Leon can't remember the last time he felt this nervous.

It's been a while, certainly. Maybe not since the NHL awards a few years back, irrationally certain that the minute he had to give a speech -- if he won, that is; if he did have to give a speech -- he'd open his mouth and no one would understand him. Most of the time, he can work his way past any anxieties, can be sure that in the end, things will work out. He's a confident guy.

(Smug, he can hear Kim saying. An asshole, according to Davo or Zach or Tyson. But what do they know?)

Doesn't explain why the whole flight here, he stared out the window, chewing his lip, waiting for his stomach to settle long after they hit cruising altitude.

He tried telling himself that it can't be that bad. So maybe Matthew won't come. Maybe this offer was a mistake. Maybe things won't work out. If they don't, it can't feel as bad as how he felt back in the spring.

The day after they'd lost Game 1, the day after he'd blown Matthew off, he'd known he'd fucked things up. He'd woken up, rolled over in his Calgary hotel bed and checked his phone. As soon as he read his texts, it hit him, regret churning his stomach along with the lingering bitterness of the loss. It wasn't the first time something he's done in the heat in the moment has come back to bite him, but it may have been the worst.

He'd tried to fix it, approaching Matthew before the game. Texting him after. He'd wanted to explain himself. To say that even if he resented Matthew winning, even if he couldn't take Matthew's taunts and chirps right that second, it didn't mean he had wanted Matthew to leave him alone for good. That every day they went without talking felt like he'd missed a step in the stairs, like he'd been yanked off-balance. That he hadn't known how much he'd relied on hearing from Matthew until he fucked it up. That he missed Matthew -- not just the kissing, not just the sex, but his needling and his jokes and his inability to keep quiet for more than a minute.

Not that it had worked.

If the Calgary series had been bad, the series against Colorado had been worse. Leon had tried to concentrate on the hockey, but in between the shooting pain that went up his right leg every time it bore weight and the noted silence of his phone, it was hard to keep it together.

Then they got swept, and Leon didn't have to keep it together. All he had to do was say some bullshit to the media once they cleaned out, start up his rehab regimen, and figure out how on earth he can possibly make things right. Get some semblance of what they had been doing back.

And, for reasons Leon doesn't know and can't help feeling hopeful about, Matthew decided it was worth a try.

So. Here Leon is, waiting in the Malaga airport, trying not to crawl out of his skin as the arrivals board helpfully informs him that Matthew's flight landed eighteen minutes ago.

He scans the crowd. Checks the board again. Pulls out his phone. Rests his phone against his thigh. Scrubs at his beard, newly -- optimistically -- trimmed. Pulls out his phone again. Stares unseeingly at his home screen. There's a text from Kim, asking if his friend has shown up yet. He wishes he'd never told her anything.

"Leon?"

At first, Leon thinks he's imagined it. But he looks up, and there Matthew is. Tanned, smiling slightly; looking right at Leon as he weaves through the crowd.

A fist squeezes inside Leon's chest, clenching down until his breath catches. His pulse is ringing in his ears, the way it had when Matthew had texted him, im in; the way it had when Matthew had picked up the phone and said Leon's name for the first time in weeks.

Contrary to what his friends or his sister might say, Leon isn't stupid. Before, maybe he could have lied to himself, called it attraction or interest or even opportunism, told himself that it didn't mean a thing. Not now, though. Not when his heart is flipping over somewhere around his throat, just at the sight of Matthew a few meters away. There's no lying about this.

So he might be in love with Matthew Tkachuk. Well, that's -- he can figure out how to deal with that later. First, they need to get a taxi.

"Hey," Leon says. "You got everything?"

Matthew nods back, hoisting his bag a little higher. "Yeah. Good to go."

"Good," Leon replies. "We'll have to get a taxi. Come on, this way." He turns and heads for the doors, hoping his ears aren't too red. Matthew had looked pleased to see him, but what kind of pleased? Leon knows he should keep his expectations low, but it's hard to keep from hoping now that Matthew is here, really here.

He can't help glancing over his shoulder, just to check. Feels an embarrassing swoop of relief to find Matthew a step behind him.

In the backseat of the taxi, there's perhaps half a meter of space between them. For ten minutes, that half a meter is charged, crackling. Leon wants to reach across. He can't help thinking that if he touches Matthew, or if Matthew touches him, it's proof. Proof that they're here, proof that they want the same thing.

Out of the corner of his eye, he sees Matthew's hand fall into the middle of the seat. An opening.

Leon drops his own hand. Not quite close enough. He can feel the pull, a magnetic attraction growing stronger and stronger. The gap between them is only a centimeter wide.

On the next turn, Matthew slides his fingers until they cover Leon's own.

Leon inhales sharply. He almost feels dizzy. Here, now, is his proof. This can't just be a joke to Matthew. This can't just be a whim. Not with Matthew's fingers resting against Leon's hand. Not with his touch burning Leon's skin. Leon knows, is certain, that Matthew wants this -- wants Leon -- as badly as Leon wants him in return.

It's thirty minutes until they reach Marbella. Thirty minutes until Leon can push Matthew down onto the bed with white sheets, until he can watch the sun warm Matthew's skin and kiss the smile off his face, until he can show Matthew all the ways he's thought about him since May.

It might be the longest half hour of Leon's life.

End of Year Review 2023

It is currently Christmas Eve-Eve at the time of this writing, which can mean only one thing; The End of Year Review for 2023. These past three years held a lot of significant changes and growth for me, most of which I likely wouldn't have experienced had I remained in that horrible part of the mid-west. Despite the mass 'rona pandemic and the constant mental health battles/challenges, 2020-2022 were very good to me and I consider them the best years of my life.

2023 is a welcoming addition to that train.

The first major reason were the goals I set at the end of 2022, all of which were achieved without fail (to a point);

I continued making animated shorts, but only produced 2. However, this was a good glow up year for The Boris Blobinski Show! I got to manage a smaller production team, consisting of my talented friends, and together we banged out a beautifully animated episode!

I got my contact lenses! However I haven't really worn them since I left the optometrist's office. I still intend on using these for when I go swimming or to the spa, but I can see why some people aren't crazy about this option.

I finally got my hair dyed, and it wound up being a vibrant cherry red. Had it done back in March, and most of my hair is still pretty red despite the roots coming in.

Been losing a small chunk of weight still, which means I was able to convert to smaller shirt and pants sizes.

I did a lot more exploring this year! I finally secured my Californian rite of passage by visiting In-N-Out burger, discovered a couple awesome local bakeries, and went to the movies for the first time in years. First major achievement was going to Universal for the first time ever and visiting Nintendo Land! The second biggest crowning achievement was the daytrip to The Ventura Harbor in April, where I got to board a small wildlife sea cruise and witness dolphins, whales, sea lions and seals.

I got back to working on comics again, and produced two short stories for a larger collective that is still in production. Second major reason were the events that weren't planned out of the gate, but were absolutely welcomed;

I saved enough money to get a new desktop PC built. My friend from Colorado flew down and spent the week with me, partially to help get the PC built to proper standards and to also spend some quality time together in person.

I started freeway driving practice mid-year; taking smaller steps to feel more comfortable driving in the faster/wider lanes without having my PTSD invoked. I have a long way to go, but even driving within a 5 mile radius is still worth celebrating, especially since I've actively avoided freeway driving for most of my life.

My best friend is finally coming to visit me at the end of December! I have not seen them in person since 2016, and it will be their first time visiting my apartment space as well.

As far as plans for 2024 go, here's what I have on the docket;

I will be going to an actual jury duty selection at the end of January for the first time. (Exciting, I know!) I'm curious to see what the process is like, but I hope I can dismiss myself from the proceedings. (Respectfully, of course.)

I plan on hosting another friend visit me around the Spring/Summer.

I will be working on a very ambitious episode of The Boris Blobinski show that will take up most of the first quarter of my year.

I will continue my weight loss regimen as I have started back in 2021. As of this writing I am now down to 186 lbs. This is actually pretty close to my first goal, but I want to continue this trend until I hit between 135-140.

I still want to do more local travel and discover new venues. I'm eyeballing Downtown Ventura and will likely add a few more intended places to my list.

Attend activity based events like Life Drawing and other art related functions. As an artist, it's important I find different means to shake the rust off of my skills, and as a human I need to start making efforts in social connections again.

Continue freeway driving practice to the point where I can actually go beyond 5 miles comfortably.

Continue working on my one shot comics, see if I can at least produce two more stories before building a website/platform to host them all.

Outside of Boris Blobinski, I want to be more active in the animation space again and make a few more originals outside of that project.

Lastly, I want to look into Toon Boom Harmony official Certification. I've worked with the program for over 10 years, both for traditional hand-drawn animation and character rigging, and I would love to have that piece of recognition. Hell, I am not against the idea of applying as an instructor if I can get that far!

Of course I don't think I'll be able to jump into everything as intended. I know 2024 will also be met with some unexpected surprises, but I'll gladly welcome them all the same. And lastly, before we pull the plug on this, I want to thank everyone involved in my life that has made 2023 a fantastic experience. You know who you are.

Meet Bikeflights Ambassador An-Mei Ellisor

Bikeflights Ambassador An-Mei Ellisor thrives on persevering. If something goes wrong in a race, she embraces the test of her mental strength, knowing it will only make her stronger to finish no matter what.

It’s not hard to pinpoint the genesis of this mentality. In the summer between sixth and seventh grade, An-Mei was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a blood cancer originating in the lymphatic system. Though it was caught early, An-Mei still had to endure chemotherapy, weight loss and losing her hair.

Needless to say, she persevered. And with a little help from her mountain bike team.

An-Mei was an endurance athlete from an early age, primarily running and swimming. When the opportunity to explore triathlons came up, she reluctantly added cycling to her repertoire.

Coincidentally, as cycling was added to the mix, she had just become old enoughto join her Auburn, Alabama community’s NICA team in the fledgling Alabama league. With some encouragement from her mom, An-Mei joined the team.

The transition to cycling was a bit rocky at first. She found padded shorts uncomfortable and was reluctant to commit to another activity. But the timing of her team’s Sunday practices provided just enough motivation to continue.

“I stuck with it because I preferred going to practice over church,” An-Mei said with a smile.

As the racing began, she received some added motivation: She was good, thanks to her endurance background.

The summer after her first NICA season is when An-Mei was given the devastating diagnosis. Her treatments began just prior to entering seventh grade, a time when the weight of social standing and physical appearance is starting to be felt by many kids. With the help of a wig, she chose to keep her cancer a secret from virtually everyone at school. But her mountain bike team knew.

“I still wanted to participate in the NICA season, and my parents thought it would be good for me to not be shut in a little room, so my team knew what was going on. They were very supportive in terms of treating me normal. I was still learning to ride trails. They didn’t make it about cancer, they made it about bikes.”

Despite having only finished chemotherapy in October of that year, An-Mei was competing in NICA races by the spring, often finding herself on the podium.

By the time she entered high school, her consistent success in racing helped her complete the transition from reluctant participator to passionate cyclist. In addition to NICA, An-Mei began racing for a regional development team. As high school ended, she was a NICA state champion with US National Championship experience and was headed to the renowned collegiate cycling program at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado.

Entering Fort Lewis in 2022 An-Mei earned the distinction of racing varsity as a freshman and joining her college teammates at US Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships.

An-Mei began to realize with all the racing exactly where her strengths and pure enjoyment lie: Endurance.

“I hated doing intervals. So I thought I’ll just go ride my bike for lots of hours and then go race lots of hours,” she said, before elaborating, “I ride my bike purely because I love riding my bike, and if I don't love it, then I'm not gonna gain anything from it because my mind's not gonna be in that mentality to want to train.”

With that mentality, she set her sights on the 2023 Leadville Trail 100 MTB and SBT GRVL, two iconic events in endurance racing.

It seems to have paid off, as An-Mei took third in her age group in both events, and just over a month later she won the US Marathon National Championship in her age group.

For 2024, however, she’s shifting gears a bit and taking a step back from racing.

An-Mei says her cancer experience and the possibility of a recurrence has taught her to take advantage of every moment.

“Things like that happen, and you can’t fear them, because you can’t stop them, but you can use them to motivate you to try new things and get out of your comfort zone.”

In lieu of racing in 2024, she plans to take the summer to solo bikepack from Portugal to Poland.

This winter An-Mei is taking some time off the bike to simply enjoy living in Colorado, exploring snow sports and volunteering with the adaptive sports program at Purgatory Resort in Durango.

Her ultimate goal – after graduating college with a degree in marketing and certificates in resort management, avalanche science and digital marketing – is to develop an outdoor sports facility that lowers barriers, both financially and physical ability, for people to participate in the outdoor sports she has grown to love.
