Dutch Historian Finds Medieval Treasure Trove
A Dutch historian found unique 1,000-year-old medieval golden treasure, consisting of four golden ear pendants, two strips of gold leaf and 39 silver coins, the Dutch National Museum of Antiquities (Rijksmuseum van Oudheden) announced on Thursday.
Lorenzo Ruijter, 27, who told Reuters he has been treasure hunting since he was 10, discovered the treasure in 2021 in the small northern city of Hoogwoud, using a metal detector.
"It was very special discovering something this valuable, I can't really describe it. I never expected to discover anything like this," Ruijter said, adding that it was hard to keep it a secret for two years.
But experts of the National Museum of Antiquities needed the time to clean, investigate and date the treasure's objects and have now found that the most recent coin by that time the jewelry was already two centuries old, the museum said, adding it must already have been "an expensive and cherished possession."
"Golden jewelry from the High Middle Ages is extremely rare in the Netherlands," the museum also said.
While it will remain a mystery why exactly the treasure was buried, the museum pointed out there was a war raging between Dutch regions West Friesland and Holland in the middle of the 13th century, with Hoogwoud being the epicenter, can be dated back to around 1250, which made them assume the treasure was buried then.
Ruijter said it is possible someone powerful at the time buried the valuable objects as a way to protect them and hopefully dig them up once it was safe again.
Given its archaeological significance, the treasure was given as a loan to the museum which will display it, but it will remain the official property of finder Lorenzo Ruijter.

The flag of the province of Friesland or Frisian flag (West Frisian: Fryske Flagge; Dutch: Friese vlag), is the official flag of the Netherlands province of Friesland. It consists of four blue and three white diagonal stripes; in the white stripes are a total of seven red pompeblêden, leaves of the yellow water-lily, that may resemble hearts, but according to the official instructions "should not be heart-shaped". The jerseys of the football club SC Heerenveen and the Blauhúster Dakkapel [fy] are modeled after this flag. (Wikipedia)

IN MEMORIAM:
Wilhelminus Otto Petrus Panter IEdéfix.
Geboren: 7 of 9 juli 2007, Broekop Langedijk, Noord-Holland.
Overleden: 23 oktober 2023, Hoorn, West-Friesland.
Grootmoeder: Mariska Steltenpool.
Beste vriend: Wenzel Fanvliet.
Lievelingskleur/eten: Muisgrijs.
Niemand noemde hem poes, katachtige of Wopperik. Genderaliseren was men/hen/hun/hemsie vreemd.
Not done. Wop was autonoom.

Is there a real world equivalent accent that your OCs have? (Like even though Ireland might not exist in your world they still have something that could be considered or inspired by a Irish accent, for example)
another great question!!
for each of my ocs, i retrieve cultural inspiration from somewhere on earth. Alberich and Spera Amadea have the tightest influence!
Alberich Wiersma - I was inspired by Germanic languages and decided on the name Alberich, which originates from Old High German. Wiersma is a surname of West Frisian origin. West Frisian is a long-living language of the Dutch province, Friesland. Therefore, I picture Alberich with a strong German accent.
Spera Amadea Millefiori - Spera’s name is something I invented myself. This character is my way of portraying subtle Italian culture, and I was thinking of Italian words I could transform into a name fit for a elegant water nymph. Spera originates from the verb Sperare (to hope) and is the conjugation of he/she/it hopes. Amadea came from me always having liked the name ‘Amadeus’ - the Italian reference here is that Amadeus is the name of a well-known Italian tv-presenter - and I morphed into a Italian feminine sounding name. Turns out - it is actually an Italian / Latin name! Millefiori is the name of my favourite honey (i’m a big fan of honey). Miele di Millefiori means Wildflower Honey, which seems very fitting for a nymph. Anyway, I definitely picture Spera with a subtle italian accent, specifically a Southern-Italian accent.
- Are there any OCs from either Devil & Dove or your other projects that have some sort of influence like this?

For Anon: some 30000 foot view facts
A lot of these are going to be kinda obvious but I hope they help!
In reference to the central Germanics there were the Ignaevones, the Herminones, and the Istaevones.
They were (from what Tacitus said) defended from the 3 sons of Mannus; who was a son of the earth god Tuisto.
Despite the origin of the Germanic peoples being about the 5th century BCE they didn't leave Scandinavia until the 2nd century BCE.
The line between Germanic and Celtic really wasn't as cut and dry as the Romans made it out to be. And the Rhine was not as much a hard border as the Romans made it out to be.
The first tribe to convert to Christianity as a whole were the Franks, though the first Germanics to convert were probably Goths individually.
The tribes crossing the Rhine were NOT invading armies. There's far more evidence of natural disasters/other people groups that pushed families west in desperation.
The Allfather was their top guy as well. (Odin/Woden/Wotan was everyone's top guy tbh)
There have been archeological finds of Thor's hammer pendants, like the ones associated with Vikings, in Lower Saxony and Friesland. The belief being they became more popular to wear after the franks started pushing for the other tribes to convert, and were possibly common in Germany and The Netherlands before they were in Scandinavia.
Speaking of (and this is more opinion): the Franks weren't that important until they started being Jerks to everyone else :\
Things were scheduled intertribal meetings, they were used for legislative purposes, but also for socializing and trading. They were presided over by a Lawspeaker, it was an official office in Scandinavia but among the central Germanic tribes would have probably just been an elder of the tribe.

Enkhuizen is known as the 'Herring City' because of its past as a center for the herring fishing industry. The city is an important tourist center partly because of the extensive and well-preserved historic center. Enkhuizen is a city and municipality in the West-Friesland region, in the Dutch province of North Holland. The municipality is located on both the Markermeer and the IJsselmeer and about an hour away from Amsterdam

14, 16, and 20 for mun asks :D
Multimuse asks
14. Which muse is the most demanding?
If we're taking this literally, the answer is easy: Ruben (Holland, the Original™). Whatever he wants, he will demand. In a way he also often demands my thoughts and attention.
Not so literally speaking, I think it would be Hannes (Noord-Brabant). I love him to bits, but he just demands so much energy from me, haha!
16. Do your moods effect which muse you write?
Oh, absolutely. Not by a lot honestly, but if I am upset I tend to not be able to write or draw bubbly muses. But when I'm bouncy, all the more! When I'm cranky, I write either the teenage ones or just Tim xD
20. Do you have any new muses you’re thinking about taking up?
I've dabbled in writing Arthur, actually! Every now and then I do wonder whether I should have him as a muse, but then I remember how unhinged some people can get about him if your headcanons don't align with theirs xD And trust me, my interpretation is not going to be rose coloured, even though I love that character.
Aside from canon characters, I've thought about fleshing out my West-Friesland OC (in North Holland) as well as my Ommelanden OC (in Groningen). I definitely need to read more into the histories of those regions though 🤔
