#Was not expecting the blight parents to be. like that. Not bad tho! Well I mean they r evil but like Im not disappointed by how they r.
THE OWL HOUSE HAS A CHARACTER PROBLEM!
And when I say this, I don't basically talk about Lilith's not existing rushed character arc (srsly, that woman was literally evil a few episodes ago but suddenly became Luz's goofy cool aunt without any development???)
Or it's not about the show neglecting characters like Raine, Darius and of course, Gus... (The show was just too busy with giving Hunter & Amity too much screen time than they actually needed tho)
NO, it's not about those things... yet (But really, we should talk about it all sometime)
Today's topic is how characters act differently than the way they're introduced. So, let's start without wasting any more time!
1-) Alador Blight
It's strongly hinted in the show that Alador was forced to work overtime because of Odalia. And from Odalia's perspective, it had 2 benefits for her.
1-) Obviously the more Alador worked, the more money they would gain. And since Odalia is a greedy and superficial b!tch, there's nothing she would enjoy more than money.
2-) The absolute control of her kids. Since Alador was tired and sleep-deprived all the time, he had no energy left to take care of his kids or even himself. Which caused him to neglect Edric, Emira and Amity, much to Amity's annoyance.
Tumblr media
And with Alador being absent in their life; Edric, Emira and Amity were in Odalia's mercy. And because there's no other parent around, the poor kids were forced to live up to their mother's extremely high expectations and tried to please her all the time.
And it's also hinted that Odalia favored Edric and Emira and gave them some extra privileges due to their physical similarity to her (yes, I'm talking about green hair). And she subtly encouraged Edric and Emira to mock and bully Amity. So it's safe to say that Odalia was the one who created their sibling rivalry in the first place.
Tumblr media
(tho let's be honest, "But teacher I'm in love with a dictionary!" & "I'm studying dork arts!" will always be iconic😂)
And it all makes sense, because isolating victims is a very common tactic of abusers, especially the control freaks like Odalia. Leaving Alador exhausted all the time, favoring her golden twins and treating Amity like a scapegoat worked well for her.
But hold up!
I said Alador, then why am I talking about Odalia?
There's nothing wrong in the way her character is written. She was a b!tch from the start and was still a b!tch at the end.
Tumblr media
HOWEVER, there's this big issue...
It's said in the show that Alador loved his kids and wanted to spend more time with them. That's why he was a threat for Odalia's authority.
But the Alador we know from "Understanding Willow" wasn't like that all.
Not only his appearance, but his whole attitude was different as well. He was seen to be strict and controlling towards Amity as much as his wife. So why did Odalia feel the need to keep him busy then if he shared the same ruthless attitude with her??
Tumblr media
Because at this point, it's no longer about Alador or Odalia, it's about the show. Just check out these pictures. These are the storyboard pictures with dialogues that has been cut from the show (probably in order to make Alador look softer in the process)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The show changed Alador's character drastically for... literally no reason? When he made his first real appearance, I was like "Hold up- this doesn't look like the big bad guy I was expecting" But it wasn't a nice surprise for me. Because it's never revealed why the series changed his character entirely. It didn't make any sense.
And in "Watching and Dreaming", we've seen Alador's epilogue design. And he had a somewhat clean appearance. Which hints that he had a nasty appearance earlier due to working overtime, but since he was free of Odalia's pressure now, he could spend more time on his personal appearance.
Tumblr media
But the thing is, in "Understand Willow", he already had a clean and formal appearance (at least he seemed so from his silhouette). So it still leaves a question mark in the head why Odalia made him work overtime anyway.
And as I mentioned, the storyboard Alador was much colder and scarier too, just look at Amity's face.
Tumblr media
Even the storyboards were like that. So at this point, I have no explanation for Alador's character change (No, I don't call it character development because there was no development)
Alador isn't the only example of this sudden character changes that makes no sense. Hunter, Collector and Lilith are other examples for this (I'll be analyzing them soon) But so far, this is all I say for Alador for now.

unrelated to tot question, how did willow even get into hexside? Her dads canonically went to different schools (in Thems the breaks kids) and I may be misremembering this but pretty sure odalia said something like “we’ll make sure the girl never gets admitted into hexside.”
The only solution I can think of right now is Bump supremacy
Odalia did say that but it was a conditional threat. She would only become an obstacle in Willow attending Hexside if Amity didn't do as told and break off their friendship. She did so Odalia stopped paying any attention to Willow.
Gilbert and Harvey went to St. Epiderm and Glandus respectively but from what we know about both schools, it's not unlikely that they'd opt to send her somewhere else.
As stated by Raine, St Epiderm was both pricey (They could only attend on a scholarship.) and not in an ideal location (Their parents had to live by the Knee in order for them to attend and didn't like how cold it was.)
I don't know the details of the Parks' living situation. They're certainly not poor but they're not nearly as well off as the Blights. (Who also chose to send their kids to Hexside, implying it must be a school with a good reputation.) Plus idk if the Parks lived in Bonesborough all along or if they moved there for the sake of Willow's education but if it's the former, having to migrate to the Knee/sending their daughter to school so far from home would not have been the convenient option.
While Epiderm might have been a consideration when Gilbert and Harvey were deciding Willow's future school, I imagine Glandus was simply out of the question from the beginning. Harvey attended himself so he would well aware of the social hierarchy there. It was established in TTLGR that Glandus students have a dog-eat-dog mentality. The strong are expected to push down the weak.
Considering what a shy, sensitive, insecure, clumsy, magically challenged little girl Willow was, Harvey knew she'd be bullied relentlessly if they sent her there. And the Parks definitely give off the impression that they're very protective of their child and most likely don't believe in the idea that being put in that kind of situation will help her in the long run.
(Obviously she ended up getting bullied at Hexside too but neither Harvey or Gilbert were familiar enough with the school to know that.)
As for how Willow got admitted into Hexside at all, yeah. It was absolutely Bump.
It's mentioned by Amity that in order to pass the Hexside entrance exam, you need to be able to cast at least two spells. I always saw this as just a formality to prove the child has a functioning bile sac, rather than an expectation for the child to be already talented before they even start school. So like, even if they're bad at magic, they have the potential to improve. This was Bump's mentality, I believe. Principle Faust probably had higher standards for the former exam but I figure Bump definitely changed a lot once he became principle, namely that every student have the opportunity to learn and excel even if they're not immediately perfect.
(Bump most likely had his faults tho. Ableism seemed pretty normalized on the Boiling Isles when it came to witches who couldn't do magic. So like. A kid like Hunter would probably have been turned away if he tried to enroll in season 1. Although Luz being a human and proving she could do magic in an alternative way definitely opened Bump's mind a bit. So from this point, I imagine he'd be more lenient in allowing students who aren't biological witches.)
So like. Willow could, at the very least, cast a plant based spell. Maybe something simple too, like a light spell (Amity once said disparagingly, that a light spell was something even a child could do.)
So I definitely see it as Willow just barely scraping by. She managed two spells, though she could only do one of them well. But Bump probably wouldn't turn away any witch kid with magical potential unless he could not see a single feasible way for them to improve at Hexside. (eg. a kid with no magical ability whatsoever.)

For the headcanon ask game: carmilla, laura, leliana, and sera
So, I took forever to answer this, and it ended up being way too big. It was very good to write tho, I love thinking about headcanons for my fave characters!
For this Headcanons post.
Carmilla
Headcanon A: what I think realistically: As much as canon likes to ignore its own lore, Carmilla is a very powerful vampire. It’s not an easy thing, living for more than 3 centuries, especially with a creator like Lilita around. I headcanon each of the dean’s children developed a particular ability more than others, and for Carmilla, that is shape-shifting. Her panther form is her favorite, but turning into mist has proven advantageous more than once. That last one is an exercise in self-control, becoming another state of matter entirely is glaring proof of how well Carmilla has mastered her abilities.
Headcanon B: what I think is fucking hilarious: Talking about that panther form, it’s terrifying. Far larger than a normal leopard, with teeth and claws that are sharper than scalpels. And she acts like the laziest house cat around Laura. Sleeping away the day on Laura’s bed, leaving a veritable heap of cat hair, purring louder than a truck when Laura scratches between her ears, and of course, sitting in front of Laura’s computer when she wants attention (and to be a little shit). Laura’s favorite is when she can cuddle with the giant black cat, who’s far warmer than an undead creature of the night should be.
Headcanon C: what is heart-crushing and awful but fun to inflict on friends: Against the dean’s advice/orders, and under a bit of well-intentioned mockery from Mattie, Carmilla kept an eye on her mortal family through the ages. Most of them perished the same night Carmilla died, but one of her younger brothers had been sent for fosterage with some relatives. The servants under her power reported he grew up to be a kind man, very different from their father. To the Carmilla of those early years, reveling in bloodlust and excess, it shouldn’t have mattered at all. But somehow, it did. So the years passed, and she kept tabs his descendants. His daughter was smart, his son excellent with a blade, and so on. The coffin put an end to it, as it did to many things. After she got back in contact with Mattie, she learned the last of her kin, a boy no older than 17, disappeared in the Carpathians during one of the many disastrous offensives of Austria in the first world war. It shouldn’t matter, but that severing of the last real connection she had to mortal life hurt more than she could have expected.
Headcanon D: what would never work with canon but the canon is shit so I believe it anyway: This is actually a bunch of headcanons rolled into one, but Carmilla was well aware of the various confronts Mattie and the Dean had. In fact, Mattie asked Carmilla to join her in at least a few of them (both because she truly trusts Carmilla, and because, as said on headcanon A, Carmilla is no weakling). She never accepted the offer, first because she was too taken with the lavish life style Lilita offered, and later because she did not want to be interred again. The important thing is, tho both her and Mattie would desperately like to believe the Dean was dead, they would both know she is very very hard to kill, and would realize she was still around about, oh, five minutes into Mattie’s appearance in s2. Laura would have noticed the many glaring signs pointing to that too, and this all leads to many headcanons where s2 went completely different and so did s3.
For a shorter headcanon, Carmilla continues to be a vampire, and she and Mattie actually get to have revenge against Lilita over her literal millennia of abuse.
Laura
Headcanon A: what I think realistically: Whether Laura becomes a journalist or a professor, she never loses her knack for getting into supernatural trouble. One year she unveils a trafficking scheme focused on bringing fresh blood to vampires in Paris, in another a group of werecats shows up on her and Carmilla’s doorstep, asking Laura to investigate a rival colony and their recruitment methods, and so on. By this point, Carmilla just sees Laura off with a kiss and a promise to call if she needs any help.
Headcanon B: what I think is fucking hilarious: More cute than hilarious, but Laura is really ticklish around her ribs. Carmilla takes every opportunity to use this to her advantage, including to get Laura’s attention. It doesn’t annoy Laura, because the smile on Carmilla’s face whenever she hears Laura laugh is a beautiful thing indeed.
Headcanon C: what is heart-crushing and awful but fun to inflict on friends: Laura has suffered enough, so I don’t like thinking about more bad stuff happening to her. That said, among the few headcanons I have about who Laura’s other parent would have been, I have one that fits here. Laura’s mother left her and her father when Laura was around 12 years old. No real explanation given. One day she was there, and the next her wardrobe was empty, her car gone, and only a note saying she was done left behind. Neither Laura nor her dad recuperated from that entirely. She never told anyone about her mother leaving. So when Carmilla left in s2, that brought back a lot of bad memories that were never really put to rest, only buried. In the library, in the dark and with Laura’s conscience eating away at her for all the mistakes she’d made, she told Carmilla about it. Carmilla listened to her, quiet and attentive, offering silent support. It didn't make everything better, but it was a start.
Headcanon D: what would never work with canon but the canon is shit so I believe it anyway: Laura is wolfblooded. Either a werewolf or something close to it. She’s the kind that is born a lycanthrope, but her father isn’t one. Thus, one more reason for him being so overprotective of her. Laura doesn’t know much, or anything at all really, about her heritage. She only knows that once every week, she has to run around as a wolf, and it’s best she doesn’t let anyone see her. When she arrives at Silas, the woods around the campus prove perfect for that purpose. Strangely, she keeps catching glimpses of some kind of big cat walking around the forest too.
Leliana
Headcanon A: what I think realistically: Leliana will be remembered as a pivotal historical figure, whether she’s Divine or not. She will be know as a skilled bard, a formidable warrior, and one of the main fighters for the better treatment of elves and mages. She’ll have an amazing legacy even by herself, but when the tales tell of her adventures with her lady Warden, both during the Blight and after, it’s the kind of stuff that legends are made of.
Headcanon B: what I think is fucking hilarious: Whenever she and Zevran were on guard duty together, they’d pass the time by telling every dirty joke in their native languages they could think of. Even tho Leliana took a little while to trust him, these nights made a strong friendship begin between them.
Headcanon C: what is heart-crushing and awful but fun to inflict on friends: Nope, canon has fucked Leliana over more than enough, as far as I’m concerned, she’s living happily with her lovely warden and their army of nug children.
Headcanon D: what would never work with canon but the canon is shit so I believe it anyway: It would totally work with canon, but Bioware would never do it. One of Leliana’s parents, probably her mother, was an elf. Both she and Alistair can see ridiculously well in the dark, for a human, and this gives Zevran and an elf Warden pause. My Tabris brings it up during one of their shared nights on guard, and Leliana confirms it to her. After they get together, and after the Blight is dealt with, Tabris takes Leliana to the Alienage often, and there Leliana learns more about a side of her family she would never have really know otherwise.
Sera
Headcanon A: what I think realistically: Sera and Leliana have an informal archery contest going on. Whenever Leliana has some free time, and is in the mood to train her archery skills, Sera finds her and they get to shooting some targets together. They both give pointers and advice to the other, and that’s how their friendship starts. I really like the idea of Leliana and Sera becoming friends.
Headcanon B: what I think is fucking hilarious: I can’t beat Sera and her bees here, but I like the headcanon she sometimes joins forces with Leliana to prank everyone in Skyhold. They are an unbeatable team together, as Cullen learns after he asks his creepy questions about a mage warden to Leliana. Sera doesn’t feel sorry for him at all.
Headcanon C: what is heart-crushing and awful but fun to inflict on friends: I feel bad even thinking about it, cause Sera deserves nothing more than good things in her life. If a romanced Inquisitor dies because of the Anchor, Sera goes into a spiral that’s very hard to come back from. It’s only her desire for vengeance on Solas that keeps her going after it.
Headcanon D: what would never work with canon but the canon is shit so I believe it anyway: Again, this should be canon. Sera and the Inquisitor have the best fucking wedding ever. None of that crappy, half-assed cutscene we got. It’s a big party, where many of the companions helped make the food and preparations, Blackwall was the best man for Sera, Cassandra and Iron Bull cried, Vivienne has an amused, is also somewhat bittersweet, smile through it all, Dorian was ridiculously proud and happy for both of them, Varric though it was the best kind of wedding he’d ever seen, Cole couldn’t stop smiling because he was overwhelmed with all the love he could feel from Sera and the Inquisitor, and even Solas had to agree it was a very nice party. Leliana and Josephine helped with the planning, and honestly both cried a lot during it too. There was food laid out in big dining tables, everyone could take as much as they wanted, and no one was made to serve anyone else. There were so many red jennys there, and the family of the Inquisitor, whatever their background, came in full force. It was one of the best days in both of their lives.

oc ramble
this not that much oc detail as it does personal detail but i mean fuck it same thing
___humanz
my oc wil looks a lot like a youtuber i watch and i only just realized that no matter how many changes i implement they’re always going to be that “you copied this character” character. fuck it. they dont have that lil M hair split (you know the one) and also made less fucking white like geez what the fuck was up. still working on face because of first sentence but cant bring myself to do anything drastic. the “main” self insert
pox on the other hand has to deal with “first created to be a self insert to someone elses comic and thats why there so out of place compared to the rest and you’re just making excuses to keep them in your own story” character. made them the drunk to think i could forget and feel good if i THOUGHT ABOUT IT REAL HARd like i’d then be drunk im pretty sure every pre teen has done this. keep in mind im actually afraid of what drugs might do to me personally cause i have 0 self control and tend to think way too negatively ie think id actually gone done did it before the brain could tell me to fucking not. pink boy.
bailey is one of those excuses to explain why pox is there. kinda dealing with her own life in my sort of idealized view. knew a lot of shit but couldnt find words to make her smart so she just kinda looks the part i guess. i love her face tho. from her you notice i start to color code these characters like some Stuart little movie. kaffee kathy
sarah never really got fleshed out. bailey took over. to be fair sarah was kinda boring cause i was still in the mindset that i couldnt make a main character gay but because i am the main character and also became gay it just worked itself around out of that rabbit hole. she would be a antagonist really and be my selective self and try to convince myself my friends would stay even if i was a bit distant but lmao didnt work!! also didn’t prove myself i was straight either. two stones. pigeion gal
forget the last dudes name. think i based em around what i learned about amputees from the ww1 unit. boring. they were originally going to be the love interest for pox but looked bad in my style at the time and so i never drew them again. dont think i gave them any interest other than “I AM EDGE” vibe. also associated with a wolf?? bad boy
__weird ones
chugs was based on a dream that i had where wil (me) was just sorta on a train that had spheres of houses and i had to figure out ghost stories. it was really vivid and i wanted to make those characters so i did. holds a lot of memories and really what i focused on because going through a real life is super boring. took a lot of my high school kms idealization off me for thinking it would be end of the world if i did it. kinda bad when i say it like that, but it also got me thinking i had more friends than what i did. originally was male, but now nonbinary that associates male cause it makes it easier for others to understand her. judge came later as i finally got insp from fucking bayoding balls of all things to associate her to tranquility. shes kinda between all things, living/dead, positive/negative and never really decides for themselves cause its not decided by the balance of fate. a great hugger and powerful enemy
kind has always been a fuckin slender clone cause in high school the thought of a evil watching over me was scary and the thought of captial g God watching was never really my thing esp after what i expected vs what i got but i guess that fits them best cause they are that shitty in between cream of corn. in turn they sorta started my mindset bout the revenant thing. after i got a hang of the presenting gender thing i put a lot of thought into what “souls” would look like. how you feel over how you look cause i didnt want strictly humanoid characters but just enough to associate back to the living. if you notice i always draw him as a sharp swiss cheese person in a fluffy puffy shirt and i think that defines them well. candle supplier
milli is ironically one of my most original characters despite being 99% tube and hair lines but still based on the horrible experiences i have every valentines with three dif guys i couldnt decide feelings with so for that alone it doesnt get a free pass. also based on fear of what happens in those relationships whether physical or mental and god i just put every possible bad thought onto it. fuck it. also based off milipedes which creep me the fuck out and want me to remove my feet. classic white face in darkness jump scare.
memo is literally just old person who gives you the world changing quest. basically useless but also deals with a lot of my thoughts of how to deal with death and being forgotten but not really?
pawn created only because i made a cute design thinking of ren fairs in town. also got into making characters look goopy so thats what they became. and dreams where i would get lost and die at carnivals because i couldn't find my parents. little too literal. also had a “mom” that was literally a giant pawn. like in chess. original. would send them out to fight.
peobe was just created to be the counter part. really no other story than pawns gotta fight fuckin something. tried for a kajui twist story but never bothered to get into who could see what in the living world.
shame is epitome of lazy and focused design. so many fucking hours deciding where the mirror pieces will be placed over a loose shadow body. had a cat counterpart called empathy, also boring. now im sorta mulling over whether they should have a counterpart or not cause their creation was created on accident.
blight created by memo to try to figure out why any fuckin one of them is here. sorta side chaotic neutral character that might go over to evil. only speaks in rhymes but not metaphores cause thats boring and way too much writing for me to pay attention to. inspired by my intense desire to eat the test tubes whenever i thought that i was never gonna make it in science as a career cause really, i was fucking sad. still think about eating glass tho but at least its not readily available so w/e. still think im an idiot most of the time and i think of this character. judge would not like them, pity most likely. literally test tube baby i mean look at them.
thats all i can think of for now in this particular universe k bye
