
Tadokoro Takoro handles the Wave Controller classes
That friend list assignment that the Scouts would have to fill up in a week, which was what brought a lot of the Regulars to become friends.
Fast forward. About 20 Regulars were guaranteed to pass the Position Test with how high their results are.
Hide and Seek Test. A Ranker (but with high restrictions) will be participating along with the Regulars.
Chiba, Nakamura, and Maehara, who already cleared the entire floor, can only spectate through the screen along with the Test Admins.
Luckily the team that failed was the one where most of the members have high scores in the Position Test, so not too many actually failed the floor.
Final Results were out and plenty have actually failed because some were too injured and some just weren’t competent enough overall.
The Final 2nd Floor Test was a team test, where the remaining Regulars must form a team of their own and take a certain test. It’s either that team passes or not.
4 teams were formed and thus, there will be 4 different tests: a Scavenger Hunt Test, a Lost and Found Test, a Zombie Test, and a Heaven and Hell Test.
3 out of 4 formed teams cleared their respective tests.
An official registration of teams was announced. Line-up changes in teams were made. There is also the option of not choosing a team to join in yet, of course.
Chiba, Nakamura, and Maehara were now included. Team END was formed and registered.
2nd Floor cleared.
They met Okuda Manami on the 3rd Floor.
Yukimura Akari joined Team END at the 5th Floor.
Chiba Ryuunosuke failed to clear the 8th Floor and would have to retake it after 6 months. He insisted Team END not to waste time waiting for him when they could just continue climbing, since he can surely form his own team and easily catch up to them.
Team END arrived at the 10th Floor.
Karma heard about an informant who is supposedly very strong but for some reason chooses to stay at the 10th floor for centuries.
He had plans to recruit said informant into joining Team END but was also curious about why they chose to stay at the 10th floor for so long.
Being a Princess of Daigou is a very big deal, as they are granted a portion of the King’s power, making them even more powerful, and a great amount of authority in the Tower – be it a high position in the empire, access to even the most powerful weapons, or even granted the opportunity to rule a whole Floor to themselves.
Princesses are already extremely strong when in battle that even a single Regular Princess can possibly take down all the other 400 Regulars by herself in a death match. Meanwhile, Princess Candidates, especially the ones who had nearly won their title, are not that much weaker compared to the already selected Princesses.
Ranker and High Ranker Princesses would be unimaginably strong. Two High Ranker Princesses from the Terushima and Yamazaki Families were so strong that they even outranked the majority of the Ten Great Family Leaders in the Tower Rankings (tied at Rank 7th), even if the Princess from the Yamazaki Family had been missing for millennia.
A Princess is selected and born every 300-500 years. They usually come from the Ten Families, but in a rare case would a strong woman from a less noble family would overpower her competitors and win her place.
Tsuchiya Kaho (Position: Light Bearer-Defender hybrid) was the strongest candidate of the previous Princess Selection over 300 years ago, after Chiba Rena Daigou who then became the selected Princess of that time.
Karma attempted to recruit Kaho but was solidly declined.
Kaho remarked that she would’ve considered joining them if the rumoured remarkable Spear Bearer from the Chiba Family was still travelling with them.
Karma instead just requested information about the 10th floor test’s details, which Kaho happily scheduled a meeting with Team END in a couple of days.
Kaho came by the dorm that Team END was staying at. Nagisa opened the door and was about to greet her but remained frozen due to how incredibly powerful the shinsu Kaho was casually exerting.
Maehara stiffened at the sight of Kaho, or specifically, the emerald jewel that was on her hairband. Kaho of course noticed him, even if Maehara didn’t realize it.
Barely minutes after Kaho walked inside their shared apartment, she was already giving pointers to some of the Team END members: like how Hayami would need to have observers instead of a Defender, how the Light Bearers in their team would need to do more snooping to get all the information they need, or the fact that a Light Bearer’s lighthouse can actually amplify a Wave Controller’s baang to make them more powerful and lethal, and etc.
Kaho then specifically called out to Maehara, who flinched.
Kaho: “Even if you have shit control over your lightning shinsu, you can still be flexible enough with how you infuse it onto the weapons you use. Heck, you just have to be flexible with the very weapons that you use and then infuse your lightning onto them. The results may vary but it’ll be fruitful at least.”
Hara served her tea and brought her some sweets, which Kaho highly appreciated.
Kaho then got a sudden call and took it. Team END could only watch nervously as she blows into anger at the caller.
Kaho: “You failed to use your observer to collect such vital information mid battle, even though you claimed to be really good at multi-tasking..? Gosh you’re the most useless Scout I have ever encountered in the near 400 years of my life!”
Kaho: “I’ve had high expectations of you since the Seo Family were known for their talented Scouts and yet you’ve only shown incompetence… I’m starting to believe that the unremarkable male descendants’ syndrome isn’t just limited to the Chiba Family…”
Kaho: “Since you’ve failed from giving me actual data in exchange for floor test Intel, your team is not allowed to leave this floor until I get my 20,000 points payment. Got it?”
After the phone call ended, Okajima asked Kaho about the data gathering assignment she gives to Scouts.
Kaho then explained that there’s a way to receive floor test info from her without having to pay her points for it, and it’s to take the 10th Floor test and retrieve important battle data that Kaho can use as more floor test intel.
Kaho: “You know? Info for info? But naturally, a mere floor test info isn’t just gonna pay up all the Intel you’re gonna get from me. This is just in case you don’t have enough points to pay.”
Not long after, Kaho began relaying information about the 10th Floor test to Team END, sending data to everyone’s pockets, lighthouses, and observers. The more detailed info they want, the higher Kaho will raise the price.
Team END wanted to know the vital weakness of the divine sea creature that they will deal with at the final 10th floor test, but Kaho said the price for that info is very expensive since it would guarantee a floor test clearing.
Naturally, the prize was really expensive that Team END was reconsidering.
But Kaho suggested that they won’t have to pay her points for that vital information if they instead give her as much information they can give about a certain remarkable Spear Bearer from the Chiba Family. Information such as his skills, abilities, background, and… personality.
And so they did, and they got the floor test info they need.
Okajima still insisted that he’ll attempt to look for more useful info about the 10th floor test to give to her. Kaho promised that she’ll return the appropriate amount of points to Team END if he managed to retrieve that data.
He got that data and Team END cleared the 10th Floor with flying colours. Soon after, they went to the 11th Floor, leaving Kaho behind.
The Tower’s Administration Office announced the names of the Regulars who had died while taking floor tests.
One of those names includes Harukawa Kiriya, one of the direct sons of the Harukawa Family Leader, who had died while taking the 10th Floor Test.
Kaho smirks while reading the announcement from her lighthouse.
Kaho: “I told him not to do it since it can get him killed but that arrogance never fails to leave their systems, huh? Now look where that got him. Such a distasteful family indeed.”
She then made a call to Tsuchiya Hibiki, a relative of hers, while going through the opened files on her lighthouse.
Kaho: “One of the few teams that recently cleared this floor just now is called Team END. They have a member named Maehara Hiroto and he’s clearly an illegitimate descendant from the Harukawa Family.”
She quickly sent a file to Hibiki, which is likely accessible information about Maehara, including his photo.
Kaho: “His lightning shinsu may be as strong as a direct Harukawa descendant’s but he lacks control over it and he’s not a Spear Bearer, so he likely isn’t affiliated with that family.”
Kaho: “But just in case, I want you to keep an eye on him until he’s out of our family’s territories. If he shows any suspicions that suggests his affiliation towards that family, let me know about it immediately. I’ll hunt him down myself.”
Surprised, Hibiki asked if Kaho is finally going to start climbing the Tower again.
Kaho: “The current missing princess’s remarkable younger brother is said to be finally arriving. I will be accompanying him from then on.”
Meanwhile, being a member of Julia’s team, Ryuunosuke had just arrived at the 10th Floor.
Chiba: “Ahh I hope I didn’t make her wait for too long…”
Kaho and Chiba had reunited ever since Kaho had been selected as a Regular over 300 years ago.
Kaho then officially joined Julia’s team. But since she had already climbed until the 20th Floor, she wasn’t allowed to take all the upcoming floor tests with the team until they’ve arrived at the 20th floor.
Privately, Kaho advised Chiba to tell Maehara to stop flinching or even just freeze at the sight of any Tsuchiya, since it’ll likely just get him in trouble more than anything. It’s already bad that he looks so much like a Harukawa, illegitimate descendant or not, so its advisable to stop flinching whenever he sees a Tsuchiya since it’ll make him look suspicious. Most especially since the Tsuchiya Family rules all over the 16th-29th Floors and thus, those floors are heavily populated by Tsuchiya descendants.
Kaho: “You said that his mother was a Regular who had stopped climbing, right? And that he lived at both the Inner Tower (Regular’s Area) and Middle Area (gate between the Inner and Outer Tower) of the 67th Floor? That suggests that he had nothing to do with the Harukawa Family so he should be safe enough… unless he actually met his father, that is.
Chiba: “He said he never met him. He wasn’t told of what exactly happened but from what he told me, his father supposedly left right before he was born.”
Kaho: “I don’t know what his mother warned him about us for him to freeze at the sight of me, but he’s completely safe if he’s got nothing to do with his father then. While we would still keep watch just in case, the Tsuchiya family don’t really bother with illegitimate Harukawa descendants, let alone kill them.”
Kaho: “Our goal was to not reduce the ever-growing Harukawa population, but rather strip them off their power. Specifically, those who become Rankers with the intention of sharing that power and influence to the Harukawa family as they bear their name.”
Kaho: “Ryuunosuke, your goal was to become a High Ranker, no?”
Chiba: “Yeah, and I feel like that’s also what my family expects from me.”
Kaho: “Naturally, because that would make you the first ever male descendant in your family to become a High Ranker. Since it’s such a big deal, everyone’s eyes are going to be on you if you were to achieve that and I wouldn’t be surprised if your family’s going to milk the hell out of the attention you’d be getting and benefit from it… just like what they did when Rena first became a Princess of Daigou.”
Chiba: “Ugh… that one lasted for years. It doesn’t help that both of our parents are Rankers, heck my mom’s a High Ranker, so even that was bragged about and made it into the headlines!”
Kaho: “Tell me about it… The Harukawa family’s no different for that matter. Shit, I think they’re even worse.”
Chiba: “Oh they’re definitely worse.”
Kaho: “With that thought in mind, if an illegitimate descendant has plans to join the Harukawa family when they’re becoming a Ranker or close to becoming one, that’s when we get rid of them. If your dear friend shows no such interest even after he had climbed so far high up, our family will definitely leave him alone. So don’t worry too much.”
The hatred between the Tsuchiya and Harukawa Families was so strong that killing and assassinating is even involved. Tsuchiya Kaho was promised to be fully forgiven by the entire Tsuchiya Family for failing to become a Daigou Princess if she managed to kill at least one member of the Harukawa Family on her own throughout her climb at the Tower.
The Harukawa Family was infamous for the womanizing tendencies of their male descendants, a reminiscent of their Family Head, Harukawa Izaki, who had many wives. Thus, it’s no surprise that not only does the Harukawa Family has the highest number of existing Family Branches, they’ve also produced the highest number of illegitimate children.
The main reason why the Tsuchiya Family made it their life mission to kill any Harukawa who shows potential or even interest to climb the top of the Tower was to forcibly make the Harukawa Family lose their power and influence by reducing the number of Rankers they will have despite their large number of descendants.
The Harukawa Family also has the same goal but are less successful at achieving it. This is because although they have high attacking power and lethality rate, every single Tsuchiya descendant, direct or not, were all born with incredibly high defensive power that only the most talented Great Family children can break through.
The only reason why the Harukawa Family had never surpassed the Chiba Family in terms of having the greatest number of children was because descendants of their family were actively being killed by certain members of the Tsuchiya Family, which also regulates their population.
Bearing the Tsuchiya Family crest meant being strong and brave enough to carry the burden of the family’s both good and wrongdoings. The crest is immediately obtained when a Tsuchiya successfully killed at least one Harukawa descendant. The crest is an emerald jewel that was attached on any accessory according to the bearer’s personal choice (e.g. Kaho’s hairband). Very few people outside the Tsuchiya Family are aware that a crest-bearing Tsuchiya meant that they have killed a Harukawa.
Maehara was one of those very few people who knew, hence why he froze at the sight of Kaho and her hairband.
Sometime later, Chiba called Team END to give each other updates about their respective progresses.
A little after that, Chiba privately called Maehara and told him what Kaho had warned and reassured him about.
Maehara: “Fuck, so she does know!”
Chiba: “Dude, you look like the typical Harukawa offspring. That yellow lightning isn’t helping either. So is being a playboy.”
The climb resumes.
Julia’s Team:
Nagasawa Julia
Okamoto Akeboshi
Kazukata Shindou
Akatsuki Seria Daigou
Ookuwa Sachiko
Tanaka Kazuma
Mori Mitsuki
Seo Hinagiku
Chiba Ryuunosuke
Tsuchiya Kaho
Kitazawa Ayaka
Park Jungyoon “Masato”
Fukiyose Eiji
Kanemoto Shiori
Tersuhima Daisuke
Shimada Miho
Julia’s team made it to the 20th floor. But because of how the 20th floor tests work, they have to be separated into much smaller teams.
Team DREAM was then formed.
Ryuunosuke, Kaho, Ayaka, Masato, Eiji, Shiori, Daisuke, and Miho
Realizing that a large-member team was just going to hinder them in the future with the way how some floor tests are done, it was decided that the split teams will begin travelling separately.
There were no complaints that Team DREAM consists of 5 different descendants from the great families since Julia’s Team is travelling with a Daigou Princess.
There's the Regulars Ranking which is dependent on what Floor one is on.
F-Rank Regular – those who come into the Tower on the 2nd Floor
E-Rank Regular – those who cleared the 20th Floor
D-Rank Regular – those who cleared the 30th Floor
C-Rank Regular – those who cleared the 50th Floor
B-Rank Regular – those who cleared the 75th Floor
A-Rank Regular – those who cleared the 100th Floor
After clearing the 20th Floor, both Julia’s Team and Team DREAM have become E-Rank Regulars.
Yamazaki Miki officially joined Team DREAM after the 21st Floor Test.
Team END encountered Team ACE at the 16th Floor and was furious that they failed to clear the floor because of them.
Chiba: “O-oh... the 16th Floor you say?”
Nakamura: “What floor are you on now?”
Chiba: “…the 25th Floor.”
Nakamura: “…Ryuunosuke.”
Chiba: “Yeah?”
Nakamura: “The plan was for you to catch up to us… not the other way around.”
Chiba: “...So I’m figuring out a way to persuade my family into getting us a large enough place to house us all at the 30th Floor when we arrive there. If everything worked out, you know where to look for me ahaha…
Team DREAM rushed to the 30th Floor in order to compete at the 30F Workshop Battle, which is an item tournament held for E-Rank Regulars at the Middle Area in every 5 years, with exclusive items made by the Workshop as prizes.
Almost all items and weapons of the Tower are made in the Workshop. Although there's a location on the Middle Area of each Floor, there are only 7 main headquarters and one of them is on the 30th Floor.
The Chiba Family rules all over the floors with the 7 main Workshops, including the 30th Floor.
Chiba Ryuunosuke plans to win the quinquennial Workshop Battle as a way to convince his family into doing a favour for him rightfully.
Chiba: “I may be one of the rarest sons that the Chiba Family have ever produced, having similar privileges as all of my sisters and all, but that doesn’t mean I’d just get everything that I want on a silver platter. And so I thought… If I did something favourable for my family, they might abide by my requests no matter how absurd they can be.”
Kaho: “A favour for a favour..?”
Chiba: “Yep! A favour for a favour.”
Kaho: “Huh. Knowing more and more about your family is starting to make me think that we’re not all that different in the long run.”
Chiba: “Hah. All the Ten Great Families are all just the same from the very beginning… though ours are particularly messed up. Perhaps that’s why there’s a growing alliance going on between them.”

BECAUSE I’M NOT POPULAR, I’LL READ WATAMOTE: CHAPTER #147
In today’s chapter, Watamote goes back to its roots as we find Tomoko hankering for some alone time. But you’d be wrong if you think it’s going to be that simple. Because underneath all the nostalgia moments lies what may just be the most crucial development that Tomoko has ever undertaken, and it’s the type of growth that could’ve only been realized by taking a quick trip down memory lane.
Chapter 147: Because I’m Not Popular, I’ll Wander Around Alone
Tumblr media
Oh hey, it’s that one male teacher who’s made periodic appearances throughout the series. Thank you for being there during Tomoko’s character establishing moment.
Tumblr media
So Wada is pretty good at English, huh? So not only do they both like manga, but Tomoko and Wada are also knowledgeable in the same subject. How nice.
Better break out the pitchforks.
Tumblr media
A common social “rule” in Japan is the emphasis on being able to read the room and reciprocating that atmosphere, or at the very least, not rock the boat. Tomoko has never really supported or condemned that notion, though unlike Yuri, is more likely to go with the flow. As someone who lives in a culture that discourages group mentality, it’s nice to see a character like Tomoko benefit from it.
Tumblr media
Cliques? What high school cliques? All I see is a group of distinctly unique girls organically enjoying each other’s company.
Tumblr media
This first-person POV shot looks straight out of a harem manga, only more authentic and devoid of cattiness.
Tumblr media
Let it be known that in this moment, Tomoko actually does break the mood. For the first time in as long as I can remember, Tomoko finds herself in a social situation with little risk, but actively breaks away from it in favor of alone time.
With that, the seed of Tomoko’s greatest epiphany has sprouted.
Tumblr media
Not in the mood to binge through twenty volumes this time, huh?
Tumblr media
Boy does this take me back...
Compared to Tomoko’s first solo trip to Not-McDonald’s, it’s amazing to see the way she’s changed alongside the ways she hasn’t. Her anxiety is 95% gone, with the remaining 5% accounting for general uncertainty, hence the very brief stuttering. Embrace that 5% Tomoko–that’s all you.
Tumblr media
Introvert Problems #051: Activities that are individual in nature double as recharging opportunities, but can come off as unfriendly if openly pursued.
Okay honestly, this is the type of growth I’ve been low-key hoping for since the very start of the series. Tomoko has finally realized that a desire to be alone is not something she needed to fix, but to accept. For the longest time, she didn’t realize a large part of her alone time was because she craved it. It brought her comfort, even if she didn’t want to believe it. And it took having a considerable amount of friends (whose companionship was definitely necessary) for her to understand that she didn’t want to get rid of being alone.
She wanted to get rid of being lonely.
Tumblr media
Professional slacking. Otherwise known as, putting in the bare minimum effort to avoid future hardships.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nom.
Tumblr media
I’m sure there are various theories for both perspectives, but I think the main takeaway is that food tastes the best when you’re in your comfort zone. Whether that includes company for not is based on your personal preference.
Tumblr media
Indeed, it is. This is none other than the class representative of Tomoko’s second year, Girl-With-Awesome-Hair. Naturally, taking up two whole panels is a clear sign that this isn’t the last we’ll see of her.
Tumblr media
Ah, yes, the classic “normies suck” self-fulfilling prophecy–other people are jerks, and that’s why I’m alone. Tomoko was guilty of having this perspective, but she didn’t really recognize it until the first cafeteria chapter with Nemo. That was the point she realized that all those “popular” people are genuinely nice people. It was jarring at first, but once Tomoko got used to people being nice to her, she stopped perceiving that kindness as some kind of exception, and just took it as normal behavior. While alluding to the possibility of getting shit-talked behind her back is more of her realism at work, it thankfully doesn’t fall too deep into self-destructive cynicism.
Tumblr media
Could it be that Tomoko’s recent friendships are subconsciously making her pursue more public activities even on her loner vacation? You better believe it.
Tumblr media
Tomoko’s become quite financially savvy lately, don’t ‘cha think? It certainly beats spending $150 on a whim for a Vocaloid.
Tumblr media
I cannot think of any other nickname that suits her better.
For a girl with the single most stylized face in the series, her entrance in this chapter sure makes an impact with the way she strikes such an alluring pose. Of course, that’s the joke, ain’t it?
Tumblr media
It would seem that we’re getting a “doesn’t-care-what-anybody-else-thinks”-type of character for her. Well, she’s a competitive gamer as we soon learn, so not giving a shit about her social status is kind of a prerequisite.
Tumblr media
I honestly did a double-take at this, as it’s the first time Tomoko has addressed Yoshida in her mind by her real name instead of “the delinquent”. We’re just a hair’s length away from reaching official “friend” status with these two.
Tumblr media
Aw, that’s adorable. Tomoko actually sort of cares about Yoshida’s financial wellbeing. I’ve also noticed a bit of a trend with Tomoko in that she gets “terrified” of her friends breaking her expectations of them, even if they’re not doing anything that terrifying. In Yoshida’s case, I think that’s partly because Tomoko has a bit of a superiority complex that would get broken if Yoshida was a better person than she likes to believe.
Tumblr media
Tomoko’s nicknaming game is on point today.
Tumblr media
It was hinted before that Futaki may be popular with the boys what with being a “gamer girl” and all. While it’s still a little too early to confirm or deny that, the fact that most of the onlookers here are guys has to count for something.
Tumblr media
I remember when fans gave her the name “Potential-san”. Given where this chapter is headed, I think that name fits even more with Futaki’s blooming characterization.
Tumblr media
It’s amazing how much of their personalities you can see in this single panel. Yoshida is all easygoing, grasping her drink from the top all aloof-like. Reina is the toughest, taking a quietly aggressive stance with her elbows on the table like a boss. And Anna is the most inviting, smiling with a crêpe in her hand to signify her (relative) sweetness.
Tumblr media
I find it fascinating that Anna can say some pretty rude things that borderline on mean, but it never really comes off as malicious (or is it just me?). She gives off that vibe of someone who mercilessly teases people in a way that’s “all in good fun”, and I hope to see more of that side to her.
Tumblr media
First off, Tomoko being a full table’s length away from the scary delinquents is gold.
Second and not to beat a dead horse, Anna’s a cool chick.
Tumblr media
I think I’m gonna need to call upon the Council of WataMote Fans with Too Much Time On Our Hands for this. Why exactly is that name so unusual?
Tumblr media
Of course, Anna wouldn’t be part of the delinquent squad if she didn’t shit-talk every now and then. But as I said before, she has this style of going about it that feels more like brash innocence than deliberate antagonism. Maybe it’s the heroin eyes...
Other than that, she does imply that she’s the smartest of her group, though whether that perception is actually reflective of herself isn’t certain yet.
Tumblr media
More of Tomoko’s superiority complex at work here. All she really knows about Futaki is that she plays games, and is assumedly a slacker. That fact that she still managed to outscore her must’ve been quite the blow to Tomoko’s insecurity. The only thing “worse” is if even Yoshida managed to rank higher than her.
Tumblr media
I love dialogue gags like this, though usually the characters’ inner words are in parenthesizes in-between their actual spoken words. If Tomoko actually lowered her voice at the word “lower”, that’d be humorously sad.
Tumblr media
It got “worse”.
Because a superiority complex actually requires a deep-seated sense of inferiority, Tomoko must be hella blown back right now. Grades were one of the only things she could feasibly claim dominance over, but now that she’s about to be usurped by the supposedly dumb delinquents, she only has her otaku interests to fall back on, which...isn’t always something to brag about.
Also, I especially like how Tomoko has started to compare delinquents to the yakuza. You know both would beat the tar out of her if they heard her compare them to the other.
Tumblr media
You know, it makes perfect sense that Tomoko would be a top scorer in Japanese, English, and History. Since she’s such an avid reader (even if it is only manga and light novels), all that extra literature has most certainly been indirect study material, even if the actual course material isn’t nearly as lewd.
Additionally, slackerism loves company.
Tumblr media
Yeah, if it wasn’t already abundantly clear than Reina is the delinquent among delinquents...
Tumblr media
...she is.
Tumblr media
Rekt to infinity.
But you know, this is actually an ingenious way to develop a gag character like Futaki. Her apparent gaming skills have always been played like a joke, but by having it be her long-term goal, it restructures that “quirk” of hers into a fleshed out personality. It doesn’t invalidate anything we’ve already seen from Futaki, and it neatly sets up a direction for her character to take.
Tumblr media
I imagine Tomoko must feel pretty betrayed right now. She herself entertained the idea of being a gamer, but discarded that dream likely because it wouldn’t be a “proper” job. Now that she sees this girl she hardly knows who apparently has the luxury of making that dream a reality, Tomoko’s envy levels just skyrocketed. Sure, Futaki has no loyalty to Tomoko, so that sense of betrayal has no basis, but like how Akari felt about “angelic” Komiyama in chapter 108...
“...this just isn’t fair!”
Tumblr media
I’m getting a Crazy Rich Asians vibe from this girl.
Tumblr media
So Reina’s the competitive type, huh? I can dig it. It generally fits with the whole “eyes-must-not-be-seen” aesthetic, but it also explains why she and Yoshida have that “vitriolic best buds” relationship going on. I’d imagine that Reina’s the type to bet high stakes if she can get away with it...
Tumblr media
Just ice cream? Eh, no big loss. Unless it’s chocolate chip mint, then it’s a very big loss.
I wouldn’t exactly have these rankings as indicators of their skill level, since mahjong does involves a bit of luck and certainly reading your opponents. While it’s surprising that Futaki ended up in last place, I think it does help to nerf her power level somewhat. Shiro from No Game No Life she is not.
Tumblr media
Careful, Futaki. That’s no excuse when you’re looking to be a professional gamer.
I must say, having Futaki unofficially join the delinquent crew is the last thing I would’ve expected, but it’s a delightful surprise nonetheless. They have some pretty good chemistry what them all being slackers/gamers. Plus, Futaki’s strange, but odd cuteness adds a dynamic that the delinquents were lacking until now.
Tumblr media
Delinquents may be delinquents, but they always know how to have a good time.
Tumblr media
Ho ho! So Nemo has officially been indoctrinated into their group? That poor, poor girl.
Tumblr media
Council! I require your guidance! Is Haruna the last name for Anna? Or did Tomoko just get her name wrong! I must solve this conundrum at all costs!
Tumblr media
If you try to tell me that Yoshida isn’t absolutely gorgeous in this shot, then you’re a big, fat liar.
Looking back on this chapter, Yoshida didn’t actually have many notable lines until this moment. But this single bit of dialogue greatly makes up for it. This is the very first time that Yoshida has personally offered to hang out with Tomoko without any sort of coercion or reluctance. It’s the most damning evidence we now have that says Yoshida now openly views Tomoko as her friend. As a long-time reader, I couldn’t feel any more proud.
Tumblr media
In comic book terms, we call this The Negative Space of Melancholy.
Tumblr media
And really, wasn’t that the “goal” of this series all along? Making friends wasn’t the real endgame. If it were, it very well could’ve betrayed what makes the series so special, hence why Tomoko’s growth was so agonizingly slow. Tomoko is, was, and always will be a loner. It was just a matter of time before she could make the most out of that status.
Tumblr media
It wouldn’t be a chapter about Tomoko’s growth if she didn’t wax lyrical about her current situation.
Even if self-satisfaction about being a loner is the “goal” of this series, reality is hardly so linear. As this chapter shows, Tomoko finds herself inexplicably drawn to social situations even when trying to avoid them. Not intentionally, but out of a natural, subconscious attraction to them. Tomoko’s life is a series of circular ebbs and flows. She’ll gain something at the cost of losing something else, only to regain a variation of what was lost once what was gained becomes stagnant. Such is it the path to making connections. While the hoops in Tomoko’s development appear drastic close-up, her life is a slow, naturalistic mountain climb when viewed from on top.

AKB48 Team Shuffle (Project)
This is my own project I’ve been working on for a while. This is NOT an official shuffle from AKS or anything like that. I do not work for AKS in any way. Thanks for reading.
[AKB48 Teams]
~This took some time since I really want the teams to be even in old & new as well in power & popularity. ~I also added a mentor system so that senior members like Miichan don’t take a leadership position away from a younger generation member but can still have a side position for support. ~If there was a 16th gen that isn’t listed that means I demoted them or there wasn’t room in the team I wanted them in.

2017.08.10 Soukai no Tiida Review!
I went to see Hiroki-kun again ^_^ and this one I was super excited about because of the story (it’s a fantasy set in the Sengoki era) and when the costume visuals came out, they looked freaking amazing! The colours are beautiful, look!
Tumblr media
I was a little worried at first because the site announced that it was going to be a lot longer than I was expecting, and I went on a school night too so I was a little worried it’d affect my work the next day BUT you do these things for the people you like, right?!

As expected of ASSH: a freaking HUGE cast.

STORY
Set in the country ‘Yamato’ in the midst of the Sangoku (Three Countries) period. We have a royal family in the land of “Ryuusa” who’s prince, Tiida, doesn’t really have an interest in inheriting the throne. One day, he accidentally finds and rescues a mermaid -- a very rare creature that pirates will track down and kill in exchange for a lot of money. Thus conflicts arise; people who want to protect the mermaid, people who want to kill the mermaid, we also have conflict between the royal family and it’s servers, as well as Tiida refusing to take responsibility.

REVIEW
I ended up being third row and SMACK in the middle! The theatre (CBGK Shibugeki) is actually really nice and the seats are super comfortable!! At first I was worried because the play was set to be over 2 hours without a break BUT because it wasn’t boring at all, I enjoyed the full 160 minutes(!), it didn’t feel long at all.
Tumblr media
This was very, very similar to D-Boys’ Yuhiden - probably because it’s the exact same story/history in terms of Tiida being someone who doesn’t want the throne and runs away from his responsibilities, as well as in the end deciding he needs to go out on an adventure and finally getting onto the sea to see what’s out there. But it’s different enough what with the mermaid aspect and I think this one had a lot more fantasy and fantastical elements such as mermaids, gods with magical powers, summonings and spells etc. -- also Yuhiden had like corpses coming back but this one just had human against human fighting instead.
The set was really cool for this, especially when they pulled out the massive boat that came out to the very edge of the stage! It was super close! And it was a little scary whenever they were leaning out over it!
Also they used a little projection mapping when the mermaids were in the sea which was cute -- I also loved the delicate touch of the two actresses swaying slightly when they were underwater as if the current was pulling them a little.
I already talked about the costumes a little above but I really did like the costumes in this! I especially loved Sofi, Teruya and Zan’s land outfit.
ASSH (alongside LiveDog and Odd Entertainment) always do such a good job of having strong female characters, and ones that kick ass to! This stage was no different! We had quite a few badass females in this; especially Sendao and Seimatsu!
The action was once again very, very good and crapped myself for most of the stage beause of how close I was (third row) to everything! Especially when we had giants spears and swords - like Kaihara and Nekomaru had!
Also there were a lot of story lines; some I cared for, some I didn’t but there weren’t too many.
Tumblr media
I want to get into characters, actors and individual scenes now...
Tumblr media
Oshima Ryo as Nakijin Tiida - not going to lie... I think he was the weakest character and actor. For some reason I just couldn’t warm up to Oshima and his acting. Also the other characters were far more interesting; I really didn’t care about his infatuated love with the mermaid; I really didn’t care for this storyline even though it was the main damn point of the whole show xD I was more interested in the pirate group and the other country’s group fighting each other for HER because her meat is so valuable. I was also more interested in the pirates groups’ relationship, the hate and turmoil between the Ryuusa brothers, the plot to kill Tiida and take over the Ryuusa family, as well as Kaihara and Mao’s relationship. Kanjyu was a character who I definitely wanted to know about too. So unfortunately his character and the stages main plot line were the weakest parts for me personally, especially because...
Tumblr media
Kuryu Mina as Zan - at the end, she decides to change back into a mermaid, after all the witchcraft and crap Tiida went through to give her legs(!), and be with her sister, even though they’re probably going to get caught and killed and sold off eventually. But anyway... I think Mina did a good job! I think she covered a naive mermaid very well (even I’m laughing at this sentence). I really loved it after she got turned into a mermaid, we got this The Little Mermaid twist where she got her legs BUT in return she lost her voice and she did a very good job with trying to force herself to speak and just squeaky exhausted noise would come out. Also she sang the theme song at the end and her voice is beautiful. I already mentioned above too; her outfit when she was on land was gorgeous! It was this white tweed-light dress. I really liked it.
Tumblr media
Ukai Mondo as Kyan Zoui - Mundo always does such great roles. He always does such a good job and his action and fighting is always great too! He always looks so damn cool too! I was a little surprised at how little stage time he got this time around and that he was a side character rather than a main, but I still loved his character. He was playing Tiida’s childhood and best friend, and I loved his dynamic with Tiida; he was trying to be serious but Tiida was just being airy-fairy and not listening to him so he got stressed a little >.<
Tumblr media
Nagahara Masaki as Ganeko Temi - Unfortunately I don’t remember him all that much. I remember he was cute and he played the guy who wanted the throne and to take it from Tiida. Also he had a crush(?) on Teruya who was only ever interested in the other two boys. He was a cutie!
Tumblr media
Tanaka Hiroki as Nakijin Kaji - Here’s my boy!!! He played Tiida’s younger brother who clearly felt he was more ideal for the throne and did have remorse towards his brother and even fought with him, but once it turns out they’d be manipulated and there were bigger things to worry about, they managed to figure it all out ^_^ As usual Hiroki got to do action scenes and look very cool! Also his costume is gorgeous! I love the colours. BUT I’m sad he had such a small role -- I always want him to have more stage time xD BUT!!! Dang his voice! He used a deep voice this time around -- which I am not used to! I’m so used to his normal high pitched voice <3 it’s so cute... but this time around, the deeper, low toned voice made him sound so sexy ^_^ well MORE sexy. And I got his tokuten at the venue so here’s that:
Tumblr media
It’s cute right!
Tumblr media
Ichikawa Miki as Nakajin Maaji and Maruyama Raiden as Ganeko Uusu - These two worked as a pair because Ganeko is sort of like her son’s teacher but he’s also somewhat of her butler. Also they ended up having a romantic relationship together. It was cute how at first she was like ‘I can’t be with you! What would the kingdom think! It’s not very queen like!’ but at the end she’s liken ‘I love him and that’s all that matters!’ and it was cute seeing them get together in the end. He was so sweet and supportive of her.
Tumblr media
Mizuki Momoko as Teruya Rami - This bitch! She was all nice and loveydovey in front of Kaji, Temi and Tiida but it very soon came to light that she was just manipulating them all and only wanted to be with the son that would ultimately get and take the throne from the other brothers. She was the one who set it all up that turned Temi against Tiida and why Kaji also ended up fighting his brother at one point. She was just crazy and horrible in the end. Her costume was gorgeous though! Oh and she wouldn't dare get her own hands dirty
Tumblr media
Oguri Ryo as Kagushi Kanyuuji - FINALLY a role where he doesn’t die! He’s died in freaking EVERYTHING that I’ve seen him in! And I went into this one thinking ‘I’m gunna see him die, and cry again ain’t I?!’ BUT he didn’t! I really liked his character in this one too! He was more of a minor character this time around but I really enjoyed that his character just completely trusted and supported his friend no matter what. Kanyuuji’s relationship with Kaihara was so great! I really loved their dynamic and their relationship and their end scene was great too! In the end they set out on the sea and Tiida goes with them. Ryo’s costume was ALSO great and colourful and beautiful.
Tumblr media
Yamamoto Teppei as Kaihara Tenyou - I already said I loved his relationship with Kanyuuji, BUT, unlike Tiida and Zan’s relationship, I really enjoyed his relationship with Mao. His main objective is that, a few years ago, the goddess Mao appeared to him and asked him to fulfill her wish. When he asked what he wish was, she said her wish is to die and he promised her that he would be the one to kill her. So his objective this entire stage is to find Mao once again and kill her. And this is why I love his and Kanyuuji’s relationship; Kanyuuji’s could’ve simply been like ‘a god? You’re gunna kill a god? That’s ridiculous!’ but instead he’s like ‘okay! You go do that but I’m coming with you!’ and just completely trusts him! This duo were so interesting! They’re both cuties too so that helps >.<
Tumblr media
Yoshida Munehiro as Motake Jakotsu - his character was pretty interesting. At first he just seemed like a typical, crazy bad guy BUT once the fighting kicked in, he started using unearthly god-like power (if I remember correctly, he controlled thunder or electricity) and after Tiida attacked and stabbed him, he somehow came back to life (after Nekomaru somehow sacrificed himself and gave his life to Motake) which means some sort of magic or godlike power is going on with him which was super interesting. I also really liked the scene between him and Nekomaru around the beginning of the play when they’re making their plot to get the meraid and the scene ended with Motake on top of Nekomaru and going to kiss him as the scene faded to black -- of course(!) that made me happy! xD
Tumblr media
Akaba Mio as Eshirdera Nekomaru - I’ve seen Akabe quite a few times now; both on stage and in person; he’s definitely someone who’s very comfortable as he is and always does roles very similar to himself and he does the type of roles that I too enjoy. So this character was no different. He was this beautiful, somewhat feminine character who was in love with his boss and had this sexy air to him. He also knew how to use a spear in such high skill and he made that also look sexy. And when his boss was attacked he was very sacrificial and thought his lover and leader more important than himself which was beautiful too! I really liked his character in this too.
Tumblr media
Mochida Chihira as Seimatsu - She was badass! She was very Hijikata like; all about the samurai-ness. Also she always had this samurai stance and lowered her voice to make her more powerful and intimidating. I loved just how stereo-typically samurai she was! I loved her fights and her final scene was badass too! She was like ‘I’ll die fighting!’ and that’s what she did! She gave it her all! Bad. Ass. Super, super loved her fight with Senado!!
Yoshino Teppei as Eriguchi Teraji - A huge apology but I don’t remember this guy at all! as he even in this? I don’t remember him!
Tumblr media
Hiroya as Riisu - His was basically Japanese Jack Sparrow. He did the exact same walk, exact same hand gestures; everything was the spitting image of Jack Sparrow, which made me a little disappointed. I kind of wanted Hiroya to add something to it. It’s fine if you take inspiration from Sparrow and use parts of him in your character but to pretty much copy him and not add anything new or different was a let down. It was okay and interesting in the beginning but I very soon got tired of his performance in this one. Which is sad because I’ve seen Hiroya act a number of times and he can act but why he decided to just be Japanese Jack Sparrow... it makes me sad and disappointed.
Tumblr media
Kamikoshi Sho as Giya - ShoKun!!! This little cutie!! His character was like the baby of the group, naturally, and he was protected by the rest of the people in his group. I really liked this one scene though, where he finally gets his hands on a gun, like he’d been wanting to, but at the moment, he got so scared and full of fear that he couldn’t shoot and closed his eyes and miss the shot etc. It felt rather realistic, especially because this happened in the middle of a battle sequence too! Sho is always such a cutie <3
Tumblr media
Akiyoshi Aya as Lala, and Hanaoka Meika as Rei  - These two were cute! They were similar to Sho’s character in that they were very new and didn’t really know much about fighting and it was a huge shock of reality when all of a sudden all this fighting is going on and they have to somewhat grow up and get involved in the fight in order to help each other and Riisu.
Tumblr media
Miri as Ion, Ogura Erikerina as Akari, and Araki Miyu as Senado - They played the queen’s bodyguards/henchmen. Unfortunately, I don’t really remember Miri, BUT I do remember thinking that Erika played almost the same character in this role as she did in Soul Flower, so nothing interesting or exciting there for her unfortunately. I really enjoyed Senado though. She had an interesting fighting style - she was like duel wielding two wooden blocks, used more for defense rather than to attack with. Like I said before, her fight with Seimatsu was badass!
Tumblr media
Shimozuki Yukari as Watashimi - He’s just this random god that shows up to talk to Mao now and again. His visuals are both awesome AND terrifying at the same time because of that almost fully dark blue / black eye going on.
Tumblr media
Yamamoto Mayu as Sofi - She played the worrying older mermaid sister when Zan disappears and goes to the human world. There’s a few scenes with her and her sister and she’s just pleading for her sister to come back to her but her sister in like ‘no sorry I’m going to stay and live here with the humans’ which is pretty damn harsh, leaving her sister all alone int he ocean! But luckily Zan comes to her sense and joins her sister again. Although I feel like her sister should’ve been more pissed when Zan came back - she was going to abandon Sofi! At least be annoyed THEN be happy your sister is back! her costume was gorgeous too! Especially the top half, it was like this light blue laced dress top.
Tumblr media
Funaoka Saki as Mao - Mao was both a sweet but sad character. Sweet because she was kind enough to help Tiida turn Zan into a human - but with a price. Tiida ended up having this almost black poisoned veiny tattoo up his left arm and while it allowed him to also use godly powers - like with Motake - it also turned him crazy and evil and unable to control the power when it was unleashed. But it’s sad because all she wants to do is die and she’s unable to due to being a god.
Also now I feel super bad for the actress! I thought she was in her early thirties but, looking at her profile, she’s only two months older than me! Do all us 24 years look that old?! Damn... I feel real bad and feel real old now.
Tumblr media
Ichiose Hidekazu as Ganju - this guy was so cool! I super loved him! I wish we had a stage JUST about his backstory and about him! He seemed to be this old, mystical guy who just knows what the hell was going on, and would offer his help, but at the same time, would not tell anyone about his past nor who he really is. We know he trained Tiida and Riisu so he really is this old, wise Yoda-like character. He was super sexy too! And his fighting was awesome! His visuals alone made him look badass! I really want to know more about this character!
*
The ending was left open ended too! We had the pirate gang going back out into the ocean, as well as Tiida, Kaihara and Kanyuuji out off on an adventure together. We don’t know much about Ganjyuu at all(!), and I’d quite like to see if any shit happens now that Tiida is gone and Temi and Kaji are left to rule the kingdom without him.

That’s all I think I have to say! This is another ASSH production that I want on DVD! And I feel like this stage could be or is part of a series so I am very open for a sequel and more stages in this world! Especially if it’s got my boys like Hiroki-kun Sho-kun, Mondo, and Ryo in it!!
**
Hope you enjoyed this! Have I interested you in some of the lesson known actors in the Japanese stage world? Y’all know my love for Hiroki-kun anyway xD and Sho-kun is a newbie I super love too! Some regular faces popped up here too that you should all be just as familiar with as me! ^_^

I'd like to know your thoughts on the senbatsu for the upcoming 47th single. I tried going on the stage48 forums to find some thoughtful discourse but all I saw was people complaining and then basing decisions off the sousenkyo.
Hah, trying to find “thoughtful discourse” anywhere in the 48G fandom is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Too many complainers everywhere. But I digress.
For ease of reference, let’s bring up the line-up for Shoot Sign:
AKB48 (18): Iriyama Anna, Onishi Momoka, Oya Shizuka, Okada Nana, Oguri Yui, Kashiwagi Yuki, Kato Rena, Kawamoto Saya, Kizaki Yuria, Kojima Haruna ©, Kojima Mako, Komiyama Haruka, Takahashi Juri, Minegishi Minami, Mukaichi Mion, Muto Tomu, Yokoyama Yui, Watanabe Mayu
SKE48 (3): Goto Rara, Suda Akari, Matsui Jurina
NMB48 (5): Ichikawa Miori, Shiroma Miru, Yamamoto Ayaka, Yamamoto Sayaka, Yoshida Akari
HKT48 (4): Kodama Haruka, Sashihara Rino, Matsuoka Hana, Miyawaki Sakura
NGT48 (2): Kitahara Rie, Nakai Rika
Just by eyeballing the line-up, there really aren’t that many major surprises. While the choice to go for a 32-man Senbatsu for the 47th single leaves Management with a lot more room to work with, it still adheres to the basic principles of the Senbatsu selection process: namely, Profitability and Exposure (I’ve discussed this before on this blog, so I’ll just refer you to my previous post to elaborate on it). The ratios are a bit less skewed towards the former objective, with a bigger Senbatsu allowing for more members in the latter category, but the gist of it still remains. The only major difference this time is that Management now has two sets of Sousenkyo results to work with: the “official” one, as well as the NHK Kouhaku one. With that in mind, we can categorize the chosen members as follows.
(A) Profitability: Members with Sousenkyo-proven popularity
Members within Top 12 at Sousenkyo
45th Sg: Sashihara Rino (1), Watanabe Mayu (2), Matsui Jurina (3), Yamamoto Sayaka (4), Kashiwagi Yuki (5), Miyawaki Sakura (6), Suda Akari (7), Kodama Haruka (9), Muto Tomu (10) Yokoyama Yui (11), Kitahara Rie (12)
NHK: Yoshida Akari (6), Ichikawa Miori (10), Oya Shizuka (12)
Obligatory Seniors
Kojima Haruna, Minegishi Minami
(B) Exposure: Junior pushes & Borderline-Senbatsu
Junior/Next-Gen Pushes
AKB48: Onishi Momoka, Okada Nana, Oguri Yui, Takahashi Juri, Mukaichi Mion
SKE48: Goto Rara
NMB48: Shiroma Miru, Yamamoto Ayaka
HKT48: Matsuoka Hana
NGT48: Nakai Rika
Borderline-Senbatsu
Iriyama Anna, Kato Rena, Kawamoto Saya, Kizaki Yuria, Kojima Mako, Komiyama Haruka
I don’t think we really need to argue about those in Category (A): their place in Senbatsu is backed up by hard numbers, and there aren’t any members that have been left out (the only one missing is Shimazaki, and she’s a graduated member).
The main target of complaints, I would assume, are those in Category (B). The entry requirements here are a lot less well-defined, and tend to be based more on Management’s predictions and choices. Even then, however, I personally don’t think there’s much to dispute here.
Okada, Oguri, Takahashi and Mukaichi are well-established next-gen pushes, with Mukaichi and Okada already being regular frontline members in AKB48.
Goto, Shiroma, Yamamoto Jr. and Matsuoka have all been installed as next-gen Aces within their respective sister groups, and their appearance here is only a natural extension of that portfolio.
Some might take issue with Nakai, given that Kato Minami was the one that ranked in at Sousenkyo, but I believe that Management has made it clear enough that they want Nakai at the front, especially with her being appointed Center for NGT48′s upcoming debut single.
The “Borderline-Senbatsu” category isn’t unfair, either - All those members (Save for Kizaki, who dropped down to the Next Girls tier) are eligible candidates for Top 16 next year, so I don’t think it’s unreasonable for Management to want to give these members that extra chance to grow their fanbases a bit more.
The only real surprise here is Onishi Momoka - she hasn’t been considered much of a frontliner in Team 8 until recently, so perhaps Management has plans in the pipeline for her.

BECAUSE I’M NOT POPULAR, I’LL READ WATAMOTE: CHAPTER #122
I’m gonna keep this introduction short since there’s so much to unpack and I’m dying to get to the good stuff.
It’s Tomoko’s third year, and any worries you might have had about Tomoko’s new life being too “normal” and “boring” were thankfully all for naught. This chapter reminds us that while circumstances may change, Tomoko is still an awkward little weirdo, and if her new classmates are any indication, her third year is going to be one wild ride.
Chapter 122: Because I’m Not Popular, I’ll Become a Third Year
Tumblr media
The wording here is suspect as the narrator is definitely referring to Tomoko’s social circle than just Tomoko exclusively. It’s one of those changes that seems minor at first glance, but means more for long-time readers of the series. It’s sort of an “official’’ statement on how the series as evolved from being single-protagonist oriented to becoming an ensemble cast. And frankly, our side characters have earned it.
Tumblr media
Damn, Tomoko can actually pass for being almost, kinda attractive here.
Tumblr media
One thing that I’ve always liked about Yuri (in addition to everything else about her character) is that she’s very emotional underneath her comparatively stoic demeanor. We’ve seen before that Yuri cares very deeply about the things that are important to her, but struggles to openly express it. The fact that she has to physically calm her nerves is a testament to how much she values her new set of loner friends.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
About time we got their full names, and fitting ones if I’m not mistaken (feel free to correct me if I am). From my understanding, “Tanaka” is a surname with very plain connotations, which matches quite well with the average-like Mako.
Then there’s “Masaki”, which is supposedly a very boyish name for a girl, but it’s written very femininely. It’s so perfect for Yoshida, that I can’t help but wonder if her parents predicted the future or something.
Tumblr media
They say this smile sustained the lives of impoverished children for generations.
As I said previously, Yuri is strongly emotional even if it doesn’t show on her face. When her expression is physically visible, it’s a good indicator that she must be bursting with emotion. In other words, that tiny smile equates to jubilant fireworks.
Tumblr media
Hey, Komiyama. It’s been a while. I’m glad Nico Tanigawa made the decision to put her in Tomoko’s class, as I imagine that the reason we don’t see much of Komiyama lately is because it’s difficult to include her in Tomoko’s social circle without someone like Yuu or Akari to bridge the gap between them. Maybe now they’ll be able to clear up any lingering bad blood between them.
I am somewhat surprised by how 'meh’ Komiyama’s reaction is. If this were one of the early chapters, I’d imagine she’d react more negatively to being in Tomoko’s class. What does this say about their current relationship? Probably that they’re still frenemies, but have actively stopped trying to antagonize each other. Looking back, it was usually Tomoko would cast the first stone, leading Komiyama to retaliate. But now that Tomoko has stopped this, Komiyama sees no interest in interacting with her more than needed. Let’s see if they can keep this up...
Tumblr media
Quickly fanbase, time to connect names to faces!
Tumblr media
Minami, your cuteness rating just dropped a peg.
The relationship, whatever it may be, between Minami and Yuri has always seemed uncertain, if not somewhat rocky for obvious reasons. But I think that with this moment, it’s safe to assume that Yuri and Minami honestly don’t like each other. I wouldn’t call it a personal vendetta, but by calling Yuri “that girl’, Minami makes it clear that she doesn’t view Yuri highly if she only calls Yuri by her name when Mako’s around.
Of course, Yuri and Minami aren’t about to get into a brawl like Tomoko and Komiyama might. They’re too respectable for something like that. Though I wouldn’t be surprised if we get some passive aggressive jabs between them now that they’ll be “fighting” for Mako’s attention.
Tumblr media
This is a quality of Minami that makes me dislike and begrudgingly admire her.
It’s been established that Minami has quite a lot of friends. Not surprising as a hardcore extrovert like her likely finds it easy making connections. We can see this in action, where when faced with the dilemma of having no one to talk to, Minami easily walks up to a classmate and invites herself into their group, with no hesitation whatsoever. She must be a blast at parties.
But at the same time, she quickly dismissed the fact that Mako is in her class, meaning that she requires more than one person to satisfy her social comfort zone. I’m not saying she doesn’t care about her friends–her insensitivity seems inconsequential to her high extrovertism. It’s more that she requires a high degree of social interaction whereas Yuri doesn’t need nearly as much to feel that same degree of satisfaction.
Tumblr media
Don’t worry, I know this is a mistranslation.
I do like this little exchange between Heroin-chan and Yoshida, because it gives a bit of insight into their friendship. Heroin-chan actually has to tell Yoshida to come hang out with her, as if expecting that the latter wouldn’t bother unless prompted. But she says it not out of annoyance, but in an endearing way. It’s pretty cool to see that Yoshida has friends whom she’ll actually tolerant teasing from. It’ll probably take all year before Tomoko can do that.
Apparently Eyeless-chan is a slacker, huh?.
Tumblr media
Side note: these panels are really busy. Must be the cherry blossom petals.
I do wonder just what Tomoko was hoping for regarding whom of her friends/acquaintances would be in her new class. You’d think that after making her new friends, she’d be glad to be with them for their third year. But judging on her reaction, having so many people she already knows was not her desire. As for why, I think it may have to do with balance. A loner-type like Tomoko would probably prefer to have one or two people see can connect with in her class. But having so many people is probably overloading her capacity for social interaction.
Having Komi-something there likely doesn’t help either.
Tumblr media
It’s going to be interesting to see just how Itou will fit into this story. She does seem very bland and boring at first glance, but then again, so did Yuri. You could even say that Itou is to Komiyama what Yuri is to Tomoko. Maybe she’ll surprise us.
Tumblr media
Nemoto’s dark side truly is the scariest thing about this series.
I’ll be frank, I’m not entirely sure what’s going on in Nemoto’s head when she said this line. It could be a variety of things, but at the very least, she already knows that Tomoko did the same thing to her, so playing the innocent card seems to suggest some distaste for Tomoko. If I had to guess, Nemoto looks as if she’s bothered by Tomoko trying to pass off as “normal”, so she called her out in order to reveal her weird side. I don’t believe she’s doing this out of malice, though, but more on that later.
Tumblr media
I saw the punchline for this coming an ocean away…
Tumblr media
...Doesn’t make it any less spectacular.
Tumblr media
Yeah, it’s no secret by now that Ucchi’s desperate for some Tomoko stalkin' lovin’. The only question was when Ucchi would finally accept the truth.
That moment when Ucchi gave her meat was the realization, but this breakdown is the acceptance. All those other times, Ucchi could easily talk her way out of any accusation about her attraction to Tomoko. But as of late, Ucchi has been increasingly public about her growing affection. Sure, Ucchi could’ve stayed silent if her friends egged her on about it. But I’d be hardpressed to see how Ucchi could possibly deny her friend-crush on Tomoko when throwing a tantrum for everybody to see.
Tumblr media
Looks like Emoji 2.0 is going to be an official side character. Heh.
At first, I was pretty bummed that Ucchi wasn’t going to be in Tomoko’s class anymore. But in trying to look at the bright side, I think this situation has a lot of potential(-san). By keeping Ucchi away, all of her stalking–yes, it will continue–is going to look even more ridiculous since she’ll actually have to put some real effort into it. This subplot would likely just go through the motions if they were in the same class, but a decision like this could finally lead to the climax of Ucchi’s crush.
I can see it now: Tomoko starts acting all friendly with Emoji 2.0, Ucchi spots them together, Ucchi loses her goddamn mind.
Tumblr media
Long time, no see, Hatsushiba. I certainly wasn’t expecting to see him again, but I can dig it. If you recall, Komiyama kind of thinks that Tomoko has a crush on this guy. If the mangaka decides to reopen that can of worms, it’s sure to be a riot.
Tumblr media
I guess we needed a quick reminder that Tomoko doesn’t go to an all-girls school.
Tumblr media
C’mon, Yuri. Don’t be so kuudere.
Yeah, Mako’s probably exaggerating when she said it was Yuri’s dream. Although, from Yuri’s smile earlier, I wouldn’t put it pass Mako to interpret her friend’s simple yet meaningful desire into something much more grandiose. Perhaps for Mako, a dream is a dream, no matter how small.
Tumblr media
Battle of the ellipses.
Tumblr media
Did Tomoko seriously not know Ogino was going to be her homeroom teacher until this very second? Guess for all of her development, her obliviousness is something she still has to work on. (If this is actually plausible in a Japanese high school, please correct me, so that I don’t make an ignorant ass of myself).
Tumblr media
I’m curious as to how Tomoko thinks that having her “friends” around will protect her from Ogino’s meddling. Maybe it’s because if she gets embarrassed, the fallout won’t be so bad if everyone already knows what to expect from her? Is it because her friends will back her up when Ogino throws her for a loop. Maybe the class has some kind of camaraderie because they know what a pain Ogino can be? Could be a bit of all of that, but after reading the rest of this chapter, Ogino will likely be the least of her worries.
Tumblr media
Well damn. Nemoto ain’t pulling back this year.
My first instinct was to take this as a provocation. But looking over it again, I realized she’s kind of taking a jab at herself for also being a normal girl. Nemoto has always been a bit of an enigma. Her perspective on Tomoko has been fuzzy ever since Tomoko found out her secret. I originally thought Nemoto’s occasional rudeness was from a minor superiority complex. But now I think that Nemoto is kind of projecting herself onto Tomoko. As if Tomoko’s decision to be “normal” reflects the soreness Nemoto feels about her own self-imposed normalcy.
Tumblr media
First things first, Nice to officially meet you Katou. Your role as Class Mom will be severely tested.
I actually don’t think Nemoto’s gotten more snappish necessarily. It’s very possible she’s always had a ruder personality and she’s just really good at hiding it. But because Tomoko knows a side of her that nobody else does, Nemoto might be more comfortable letting her edginess show in front of her.
Tumblr media
Having her real interests in parentheses has always been a favorite visual gag of mine.
It’s funny how Nemoto’s impression of Tomoko, and how Tomoko perceives that impression aren’t really the same. As I stated before, Nemoto doesn’t hold any real animosity towards Tomoko. Rather, she’s kind of envious of Tomoko. She sort of respects Tomoko for being true to herself, even if that “self” isn’t all that admirable. So when Tomoko pulls the normie act on her, it’s natural that Nemoto would be disappointed.
Of course, in Tomoko’s eyes, Nemoto’s just being a bitch.
Tumblr media
I’ve always appreciated that no matter how screwed up Tomoko’s logic could be, she was never wholly off the mark about her proclamations. There’s always a kernel of truth in Tomoko’s words, whether it’s about the anime industry or being a loner in a world of non-loners. Even the absurd things like how popular kids have orgies at karaoke bars were likely based on some media she’d consumed.
Her little rant about how normies have to try so hard to be bland is actually something that can be kind of supported. Sure, it’s still generalizing and spiteful, but it’s also real–one of those implicit things that nobody says but everyone knows is true. I guess it goes to show that Tomoko, for all her inner ranting, isn’t totally ignorant to how the world works.
Tumblr media
Slow clap. Slow clap. Slow clap.
There’s that old-school cringe humor. But of course, it can never be that simple. As others have pointed out, this isn’t just your typical Watamote awkwardness. The cringiest moments in the manga were always about Tomoko saying/doing something painful due to twisted logic. In this case, sure it’s painful, but there isn’t anything especially weird about wanting a boyfriend, even if it is worded in way that is so humorously casual.
In fact, you could even say that Tomoko is expressing a confidence here that she never would’ve had in her previous introductions. Perhap this is a kind of development for Tomoko in that her brashness, which was once her weakness, can now be her strength. It’d be nice if this starts to become a trend for the series.
Tumblr media
I wonder if this is going to be a regular thing now where Tomoko has a “routine” to conduct whenever she gets overwhelmed with anxiety. At least she’s no longer wallowing in self-defeat.
Tumblr media
Funny, remembering all these cringe-inducing moments would just stress me out even more.
Confirmed: Ogino is responsible for 50% of Tomoko’s worst moments.
Tumblr media
If this were any other time Tomoko, I’d agree with you. Unfortunately, you just opened up an unspoken rivalry with someone who’s basically a much, much better-adjusted version of yourself. Good luck.
Oh, Komi-something. You’re baseball fangirlism never ceases to amuse me. I do find it interesting that Komiyama is a lot more upfront about her passions than Tomoko is. Granted, I know things like anime and manga are much less socially acceptable than being a fan of the Lotte Marines, but her obsession does seem to be on a higher level than Tomoko has for her own interests. But if she can be passionate without hesitation, I do find myself admiring Komiyama for it.
Tumblr media
Meme-worthy quote right here.
Tumblr media
The framing is phenomenal in this panel. Tomoko is partly cut off, but her expression mirrors Nemoto’s. This presents the thoughts here, which are coming from Nemoto, to apply to the both of them. Can’t wait to see even more parallels this year.
Tumblr media
This is one of those awesome developments that’s been happening in the periphery, but didn’t become apparent until a moment like this. That being, Tomoko is not only being acknowledged by her peers, but is actually influencing them in a relatively positive way. It started with Yuri, with Tomoko unknowingly encouraging her to be more expressive, and now it’s happening with Nemoto and her decision to be more honest with herself. It seems to me that the more people learn about Tomoko, the more that they start seeing some of the negative aspects of her character as potential positives. More and more, Tomoko seems to be functioning on an even playing field with the normies in her class.
Nice to see that Nemoto’s friends don’t seem to hold her dream against her. See, Nemoto? That wasn’t so bad.
Tumblr media
Wow, I wasn’t expecting Nemoto to take such a jab at Tomoko. I know that it’s likely meant to be endearing, but unless you already have an understanding with your classmate, I can’t see how you can call them a loner without it being just a liiiiiitle bit insulting. Will this eventually lead to some sort of fallout between them? We’ll just have to see.
Hooo boy, what a chapter. I made my predictions in the last review on who I thought would be in Tomoko’s third year class, and I made my choices based on what I thought would be realistic for the series. That being, a class with some fan favorites, and a couple of underdeveloped extras. But in true Watamote fashion, we get something expected, but not unsatisfying. It may have felt a little too convenient to have nearly all of Tomoko’s acquaintances in her class, but in way, it poses another challenge for Tomoko. As her personality becomes more and more transparent, I think it’ll be interesting to see which of her relationships will improve, which will stagnate, and which will decline. The cast may have quadrupled in size, but Tomoko Kuroki will always be the center of it.

Sorachi began the manga in 2004 and it continues to be ranked among the top-selling manga in Japan. The manga has more than 50 million copies in print in Japan. Viz Media published the first 23 volumes in English. Shueisha published the manga’s 68th volume in Japan on April 4. The manga entered its final arc last July.
The manga inspired a television anime that premiered in 2006 and continued (with several extended hiatuses) until 2013. The fifth and latest Gintama television anime series premiered on January 8, the show began airing reruns in April.
