Head canon time: Yang angst that might be off from canon but hey, I like this better. (Dunno if someone has said this before but here we go.)

I’ve gotta give Yang best older sister reward, despite me being a huge fan of Winter.

Yang and Ruby had lost their mother at a young age and I head canon both Tai and Qrow to be mentally unavailable. Both of them started drinking heavily because of it. By no means were they abusive but they were very pulled away and just there existing but non-existent. Yang probably had to learn how to cook at a young age and the only times did their two adult figures snap out of it was if they were in danger or they had to do a job. Qrow probably went on more life risking missions when he began drinking, rarely being around to help them, and Tai probably shut down all together pulling himself away from his kids. He was probably thinking that by pulling himself away he’d protect them from his grief but all it did was hurt them and become a selfish act to hide away.

Yang caught on pretty quick. She would have most likely have gotten hungry and went to ask Tai to make something but instead found him dazed. Trying to snap him out of it wouldn’t of worked despite however many punches he wasn’t responding. So her next best option was to take some money from his wallet and go buy some food for the two of them after they had become really hungry. After having to do this for the next week she’d have clicked that he wasn’t going to snap out of it any time soon so she started teaching herself how to cook.

I actually head canon Yang to be a pretty amazing cook but doesn’t do it or purposefully messes up because she gets bad memories from that time. She’d also be the one to teach Ruby how to bake and Ruby, out of respect for Yang, would keep quiet about it.

She’d go on jobs to get money despite being young. Tai finally snapped out of it when Yang was on her last four years. He tried to say he raised them and helped them out, as well as Qrow, but Yang snapped and yelled about how she was the one raising Ruby while they were morning over a death for 8 years. The guys weren’t allowed into the house until a month had passed by.

While I’m sure Weiss would have called Yang slacking, I actually doubt that she is entirely like that. I think she kept perfect grades during Signal academy because she didn’t have faith in her father and uncle and strived to make a better life for Ruby. She’d make sure that she’d be a huntress, a strong one so she could keep Ruby safe.

When she got into Beacon she was in full honesty, really happy. Her goal is to travel and see more because she’s been trapped in patch but further more she wanted to make sure Ruby was steady and had a strong role model. When Ruby told Yang that she was skipped ahead two years Yang was split on emotions. She was proud of Ruby and to see her training be recognized but also worried. She’s just lost out on finishing what I’m going to call ‘high school’ and will become a huntress at an early age. What if she gets hurt, dies, what if Yang herself dies and leaves Ruby.

Now throughout this time, Yang would tell stories about their mother from all the jobs she’d tell her about and how cool and strong she was. Ruby was always enthralled with their mom despite not knowing her to well. She looked up to her a lot, and Yang was happy for her when it came to that. Yang was also rather sad, all the things she’s done for Ruby and she’s not the person Ruby looks up to?

Well that’s what Yang thinks but I’d say Ruby always put Summer as second best. Despite knowing she was ready to help the people and all, she looked up to Yang more. Her older sister threw away her childhood to ensure she could have hers and she can see that Yang deals with abandonment issues by the time the Fall of Beacon was over. I also think that’s why she’d approve of Blake and Yang because Yang has finally found something other than Ruby that makes her extremely happy. Weiss too but she’s put on the sibling aspect and Blake was the first person to come back.

Anyways sad, angst head canon for Yang growing up and her devotion to her sister.

so i’ve been watching rwby

and as I’ve been doing so I’ve been posting reactions to my friends. After S5, S6, and S7, in particular, I had a lot of thoughts and opinions. More under the cut. I’m going to write fic aren’t i?

Season 5:

1. Where is the first/autumn relic?! Like, we've established that Ozpin hid it well, yet for some reason it doesn't feel like that's the whole story - given where the relic was hidden this time, in some sort of n dimentional desert (where, if you looked closely you could see similar ##chemtrails - could people just walk through that desert to get to all of them? 2. I find it hilarious that Weiss just got out of Atlas only to go back, I'm very curious as to what sort of ~~damage this reveals about her in the coming seasons, but I'm also very intrigued by how reintroducing her to her father with the rest of team RWBY will shift/alter the narrative of powerlessness that he seems t be pushing toward her. I'm esp. intrigued as to what his reaction will be to Blake (as he seems very anti-faunus). 3. WHAT DOES THIS ALL MEAN FOR THE #YANGST. 4. The show has been pretty constantly showing us that most of Ruby and Yang's family seems like chill folks, but the ##absentmother trope is strong here. Given that it seems like only Blake has a mom, does Blake's mom adopt everyone? 5. Blake having a fairly functional nuclear family is fascinating to me, because it makes a lot of her choices seem way more political (at a very young age) as opposed to just a kid who got in over her head with a boy who was a bit older. I'd love to know more about this. 6. as a multishipper, I hurt all over.

Season 6:

Item the FIRST: Weiss barely making it out of Atlas only to be dragged, albeit somewhat willingly back to the source of all of her ~ trauma & family drama ~ I am curious to see how this plays out and generally hope that Weiss somehow stabs her shitty dad and Draco Malfoy rip off brother while being reunited with her 100% Cooler Than U sister. Also that Cooler Than U sister works on the unresolved sexual tension she CLEARLY had with Qrow.

Item the SECOND: The show's thoughtful handling of Qrow's alcoholism and Ruby's gentle efforts to push toward sobriety without like being annoyingly moralistic about it. It could have been handled so differently and I really, really enjoyed that it was handled in the way it was.

Item the THIRD: Weiss' new red scarf. adsfajshfaksdjfhthatsgayweissaksdfhaksdjfh

Item the FOURTH: The various Poor Life Choices Salem made during our brief sojourn to the Department of Backstory. Also Jinn is amazing let's keep her around. She can join Jaune, Ren and Nora as a 4th member of their team and just hilariously be naked all the time. 10/10 would watch for hijinks adventures.

Item the FIFTH: Ozpin sulking that he got all his relationship drama put on main like that

Item the SIXTH: Jaune's gay sister and sister-in-law and their baby and and and and (idk I just loved this).

Item the SEVENTH: BLAKE AND YANG HELD HANDS AND MURDERED THEIR TRAUMA TOGETHER PRAISE JESUS AND CAN I GET A HALLELUJAH? NOW KISS.

Item the EIGHTH: My multishipper ass saw that moment between Weiss and Yang when they were stuck in the basement and I'd just like to say I would be happy to see that too.

Season 7: Item the First: Weiss has a mother. Which we all logically knew she did but that scene with her in Jacques' office was just... a lot. Also raised some very interesting questions. When will Weiss and Ruby bond over alcoholic parental figures, I ask you. On this front, I am also now supremely, supremely curious about Winter's relationship with her mother.

Item the Second: Leftist Weiss. Well we all knew that Weiss wouldn't have voted for her dad anyway, but I think the tension between Weiss's clear orientation toward helping people and government for good and her father/sister's appealing to/embodying other forms of authority (corporate/military). This also raises an interesting point of contention between Weiss and Winter, as Winter's sort of this embodiment of what I'd maybe call a conscientious soldier – where she’s clearly in possession of independent thoughts and opinions, yet also seems to want to appeal to a higher authority whenever she feels conflicted (e.g. “Ironwood is making the hard decisions so we don’t have to.”). This actually draws a very stark line between Winter and Weiss – as Weiss has always been a freer thinker, who can and does think for herself and operate from her own moral compass. The moment at the end of the season between Weiss and Winter was just so delicious as I hope (HOPE HOPE) that they’re setting up for a ~~moment of clarity~ for Winter where she has to make a decision on her own that defies orders in some way for the greater good that Weiss can see so easily. (Also, please, my good gay sisters: Hug. It. Out.)

Item the Third: Leftist Bees (well really, leftist Yang, Blake was always a revolutionary). I absolutely loved the Everyone Is Lying moments in this season, and I do hate that the Bees were the ones caught out in it first. Black and Yang telling Robyn the truth also struck me as something that the pair of them would do anyway – the only other character I could see possibly slipping and letting info get to Robyn is Weiss, but I also got the sense that Weiss understood the politics of the situation better than anyone else and because of this was playing it pretty close to the vest. The Bee’s decision really jives with their partnership. As did getting to watch them fight together so much this season, they’re evolving together, and seeing them fight in tandem is a delight.

Item the Fourth: Splitting whiterose. I like Penny. I actually love Penny. I love Penny and Roby’s dynamic. And their friendship. And how ridiculous they are. But it really struck me that how the whiterose partnership kept on getting split until the final fight against the Spice Force Five. I’m sure there’s a reason for this but I don’t like it and I won’t hear it or respond to it.

Item the Fifth: The Not Spice Girls/Spice Force Five. Love these idiots, but they’re all cops. Marrow is the most delightful of them and seems like he’s about to go on a journey similar to Winter, Harriet sucks a lot, Clover was a delightful almost rip but also mmmwhatchusay. I sort of hated the juxtaposition between team RWBY and them, with the ‘just following orders’ mentality and the lack of friendship/cohesion between these guys. I guess now Winter can join them and they so they can have their Posh Spice.

Item the Sixth: Schneewood Forest. I feel like I could write a whole elaborate backstory with these two. There’s something there – the unstoppable force meets immovable object of it, plus the idea of someone who challenges Winter’s entire belief structure just by being an okay person ~with a merry band of queers~. I feel a lot of things. I want to explore this. Stop me I am in a PhD program.

Item the Seventh: The Tinman’s Heart. Having read all of the Wizard of Oz books, as well as the Wicked series, I actually appreciate that this series is taking nods from both sources for these characters. James’s decisions are … not great but I can see his logic – well right up until the part where he shoots poor Oscar. That was just rude. Also I do love watching him fight because he’s so very, very good.

Item the Seventh: Bisexual Bobs. How very Bi of you Blake. And how useless lesbian of Yang to be all flustered about it. Please kiss.

Firen Lhain: Chapter 503: Grasp

Aurora opened the door as Weiss returned to her room, and Weiss looked at her with surprise.

"Miss?" Aurora asked her.

"How did you know I was going to be back?" Weiss asked her.

"A servants primary role is anticipation." Aurora said with a bright smile.

"Says who?" Weiss asked, and Aurora looked down nervously. "I did not mean..." Weiss tried to say.

Aurora seemed to regain her confidence, "It was Klein." she said, and she wanted to step aside, but the coffee in Weiss' hand caught her eye. Weiss looked nervous until Aurora stepped aside. Weiss stepped into the room with Aurora closing the door behind her. "How did your meeting with your father go?" she asked. Weiss elegantly sat on her couch and they dropped her head forward.

"He wants me to sing." Weiss uttered.

"Oh - my - gods!" Aurora exclaimed, "You have such a beautiful singing voice!" Her smile quickly disappeared into shock, "I am sorry for that outburst." She dropped her head and Weiss did not say or do anything in reply. Aurora lifted her head to see a subtle smile.

"Most people these days," Weiss stated, "prefer the meaningless pop."

"Popular music doesn't put your soul out on stage like classical music does." Aurora voiced, "I wish I could have gotten into it..."

"Did you not have the talent?." Weiss asked, and Aurora nervously looked down, "Ah, yes... of course."

"So, Miss, would you tell me about your concert?"

"It will be a fund raiser for Beacon Academy."

"That sounds wonderful!" Aurora exclaimed. With this Weiss walked back her own thoughts, and it was actually a good idea. If she had to be locked in a guilded cage, she might as well use it to help Beacon. She breathed in deeply and regained her calm.

"I will need your help getting ready for it." Weiss stated.

"Of course, Miss." Aurora replied.

Taiyang sat on the couch next to Yang and leaned forward without looking at her. He breathed in and sighed. "We... need to talk..." Yang briefly looked at him before looking quickly looking forward again. "We... have to talk about your arm..." Yang reached over to her right arm, grasping the emptiness below her stump. "Do you know why your arm hasn't regenerated?" Taiyang asked. Yang just nervously leaned forward. "Because you don't want it to. You need something to fight for. For me, that was Summer, Raven... and Qrow... What do you have to fight for?" Yang wrapped her arm around her legs. "Your team?.." he asked, and RWB_ flashed before her eyes. She winced at Blake's appearance. "A boy you like?.." With this Jaune's dumb face appeared, backlit with a warming sunrise. With this she smiled.

"You need something to get you to want to get onto your feet," Taiyang continued, "you need something to get you to want to get back into the world. You... also need to eat..."

"Daaad." Yang admonished.

"That Jaune guy had it right, you can't recover without eating... MORE than you used to. You need to regrow an arm, and you can't do that without food. Besides, you're wasting away."

"Daad!" an offended Yang replied.

"You have always been so powerful, so forceful." Taiyang said, "I hate to see you slip away." Yang nervously looked forward. "Do you have that thing to fight for?"

"Yes..." Yang nervously said.

"Then fight for it." Taiyang stated. Yang nodded. "And to start," he said, and stood up, "we're going to make sure you've got yourself one hell of a meal."

"Dad?" she nervously asked.

"Hm?"

"You?," Yang nervously asked, "lost your arm?"

"Leg." he quietly said, "But luckily for me I had Summer and Raven to take care of me. Too bad that Jaune guy couldn't stick around, but he had to take care of Ruby." he said, and sighed.

"I'm glad he did." Yang said, as she stood up. Taiyang's head quickly twisted over towards her. "Taking care of Ruby is one of the only things I really want. I'm glad he's there to take care of it."

Weiss walked up to the conservatory, when she heard music coming from within. She opened the door and peered in. Aurora sat up with a start from the piano. "I'm so sorry, Miss!" she exclaimed. Weiss elegantly walked in and closed the door, walking up to her.

"I did not know you played the piano?" Weiss asked her, and Aurora shyly leaned forward before catching herself and sitting up properly.

"I'm sorry, Miss."

"Exactly what are you apologizing for?" Weiss asked her, and Aurora paused for thought. "I did ask you a question."

"Ah!, yes, Miss." Aurora replied, "I mean, I play, but not enough to make such a declaration."

"Let me hear you." Weiss said. Aurora nervously lined herself up with the piano and tentantively lowered her hands. She paused for a moment to look at Weiss before quickly looking back to the piano.

While the song was simple, she did play it well. She quickly finished and nervously looked at Weiss, seemingly expecting Weiss to be judgemental. Weiss simply smiled at her.

"Now," Weiss continued, "I did come here for a bit of practice, do you think you could accompany me?"

"Oh, no!" Aurora exclaimed, "Perish the thought, Miss! I am nowhere near good enough to accompany someone like you."

"Like me?" Weiss asked.

"Oh, I mean, you sing like an angel." Aurora said, and Weiss had an immediate flashback. It was Jaune,

"Not in the slightest, snow angel."

* * *

Weiss shook her head to clear her thoughts, when something dire occcured to her. He did not, in any way, know who she was. All of her life, boys had only cared about the perks of my last name. He honestly did not even know what they were. She shook her head to try and focus on the here and now. She felt quiet and meek, but had to stand at attention, as any Schnee did. Her body flushed every hue of blue for a moment until she exhaled and inhaled, returning her natural whiteness.

"Miss?" Aurora asked.

"Just... reminiscing..." Weiss stated. "Now, if you could produce a simple beat, it will help me keep the meter."

"Are you sure, Miss?" Aurora asked.

"Quite." Weiss augustly replied.

* * *

Yang devoured the feast before her like her life depended on it. She wasn't going to be a broken little girl any more. No, she was going to be a broken woman!

* * *

P.S. Yangst continues as per usual, with the exception of her regenerating her arm rather than getting a prosthesis. I've made the conscious decision to not rewrite every single piece of dialogue to remove reference to the prosthesis. Oobleck and Port come to visit the house. Taiyang still spars with Yang, giving her his absolutely terrible advice. The difference is she's fighting with only one arm. While this would visually be distinct, that doesn't make as much of a difference in the written medium. I also don't want to have to copy-paste Taiyang's terrible advice, but it's very indicative of his character to give this terrible advice. He's too much of a coward to understand her hyperaggressive fighting style, and his inability to understand it makes it impossible for him to give constructive advice in comparison to it.

P.P.S. Taiyang's cowardice is what stopped the rest of his team from going on suicide attacks, and as such is incredible useful in context, but dangerous in other contexts, like how he advises Yang to completely abandon everything she knows about fighting in order to adopt his own fighting style.
