Crucifix on Margiela book 2021
“Martin Margiela of the 80s and 90s is Jean Louie’s most valued inspiration, held high on a pedestal, on a Biblical level. There was a time he only spoke about Martin Margiela’s genius tendencies, DIY and Tabi Boots. The raw and DIY aesthetics are what lead Castillo to proceed his dreams of becoming a fashion designer. Although Margiela’s garments are made of high quality finishings, Castillo found himself falling deep into void of purposeful imperfections; a world he didn’t realise was allowed in fashion. He found himself loving the ugly and the unconventional - as he should’ve foreseen due to his admiration for Punk music in college, but there was something completely different between Vivienne Westwood’s DIY to Martin Margiela’s DIY.
Castillo lived (lives) for strong aesthetics, one of his peeves in visual creativity are things not aligning or matching in his own desired way, spaces, art, nature, man-made constructions, designs, architecture, words and aesthetics he has no control over. This is the outcome of a person who was raised on Tumblr and Pinterest, or there was something wrong in his childhood that made him need to latch onto a specific style or colour of something. As a child, he was sickeningly possessed by the colour blue; everything had to be blue: the walls, the bed, the clothes, the shoes, accessories, his belongings, and even his food. He even chose Ravenclaw as his Hogwarts House, even though he was an alleged Gryffindor (according to a Buzzfeed Quiz). He grew out of blue in the end.
Unsure of the exact day, Jean Louie found himself collecting things that are black or white. He found symbolism in the shade Black as an act of rebellion against conformity. He was confused why people only wore black at funerals, so he decided everyday is a funeral (for laughs…but seriously, though). He discovered Underground-England and bought 4inch Creepers that he wore to his cousin’s grandmother’s funeral. He felt alive in black.”

— LISBETH’S MET GALA OUTFITS.
inspired by @/whileinvenus!
Announced as the house’s brand ambassador back in 2021, Lisbeth maintained a faithful relationship with Vivienne Westwood which, this year, resulted in an invite to the biggest fashion event in the world: The Met Gala.
Following the theme, In America: An Anthology of Fashion, Lisbeth arrived at the carpet with a custom corseted dress with black gloves. Her heels, although simple, had the classic Vivienne Westwood pearls along her ankle, she also wore a choker of the same material on her neck. On a more subtle note, Lisbeth’s other partnership, Van Cleef & Arpels, marked their presence in the singer’s outfit with the earrings, which are from their Romeo & Juliet high jewelry collection. Her hair was styled half up, half down with a black ribbon behind.
For the after party, Lisbeth wore an outfit straight out of the brand’s archives from their 1994 fall-winter collection, pairing it with small leather gloves, a matching bag and black high-heeled platforms. Her hair was completely down for this look. Lisbeth was praised on twitter for following the theme and, just like the many times she worked with the brand, fans mentioned how well Westwood’s style matches with the singer.

FASHION AND FILM CROSS PATHS IN NANA
Tumblr media
Anime has always been a dominating factor in the fashion industry due to its influence on its audience and cult following. On-screen cinema has inspired an array of people to dress similar or spot on to famous characters such as Serena van der Woodsen and Blair Waldorf from Gossip girl. These outfits and characters also transpire into having a lasting effect in cinema i.e. the Academy Award nominated film The Devil Wears Prada. Because these shows and movies have such a large cult following due to their aesthetic and nostalgic attachments, individuals bond themselves to the cinematic art these on-screen displays portray. NANA is the story of Nana Komatsu and Nana Osaki. They first meet on a train to Tokyo and discover that they are the same age.
Tumblr media
Both Nana’s have different styles. Nana Komatsu (pictured left) goes by Hatchi and Nana Osaki (pictured right). Hatchi and Nana both have different aesthetics, Nana dresses with a punk rock whilst Hatchi dresses in very girly-esq outfits. They both have different aspirations; Hatchi moves to Tokyo to be with her boyfriend Shoji, and Nana moves to become a famous punk singer.
In NANA, Vivienne Westwood is referenced in almost every episode. You can see almost all of the characters wearing something by the designer, even if it is as small as a pair of earrings.
NANA has had a huge impact on fashion, especially through its resurrection on social media apps i.e. TikTok, Pinterest and Instagram. In summer 2020, because of TikTok, Vivienne Westwood’s pearl choker with her crystal orb logo gained massive popularity, being seen on celebrities and influencers alike. The necklace is detailed as a single strand with pearls and a Westwood orb falling in the middle of the necklace. There is also a three strand version of the necklace. Both these necklaces were featured in NANA. Now, because of its resurrection, it is seen as the It-Girl accessory of 2021 thanks to its popularity on TikTok.
NANA has truly inspired a lot of people, knowingly or not, to buy many of the exact pieces featured in the show. Because of its affluence and hype, some of these iconic pieces are reselling on the second hand market for astronomically high price points.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
With the boom of Westwood’s influence on a newer generation, this makes it somewhat harder to get some iconic pieces due to Nana’s popularity. Because of this, it has caused a lot of fakes to be created via Aliexpress, Dhgate, and eBay to be sold on various reselling apps i.e. Grailed, Heroine and Depop. As a result, it sometimes gets harder to identify the real and authentic piece especially if someone is buying into the brand because of NANA and its symbolic influence it has on the buyer or watcher. It takes away from the brand because it’s turning an iconic brand like Westwood into fast fashion because of the mass produced pieces. In no way is this Westwood’s fault because she supplied products that rose in popularity due to anime, social media and seeing people wearing these pieces. However, if Westwood was to lower her prices and start to mass produce her items, it would take away from the brand’s exclusivity and message. An example of this would be House Of Sunny where they rose to fame due to their infamous David Hockney inspired dress. House of Sunny based themselves upon sustainability and spaced out drops however when the dress started to get popular they started to mass produce items. This also affected the quality of their garments and their dress was now being replicated on AliExpress. Westwood’s jewelry is costume jewelry, so they’re not made out of pearls, diamonds or precious metals. It’s up to you if you want to spend £120 on a MINI BAS RELIEF CHOKER via the official Vivienne Westwood site.
Westwood’s influence on fashion has inspired a generation of young creatives. However, her influence on NANA truly changed the way people correlate animated TV shows into real life outfit and lifestyle inspiration.

Ink Detroit Tupac Back From The Dead Wings Jersey Shirt
Top Ink Detroit Tupac Back From The Dead Wings Jersey Shirt
A little background on the Ink Detroit Tupac Back From The Dead Wings Jersey Shirt Additionally,I will love this humble orb and pearl combo Legend has it the original inspiration came from a time when Westwood took a hiatus from her store in London after the final breakup with Malcolm McLaren and she spent some time in Italy. She was working on a royalty theme collection where she imagined what prince now King Charles might wear in his spare time, along with all the insignia of Britain à la the orb and the crown. As well as the royals, she was also inspired by astronomy magazines with photos of the galaxy and the planet Saturn and its ring system. So, to funk it up, Westwood added the satellite ring to the orb. It was sent out into the world in the 1987 fall show and has seen many revivals since then.
Tumblr media
Janelle Monae, Dua Lipa, Irina Shayk Photos Getty Images Why and exactly how does a 40 year old piece of fashion jewelry manage to keep its spirit going for so long? We have the Ink Detroit Tupac Back From The Dead Wings Jersey Shirt Additionally,I will love this supermodel and Gen Z superstar influencer Bella Hadid, Dua Lipa, and company to thank for this comeback. This obsession with the Vivienne Westwood orb pearl necklace started towards the end of 2021 and has been reported heavily in those months. However, with the passing of Westwood in December, the resurgence of all things Westwood related is back and stronger than ever. Whether it’s a new buy, a thrift buy, or an inspired buy, long live the orb, we say! —Dora Fung, contributing editor A few weekends ago, we saw the fashion crowd at the Pyramids for Dior Men’s show. Whilst we all swooned over the boys and their fashion, we also noticed the bling that was sparkling on everyone from jewelry icon Lewis Hamilton to Dior’s designer Kim Jones. Inspired by the necklaces we saw, we noticed that TikTok, the men of Instagram, and Justin Bieber ’s fun pearls validated our findings. Our boy Timothée Chalamet has also been sporting not only some great looks on the red carpet recently, but his jewelry of choice has also been pretty on point.

Slow Fashion and Sustainability
The Academic Journal article by Domingos, Vale, and Faria (2022) titled "Slow Fashion Consumer Behavior: A Literature Review" is an insightful analysis of the slow fashion industry. "Slow Fashion is an approach to producing clothing which takes into consideration all aspects of the supply chain" (Marquis 2021), and is a movement that aims to decrease the negative impacts that fast fashion causes at detriment to the environment and exploited factory workers.
As consumers, we have a lot of power when it comes to shaping the fashion industry, and by adopting more sustainable and ethical choices, we can slowly filter out harmful fast fashion practices. One of the key takeaways from this article was that people who have pre-existing core values of either sustainability, social responsibility, awareness of fast fashion practices, or garment quality are more likely to engage in slow fashion, but we still need brands to promote slow fashion to gain traction from open-minded consumers (Domingos, Vale & Faria 2022).
In a world where fast fashion dominates our shopping habits, it’s more important than ever to stop and think about the impact our choices have on the environment, on workers in the fashion industry, and on our own well-being. I want to share some insights I uncovered from the mentioned text, where the authors explore the benefits of slow fashion, the factors that influence consumer behaviour, and the power we have as individuals to make a difference (Domingos, Vale & Faria 2022). However, it is not just about ethics, as people who are becoming increasingly interested in self-expression, individuality or even exclusivity are drawn to the unique and personalised designs offered by slow fashion brands (Domingos, Vale & Faria 2022). These are engaging statements that slow fashion brands can use to appeal to the conscious consumer, which Domingos, Vale and Faria point out in this text. Some examples of successful slow fashion brands that have used this messaging on their websites includes Vivienne Westwood (UK) and Homie (Australia).
Brand transparency is an emerging aspect in today’s world that is essential in order for consumers to fully trust brands, as we still live in a world where fast fashion exists, and to our detriment (Domingos, Vale & Faria 2022). Brand Transparency is the act of openly sharing information about a company’s values, practices, products, environmental impact, and labour practices with its customers and stakeholders in a clear and honest way. This helps to attain trust and loyalty in all directions and appeals to the conscious buyer.
According to a Finland study in 2009, consumers tend to think about the ethics and environmental impacts of the products or brand throughout the purchase journey, yet at payment, these thoughts tend to decrease. This could be interpreted in a way that shows the buyer has sustainable thinking in the back of their mind, yet they may value different things over this one element. This could include price, fit, convenience or aesthetic. However, according to Domingos, Vale and Faria (2022) & Marquis (2021), consumers are now becoming more willing to pay higher prices to achieve a better quality and more ethically made garment, even if they have to wait longer for the product.
Fashion is considered "one of the most polluting industries at all stages of its life cycle” (Domingos, Vale & Faria 2022). One of the biggest impacts of fast fashion is the implementation of micro-trends, which contributes to a large portion of textile waste, as we are only wearing 20% of our clothes 80% of the time. Until two decades ago, the fashion industry was operating on a two-collection per-year cycle, Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter. Thanks to internet trends and fast fashion, we are seeing 100 micro trends per year, and brands like Shein uploading 2,000 to 10,000 new styles every day in 2021, according to an article by Rajvanshi, Caldwell and Johnson (2023). And physical shopping centre brands like Zara are changing their in-store collections every two weeks.
While it is great that slow fashion brands are doing their part to limit environmental damage and improve the quality of life of workers along the supply chain, it is still important to be vocal as a brand about their slow fashion strategies (Domingos, Vale & Faria 2022). This is an attractive selling point that encourages consumers and the fashion industry to be part of a sustainable change that we desperately need (Chi, Gerard, Yu & Wang 2021), as we currently produce 1.9 million tonnes of textile waste per year according to earth.org. (Corporate Social Responsibility).
Some interesting facts about the fast fashion industry includes:
It takes approximately 2,700L of water to produce just 1 cotton t-shirt (Igini 2022).
The fast fashion industry produces more carbon emissions per minute than what would be produced if you drove a car around the world six times (Oxfam 2019).
Fast fashion produces more global pollution than the aviation and freight shipping industries do combined (Igini 2022).
67% of clothes are made from fossil fuels, with UK fast fashion brand BooHoo having an average of almost 80% of petrol-based fibres across their entire range in 2020 (Nguyen 2021).
What can the fashion-conscious consumer do to help the environment? There are a number of sustainable practices that we can slowly implement on an individual level (Artz 2021) , such as;
Recycle textiles and garments. Consider using services such as H&M textile drop-off bins, Upparel textile collection, etc.
Buy less, put simply. To avoid impulse purchases, try giving yourself some time to think on an item before making a purchase decision. Take a few weeks, months, etc. to reflect on whether you truly want it. If you’re still thinking about it after some time has passed, then it might be worth considering.
Rent clothes for events. There are many online clothing rental pages, sites and accounts (e.g. designerex) that cater to this market need. It is an inexpensive way to wear designer clothing that you only intend to wear once, for special occasions, which eliminates wastage and gives garments a longer life.
Sell clothes online and at markets. That’s that! Try Depop, Facebook Marketplace, or even a physical stall at local markets.
Repurpose clothes! You can do this by giving worn-out garments a new life as a rag, by considering upcycling livelier garments, by reusing and repurpose clothing to transforming them into quilts or other crafts, and more. Just browse #upcycling on Tiktok and you’ll get a range of ideas.
Donate! Please note that many of the clothes in thrift stores do end up in landfills, so consider donating to friends, women’s shelters, homeless shelters, and even animal shelters first, which sometimes use warm clothes as bedding.

FAS3001 Subcultures Research
Following the initial part of today's lecture, we were tasked in small groups to research the Emo subculture.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To begin, we wanted to ensure we were able to define the period in which the Emo subculture was most prominent; we found it “originated in Washington D.C.” and was most popular between “1984-1991” (Masterclass, 2021). A notion we explored quite significantly was the crossover of subcultures and the influence this would have on Emo. The most significant connection we found here was between Punk and Emo, specifically as these were both most prominent around the same time. We explored the punk trends of the time, like the work of Vivienne Westwood (see above image), and discovered the political influences behind both subcultures. To support this, we looked at the political influences at the time, particularly in western culture. In particular, we explored how the stability of far right western governments like Reagan's presidency and Thatcher's government “sparked rebellion” and “backlash” from the left. We believe the increase of workers strikes and the rise of trade unions (Culpin, 2000) mirrors the Emo subculture, particularly in how they could be seen to be rebelling from the social norms and what was ‘acceptable’ at the time. When looking at pop culture influences, we explored how this period saw the start of music videos and the popularity of top of the pops. It became apparent that the accessible viewing platforms of individuality accelerated the popularity of the Emo subculture, and as the novelty of these elements wore off over time, so did the popularity of Emo styles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When looking at the trend cycle, it is important to note how the Emo subculture has been recycled by the mid-2000s, with social influences like the music of Fall Out Boy underpinning the new wave of Emo. However, we also explored how this second wave of emos seemed to be a ‘watered-down’ version of the original wave in the early 90s. Thus, we considered whether or not the Emo subculture is still prevalent or not, and whether or not the Emo style clothing is still available today. Above are images comparing emos from the 90s by comparison to the modern emo style. We concluded that it is still available and a fairly common form of expression, however the line between being Emo or simply ‘edgy’ has significantly blurred. Hence, although Emo seems to be a long lasting subculture, it is clear it has diminished and has moved on from being a subculture into becoming more of a style.
