Virginia Commonwealth: 2022-23 Atlantic 10 Men's Basketball Champions
Tumblr media
NEW YORK (AP) — Jalen DeLoach had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and top-seeded VCU beat second-seeded Dayton 68-56 on Sunday to win the Atlantic 10 Tournament for the first time in eight years.
Ace Baldwin added 16 points and seven assists, sending the Rams (27-7) to the NCAA Tournament with a nine-game winning streak and a title that has often alluded them during an otherwise impressive run of consistency.
VCU had played in the A-10 final six times from 2013-21, winning just once in 2015 when it beat Dayton.
DaRon Holmes II tried to carry the Flyers (22-12) to their first A-10 title since 2003 and first NCAA bid in six years. Holmes had 28 points and 16 rebounds, but didn't get enough help in the second half. The 6-foot-10 sophomore was named the tournament's most outstanding player, averaging 22 points in three games at Barclays Center.
The Rams and Flyers split two regular-season games, decided by a total of three points. The rubber match was more of the same.
The Flyers bolted to a 10-point lead early in the second half, but Baldwin tied it at 47 with a 3 with 11:50 left in the second half and the Rams slowly edged away from there.
VCU converted three straight second-chance opportunities into seven points in the final 3 1/2 minutes, with DeLoach's work on the offensive glass spurring the effort. Brandon Johns muscled in a layup that gave the Rams a 65-56 lead with 1:57 left.
A day after Dayton's Toumani Camara went 12 for 13 from the floor in the semifinals against Fordham, he got into foul trouble and went scoreless in the first half against VCU. He fouled out with six points and six rebounds.
The 6-9 Mustapha Amzil stepped up to pair with Holmes to wear out the Rams inside. The two bigs combined to shoot 10 for 14 from the floor and score 29 points as Dayton took a 36-30 lead at halftime.
BIG PICTURE
The Atlantic 10 is all but certain to be a one-bid league in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005.
Typically one of the strongest mid-major conferences, the A-10 put six teams in the NCAA field in 2014 to cap a run of three years in which it had a total of 15 bids.
Dayton was 28-2 and on its way to being one of the top seeds in the 2020 NCAA Tournament before March Madness was cancelled by the pandemic.
But the conference has slipped over the past couple of seasons, putting only two teams in the NCAAs the last two seasons. And last season the A-10 needed a championship game upset by Richmond over Davidson to get that second team in via its automatic bid.
UP NEXT
Dayton: The Flyers haven't been in the NCAA Tournament since a run of four straight appearances from 2014-17. They'll hope for an NIT bid.
VCU: The Rams are back in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2021 and 10th time since 2011.

Student discovers 3D printable ink that 'everyone was looking for,' says physics professor
Finding a 3D printable ink that conducts electricity, yet is strong, flexible and stretchable, has been a goal of materials scientists around the world since 3D printing began, says Daeha Joung, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the Department of Physics at Virginia Commonwealth University's College of Humanities and Sciences.
So last year, when Andy Shar came into his lab eager to look for the solution, Joung was apprehensive but gave Shar a chance. And he is grateful he did.
"I was trying to find that ink myself," Joung said. "But somehow, Andy discovered the recipe."
The discovery has opened up new opportunities for Shar, now a sophomore majoring in biology in the College of Humanities and Sciences and minoring in religious studies in the School of World Studies. He has been working with Joung and his research team through the VCU Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program.

'It’s up to our generation to … make this impact' — Young people across the U.S. are taking matters into their own hands to hold legislators accountable for actions they say contribute to a worsening climate crisis.
Climate change has been a looming threat for decades, and despite efforts to address the problem, there is still a lot of work to be done. Young people across the country are taking matters into their own hands and fighting to hold legislators accountable.
In February of 2022, 13 Virginia residents, ranging in age from 10 to 19, sued their state in a case called Layla H. v. Commonwealth of Virginia. The residents argue that by providing permits for fossil fuel infrastructure historically and through the present day, the state has violated their constitutional rights and put their health at risk.
On September 16, the case was dismissed by Richmond Circuit Court Judge Clarence N. Jenkins. The plaintiffs plan to appeal the decision. Their attorney is concerned about the precedent the judge's ruling will have on other lawsuits holding government policy accountable.
Claudia Sachs was one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuits. She feels it would be unsafe for her to bring children into the world in the future because they might experience the worst potential effects of the climate crisis. Though many of the plaintiffs in the case are too young to vote, they are finding other ways to help make the world a better, more livable place for future generations.

Submission Spotlight: Blackbird
A lot of literary journals have closed until fall. This gives us months to dust off old stories and see if we can whisk them up into something tasty. When that happens, the online journal Blackbird is a great place to send stuff. #writing #publishing
Okay, so the bad news is that a lot of literary magazines have closed their doors until fall. The good news? You’ve got a few months to pull up that piece you’d given up on, dust it off, and see what you can make of it. If it fluffs up into something pretty tasty, Blackbird might be the literary magazine for you. Since 2001 (or 2002—different places on their website name different founding…

Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) is facing backlash after it allowed university branding to be used on a local beer. This comes after the university had to pay nearly $1 million to the family of a student who died in 2021 after a fraternity hazing incident. Last year, freshman Adam Oakes died due to hazing at a VCU fraternity. In February 2021, Oakes had received a bid to the Delta Chi fraternity and was told to drink a large bottle of whiskey. The freshman was found dead the next morning.

How Much Territory Are the Fallout Player Characters Actually Micromanaging: An Analysis
I did some amateur research to figure out which of the Fallout protagonists (specifically 3, NV, and 4) have a reasonable area of land to constantly traverse. I used Apple Maps to find the straightest possible walking path from a point on either end of the game map, then multiplied the north-south and east-west figures to get an approximate square mileage. Since none of the walking paths were completely straight, these numbers will all be a little higher than actual. BUT the game maps also don’t completely correlate to the real-life locations, so consider these numbers to be estimates.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Commonwealth: Around 600 square miles. This is honestly pretty manageable, especially if you’re teleporting or helicoptering all over the place. It would be exhausting, but you could theoretically get across the map in a day with time to spare for questing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Capital Wasteland: Around 800 square miles. Fairfax is the halfway point; very few locations on the western half of the map actually correspond to anything in real life. The exception is the cavern Little Lamplight is based on, which would make the game map 100 miles long. The map definitely doesn’t extend that far into Virginia.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
New Vegas: Kind of hard to calculate at this scale, but we’re looking at a little under 3000 square miles! Through. the Mojave. Desert. The Courier is really going to have to commit to a course of action before traveling, because they won’t be coming back for about a week.
If you’re a fanfic writer, remember that you don’t owe realism to anyone. BUT, if realism is something you care about for your writing, keep these distances in mind!
(Sequel: distance from game maps to DLCs)
