I couldn't make you jealous if I tried. You couldn't care less if I stayed out all night. I don't even look into your eyes 'cause the truth is I don't even care if you're lying. In this bed we might as well be across the ocean tonight. We don't yell, 'cause what the hell difference would it make? We don't cuss and we don't care enough to even hate. We could tear up the house, we could burn the whole thing down. But, boy, what for? 'Cause we don't even fight anymore.
We Don't Fight Anymore (feat. Chris Stapleton) by Carly Pearce

Something I was looking into a while back was the rise of the cintiq(or just tablet monitors in general) and also how/when digitally painted BGs overtook physical BGs. (not the first digital elements, but when did they replace the main BG workflow) Flat graphics tablets had been around for a long time, and 2 of the guys I work with said that they were shown an early version of a tablet monitor at Fox/Bluth in the late 90's, but it was not really viable yet. They said it was a big CRT mounted in an animation desk, the glass was really thick and the brush lag made it unusable.
Tumblr media
On the Wacom website, the earliest consumer version I could find is from 2001. The biggest one, at 15 inches, was $4000 at the time.
Here in the Lilo & Stitch extras, you can see Dean Deblois working on a CRT version in 2001. Looks like the wacom logo on the top corner or the monitor too.
Tumblr media
As I understand it, the Disney sequel studio in Australia had replaced physical BGs with digitally painted BGs in around 2003-4 before Disney feature animation. Honestly it looks pretty good! The brushes at the time lacked texture, so some of the softer stuff looks a little airbrushy, parts of the image that should be more defined (the plane where the characters are), look a little too soft at times. Overall pretty good though, I would be proud if I painted stuff like this anyway.
Tumblr media
WDFA were still using physical BGs for Home on the Range
Tumblr media
And once they came back for the Princess and the Frog, they were using Photoshop. Some animation and cleanup was also done digitally at this time.
Tumblr media
The cintiq 21UX was $2500 at this time. Accessible to some professionals but not most. This version was widely used in the flash era, and it's the first version I ever saw. Now I use a 500eur Huion tablet at home and don't even think about the difference between it and the cintiq I use in work. Anyway I just wanted to do a little look back at these things that are now ubiquitous in the industry and how they ended up covering every desk

Okay, that was a *huge* drop of animated movie news from the Mouse House...
The takeaways...
MOANA 2, previously being developed a Disney+ series, is WDAS' 63rd film. Opening November 27, 2024.
ZOOTOPIA 2 is being released in 2025. No concrete date.
TOY STORY 5 and FROZEN III are being released in 2026. Again, no concrete dates for these, either. ELIO stays where it is.
So... My questions:
Walt Disney Animation Studios opened a unit in Vancouver to make Disney+ shows, MOANA 2 - when it was a series - was the one project that was announced as theirs. With Disney looking to lay off Pixar staff who were involved with that studio's Disney+ projects, following the losses that streaming is accumulating for big bad Disney, my concern is... What happens with this studio? Does it get closed down like Pixar Canada was back in 2013? Or do they continue, and function similarly to the Orlando unit that Walt Disney Feature Animation opened in 1989 but closed down in 2003? Before shutdown, WDFA-Florida went from making shorts and helping out on movies to graduating. They were making features on their own by the end of the 1990s, making three total: MULAN, LILO & STITCH, and BROTHER BEAR. They had a fourth film deep in development - A FEW GOOD GHOSTS - before the wing was closed down.
It appears I might have an answer here. These screenshots imply that WDAS-Vancouver is making MOANA 2. Or it's a co-production of sorts (hat-tip NCLuke1024 on twitter for these):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since WDAS' slate is gummed up with three sequels, all opening one year after another, I think it'd be smart to have that second studio stay open so they could possibly get both one of those sequels and an original movie out in the same calendar year. Speaking of which...
ZOOTOPIA 2 and FROZEN III were not given concrete dates. Currently, WDAS has the dates 11/26/2025 and 11/25/2026 locked. Would this mean three sequels in a row for them? MOANA 2, ZOOTOPIA 2, FROZEN III... Hmmmm, that would be a little too much... Like, why can't WDAS slot an original movie for like spring 2025 so that ZOOTOPIA 2 can get that Thanksgiving slot? They'd have to have the staff and resources for that, though... Again, what's up with the Vancouver house? What's going on with Suzi Yoonessi's movie? Josie Trinidad's movie? Marc Smith is hinted to be FROZEN III's director, if so, then that answers that question. I bet FROZEN III, given that the first two were Thanksgiving movies and have a very cold word as their title, is the 11/25/2026 movie. Pixar has March and June 2026 locked. Speaking of which...
UPDATE 6:28 PM EST: Answered a half-hour later, ZOOTOPIA 2 is in fact the Thanksgiving 2025 movie... Welp, we'll see where the next original lands, then.
TOY STORY 5 having no concrete date. Since TOY STORY 3, TOY STORY has been a summer thing. I'd imagine Pixar uses the March slot for an original, like they did in 2022 for TURNING RED (summer 2022 was LIGHTYEAR, TOY STORY spin-off), and 2020 for ONWARD.
TIANA... Hey, remember when Disney announced that a PRINCESS AND THE FROG Disney+ series was being developed? This was announced at their investor day event in December 2020, alongside the MOANA Series Now Movie, IWAJU, ZOOTOPIA+, and BAYMAX!
And now... Well, BAYMAX! came out first, then ZOOTOPIA+. IWAJU is out later this month, that was animated elsewhere, at Cinesite. MOANA The Series is now a feature film coming out this year... Where does this leave TIANA? Will that be reworked into something? Given that Disney is seemingly pulling back on original animated stuff for Disney+ following the burst of the streaming bubble... I'd imagine TIANA either gets cancelled, or turned into... Something.
A feature film sequel? Doubt it, WDAS does not have a functioning 2D unit at the moment for that. It'd have to be made elsewhere, like a Duncan Studio-type place. Though that would be weird, a new WDAS 2D movie *not* made at WDAS. I can't see it being made as a CGI movie, or a stylized PAPERMAN or WISH-esque movie, for consistency sake. Then again... Look at how DreamWorks went ham on the storybook painted look of PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH, in comparison to the hyper-realistic and super-detailed first PUSS IN BOOTS movie + the rest of the SHREKs... Possible... But we'll see. I'd like to see the project go somewhere. More PRINCESS AND THE FROG is what I'd like. We've got the new ride coming, but I'd also like to see other stuff. They were mum on it today, so... Again, I'll keep my eyes on it. I'd be overjoyed if it was reworked into a feature, but, ya know...
Coincidentally that makes two former TV shows that are follow-ups to Disney animated movies directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, who left the studio a while ago and were pursuing a METAL MAN movie at Warner Bros. Pictures Animation. Not sure where that's at now. Anyways, would love to know what happens with this series...

World Farm Animals Day
Created in memory of Gandhi, who advocated respecting all animals, National Farm Animal Day is about the crucial and often mistreated farm creatures.
Farm animals are delightfully cute, especially baby farm animals with their squeaks and squeals, running and playing. Even more than that, farm animals also play an important role in modern society. Take some time to appreciate them this World Farm Animals Day!
History of National World Farm Animals Day
Established in memory of Mahatma Gandhi, who believed in treating all living beings with respect, World Farm Animals Day was founded to highlight the poor conditions suffered by some farm animals, and promote awareness in the hope something may be done to improve the lives of these innocent creatures. The first World Farm Animals Day was celebrated in 1983 as part of an international movement for the rights of farm animals.
Sometimes also called the World Day for Farmed Animals (WDFA), this day aims to raise awareness for and commemorate the 65 billion land animals who are raised for food every year. Since most people believe that animals should not be harmed unnecessarily, this day seeks to bring together those who are passionate about farm animal welfare and working to make changes!
How to Celebrate World Farm Animals Day
Show some love and attention to these often overlooked creatures by celebrating World Farm Animals Day. Get involved with the day in a variety of creative ways, including some of these ideas:
Celebrate World Farm Animals Day with Children
Although World Farm Animals Day has an important, and somewhat sad, origin in the sense that it was created to raise awareness of suffering, it can be celebrated in different ways, particularly with children.
Taking children for a visit to a farm is a great way to teach them about farm animals, and it may also be a good chance to instill in them the message of treating animals with respect. Teachers might want to take an opportunity on World Farm Animals Day to create lessons around the different farm animals, how they contribute and why they are important in the world today. From preschoolers to older children, this day offers a perfect opportunity to grow a generation of responsible humans who treat all creatures well!
Change Some Eating Habits
World Farm Animals Day is actually a great day for a person to make a commitment to try to incorporate fewer animal products in their diet. Perhaps it’s not realistic to immediately become a vegan and cut out all animal products. However, it might be a good time to commit to taking one day a week for the family to prepare meals without meat. Or perhaps this is a good time to make the switch from dairy milk (which many humans really don’t process well anyway!) to drinking plant-based milk such as oat, soy, almond or another alternative.
In addition, taking care about where animal products are sourced from can make a huge difference. For instance, commit to purchasing cage-free eggs, farm raised chickens or responsibly sourced seafood.
Support an Animal Charity
Another great way to celebrate is by donating to an animal protection charity that works to promote the welfare of animals, including those on farms. Take a look at some of these non-profit organizations that are dedicated to animals, and perhaps look into making a financial gift or even volunteering throughout the year:
Farm Sanctuary. This charity offers many ways for folks to get involved, including becoming members of the Friends of Hilda Club, named after the first rescue animal to benefit from Farm Sanctuary.
Faunalytics. Don’t let saying the name be intimidating, because this organization works to collect and share data, research and knowledge that is vital in understanding how to better care for farm animals and limit industrial animal farming.
Human Farming Association. This campaign against factory farming aims to stand up to big business, speaking on behalf of the animals who cannot speak for themselves.
