This angered your father more and instead of taking it out on Alastor or your mother he took it out on you and your siblings. Atticus tried to protect all of you.
One day your father and Atticus got into a really bad fight and your brother was shot. He didn't make it.
It was around the same time when a horrid smell started coming from Alma's room. Your parents said she caught a fever and no one noticed but you didn't believe them anymore.
From then on you started distancing yourself from your family and growing closer to Alastor.

You try not to make it a habit of picking up bar shifts during the week. Not only is it almost always slow, and you barely make any money, but it's hard to go from teaching for eight hours directly to another job. You'd much rather be at home, grading or doing something for yourself for the first time in weeks. But you couldn't say no when Katie called you, almost in tears, begging you to take her shift so she could deal with a burst pipe in her house. You don't regret doing her a favor, but you do regret other things as you stand behind the mostly empty bar as whatever game is happening plays on the screen above your head. You think it's a UT game. Or maybe A&M. Or any of the other SEC Texas schools with an absurd football budget. 
You're basically yawning your way through your shift and working through your newest painting in your head, trying and failing to not think about school until absolutely necessary. Principal Martinez is cracking down on the stupid minutiae the school board demands of its teachers, and you spent most of your afternoon writing student objectives on the board. On top of that, your art club kids have been begging you to plan a field trip to the local art museum for weeks. You finally relented, but the paperwork is mind-numbing and requires much more work than you thought. Between working, making art, and trying to live your life, you barely have time. 
Another reason you hate working weekdays is the creepy regulars. Normally, you can ignore them on a busy Saturday night, but it's harder when it's as dead as it is. You have no idea how Katie deals with them on a regular basis. It started with a guy at the bar, you think his name is Steve, asking you progressively invasive questions. "How old are you?" "You gotta boyfriend?" "What time do you get off?" One right after each other, even after you made it clear you're not interested. Fake laughing and making excuses to run to the back or change a keg don't throw him off. 
"Keep it up, and I'll cut you off." You finally threaten after he asks you why you're being a bitch. You roll your eyes when the bell above the door rings, probably admitting yet another asshole who's gonna make your night hell. When you turn toward the door, the words leave you before you can stop them. "You've gotta be fucking kidding me."
"Now, is that any way to greet your customers?" Joel chuckles, and you sigh as he sits down in front of you. Thankfully, his brother is not in tow, and you can save yourself a little embarrassment. "I didn't know you worked here."
"I don't," you say. "Whatcha drinkin'?" 
"Looks like you're workin' to me." He smirks and you shoot him a look.
"You wanna free drink or not?" 
"Shiner," he answers quickly. You hum in acknowledgment, not even bothering with the POS system and going right to the fridge to pull a bottle out for him. You pop the cap off and place a napkin under the beer before sliding it to him. "Are you bribin' me?"
"You've gotta be faster with your questions, Miller. You've already accepted it. Might as well enjoy." You say, and he laughs. 
"Well, alright, then," he says, raising his beer to you before taking a quick sip. "So, what's this, then? You moonlightin' as a bartender?" He asks, and you fight yourself on how to answer. What if word gets back to parents? Administration? They couldn't reprimand you for that, right? You know plenty of other teachers with second jobs, so it can't be that taboo. Still, you're hesitant to open up to Joel. Out of all the people who could've walked into your bar tonight, it had to be him.
"Something like that." You settle on, wiping a sticky spot on the bar to avoid his gaze. If he feels anything negative about you having a second job, his face doesn't show it. He has a soft smile on his lips and a slight sunburn across his nose, highlighting the freckles living there that previously went unnoticed. You want to tease him about not wearing sunscreen, but the joke dies in your throat when he rests his elbows on your bar, showing off those stupid biceps you can't not look at. He catches your eyes lingering near the short sleeve of his shirt and opens his mouth like he's going to say something, but a grating voice from the other side of the bar cuts him off.
"Excuse me, sweetheart! You've got other patrons over here!" Steve yells, and you feel your eye twitch at his attitude. Joel notices.
"What's wrong with him?" He asks quietly, leaning forward over the bar to get closer to you. Looking into his brown eyes and confused expression, an idea forms.
"Pretend you know me." You say, and his eyebrows knit together, every emotion visible on his face. 
"I do know you."
"No, I mean," you sigh. "That guy over there is a regular on Wednesdays, and the girl who usually works is married, so he doesn't try anything with her, but I won't give him my number, and he's making me fucking miserable. So, just... pretend to know me." Joel is bigger than Steve. Much bigger. Probably a whole head taller and much broader than the man on the other side of the bar. One word from Joel, and he might actually shut up or, better yet, leave altogether so you can finish your day without any more hiccups.
"Okay," Joel agrees, and you reflexively reach out to touch his thick forearm and squeeze. You don't even realize you did it until he smiles like he won a staring contest or something.
"Thank you," you say before turning and bracing yourself to deal with Steve. "What can I do for you, sir?" You ask, but before you can even finish your sentence, he holds up his empty beer bottle and waves it in front of your face like you're stupid. 
"Another beer." He says, and you bite your tongue. 
"You got it."
"Finally," he groans. "You'd think for such an easy fuckin' job, you'd be better at it." 
"What the fuck is your problem?" You ask, refusing to move from your spot to get him his beer, and he scoffs.
"My problem is that you're bein' a fuckin' bitch and ignorin' me when I didn't do nothin' wrong." He's slurring his words together at this point, and you wordlessly go to the POS system to close his tab and send him on his way. "Hey, I'm talkin' to you!" He yells after you.
"Hey, man, why don't you leave her alone? She's just tryna do her job." Joel speaks up from the other side of the bar, and Steve straightens up in his seat as he assesses Joel. 
"This isn't any of your fuckin' business. Stay out of it."
"It's my business now. That's no way to speak to a lady. I think you owe her a mighty big apology." 
"I don't owe her shit," he spits, and you look over to see Joel setting his jaw and squaring his shoulders. "Why's this even matter to you, big shot?"
"That's my fuckin' wife you're mouthin' off to," Joel says without hesitation, and you quickly school your expression. Wife? You asked him to play along, but you didn't think he'd say that. "So, if you wanna keep the rest of your teeth, I suggest you apologize to her, leave her a nice, big tip for dealin' with your sorry ass, and get yourself a ride home." 
Steve is silent as you take the empty bottle away from him— just in case things get really ugly— and slide him his card and bill. He eyes Joel carefully for a few tense seconds before picking up a pen, signing his check, and leaving without another word. The second he's out the door, you feel a weight lift off your shoulders and sigh at the relief. You scrub a hand down your face and look over at Joel.
"You okay?" He asks gently like you're a spooked horse, and you nod. You take a few minutes to get yourself together, putting in Steve's 30% tip and cleaning off the empty bar before returning to Joel. "What?" He asks when he catches you smirking.
"At least buy a girl dinner before you call me your wife." You say, and he laughs, shaking his head. 
"You said the other girl is married. I just took it and ran," he says. "And I already tried to take you to dinner, but somebody said no." 
"School regulation says it's unethical." 
"Well, we're not at school now, and you're certainly not a teacher right now." He says smoothly, vaguely gesturing to your all-black outfit, and you give him a look. "What time d'you get off?"
"You're gonna get me in trouble." You whisper, and he leans forward across the bar. 
"All I did was ask you a question." He whispers back, playfully mocking you. It could be the smile on his face, the relaxed humor behind his eyes, or the fact that he stood up for you because you asked him to, but you glance between him and the clock and take a deep breath. 
"I get off at 12. Unless it stays dead like this, then I'm closing early," you say, and his smile grows. "But this is not a date." 
"'Course not." He chuckles, and you raise your eyebrows at him. 
"I'm serious. I need you to say it's not a date, so I know you won't come after me if your kid fails my class." 
"Is my kid failing your class?"
"No, she's amazing. But for my own mental well-being, I need you to say that this is not a date." You say, and he grabs your wrist to stop your anxious wringing. 
"Let me buy you a drink. That's it. Nothin' more," he says, squeezing you. "This ain't a date." 
"Thank you." You sigh, and he nods. 
You spend an hour or two idling between conversations with Joel and trying to look busy for any manager who might care enough to check the cameras. You're pretty much done with all your closing duties by 10:00, and you wait until it's been a full hour since anyone else came in to flip the closed sign and do a few last-minute things. When the bar is completely clean, empty, and ready for the next shift, you slink back behind it to make yourself and Joel a drink before sitting beside him. 
"You feelin' proud of yourself for getting us here?" You ask as you clink your glass against his and take a sip. 
"Yeah, I've got the prettiest girl in the whole place sittin' by me," he says, and before you can even scold him, he throws his hands up. "Not a date." 
"Not a date." You repeat.
"Still true, though."
"Don't make me regret saying yes to you, Mr. Miller." You say, and he gives you a look. You like teasing him, especially since you can always see exactly how he's feeling. He's not particularly subtle, contrary to what you're sure others think about him. 
"How many times do I have to tell you to call me Joel?" 
"As many times as it takes, I guess," you shrug. "You also clearly have an aversion to being called Mr. Miller."
"My dad was Mr. Miller." He says, and you roll your eyes, groaning and half-folding in on yourself dramatically. 
"Oh, my God, do you know how many men have said that to me since I've become a teacher?"
"Well, it's true!" He says. "Are you sayin' other people are tryna tell my wife to call ‘em by their first names?" He asks, and you laugh. 
"Believe it or not, you're not the first single parent to ask me out." 
"Am I the first one you said yes to?" 
"So far." 
"So far?" He asks, raising his eyebrows, and you hum. "I'll take it." 
Unsurprisingly, Joel is really easy to talk to. He asks questions about your life outside of work, where you went to school, and what made you want to be a teacher. You ask him about his job and family and, somehow, end up talking about the latest cheesy action film he's seen. When both your drinks are empty, the glasses sit there, the ice slowly melting as you talk into the night. Every time a hint of anxiety creeps up your spine, he makes you laugh or tells you an interesting story from his past and distracts you from it. You lose hours sitting there, and you don't even realize it until your phone pings you with a reminder, and you suddenly see it's past midnight.
"Oh, shit," you mumble, showing Joel the time. "I gotta lock up."
"And you have school tomorrow." He says, and you groan as you stand and grab your glasses. 
"Don't remind me. I've got like five million things waiting to get done there." You say. He watches you step behind the bar, leave them in the sink for the opener to find, and no doubt send a catty message in the group chat asking who closed the night before. His eyes don't leave you even when you reach up and grab your bag, your sleeve falling down just enough to reveal a nasty bruise.
"Woah, that looks like it hurt," he says, gesturing to your arm. "How'd you get that?"
"Promise you won't laugh." Your response does nothing to clear up his confusion, but he raises his right hand and makes a cross over his heart.
"I promise." His tone is gentle and even, but you're still hesitant to actually admit it.
"I fell off a table." 
"I told you!"
"Hey!" You scold. "You promised you'd be cool about it!"
"I promised not to laugh." He says, and you roll your eyes. "They still haven't come to fix it for ya?"
"Would I be climbing on tables if they did?"
"Fair enough," he shrugs. You find the bar keys at the bottom of your purse and walk over to where he's still sitting, your hand resting on the back of your chair. He shifts forward until he can catch the edge of your sleeve and roll it up to see the bruise in all her glory. His fingers are warm, and his touch light as he traces the edge of it, not firm enough to make it ache but enough that you feel the pads of his fingers. You freeze like your stillness will be enough for the feather-light touches to continue, your eyes meeting for a split second. He clears his throat and rolls your sleeve back down for you, drawing his hand back. "Tell you what," he says. "I gotta buddy who gets me a good deal on some spare parts. Let me see if I can track down the part you need, and I'll come fix it myself. Free of charge."
"You don't have to do that." 
"And let my wife fall off tables?" He asks, a smirk pulling on his lips, and you shake your head. "It's the least I can do for the free drinks and, ya know, teachin' my kid." 
"Fine, but don't make it a thing. The maintenance people already don't like me. I can't imagine seeking outside help will make them like me." 
"I won't make it a thing," he promises, leaning back in his chair as his eyes travel up and down your body. He sighs heavily and sucks his teeth like you're suddenly too much, and you smile. "It's a damn shame this wasn't a date."
"What'd you do if it was?" The question borders on dangerous, but you can't take it back now that you've said it. It seems to have piqued Joel's interest, too, because he raises his eyebrows at you.
"You really wanna know?" He asks, and you nod.
"I really wanna know," you say. "How does Joel Miller end a successful date?" He gets a little bashful at the question, a blush creeping up his neck, and you knock his knee with yours to get his attention. "C'mon, don't get shy on me now."
"Alright, alright," he grumbles. "If this were a date, and we were gettin' ready to go out separate ways, I'd walk you out to your car, open the door for ya 'cause a lady should never open her own doors," his voice is slow and low, and he watches your face as he speaks. "And I'd kiss you. Nice and slow so I don't scare ya off or anythin'. I might put a hand on your waist or bite that pretty lip or somethin'. And right when I can feel you wantin' a little more, gettin' a little desperate, I'd stop, say goodnight, and walk back to my truck." His words have a devastating effect on you, and you can't look away from him. The heat rolling off him in waves makes you too warm and flustered. His gaze flicks from your eyes to your lips, his own tongue darting out to wet his plump bottom lip, and you have half a mind to think he's looking at you like he wants to eat you alive. You have half a mind to let him. 
"You're right," you finally breathe. "It's a shame this isn't a date." He nods and stands, his broad chest grazing yours as you look up at him. You're not a science teacher by any means. If you were, you might be able to explain the magnetism you feel toward Joel or what stupid chemical in your brain makes you wonder what tricks he keeps up his sleeve. But you're not. You're an art teacher. So, the only thing you can focus on is the deep brown of his irises and the heavy lashes and crow's feet that frame his eyes. And the swoop of his salt and pepper curls, the tint of his slightly pink forehead and strong nose. You want to capture his image in the dim lighting of the bar, but you settle for committing it to memory to scribble in the margins of your notebook for the rest of the week. Why couldn't you have been a science teacher?
Neither of you says anything as he finally steps away, giving you the space to turn off the last of the bar lights and push through the haze he created in your mind. He lingers by the door and opens it for you when you go to the front and step into the humid Austin night. You lock the doors and give him a small smile when you turn around to see him rocking back and forth on the balls of his feet. 
Then, just as he said, he walks you to your car and opens the driver's side door for you. His truck, the only other car in the parking lot, is parked a few spaces away from yours. It would've been so much easier to just ignore you, get in his car, and drive away, but here he is, being the gentleman he's always been toward you. You step into the space created by the open door and throw your bag in the passenger seat, but don't get in the car. Not yet. He sighs heavily, like he's in physical pain, when you meet his eyes again, and his hand flexes around the edge of your car door. 
"Thanks for my not date." You mumble, and he nods. You're close (and weak) enough that brushing his lips would just take a strong breeze. It freaks you out how okay you are with the idea of "accidentally" kissing Joel Miller. You should be panicking. Alarm bells should be sounding in your head, but the only thing filling the cavernous space is the echo of his voice explaining what he'd do if this were a date. Idiot.
He leans on your door a little more, and your heart quickens, thinking he might actually be the one to make the move. His head ducks just a little, and you get a strong whiff of his cologne, your eyes fluttering shut at the scent. Your throat is suddenly dry, and you're all but pushing up on your toes when he swerves past your lips and presses a chaste, firm kiss to your cheek. His beard scratches your soft skin pleasantly, and you keep your eyes closed until he pulls away, looking like he just won a prize.
"Get home safe." He says as he steps back, still holding your door open. You sigh and fight a smile as you look at him— cocky, vindicated, and knowing exactly what he just did. 
"Goodnight, Joel." You manage to get out before sitting down and letting him gently shut the door for you. You wait until he gets in his truck to roll your window down and shout his name until he does the same. "I'm gonna get you back for that."
"Oh, I'm countin' on it, darlin'."

Winter 2024
You watched as Matt helped untie your little brother’s shoes and unzip his jacket, the two of them coming back in from playing outside. You had stayed inside on the couch, keeping warm while you worked on your English essay, watching them from the living room window. A storm hit soon after New Year’s leaving Boston in a blanket of fresh white snow.
He sets his shoes and jacket down, leading him to the kitchen to make him a cup of juice. Your brother adored Matt, there was no denying he was a great babysitter. A couple years ago, your mom started working out of town every other weekend, leaving you home alone to take care of your brother since your dad left when you were a little girl. 
Your mom had always been a strict parent, so naturally she didn’t trust you to be by yourself the whole weekend given the fact you were only 16 at the time. So, she asked one of her friend’s sons to help, who happened to be Matt Sturniolo.
Matt was trusted by mostly everyone, and your mom had known his mom since high school, so she had no problem with him being at your house. You, however, were extremely against this idea. You and Matt had never gotten along no matter how much you tried. You had known him since elementary school and from the moment you met, he always had an attitude towards you for some reason. Being that you were so stubborn, you didn’t back down from his sourness, and challenged him every chance you got.
He was a couple years ahead of you in school and always brought up the fact that because he was older, that somehow made him better than you. You refused to acknowledge that, butting heads with him constantly. It didn’t help that some of your friends were his friends and each time you guys were around each other, it was a constant competition. Who was better at bowling, who got first place in Mario Kart, who had the best golf swing. It annoyed your friends to no end.
When you were a sophomore, Matt would come over the weekends your mom worked out of town. He stayed during the majority of the day, taking care of your little brother. This also gave you the freedom to attend many of the extracurricular activities you were involved in. You took pride in being the top of your class and captain of the dance team. Matt endlessly teased you about it, calling you a “try hard” and “nerd”.
The time you did spend at home when Matt was there, you tried to avoid arguing with him around your brother. The three of you often went to the park, or got ice cream, never running out of ways to entertain him. The more time you had spent around Matt, it was hard not to develop a little crush. You would never admit it, but you admired the sweet side of him. He was good at taking care of your brother.
And he subtly started to flirt with you, teasing you over silly things, and checking you out when you weren’t looking. There was no doubt he found you attractive. But you frustrated him to no end, given the fact that you were so stubborn and weren’t afraid to voice your opinion when you disagreed with him on something. Matt liked to be in control, but you did as well. Still, he admired how hard working you were and your sensitive nature.
It didn’t take long before raging teenage hormones created sexual tension between you two. The summer before your junior year, stolen glances and accidental touches fueled the fire that had been growing over the years. One night when you were both alone, watching a movie after your brother had fallen asleep, Matt finally made a move on you. He would usually leave at nighttime, going back home to sleep so he could come back the next day and help you. But he decided to stay and finish the movie with you.
It had been a particularly good Saturday, and you had looked especially pretty that day. He couldn’t stop staring at you and when you asked him what he was looking at, he pressed his lips to yours, igniting a flame in you that you just couldn’t put out.
From that night on, you two snuck around every chance you got, whenever your brother wasn’t around or asleep, almost every weekend up until Matt graduated.
Making out on the couch until his hands found his way into your shorts and under your shirt, eliciting sweet moans from you while he thrust his fingers deep inside you. Now it was early January, and you were on winter break. You had come back home to visit and spent some time with your mom before she left on her work trip. Matt came over to help with your brother of course and this was the first time you had seen him since you graduated high school almost a year ago. He was now 20 years old, had let his beard grow out a little, and gotten several tattoos on his left arm.
Was it possible for him to get even more attractive than he already was back then? But you promised yourself you wouldn’t give into your past desires. You had too much to focus on and even though you were on break, you had an important English essay to finish. Besides, Matt had the worst attitude ever as soon as he saw you, making it easier for you to avoid him.
He was currently burning a hole into you with his pointed looks, glaring at you from across the room as your brother sat next to him, playing with his action figures.
You looked up at him from your computer, returning his dirty look. “Can I help you with something, Matthew?” You asked, knowing he hated it whenever you used his full name.
“Aren’t you supposed to be on break? Don’t you do anything for fun?” He said, referring to the fact that you had been typing away on your computer for the last hour.
You rolled your eyes, focusing your attention back on the computer. “Aren’t you supposed to mind your own business?” You responded.
He scoffed, running a hand through his hair. “I don’t really care what you do. I’m just tired of listening to your incessant typing.” He said with annoyance.
You ignored him, continuing to work on your essay while he continued to stare at you. You tried to focus but his piercing gaze distracted you. He sighed loudly and finally you slammed your computer shut, anger bubbling inside you.
“Fine. It’s not like I can focus with you acting like that anyway.” You snap, standing up to walk to the kitchen and get a glass of water.
To your annoyance, he follows you, leaning against the counter as you fill the glass and take a few sips. “Did you miss me, angel?” He says and you almost choke on the water, laughing as you set the glass down. “Don’t be ridiculous.” You reply, turning to face him. His eyes travel up and down your body, no shame in the way he checks you out.
“You still look hot. Brings back memories of when I had you all to myself-“He starts, a mischievous grin appearing on his face. You interrupt him though, grabbing his jaw a little roughly, smushing his lip together to prevent him from continuing whatever dirty thoughts he was going to say.
“Let’s get one thing clear, Matt. I came home to spend time with my brother, not to be bothered by you. Whatever you think we had in the past, you can forget about it. That will never be happening again.” You say sternly and let go of his face. He rubs his jaw and a dark look forms in his eyes as he leans down to whisper in your ear. “If you ever fucking grab me like that again, I’ll make sure you remember who’s really in control here. Don’t make me mad, Y/N.”

Ada's eyes locked with his (e/c) ones and he saw her smirk as the distance between them shortened with every step they took. (M/n) saw her free hand reaching up, holding Leon's face before the blond could see him across from them, and she leaned closer to kiss him. And of course Leon returned her kiss.
(M/n) rolled his eyes and turned around, walking away from the place and staying hidden behind a wall. It hurt to know that Leon loved Ada, even if it was in a sick and twisted way despite everything that happened between them. In the end, Leon always came back to him, and he had that going for him.

ME AND MY FAMILY have been coming to cousins since i was a baby, since before i was born.

the beach house felt magical, every summer, i couldn't wait to return each summer.

There were two prevailing theories on when the Ghostface killings first started: Either with the murder of Shauna's deadbeat father a year ago, or with the recent double murder of Mari's ex-boyfriend and his girlfriend-cousin. You personally believed in the latter, as your girlfriend Shauna insisted that Ben Scott was the true killer of her father. 
You still remember the day it happened well. Shauna was truly devastated by the news, but not nearly as devastated as she would be if it happened to her mother instead. You remember all too well the day her father had walked out on her, and you think she cried harder then than at the sight of her fathers body. She’d unfortunately been the one to find him after dropping by at his house to presumably yell at him; He’d forgotten that he was supposed to come see her once again, and she was getting tired of getting his excuses the next day. She’d arrived just in time to see the flash of Ben’s iconic jacket as he rushed away from the scene. Privately you thought her father deserved what he got, but you comforted Shauna all the same.
The original murders had been the closest one to your friend group until last night, with the murder of Travis Martinez. You didn’t know him all that well, by reputation more than anything, but it still hit you hard. This was a kid that you knew, that all of you saw on at least a weekly basis. Coach Martinez would be out of school indefinitely, and as much as you felt for him it left the rest of you scrambling to find a soccer coach with one grieving and the other doing 20 to life. Jackie was particularly upset about it being the captain.
“I just don’t see how we’re supposed to find someone to replace him at such a short notice.” Jackie complains, slipping into the seat across from Shauna. Nat scoffs as she looks over to glare at Jackie.
“Yeah, Jackie. I’m sure Coach is real concerned about soccer right now.” She says derisively. “It’s not like his son was just brutally murdered or anything.” Nat’s eyes are hard and piercing, and even you have to look away. Jackie shrinks in on herself in shame, crossing her arms defensively across her chest as she stares down at the table.
“I wasn’t trying to,” She starts, but is interrupted by Shauna.
“I just think it’s funny.” Shauna says, in that voice of hers you knew meant trouble. You lace your and Shauna’s fingers together in case she was planning on jumping the table and brace for impact. “That Travis seems to have died so horribly just after asking you out a few weeks ago.” She finishes. You wince. Nat had shot him down brutally in front of half the school, actually laughing in his face. It was a pretty sore spot between them, but mostly because Nat had seriously considered him to be one of her friends.
Nat’s face goes cold as she slams her hands down on the table and stands up so hard the chair goes clattering to the floor behind her. “Asshole.” She spits out, turning away and storming away from the table. The cafeteria goes quiet as everyone turns to watch her walk out. As soon as the door to the cafeteria slams shut the whispering starts as everyone points over at her chair and makes their own assumptions of what happened. Nat and Travis’s fight had gone down in front of the entire school, and you knew just as well as Shauna did what conclusions everyone had been drawing from that. It’s why you had invited Nat to sit with you in the first place, as she usually skipped lunch to smoke behind the bleachers. You wanted her to know that you supported her.
The rest of you sit in wide eyed silence until you exhale loudly and whisper, “Jesus, Shauna.” Shauna tenses next to you and gives you a stiff glare. You return her look for a long moment until she softens against you, giving your hand a quick squeeze in apology.
“Sorry.” She murmurs quietly into your ear. “I’ll talk to her later, promise.” You don’t think she’ll be able to find Nat until Nat wants to be found, but you appreciate the promise nonetheless. 
“I just don’t get what her deal is.” Jackie says, much more relaxed now that Nat had left.
You give her a look of disbelief. “Jackie, her friend just died.” You say.
“It’s not like we killed him.” She defends guiltily. You sigh. You knew that Jackie meant well, but she really had a tendency to focus on whatever affected her the most. She didn’t mean to sound so insensitive in front of Nat, but just didn’t think it through before she said it. 
“What did the principal say about getting a new coach, anyways?” You ask, deciding to let her off the hook for now. Jackie and Shauna both seem grateful for the change in conversation topic as Jackie begins to animatedly describe her meeting.
You and Shauna share an amused look as Jeff drones on. “-it's obvious where the connection is.”
“Is it?” Shauna asks dryly. Jeff beams at the slightest amount of attention from Shauna as he turns to talk to her directly. 
“Well obviously it has to be someone connected to Natalie Scatorccio or Mari…” He pauses and turns back to Jackie,” What’s Mari's last name?”
Jackie's eyebrows furrow in confusion as she thinks about it. She looks over at you and Shauna but the two of you sure as hell don't know. “That's not important, Jeff.” She says finally, trying to save face. “Just because they know someone who died doesn't mean they know the killer. I don't think any of us are killers.”
“Yeah, but don't they always say serial killers hide as normal people?” Shauna asks. Jackie and Jeff both give her considering looks as they mull over the statement. Your girlfriend’s edgy attitude was going to get her thrown in jail. You elbow her in the side and she grunts in pain, plastering a smile on her face at your significant look. 
“Definitely not one of us, though.” She says, looking over at you for approval. Oh my god. Somehow that was even worse than before. Jackie looks slightly nervous now as she looks at Shauna, knowing what she was capable of better than almost anyone. 
“Of course it's not one of us. We were watching a movie at Jackie's house last night, remember? We both fell asleep like ten minutes.” You remind Jackie, relaxing at the look of realization on her face. You and Jackie share a concerned look as she comes to the same conclusion about Shauna's consistently morbid attitude as you. 
“Unless it was all three of you.” Jeff jokes, breaking the tension between the two of you immediately. You roll your eyes and Shauna scoffs. The two of you walk off to the comfortingly familiar sound of Jackie berating Jeff for being an idiot. 
“What the hell was that for?” Shauna asks the second you are out of earshot, rubbing at the side of her stomach soothingly. You shoot her s slightly concerned look as you had truly just meant to get her attention, but you can tell by the slight quirk of her lips that she's mostly teasing. 
“Seriously, Shauna?” You ask. She looks honestly confused so you continue. “Serial Killers could be anyone, really?”
She holds her hands out placatingly. “It's true.” She defends. 
“True or not, you can't just say that Shauna. Especially when.” You cut yourself off as you bite at your lip. You sigh. “You need to be careful.”
“Especially when, what?” Shauna asks slowly. You shoot her a slightly guilty look as you shake your head and keep walking. She follows you step for step to her car, not letting up on her questioning as you close the door behind you. 
“Shauna, people think it's you.” You confess finally, just wanting the conversation to end. 
“What?” She asks in utter disbelief. You don't deny the slight relief her disbelief gives you. You didn't truly believe your girlfriend to be capable of such a thing; Well, that wasn't quite true. You believed her to be capable of murder, but you had hoped she wasn't involved in these specifically. 
“They don't have any proof. It's just.” You pause as you try to think of a good way to explain it, but find none. “You're violent, Shauna. You broke Justin's nose at a party last week.” She scoffs. 
“He called you a-” She starts, but stops as you place a calming hand on her arm. 
“I know, Shauna. I know. It just doesn't look good with everything happening right now. I know you didn't mean the serial killer thing either, but you need to watch what you say right now.” You say. She softens at the obvious look of concern on your face, raising her hands to bury her face in them. 
She groans in frustration and you make quiet shushing noises as you move her hands away from her face. You lean forward and press a gentle kiss against her lips. “Hey.” You soothe. “It'll be fine. No one who knows you thinks you did it, okay? Who cares what they think.”
“The police.” She says wryly, but seems to accept the comfort. She smiles over at you and squeezes your hand gently. “Love you.” She says. 
You smile back. “Love you too.”
“-and you're sure?” Shauna asks again. You roll your eyes as you wrap your arms around the back of Shauna's neck and rest your head against her shoulder. She wraps her arms around your waist and pulls you tightly against her. You can't help but squeal as she lifts you slightly off your feet, arms clinging tightly to her. 
“Shauna!” You chide, and she laughs as she sets you back down. You smack her lightly on the shoulder as you push yourself away from her. “Brute.” You murmur playfully. 
“Brute?” She asks in disbelief. You shrug. If the shoe fits. Her easy grin falls off her face as she gets more serious. You cut her off before she can ask one more time. 
“Yes, Shauna. I'm sure that I'll manage to not get brutally murdered in the 20 minutes it'll take you to go get Jackie and drive back to your house.” You say. You'd run a little late getting over to Shauna's house and still had to finish getting ready. You weren't sure why Lottie Matthews was still throwing a party three days after your classmate was murdered, but Jackie had insisted that you all go. 
Unfortunately, when it came to your girlfriend it seemed that Jackie got most things she insisted upon. That wasn't entirely fair, you'd readily acknowledge, but you couldn't help but resent her for the hold that Jackie didn't even know she had over Shauna. This was made even more difficult by your own friendship with Jackie. You'd been friends with the two of them for a long time, but you didn't know anyone who knew someone quite as long as Jackie and Shauna did. 
Shauna nods unsurely as she grabs her car keys off the table. She presses a quick kiss against your lips before heading out the door. You breathe out slowly as you try to collect your thoughts. You turn to get the clothes in your bag but pause as the thought strikes you. You grin as you head off to Shauna’s clothes rack instead now that she wasn’t here to stop you; Not that she usually would, but it was much more fun this way.
You’re adjusting the length of the sleeves on Shauna’s favorite flannel when you hear a knock on the door. You roll your eyes as you head down the stairs to answer it, not putting too much thought into why Shauna would knock on the door at her own house. She knocks again as you finally set foot on the ground floor. “She acts like she doesn’t live in the fucking attic.” You mutter as you throw open the door without looking. You peer at the empty doorway curiously, slowly leaning out the door to look around the front of the house. 
You sigh as you lean against the doorway. “I know that was you, Jackie!” You call out. “You’re the only one I know that would think ding-dong ditching is funny.” You wait another minute or so as you look around before trying to slam the door shut; Trying, being the key word, as the door catches on someone's foot. You wince slightly, realizing how hard you’d shut the door, until you catch a glimpse of who the foot’s attached to. Your eyes widen in horror as wide soulless eyes stare back at you from a hauntingly familiar white mask. You scream in utter terror, louder than you’d ever previously thought yourself capable of.
You desperately try to force them back out the door, but whoever’s there is much stronger than you are. Your socked feet slide back against the hardwood floor as you fruitlessly try to get some kind of friction. You jump back entirely as they slip a large hunting knife through the crack of the door and start blindly swiping it. They stumble forward to their knees as the door swings open, obviously not prepared for the resistance to completely disappear and you take the chance to sprint back up the stairs.
You hesitate at the top of the stairs as you hear the loud sound of footsteps coming from the bottom of them. You quickly reach towards the hallway table to grab the lamp sitting there. You whirl around and absolutely chuck the thing at them, pausing to watch in satisfaction as it hits them dead on in the center of their face and sends them falling back down the stairs. You run the rest of the way to Shauna’s room, slamming the door shut as you propped a chair underneath the handle. Her room never had a lock so she tended to just throw the chair in front of it when she wanted people out.
You knew more than anyone how sturdy that chair could be but you knew it wouldn’t keep them out forever. You desperately went diving for the phone sitting on her nightstand. You buried your head in your knees and sobbed when you lifted the phone off the receiver to realize that the phone line had been cut. The loud sounds of the door being hit fill the room and you frantically search for something to defend yourself with. From your position on the floor you can see the end of Shauna’s old hockey stick peeking out from underneath the bed. You quickly crawl across the floor and grab it, rising back to your feet. You stand in the middle of the room holding it over your shoulder knowing that your only hope was to get to them before they got to you.
As they finally manage to break the door down you ready the stick and take a quick swing with all your might. You manage to get a good hit, but aren’t able to see where as you jump back with a painful cry as they manage to get a good swipe at your arm in return. You don’t bother to look as you painfully raise the hockey stick again, but before either of you has a chance to make another attack the loud sound of sirens rushes down the street. You watch carefully as their mask flickers back and forth from red to blue as the lights from the street fill the room. They slowly raise the knife to point it at you, before turning around and sprinting out of the house. 
All of the adrenaline escapes your body as you fall to your knees, still clutching desperately onto the hockey stick and just cry hysterically until the police officer carefully steps through the destroyed door and finally finds you. You stare up at him, unable to stop your sobs as the reality of the situation has finally struck you.  He slowly lowers the gun he has pointed at you and slips it into his holster. “We have an ambulance outside.” He says.
You give him a wild look, not quite cognizant enough at the moment to understand why that would matter to you. “Your arm.” He says slowly, as if talking to a wounded animal. You're reminded of your wound by the sudden throb of pain it emits. You stare at it blankly for a long moment before looking up at the officer and nodding. 
“Yes.” You mutter distractedly. You finally manage to unclench your fingers from the wooden stick, leaving it to clatter against the ground. You rest your hands on your thighs as you try to catch your breath. You manage to force yourself to your feet and stumble towards him and out of the house. As you step out the door you're nearly blinded by the sheer amount of red and blue lights flickering at you. The officer places a hand on your shoulder to lead you to the ambulance. You nearly swing on him reflexively but manage to catch yourself at the last moment. You quietly let him lead you over to the ambulance even as you clearly resent the hand he’s placed on your shoulder.
You stare off into the distance as the emt bandages up your arm, and even manage to smile wryly when he says that you were pretty lucky with the placement: it did no major damage after all, mostly superficial. Lucky. You think, rolling your eyes at the thought. You didn’t feel particularly lucky right now. 
“Hey.” You hear a familiar voice say. You look up quickly, eyes widening at the sight. 
“Van!” You cry out, rushing forward to wrap your arms tightly around her. She reciprocates the motion, pulling you even closer as you start sobbing again. She makes quiet comforting noises as she rubs her hand in circles across your back. 
You hadn’t seen Van all that much since you were a kid, but she was always your favorite babysitter. It was never that formal of an arrangement, your parents had just paid her to watch you for a couple hours every once in a while, but watching horror movies with her on Friday nights had been a highlight of your childhood. You’d been devastated as a kid when Van had joined the police and stopped coming by, but as you pull back to look at her you’ve never been more grateful for it.
You give her a weak smile as you let your arms fall at your sides.  She shifts awkwardly on the balls of her feet as she slides her thumbs into her belt loops.  “Should I call you officer Palmer?” You ask.
“If you don’t mind.” She says with a small grin. She gets a more somber look as she takes in the bandages covering your arm. “I actually need to know what happened in there.” She says. “It was him, wasn’t it?” You nod, not able to fully lift your eyes from the ground.
“He was wearing the mask, at least.” You say quietly.
Van nods again as she pulls out a notepad from her pocket. “You’re the only one who’s lived to tell the tale so far. I’m sorry to make you relive it, but we need to know.” She says apologetically.
“I understand.” You say, almost in a whisper. You’re about to start talking when you hear loud yelling coming from further away. You glance up finally to see Shauna frantically running towards you as an officer chases behind her. You spring up from the ambulance to meet her head on as she goes crashing into you at full speed. The two of you just barely manage to stay on your feet as she sends you careening back a few steps. 
She wraps her arms hard enough around you that she nearly crushes you. You grasp desperately at the fabric of her shirt as you bury your head into her neck. Her hands start patting at your sides trying to find injuries as she finally pulls away to get a good look at you. She grabs at your arm to inspect it, being careful not to further injure it. “Shauna.” You murmur at the devastated look on her face.
“I’m so sorry, Y/N.” She whispers. “I never should have left you alone.” You lace your fingers together and squeeze her hands as you make gentle shushing noises. 
“Hey,” You say. “I told you I wouldn’t get brutally murdered while you were gone.” She laughs wetly, pulling a hand away to wipe pointlessly at the tears still steadily streaming down her face.
“Got me there.” She says quietly.
“Can’t help but notice you got here just after that fucker left.” Van says. Shauna pulls away from you with a stricken look as she turns to face her. 
“Are you accusing me of attacking Y/N?” She spits out, but can’t quite manage any actual anger to go with it. She glances back and forth between the two of you before deciding not to bother with Van as she sits herself next to you and wraps her arms around you. Van watches the two of you with a knowing look before sighing. Van turns to wave off the officer that was chasing after Shauna. 
You watch him walk back to where he was patrolling and see Jackie standing by Shauna’s car outside of the police tape watching the whole scene with an expression of shock and horror. She waves so hard her body shakes with it and you lazily wave back as Van asks another question.
“Do you have a cell phone?” Van asks Shauna. You can’t help but snicker at the question, hiding your face in your uninjured hand. Shauna shares an amused look with you as she shakes her head no.
“What’s so funny?” Van asks. 
“Have you seen Shauna’s car? You think she can afford a cell phone?” You say wryly. Van turns to look over at Jackie who’s still leaning against the car. She shrugs, conceding the point. 
“Why’s that matter anyways?” You ask.
“The phone calls.” Van mutters as she writes something down on her notepad. “What did he say to you on the phone?” She prompts.
“I’m sorry, the phone?” You ask bewilderedly. She stops in her tracks to look up at you.
“You didn’t get a call?” She asks. You shake your head. “That’s weird.” She says, “All the other murders show records of a phone call right before. Just start from the beginning then.”
You start telling the story from the beginning, Shauna leaning heavily against you as she keeps flinching whenever you mention something frightening. Van pauses as she gives you a slightly incredulous look. “You ran up the stairs?” She asks. 
“The back doors busted.” Shauna defends with the promise of violence clear on her face. “Handle doesn’t work. Door doesn’t open.” Van holds her hands out placatingly as she writes it down in her notepad. 
You tell the rest of the story without interruption before you’re allowed to go home. Van insists on getting an officer to follow you around until someones able to contact your parents who are both out of town. You decide to go stay at Jackie’s house as her parents are the only ones actually home.
You climb wearily into the passenger seat of Shauna’s car, Jackie having extremely reluctantly relinquished the front seat given the circumstances. Shauna uncharacteristically takes one hand off the wheel to hold your hand the entire drive to Jackie’s house. You stare blankly out the window as you replay the entire confrontation over and over again in your mind.
… 
You, Shauna, and Jackie share mutually annoyed looks in the backseat of Van’s cruiser. She’d insisted on driving you to school in order to keep you safe. You appreciated the thought, truly you did, but there were few things worse in your mind than being driven to school in a cop car. You can’t hide your smile, however, as Shauna and Jackie bicker quietly next to you over which one of them is taking up the other's space in the backseat. Shauna really was not made to sit in the middle seat but she insisted on being able to sit next to you. 
Van pulls to a stop in front of the school and turns to face the three of you in the back. “Ready?” She asks. You nod unenthusiastically as you wait for her to get out and open the door. You try to slide your backpack onto your uninjured arm but Shauna pulls it out of your hands to carry it for you. You roll your eyes at her but find yourself to be endlessly fond of the action anyway. You’ve barely taken a step off the pavement before you hear a voice call out.
“Shauna! Shauna Shipman!” You hear. You start to turn around but Shauna just drags you forward by the hand as she refuses to even humor the voice. You follow unquestionably behind her towards the entrance, more than happy to get away from the prying eyes of the other students. “Nothing to say about the innocent man you got locked up?” The voice calls out.
Shauna whirls around angrily to face her, sending you a quick apology after she accidentally drags you with her. “I have nothing to say to you Taissa Turner!” Shauna says furiously as she points an accusing finger at her. Tai holds her hands out placatingly but you can tell she’s not all that sincere about it. 
Ah, You thought. You knew all about Taissa Turner, the hotshot reporter that was writing a book in favor of Ben Scott’s supposed innocence. Shauna was furious for days when she found out, and judging by the look on her face you think she might finally get to release some of that tension. You wearily look for Van, who's watching the entire interaction with a curious expression. 
“You’re seriously saying that you still believe Ben Scott is guilty?” Tai asks, baffled. “Not only are there new murders taking place in this town but the next person attacked is your friend? In your house?” Shauna scoffs, incredibly dismissive of anything that Taissa Turner could ever say. Even if you thought privately that she might have a point. Still, you and Jackie stand protectively behind Shauna as you give Tai a dirty look over her shoulder.
“She’s just hoping to write a sequel.” You say dismissively. Shauna sends you a thankful look as Tai scoffs.
“Is this about the book? You know someone was going to write it. Why shouldn’t it be me?” Tai says defensively.
“Hope it made you feel good to mock my father like that.” Shauna spits. “If he hadn’t been murdered your little hatchet job in the press would have done a pretty good job of it, bitch!” 
Tai puffs her chest out with what you're sure would be a truly epic rebuttal had she ever got the chance to make it. Shauna’s fist goes flying into her face, landing with a loud thud as it sends her head bouncing off the van behind her. She looks a little dazed with blood running down from her nose, but you can tell she’s getting ready to swing back when Van swoops in.
“Hey! Hey! Enough!” Van yells as she separates all of you. “Go inside. Now!” You gently tug at Shauna’s arm and she lets you lead her inside, but you can tell she’s not happy about it. You bring her hand up to your face to look at her knuckles to inspect them for damage. You lace your fingers together as Jackie leads you over to her locker.
“I can’t believe you just hit her like that.” Jackie says, but she doesn’t seem upset about it. In fact, when the two of you turn to face her she has a darkly amused grin on her face. 
“She deserved it.” You defend Shauna. Shauna hums in acknowledgement, finally managing to calm down after seeing that both of you took her side. Shauna sighs as she looks down at her feet. You squeeze her hand gently but allow her solitude. She’s always been emotionally distant when she had half a mind to, and the murder of her father was no different. You talk quietly with Jackie and she collects her thoughts.
“Hey,” Nat calls out, running over to catch you. Shauna gives her a scary look as she shifts defensively in front of you. 
“What do you want?” Shauna says, crossing her arms in front of her. You roll your eyes; you had a sneaking suspicion this had more to do with just protecting you. You'd heard how Nat had blown up at Shauna the other day when she'd tried to apologize for what she said at lunch, and had a feeling that Shauna was still hanging on to some lingering resentment. 
“Look.” Nat says, awkwardly scuffing her boot against the ground and wincing at the particularly loud sound it made. “I just… I just wanted to say that we're good, y'know? About lunch, I mean.”
“Why the sudden change of heart?” Shauna asks, relaxing back against you. 
Nat shrugs. “Hard to hold a grudge when another one of your friends almost gets turned into a pin cushion”. Shauna tenses up again at what she perceives as fighting words, but lets it go as it makes you laugh. You wrap your uninjured arm around Shauna to pull her closer against you as you rest your head on your shoulder to peer at Nat. 
“I could have taken him.” You say with a grin. Nat rolls her eyes, but the affectionate grin on her face is unmistakable. 
“Yeah, real killer you are.” She says jokingly, before turning strangely serious. “Do they know why he came for you?” She asks.  Shauna reaches up to lace her fingers with yours, trying to calm the both of you back down. 
“Nat.” Jackie interjects sternly, giving her a dirty look at the question. The unavoidable tension creeps back in you as you mull over her question. 
“No.” You answer honestly. You pause for a second then say quietly, “Between us?” Both Jackie and Nat nod quickly, Jackie on her part looks pretty shocked that you're willing to talk about it so soon. 
“They said it was pretty different from what they've seen at other crime scenes. Said maybe it was possible that they were trying to get Shauna and I just shocked them or something.” Nat and Jackie exchange a strangely worried look as Shauna tightens her grip on your hand. 
“But, hey.” You say, holding up your injured arm. “Got me out of practice for a while so jokes on him, right?” You relax back against your locker as Jackie goes on a predictable spiel about how difficult she's found it to get a new coach. 
… 
You rub a comforting hand against Shauna’s back as she lets out an aggravated sigh. “I just don’t get why she’s still here.” She mutters angrily. You and Shauna are leaning up against her car watching Taissa Turner doing yet another update about the Ghostface case in front of the school, carefully applied makeup hiding the bruise on her face. Shauna had hit her a lot harder than she’d thought, to the point that even she had winced when she saw the bruise. Your girlfriend was feeling oddly guilty about the whole situation, given that most of her anger had come from how helpless she’d felt the night before.
“Don’t focus on that, Shauna.” You say. She gives you a slightly amused look.
“Should we talk about how Officer stalker is talking her up?” She asks. You sigh. Shauna, while appreciating Van on some level, was getting more and more fed up with how much she was driving by to check up on you. You found it pretty touching, and it did help you sleep better on some level. Van usually left you alone at school for a few hours given that they had another officer here to watch out for Ghostface, but she seemed to stop by more and more to see Tai.
“I think ‘Officer stalker’ has got some pretty good game, honestly.” You say, nudging Shauna. Tai’s finished her recording and seems to be laughing loudly at something that Van’s said, given by the smug look on her face. Shauna rolls her eyes but ultimately concedes the point. Shauna watches Tai for another long moment before pushing off of the car and walking towards her.
“Shauna!” You call out a little frantically, hurrying to fall into step with her.
“No, I know.” She says. “I just want to talk, promise.”
Judging by the look on Tai’s face as Shauna approaches she seems to have the same idea that you did. Tai tenses up like she's waiting for a fight, the easy going smile previously lighting up her face is gone in an instant. Shauna looks as broody as ever as she steps up to her.
“Do you really think Ben Scott is innocent?” She asks seriously. Tai looks surprised, glancing over at you and Van before slowly nodding. 
“You know I do, Shauna. I wouldn’t have defended him if I didn’t seriously believe in his innocence.” Tai says honestly, still tense and unsure. You can tell this interaction is really unsettling her.
“Tell me why?” Shauna asks quietly. Tai opens her mouth and then pauses to consider. You take this as your chance to leave, deciding that Shauna and Tai probably needed to have this conversation by themselves. You place a quick kiss against Shauna’s cheek before heading off into school. Van walks you to the door, but you can tell her heart isn’t in it as she keeps turning to glance back at Tai.
“You’ll get back to her in a second, Casanova.” You tease Van, shifting your bag on your shoulder. 
She gives you a slightly surprised look, but shakes her head. “Shauna already hit her once.” Van defends weakly. You shrug. She probably wouldn’t hit Tai again. Probably.

You were a junior, you had a small group of friends that shared the same interested, nothing bigger than four people just so you didn't had to eat alone at lunch.
There was this boy in your biology class, Simon Riley, some close people called him Ghost for some reason, you didn't know why. He was always wearing a black mask, covering half of his face, like if he was sick but he wasn't, you saw him playing volleyball wearing that mask and he definitely wasn't sick. He was always quiet in the class, just taking notes and looking through the window, you would be lying to yourself if you didn't thought he was at least a bit attractive.
Your friend, Kelly, who was a social butterfly, managed to know a bit about him. He only has one friend in his grade, a scottish foreigner and the other 2 was a senior and a freshman, they all had silly nicknames for each other but she couldn't discovered what were the nicknames. He always stayed in the school library reading something after class and he smoked cigarettes in the school field every Saturday at 11am and his favorite drink is tea. You didn't question her how she knew those thing, she just did.
You were in the biology class and the teacher assigned everyone a project, to make a resume of the books chapter that you had read the whole semester, It was a pair work... That the teacher would choose the pairs, pratically everyone complained but she did it anyway. It was simple, everyone had a number, if you are number 1, your pair is number 2, if your number is number 3, your pair is number 4 and such. You were number 7 and it just happened that Simon was number 8, he looked at you and then back at the teacher when she announced that you were his pair, he seemed... Almost annoyed.
It was Friday and the project had to be delivered on Monday, so you and Simon had the whole weekend to do it. You decided to talk with Simon after class to discuss where you two would meet to do the project but you couldn't find him anywhere so you had to ask the other students, none of them knew where he was until you meet one particular student, that one that had a scottish accent and a mohawk.
The boy said to you that Simon was really, really introverted and didn't liked people in his house unless that he was friends with them... And he didn't liked befriending with other juniors for some reason, despite that, the boy — that you learned the name was John MacTavish... Or Soap—, gave you Simon's address and said that, to not upset him, to bring him something as a gift, especially tea and gave you Simon's phone number before having to go.
The next day was Saturday, you woke up early and got ready, taking a shower and dressing comfortably, not caring too much about how you look, you took your notebook, laptop, pens and of course, some chamomile tea, hoping he would like it.
You took the bus to his neighborhood and knocked at his door. After a few minutes waiting, Simon opens the door, he seems like he just woke up, his hair messy and his eyes looks heavy. His eyebrows frowns, he apparently didn't liked seeing you here. "What do you want?" He says, his voice deep as ever. "The science project." You answered, looking at him, trying to sound friendly.
"it's fuckin' ten in the morning, go back to your house. We have until Monday to do this shit and I don't want to do it today, go wash some dishes or a laundry and leave me alone." He spitted, closing the door, not leaving space for you to talk. You were surprised, you didn't expected the quiet, introverted Simon to be like that. You were determined! You has things to do tomorrow and you need this project ready today.
You knock on the door again, "Go away!" He yells, "I have something for you!" You yell back and after a few minutes of silence, he opens the door and you show him the chamomile tea box, he looks at you and then at the box and grabs it, "come in." He says, his voice tired and he opens the door to you. You step inside, taking off your shoes and leaving it at the doorway.
The house was kinda messy, a lot of boxes here and there, especially of pizzas and the kitchen smelled like tea. "Where are your parents?" You asks Simon, following him inside the house. "They're on vacation and they decided I'm old enough to be home alone." He mumbles and then turns to you.
"Who gave you my address?" He questions, crossing his arms. You were slightly intimidated, he was so big for a teenager, it was probably good genetics and maybe gym? you never saw him working out. Maybe the fact he was always dressing hoodies and sweaters that covered his whole body also helped how you never noticed.
You gulps and looks at him, "John." You replies, he frowns slightly, "what John? I know a lot of Johns." He rolls his eyes. "Uh... MacTavish? Soap?" You nervously answers. He sighs and chuckles, "of course, Soap." He teased and then started to prepare the tea, taking a kettle and filling it with water, boiling it on the stove.
The following minutes are silent, he wasn't looking at you, you just wanted to do the project and get out of there. You open your mouth but then hesitated, so stayed quiet. You two were finished at exactly 1:40pm, the project wasn't perfect but it had to be that because you were a busy person and didn't had time tomorrow.

He takes your hand and your backpack for you, walking you to the garage. You jump into the passenger seat and he goes to the driver seat, you give him the address of the place and he starts driving as fast as legally as possible. Your hair flying in the wind as you laugh.

When imagining criminal talk, you imagine murder, guns, the same cold-hearted clichè you hear on the silver screen, however when encountering brains that are not well developed enough to find full time jobs to be honorable members of society you find conversations like these:
“I’m literally batman.” Sangyeon spits across the passenger seat where Juyeon is busy groaning in annoyance, left palm rested on his head.
“No because that would mean I’m robin which is just so wrong.” Juyeon retorted, looking out to the road ahead ignoring the disappointment from Chanhee who had the courtesy of listening to these imbecilic conversations in the back seat.
“Guys-” Chanhee began but was shortly cut off.
“I would be batman.”
“No you wouldn’t, I’m batman.”
“Literally how? I’m batman.”
“Guys?” Chanhee couldn’t seem to get a word in between the two grown men as they drove to their destination, seemingly forgetting all about any plans or what they had to do. “You both are batman, I’m robin.”
Being the only one with a degree in computer science and the brains to execute any plans, Chanhee didn’t mind being robin as long as it settled the childish arguments between the two.
“We’re 5 minutes out, I’ve got into the security systems and disabled the CCTV cameras so we should be good to go. The place closes in 10.” Finally getting his words heard, the other two boys nodded and Sangyeon stepped on the gas - a wide cheshire cat grin spread across his face.
The night was a deep navy, the clouds wrapping up the silver crescent moon in a soft grey blanket, the street lights flickered as the wind hurled and whistled like the sound of pained ghosts.
A small café, bar at night, dimly lit with warm lights stood out from the other stores on 7th street, the place always did well and attracted customers from all over the globe with its homemade goods, in house brewery and highly prestigious aesthetics.
You were working your late shift that night and if you hadn’t noticed the red security light on the cameras begin blinking and suddenly going out - you’d have no reason to believe anything was wrong.
On the phone to your manager, you frantically began asking whether the security had been breached, as you couldn’t get on the till machine to view the stores earnings either - being the lazy old man who you’d woke up from his beauty sleep, he of course began yelling and being entirely unhelpful.

“Y/N, it must happen all the time. I’m going back to bed I don’t have time for your shit this evening.” With that he hung up, leaving you afraid and the sound of tires screeching from behind the glass window pane had made everything you suspected feel as if it was coming true.
Frantically you got down behind the counter, making an attempt to press the panic alarm but failing as the sound of the door being shattered into tiny crystals screamed through the store, masking your whimpers you kept a tight grip of your mouth.
“Hey kitty cat? You can come out we know you’re here.” A low voice purred, already mapping out the sequence of your death you kept quiet and tried to prolong the moment.

“Go out the back. It’s unlocked.” You had no idea why you’d told them that, however something in your conscience told you to, whether the devil on your shoulder had told you or you genuinely hated your job that much.
“Why?-” The familiar cat eyes asked, whilst the doe eyed one also stared in confusion over at you.
“Guys there’s no time let’s go.” The muscle of the group barged through the back door, just in time for officers to breach the building.
“Are you unharmed? Are the perpetrators still in the building?” An officer with a megaphone yelled into the store, you did the standard procedure and walked out with your hands in the air.
The last thing you expected was to be grounded to the floor by an officer, your face hitting the pavement lightly with your hands behind your back.
“You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be provided for you.” The officer spoke in a gruff voice, screaming to stop resisting as you laid confused.
“I literally work here. I didn’t do anything.”
“Ma’am this store closed hours ago, you have no-”
A shot, a deafening shot that began a frenzy, the officer behind you fell to the floor before you were grabbed and within half a millisecond told to sprint.
A jet black Mercedes had blocked the main road, the sound of chaos erupting behind you, before the door opened and you were let in. The driver sped to the scene before your saviour swept into the passenger seat, if they'd been able to send more police cars there would have been a high likelihood you'd have never gotten away. However, leaving the scene the immense stomach feeling of guilt consumed you.
"You killed a man? Why would you do that?" You yelled suddenly as a silence grew across the men that had gotten you in to the situation.
"Hey, I didn't kill him, it’s not fatal he’ll be fine.” Pulling off the mask, cat eyes revealed himself, his black hair, sharp gestures and sultry voice. Juyeon Lee? You almost couldn’t believe your eyes.. nevermind look at his.
“Besides he would have either killed you or you’d be behind bars. No state attorney would give you a good time in court, we’re just repaying the favor.” Also ripping off his balaclava the driver looked back at you in your seat, his honey skin and deep brown eyes. Sangyeon?
“Do you guys have no sympathy? Is this what you’re doing with your lives now?” You asked distraught over the entire situation that had unfolded.
“Sometimes it’s safer to be feared than loved, y/n.” Sangyeon looked back, a sadistic grin painted across his lips as he almost looked down on your tears.
“Just be quiet and we’ll talk more when we get back. Sangyeon drive.” The boy next to you spoke, his eyes engrossed in the laptop in front of him. He had a more ethereal appearance than the others almost fairy-like which must be a great disguise of innocence for the life he lived. Possibly the most shocking reveal of them all, Chanhee Choi.
Despite feeling as if your entire world had collapsed in front of you and the wavering feelings of guilt eating you up like a lion to steak, somehow it was the most alive you felt in a long time. However the most shocking reveal of this entire encounter was that the same people you’d went to high school with, were living double lives as some of the most notorious criminals in the city.
As you’d arrived a small home located in the middle of a forest area you hadn’t recognized before, the same familiar cat eyes had something to say after the others had already wandered inside.
“I don’t want to be anywhere near you.” You looked at Juyeon seriously folding your arms, had you not had history you probably would have been more grateful for his actions tonight.
“That was years ago, darling. Do you think I still love you? Do you think I still care?” He laughed, his teeth curling into a smirk and his tongue poking the side of his jaw.
“Clearly! You jumped in front of an armed police officer you absolute maniac. I was always right about you, you’ve become some kind of psycho, that’s why I broke up with you and why the hell is Chanhee even involved with you?” You yelled, quickly being hushed by his voice as he stepped closer.
Something about meeting an ex after years of being apart can feel awkward, but for you it felt like time never passed. The evil inherently toxic nature of Juyeon was always drawing no matter how much you told yourself no, it was addicting.. those feelings of spite, anger, envy were all things that buried that burning feeling of love.
As he looked at you under the moonlight you’d been reminded of the way his eyes softened, the way that the cold words he choses were always ways of communicating that he cared. He didn’t enjoy that he’d corrupted your life, he thought he was saving you. If you couldn’t bare the weight of your world he would take you into his, he didn’t want to ruin your life.. He’d risk his life for you, since he knew his was a lot less “valuable”, which you continuously told him back then wasn’t true.
“Maybe I do but remember, you wouldn’t be alive if it weren’t for me y/n and I told you not to fall in love with me.” He shook his head, looking down at you, tracing his finger across your jaw, bringing back all those feelings of safety you once felt. “There’s nothing left for you but me. Everyone else is gone. It’s always been that way and you know that.”

This is all too much. it’s not enough Blue is haunting him by working in the same embassy, in being assigned to be his glorified babysitter but to be living in the Tome apartment he used to live in?
Javi’s really pissed some karmic force off.
It was surreal, standing there in the Tome apartment he used to live in and suddenly flooded with all those memories while being aware that everything was slightly different, slightly out of place. There were different photos, different plants, different smells and personal touches. It was uncanny.
And then he’d almost kissed you.
He still can’t quite reconcile your reaction, can’t quite make sense of it all. It doesn’t matter though; it was a bad idea. A terrible idea even. There’s something in Javi - whenever he’s faced with those regrets and mistakes, whenever things seem to be going wrong, he wants to find solace in someone else. He did that with Katie, the intern, and he wanted to do that with you too.
Or was it more? He knows you, or at least knew you once. You’re part of his history, of his hometown. In Bogotá that makes you a spectre, reminding him of who he wanted to be, who he used to be. There’s something soothing yet so confusing about your presence right now.
He thinks about you, about what would have happened if you had kissed, the way your lips would have felt, how far it could have gone. Even now, every time you’re in the Tome room, he can feel the rising temptation, the desire to be closer to you, to be with you. He’s no longer immune to the smell of your perfume, to the way you look down at the ground for a microsecond before you smile, or how you fiddle with your necklace when you’re thinking about something. There’s something simultaneously fierce and vulnerable about you; that keeps you an enigma to him.
That moment in your home - at his old apartment - opened a door to something he was trying to keep locked away.
He’s glad nothing happened, glad he didn’t ruin everything with you as well. He probably would have.
That seems to be the way of things now.
Days have passed since the arrest and with them, an itching sensation has risen that things are going downhill. The pressure is slowly building, the tension mounting. Javi feels like he’s a lobster in boiling water, unable to escape and aware of what is coming and not sure whether there’s any fight left, or if he should just accept his fate.
He remembers the way the panic rose as he was called out in the meeting after the arrest; asked what his roadmap to victory was. This new role with its suits, ties and endless meetings? It’s not really him.
He can’t give up though. The names and faces of so many of the people he has let down in Colombia haunt him. Without someone like Martinez on his side too, Javi’s worried.
He needs results. He needs to find Jurado, to get more evidence. If he can’t do this, all the evidence his team has amassed, the progress he’s made, will collapse like a house of cards.
So, he asks Stoddard to play the wiretap tapes, tries to ignore how Stoddard reacts to that, pretends he didn’t hear Stoddard say you would not react well if you found out about this. Instead, he asks Stoddard about where he sees his career in five years if he asks others that question on the tapes’ legality and he feels the weight of the job add just a little more to his shoulders.
The odds are stacked against him, against bringing down this cartel.
What is he supposed to do?

“Please tell me this is a joke, your idea of humour perhaps?” you ask, voice acerbic and body taut.
Ever since you overhead Stoddard talking to one of your colleagues in thinly guided hypothetical scenarios a few hours ago, you’ve been waiting for this conversation. You had to sit through a meeting with your manager while quietly planning out everything you would calmly say to tear Javier Peña apart. It is a true skill to be able to do that while looking like you are listening to whatever the other person was saying.
In the past few hours, you have toyed with several reactions. From screaming at him in front of everyone to using that cold, deadly voice you only used at work when someone had really upset you. In some of your more extreme imagined responses, you have thrown the empty glasses in his office against the wall and roared too. However, that strikes you as a little excessive. You’ll save that for Plan C perhaps.
Monologues have been meticulously planned, edited, and rehearsed under your breath as you went about your day. You mentally experimented with the timbre of your voice as you spooned coffee into your mug, with exactly which words to use to best craft your argument, your admonishment.
Only now you’re here, facing Javi and it’s real.
“Blue, I-” Javi looks at you with those deep brown eyes, pleading somehow, but you refuse to fall for that.  He’s wearing one of those infuriating well-fitting shirts, the top button undone and tie loosened.
You almost kissed him …
You look over and notice the ash tray on his desk is once again filled with cigarettes and his desk is covered in scattered papers and files.
You know he’s been under pressure. Over the months, you’ve noticed the way he fidgets; the way he automatically moves his fingers when he’s nervous or under pressure. You know what the higher ups are asking of him, you know it’s a lot for one person to bear. To do what he’s done though? Any sympathy ebbs away.
“Because,” you continue, your voice venomous and arms folded, “after everything we’ve talked about, I know you wouldn’t knowingly instruct one of your team to conduct a wiretap like that, not without going through the correct processes. I know that, right? Because you’re not a complete fucking idiot.”
“I am trying to get a fucking case so we can stop the Cali cartel. Stop being naive!” Javi snaps, finally showing his real feelings. He’s not sorry, you know he isn’t, and that makes this even worse.
“By using an illegal wiretap? Do you have any idea what that could do to the case? Yes, of course you do which is why you didn’t tell me.”
“I was protecting you.”
“That’s not your job, Javi. My job is to protect this case and right now you’re hindering me.”
”Look, I know we can’t use the tapes -”
“Or anything from them! It’s fruit of the poisoned tree, Javier. This entire avenue of investigation isn’t so much on shaky ground as it is utterly destroyed. I - I don’t even know what to say to you right now.”
Your head is throbbing and you massage your temples to no avail.
“It took a while, but I am almost there with Franklin Jurado’s wife, Blue and then -”
“Oh, I bet you are,” you bite back.
“What’s that supposed to mean, huh?”
“What do you think?” you retort, completely lost to the argument at this point. Everything in you is saying to be calm, rational, to not let your emotions dictate but you are infuriated by what Javi has done.
It isn’t just about how ill-advised, how unethical it all is or how it could compromise your case. It’s because he did it anyway, knowing what your role was, knowing the position it would leave you in.
“I’m waiting on a - confirmation of something and then I’ll know where he is and we’ll get him. It’ll be solid. I have a plan.”
You sigh. “You better, Javi, you better.”

The parcel arrives the day after your confrontation with Javi. You immediately recognise the messy handwriting as one of your closest friends from back home, Shelley. Immediately it acts like a balm for your sharp edges and irritation.
To both your amusement and horror, during college she started dating one of your best friends from home, Carlos. Now the two of them are married and live in Laredo of all places. Shelley hosts a local radio show and while the people of your hometown generally seem to prefer more mainstream music to Nine Inch Nails, Shelley is persistently building a small, devoted following.
You miss them both. Shelley had made it clear that she had hoped you would come back to Texas when it was clear you needed to leave DC. She had even joked in your last phone call when you first arrived in Bogotá that she’d told you to go for a fresh start, a new job, but not to leave the damn country!
Over recent years, you’ve mostly ended up meeting outside of Laredo at concerts for bands you loved or last summer you’d all hired a house by the coast for a week. It had been you, Shelley, Carlos and Jamie, your now ex-boyfriend. 
The box has arrived at a perfect time. Javi and you were even more tentative around each other today. Yesterday’s frustration was so thick in the air you could taste it, feel it constricting around your body like insulation.
Beyond that, you’ve been riddled with doubts, anxieties, and unwanted memories since the near kiss. It’s like one moment has dropped you months into the past, back to a time you don’t want to think about.
You hate the double standards and hypocrisy at play, the assumptions you’re trying to prevent. You hate the politics of it all - the way you must prove yourself and prove yourself and never ever let a single vulnerability show while you’re at work.
You don’t open the box from your friends until you’re in your apartment, perched on the edge of your couch as you tentatively cut it open.
There are numerous packets of some of your favourite types of candy, several new paperbacks, three letters and most excitingly of all, two cassette tapes.
It’s funny how just a few small touches can immediately transport you somewhere else, can make you feel a little lighter.
You take in the three envelopes, one is clearly from Shelley, it looks the longest, the next is clearly from Carlos and is short but sweet. The other you can tell by the blocky handwriting is from Jamie. You’d spoken to him before you left for Colombia, told him that Shelley would be the best way to reach you if he wanted to.
You’ve never stayed friends with an ex before, but Jamie is different. You think the real indicator of this was that several months after your break-up when everything had kicked off in DC, he had been there for you, been a steady and calming presence when you were questioning everything and Shelley and Carlos were so far away. It’s probably part of the reason he’s still tolerated enough by Shelley and Carlos that they let him send his contribution to your care package via them, that they would even have reached out to him to get this or would have known you would be okay with that.
For a second you remember the time the four of you had met in New York to go to a concert for a band you all loved. Everything seemed simpler then - life, relationships, work.
You think about the adrenaline of this job; of how much your life has changed since then. Would you ever have imagined having dinner with Javi after he arrested a cartel leader back then?
This country is changing you slowly. Perhaps it’s not all for the bad either.
You open one of the packets of candy and the letter from Shelley first.
Shelley’s letter makes you feel like she’s right there in the room talking to you. You smile warmly at the memories of your friendship with her. Shelley’s always encouraged you, always been there for you, she’s been that supportive voice in all of those moments where you’ve wondered if you can do something. She’s been a friend you haven’t been able to shut out, who hasn’t let you push her away. You hope you represent something similar to her.
One passage stands out in letter because even in this moment, you can’t escape Javi.
Your brother says that a certain Javier Peña is out in Colombia too, which I didn’t think was a big deal but Carlos tells me definitely is. I think I saw him at Danny’s wedding and if I’m right, he is a tall glass of water. Do you see him at work? Tell me everything!
Well Shelley, you think, I completely messed up and almost kissed him, then rejected him and the man just leaves me completely confused. I may also have chewed him out spectacularly yesterday so I don’t think he’d ever want to kiss me again, even I wanted to.
You miss your friends; you wish you could more readily just phone Shelley and have a long talk over a glass of wine. You need to write back to her. Carefully, of course. There is so much that cannot be put in writing at all lest it fall into the wrong hands.  Words are slippery in a world like this; you can’t just say whatever you are thinking, but you can’t avoid replying either.
You can’t concentrate on the letters though. Your confrontation with Javi still rages through your veins - you’ve analysed everything you could have said differently, come up with several witty comebacks you missed and perhaps worst of all, in your mind you ended the discussion far more positively.
Maybe it wouldn’t be as bad if it wasn’t for the near kiss. That’s just as confusing in your mind too.
You were reckless with Javi. There is no way you can afford being seen that way here. It’s too close, too risky, too much. You have already left one job, fled the country once. If anyone from DC even heard whispers about what could have happened with you and Javi …
You scowl, trying to stop your spiral as quickly as possible. It’s okay, nothing has happened.
You take another piece of candy and sigh. You need to forget about what almost happened with Javi. For both of your sakes.

Willemstad is beautiful. The mix of painted buildings and blue ocean makes it look like paradise. You never expected that you would be somewhere like here on a work trip.
A couple of days ago, when Javi had told you he finally had located Jurado, you expected that you would just create the motions and legal briefs. You’d sit in your open plan office and listen out to hear whether the operation was successful. Only now you’ve been swept along with him to this amazing place and you feel a complete imposter.
You’re not an agent; you’re a lawyer. This isn’t like any courtroom or legal office you’ve encountered before.
“Stoddard’s confirmed all the logistics, right?” you ask as you start to walk towards the main police building with Javi, happy to be stretching your legs after the short flight.
“Yes. It should all be in place so you don’t need to worry about that. I wanted you here more for the Miami side - I need this guy on US soil as soon as possible and when he is -”
“We need a deal.”
“Yeah.”
“Do you think he’ll cooperate? Has the wife given any indication of that when you uh, spoke to her?”
“I think he has to. Fuck, Blue, for this to work then he has to. I need his testimony.”
You look at Javi. For a moment you’re taken aback to some of your initial thoughts about him in Bogotá; that he looked like Atlas with the weight of the world on his shoulders. How is it possible he looks even more burdened now?
“Let’s get it then. I’ll work on the paperwork while you arrest him.”
He’s covered in sweat, a grim smile on his face. The pink shirt he was wearing this morning, the one you thought looked infuriatingly good on him, is darkened with sweat.
“He’s arrested then?” you ask cautiously. You’d heard that Javi’s original plan to arrest him within the grounds of the bank was shut down by the police; apparently that wasn’t how things were done in Curacao. From Javi’s appearance it’s clear a chase has taken place.
Javi nods, running a hand through his sweaty hair and you wonder how easy the arrest was for him and the team. “We’re getting the plane ready and we’re going straight to Miami. The Ambassador said the extradition papers were set? Have you updated Justice?”
You point at a pile of papers in front of you. While Javi’s appears to have been chasing Jurado all around Curaçao, you’ve been stuck in this room typing up briefs and motions in preparation.
“We should have everything we need. I spoke to the Ambassador earlier and then the team in Miami before you came in and we’re all set,” you say, stifling a yawn as you stretch your legs. You’ve been sitting for too long.
You hand Javi your glass of water. He looks like he needs it more than you and he gratefully accepts, gulping it down. You try not to notice the rivulets of sweat on his neck as he does that.
“Have you spoken to Stoddard about the wife? The moment the cartel knows, Javi, they will - and if I were Franklin, I wouldn’t have a deal unless she was included and safe.”
“I know, I’m calling now. We’ve got to get this all in place before they know we have him.”
   It feels like you barely have time to collect your thoughts before you’re on a plane with Javi and Franklin Jurado on your way back to the United States.
You hear snippets of Javi’s conversations with Franklin as you walk back from the bathroom but you’re not paying attention to what is said. Instead you are intent on using the flight time to get ahead on the many other briefs and motions you need to complete, to test out the exact wording of the plea deal with Franklin Jurado, to complete the plans and decision trees for Justice and Jurado’s lawyers just in case.
You miss the courtroom.
You’ve realised that’s where you shine, where you feel able to most make a difference. This job, as varied, as unexpected as it is, is a step removed from that. It’s more about diplomacy, about briefings and managing interested parties and application of the law but not in a courtroom, not where you feel most at ease.
You can’t regret this job. There are so many parts where you feel you are adding value and you needed to leave DC regardless. This was the right decision.
Javi gets up from his seat, walking over and leaning over you from the aisle. You immediately put your file down and look at him.
“We’re landing in a few minutes. You ready for this, Blue? Is the deal ready?”
“Oh yes,” you say with a slight smile, “Now you’re in my wheelhouse, Javi.”
“Looking forward to it,” he says in a low voice.

Steve drove to school feeling lighter than he had in weeks. His parents were still shit but he had friends and people who would look out for him and wasn’t that just a surprise and a half.
He pulled into the parking lot and got out, Eddie pulling into the spot next to him. He had closed the door, pulling his backpack over one shoulder when Nancy and Jonathan appeared out of nowhere.
Eddie raised an eyebrow at him.
“Nah, it’s fine,” Steve said with a small smile. “I’ve got this. I’ll see you at lunch, okay.”
Eddie nodded and walked to class.
Steve turned back to see Nancy and Jonathan staring at him in shock. “How can I help you two?”
“Is everything okay?” she asked. “You’ve been missing a lot of school.”
Steve raised both eyebrows.
“We’re worried about you, man,” Jonathan said. “Especially after what happened with Miss Chen and your assignment.”
Steve sighed. He wanted to be mad at them but he couldn’t. They were worried he might be thrown in jail.
“That was straight up bullshit, by the way,” he growled. “I wasn’t going to show an actual demogorgon or make the characters even look like us. It was just a way to process the trauma. Because I don’t know about you two, but I can’t sleep at night. If it’s not waking up screaming, it’s not being able to go to sleep at all.”
Nancy and Jonathan shared a glance.
Jonathan sighed. “Yeah. It’s got be worse for you because Nancy has Mike and I have both my mom and Will...and well it’s pretty bad for him, too. But you’re all alone in that big house and you’re parents don’t know.” He made an aborted gesture of understanding.
“So we just wanted to check up on you,” Nancy explained, hugging her books to her chest.
Steve ran his hands over his face. “I’m just trying to move on. Make friends that aren’t bullies. That’s not to say you guys are or whatever. It’s just...I don’t want to be on high alert the rest of my life. I’m happy for the first in so long.”
Jonathan licked his lower lip slowly. “You don’t have to answer, but are you with Eddie?”
Steve’s head reared back. “What? How did you–”
He smiled softly, clapping him on the shoulder. “Good for you, man.”
Nancy just looked between them confused.
Jonathan kissed the top of her head. “I’ll explain later. We’ve got to get to class.” He waved at Steve. “See you around, man.” And led her into the school.
Well, shit.
Steve didn’t know how he felt about them knowing before Jeff and Gareth and the rest. But it was out of the bag now. And despite everything he’d been through with Jonathan he knew he wouldn’t tell anyone.
He sighed and made his way to the swimming pool to start morning practice.

Steve sat at the edge of the pool in his Speedo, just kicking his feet. Coach Hall came over.
“Hey, Harrington,” he said, crouching down. “Got word from Doc Martinez. You’re cleared for competition. He says your scans look good and as long as you don’t have a headache day of, you’re good to go.”
Steve grinned. “That’s great news, Coach. Do you think I could add butterfly back in or should stick to relay?”
Coach Hall smiled fondly. “Well, I know I would prefer my best butterfly swimmer back in, but...”
Steve laughed. “Yeah, yeah, I get it.”
Coach Hall patted his shoulder and he slipped into the pool. Ezra immediately swam over to meet him.
“Hey, what did Coach say?”
Steve told him and Ezra grinned. “Hell, yeah. It’s good to see you back, man. It was lonely without you.”
Steve laughed, pushing him away. “Get off, you loon.”
Ezra laughed with him and swam back to the other side of the pool. Steve pulled his goggles down over his eyes and dove beneath the water. Instantly the buzzing sounds inside his head calmed and he felt at peace.
This was where he belonged. He liked basketball, he was good at it. Baseball was fine, but he spent most of the game being bored. But this? This was bliss. Just him and the water.
He surfaced, taking a large breath. He heard the coach’s whistle and came over to the side with everyone else. He listened to the instructions and nodded.
Suddenly it was time to go wash up and change. He eyed the girls as they passed each other. The girls were coming in as the boys were leaving. All the girls were twittering and point at the guys as the guys leered back in turn. Steve didn’t feel the surge of attraction he did when he thought of Eddie up on that stage last night. There was no swooping of his belly, no heat further down.
Oh.
Oh.
Well, that was certainly something he hadn’t really considered. He had been expecting some kind of attraction. He had had sex with only girls, he had only been on dates with girls. But now that he had something to compare the feelings to...
It was heartbreakingly obvious that he was gay.
Shit.
Steve fretted over showering with the guys. But when he got there he realized that he automatically self-corrected and didn’t look. He never had. It had been a habit. One that he did even with the knowledge he was attracted to boys.
Huh.
That was quite the revelation.

Steve barely made it through his next two classes because he wanted to see Eddie so bad.
He grabbed his lunch and went to go sit down went got bumped into by one of his old baseball teammates.
He managed to hold on to the tray, but he growled, “Watch it, man.”
The boy looked him up and down. “I see you hang with the Freaks now, Harrington. You take it up the ass now, too?”
Steve eyes raked over him. “Why? You looking for a turn?”
The boy pushed him. “I’m not a fag like you, freak!”  
Steve sighed. He could feel almost every eye in the cafeteria on them. “Look,” he said, gripping the edges of the tray. “Doesn’t it get exhausting trying to prove something to these assholes?” He waved at their captive audience. “They don’t care about you or me. In six months, they won’t even remember our names.”
“Just because people have forgotten you, Harrington,” the boy growled, “doesn’t mean they’ll forget me, asshole.”
Steve laughed. “I think between the two of us, they’re more likely to forget you then me.” He leaned forward. “You want to know why? Because you haven’t forgotten me, dude. So what does that say about the rest of them?”
The kid sneered and stalked off.
Steve shook his head and then continued his trek to Eddie’s table. He sat down to eat, but after a moment he realized that they were all staring at him, wide-eyed and in shock.
“What?”
“Dude!” Jeff said, sitting back.
Brian nodded. “That was the most brutal verbal take down I’ve seen in a long time, man.”
“It was sick!” Gareth said gleefully.
Eddie stared at him, doe-eyed and fond. “I love you.”
The other three laughed.
Steve grinned back. “I know, I love you, too.”
Jeff, Brian, and Gareth all looked at each other, sharing shocked by happy faces.
“Holy shit, holy shit, holy shit!” Gareth said, bouncing almost out of his chair.
“When did you guys get together?” Jeff hissed, leaning forward so they weren’t overheard.
Eddie blushed. “This morning.” He ducked his head, shyly.
“Boom-chicka-wow-wow,” Brian teased. “Don’t think we didn’t notice that Eddie here was wearing Steve-o’s clothes.”
“Guys...” Steve protested, “it wasn’t like that. My parents came home and my dad was being he’s usual ass-self and Eddie stayed over to make sure I was okay.”
Jeff sighed. “Damn. Can’t tease you about that one.”
“But we can still tease you,” Gareth said with a grin, “about Eddie wearing designer jeans without a single rip or tear.”
Eddie looked down at his pants and cursed. “Shit. I didn’t think about that.”
“Ah yes,” Steve said dreamily. “Eddie’s aesthetic. Wouldn’t want to destroy that carefully maintained image.”
“Shut it, Harrington,” Eddie grumbled.
Steve laughed out loud. “I know it’s almost the end of the day or whatever,” he said digging into his backpack. “But you can use this to distress them.” He handed over a couple of sheets of sandpaper.
“Why do you have sandpaper in your backpack, dude?” Jeff asked.
“It’s for my art class,” Steve explained. “We have these little paper sticks we use to help with shading called smudge sticks and the only way to clean them is to rub them over sandpaper. Here, let me show you.”
He got out his drawing pad and a smudge stick, flipping to a drawing he was still working on. He began working the stick over the harsh pencil lines, smoothing them down.
‘That’s so cool,” Gareth said, leaning closer.
Steve held up the stick. “See how dirty it got?” Everyone nodded. And then Steve grabbed the sandpaper and rubbed the stick over it, making sure to turn the stick so he got all the sides. “Tada!”
“Huh,” Eddie said, “that is neat.”
Steve shrugged. “Yeah, well. So there you go, you have something to make the jeans more you.”
Eddie stared at him starry-eyed. “You are an absolute wonder, Steve Harrington.”
Steve just blushed and shook his head.

Steve got called to the office in his drama class saying that his mother was on the phone.
He sighed and reassured everyone that everything was fine. That she had promised to call and that’s all this was.
He didn’t tell them that the reason she was calling while Steve was in class is because she was in her layover in Paris, France.
He walked into the office and the secretary left him alone. Not because of who he was, but because of who his mother was.
“Hey, Mom,” Steve greeted.
“I’m sorry to pull out of class, love,” Mrs Harrington replied. “But our flight to France was delayed but our flight out of France was bumped up an hour and we only have forty minutes between flights now.”
He sighed. “That sucks. Were you able to get your luggage, okay?”
“We were, thank you, Steven,” she murmured. “I wanted to apologize for your father last night. You know how shouty he gets when he starts drinking. He never means the things he says.”
Steve closed his eyes. He thought that’s what this conversation was going to be about. What all their conversations were about. Nadia Harrington apologizing for whatever dickish thing her husband had done. It was one of the reasons his mother was so respected in town.
Dad would come tearing through making his mark, making himself the center of attention and then Mom would come behind and smooth away bad feelings.
“It’s okay, Mom,” he assured her. “I know what he’s like. But I really can’t quit drama. Or I won’t graduate.”
She sighed. “I know, dear. And I know you’re only doing your best. But he just has such high hopes for you. To start working his accounting firm, to follow in his footsteps.”
Steve swallowed around the lump in his throat. “I’m just not good with numbers like he is.”
Mrs Harrington hummed. “We’ll figure something out, Steven.”
“We always do, Mom,” he agreed.
“I love you so, much,” she murmured. “But your father is giving me the stink eye.”
“Bye, Mom.”
Steve hung up the phone and sighed deeply into his hands. The secretary came out and smiled at him.
“It’s so nice of her to call you to check up on you,” she said cheerfully.
Steve stared at her blankly. There was no asking how he was. What he was doing. Who his new friends were. Just excuses for his dad. He forced a smile in return and then left to go back to class.
Nothing quite like a conversation with your mother to ruin your day, he sighed as he settled back into his group.

You stormed down the hallway to your room, Matt following closely behind. "Stop following me!" You whisper yell, trying to be quiet as your brother is asleep in his room. You reach your door, attempting to slam it in his face when he puts his arm out, stopping the door before you can. He has an annoying smirk on his face when you turn to glare at him. "What's got your panties in a twist?" He says, making you roll your eyes. "You're a disgusting pervert." You sneer at him, referring to when he had a hand up your skirt moments earlier as you were trying to study at the kitchen table.
"Don't act you don't like it." He responded, the smug smirk on his face growing wider. "Don't act like that's the first time I've touched you. Like I didn't just have you begging me to let you cum the other night." He added, leaning closer to you, a dangerous look in his eyes.
You scoffed, pushing him away from you by his chest. "I don't recall anything like that ever happening." You say with disgust in your voice. You both knew you were lying, of course. But you had done your best to try and forget your momentary weakness that night.
"Why don't I jog your memory then?" He speaks lowly, moving in closer again, forcing you to walk backwards further into your room, closing the door behind him and locking it. Your heart races and thighs clench together, that stupid smirk still on his face as he wraps one hand around your throat, the other harshly gripping your waist and smashes his lips to yours.
