In Japan, on Valentine’s Day, women give chocolates to men and a month later, on March 14th, the White Day, all the men who received presents must return the favor.

T/N: "Home" is a subsidiary company of Shueisha. "Ten de Shouwaru Cupid" is Yoshihiro Togashi's serial debut work, serialized in Weekly Shounen Jump from its 32nd issue in 1989 to its 13th issue in 1990. The chapters were collected into four tankoubon volumes between January and November 1990. A wideban re-release was published in three volumes from March to May in 1994 by Home Company. A bunkoban version was also published in two volumes on November 15, 2002.

T/N: Araki refers to the baseball pitcher Daisuke Araki. After being away for approximately 4 years due to injuries, he came back at the end of the 1992 season and helped the Yakult Swallows win the league championship after 14 years without winning a league title. Manager Nomura refers to the then supervisor of the Yakult Swallows team, Katsuya Nomura.

The song Togashi is singing is a reference to the famous hit "Arashi no Sugao" (The True Face of the Storm) by Shizuka Kudo, released in 1989. The beginning of the song says: "Wake up a storm and destroy everything…"

T/N: Detective Makoto Ishizuka, known as "Gori-san", is from the television detective series "Taiyou ni Hoero" (Roar at the Sun), which ran from 1972 to 1986. He is called by the nickname "Gori-san", short for gorilla, because of his tough personality.

Imagawa is a neighborhood from the Iogi Area, in Suginami City. Ogikubo, where Togashi's apartment and workplace were located at the time, is also a neighborhood from the Iogi Area.

T/N: TV Asahi's "Sunday Western Movie Theater" (Nichiyō Yōga Gekijō), as the name suggests, broadcast Western movies, mostly Americans, dubbed in Japanese on Sunday evenings. Nagaharu Yodogawa, the late Japanese film critic, was the host of the show until his death in 1998, and was known for closing each program with his signature line "Sayonara, sayonara, sayonara". After his closing lines, the song "So in Love" by Cole Porter was played as the ending theme of the show.

T/N: Togashi is talking about “The Sumida-gawa Fireworks Festival”, an annual fireworks display held on the last Saturday in July over the Sumida River, near Asakusa, Tokyo. Togashi’s residence and workplace at the time was in Ogikubo, more than 20km west from the Asakusa District.

Senko Hanabi (sparklers) is a traditional Japanese firework, usually used in the summer. It looks like a roughly 20 centimeter long, tightly twisted, rainbow-colored piece of tissue paper. The appearance of the sparks emitted changes as they burn down. There are 5 stages of burning called: bud, peony, pine needle, willow & falling chrysanthemum, and it lasts about 10 seconds.
