@bcauseofreasons submitted: I don't know if this creature counts as a bug -- I think they might be a crustacean -- but maybe worth a smile anyway! So many legs. A huge number of these guys were running around on dry rocks at a beach I visited near Santa Barbara, California.
It’s an isopod! Which is a crustacean, yes. But we’ll consider them bugs when they live on land. This one specifically is a western sea slater, which lives on rocky sea shores of western North America :)
Went to the beach today. Here's a photo dump of the beautiful nature and some animals too. I saw lots of lizards, bugs, crabs, sea slaters, and even a sea lion. There were also wavy turban snail shells around.
How do we all feel about questioning posts that are way too long because I originally wrote them on Dreamwidth and was just having so much fun constructing them like some kind of prose
I'm starting to think that sometimes, maybe the best answers are the simplest ones, that you came up with right away before then overcomplicating things with forced "cool" or "rare" answers. Answers that make the most sense because they're so obvious as to be staring you right in the face, and not answers that you had to scrounge up from circumstantial subconscious fragments. Red-tailed hawk was the second theriotype I ever confirmed, and the first bird one. I've always been a buteo, and I knew that, but I went with Harris's hawk instead for so long. I guess it was because I knew red-tail was the "basic" bird kintype and thought people would think not that I was faking, but that I didn't actually do any research or have expertise on birds and went with red-tail because it was the only one I knew, which is almost a worse libel to me. Or because I felt like red-tail was too obvious, too simple, too easy, maybe too influenced by media and what's always been more popular? Early on in my blog I had even written a whole post, which blew up (well, for therian Tumblr standards), about the importance of looking into other predatory birds before one confirms red-tailed hawk, so the idea of then confirming it myself felt almost fraudulent, like I was a con artist.
Ever since accepting I'm also a red-tail, while I thought I was both, I just can't see myself as a Harris's hawk. It doesn't come naturally, it feels forced. I had this same problem summer of last year after I had been trying to explain why I felt like a hawk and decided on Harris's hawk, but "demoted" it to just a familiar cameo shift because it just didn't feel like I was being genuine. It felt like a mask. I had thought the problem was that I was too many different species, I had too many theriotypes, some of them were just wanting to be something, and I needed to Occam's razor down what was real and what was wishful thinking, and Harris's hawk was the first to go. But since then, I have confirmed additional theriotypes -- sea slater, mosasaur, as examples -- and harmoniously, with mental equilibrium. And it wasn't the first time I confirmed Harris's hawk only to feel like it was just off. The problem was the species, and this past August when I really truly accepted being a polytherian instead of trying to reduce reuse recycle with my theriotypes constantly and force myself down to three or four like I was shaving down a wood sculpture, which meant I accepted being a red-tail too (after so long too! Almost seven years), I was suddenly so much more focused on being a red-tail than I ever was on being a Harris's hawk. I just didn't feel like Harris's was important. It was like having a textbook that I loved reading, but then one day I got a shiny newer, updated version, and pretending like the old version was still my favorite had no point, because it was outdated and wasn't accurate.
Anyway, with all that being said, I think I have narrowed down my red-tailed species, which frankly feels more significant to me than being a Harris's hawk at all did. I see myself most in a paler color morph, but not completely white like a leucistic. I am drawn to both central northern American habitats like those in Alberta or Wyoming, and south western American desert habitats like places in Arizona and New Mexico. One of the reasons for clinging to Harris's hawk was that I felt so strongly about being a desert hawk, but felt like I must be a red-tail that lived in greener areas. I did not consider the possibility of a migratory subspecies that winters in the Sonoran.
May I introduce the Krider's hawk, Buteo jamaicensis kriderii, my specific subspecies. While much lighter in color than most red-tails, I am actually a particularly dark-colored individual of this subspecies. I see myself so gracefully in these photos.
I feel so at peace with this. I'm not a Harris's hawk, and more importantly, what makes this not like the last few times I de-confirmed Harris's hawk, I know what I am. I can send this piece of my personal history off to sea, finally satisfied with its closure.

Robert Foulk was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on May 5, 1908. He attended the University of Pennsylvania as an architecture student but became interested in theatre and by the age of 23 had made his Broadway debut in 1931. He did six plays on Broadway up until 1939, when he moved to Hollywood.
His first job in Hollywood was not on screen, but as a dialog director for Warner Brothers, where he worked on ten films (including The Maltese Falcon) before making his feature film acting debut in Road House (1948) starring Ida Lupino. In it, he played a policeman (uncredited), something he would do countless times again in the future.
In June 1951, he made his television debut in an episode of “Racket Squad”. Television would keep him busy for the rest of his life.
His first job for Desilu was in April 1953, on Desilu’s “Cavalcade of America” anthology series. He would do six more episodes through November 1956.
In January and May 1956, Foulk did two episodes of Desilu’s hit sitcom “December Bride.”
In 1956 he also did two episodes of Desilu’s co-production of “The Adventures of Jim Bowie”.
In 1956 and early 1957, he did two episodes of Desilu’s “The Sheriff of Cochise.” In addition to law enforcement, westerns were keeping him busy.
Foulk also did three episodes of Desilu’s “The Texan” in from 1958 to 1960.
Not strictly a western, he was also seen in 1960 episode of Desilu’s “Guestward Ho!”
LUCY (to a Policeman): “Oh, good grief, no. Don’t get a policeman. You know how nosy they are, always asking those foolish questions and then, instead of helping, after you’ve gone through all the trouble of explaining for half an hour, all they do is just mess things up. Don’t get a policeman!”
He had been playing policemen for “The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show” so it was natural to cast him as the Cop on the Brooklyn subway platform on “I Love Lucy” in “Lucy and The Loving Cup” (ILL S6;E12), filmed on November 1, 1956, but first aired on January 7, 1957.
After “I Love Lucy” Foulk did two episodes of their copter series “Whirlybirds” in 1957 and 1958.
On Desilu’s “The Real McCoys” he played five different characters in five appearances between 1959 and 1963.
He also did a single episode of their mega-hit “The Untouchables" in 1961. He played a Sheriff (uncredited) in “The Big Train - Part 2″.
From Brooklyn to Beverly Hills, Foulk played an undercover policeman in “Lucy Goes to a Hollywood Premiere” (TLS S4;E20) on February 7, 1966. He gives Mr. Mooney a hard time for hustling Hollywood maps to the stars homes.
He returned to work for Lucille Ball again, this time with Lucille Ball Productions, in “Lucy and the Raffle” (HL S3;E19) on January 18, 1971, the first of his six appearances on “Here’s Lucy.” He played a government clerk who gives Lucy a hard time when she seeks a permit for her raffle.
The very next week he was back as one of Harry’s poker pals (with Frank J. Scannell) in “Lucy’s House Guest, Harry” (HL S3;20) on January 25, 1971. Those are small kegs of beer for such a large man!
Foulk returns for a third week in a row (virtually unheard of with Lucy) to play the janitor in the building where Carter’s Unique Employment Agency rents space. The episode was titled “Lucy and Aladdin’s Lamp” (HL S3;E21) and it aired on February 1, 1971).
He’s back in blue for “Lucy and Mannix Are Held Hostage” (HL S4;E4) on October 4, 1971. Although it is a new season, only six new episodes had passed since his previous appearance.
It had been more than a year, but he kept his uniform on for “The Case of the Reckless Wheelchair Driver” (HL S5;E6) on October 16, 1972.
Foulk looked a bit different for his final appearance with Lucille Ball in “The Big Game” (HL S6;E2) on September 17, 1973, where he dons a beard as a football fan who can’t score a ticket for ‘the big game.’ When Lucy tries to sell him some scalped tickets, he thinks she is trying to sell herself!
Foulk’s final screen role was playing an old sea captain in the Disney film Pete’s Dragon in 1977.
In the 1930s, Foulk married actress Alice Frost. In 1947, he married Barbara Slater. They remained married until his death in 1989 at age 80.

I saw one of my favorite beach organisms today -- the Western sea slater, Ligia occidentalis. These furtive scavengers inhabit the high tide line, darting between rock crevices, their sharp claws providing easy purchase on the rough sandstone cliffs at Salt Point State Park in Sonoma County, California. Large, well-developed eyes offer a wide view of their surroundings, and long probing antennae help direct them to food. Ligia are basically just large, sporty, all-terrain woodlice, only slightly less divorced from the sea than their inland relatives. They must regularly wet their gills with seawater -- wicking it up from rock pools with their long tails -- but are otherwise fully terrestrial, and will quickly drown if submerged. They spend their entire lives among the rocks and cliffs of the splash zone.

Choppy seas ahead for Kelly Slater and other athletes unvaccinated against Covid-19 | Surfing | The Guardian
The World Surf League has recently warned surfers that remaining unvaccinated ahead of the 2022 season would pose “significant challenges” and may see them prohibited from “entering certain countries if they are not fully vaccinated”. At the top of that list is Australia, where the WSL is expected to head in April for events at Bells Beach in Victoria and the Margaret River in Western Australia.…
A family business dating back to 1897, the Jade Palace Resorts and Hotels has been a favourite luxurious hotelier for over 123 years now. Passed on from generation to generation, from the eldest child to their eldest, Ranveer Chopra has been running the business for the past 30 years since the age of 46. Now at 76 years old, Mr. Chopra has officially retired and has passed the reigns over to his only child, Avery Oliveira (née Chopra).
Growing up, she had been trained through the process of one day running one of the many Chopra family businesses while also being encouraged to explore other career options as well. Along with also being a best-selling author, Mrs. Oliveira is also a family-woman, being the wife of Monroe Oliveira and the mother of Mars Slater. She has also spoken up on her past job experiences, which have included being a barista, a book shop cashier, and as a performer at a strip club.
In July of 2020, Avery Oliveira has started a new branch to the company. Introducing Oasis Aqualounge and Love Hotel, the sister business is mainly located throughout North America, Western Europe (such as Ireland, Scotland, England, Portugal, Spain, and France), and in Japan. Her goal is to expand it to the same great lengths as the Jade Palace’s in the future.

We trawl eBay twice a week to find the best menswear auctions. For a third roundup, along with a list of each week’s best sales, subscribe to our Inside Track.
Yesterday, Jesse found this belted field jacket from Nigel Cabourn. It’s from Cabourn’s Utility line, which was a more affordable collection he designed for Debenhams (a British department store). The quality probably isn’t as good as Cabourn’s mainline, but you can’t really go wrong with an all cotton field jacket.
To dig up more menswear gems, try using our customized eBay search links. We’ve made them so you can quickly hone-in on high-end suits, good suits, high-quality shirts and fine footwear.

Overconsumption in the fashion industry: effects upon environment, consumer and manufacture.
Lily Baker
Word count: 1898
Forward
This research paper will review overconsumption in the fashion and textile industry via three distinct lenses: environmental, consumer and manufacture. It will outline the broad cumulative concerns that surround the way fashion is and has been consumed in contemporary Western society, before distilling these via a fine-grained discussion of how such concerns relate to each lens. Upon this, it will explore a brief analysis of the root causes of such concerns, alongside the challenges and consequences of this for the fashion industry. Finally, it will conclude with a proposal regarding where further research is needed for the fashion industry to progress towards addressing the concerns surrounding overconsumption, in a sustainable manner.
The issue
As global population continues to grow, so does the demand for garments. With population increases becoming “unprecedented” (Ezah et al, 2012), so too will demands for garments. A strain only aggravated by Western consumer trends, wherein social media drives an ever-changing cycle of trend transition and causes many consumers to dispose of unworn or once-worn items with “lightning speed” (Joy et al 2012).
The ‘fast’ fashion industry, profiteers from this ever-changing cycle. Manufacturers feeding trends by increasingly extending the number of ‘seasons’ (times when all garments in a store are replaced), in a calendar year.
“With the emergence of small collections of merchandise, fashion retailers are encouraging consumers to visit their stores more frequently with the idea of ‘Here Today, Gone Tomorrow’. This indicates a shorter life cycle and higher profit margins from the sale of fast selling merchandise” (Bhardwaj and Fairhurst, 2010).
This is especially problematic, as this growing fast fashion industry is a major world pollutant. Both in terms of landfill waste produced by this ever-changing cycle of fast fashion trend purchases, but also in terms of the initial production of such garments. Bhardwaj and Fairhurst (2010), illustrate this with reference to cotton production, where they note this as responsible for “Aral Sea desertification, water and soil contamination in Russia, and post 2000 in the Mackenzie River delta, in Queensland Australia” (Farrer, 2011). The Aral Sea was once the fourth largest lake in the world and due to the impact of irrigation canals which channel the water into cotton production, there has been a drastically concerning decrease in the size of the lake.
Root causes
There are two primary causes of the dangerous overconsumption caused by fast fashion and upon these, both manufacturers and consumers hold responsibility. As Joy et al note, even ecologically minded consumers will blind themselves to the harms of fast fashion and overconsumption. Consumers have an irresponsible hunger for “low-cost clothing collections that mimic current luxury fashion trends… Fast fashion helps sate deeply held desires among young consumers… for luxury fashion, even as it embodies unsustainability” (Joy et al, 2012).
But knowledge regarding the true sustainability of garments is often obscured from the consumer. Indeed, Slater 2003 notes it is not in the industry’s interests to reveal anything that could modify the behaviour patterns of their consumers, as such patterns generate both great revenue for brands and additionally, keep many within the industry professionally afloat. The industry, run be these very people, finding it hard to make decisions that will cost themselves and colleagues work. Farrer further emphasises the drive of profiteering, suggesting “Free trade and the generation of money-capitalism have become destructive to the ecosphere which has exquisite limits, unlike the generation of capital (profit) which is limitless” (Farrer, 2011).
The purpose of this paper is not to explore which cause holds greater responsibility, rather it is sufficient to acknowledge that both causes have and continue to contribute, to damages caused by overconsumption of cheap fashion.
Environmental concerns
There are a multitude of environmental concerns which embroil the fast fashion industry. Below, we will discuss two examples which, as a microcosm, represent the even broader concerns held by contemporary researchers.
A primary concern is the vast amounts of textile waste which is being produced as a result of this industry. Large amounts of clothing, much of which is working and wearable, is ending up in landfill each year. The Waste and Resources Action Plan estimates that £140 million of clothing goes into landfill each year in the UK alone. When these items end up in landfill, the toxic chemicals used to produce the vibrant colours and prints, can leach into the ground and rivers which ends up in the land being degraded and potential water sources being compromised. Cases are documented of fish and other aquatic animals being harmed due such textile waste.
A further issue caused by fast fashion is due to the large production of polyester you will find it in most homes. When polyester is washed, microfibres shred from the material and easily slip through the sewage system where they ultimately end up in the ocean. Here, they affect rivers and marine life by upsetting delicate ecosystems.
With natural sources being only finite, there is only so long that society and indeed our planet can support such overconsumption. Yet, there are lots of changes that can be made and have been proven to be a lot more sustainable. For instance, switching to more natural fibres that will require much less land and water such a hemp, nettle and flax. In future research I will seek to explore these alternate options.
Consumer Concerns
Upon fast fashion and fast trend changes, especially in contemporary Western society, clothes shopping has become less of a luxury pursuit. Before fast fashion permeated high streets, buying new clothes was only really affordable for the wealthier middle and upper classes. Clothes weren’t made in bulk to fill racks within shops, people would have their local tailor who would make and design clothes to fit the individual.
Now that new clothes are so accessible to people of all class, shopping experiences have revolutionised, especially with regards to the role modern technology plays in consumption. Especially as shops become increasingly overcrowded and people are increasingly able to shop online, from the comfort of their home; the ease and temptation of cheap, fast fashion is difficult for many consumers to ignore. “Although consumers are worried about the future of resources, they do not take their purchasing decisions regarding the problem. Instead, their decision is driven by design, quality and price” (Muslu, 2012). Moreover, with such clothing being so cheap it allows consumers to have fast turnovers of garments and thus, have a refreshed wardrobe even multiple times a year. Although there has been some development within searching for new materials which are more sustainable there hasn’t been enough development with these materials in terms of style and price which makes it harder for the consumer to buy more sustainably. Especially since, as Muslu notes, “eco or ethical clothing has a ‘high priced null designs’ image from the customers’ perception” (Muslu, 2012). Ultimately if brands are to address concerns over sustainability, they must find a way to design stylish clothes at affordable prices, whilst using more sustainable materials. “. The fashion customer is hungry for goods, yet needs to feel absolved from the responsibility from the constant refreshing of their wardrobe” (Farrer 2012).
Manufacture concerns
The process of garment manufacture is very complex and big brands that produce large amounts of stock want to be able to keep their costs down. However often, unfortunately, this is done so through unfair trade. For years the media has been showing the effects the fast fashion industry has on unfair trade and bad working conditions. Issues which arise from companies wanting to find factories that will make garments for them at the cheapest cost price. “Cheaper goods mean more consumption, which in turn means cheaper goods, which means more consumption” (Farrer 2012). Consequently, working conditions in factories as well as wage are affected. An issue still yet to be resolved even after years after it was acknowledged by both mainstream media and Western consumers. With the ever-changing demands of clothing, the process of items being made has sped up, allowing garments of poor quality to be sold cheaply across the world. The fashion industry is a highly competitive market, with all brands wanting to design and curate the latest trends. Often, in fast fashion, larger brands can dominate due to their fast turnover amounts which brings them in a lot of revenue. This it makes it harder for smaller and more sustainable companies to compete and keep up with consumer demands.
Challenges
There are several key challenges which face the fashion industry with respect to addressing this issue of overconsumption. The first is the environmental issue of sustainability. Companies need to find a more sustainable way of producing fashion and textile where its causing less damage to our eco-system, they need to find new ways of dying materials so that less toxic chemicals are used, using materials that use less water within the production and finding ways of reusing materials so that less ends up in landfill. “Current industry standards for dyeing woollen textiles use high temperatures and long processing times to aid dye diffusion. The consumption of water, energy and chemicals used in dyeing and finishing processes have been identified as key challenges to sustainability within the textile industry” (Morgan et al, 2015).
The second challenge faced by the fashion industry is producing items to fit the consumer, people are now used to being able to buy clothes cheaply and changing consumer habits will be highly challenging. Here, the industry needs to find a way to produce clothes sustainably, but also at a low cost and with designs that keep up with the ever-changing trends which are so often social media driven, in order to fit consumer criteria. Finally, the fashion industry needs to place greater focus upon creating better working conditions with fairer wages. This is not only ethically necessary in order that the fashion industry can hold itself as moral, but also will consequentially allow smaller and more sustainable brands to be given a greater fighting chance in the market. The difficulty here, however, will be persuading the large manufacturers to enact such changes; especially as these are likely to decrease revenue and employment in such firms.
Consequences/conclusions
With these challenges and the dramatic current impact of overconsumption on the environment, consumer and manufacturing processes of garments; the fashion industry must keep the further research into textiles in mind if it is to achieve a truly sustainable future. It will need to put more money into research and development of innovative fabrics and designs. This, it seems, will be the greatest chance the industry has of finding new ways of designing materials so that less toxic chemicals are used and less waste is produced. Especially where the main concern for manufacturers will be to carry on crafting products which will be sought after by the consumers and thus generate revenue.
Further Research
Based on my conclusions in this paper, I would like to research further the changes that fashion companies are making to look towards a more sustainable future. Are these changes sufficient to achieve true sustainability?
Furthermore, I would investigate the growing sentiment that information on how unsustainable the fashion industry really is, especially with respect to fast fashion, is not adequately or responsibly relayed to the consumer. How can a consumer make a true ‘choice’ about the ethicality of their fashion consumption, when they are ignorant of the implications of their very consumption?

The Great Tales of Middle-earth: Children of Húrin, Beren and Lúthien, and The Fall of Gondolin – J. R. R. Tolkien
Just in time for holiday gift-giving, The Great Tales of Middle-earth is a beautiful boxed set of the most recently published novels of Middle-earth: Children of Húrin, Beren and Lúthien, and The Fall of Gondolin, packaged together for the first time.
The Children of Húrin – Within the shadow of the fear of Angband, and the war waged by Morgoth against the Elves, the fates of Túrin and his sister Niënor will be tragically entwined. Their brief and passionate lives are dominated by the elemental hatred that Morgoth bears them as the children of Húrin, the man who dared to defy him to his face. Against them Morgoth sends his most formidable servant, Glaurung, a powerful spirit in the form of a huge wingless dragon of fire, in an attempt to fulfil the curse of Morgoth, and destroy the children of Húrin.
Beren and Lúthien – The epic tale of Beren and Lúthien became an essential element in the evolution of The Silmarillion, the myths and legends of J.R.R. Tolkien’s First Age of the World. Always key to the story is the fate that shadowed their love: Beren was a mortal man, Lúthien an immortal Elf. Her father, a great Elvish lord, imposed on Beren an impossible task before he might wed Lúthien: to rob the greatest of all evil beings, Melkor, of a Silmaril.
The Fall of Gondolin – In the Tale of The Fall of Gondolin are two of the greatest powers in the world. There is Morgoth of the uttermost evil, unseen in this story but ruling over a vast military power from his fortress of Angband. Deeply opposed to Morgoth is Ulmo, second in might only to Manwë, chief of the Valar: he is called the Lord of Waters, of all seas, lakes, and rivers under the sky. But he works in secret in Middle-earth to support the Noldor, the kindred of the Elves among whom were numbered Húrin and Túrin Turambar. Central to this enmity of the gods is the city of Gondolin, beautiful but undiscoverable.

But as events unfurl, the lines between demon and master become blurred, and Tarrik realizes that Ren is not what she seems. To prevent utter devastation, Tarrik may have to surrender what he values most: a chance at redemption and an end to his exile.
The ‘Stan – David Axe, Kevin Knodell, and Blue Delliquanti
The ‘Stan is a collection of short comics about America’s longest war. Individual stories highlight different perspectives—one through the eyes of a Taliban ambassador and others through the eyes of Afghan and U.S. Army soldiers—but every account highlights the human element of war. The tales in this book—based on reporting by David Axe and Kevin Knodell and drawn by artist Blue Delliquanti—are all true and took place in roughly the first decade of the U.S. military intervention in Afghanistan. While the stories are from the recent past, The ‘Stan is still very much about Afghanistan’s and America’s present—and likely their future.
“Based on on-the-ground reporting by Knodell and Axe, this realistic view of an ongoing conflict, rendered in a casual yet powerful voice, not only acts as a necessary record of experiences and sacrifice but as a humble thanks to all those who have lived–or are still living–through them.”–Publishers Weekly
