“carter, truth or dare.” steve asks his teammate, taking a swig from his beer. hes at a small get together with the basketball team. jason carvers dad is out of town so he told everyone to bring beer and come over.

its night and the june heat has turned into a cool breeze. nancy is at steves side, he had picked her up right after leaving bookstrordinary today.

“truth.” carter manages to slur out.

steve thinks for a moment. “alright. name the first girl you ever had a crush on.”

its a simple enough question. nothing mean or rude, and nancy leans in close against his side on the couch and takes a swig from steves beer.

hes happy. hes buzzed, nancy smells like lavender, he saw you today, and all is well.

“easy!” carter hiccups. “y/n henderson.”

steve freezes.

“y/n?” nancy finally says her first words tonight at the party.

“yeah, man. still kinda into her, but-but that guy… uh… joshua? jonah? i-i know it started with a j.” carter furrows his brows and concentrates really hard while in his drunken state. “anyways. that guy shes always with. cant talk to her. hes-hes weird.”

nancy chuckles. “his name is jonathan, but they arent together. steve says youre nice, maybe you should talk to her-"

“y/n doesnt like blondes.” steve interrupts, and then immediately wants to shove a foot in his mouth.

why the fuck would he say that?

carter hiccups again. “shes hot. id dye my hair for her.”

nancy pokes steves shoulder. “howd you know that?”

“we talk,” he takes another sip of his beer. “she likes guys who look like peter parker, sorry carter.”

the boy drunkenly waves him off and then stumbles towards the bathroom, leaving nancy and steve alone.

“does y/n really only like brunettes?” nancy asks, slight curiosity in her voice.

steve nods. “yeah, she mentioned it once or twice.”

hes lying.

youve never, ever told steve this.

what you have, however, told steve is that youve never been kissed.

in fact, you told him this today. steve kinda has been thinking about it nonstop.

and carter is nice, sure, but shouldnt your first kiss be with someone special? carters been hit in the head with more basketballs than steve can count. the guy is nice, but a complete idiot.

definitely not worthy enough to be your first kiss.

“interesting, hm.” nancy takes the beer from steves hand and then gets up from the couch. she extends her hand and when he accepts, she pulls him up. “c’mon, lets go dance.”

so they go and they dance and steve forgets about the fact that youve never been kissed. at least for a little while, at least.

and if carter the next day asks steve where you work, well. hes only being a nice guy when he tells his teammate that he doesnt know. you surely wouldnt want some dumb jock annoying you at work.

im never going to shut up about jonah and adam ever ever ever. i REFUSE to believe adams edgy ass doesnt miss jonah. jonah knew about adams dead mother and how he was searching for her, and jonah could only know that if adam had told jonah. adam DID open up to jonah at some point, being forced to or not, he did. he told jonah about his mother and most likely that he missed her and wanted to know why she was gone from his life. like they were supposedly 'best friends' for 2 years. i don't know how you can know someone for that long and spend so much time with them and actually hate them. that part could be from adams alternate half, but he's still half human too. he still has human emotions and thoughts. and jonah was the FIRST person to provoke guilt and sadness in him. when adam heard jonahs screams and cries he felt something outside of his alternate emotions. alternates are drawn to those types of things, but instead of that adam felt guilty. thats a HUGE deal. adam misses jonah and he wont say it because he spent 2 years hating jonah. he doesnt feel like he deserves to miss jonah.

just wanna get some thoughts out about april o'neil (mainly to hype up why i enjoy her in 87) so this is an analysis of writing her in each generation of shows.

1987 april o'neil is a character who i think has more agency than most of her counterparts, and i think it lies in the choice to make her a reporter.

i can understand where the negative sentiment about changing her career from scientist comes from, but hear me out. if we understand that the turtles as characters just kind of fall into plots, whether they have a history with it or not, it lets us understand that april is here because she's a key in the story.

so originally her story is that shes the assistant of baxter stockman, and he sets a trap to kill her, leaving her to be killed by mousers and saved by the turtles, but after that her life outside of anything turtle related is kind of... non existent. dont get me wrong, being an adult woman who takes in a bunch of teenage turtles makes her anything but boring, but in that concept (and other adaptations since then) we dont get a feel for what she could be doing if she wasnt around the turtles.

in 87 april her job as a reporter is central to the premise. she is the human they hang out with, and she has a day job, so her life becomes the turtles lives. the other humans in her life become the other humans in the turtles lives.

we have her boss Burn Thompson, who’s your typical J Jonah Jameson ‘get me a story on those mutant menace turtles’, giving her that classic Peter Parker role. he often tries to get her to do more feminine stories, which she always has to fight back against.

we also get her rival reporter and occasional camera man Vernon Fenwick, always trying to prove he’s better than her at their job, always trying to steal whatever story she’s on, always failing and proving that he is not as capable or brave as she is.

and we get the secretary and her best friend Irma, who contrasts to her character very well by being the more dorky and lovesick comedic counterpart to her assertive independent serious character. you fully believe these two women are friends in that workplace way, its very real.

certain aspects of these news room dynamics are great, like how despite all the turtle coms looking like radios, we give april one that looks like a compact mirror. why? because if she hears news of something the turtles should check out, when she calls them she gets to just look like shes checking her makeup. she gets to use the workplace sexism to her advantage.

another aspect is, why do the turtles have to save april? is it cuz people always kidnap her? no, its because she gets herself into trouble. shes always looking for a big story, shes not afraid of the bad guys. she goes looking for danger because shes a very capable person, and her becoming the big sister to the turtles, or maybe cool single aunt, feels very natural.

i love her, i love that she's kind of a loser with only work friends, that she doesnt date much cuz shes kind of a weirdo, i love that if she's not with the turtles we can imagine what she's up to. she feels very real, and she's not a character who could be replaced by an object, her life is central to that show. and i love that they dont need to make her a fighter or anything to do that, and its surprising coming from the oldest show.

so to go into the next two cartoons and this is not to dig on 03 or 12 as characters, but in both cases the writers dont really give us much perspective on what her life is or was outside of the guys.

in 03s case, shes that same comic april i mentioned earlier. but we know a lot more about casey in this show than we do her. we know she has the antique shop, and thats where she is, but who does she talk to? does she have friends? she has casey, but she knows him because the turtles know him.

in back story, we can assume her parents died, and we know her uncle went missing, and that the episode they found him we see she has a sister who's never come up before. but neither of those characters show up again after that. not even at her wedding. we see everyone in the turtles lives, we see everyone in casey's life (even his shitty cousin) but aprils family isnt there. so who is she she if she isnt around the guys? i guess she sells antiques. but does she have a life outside of that building? we also know she's a scientist, shes as smart as donnie, but where does she use that skill with computers outside of helping the turtles?

like shes still that same loser adult woman hanging out with turtles, this time shes taken up ninja training from splinter, and we know in the future shes going to found a tech company, but that feels more like flowery language about her, as opposed to getting to see her be someone interesting on her own.

and then in 12s case she's the only april i know who fails the sexy lamp test upon debut. shes kidnapped and the only reason the turtles go rescue her is because donnie thinks shes pretty. sure, we could say its because shes a person in need, but we all know that upon introduction she is love interest first, character second (as are.... most all of the women in that show). from that point, we know she has her dad, and unlike in the previous versions (including comics and movies) its april who has to stay with the turtles for a while, not the other way around. which on its own would be fine, but shes always sort of there. whats she up to? does she have her own interests? like in 03 when shes staying with the turtles for a bit after her shop blows up, we see she's butting heads with them a bit. same as when they stayed with her. but here she kind of just takes on whatever the turtles do, whatever they watch or are interested in. they also make her special. shes here because shes different. thats not bad on its own, but it means that she very much could be anyone, shes here not by her own choices leading her here, but because the plot is thrust upon her, not the turtles, as it has been in all other iterations.

this kind of comes to a head with the introduction of casey and irma into that show. on the surface you'd think, well there we go, she has human friends, those are hers and not the turtles friends, but they never properly introduce her or us to irma. they show irma calling her in one episode (and shes labeled 'weird-girl', so whats the story there?) and then when we meet her properly its so she can be a third body in the introduction of casey jones. the running gag of this is basically whenever april isnt around the turtles now, she's with casey and sometimes casey and irma, but we never understand why. and then youd think, well thats cool if april is who becomes friends with casey, and then casey is in the turtles lives because of her, but he actually just ends up following raphael home. they do make a point of making it so he's accepted because she's there, but he's never implied to be her friend more than the turtles'.

she invites irma along to a date with casey, neither irma or casey understanding why. is it because she doesnt want to date casey? maybe. but the writers never make her intentions clear to the audience, we're left speculating. irma comes up a few times more, always in more or less the same context, and often asking who are the mysterious friends you have besides me. i truly wish we could have seen any moments of why these two are friends, how these two are friends, what they do when april isnt with the turtles, before they pull the rug out from under us and show that irma? yeah she was actually a krang all along. and she was only here to get to the turtles. and it never seems to bother april much, besides the one outburst when it happens. to me it feels like she should at least... grieve this friend? that would be traumatizing. your only friend in your own world was never real.

i like that the farm house gets to belong to april again, as opposed to being casey's family farm, so that gives her something. but then we understand why when we're introduced to her mom. we think. a real kicker here is uh. we dont even know her moms name? she's just..... mrs o'neil. because she didnt really matter, she wasnt real. like her dad got a name (because reference), why cant her mom even have a name? a thing that bothers me here is, ok we know her dad kept getting kidnapped, or mutated, or became so traumatized that he never left the house, but we never even get that kind of basic family aspect to the first teenage april. the turtles, for better or worse, are her family in this show. thats her real support system. and its frustrating because two of the characters here just oggle her. whether its an episode where april could have a crush on donnie or casey back or not, the fact she's got no support or someone to talk to about it from someone outside of those characters brothers really sucks for her agency in this story. we never get to grasp how she feels about any of it. which is why i think those romances give people the ick, theyre things that could work if the show ever cared to tell us how april feels.

and then by the end she gets to be a kunoichi with telekinesis, a thing she got into because of the turtles, and a thing she just got to be because genetically shes special. i wish this april got to be a character who had things of her own that she could choose to be. like, she still lives above that same antique store from 03, maybe she could have had a family history there like 03, but even something simple as that is just an in name only reference. theres no part of her that feels like she chose to be it, or that there's anything about her life that isn't directly related to the turtles.

now we get to rise. and honstly, rise april is a breath of fresh air. she is a teen like the previous april, but shes also just as willing to get herself into danger by her own choices as 87. shes a fighter like 03 and 12, and unlike every other version, shes just here. we dont need to know how she got here, she's part of this family and you believe it.

we have our big sister april who's not only a loser who hangs out with turtles, but she's a complete weird magnet. she's overly excitable, very willing to get into fights, who has a strong sense of justice and getting into trouble to fix it. this series is more episodic like 87, so to just get the jist, episode one. april needs rescuing because why? she threw herself into a mystic portal to save a random creature. thats what sets the turtles off on their mystic adventure in the first place. because she put herself in harms way. and when they go to rescue her, shes actually fine. she finds them a place to get new weapons, she's the first one to run in and try to attack the villain. none of the guys ever coddle her or say "oh there goes april we have to rescue her", this time we have an april who is a fully capable fighter from the get go.

we see her school life, she doesnt have any friends besides a random guy who has a crush on her, and shes desperate to fit in. then we get sunita. we see exactly why these two are friends. it starts with april thinking shes found a normal kid at school, trying to prove to the guys she can be a normal teenager who doesnt need their weirdness, but as it turns out sunita is a yokai. shes from that same mystic world, but she didnt come into april's life because of the turtles, she came into her life because they like each other. they're just two weird girls who hang out, they like laser tag and rock shows, and we fully believe they are friends.

another aspect to her is her jobs, she's like jonesy from 6teen. she gets new jobs basically weekly, sometimes hijinks ensue, leading the turtles to an event unfolding around her, and keeps getting into trouble and getting fired, but this leaves her with a plethora of skills (and keys to random buildings or machinery good for you for not giving those back, respect).

then we also get to see an entire episode where the turtles dont appear, because its about her. we see her passion for helping the world, we see her disbelief in herself, and her ability to pick herself up. theres a moment where you think splinter is going to need to give her a pep talk, but she ignores him. she's got herself. she doesn't need to rely on the guys or splinter for her confidence, shes capable on her own.

then i think my favorite aspect here is about the finale, where we get this touching moment between her and karai where she doubts her place in the family, lamenting that she's not one of them. and its not one of the guys who tells her she is, it's karai. its another woman in this story. its the woman who's history this story has been leading up to, affirming april's part in her story. in their families story. and she gifts april her spirit. which leads her to go finding ,and in a way rescuing them, from their despair.

this april is a fully realized character, with a real place in the story. you never doubt it, but even if she wasn't you know exactly who she'd be without them. she's her own fully rounded character, and i love her so much. theres a reason people say she's definitively the best april, i wish we got to see more of her, i know we were supposed to get more, just like with everything from rise. but im glad she got to shine here.

so this is kind of why in terms of writing april, i think its interesting that the most agency we get for her, in my perspective, comes from the newest and oldest show.

basically to summarize and reiterate, all april's are good april's, some writers just care more to show us who she is than others.

cali pt. 2 is honestly so devastating because i cant even be mad at jonah or amy for what happened. They are both completely valid in their concerns

Amy feels like she could be rushing things the way she did with her previous marriage and that is completely understandable and makes total sense. of course if the last time you got married it ended badly you would feel like you could just be doing the whole thing over again. she's not a bad person for feeling this way and its just gutwrenching

and then jonah is uprooting his whole life to make this move, so obviously knowing that amy was getting cold feet would make him feel like hes not appreciated and hes doing this all for nothing, for someone who doesnt really care

and what makes it even worse is that they are both also coming from a place of deep love for each other.

Amy knows how unhappy her marriage was and how the divorce affected her, adam, and emma. of course she would never want that for jonah (and parker too). She loves him so much and is always seeing the good in him; her telling Jonah how she feels is an expression of that. She sees herself as the bad person in this situation for having second thoughts and stringing Jonah along(or at least thats probably how she feels). But the thing is shes not, and Jonah is in the same position as her.

Jonah loves Amy so, so much and he would never want her to feel stuck the way she was when she was with Adam. Knowing how Amy is feeling rushed, then Jonah feels like hes the bad person in this situation because hes holding her back.

it's just... they both love each other so much, which is partially why they even made the decisions they did. And the personal reasons they separate are completely valid and understandable, so its impossible to be truly mad at either one of them.

the hurt feelings on both sides of this situation and the incredibly strong underlying love is what makes the breakup so unbelievably devastating. both Jonah and Amy have undeniable concerns, and it just makes the whole situation feel so helpless, even though you know they love each other so much.

i dont think you ever posted about your "jon sees elias as jonah when he takes the archivist job" au but please start with that immediately 👀👀👀👀👀👀

so i dont think theres very much that i didnt say in the tags of the post i made about it (unless tumblr ate those for some reason)

but basically. yeah after jon takes the archivist position he starts seeing elias as jonah (at elias' age, not as like. a corpse in the panopticon). obviously he immediately realises that its jonah bcs, yknow, the guys paintings are everywhere.

i imagine jon's train of thought is something like this:

did my boss get possessed by jonah magnus -> no thats dumb ghosts arent real -> im having a psychotic episode -> surely id be seeing other symptoms -> what the FUCK is happening

so a huge amount of jon's desire to find the truth about the supernatural ends up focused on jonah. initially he's just doing research into the actual guy jonah magnus himself but that doesnt really get him anywhere because its not like jonah was like "dear diary im an eye avatar and im going to start putting my eyes into other people so i can be immortal" so he starts doing research into elias instead. which also turns out to be quite difficult just doing normal research.

luckily, jon and elias are decently friendly with each other (at least in early s1, which this would still be). so surely its not weird to try and make sure your relationship with your boss is positive. thats just common sense thats just cultivating a welcoming workplace environment or whatever. and ofc elias is like

bcs this is objectively great! jons leaning into the eye hes considering breaching elias' privacy to learn more about him and ofc hes flattered that jon is so focused on him in particular. so he allows jon to break into his office and look through his things and he pretends he isnt watching the entire time, and he casually mentions some flaws in his home security to try and spur jon into breaking into his house (which he doesnt. yet.)

they're sort of not-quite-dating - tim might joke about jon going on dates with elias and jon gets very flustered and denies it and elias is a little over affectionate in public just to see how jon reacts, but neither of them have any idea that jon's doing all of this just so he can figure out why his boss is (apparently) the founder of the institute.

then prentiss happens. then they find gertrude's body.

i dont think jon gets as paranoid as he does in canon - hes been less of an asshole since all of his focus has gone into researching elias and trying to figure out what the fuck happened. so while i think he does do some research into the archival crew, its mainly research into gertrude herself, and continuing his research into elias. now with added stalking!

and of course elias still doesnt care about the stalking because hes still 1. very happy jon is taking to the eye so well and 2. flattered that jon is so focused on him to the point of stalking him. in my heart i know elias considers stalking to be a form of flirting

s2 goes generally the same but i want jon to find out about the not-them just a little sooner so i can make him go "holy shit! elias got not-them'd! what the fuck!" of course this is completely incorrect if you know anything about how the not-them works but jon. doesnt.

jon, of course, breaks the table. then he finds out that sasha got not-them'd. then he finds out leitner is alive. then he finds out leitner is dead.

who else does he have to go to? he shows up at elias' home, maybe just minutes after elias finishes cleaning up, because a man has been killed in his office and he didnt do it.

because i am a soft elias truther s3 isnt just manipulation and horrible things happening for jon. horrible things still do happen (elias very much doesnt discourage him from talking to jude perry, or mike crew, for example) and elias is still a bastard but its probably not any significant amount more horrible than canon s3 was.

jon probably spends amounts of time talking to elias about what leitner told him (which is hilarious to elias) and elias (against his better judgement) doesnt tell jon that leitner was lying, but instead asks him questions that may or may not lead him to figuring out the entities. he's curious as to what's going to happen, and he's sure jon likes him enough that showing just a little of what he knows wont tarnish their relationship

i dont have many thoughts beyond that - the confrontation probably goes differently, for example, and maybe jon permanently moves in with elias. i cant decide how much of a corruption arc i should give jon (obviously he ends up much more content with the eye than in canon bcs the eye is sexy but i cant decide if hes pro apocalypse or not) but when jon finds out that elias is jonah hes like "oh i know" and jonah is like what the fuck do you mean

gwen!!! i love gwen. i think she’s fascinating. she’s normal - she’s fucked up. she’s empathetic - she detaches from the people closest to her. she loves rhys - she loves jack. she knew torchwood was toxic - she joined anyway. she’s just a really fleshed out, grounded character, akin to some of the doctor who companions imo, but because it’s torchwood she gets to be a little more of a straight up asshole - i love it. i think she’s a brilliant character. and she’s also adorable and funny and badass and gorgeous and sweet and lovely and a little bit deranged. i adore her. 

my fav gwen moment would have to be when she retconned rhys in combat 😭 HEAR ME OUT. that’s the moment i was like ‘oh holy shit she’s fucked up’ and that made me feel compelled by her... she’s since become my second fav character and i think if that scene didn’t exist she wouldn’t have reached that point for me. esp because it established her as a certain type of fucked up, you know? her cheating on rhys wasn’t nice, but it was interesting. i think her struggles with emotional faithfulness and how easily she was pushed into sexual infidelity from stress and isolation make her interesting. her and owen are psychological marvels to me, in the best way fshdfkjds they’re both really fascinating characters with really interesting and, bafflingly, well-done trauma responses. listen, i like rhys a lot, and i pity him, but my main issue with that plot is less that she did it in the first place and more that that plotline was never given closure. i don't rlly have much interest in condemning cheating as it exists in fiction, it's just a plot device to me so it doesn't register as particularly immoral when done by characters (as in, it doesnt make ME hate them; i know some people think it's a Grave Sin) - but i do think rhys did deserve better than never being offered transparency in that regard. but i don’t blame gwen herself for that, so much as i blame the writers.

and then aside from that, i have several fav gwen-being-cute moments, because she’s like a fluffy little creature to me fhsdkj there’s something about eve’s tooth gap i think and the way they do her hair, and those big ol’ eyes…. i want to keep her in my pocket. i love the handful of times her and owen goof off, i love her crying pizza scene, i love the scenes where she’s being playful with rhys, i love her reactions when she's talking to emma about sex in out of time (eve’s comedic acting is so funny too btw like some of the faces gwen makes at shit kills me. shes just so tangible she looks and feels like a real person you’d be friends w like thts gwen my friend gwen)... i love the way she bonds with female characters, idk why that was something that really stood out to me like she way she bonds with other women, i love it. with jonah’s mom and with beth... in an era where women were pitted against each other a lot (we see it happen w her n tosh in, like, countrycide a little), it's nice they subverted that. i love when women take care of each other. nice little thing to include in tw of all shows.

my least favorite gwen moment… i can’t really think of one of the top of my head? OH i know. the way she treats andy in adrift bothered me a bit. i think the concept of ‘torchwood’s changed you, you’re crueler now’ is brilliant, but it’s a little more personal between them, and she's unnecessarily a bit condescending w him, so it rubbed me a little wrong. but torchwood in s1 were meant to be cocky so ig maybe that could've rubbed off on her too... but the show doesn't suggest that so eh.

i don’t think i have any unpopular opinions, other than i think she’s a great character + she’s very likeable and compelling, and i think gwen bashers are misogynistic morons ❤️ oh also! i think she’s just as bisexual as the other three, she’s just not as tapped into her attraction to women. gwen to me is a “when i was a kid i used to stare at my best friend and think about how pretty she was… but that’s normal right i mean thats just loving your friend right. feeling warm when you brush her hair at a slumber party is normal right” type of wlw fsdkjfd. i think she emotionally latches onto women (like i said we see this happen in the show) but she’s just gone through life assuming she’s straight so she never clocked herself as having the capacity for that emotional attachment to be something romantic instead. not unlike pre-gbg tosh.

fun headcanons… her and owen are besties. this is canon as far as im concerned but i’d like it to be even More. they just sort of have a surprisingly easy rapport, like they enjoy each other's company (somewhat surprisingly, given their contrasting personalities) and are weirdly in sync esp in s2, but they also poke and prod at each other. they have a shiv & roman from succession relationship to me - “hey slut” “hey f-g” HFSDKJFHDKJ do you see. do u see my vision. but before they can ask any dave goes "dammit im gonna be late to the church" which makes adam panic and go "you absolutely cannot go there" and then he just. refuses to elaborate and now his friend are also vaguely going "yeah dont go to church"

obviously this is Weird so they go "right car theft forgiven your all coming with us what the fuck is going on" and they are refusing to give answers while staying at daves house for the next few days

dave doesnt mind and is happy to have people over so hes just trying to play host and having fun while also trying to contact o'brien who strangely is ignoring him

thatcher starts coming over again for the first time in years cause he also wants to know what the fuck is up with these kids and uh

he gets his answer :)

ANYWAY MOVING ON this ones gonna be a doozy ill tell you that >:)

adam killed someone for the first time when he was 15, and what he really remembers of it is the aftermath of six basically going "finally, you became one of us so young yet took so long to do this i thought youd disappoint me again and not do it, im so proud of you" cause yknow the desperation for parental affection weve all been there

it was someone in yonder county, he doesnt remember the details exactly of how the house looked from the outside, but he does remember the interior like the back of his hand

single bedroom bungalow with a really tiny bathroom, no tub, the fridge hummed incredibly loudly and they always turned the stove off at the wall for some reason, they didnt really have room for a living room but they had a nice recliner in the tiny space anyway, and a stack of books beside it, there was a lil storage space inbetween the bathroom and bedroom in which the owner kept a vacuum and cleaning chemicals

adam had let himself into the house a few days prior and had gone unnoticed, keeping himself to the little storage space, moving lil things around the house to make them doubt things

he then cornered them in the kitchen, just like hed been taught to do, and he doesnt remember he had the knife first or if they had it out but he knows he pushed it through their neck until it came out the other end

and then, despite the praise he got for it, after it was done he found himself feeling weird about it, it wasnt quite sadness and it wasnt quite guilt but it was bad whatever it was

thinking about how so much of mental health recovery is self forgiveness and allowing yourself to move on and how (having been raised in religious shame structure) not being able to can really trap you into patterns if you don’t. im about to make this about that vampire show lmao. i tried not to. i didn’t even expect this. i was gonna just do a to delete personal post. but whatever. you don’t have to read. but, there’s so much shame in being unwell. all religion teaches you in that anyone of “sin” is deserving of instability, of punishment, unhappiness of hell. then religions tell people to turn that voice inwards and name it their governing god voice. thats so damaging.

my mind is whizzing with religious trauma thoughts in amc iwtv. as well as mental health aspects given how i’ve been and i haven’t really done wtf your call this in a while and i’m really too shrouded in the shame of being unwell to even feel like i should say anything at all anymore. i’m pushing through bc that’s honestly the problem.

that’s what i see reflected in louis. suffering silently bc you might be the hell you can’t escape bc the magnitude you’re experiencing it makes you feel like you must deserve it. if it’s you then what else could there be. doesnt seem like even what’s good can come without hell-in-tow. in his line of work, in his life with his family, in the only way he could be with jonah, in lestat, in claudia. hell is always right there where the good things are. and then everywhere you look the thought is it’s reinforced. religion indoctrinates in you that good is for those who are pure. louis was never afforded pure. even tho it’s actually an injustice and pure is a tool for exclusion and hatred etc. etc. sometimes even when you know that, even when you have the awareness of how unfair it is to be held to a standard never meant for you, it doesnt mean shame isnt effective.

im thinking about shame and self-flagellation in louis. someone on here once pointed out how louis might have thought he was really losing it where lestat was concerned, with all his tricks, and how that was probably why he didn’t want to look at it head on. i get that observation bc of the shame and i also get the appeal and seduction of just letting the mind go with whatever it is if you’re receiving something you’ve been starved of for a long time. bc sometimes losing your mind feels like chains falling and bounds expanding. and it’s all so alluring especially when the state of your mind is as a result of the rigidness of society and life around you. and then the shame that comes for what you perceive yourself to have allowed when things go to hell. especially when it seems like hell is a rapid endless thing with infinite ways to show you all you ever wanted decay before your very eyes bc trauma is death and death is trauma and this is the death and trauma show.

and religions determine what death is in your mind’s eye. and religious shame is a spider cocooning you and telling you to think yourself a butterfly all the while. how do you forgive yourself from there? and if you can’t can you even look at the full scope of your situation? what if the shame is a dead brother, a town burning, estrangement with relatives, abuse/victimhood, a dead sister/daughter all things that were core values to have a certain way. all things that you defined yourself by and the good times (sarcastic) keep on rolling. what hurts the most sometimes is what you did or didn’t do. idk that i have anything else to say. im getting to the point within myself where i keep thinking “who even cares” so imma stop here. bc i’d like to share before i convince myself to delete. but just if your out there struggling with mental health shit i hope you forgive yourself for things you’re holding onto out of shame. not even just as a self kindness but also bc you deserve to and progress is hindered if you dont in my opinion. i am not a professional. this is simply from what i’ve experienced/observed. if you got beef with yourself and you prefer to take it to your grave. do your thing. im just a username on this thing.

putting it under a thing tho in case you dont wanna read it bc i dont wanna be annoying

(quick warning for implied mental abuse as well as mental health struggles in general)

so basically, vol 333 happens, ruth is dead, and thatcher already encounters the alt at the end of the episode. he goes home to not risk seeing it again only to find that it followed him home after dispatching to other officers that thatcher "made a mistake" and that "everything's fine here at that station". turns out, the alternate is suddenly fascinated with thatcher and wants to get to know him more (mostly as a ploy to replace him later).

well, a few years go by, thatcher's mental health has only been going down the drain. constantly drowning himself in work and only distracting himself by watching the same old black n white movies. the alternate, who he has named "davis", is kinda just there, and he usually flip flops between being a weird cat and thatcher's sleep paralysis demon constantly degrading and berating him for the things he couldnt do back in '92. he knows he flip flops too, and it's to make thatcher think nothing of his shitty behavior.

dave still visits him a lot, and thatcher kinda locks davis in his closet when dave comes over so he doesnt see him. davis always hates it though and gets really antsy and aggressive during those times. going back to thatcher n dave though, dave always tries to get thatcher out of the house more, but thatcher always refuses. he only goes out for necessities like food and water as well as for work.

he had been writing letters to ruth ever since she died. the letter heard in vol 4 was one of the first he ever wrote to her. and he still to the day of vol 4 still goes by the old murray house and stands right outside. some days he braves himself up to go to the porch. he always runs back to his car out of breath and with tears though, never being able to get over that night.

davis sometimes follows him there, always giving thatcher a good scare whenever he does. thatcher always gets defensive and worries that he might be seen though, and not even davis knows why he worries about that.

i also imagine that whenever thatcher is busy w like dave or on the phone at hime, whenever davis makes a ruckus thatcher says "sorry, that's my roommate", hence why it's called the roommate au.

anyways, dave does also end up dying, and davis knows immediately through some weird alternate shenanigans. but he doesnt tell thatcher for him to find out himself. i imagine that if/when he finds out he's devastated, and davis just says nothing, letting him grieve.

however, on the bright side i do imagine that evelin survives being at the station and somehow finds thatcher's address. still planning this part out, but think they end up having a good relationship. and evelin knew dave, so they bond over that as well and i just want those two to be a sort of father-daughter relationship and it would be so wholesome and happy and would make thatcher smile after so long and <33333

Oo, whats the new au about?

OK OK SO. adam and jonah’s parents are sending them to this. overnight camp for three months called mandela overnight (well, adams dad is sending since his mom is. yk).

theyre both really into ghost stories and stuff, so when they hear this rumor about the spirit of the past owner of the camp haunting the campgrounds they jump on it and shenanigans ensues (spoiler alert, its not a ghost. hehehe)

now with the characters:

Adam: troublemaker of the campground. hes a little bit of an asshole, with his investigations getting in everyone’s way. he might be on to something though, and someone doesn’t like that

Jonah: he’s kinda like the class clown. he doesnt take ghosts and the paranormal as seriously as adam does, so he’s mostly just goofing off and mostly the one doing the pranks. he’s also really into arts and crafts

Evelin: they’re (kind of) an apprentice to one of the counselors, Dave. she’s really good with tech, but mainly making random gadgets on the go. she always looks like shes been shocked.

Sarah: one of the older campers. she’s in charge of the main trio (who all sleep in the same cabin) and she has. many weapons in her bag that she snuck in. there wasnt that much sneaking in she needed to do, but its weird there were absolutely no mirrors allowed. like theyre trying to hide something

Cesar: he’s a C.I.T. (counseler in training) and he is. very chaotic. does not check any camper’s bag, ever, and is very lax with the rules. this will have consequences

Mark (yes i didnt kill him for once): also a C.I.T., and he’s tried to dissuade sarahs many attempts to sneak weapons in. he wont tell gabriel though, she’s still his sister.

Dave: a camp counseler, he’s in charge of the radio and he teaches campers how to make little robots with a toothbrush and a motor. Evelin’s a returning camper who he (unofficially) made in charge of most of the tech-related activities at the camp

Ruth: another camp counseler, she’s in charge of arts and crafts, and she has a daughter in another section of the camp for the younger kids

Thatcher: also a camp counseler, in charge of generally supervising the kids. he always has dark rings under his eyes and no one knows why he still works here

Gabriel: The owner of the camp. rumors have gone around his brother (the past owner of the camp) didn’t actually give up the camp and gabriel did something to him. this is untrue, and spreading rumors about people is rude :)

mandela catalogue story thoughts

alright time for more rambles, im gonna explain my understanding of and best guesses about tmc, if anyone sees this who things i got anything wrong or who knows more, please tell i wanna know. so in 1981, the first reports of alternate encounters begin, and the first basic understanding is formed about alternates, with the first warnings broadcast. a couple years before this, a young mark heathcliff is made his "scary night" story, around the intruder, which may have been the first ever report or sighting of an alternate in any form/capacity. then, in (as far as i can tell) a seperate incident, in september 1992, cesar's mum was attacked by an alternate, and so cesar takes her to the hospital and asks mark to head over and turn on the cams. mark does so before leaving, but the alternate was still in the house at the time and followed him home, where it then sat outside his door for days until he y'know, unalived on 15 september 1992. After mark's prolonged absence from school, one of his teachers alerts the police with a voicemail, and thatcher heads over to investigate, and discovers mark's body on 21st september 1992. sometime after this, the situation with the murrays occurs which results in baby adam (would be 3 or 4) being abducted, lynn committing die and jude disappearing in one way or another. personally im running into a lot of what seems like conflicting information in/about this section so i cant yet clearly understand the timeline, but that's the result. somewhere along the line, an investigator attempts to check out the house but 'pussies out', however a volunteer is able to set up some in house cameras, though despite what we see in intruder alert, thatcher doesnt see any anomalies with the findings and so has to conduct an investigation with weaver. when they check the house out, the alternate created by adam whilst watching stanley on the tv is still there, and kills weaver during the investigation. thatcher then flees for the station, but the alternate follows him there, and assaults and assimilates him as we see in the end of 333, though thatcher doesnt seem to be physically injured by the encounter, only mentally. following this, thatcher goes into hiding in an attempt to escape the alternate, and because of this, we think everyone else assumes he is dead.

in 2007, mark's sister, sarah, who was only 3 at the time of mark's death, starts the bythorne paranormal club in an attempt to understand more about what happened to her brother. adam, now 19, joins the club as well, bc he freaky as fuck idk what the hell going on with that guy im ngl, but i think the abduction might have a part in why he's like this, and he might have been under the guise of even gabriel/false shepard/literal devil himself when he was missing, although that said he failed the toddler assessment review before this even happened so i dont think we have enough info yet. anyway, him and sarah conduct their first mission on 14-15 july 2007, in which adam makes shit get crazy and sarah decides "yk what, ill just do admin and look at results instead of getting them myself", and so adam hires jonah as his new partner. vol 2 then takes place in mid january of 2009, resulting in the death of jonah but not adam, who walks for miles in the cold so he can steal his dead friends car lmao. and i dont fully understand what happens with him and the guy at the end of 4 tbh, thats the one part i cant come up with a theory for. all i know is that he is absolutely the mandela prophet.

meanwhile, evelin looks through dave's tapes, and i think the reason dave always wears sunglasses is because they protect from the effects of the alternates interacting with those tapes. knowing that evelin wouldnt have looked at these tapes with shades, he is kinda forced into firing her,or at least not being around her too much, as she could theoretically summon an alternate to their location at any time with the wrong stimuli. however during this time, dave has been speaking with a friend named o'brien, who has effectively been opening dave's eyes to the potential wonders of life outside of chasing alternates, and because of this dave decides to basically retire from the alternate stuff. eventually he agrees to meet o'brien outside of the church, to intiate whatever post-alternate plan they had been working on, and so he phones thatcher on short notice and just tells him that he's leaving. imo this is going to be a big fucking problem for thatcher, as he doesn't know nearly as much as dave did about alternates and might struggle to go alone, with potentially only evelin to work with. oh and also there is now an all powerful being after him. either way, dave goes to meet o'brien outside the church, however to his absolute fucking horror, o'brien was actually gabriel all along, posing as a friend to deter him from learning too much about the alternates, and most importantly luring him right into gabriel's trap - despite his wealth of knowledge and experience with alternates, he still managed to follow the shepard. ok i definitely missed some detail stuff but i think this gets the majority of the important plot points, even if theyre probably all horribly wrong lmao. if anyone wants to correct me on stuff or tell me things i might not know, go ahead!

Confusion and Confessions

Garret Mcneill x Reader

"younger reader liking garrett but she thinks he doesnt like her back so she lets jonah or marcus take her on a date and garrett confesses"

You liked Garret. You really did - and you had since the day you started at cloud 9. Yet, he'd never seemed to notice, at least as far as you were aware.

Prior to now, you'd spent days, weeks - even months - waiting for Garret to notice your affections and ask you out, as you were too concerned about getting rejected to act on your feelings yourself. So when Marcus asked you out, you decided their was no harm in going out with him, especially when Garret would never see you as more then a friend.

"I just don't understand, why would you want to go out with him?" Garret asked, deeply confused and seemingly stressed by the fact you had agreed to go out with Marcus.

"The dude's sweet enough," You defended, folding your arms across your chest. "Besides, It's not like I'm going to get any otherwise. God knows all I do is work."

"So you're just going out with the guy to get laid?" Garret asked, surprise filling his words.

"Oh, get off my dick." You snapped back at the man who sat beside you, fed up with his criticisms of your date. "Marcus is nice. And who cares if I'm going out with him to get laid? You certainly shouldn't be one to judge."

Pushing away from where you had leant against the customer service counter, you stood up, ready to leave Garret as his attitude was not amusing you today. If he had such an issue with it, he should have asked you out instead. But he hadn't.

"I'm just saying, y/n. You could do better." Fed up with Garret's constant criticism, especially after Marcus had been nothing but sweet to you since he'd asked you out, you began to walk away.

"I'll see you tomorrow Gare. I've got to go and get ready for my date." Waving goodbye to him, you turned around headed for the breakroom to get your things before making your way home to get ready for what you were sure would be a good night. 

Unfortunately, when wrapped up in your own thoughts and anger at Garret, you didn't see as he watched your retreating form longingly until you were completely out of his sight - wishing it was him who was taking you out tonight instead.

Brushing the fallen strands of hair out of your eyes, you looked yourself up and down in the mirror once more, making sure you looked good for your date with Marcus tonight. Though you didn't particularly mind what the outcome of your time tonight was, you still wanted to impress the man who had asked you out.

Smiling at your reflection, you smoothed out the fabric of your dress, pulling your bag onto your shoulder and picking up your phone which then buzzed in your hand.

Marcus <3 | I'm outside! Can't wait to see you ;)

A blush covered your cheeks, taking a second to breathe, you slipped your phone into your bag before quickly walking out of the front door. Marcus was leant against the side of his car, a single pink carnation held loosely between his fingers, which he rolled back and forth between his forefinger and his thumb. Looking up from where he had been staring intently at the floor his eyes met yours, his mouth dropping open slightly as he took in the sight before him.

"You look beautiful." Marcus complimented, though his words came only barely above a whisper due to the awe he was captured in. He suddenly scrambled to stand up straight, taking a step closer to you and offering you the flower he had brought with him, before running around to the other side of his car and opening the door for you. "M'lady."

You let out a quiet laugh, a hand coming up to cover the smile that was covering your face at his very serious use of the formality. Holding the flower delicately, as though not to damage it, you walked around the side of his car, placing a gentle hand against his chest as you now stood right in front of him. "Thank you my lord."

Climbing into Marcus's car, you watched as he ran around to the drivers side, hopping inside quickly, his excitement making him appear as though he was visibly vibrating inside the vehicle. With a final glance shared, you noticed Marcus had forgotten to plug in his seatbelt, so you leant across him, grabbing it and gently placing inside the socket. 

"There you go, nice and safe." You sheepishly smiled at him briefly, shifting back into you seat and looking out of the window, excited for what the night ahead of you may hold, especially when Marcus had already been so sweet to you and the night had barely begun.

"No way he said that! Really?" You cried, nearly stumbling over your own feet as you were laughing so hard at what Marcus had said, his story making you laugh so much your stomach hurt. However, you were quickly stabilized by Marcus's hand wrapping around your waist, pulling you into his side and helping you walk down the path as you continued to laugh.

"Yeah, really! It was hilarious!" You leaned more into Marcus side as you laughed once again, the conversation slowly dying down as you realised you had completed the walk back to your front door from the car, Marcus's story having filled the silence that may have otherwise remained.

Coming to a standstill at your front door, you both stood facing each other, a slightly awkward silence filling the distance between the two of you, Marcus's hand having slipped from around your waist to hold your hand in his bigger, warmer one.

"I had a good time tonight." He admitted, his thumb brushing over your knuckles as he rocked back and forth on the balls of his feet anxiously. "Did, um- well, did-"

"I had a great time Marcus. Really." Your response was earnest, having had more fun tonight then you had had in a long time, not just in the realm of dating, but in general.

"Well, maybe we could do it again sometime? Or something? If not though I totally understand." The blushing mess before you made your stomach fill with butterflies, Marcus's words being vulnerable and genuine, him seemingly worried that you wouldn't want to see him again despite the amazing night he had made for you.

"I would love to." You confirmed, leaning up and placing a light and delicate kiss on his cheek, lingering there just a moment longer then you should have, revelling in this strange, new thing you were feeling.

"Goodnight Marcus. Thank you." Slipping away behind the safety of your front door, you slammed it behind you, leaning against it and slipping down to the floor. You hadn't felt so overwhelmed from being on a date - in a good way - in a long time, and it was all too much, the butterflies beating against your stomach making you feel sick. Unbeknownst to you, Marcus was experiencing something not all that different only on the other side of the door, still in the spot you had left him, his hand hovering over the ghost of a kiss you had left upon his cheek.

You couldn't wait to tell Garret about it in the morning.

"Who rained on your parade?" Jonah asked, sitting down in the seat next to Garret, the seat usually occupied by you. Scouring his eyes across the breakroom for you, he finally found you, sitting at a different table, with a different guy then usual and seeming to be enjoying it all too much. "Oh."

"I still don't get what she sees in him." Garret scowled, his knuckles turning white due to the tight grip he had on his mug of coffee, fuming at the sight before him. He had hoped he'd said enough before to convince you to not go on that stupid date, but now watching as the two of you laughed and joked together, he'd wished he'd done everything he could've to stop you.

Garret hated how you looked at him: your cute little smiley-eyed expression that he had thought was reserved just for him, the way your hand rested against his arm without thought which you usually did with him when he'd told a joke you couldn't hide your laugh at, the way you were sharing your morning in the breakroom over a coffee with Marcus and not Garret as you had done like tradition everyday since you began here.

Garret felt as though he had been replaced overnight - and he didn't like it one bit.

"Should've made a move while you had the chance." Jonah chastised, waving at you over the brim of his coffee as you looked around the breakroom and made eye contact with him. "God knows she likes you, even I can see that. And If I didn't know better, I'd think you liked her too."

"No, I- I never-" Garret's attempted defence was cut short as you shouted Jonah over to you, wanting him to hear the story Marcus was telling you, thinking he'd like it.

"Duty calls." As Jonah walked away, joining you with a wide smile and an awkward side hug, Garret made the decision he had been dreading, knowing that if he didn't say something sooner rather then later, he would probably loose you for good.

"Done avoiding me now are you?" Garret asked as you approached the customer service counter, him seeing you without Marcus by your side for the first time so far today. Quirking your eyebrow at him, you continued towards the counter he sat at, taking your usual spot leaning against the ledge of it and looking slightly over your shoulder at him.

"I could never avoid you Gare - what are you on about?" The man before you let out a deep, frustrated puff of air, his shoulders dropping and a frown settling on his face. 

"Where's thing two?"

Oh. So that's what this is about?

"Are you still being grumpy that I agreed to go out with Marcus? Seriously?" Standing up straight you turned to fully face Garret, folding you arms across your chest and glaring at him in disbelief. "I don't understand why you can't just be happy for me? I had a great time and Marcus is so sweet to me, so what is your issue?"

"It's not that Y/n I just-"

"Well it sure seems like it. This is the first time I've gone out with anyone and actually enjoyed it in years. You know how I feel about this kind of shit." You cut Garret off abruptly, anger completely consuming you as you couldn't believe you had been so foolish as to think that your best friend would ever be happy for you. "And it's not fair for you-"

"You're right its not fair for me!" Garret cut you off this time, for some reason upset at what you had said as though it wasn't the truth; as though you hadn't spent the last few years waiting around for him to notice you, as though it was bad for you to be happy about a date going good, as though he wasn't acting like a dick. "Because it should be me."

What?

"I should be the one talking you out, and walking you back to your doorstep and kissing you before I go, and bringing you flowers or whatever. Whatever he did I can do, and I can do it one hundred times better! It's not fair that he gets to have you when you're all I want."

"Gare-"

"Don't pity me." Garret snapped, his harsh tone cutting you off before you could even begin to admit you felt the same about him. "I can clearly see you're more then happy in your current situation."

"I think I'm In love with you." You whispered out, Garrets demeanour immediately dissolving at the sheepish tone you used, suddenly very aware of close you had gotten to each other despite the counter separating you. "I mean, you're like the coolest person I've ever met, and you've always treated me as an equal, even when others treated me as though I was a kid just because I'm younger. You're my best friend, and I would kill for you to be more - if that's what you'd have me be."

"Well then, you better go and cancel any second date plans you've made." Garret commanded, his hand reaching out to intertwine with you own, his thumb rubbing back and forth over your knuckles. "'cause I've got to take my girl out on a date."
