I’m too lazy to actually post about this so instead here are screenshots of the tiny meltdown I had the other day in @absolutebl​‘s DMs because I thought I had begun hallucinating BL on top of other genres. Still not 100% I wasn’t.

There are 10min left. The one who got the girl wiped ice cream off her face and then had a flashback to smashing ice cream on his friend's face. Is this some kind of Vietnamese bromance or did I accidentally find a BL? What is happening? 

Conclusion: girl broke up with him because she's not an idiot, but sadly the other guy he was definitely in love with had already moved away, the end. So a somewhat bittersweet comedy if that makes sense. There was a laugh track.

So, I finally got around to watching Mr. Cinderella, and... WHAT?!?!

I didn't hate it, but I am so confused.

***SPOILERS******

Both of the villains are in the wrong show. What the fuck was that? Did y'all just casually attempt to commit murder and we're all just supposed to be cool with that??? Like no attempt to bring the law into it at any point? In a show that makes it a point to mention using the law to settle disputes more than once?? I'm??? So confused??? The rest of the show is not that serious and then they turn around and bring us villains from a murder mystery??? It's not the first time I've experienced this kind of tonal whiplash, but holy shit. For some reason, this one is just getting to me.

Also, they kept calling one of the main leads a gangster and I'm like : he hasn't committed any crimes?? He's literally just poor??? And there were lots of other details like this that were just kind of glossed over. They make it a point to show us how important his one friend is, but then he just disappears and doesn't tell his friend anything? And then they just forget about that and act like it didn't happen and doesn't matter?? Why?? I mean the obvious answer is that they tried to juggle like ten different stories and couldn't handle it very well.

There's a sideplot with some actual gangsters that's never resolved; they sprinkled in some amnesia; the trope of meeting your first love when you're a kid and being seperated and reunited; a car crash and a person being hit by a car (seperate incidents); orphans (more than one); an evil 'sister'; two evil exes; a friend who gets used and betrayed; someone's life getting ruined by a toxic and abusive relationship; a possible curse, or at least a percieved curse; a mystery illness for one of the characters-- It's a lot! And none of the characters tell each other anything, so there's a bunch of people running around with no awareness of the fact that there were two attempted murders in this show! Two!

Overall, I enjoyed the leads and their story and dynamic, but all the side shit was wild and left a lot of threads hanging in their actual relationship. If you told me this was a concept trailer or a cut down edit of a five season show, I'd believe you. There was so much going on and so much missing context. I hope these two get to act together again, and I may even rewatch this series someday, but, woof. This was not great.

Even the editing and soundtrack were questionable. As someone who is SE Asian and grew up with exposure to SE Asian and Asian cinema in general, it's not too jarring or out of the ordinary, but I can't call it good. There's a shot that they wasted three different angles and some bad editing on and it did not pay off.

For where Vietnam's film industry stands in its current development, it's not bad and definitely has potential, but it could use some work. Mainly, it just needs to be cleaned up a little. Tell a simple story, shoot it well and calm down with the music and the editing. Some of the most heartfelt moments in cinema are when the music drops out, the camera stays still and you're allowed to just sit with your characters. Use that skill.

If it was up to me, I would've just stuck with the smitten doctor taming the grumpy fighter trope and left the rest out. They had a very cute dynamic when they got to show it off. Also, cutting some of the side stories would've left more room in the buget for costumes and locations. Our main characters could've worn clothes other than PJ's, scrubs, white shirts and black cargo pants. We could've had them go on dates instead of bouncing them between their house and the hospital like ping pong balls (just sayin'.)

Anyways, 6.5/10, the relationship between the leads had a unique dynamic that I found cute and refreshing and I would've liked to see more of it. The rest of the show... Was also there.

Ba Vinh must love lapsitting at much as I do!

Uh. anyway, my on-going love affair with this soap opera of a show continues! I love the thread of Thach trying to get someone who isn't Phuc to delete all his photos of Linh off his phone.

I do kind of wish this show was more aware of the different accessibility things for blind people on phones. Like, there is so much a smart phone can do if you can't see! Thach could be so much more independent!

I mean, sure, that's not the point but it'd be awesome to have more positive representation of the possibilities for people with disabilities even if we know that Thach is going to get his vision fixed in the end (thanks to the trailer).

But anyway I liked the way Phuc was very clear that he saw Thach's blindness differently than Linh or even Thach does. I liked the argument outside, I liked Duy and Phuc teasing Thach, I loved the lapsitting part... this show is just so much fun.

Probably most people already know about this, but I’m still pretty new to BL so I only just learned about this amazing resource:

It lists seemingly every single BL ever! It shows what’s currently playing and when and what platform(s)! It lists upcoming shows and release dates if known! It provides links to each episode! It doesn’t seem to give descriptions, but that’s ok, that’s easy enough to look up elsewhere. I just love having everything in one place.

And the website is so easy to navigate! It’s an old school website.💙 Everything laid out on one page in neatly organized lists. No pop-up ads! No ads at all!! No endless wasted white space that means you have to scroll forever; it’s purpose is providing information in a clear, accessible manner.💙 I hadn’t realized just how much I missed these straightforward, functional websites until I saw this one.

Anyway, enough nostalgia. It’s not gorgeous - the colors aren’t to my taste - but it seems very useful and easy to navigate. It’s great on a computer or tablet, and small but useable on a phone. It seems to be accurate and get updated promptly, as far as I could tell.

I don’t know who manages it, but many thank yous to them, it looks like a huge undertaking.

Mostly I’m sharing because I’m excited to find it, but also in case there are other new watchers who didn’t know about it either.

One of many Korean places that are opening up all across London, but unfortunately this one isn't quite up to scratch. It could be fantastic, but the high prices and a menu that varies enormously in quality, your money is better spend elsewhere. I have been to this place three times, and it seems to get a little more expensive, and a little worse every time.
