The Lion Tower Of London
The Lion Tower of London, a forerunner of @zlslondonzoo
Founded in April 1826, the Zoological Society of London brought to fruition the dream of Sir Stamford Raffles, Humphry Davy, and Joseph Banks, to create a zoological collection that would not only “interest and amuse the public” but also rival that of the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. A plot of land was purchased from the Crown in Regent’s Park, animal houses were constructed, and on April 27,…

Round Three: Cryptogyps vs Heracles
Cryptogyps lacertosus
Tumblr media
Artwork by @otussketching, written by @zygodactylus
Name Meaning: Powerful Hidden Vulture
Time: 770,000 to 55,000 years ago (Chibanian to Tarantian stage of the Pleistocene epoch, Quaternary period)
Location: Throughout Australia, including Kalamurina, the Wellington Caves, and the Nullarbor Plain
Today, there are no vultures in Australia. In fact, until recently, it seemed fairly clear that no vultures had lived in Australia - but now, we know they did! Originally thought to be an eagle, Cryptogyps was on the small size for a vulture, only bigger than the living Hooded Vulture - though it was about the size of the wedge-tailed eagle. However, it was proportioned similarly to other vultures, and between that and its great range across the entirety of Australia, it is logical to conclude that it lived similarly to other vultures, feeding primarily on carrion and going great distances to find it. It did not have the right musculature to be an active hunter like eagles and hawks. As such, Cryptogyps was a vital part of its environment, reducing the spread of disease and recycling nutrients and energy back into the food web like vultures today. Cryptogyps lived alongside a wide variety of weird megafuana present in Australia during the last ice age, including marsupial lions, giant demon-ducks (mihirungs), giant hippo-sized wombats, sheep-sized and fossorial echidnas, short-faced kangaroos, giant koalas, thylacines, giant maleefowls, huge monitor lizards, large crocodilians, and giant pythons - as well as cassowaries, regular kangaroos, emus, and other large animals that remain today. It was a weird place of which Cryptogyps was a small and important part, and would have been a regular sight in the skies to the first Indigenous Australians to settle on the continent!
Heracles inexpectatus
Tumblr media
Artwork by @otussketching, written by @zygodactylus
Name Meaning: Unexpected Herculean Parrot
Time: 16 to 19 million years ago (Burdigalian stage of the Miocene epoch, Neogene period)
Location: St. Bathans Fauna, Bannockburn Formation, Aotearoa
Heracles was a truly alarmingly large parrot, related to modern day Kea, Kaka, and Kakapo, known from the fantastic avifauna of St Bathans. Standing more than two feet tall and weighing about fifteen pounds, this animal was much larger than any expected from the St Bathans fauna, which represented the initial colonization of Aotearoa (Zealandia) after it returned above sea level. Heracles is also the largest known species of parrot, ever. It was presumably flightless, though it is uncertain if it was nocturnal like its living relative the Kakapo. Its exact ecology is still uncertain, given the material known from Heracles is limited and its living relatives have very disparate ecologies, though it is possible it was omnivorous similar to the Kea and Kaka today. The St Bathans fauna lived in a freshwater lake system, in a subtropical emergent rainforest. Separated from land bridges, the fauna was dominated by birds, with early relatives of the Kiwi, New Zealand Wrens, Adzebills, and Wedge-Tailed eagles found in the fauna, as well as somewhat modern looking Moas. Smaller flamingos, large fruit pigeons, and a huge variety of geese and other waterfowl are known. In addition, frogs, tuataras, other lizards, crocodilians, turtles, and many different types of fish are known from this fascinating ecosystem.

Ok here's stuff I like about AA :]
1-1
I love Larry he's very silly
An awesome intro to the game
I love the thing with the clock being 9 hours behind rather than 3 hours ahead, that was clever
Sahwit is a really good last name too
The sound effect for Payne saying objection is really silly and I love it
1-2
Absolutely excellent witnesses
I love how Redd basically says "yeah I killed Mia but I have leverage on everyone, it's impossible to get me in prison"
Mia getting killed this early is also a really horrible and simultaneously fun gut punch
1-3
My mind is blanking cause I had stuff going on while playing this one
I like how frustrated Edgeworth got with Cody
Will Powers is a super fun character
1-4
WHAT AN EXCELLENT ENDING CASE
Lotta is my favorite witness and I love her
I love the stupidly complex "kill Hammond at 23:50 then shoot two bullets into the water at 00:15 and jump in so Edgeworth will be confused" stuff
Von Karma 1 is absolutely terrifying and I hate him. Excellent villain
The parrot is also in my top favorite witnesses
Larry made an appearance too, good for him :3
I like the picture at the end
1-5
What a headache. It was really frustrating at the beginning but after the first trial it started getting really fun
Words can't describe how much I love Gant, he's the main inspiration for the antagonist in a new story I'm working on
I love how he's not even really upset when he gets caught, he's just like "oh well, I had a good run"
Also when Edgeworth gets too curious about wtf is going on and just wants the truth, that's great too
Wasn't fond of Angel at first but she grew on me and she's poggers
Same for Marshall but I don't like him as much as angel
I love that 1-4 and 1-5 both had stuff about old cases, it makes the writing feel a lot richer
Lana's design is awesome. She's got a lesbian face. Cannot elaborate.
Ema is alright too. I gave her a lotta crap but she's silly. Definitely not fair to compare her to Maya
I still think it's funny that Neil happened to look like Partitio
Gumshoe also acted very silly throughout the entire case
Meekins was neat too
I like that entire thing about Edgeworth unknowingly helping Gant with Goodman's murder by driving Goodman to the prosecutor's office
2-1
Maggey is SO silly
Another friend told me Wellington was awesome before I even got to JFA so I was super excited to encounter him. Was not disappointed
PAYNE MENTION!!!! I think Payne is silly too, by no means is he a good character but you get a good chuckle out of him. My sister and I also give him a really stupid voice when we play together
Dustin prince is a pretty good name too
I also remember thinking he looked super friendly
I love Wellington mistaking the glove for bananas
2-2
Mimi was such an awesome character, I like the stuff about her stealing her sister's identity
Mimi is so pretty
Pearl is silly and deserves a cup of hot chocolate the size of her forehead /pos
I liked the twist of Morgan wanting Maya to go to prison so she could become the next village head, it's a fun type of motivation.
I watched the opening cutscene a second time a few hours after finishing it because my sister started it and it's a very fun watch the second time
The English car thing was very fun and silly to
2-3
The tiger and lion sprites were so unnecessarily detailed in a good way
I ended up somewhat liking Moe
Max is silly, I like how he's just a country bumpkin but made a name for himself and is so confident
It's also worth noting that the friend that liked Wellington also said Max is her wife
Interesting conclusion and I almost started 2-4 but remembered I have to get up early tomorrow
nice to hear! but again, don’t force yourself to enjoy something you don’t for my sake, you can be honest with me I’ll understand
it is good to hear some of this though :]
I will note that morgan’s motives are more so related to her wanting big things for her daughter, pearl… but… you’ll understand more come aa3 ;>

17 June 2015 | Britain's Prince Charles, Prince of Wales and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall are shown around by The Duke of Wellington during their visit of the Lion Mound in Waterloo, Belgium. The farm is where British and allied forces successfully held off Napoleon's army during the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. Around 5000 historical re-enactors from around the world will take part in three days of events from June 18, 2015 to mark the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo. The 1815 battle saw the overthrow of Napoleon Bonaparte and the restoration of Louis XVIII to the French throne. (c) Arthur Edwards - WPA Pool/Getty Images

Brickclub 4.13.2 ‘Paris--An Owl’s-Eye View‘
Everything would have to be decided the next day, the triumph on this side or that one, the insurrection a revolution or a blunder.
Or, in other words--one day more.
This chapter is about the darkness we’ve already seen Marius moving through. Hugo often proceeds from the broad perspective to the narrow, but this time we’re going the other way.
Given the negative significance of darkness in this book, it’s interesting that the emeute is so heavily associated with it. We’ll see more light later--much more--but Gavroche will still be associated with this extinguishing of candles.
“Owl’s-eye view” is interesting, too. It’s like a bird’s-eye view of course, in that we’re high up and looking down. And it’s night, and owls are a night bird..... but we’ve met owls before. They’re not a positive animal association in this text: they’re something that hates light and is blinded by it. Valjean was compared to an owl blinded by the bishop’s virtue, and later, ambiguously, as an owl to Cosette’s wren. Thenardier is an owl fearing the light of investigation after he takes Valjean’s money in exchange for Cosette. Wellington is “an old owl” when he loses to Napolion earlier in N’s career, Gillenormand calls Marius an owl when he’s angry about him going off to die, Javert is an owl... it’s not great.
(Side note: the French uses both hibou and chouette for owl at different points; I *think* they’re being used similarly--this chapter uses both. A quick google search has informed me that hiboux are horned/eared owls and chouettes are owls without whatever you want to call the little head-tufts. I can’t help but feel Duolingo has misled me.)
Anyway, it’s possible that in getting an owl’s-eye view of Paris we’re getting a view that’s ignorant or biased in some way, or refusing to look at the light, even though plenty of light exists. It’s a grim, dark look at what the insurgents are doing. It’s also possible that the insurgents themselves are being called owls for preferring the darkness.
At nightfall, every window where a candle was lit had received a bullet. The light was extinguished, sometimes the inhabitant killed. Thus nothing stirred.
This is the part that’s striking me as really strange. We’ve literally just summarily executed Le Cabuc for doing something like this?? Hugo’s point that guerrilla tactics are aided by shadows sounds plausible, but they’re also surely aided by the goodwill of the people in the neighboring houses, as they have been in the riots and revolutions before this. Shooting them (rather than, say, throwing stones?) seems like such a needlessly aggressive choice.
And, earlier, the insurgents are called “police”????
That quote:
The invisible police of the uprising watched everywhere and maintained order, that is to say, night. To drown the paucity of their number in a vast obscurity and to multi ply each combatant by the possibilities that obscurity contains are the necessary tactics of insurrection.
The invisible police really do seem to be the insurgents at least the way FMA translated it?
What is Happening here?
(Also, I have no idea whether this lightlessness was true of 1832, but it wasn’t universal to barricades. I remember reading about the barricade in November of 1827 in the Rue Saint-Denis where insurgents were calling for more light, and hurling stones at unlit houses so they’d light more lamps and candles to let the insurgents see what they were doing.)
The chapter ends with a note that’s, if not positive, definitely more positive than the rest of this chapter:
A fearful, sacred voice, composed of the roaring brute and the speech of God, which terrifies the feeble and warns the wise, which comes at the same time from below like the voice of the lion and from above like the voice of thunder.
So, despite the darkness, there’s a sacred reason for all that’s happening. Though it’s also one of our more almost negative uses of lions--though maybe only in comparison to the voice of God.
I’m not totally sure what to make of this chapter, tbh. I guess we’ll see where Hugo takes it.

Strike-Walk #1
Simpson's-in-the-Strand to Denmark Street
The Silkworm, chapter 37
Strike set out for his office beneath a sky of dirty silver, his feet moving with difficulty through the rapidly accumulating snow.
This walk, which "would take a fit and unimpaired adult perhaps a quarter of an hour" occurs after Strike's lunch with Jerry Waldegrave. Strike walks from their lunch venue - Simpson's-in-the-Strand to his Denmark Street office, and is pursued by Pippa Midgley.
Simpson's-in-the-Strand still exists, but its doors are sadly chained shut. Twitter suggests that the restaurant closed due to COVID in March 2020, and there are suggestions elsewhere online that it will be reopened, date yet to be confirmed. [1]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After spending "his entire week's food budget on a single meal" Strike lights a cigarette and walks eastwards down the Strand, turning north (left) into Wellington Street and passing "the fluted columns of The Lyceum Theatre" (which is currently showing The Lion King. [2])
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He thinks about the Quine murder case, and by the time the "scarlet facade of the Coach and Horses" comes into view, he's thirsty (really, mate? it's been like, two minutes since lunch). He makes himself resist going in, but of course I didn't, and can confirm it has gleaming brass beer pumps and convivial clientele.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is when he glances longingly towards the Coach and Horses that he sees Pippa Midgley for the first time, "scurrying along the ... pavements behind him". It sounds as if they are on the same side of the road at this point, and this would be consistent with them both being on the east side of Wellington Street, the same side as the pub, walking north.
He keeps tabs on Pippa by looking at her reflection in windows and brass door plates, and there's no shortage of door plates that side of the street. So far so good.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We soon reach the junction with Russell Street where things get a bit more difficult. According to the book, as Strike crosses Russell Street, Pippa ducks into the Marquis of Anglesey.
The problem is, if you stand on the south side of Russell Street, looking north, the pub is in front of you on the other side of the road. But Pippa is supposed to be behind him, so either she has overtaken him at some stage, or he is on the west side of Wellington Street and she is on the east, in which case she might have drawn level with him as he waited to cross the road, (hence the need to dart into the pub so as to allow him to draw ahead again).
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, on the west side of Wellington Street, between the Coach and Horses and the Marquis of Anglesey, there's not a single brass plate to be reflected in (although there are some windows) and it seems unlikely he would be able to use reflections from brass plates on the other side of the road. Perhaps Strike crosses Russell Street diagonally, both E to W and S to N, and she catches up with him that way, while allowing him to use all the brass door furniture up to that point.

Saturday 12 May 1838
7 25
1 25
dull morning F58° at 8 am felt cold – put on knee-caps again (had I not worn them yesterday or Thursday) and worsted stockings – all ready to be off and breakfast and off to Waterloo at 9 ½ - Calêche took Oddy and George – had not room for Lion – the forest of Soignies in process of down cutting – sold by the ex-king a little before the revolution to the Bank of Brussels (said our Waterloo guide) and now selling off by the Bank, to be turned into agricultural land – jolting pavé all the way made A-‘s back of neck bad – alight at the village of Waterloo at 11 10 opposite the  little garden where the M. of Angleseys’ leg was buried – just go in and see the outside the building for which had afterwards to pay 0/50 – then our woman guide took us to the church and fetched the old man to let us in for which paid him 1/. the entrance end crowded with monuments to the English etc. etc. killed 16, 17 and 18 June 1815.  one monument to the memory of 24 officers and 375 non commissioned ditto and privates of the 70th Highlanders – the M. d’ Anglesey here 2 years ago, and dined in the room where his leg was cut off, and sent the people a portrait of himself – from the church to the little churchyard the English officers buried in the middle in the avenue of limes – at entrance end of it, Sir Alexander Gordon buried aid de camp to the duke of Wellington who never comes without going to his grave – Sir Alexander was in the act of speaking to or had just been speaking to the duke when the cannon ball took him off – M. [Mise], banker of Brussels, has a chateau at Waterloo, and is the principal proprietor – In returning went into a café, en haut, for which gave ½ fr. asked for sols for a franc the full change for which the woman was reluctant to give me till she heard what she was to have for herself – then got into the carriage at 12 again opposite La poste a neat looking Inn where the duke of Wellington had slept, and drove off to the village of St. Jean and alighted (did not go in) at an auberge at 12 ¼ - there our man guide joined us, and there commenced our little tour – the man was one of 3 servants at the farm of St. Jean (aetatis 17 at the time – the master se sauvait) – where so many of the wounded were – the house and farm buildings and court yard full – passed this for some distance and then direct to the montagne de Lion, the great tumulus erected 7 years afterwards on the spot where the prince of Orange was wounded (in the shoulder) – the whole height 200ft. from surface of ground to top of bronze lion weighing 1048lbs. cast by Cokerill of Liège – the apex of the tumulus 100ft. diameter – conspicuous from far – ascended to the top by steps cut out in side of the embanked earth and faced with wood – 5 minutes ascending and 35 minutes at the top – enjoying the fine prospect (charming day – nor hot nor cold, nor wind, nor dust) and conning over our plan of the battle bought at St. Jean village of where we left the carriage – got a thorough understanding of the different positions and then at 1 35 down again and off to Hougoumont thus written by the duke of W- in his despatch from La belle Alliance, instead of château de Goumont, an easy mistake now perpetuated by the celebrity of the written and the writing – an English officer who had fought in the battle (of no great appearance) was on the mountain with a party of ladies and gentlemen while we were there – but from what I overheard our guide seemed the better of the 2 – the proprietor of the quondam chateau de Goumont, M. de Goumont, is now living in the neighbourhood of Brussels? did the man say – government bought the place of him and leave it as was after the battle as a monument of the battle – good taste – the then outbuildings form the present farm-house – the chateau (the chapel and well house remain) was burnt down and all the wounded as many or [more]
SH:7/ML/E/21/0096
French than English perished in the flames – the French under Jerome Buonaparte and General Foy finding they could not take this key of our position, set it on fire – the wood then close in front of the garden that made it so strong, is now cut down and turned into common ground – the place was at the time exceedingly strong undercover of this wood – the French had no idea of the strength of this position – the duke of Wellington arrived from Brussels in the morning of the 17th and took up this position – the French did not arrive till evening – it rained the whole of the 16th and 17th Friday and Saturday night and day so that on the 18th many of the men fought up to their knees in water or mud – vide the account of the battle given by Sir Walter Scott in Pauls’ letters to his kinfolk – A- had been very poorly in the back of her neck and sickish perhaps from the rough pavé in coming but on leaving Hougoumont at 2 5 thought she could make the round by La belle Alliance (double distance) and off we set across the fields – merely looked at the house in passing slowly by – as we stood opposite it was the room on the left of the door where  the duke of Wellington and Blucher met in the evening of the 18th ‘se mutuellement saluant vainques’ according to the inscription over the door – La grange (the barn) adjoining this room was built after the battle – Napoleon who had rested there quite s’y reposait à midi, proceed with his imperial guard about 2/3 of the way to the 2 monuments (going from La belle alliance to St. Jean the left to Sir Alexander Gordon the right to Alten and his Hanoverians – close on each side the road to Nivelles) and seeing the battle lost wished to fall there with his guard, but Soult said ‘Sire les Anglais sont assez heureux’ and Napoleon turning his head round 3 times (said our guide) criait, sauve qui peut, and himself made the best of his way to Nivelles ........ and Paris – Did Soult thus add to his masters’ happiness or to his reputation? Marius sitting on the ruins of Carthage, and Napoleon at St. Helena!!! Our walk from Hougoumont to the carriage at the hameau (village) of St. Jean took us 1 5 hour till 3 10 – sat 10 minutes in the carriage till the horses were put to and off back again at 3 20 and alighted at Bellevue at 5 10 – the servants dined and so did we very comfortably – our dinner on the table in about ¼ hour – sat over it quietly – paid all – capital Inn – our apartment (n°99) really very spacious comfortable but somehow nor A- nor I had felt well at B- and were not sorry to be off – Off at 6 55 – of the 2 routes equally good, equally beautiful, and of the same length (taking the whole distance from B- to Louvain) said Mr. de Profts’ proxy , I chose the one I believe I went with Lady S- and Lady VC. in 1829, viz. by Tervuren (the other its by Cortenberg [Kortenberg]) and a beautiful drive it is of 2 postes tho’ the road is for the greater part like a green-sided fosse 8 or 9 ft. below the surface of the beech forest thro’ which it passes – at 7 ½ descend to goof white-washed village and steep ascent out of it, and at the top the road se bifurqué – the 2 roads meet – we keep straight or rather inclining left – the other road, right, and enter a fine beautiful perspective as of a long green aisle beech avenue which continues ½ hour (our 4 horses allant bon train) till 8 when in ten minutes we change horses at goodish little town of Tervuren – from there the postboy charitably drove us generally on the parterre – the 2 leaders fresh and spirited and A- nervous – passed 2 good handsome chateaux? country houses just out of the town – the avenue to Louvain chiefly of poplars – but the light had failed us long before our alighting at comfortable hotel de Suède at 9 ¾ - 2 very good bedrooms and  servants rooms for 8fr. – the servants supped – A- and I would take nothing – had the beds warmed – Oddy curled A-‘s hair as she lay on the sofa, and she was in bed (after taking the juice of an orange warmed with hot water) before 11 – I sat writing  out all but the 1st 6 or 7 lines of today till 12 5 according to my watch as I have gone by it today but the women of the house here said it was only 9 when we arrived instead of 9 ¾ - was she not wrong? she was expecting the last railway train from Brussels – 4 trains a day arrive here, - the last at 9 ½ pm. – very fine day – F58 ½° now at 12 10 tonight according to time as I have noted it during the day

Been a fine day fine day for writing.
Sometimes I write things on the side that I don't actually plan to use in the novel. I call them B-Sides, just little ficlets that sometimes helps me understand what's going on in the background.
This one was done to help me understand my antagonists a bit.
B-Side: For the Betterment of Mankind.
Adrian entered the office and closed the door, locking it to bar anyone from easily intruding.  Rush lifted an eyebrow at this, pausing his work and setting his pen atop it before folding his hands in front of him.
“Adrian, does something concern you?” he asked.
The singer sank into one of the chairs in front of Rush’s desk, arms draping over the armrests as he slouched into the cushions.  “He’s a handful.”
Rush hummed softly and rose from his chair, “I assume you mean our latest acquisition.  Too strong for you to handle?”
He walked to the wet bar, pulling out two cut glass tumblers to fill with amber bourbon from an unlabeled decanter.  Adrian waited until Rush offered one of them to him as he considered his reply.
He took a sip of bourbon first, “I can handle him, for now.  He’s raw, doesn't really understand what he is yet.  His mind is open to a little nudging.  I can steer him, plant a few suggestions in his brain, but he’s resistant. Making him forget that Italian kid is not happening.”
Rush nodded, drinking from his glass as he slowly meandered to the window and looked out at the manicured lawn.  “Given enough time, we can break him of that.”
“Yeah, that’d take months, though, a year. Maybe more,” the singer snorted, “I get the feeling you don’t want to waste that much time.”
“Do what you can to alleviate the situation,” Rush said over the rim of his glass, “But no, this is a minor concern.  We have others, more pressing.”
Adrian knocked back the rest of the bourbon, leaning forward to set the glass down on Rush’s desk, “What do you need from me?”
Rush inhaled, breathing in the drink in his hand.  The notes of smoke and spice, clove and pepper.  He sipped it delicately, exhaling a sigh, “The Ascendant has made her ruling. But one Watcher in particular has been needling her into reconsidering.  The boy needs to be bonded soon.  I need you to work your magic to make him pliable.  Amenable to it. And I need it done quickly.”
Adrian sat up, “Are you fucking kidding me? It took me six months to work Zakary to that point. And he’s far weaker than St. James.”
Rush turned toward him, “Are you saying you aren't up to the job, Adrian?”
Now Adrian was on his feet, anger radiating off of him, “I'm saying you’re asking for a goddamn miracle.”
Rush tapped the glass in his hands as he strode toward Adrian.  The singer’s shoulders slumped, even pressing back a heel in an attempt to delay the ever closing gap between them.
“He’s an ignorant boy,” Rush asserted, brushing some unseen bit of lint from Adrian’s collar, “A product of a terrible school system and a broken home life.  There is plenty of fodder for you to use to your advantage with him.  Spend time with him.  Shadow him.  Make him lean into you, trust you.  That should not take six months, Adrian.  He’s a lamb, not a lion.”
Adrian scratched at his cheek, sinking back into the chair in defeat, “You don’t get it. Lambs go to the slaughter easily because they don’t have wolves’ teeth.  That kid doesn’t just bite, he mauls if he’s upset.”
Rush chuckled, patting Adrian’s shoulder, “Then don’t upset him. Be his friend, his lover if you must.  But I need him ready and willing to submit to the bond soon.”
Adrian flicked his fingers in resignation, “A month, then.  I can probably have him mostly compliant by then.”
“Two weeks,” Rush countered, “I’ll give you two weeks.”
Adrian shook his head, sighing, “You’re certifiable, Rush.  Why on Earth are you in such a hurry?”
PIcking up Adrian’s glass from the desk, Wellington walked it back to the wet bar and refilled it, topping off his own.  “Do you know how old I am, Adrian?”
The singer shrugged, “I don’t know.  Fifty?”
“I was born in 1810,” Rush said as he handed the refilled glass back to Adrian.
The singer took it, fingers closing around it, but Rush didn’t let go right away, watching Adrian for a reaction.
“You’re… almost two hundred years old…”
Rush smiled, letting go once Adrian understood.  The singer immediately had a drink.  “Indeed.  I was born in New York, to a prominent family.  I Awakened while attending medical school.  To think, I would have been a rudimentary doctor had I not discovered a higher calling.”
Adrian smirked, “You’d also be long dead by now.”
That at least got a chuckle out of Rush.  He sipped his bourbon and sat on the edge of his desk, looking down at Adrian, “You would be surprised to know what kind of man I was back then.  It was a fine time to be Awakened in New York.  A city steadily growing into a metropolis.  I joined a society for the betterment of mankind. If you can believe that.”
“Hardly,” Adrian said from the mouth of his glass, tossing the rest of it back, “So what happened to make you decide the betterment of man wasn’t really in the cards?”
Rush stared down at him, ice blue eyes half lidded, his thoughts roaming around the past, “People disappoint.  Live long enough and you grow weary of it.  They vote against their best interests.  Allow themselves to be led like animals to the slaughter house.  Then lament the sledgehammer barreling down on their heads, oh woe.  Soon enough I realized that for man to live in peace, man must be stripped of his free will.  Too many choices are never healthy for any society.”
Adrian held onto his glass this time, bouncing it off the edge of his armrest, “And you’re the man to do that, hmm?”
“Once the Awakened establish themselves as more than underground shepherds of the Sleeping world, yes,” Rush replied, “And with that boy under my control, my plans finally come to fruition.”
“Two weeks is impossible,” Adrian said, “His will is stronger than you realize.”
Rush finished his bourbon finally, reaching to take Adrian’s glass from him, “Amelia will be returning soon, you’ll have help.”
Adrian shuddered at the mention of her name, “Seriously? I don’t need her interference.”
“Humor her,” Rush said as he set the empty tumblers back onto the wet bar, “She’s his mother, their reunion has the potential to addle him, draw him further into your web.”
“She’s convinced he’s a god, Rush.”
Rush stood in front of the wet bar one moment, then stood directly behind Adrian the next, his hand closing around the singer's throat tightly from behind.  Adrian gasped, reaching up to pry at Rush’s fingers to no avail.
“He is a god,” Rush whispered in the singer’s ear, leaning down just enough without easing his iron grip, “He is the Summer Solstice in the flesh.  You and Zakary are as false as the dawn before the sun has truly risen.  With St. James, the prophecy finally fulfills itself.  I can rid myself of excess baggage now.  Clear away my old experiments as yesterday’s trash. Or, you can remain useful to me.  Prepare the boy for bonding.  Do you understand?”
He eased up the pressure just enough to allow Adrian to respond, “Yes.”
Only then did he release the singer, watching him rub his throat to ease the ache.  “Good. Now run along, Adrian. You have work to do.”

Aviraptor vs Cryptogyps
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Factfiles:
Aviraptor longicrus
Tumblr media
Artwork by @otussketching, written by @zygodactylus
Name Meaning: Long-legged Bird Thief
Time: 30 to 31 million years ago (Rupelian stage of the Oligocene epoch, Paleogene period)
Location: Jamna Dolna, Menilite Beds, Carpathian Flysch Zone, southeast Poland
Birds of prey are fascinating - there are many different kinds, doing many different things, and their radiation is poorly understood. Aviraptor helps put together some pieces of the puzzle by being the first raptor known adapted for eating birds as prey - essentially, capturing (larger) flying animals in the air, a not-easy feat. It was very similar to modern diurnal raptors, with a short beak, large laws, and long slender legs. That said, with those proportions it was very small - similar in size to living sparrowhawks and tiny hawks. It didn’t have a particularly hooked beak, but a straighter one similar to the harrier-hawks. It was similar, overall, to living birds that hunt early birds - and as such, it is the earliest known bird we know of to hunt other birds (oh bird on bird crime). Living alongside a variety of other birds, including passerines and hummingbirds, it probably fed on smaller avifauna in its area - and Aviraptor itself may have evolved in response to the radiation of many small birds in the early Oligocene. In addition to early modern-hummingbirds and crown passerines, Aviraptor lived alongside hoopoe-hornbill relatives, chickens, fish, and turtles.

Look, I'm being fair to the cartoons here even if I don't necessarily like them I'm still going to put them on the list. Someone might want to check it out and they might enjoy it. I don't remember a whole lot about this show because it was an in-between segment for the George of the Jungle. I do remember it a bit though. I remember not particularly caring for it.
I think I didn't like it because it always felt more "adult-ish" to me. Perhaps that is why I didn't care for it too much. I don't really know. I still think you should check it out. It might be your kind of cartoon.
