Hi, Tumblr! It’s been a loooongbutt time since I’ve tried my hand at making a direct post and since I can’t share automatically from Instagram, I’ll see if I can do it directly. The LOTR Éowyn x Gríma Wormtongue pairing has captivated me, and my "the school year has ended, so it's time to draw a picture that absolutely no one asked for" gift to myself this time was this ship. It took a long time to complete as other things were vying for my attention (still are), but it's done! Painted in ink and coffeewash with a small splash of blue, which is hardly noticeable in this scan.

This scene always hits me hard.
Halbrand (aka Sauron, aka Mairon) is genuinely crying in this scene when he remembers Morgoth no longer having control over him. Morgoth was hated by not just the orcs he enslaved, but also by Sauron (the maiar formerly known as Mairon) whom he corrupted. This is a scene where Sauron remembers, for a moment, back to when he wasn't evil -- back to a time before he willingly became Morgoth's subordinate. This moment shows genuine remorse for having made a terrible choice.
As a comparison... Peter Jackson showed Wormtongue, of all characters, feeling that same remorse. Grima was also once "a man of Rohan", but became corrupted by Saruman (who was corrupted by Sauron).
It's small details like these that make for good character depth. Well written villains aren't your typical melodramatic bad guy, being evil just because "well... someone has to be evil".
Well written villains make us feel pity on them.
And in the words of Gandalf...

I cannot believe that Gandalf said "A man may love you and yet not love Wormtongue" with a straight face.

Funny idea: Wormtongue is a swear word (bonus points if it is a bad one) and Alderstar had to try very very hard to keep a straight face when Worm got his full name
Plus the fact that Worm consciously chose a swear word as his name

In Dwimordene, in Lórien
Seldom have walked the feet of Men,
Few mortal eyes have seen the light
That lies there ever, long and bright.
Galadriel! Galadriel!
Clear is the water of your well;
White is the star in your white hand;
Unmarred, unstained is leaf and land
In Dwimordene, in Lórien
More fair than thoughts of Mortal Men.
- Gandalf’s song of Galadriel, following Grima Wormtongue’s accusations of his dealings with the “Sorceress of the Great Wood” due to their grey cloaks. The song would be followed by Gandalf purging Meduseld of Saruman’s influence. Two Towers, The King Of The Golden Hall.

Gríma Wormtongue dancing. I mean, does he? I am in two minds about this. I think I have it figured out, but then the snakeboy always has a mind of his own.

This scene was a great reveal, the first time Chucky spoke as Charles Lee Ray, but my favorite part will always be Brad Dourif's choice of words. As much as I appreciate what they attempted in the newer Child's Play, there's no replacing Brad Dourif. The man is so underappreciated.

Wormtongue. Art by Matt Hughes, from Mother Mort's Carnival of Souls.
Wormtongue is the story we were all told as children to scare us into behaving better. He was a naughty child, a bully, a brat. He stole, he lied and he hurt others and then showed no remorse. Like all naughty children in such stories, he received a harsh punishment, doomed to remain a crow for the rest of his days, desperate to warn others away from the carnival but unable to utter anything but his new name. This card is a warning or an alert and represents an upcoming change, whether negative or positive. This card also represents past mistakes and regrets and the need to reflect on them and learn and grow from them.
