Listen, if you haven’t been told before, let me be the first one to tell you:
If you are working in a vet clinic alone, all by yourself, you lock the damn door.
This is especially important if you’re young and female but should apply to everybody.
It does not matter if you’re just about to open and another staff member will be there ‘soon’. It does not matter if you are expecting a client any minute now. It does not matter if it is the middle of the day because the vet is on a house call.
You are sitting, by yourself, in a building full of cash and drugs. You lock the damn door.
You can sit yourself down somewhere that you can see the door and be selective about who you let in, but otherwise you lock the damn door.
You do not want to find yourself in a FNAF situation trying to avoid the person with ill intent who walked in looking for drugs while you were out the back, or hanging up washing. You don’t want to look up after feeding a cat to realise somebody followed you in when they saw only one car in the car park.
Just lock the door.

“I want to be a vet” is a common childhood dream… but I’m curious just how widespread it is!

One of the best things about being a veterinarian is the pure excitement from people when you compliment their animals. Even simple comments like “he has great manners” or “she’s such a personality!” make people’s eyes just light up with joy. I told one owner her dog was cute enough to be a children’s book character and she included that snippet in the family christmas letter. Another owner broke down into tears when I told her it was clear her dog was very well cared for and she was doing a great job with him. I try to always find something truthful and complementary to say about each animal and it’s usually the easiest part of my job.
A lot of things about being a veterinarian really aren’t fun but I always look forward to mentioning these sweet little unique things about each patient to their owner and having a chat about them. I love the way people love their pets.

Being a veterinarian is fun because yes I'm a horse vet primarily, but I have the resources and training to learn how to work on multiple species
Does this mean performing anesthesia on a goldfish for the first time is any less stressful? No, no it does not

I cannot believe I didn't post this one here! Drawn last year, the biggest page of my fish anatomy and histology atlas.
Technically, transverse sections are more useful for looking at symmetry, so you can see if something is bilateral, but sagittal sections are just so cute! I love seeing a whole fish on a slide.

Monoclonal Antibodies
So I listened to a talk from a drug rep the other day who came into the clinic to promote Cytopoint, the anti-allergy injection for dogs.
It’s a great drug, overall. Super useful for many, literally life changing for a few, and now a mainstay of the allergy treatments we offer. But I had to laugh at something the rep said:
“It’s not really a drug. It’s a bio-mimicry molecule! It’s replicating normal molecules that would be found in the body and just providing more of them!”
And I’m sitting here thinking: that is still totally a drug. A drug is any substance which when given to a living organism produces a physiological effect. 10mg of lokivetmab is most definitely a drug.
But if you are going to argue that Cytopoint is not a drug because it mimics a natural molecule found in the body, then by that logic neither are insulin, thyroxine, cortisone or just about every single hormone.
For goodness sake. I have to wonder what planet marketers live on some days.
We also had a bit of a debate because we’re widely told that Cytopoint shouldn’t have any side effects. Partly this is because monoclonal antibodies aren’t well known in veterinary medicine and they haven’t been around that long.
They’re certainly much safer than the equivalent drugs in other classes, but they’re not ‘side effect free’. They’re a protein, so it’s theoretically possible to be allergic to it. Like the Kesimpta I take it seems likely that some dogs will be ‘off colour’ for a day or so. The most common side effect is being quiet the next say, so it is pretty mild for a typical dog and still worth it. But it’s not zero.
Having a headache for a day is much milder than having acute kidney failure, but I wonder if we’ll get more reports in the future of extremely sporadic weird side effects as we gain more experience with this class of medication.
Medical advancements are wonderful and exciting. But don’t let marketers do all the talking!
And remember to report side effects to the manufacturer.

Started this little series with Hunter. He wants to actually earn some money for his first date with Willow, so he goes to work with Camila as a Vet tech/assistant. Its a little inspired by my own job as an tech myself. I just always found it awesome Camila is a vet and that theres so much potential for Hunter in that field, especially with his soft spot for Palismen. Follow me for the next few pages and concept art! Sorry if its a little rough, I had a huge break from drawing the past two years and Ive really been getting back into it. Hope yall enjoy, lots a vet tech jokes coming up in this.

Our apartment was broken into today while we were at work and one of our cats was injured.
We had enough cash from tips to take him to the emergency vet, but we may need help paying for diagnostic and treatment. We're not sure yet what everything will be as we're still at the vet but please consider donating towards vet costs or sharing as rent will pretty much wipe us out completely. Feel free to dm for information or proof

What dog owners are worried the vet will judge them for:
- You forgot to give your dog his heart worm medication this month
- You purchased your dog from a good breeder rather than adopting
- Your dog accidentally got into your weed
What the vet will actually judge you for:
- Naming your dog Bella or Loki

This is your friendly neighborhood veterinary student here to remind you all that TYLENOL (ACETAMINOPHEN) is extremely toxic to cats!
Please do not give your kitties Tylenol, I know you mean well but even a single dose of adult sized Tylenol could be lethal. Keep your furry friends safe ❤️
