NRCB's Writeblr Intro!

Hey all! My name’s Rene and it’s about time I actually introduced myself, huh?

I’m a transgender, neurodivergent writer from the Metro-Detroit area. I love writing fantasy, slipstream, magical realism, and poetry, and I love reading those same genres (if your story has dragons, giants, and/or bug-based characters/races, hmu!) I tend to world build a lot, then pants a plot that takes place in that world. I’m always interested in being tagged in tag games, and if you’d like to be added to my tag list, please let me know!

The Curse of New Royston

Within the borders of the town of New Royston, Connecticut, one’s net worth proportionally affects their physical size. Sometime in the early 2000s, high school sophomore Gio Violett, a 20-foot-tall giant recently recovering from a near-death experience, meets Cricket Collins, an 11-inch-tall freshman who’s been living on his own since his parents left town with the intent to save up enough money to bring him with them. Together, the two of them resolve to try to break the spell over New Royston, but a variety of adversaries, from supernatural forces to the town’s political machines, stand in their way.

Oracle of the Stained Glass Windows

Kilroy, a pacifist hippalektryon, lives with his herd in the area around the Oracle, a great stone hall of unknown origin that magically shifts itself to create wondrous stained glass windows dyed with different types of magic. Kilroy himself is featured in one of these windows jamming his horn into the gut of some unknown, pitch-black creature. One day, an attempt from Kilroy to avoid his violent, prophesied fate goes wrong just as he runs straight into Mar, the creature from the window. Mar helps heal Kilroy’s injury and Kilroy, shocked by his would-be adversary’s kindness, vows to find a way to avoid their mutually-destructive destiny.

But the vast differences between the two of them may just come in handy when its time to confront both of their pasts.

What Does Your Heart Look Like?

a guiding, golden light

Just because you cannot see your own heart doesn’t mean that others can’t. Your heart is blinding, captivating, a fire so bright that others can’t bring themselves to look away. It illuminates the path they follow and cements you as a guiding star for their own wayward hearts. Every experience you’ve lived through has built your lighthouse heart up just a little higher. You are inspirational, a light that doesn’t go out.

Well that's extremely poetic and flattering, but at its core, not inaccurate. Aly loves freely and intensely and without reservation, but she also knows what it's like to feel confused and lonely. Her desire to reach out and take a stranger's hand, walk with them awhile, is a big reason she has the dear friends she has today, and why the Compass even exists. Aly gave a tarot reading once that sort of distilled her thoughts on the matter.

"Everyone is looking for a guiding light at some point, possibly many points, and fortunately there are so many stars shining in the sky, friends and teachers and all the people we've met and loved along the way! Even if the sky is dark and overcast, though, we can look at ourselves and realize that, we're shining, too! and that the light we're looking for may be coming from us. And realizing you might have been helping someone else find their way? Well, what could make you glow brighter than that?...Besides maybe being on fire and I gotta tell ya, that's a mixed bag at best."

Protection

One of the things all witches, especially beginner witches need to know about is protection. There are many forms of protection. Our first line of defense is shielding. So let's get into that first.

What is a shield?

A shield is something a person (witch or not) always has. It's a part of you. You can't get rid of it. Not ever. But that doesn't really explain what it is. So the best way to explain it is something similar to a Witcher using Quen or the shield a Jedi uses. However, unlike those you don't have to active them, they don't disappear if you aren't using them. They are always with you. We can however do things to them.

What can you do with your shield?

You can expand your shield. Push it out further than your body. You can make it thicker, more protective. Close your eyes, envision your shield. Focus on the white energy that encompasses your body and protects you-this isn't your aura. Now picture it as thicker than it is, further out from your body so that things are blocked from getting close. Imagine it as strong, bright, powerful, impenetrable.

You can pull it in close, allowing people to get a better read on you. This is done when you want someone to do a long distance read (aura, tarot, rune, bone.) Picture the shield close to you, thin, almost like a veil. Something that allows a person into your personal space.

Other ways to protect yourself

Now that we've covered the first line of defense let's get into other types of protection. You can wear protective symbols, carry protective stones, rub protective oil on your wrists, spray protection mist on you, make protection jars, have wards in place, make guardians.

Protective symbols

One of the things you can do to protect yourself is wear protective symbols. These are things associated with protection or protection deities.

-Mjolnir (Thor's hammer) is a protective symbol. Thor is the guardian of Midgard, protective of Midgardians (especially the working class) and Mjolnir is his hammer. He uses it to protect Asgard as well as the Earth and her people. Wearing his hammer is a protection symbol.

-Eye of Horus. This Egyptian symbol is related to the moon. Its protective powers come from deflecting malevolent forces

-Eye of Ra. This Egyptian symbol is related to the sun. Its protective powers come from instilling fear of violence (clearly in others not yourself)

-Vegvisir is the Norse compass. It is made of eight rune staves. It is to protect someone from being wayward and getting lost

These are only some symbols of protection, but gives you an idea what to research and where to start

Protection crystals

Carrying crystals on your person (in a bag, small jar, bracelet, rings, or necklace) can protect you. You can also have them in your space whether this be your home, bathroom, car, or work desk. I have a few in every room of my house, wear rings and a bracelet, have one in the work van, and one in my car. Here are some good ones.

-Black Tourmaline is a protective and grounding stone that keeps negativity at bay. Tourmaline is the black widow of gemstones. Dark and mysterious, revered, and feared. Black Tourmaline boosts your energies when activated and repels negativity when asked. Use this protection stone when you are in a crowd, facing a nemesis, or having a dismal day. While Black Tourmaline replenishes the root chakra, Tourmaline comes in other colors like pink, green, blue, and red that heal other chakras.

-Hematite is protective, grounding, and centering and can also attract energies you’d like in your life. Hematite is a stone of the people, ushering in hope, optimism, and courage even through the toughest of times. It is beloved for its power to circulate both energy flow and blood flow. This protective energy crystal keeps away the bad. It enhances charisma and a magnetic personality. Use shiny Hematite to balance the Root Chakra.

-Bronzite is the fierce warrior stone that has your back at all times. It stands beside you as a mighty protection rock, repelling negative energies and people. Spiritually, it provides a state of certainty and decisiveness in your path. Bronzite clears confusion, slashes out destructive forces from your life, and helps you to adapt to changes. Use brazen Bronzite at the Solar Plexus and Root Chakras.

-Jet is a powerful ninja crystal that serves as your first line of defense against outside forces like violence, illness, and curses. Protective Jet helps you tackle your fears, manage your depression, and heal through the grieving process. Jet can balance your Root Chakra. With Jet, you feel safe, secure, and uplifted as you recover from tumultuous situations.

-Obsidian is the number one crystal to protect you from outside negative forces. The draining energy of complaining coworkers, customers, strangers, and even family members are reflected off the stone, keeping your aura safe from a negative onslaught. Obsidian is a must-have for healers in their practice so that the baggage of clients are not passed on to the therapist. Obsidian helps you deal with emotional and physical pain. It is a Root Chakra stone.

-Shungite is a handsome shotgun silver protector crystal with a sleek surface. It watches over you during worldly travels and spiritual journeys, ready to eliminate enemy forces that try to obstruct your path. The shiny, reflective surface makes Shungite ideal for gazing. When placed in the home, it wards off negative energy and safeguards you like a top-class security agent stone. Use Shungite to balance your spiritual and physical bodies after doing work at the Root Chakra.

Protection Oils

These are essential or even infused oils that have been mixed with a base oil for a specific reason. This means taking oils specific for protection and mixing them with a base oil such as almond, coconut, avocado, or even olive. Or you can make it yourself by placing protective herbs in a base oil and letting them simmer or sit in the oil for at least a week before use.

-Cedarwood Essential Oil

This woody essential oil, produces a spiritual vibration which purifies and grounds the body. As this is a tree oil, it’s not hard to conceive that.

Cedarwood is a cleansing essential oil, which means it is excellent for purging negative energy from people and places. So, if you are carrying or suspect you are carrying a negative spiritual bogey, this is the essential oil for returning your spiritual protection.

Similarly, in terms of good practice, use Cedarwood essential oil to cleanse your spiritual working space to eliminate any residual energies that maybe lurking from previous spiritual work. Or, if it’s a new space, always clear it because you can’t be sure what maybe there.

-Rosemary Essential Oil

Fresh scented Rosemary essential oil is, unsurprisingly, a spiritual purification oil. And, I am talking purification of the mind, body and spirit, Rosemary essential oil is super stimulating, makes quick work of any psychic or spiritual blockages and clears negative energy.

Rosemary essential oil is excellent for use in spells and rituals, not only helping you to remember what you’re doing but why you are doing it. A great help if you suffer from brain fog courtesy of your hormones; #menopause

Spiritual Rosemary is the essential oil for love, long life, friendship and happiness.

Traditionally, Rosemary essential oil was used by the Greeks for their gods and goddesses.

Rosemary has traditionally been burned in Greek temples as a sacrifice for gods and goddesses.

I would use Rosemary essential oil on your Sacral chakra.

If you are indigenous to Europe, I would especially recommend this essential oil for spiritual protection due to your historical genetic connection. This will give it a greater chance of success.

-Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint essential oil is perfect for grounding your mind, body and soul. So, if you are struggling to get into the right headspace for spiritual work or hold any anxieties around your spiritual protection, this is the essential oil to use.

This essential oil is good for spiritual protection, purification, grounding and cleansing.

Peppermint essential oil is a sweat lodge favourite because it stimulates the senses, improves stamina, focus and alertness. It’s also ideal for meditations and spiritual ceremonies.

Peppermint essential oil is one of the most concentrated oils available and to that end it must be diluted with an air purifier or essential oil diffuser.

You can safely dry inhale this essential oil from your palms to quickly access your spiritual self but I wouldn’t recommend applying it directly to your skin, please use a carrier oil.

I recommend this essential oil for work on the Throat, Third Eye and Crown chakras.

-Basil Essential Oil

Basil is well regarded as a spirit plant in many countries in the world, meaning its well known for its spiritual properties. Thus, Basil essential oil is a renown spiritual essential oil.

Basil essential oil is useful for any spirit or spell work for fertility and love. Due to it’s amazing sympathetic vibrations, it works wonders on family spiritual protection, eliminating negativity and soothing arguments by calming the nerves.

This essential oil is perfect for the Heart chakra, stimulating and purifying this important energetic gateway. Also fantastic for boosting the energetic frequency between your heart and your hands.

Basil essential oil is also associated with clairvoyance and honesty, if you’re truly able to accept and believe what it will help you to see.

It’s another ancient, having been used for thousands of years to neutralise energy.

-Sage essential oil emits powerful negative ions, which are generated in the air after a storm or by the ocean. Which is why we usually feel so much clearer after a storm has passed or when we’re down by the sea.

For spiritual protection, I recommend rubbing sage essential oil on to your pulse points, ideally in a carrier oil. This is a quick and simply way to get it into your system and rid you of any energetic blockages.

Or, put it in your diffuser for about 15 to 20 minutes before you start your spiritual work to create spiritual protection by cleansing away any negative energies.

The Greeks and Romans discovered that sage smoke brings wisdom and mental acuity, the essential oil will do the same thing.

You can also use sage essential oil to neutralise the energies in your home. By bringing the diffused essential oil around your body and in your auric field, you can neutralize discordant energies.

This essential oil is good for clearing blockages from all of the chakras. (Side note here. If you burn sage use green, tricolor, or purple. White sage is endangered)

Protection Mist

These are made by diluting essential oils with witch hazel and water. You can also add crystals to this, but make sure the crystals are safe to get wet.

You can make your own oil by picking a base oil and adding herbs

These are the ones I like to use. Black peppercorns, cinnamon sticks, bay leaves, rosemary, sage, mint, and sea salt.

Runes

There are a few runes that you can wear as rings, get as tattoos, draw with oils on you or window seals to protect yourself. Thurisaz is Thor's rune and very protective. Algiz is another. Twiaz is Tyr's rune and protective.

Wards

Wards/Warding is used in reference to any form of magick intended to protect a person/place/thing from negative or parasitic energies/entities.

Two types

Spacial

These are wards put on/surrounding a space with the intent of protecting it. One of the most common forms of this one would encounter in early study is casting a 'circle'.

Personal

These are wards that are made to protect the practitioner. They are portable, most commonly things like jewellery. Usually enchanted or charged crystals.

Wards can be temporary, like circle casting and then closing during and after a ritual. Or they can be more permanent, like posts/structures along a property line. Either way, it is a good idea to do regular maintenance on them.

Charging

It is a good idea to periodically make sure your wards have the necessary energy. Some ward types like sigils and crystals are thought to need to be charged regularly. However, even if not explicitly said one should still check. One may want to check after large instances of attack.

Clearing

Wards, even if not intended to trap the negative energy, can have build up. Some common methods of clearing actually involve taking the ward down and redoing them or cleansing the individual objects used to make them. This process can temporarily leave the practitioner vulnerable.

Guardians

These can be crystals, statues, plants, or an empty vessel. There are a few different ways you can do this. The way I do it is ask the crystal or plant if they will guard my home. If they agree to it I take a bay leaf and write my petition on it. I then burn it, mix it with protective herbs and black salt. I put protection oil on the guardian along with the herbal mix. If it's a plant or the crystal is big enough I will draw a protective rune with the oil before adding the herb mix. Each month during the full moon I feed them. This is simply giving them more oil and herbs. You can put herbs in the dirt of plants, but oils should go on the pot.

New KS Campaign + Web Novel and Writing Announcements

Hi there, Tumblr!

Just wanted to pop in and give an update on a few fun writing projects I’ve got going on! First of all, I’ve had THREE flash fiction pieces accepted to e-zines so you’ll see some of my work featured in upcoming publications from Sirens Call Publications, Timber Ghost Press, and Selenite Press!

I also have three stories that will be available on launch day for the upcoming adult storytelling app, Sultry Little Things, so if you’re in the mood for something spicy keep your eyes peeled for that (I’m writing under the name Eleanor Belmont and all of my stories feature queer couples!)

I’m also going to be featured in a group project through Reflex Press, working on a novella-in-flash project with twenty five other writers. My week to write will be in early Feb. and I can’t wait to work on it!

Some other big news, I’m releasing my first web novel over on my P*treon, where I have several tiers available and I’m dropping a ton of short stories, novel chapters, and extras! The web novel, titled The Wayward Souls of Avalon, is a queer slice-of-life meets sci-fi story featuring two strangers stuck in a space station bound for Mars. The lowest tier, Starry-Eyed Space Cowboys, gets you access to the web novel. The second tier, Galaxy-Wide Ghoulfriends, gets you the web novel and extra spooky stories. The final tier, Saucy Space Cadets, gets you all of that AND 18+ bonus content.

NOW! The BIGGER news! I am launching my first KS campaign and I definitely want you to check it out! My goal is small and the zine will be about twenty pages long so it’s a nice, easy read for a spooky, rainy afternoon! It’s a dark, erotxc horror spin on the myth of the Minotaur - Asterion - and the Labyrinth. It features sticky pomegranates, monster lovin’, and a hefty dose of Hades’ wrath. It launches Oct. 1st and I’d love if you could check out the pre-launch! The cover was done by the amazing Sera Swati, creator of the webcomic Bone’s Tarot and I can’t wait to get this story out for you to read!

I would like to let y’all know that I’m literally struggling how to articulate how your cards to kick off the week are about a new start without sounding like I have a pregnancy fetish like every other reader out there. But if you’re INDEED trying to have children, want a new pet or maybe you want a new dominant/sbumissive then yay!

For some reason, when I read with this deck, it makes me catch onto the more material and mundane aspects of the woo woo by seeing them on literal, tangible terms BUT with a spiritual catch, so whatever physicality you do, accept and work with will almost always have an implication beyond your physical life and is very well felt in aspects of and in your practice of spirituality.

I also don’t think it’s a coincidence tomorrow/later (depending on your timezone) also happens to be New Moon in Taurus either.

If I were to describe the feeling the cards give me, it’s that moment when you look back at how much something has grown while also being in the moment of seeing it come to bloom. You’re looking at your hard work, the time that’s come to pass to come to this moment and vibrating excitedly coz “YES I MADE IT. FINALLY.”

But do remember that whatever you’re trying to speak to existence and make real comes with a new responsibility and a radical shift in your lifestyle. Nothing will be the same from the moment the change you’ve been waiting for will come to be.

There’s also a feeling of ‘there’s no turning back from here on’ somehow!

Then again, when you look at the Fool card, no matter what system and however it’s illustrated, they’re guided by solely intuition and their innate optimism with barely anything on them coz YOLO!

I know, you’re probably thinking ‘DUH I know that’ but just felt like reminding anyway because sometimes in our excitement or agonizing towards the change and new that we’ve been waiting on for, we kinda get blindsided by the hype and ‘CAN THIS JUST HAPPEN ALREADY’ feels.

Aaaaaaa im so excitedddd!!!!!! Im getting my first Tarot deck in around 6-10 days!!

I was looking to see which decks call to me more and none really caught my eye except the Wayward Dark tarot deck.

So I did more research and looked up a bunch of pictures.

It has really good reviews on etsy which is the only place I could find them to buy.

Anyway I really liked it and so I asked my grandma since I knew she would get it if I asked, and my mom wont care too much, and she said yea!!

I can't wait!!!!!

What’s with the scarf: yet another snowbaz meta

aka the long-awaited and much-anticipated knight/dragon dichotomy meta.

Wanna know that the fuck was up with that scene where simon caught baz’s scarf? Welcome, you’ve found your new home. Let’s go.

Guess who’s back. Back again.

It’s me, bitch. Now here with their 5th goddamn essay on these goddamn books. Somebody stop me I’m a fiend.

For this one i really do suggest you read my simon is a dragon meta, but if you don’t have time just look at this tweet.

Now that we have that out of the way. Let’s get started.

Point One: The Knight

I know what you’re saying, “what? I thought this was about the goddamn scarf? What’s this shit about knights stop.” I tricked you, fucker. The scarf isn’t until the end. (You save the best for last.)

Simon Snow is the knight in shining armor of the world of mages. He’s given a sword and pointed in a direction and off he marches. He’s the secret weapon. He’s the bomb. He’s the one that came to save us. He’s the one that came to end us all. The poetry of Carry On is that he was the dragon he was meant to slay, and he gave up his “knighthood” (powers) to defeat himself.

It’s true that Simon gave up his powers, but did he give up his knighthood? In title and in practice, yes, but he still acts the part. Let’s investigate the defining feature of knights: The Code of Chivalry.

To quote this website that words it perfectly:

“ A Code of Chivalry was documented in an epic poem called 'The Song of Roland'. [...] Roland was a loyal defender of his liege Lord Charlemagne and his code of conduct became understood as a code of chivalry.”

From The Song of Roland came a listing of chivalrous traits that all knights should strive to have. They are as follows:

To fear God and maintain His Church

To serve the liege lord in valour and faith

To protect the weak and defenceless

To give succour to widows and orphans

To refrain from the wanton giving of offence

To live by honour and for glory

To despise pecuniary reward

To fight for the welfare of all

To obey those placed in authority

To guard the honour of fellow knights

To eschew unfairness, meanness and deceit

To keep faith

At all times to speak the truth

To persevere to the end in any enterprise begun

To respect the honour of women

Never to refuse a challenge from an equal

Never to turn the back upon a foe

This is Simon to such a T that it’s a little bit alarming. Wayward Son is Simon’s struggle to reintroduce himself into civilian life after being a “boy soldier” since he was eleven. He’s a knight whose sword has been taken, armor melted down, and purpose rescinded.

A knight can’t be a knight when the king’s been killed. Who, then, does he serve? Who, then, does he protect?

Simon has lost his purpose, his meaning. He has these traits that he doesn’t know how to funnel into something else. He’s a chess piece that’s utterly worthless.

Not only does he feel purposeless, but he also hates an entire side of himself. and that leads us to our next point:

Point Two: The Dragon

Simon Snow was the villain of his own story.

He was his own dragon to his own knight. His own worst enemy. The main conflict of this story is a man vs. himself type. Simon hates an entire part of himself. He doesn’t just hate it, he vehemently denies its existence.

“I’m not a DRAGON!” (Wayward Son, Chapter 35)

Of course, if you’ve read my wings meta you’ll know that not only is this him denying part of himself, but also his sexuality. And his love for Baz. But Rainbow writes layers upon layers into this delicious parfait, and Simon’s dragon-ness isn’t limited to being his sexuality. This is literature, after all.

The knight needs to accept the dragon. Simon needs to accept the person that his trauma has turned him into. If you’ve been through any major trauma, you’ll know that you’re different afterwards. You’re still you. All of the most important parts are there- you did make it out alive- but you’re a little bit different.

You’re more careful. You’re more anxious. You guard your heart just a little more fiercely. You don’t want to let people in quite so easily anymore.

What is a dragon’s purpose in a narrative? To protect. To guard. To keep out. To keep in.

The dragon is those behaviors that we learned to protect ourselves in those times of hurt, and while, yes, we need to unlearn some of those behaviors, certain ones may never leave. Once you figure out how to read micro-expressions on an abuser, you can’t just unlearn how to read a face like a book. The issue is figuring out how to manage those habits. How to keep them from hurting others that aren’t going to hurt us. How to... train... our dragons... (I’m sorry it’s my favorite movie.)

So, the dragon is simon’s shadow self and the knight is his light self, yes? Yes. But! Let’s put a magnifying glass up to these two concepts.

If a dragon’s narrative purpose is to guard, protect, keep out/in, and be defeated, then what’s a knight’s narrative purpose? A knight’s purpose is to guard, protect, save, and defeat.

These two concepts aren’t wildly different, they’re two sides of the same coin. Simon needs to stop seeing these two sides of him as enemies and instead recognize that they’re good and bad in equal measures. The dragon questions potential dangers; the knight helps all out of the goodness of his heart. The knight obeys blindly; the dragon knows to obey himself first. The knight is selfless in all things; the dragon is selfish and greedy. There are pros and cons to both archetypes.

But fire and steel? The monster and the hero? How do you reconcile these two concepts? How do they fit into one person?

Well, the answer surprised me too.

Point Three: Tarot?

I know, I know. Stick with me. I’ll explain.

In every tarot deck there are the major arcana (unimportant for this meta) and, just like in a regular playing card deck, four suits. Each suit has a king, queen, knight, and page (also like a regular card deck). Each suit relates to an element: pentacles = earth, swords = air, wands = fire, and cups = water.

We’re going to be looking at the knight of wands.

He is a knight of fire and passion and spark. He is headstrong, impulsive, and reckless. This card is Simon in his entirety. To drive home my point, let me quote from the guidebook to The Enchanted Tarot by Amy Zerner & Monte Farber:

“The dark [Knight] of Wands rides into view upon his great, plumed charger, carrying a fire-tipped wand. Behind him the gray, dusky clouds swirl like smoke, against which his figure glows like red embers. His journey is carrying him into the unknown but he is a pioneer and filled with energy and excitement. He likes to take risks. An active, unpredictable and competitive disposition drives him forward. He radiates a very masculine energy, full of creativity and passion. His youth, however, sometimes impels him to be quarrelsome or overbearing if he feels his authority and leadership are in question. Somewhat self-centered, he is likely to think he knows a good deal more than he does...”

The knight of wands embodies both that regal nature of a knight and fiery passion of a dragon. Simon needs to stop thinking that these two sides of him are incompatible or that one is lesser. Simon is Simon and he is worthy to be called a knight, even with all of his dragon parts.

Point Four: Courtly Love

or maybe not so courtly?

Courtly love was a concept in the knight’s code of chivalry where a knight would pick a fair maiden from a higher status and dedicate all of his great deeds to her honor. Because the catholic church had a tight grip on everyone’s balls, though, this love was not sexualized. Well... it wasn’t supposed to be but we all know how that shit works.

Agatha was supposed to be the “endgame.” She was Simon’s courtly love. His fair maiden to which he dedicated all of his noble deeds.

But Agatha didn’t want to be a fair maiden anymore.

And Simon didn’t love her.

And then there was Baz’s hankie.

In most Courtly Love relationships, there was a token bestowed upon the knight by the lady as a symbol of gratitude and affection. This token was, most often, a kerchief.

I think we alllll remember that goddamn handkerchief. I remember that handkerchief. That handkerchief haunts my dreams.

Simon keeps that goddamn handkerchief in his drawer after he takes it from Agatha. He doesn’t even give it back. He so desperately wants to have this token of Baz’s love. His approval. His friendship. He wants something of Baz’s because he feels like he can’t have Baz himself. Baz is his real unreachable maiden. Baz is the one Simon doesn’t feel like he’s good enough for.

But more importantly, this brings us to the most important point of this meta:

Point Five: The Scarf

“The Mustang sounds like a bat on its way out of hell. And Simon is its getaway driver. Fourth gear on a gravel road, his blue eyes narrowed to slits. My mother’s scarf catches the wind and slips off my head. Snow whips out his hand to rescue it. He glances over at me, for just a second, holding it like a banner.” (Wayward Son, Chapter 25)

I know I literally screamed the first time i read that. Simon is a knight saving his lady’s favor.

But it’s not just that the scarf is a favor. Simon always gives it back. You don’t return a lady’s favor.

“‘Oh, hey,’ he says like he’s just remembered something. He leans back to reach in his pocket, and takes out a wad of blue silk.

‘That’s my mother’s scarf!’ I reach for it.

He opens his hand. The scarf threads through his fingers as I pull it away. ‘Sorry,’ he says. ‘I forgot it was in my pocket.’

‘I thought I left it in the hotel room.’

‘You did.’

I fold the scarf, gently. Snow watches for a moment, then looks away.”

(Wayward Son, Prologue)

Now, @theflyingpeach (hi bri) pointed out to me that the scarf probably represents Baz’s humanity, what with it being his mother’s and him leaving it at the hotel. And yeah she’s right you can read it as that. (and it’s quite compelling) But that’s another meta for another day.

Today we’re on that good knight shit.

That scarf is Simon’s heart.

Baz says he always travels with it. He gently uses it to protect himself against the wind. Simon thinks he’s gorgeous when he wears it. Baz keeps thinking he’s lost it...

but he hasn’t.

He’ll never lose it, as long as Simon’s around.

Go back up and read those excerpts and tell me you don’t want to burst into tears.

Simon keeps returning his heart to Baz. “I’m broken. I’m bruised,” Simon whispers. “I’m a knight with no sword. I’m a dragon with no hoard. I only have this one last thing to protect, but instead I give it to you. I’d give it to you again, and again, and again. It’s yours forever. Even though I think you don’t want it, it’s yours until you explicitly tell me to take it back. My love is yours for however long you want it, Baz.”

The handkerchief in Carry On also translates into being Simon’s heart.

“I go to the drawer where the handkerchief is shoved in with my wand and a few other things, then I wave it in his face. ‘This one.’

Baz pulls the fabric out of my hand, and I pull it back because I don’t want him to have it. I don’t want him to have anything right now.” (Carry On, Chapter 50)

Simon wasn’t ready to give Baz his heart yet in Carry On, but it was still Baz’s. It still had his family crest embroidered right into the material. Simon’s heart has always been Baz’s and Baz’s alone. It’s just that now, he freely gives it. He freely returns it.

“I’m yours, Baz. I’m yours.”

A knight could not go against his code and cross that barrier to be with his lady.

But a dragon is selfish. A dragon can ask for what it wants.

And all Simon wants is Baz.

And Baz is just waiting for him to ask.
