Considering a MFA program? Read this first!
I'm all set to graduate from what I believe to be a stellar MFA program on January 17th. Could there really be something I didn't learn? Would prestigious, world-renown faculty really leave something out?
Recently, I came across an article from Writer’s Digest titled “What They Don’t Teach You in MFA Programs: 5 Rules for Writing Stories That Work” by Chris Mooney, a “Bestselling author and creative writing instructor.” I was obviously intrigued because I’m all set to graduate from what I believe to be a stellar MFA program on January 17th. Could there really be something I didn’t learn? Would…

Write the Year 2023—Week 48: Heading
I’m heading back to the picket line in the morning; there’s a review I should have written tonight. And one can only avoid writing a sonnet for so long. I’m thinking of a specific photo that I do not have the strength to look for tonight, but it was from one of those black-and-white photo challenges. I came across the plants in the summer this year and the years plus the season made for a stark…

Good Things Coming
Kicking my own ass in November... but somehow it worked?
As November winds down, my deadlines are fast encroaching. Despite the odds, I’m mostly on track to finish everything! Though all of the open calls I was planning on submitting to this month decided to gang up on me and all have deadlines on the 30th of November, I’ve mostly beaten them through planning. Who would have thought it? Certainly not past-Hannah. She was going to become an author……

Reflections
November is Writer’s Digest Poem-A-Day Challenge. Robert Brewer posts a prompt each day online during the month here. The author can choose to post his work on the site to let others comment or not.
The prompt for Nov. 9th was “Reflections.” My response read like this:
Reflections
A mirror never lies when the eyes of the beholder peer at wrinkles and saggy places.
Sometimes I wish the looking…

I wrote a book & now what?
I wrote a book & now what?
Now what?  I get to write it all over again. In early March I got a great rejection from a literary agent. Wait – did I say great rejection? Well yes, I did. The agent had requested the full MS of my mystery/crime novel, and after reading it, told me (after politely rejecting it): “While your story has good characters and setting, and you’ve a good voice, I found the pace to be more meditative…

Baby's First Birthday & A Foreshadowed Change
Baby’s First Birthday & A Foreshadowed Change
Effective this past Friday, March 26th, The Sword & Shield has been available to the public for a year. It is officially one year old, which hardly seems real but apparently it is so I can deal with that reality in a future therapy session. So many amazing opportunities and experiences have opened up to me courtesy of this debut novel and I would not be where I am without the love and support of…

Writer's Digest Short Story Competition
Writer’s Digest Short Story Competition
Nothing had been the same since Mary had died.  He hadn’t realized how much he’d miss her until she was gone.  No one can prepare you for the emptiness of grief until it’s all you have to fill the lonely days and longer nights.  It wasn’t just her presence that he missed.  It was how she’d buttered his toast because of his arthritis and the way her hair had looked when she woke up—like a gale had…

How to Start a New Writing Project
I'm feeling restless? Is it because Spring is almost here?
I’m feeling restless. Maybe my transitory lifestyle for the vast majority of the last two years has made a permanent alteration to my brain chemistry. But as I’m too broke to travel at the moment, I think I’m ready for my next writing project. I have a couple of ideas percolating, so as I try to narrow it down to a single focus, I thought I’d share some great tips on getting started that I found…
