Huutat (Lemonade Berry) flowers by Wayne S. Grazio Via Flickr: The lemonade berry is a small shrubby tree. The plant is native to the coastal range of southern California and Baja California. This tree can grow up to 25 feet in height and is a common member of the chaparral plant community. The Kumeyaay Indians used tangy huutat berries to flavor their tea. The berries are soaked in water to provide flavor and they’re also eaten fresh. The seeds from these berries are ground up and combined with this tangy drink. A wad of lemonade berries can also be placed in the mouth as a means to keep thirst at bay during long hikes under the sun. The bark of this tree is used in a tea after childbirth.

Đi vào Khu Nghĩa trang Manila Chinese ở thủ đô của Philippines, bạn có thể nghĩ rằng mình đang ở một vùng dân cư ngoại ô. Nằm ven một con đường hai chiều là những ngôi nhà và biệt thự, một vài căn trong số đó có hai hoặc ba tầng. Những ngôi nhà này thực ra là những ngôi mộ. Không chỉ vẻ bên ngoài đâu, mà bên trong chúng thực sự là những ngôi nhà đầy đủ tiện nghi hiện đại như điều hòa nhiệt độ, phòng tắm có nước nóng và lạnh, nhà vệ sinh xả nước, nhà bếp. Người thân của những người quá cố thường đến viếng ngôi mộ sang chảnh vào cuối tuần, đồng thời cúng thức ăn và thắp nhang.

Được biết đến với cái tên là “Hàng mộ triệu phú” và “Tiểu Beverly Hills” (Beverly Hills là tên khu nhà giàu ở Mỹ), Nghĩa trang Manila Chinese được xây dựng vào cuối thế kỷ 19 dành cho tất cả những người TQ không theo đạo Công giáo, họ bị thực dân Tây Ban Nha từ chối chôn cất trong các nghĩa địa Công giáo. Vào thời điểm đó, những người định cư gốc TQ làm nghề bán rong các thể loại nằm trong số những người giàu nhất ở Manila. Để thể hiện sự giàu có và dân số ngày càng tăng, họ đã xây dựng những nghĩa trang lớn nhất trong hầu hết các nghĩa trang.

Thậm chí ngày nay, nhiều gia đình giàu có nhất ở Manila đã có dòng máu lai giữa TQ và Philippines, và những ngôi mộ phô trương mà họ đã xây dựng cho người chết như một minh chứng cho sự giàu có của mình. Một lô đất trong Nghĩa trang Manila Chinese có thể tiêu tốn tới 50 triệu peso (gần 59 tỷ đồng) cho hợp đồng thuê 25 năm, sau đó phải trả một khoản phí thuê khác, nếu không thi thể sẽ phải chuyển đi nơi khác. Ngày nay, ngoài người TQ không theo Công giáo, nhiều người TQ theo đạo Chúa cũng được chôn cất tại nghĩa trang này.

Không phải tất cả đối tượng được chôn cất ở đây đều giàu tới mức mua được villa, biệt thự làm nơi yên nghỉ. Nghĩa trang này cũng có một “khu vực nghèo” với những lăng mộ có kích thước thông thường. Chúng nằm dọc theo lối đi hẹp ở phía lối vào.

Trong nghĩa trang còn có một số địa danh nổi tiếng, ví dụ như Đền Chong Hock Tong, ngôi đền TQ cổ nhất ở Manila. Hội trường Liệt sĩ (The Martyrs Hall) được xây dựng vào đầu những năm 1950 để vinh danh các nhà lãnh đạo cộng đồng người TQ bị người Nhật xử tử trong Thế chiến II. Đài tưởng niệm Ruby Tower thì dành riêng cho người Philippines gốc TQ đã thiệt mạng trong trận động đất năm 1968, nó cũng nằm trong nghĩa trang.
