Tumblr media
Pdf free download books about liberation war in bangladesh The Liberation War of Bangladesh is a war that was fought from 1971 to 1975 between the Pakistani military regime and the Ananda Bazar Patriotic Front, led by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The war resulted in independence for Bangladesh from Pakistan and has been called one of the bloodiest conflicts in modern world history. The conflict began with an uprising against what many people saw as mistreatment by East Pakistan's ruling military junta, which had imposed martial law on East Pakistan after ousting its elected government in a November 1970 coup.

Causes of the Liberation War in Bangladesh:
There is no one single cause of the Liberation War in Bangladesh. The conflict was a result of many factors, including the repression by the Pakistani military, socioeconomic grievances of the Bengali people, and the divide between the Bengali and Muslim populations of the region. The war also had a significant religious dimension, with historians arguing that the conflict was a result of the conflict between Muslim East Pakistan and the Hindu West Pakistan.

since like one (1) of u asked.
the thing is that typically - historically - romance is written by women. i mean it, even when you go all the way back to the nineteenth century, the modern form of the romance novel was very much being codified by women. 20th century america is considered the peak of the romance novel, and it was practically all women. the historical romance genre is dominated by women. even the early 2000s trend of really weird erotica was mostly women.
this doesn't happen in india. famous romance novelists in india have been men for some reason - you have your chetan bhagat, ravinder singh, durjoy datta - the whole lot, yk? like you might have the occasional preeti shinoy or whatever, but on the whole the really cheap paperbacks are always going to be male writers. and if you ever sit around and wonder "ok but why is romance writing in india mostly men???? that's really weird it doesn't usually happen like that" the answer is the same for practically all of the issues you run into with writing in india. caste.
in this case, the answer is also really fucking bizarre. the reason why romance writing in india is dominated by upper caste men is because typically, women who have access and leisure to english writing publishing are upper caste, and they cannot be allowed to write romance. romance has too many connotations of titillation, cheapness and being available for the lowest common denominator, and you cannot allow the purity of upper caste women to be associated with that sort of thing.
that's really the bottom line of it. at least, that's what my diagnosis of the problem is. there's this really great essay by rachel dwyer on the indian on screen kiss - i think it's in a book edited by francesca orsini - and she comes to a similar sort of conclusion about why kisses cannot be permitted on screen in india. that upper caste actresses wouldn't want lower caste male audiences to see them like that. similarly, no one wants upper caste indian women to write romance that can be read by practically anyone - thats why when you have women in the indian publishing world writing romance, the marketing is really different! compare an anuja chauhan book to a chetan bhagat - she's an upper caste woman, the cover art for her book has those markets. it's typically priced higher, too - an anuja chauhan is going to cost you rs 350 to chetan bhagat's rs 150. there's more female writers in the market now, but i'm usually sus.
its really hard to make lists of good romance writing in india because of all these factors. i have no problems with durjoy datta and all (i think my sister loves his books) but i genuinely find it hard to get into romance written by men. HOWEVER, all of that being said, here's some of the books i've really liked:
1. Keep the Change by Nirupama Subramaniam: ok so like i read this when i was fourteen, so take this recommendation with a pinch of salt. it is painfully upper caste and tam-brahm, but i also remember it being a genuinely really funny book. also, this is a sort of one of the first examples of what is going to become a popular romance form in india - the corporate romance: cosmopolitan, sexy, urban. it's funny and all that, but it's also like a telling example of what's about to come. it's strangely like sex and city, and it is an interesting book in its own right just because of that.
2. Stupid Cupid by Mamang Dai: this is less like a tradition romance book but i,,,, love mamang dai. she's a writer from arunachal pradesh, and some of her other books are just..... *chefs kiss*. this one is lovely because it has two of the things i love: delhi and romance. a woman runs a boarding house where people come and fall in love, and it's just about delhi and it's emotions.
3. Those Pricey Thakur Girls/The House that BJ Built by Anuja Chauhan: i know i spent some time critiquing the politics behind chauhan's writing, but these two books are genuinely so funny, so well written and so cute!! especially the second one, i love that book in particular. chauhan also seems more clued in to the caste politics that back her up, but she's still on thin ice because she loves her rajput heritage. the first book is set during the emergency and has a pride and prejudice vibe, of four unmarried daughters. the second one is modern day and its more unbelievably but way romancey-er for me.
4. Gulab by Annie Zaidi: i was wondering whether i should put this book in or not, because it is less of a romance and more of a ghost story. it is a mental mind fuck, for what its worth, and really lovingly written about a man's first love. genuinely a bit creepy in parts tho, as ghost stories often are.
5. Umera Ahmed's writing: she's pretty central to the Pakistani tv drama, and a lot of her books were adapted for pakistani television. the most famous example of this is probably Zindagi Gulzar Hai, but my favourite would probably be Daam. ahmed's writing was read in translation by me, as my written urdu is really bad. these cannot exactly be classified as romance, but she does deal with love and what it means for women. one thing to be careful of when reading her writing: she is anti ahmaddiya. i won't pretend to know much about pakistani social politics, but i know that that community is very severely discriminated against.
6. Prem Kabootar by Manav Kaul: this book is in hindi, and it's a short story collection. there's an english translation callesd A Night in the Hills, but i cannot vouch for the veracity of the translation. i did love the hindi tho, the titular story is really cute! it is a lot about love and romance in different forms and times while growing up. i even had a chance to watch the play version of that story back in the before times.
Books That Aren't Good, Per Say, But Interesting To Read Category:
7. Once Upon a Curfew by Srishti Chaudhry: ok so like this book is another one set in the emergency but its really bad. its slow paced and the character growth doesnt happen naturally. the romantic hero is quite nice but the lead just doesn't make herself likeable. it's also got some veiled allusions to upper caste delhi university college cultures, and like in a celebratory way?? but on the whole its interesting to read because the emergency only just became an acceptable thing to write about, and it is interesting to see how writers are dealing with it, if you know what i mean??
8. Unmarriageable by Soniah Kamal: ok so this wasn't good, like i feel like it fundamentally misread a lot of what pride and prejudice was about BUT it was interesting because there seems to be a rise of pakistani authors who look at austen. even Austenistaan by Laleen Sukhera is an example of that. i didn't have fun reading this but it's definitely interesting to read. it's nowhere close to my favourite south asian adaptation of austen, but that's a story for another time.
and that's really all i have because thats just how romance genre is in india. i will say this, though: you will find more interesting romantic story telling in hindi writing - even if it is by men. i have a copy of October Junction by Divya Prakash Dubey i was going to get at during the midterm break, and i will report on that in detail whenever i do finish it. in the meanwhile, this is genuinely all i have. on the whole, i really think you can also find far, FAR more interesting ideas of romance in cinema from india. and i don't mean bollywood (although some movies are pretty good!), i mean regional indian cinema!! some marathi movies have such lovely romances, and there's a few malyali ones that are really nice too!! once again though, thats a conversation for another time.

Book Review: Translations of Death and Dream in Ghazals of Safeer Siddiqui
Tumblr media
By Wasim Ahmad Alimi
Khokhli Awaz de jati ha ab dastak Mujhe
Kha Gayi Yun Dheere Dheere Zeest Ki Deemak Mujhe
(The life, like a kind of canker has slowly eroded me in such a way that, even a meaningless call surprisingly knocks me.)
Young, energetic, enthusiastic, and emerging Safeer Siddiqui is a poet of death and dream.  A student of just M.A. Urdu in Jamia Millia Islamia has gained so much mastery and maturity in poetry that his seniors like me think that Safeer is a time traveler who is travelling in past. The elements of death and metaphors of dreams are looming large in his ghazals that have been recently printed as ‘Khawabon ke Marsiye’ [Elegies of Dreams]. This anthology of 72 ghazals beautifies emotions of self-killing in an artistic way that some of his fellow poets has started to call him ‘the ambassador of death’. Interestingly his name, ‘Safeer” also means ‘the ambassador’.
Before we examine his nihilistic and poetic approach, let’s have a look at the significance of solitude, grief, darkness, dreams, and despair in already written literature of the world.
It is as clear as the sunshine that we will die any day. None can deny the fact that our timespan on this planet is not deathless. Then the question arises here, how we deal with the knowledge that we will die. American cultural anthropologist Ernest Becker in his book ‘The Denial of Death’ (1974) discusses this theory in detail. He says that we do not try to recognize our death because this is a terrible thought to live with, we cannot enjoy the life with this thought, hence we do not take it seriously. The book won the Pulitzer Prize of the year 1974. Author, Ernest Becker says in his book:
“It is fateful and ironic how the lie we need in order to live dooms us to a life that is never really ours.” [Becker, 1973: 56].
In the light of above-mentioned theories, this couplet of Safeer Siddiqui gets complete meaningfulness:
Marte Rahte Hein Har Ek Pal Ki Na Mar Jaein Kahin,
Jeene Walon Ka Ajab Ishq Hai Mar Jane Se
(We die every now and then with the fear of death, living people have a wonderful affair with mortality.)
This is exactly what our terrible death demands from us. Death is not a final episode, its indeed a continuous process that develops throughout the life. The legendry Iranian Fictionist and the founder of modern Iranian Short Stories, Sadeq Hedayat explains the same in his world-renowned novel, The Blind Owl:
“Many people start dying just from the age of twenty.”
“My one fear is that tomorrow I may die without having come to know myself.”
“If there was no death, everyone would wish for it.”
These three different excerpts from Sadeq Hedayat’s novel, validate Safeer’s affair with the elements of mortality when he says the followings:
Maut Ki Dhun Pe Tharaktey Hein Haqiqat Ke Qadam
Zindagi Jeetey Hein Bas Khawab Dikhaye Huwe Log
(The life dances with the rhythm of death, alive are only those living in dream.)
Ek Zara Dam Leney Ki Qeemat mein Jaan Deni Padi
Zindagi Ka Tajruba Mera Bada Mehanga Pada
(Had to taste the death just for the sake of ordinary life, the business of living costed a lot to me.)
Look at the components of thought process that Safeer has taken into account in order to create his base of Ghazals. Dancing with the rhythm of death, living in dream, slowly eroded life, getting surprised by meaningless calls, lightness of life and tasting the elixir of death for the sake of low-priced life. Perhaps this maturity of Safeer Sddiqui in an immature literary career has stirred up a great fiction writer, critic, poet, translator, educator, professor, and orator of our time like Khalid Jawed to write 11-page appreciation for this anthology of Safeer Siddiqui. Professor Khalid Jawed pens in his foreword:
“This is to be noted that death or dream or suicide does not come in Safeer’s ghazals in a romanticized form, they come very straightforward just like a fine aspect of standard existence, this is not like scolding restfulness nor the despair or helplessness, this is the insanity that according to Pascal, has been written only in the fate of artists, poets and writers.”
But beautifying death and dream is no new in long and rich tradition of Urdu poetry. The theme has a well-connected chain from Mir, Ghalib to Fani Badayuni, Nasir Kazmi and of course Jaun Elia. All of them have already described death and dream in their own way of creative art. Mir Taqi Mir says:
Ibteda Hi Men Mar Gaye Sab Yaar
Ishq Ki Kon Inteha Laaya
(Every lover died just in the beginning; none reached the climax.)
Ghalib outlines the lifelong process of death in his own style:
thā zindagī meñ marg kā khaTkā lagā huā
uḌne se pesh-tar bhī mirā rañg zard thā
(Entire life was disturbed by fear of death, even before flying my color was cadaverous.)
The Urdu poet ofisolated perspective and most celebrated Shayer of late 20th century, Jaun Elia marks out the fear of death in such a simple way that it also can be the best example of ‘multum in parvo’ (a great deal in a small space) which is the first and foremost saliant feature of Urdu Ghazal:
kitnī dilkash ho tum kitnā dil-jū huuñ maiñ
kyā sitam hai ki ham log mar jāeñge
(How pretty you are! How joyful am I! irony is that we shall die.)
Then what is the relevance of Safeer Siddiqui’s poetry creation? The answer lies within the question itself. His art is taking forward the unique tradition of Urdu Ghazal. After going through the couplets of Mir, Ghalib and Jaun Elia, read this couplet by Safeer, you will find him a true successor of his forerunners:
Dhali Jo Shaam to Sab Apne Apne Ghar ko Chale
So Hum Bhi Maut Ka Darwaza Khat-Khatane Lage
(As evening falls, everybody returns back to home, what do I do, so I started ringing the doorbell of death.)
Note: All poetic and other translations in this review are done by reviewer himself.
The Reviewer, Wasim Ahmad Alimi is a translator and a Junior Research Fellow (JRF) at Jamia Millia Islamia New Delhi.

Valyrian Translator
Tumblr media
So what if you do actually want to learn Dothraki or Valyrian? Of course, the ideal scenario would be to have an actual language exchange with a Dothraki warrior or a nobleman from Essos for Valyrian. High Valyrian is the language of the old Valyrian Freehold which was located on the eastern continent of Essos. Much of Essos was once dominated by the Valyrians for thousands of years, stretching from the Free Cities in the west, to Slaver's Bay in the east. The Valyrians forced the peoples they subjugated to speak in (or at least be able to converse in) their language. After the Doom of.

High Valyrian is a language originating from Valyria and the Valyrian Freehold. Corrupted dialects known as bastard Valyrian are spoken in the Free Cities(1) and Slaver's Bay.(2)

History
Some of the oldest remaining ancient texts were written by Andals, Valyrians, Ghiscari, and Asshai'i.(3) After the Old Empire of Ghis was conquered by the Valyrian Freehold in the Ghiscari wars, the Ghiscari began speaking the High Valyrian of their conquerors.(4)
High Valyrian is no longer widely spoken due to the Doom of Valyria,(5) and most Valyrian records were destroyed in the catastrophe.(6) The tongues of the Free Cities have continued to evolve from the original High Valyrian.(5)
Queen Alysanne Targaryen is said to have begun learning how to read from Valyrian scrolls while still at the breast of her mother, Queen Alyssa Velaryon.(7) Alysanne's husband, King Jaehaerys I Targaryen, was fascinated with the Old Valyrian scrolls in the library of Dragonstone.(8)
How to lead jo owen ebook reader. Racallio Ryndoon is said to have spoken a dozen dialects of Valyrian.(9) Lord Alyn Velaryon studied Valyrian treaties about warship design and sea tactics when he visited the Citadel.(9)Larra Rogare, the wife of Prince Viserys Targaryen, was fluent in High Valyrian and the dialects of Lys, Myr, Tyrosh, and Volantis.(10)
Some highborn children of Westeros are still taught Valyrian as a sign of their noble education.(11)(12) Songs(13) and scrolls(14)(15) are still sung and read in High Valyrian, although by 300 AC most Westerosi nobles cannot understand the language.(13)
High Valyrian
Language
The High Valyrian phrase valar morghulis‎(16) is translated as 'all men must die.'(17) A counterpart phrase, valar dohaeris,(18) is translated as 'all men must serve.'(19)
The word dracarys is translated as meaning 'dragonfire.'(20) Obsidian is called 'dragonglass' in the Common Tongue, but 'frozen fire' in High Valyrian.(21)Valonqar is the word for 'little brother.'(22) High Valyrian is the most likely source language for maegi (pronounced differently from 'Maggy'),(23) which means 'wise'.(24)
The Valyrian writing system, or at least a Valyrian writing system, is described as involving glyphs.(25) It was also probably standard practice to write on scrolls, and not in books.(26) The glyphs can also be inscribed, as on an old Valyrian dragon horn, which, when sounded, had 'every line and letter shimmering with white fire.'(27) Valyrian carvings have been found on obelisks.(28)
Valyrian steel is forged with spells, as well as hammers.(29) Some smiths still know them, although not entirely.(30)
Names
House Targaryen came from Valyria and thus most of its members can be considered to have High Valyrian names. These include:

Houses Baratheon, Celtigar, Qoherys, and Velaryon are of Valyrian descent, and thus these names are possibly Valyrian as well.(34)(35)
Velaryon first names include:

Corlys
Daenaera
Jacaerys
Laena
Laenor
Lucerys
Monterys
Vaemond
Valaena
Jaenara Belaerys was a Valyrian explorer(36) and Aurion was a would-be emperor.(37)
The Valyrians most likely gave Valyrian names to their dragons, as the dragons Balerion, Meraxes, Vhagar, and Syrax were named after Valyrian gods and goddesses.(38)(39) However, not all dragons of House Targaryen had Valyrian names (e.g., Queen Alysanne Targaryen's dragon, Silverwing(31)).
Eight of the nine Free Cities were founded as colonies of the Valyrian Freehold, and are thus likely to bear Valyrian names as well:

Volantis's satellite towns of Selhorys, Valysar, and Volon Therys likely have Valyrian names as well. It is also probable that Elyria, Mantarys, Oros, Tolos, Tyria, and Velos are Valyrian in name, being cities close to Old Valyria.(40)
Bastard Valyrian
Free Cities
Bastard Valyrian includes the languages of the nine Free Cities.(1) Each of the cities has its own dialect, and each dialect likely has its own separate derived vocabulary. Syrio Forel of Braavos speaks the Common Tongue with a lilting accent.(41) One of the Brave Companions is described as having a thick Myrish accent.(42)
The Free Cities use glyphs to write Valyrian.(43) The Valyrian of the Free Cities is described as sounding 'liquid'.(44)
Slaver Cities
Valyrian Translations Season 4
The Old Empire of Ghis was conquered by the Valyrian Freehold five thousand years ago, and the Ghiscari have since spoken High Valyrian. The Slaver's Bay cities of Yunkai, Meereen, and Astapor have their own versions of bastard Valyrian, which have been influenced mainly by Old Ghiscari, the ancient language of Old Ghis. Like the Free Cities, the people of the Slaver Cities use glyphs to write Valyrian.(2)

Astapori Valyrian is described as having a 'characteristic growl,' influenced by Ghiscari.(2) The dialect of Yunkai is close enough to that of Astapor to be mutually intelligible.(45)

Yunkai used to be part of the Old Empire of Ghis, and has multiple languages spoken in the city. Mhysa, Maela, Aelalla, Qathei, and Tato are given as words for 'mother', but which tongue fits which word is unknown (excepting the first, which is Ghiscari).(45)
Some slavers speak a mongrel tongue,(46) a blend of Old Ghiscari and High Valyrian.(47)
Characters familiar with High Valyrian
Valyrian Translation
Gerris Drinkwater speaks a halting approximation of High Valyrian.(12)

Tyrion Lannister learned to read High Valyrian on his maester's knee.(11)

Septa Saranella tells Cersei Lannister the meaning of valonqar.(22)

Quotes
Each of the Free Cities has its own history and character, and each has come to have its own tongue. These are all corruptions of the original, pure form of High Valyrian, dialects that drift further from their origin with each new century since the Doom befell the Freehold.(5)Download counter strike condition zero full.
Behind the Scenes
According to George R. R. Martin,
Tolkien was a philologist, and an Oxford don, and could spend decades laboriously inventing Elvish in all its detail. I, alas, am only a hardworking SF and fantasy novel(sic), and I don't have his gift for languages. That is to say, I have not actually created a Valyrian language. The best I could do was try to sketch in each of the chief tongues of my imaginary world in broad strokes, and give them each their characteristic sounds and spellings.(57)
David J. Peterson further developed High Valyrian for the television adaptation Game of Thrones.

Title: A Place for Us Author: Fatima Farheen Mirza First Published: 2018 Genre: fiction
A Place for Us was a heartfelt and reflective story about an Indian American Muslim family. I was blown away when I found out that this was a debut novel, only because it is so difficult to capture the complexity of human beings’ personalities. Mirza not only explored this complexity with such grace, but also navigated the challenges of the intersections of different cultures, traditions, and politics that impact one’s identity. Another thing I loved was the quiet but firm stance to navigate these cultural nuances without have to stop and explain every bit of it to the reader (e.g., practices in Islam and words in Urdu). Yes, it does create some barriers for those who can’t relate to the characters’ experiences (and this might frustrate some), but I truly admire authors who choose to go this route because it highlights a particular intimacy and how delicate identity can be.
Two particular bits that I loved about this novel was the way language was handled, as well as immigrant family dynamics. As mentioned earlier, Mirza doesn’t always stop to explain the Urdu words she uses, which sometimes leaves readers who don’t know either language in the dark. However, one thing she successfully gets across is this almost sacred aspect to speak one’s mother tongue; how there are some things that can’t be expressed in English because it couldn’t encompass the feeling that is so intertwined with culture. Tangentially, I was so impressed by the way Mirza handled cultural and religious traditions in an immigrant family; how it clashes, establishes complex emotions because of patriarchal structures, among other little details that resulted in truly realistic characters.
The structure of the novel admittedly gave me some whiplash at the start; not only jumping around between three characters’ perspectives (Amar, the son; Hadia, the eldest daughter; and Layla, the mother), but also the time these events were taking place. As I was reading, I couldn’t (and still can’t) work out why Mirza decided to take this route, which I felt slowed down the pace at times. However, it came together towards the end of the novel in such a poignant way, though it was certainly bittersweet.

Through the Darkness (Korean Drama) Urdu Hindi Dubbed – Complete All Episodes – KDramas Hindi
Tumblr media
STORYLINE
Back in the 1990s, the citizens of Seoul were gripped with a paralyzing fear after a series of brutal attacks and murders occurred. A mysterious figure dubbed ‘Red Cap’ was stalking women on the streets then killing his prey, seemingly without provocation. His habit of striking at random made it impossible for the detectives to predict his next move. At the top of their minds is what could be triggering him. Aware of the American F.B.I. and its successful use of criminal profilers to identify serial killers, the head of the Criminal Behavioral Analysis team, Gook Young Soo recruits Song Ha Young, a quiet, reserved, incredibly perceptive former detective for his team. Gook believes using this new psychological method will give the police an edge in capturing ‘Red Cap’ and ending his killing spree. Homicide expert Yoon Tae Goo and her officers question the value of this approach and are resistant to entering such uncharted territory. To quell their scorn they need to convince that this radical crime-fighting approach will increase their arrest rates. Does Song Ha Young have the ability to gain the trust of callous criminals while seeing through them? Is he clever enough to outwit them? But more importantly, does he possess the emotional fortitude to withstand the process?
Through the Darkness Korean Drama
Through the Darkness, a new Korean drama set to debut on SBS on January 14, will focus on the life of a criminal profiler who’s been tasked with tracking down a serial killer. He is an intelligent, calm, charismatic man who has the ability to thoroughly investigate any case that comes his way. To get the story’s feel, you can check out the trailer below! But before you get too excited, you should know a few things about the drama. This show is an interesting take on crime. Most Korean crime dramas tend to focus on brutal acts, while portraying a cat-and-mouse narrative that kept viewers intrigued but left them feeling uneasy. However, Through the Darkness breaks this mold and reveals the mind of the detectives and investigators behind the crimes. It’s an eye-opening look at the inner workings of a police department and the people who work there. The show follows Song Ha-young, a forensics analyst who puts the interests of the victims and their families above his own. He becomes close to Gook Young-soo, the head of the forensics squad. With her help, the latter realizes the importance of criminal psychology and establishes a Criminal Behaviour Analysis Team. The story is based on real crimes, and Ha-Young portrays the emotions and thoughts of the killers in a subtle and subdued way. Although the story is about a serial rapist, it’s still a compelling drama that will keep you interested throughout. Ha-young is a talented young man with an intriguing back story. In the opening episode, he discovers a dead woman in a lake. He feels her emotions, but tries to hide them from others. He also ends up meeting her mother, who visits the ward to visit Ha-young. The ensuing encounter reminds Ha-young of his roots. Despite the fact that the plot of this Korean drama is a bit familiar, it does have a unique twist. The first episode was a fast paced, intense thriller with plenty of tension. Unlike most Korean dramas, the plot is well-paced, and you’ll be immersed in the story while waiting for the next episode. This way, you’ll know what’s going to happen in the next episode. The storyline of Through the Darkness is based on a novel, “agyi.” Actors Kwon Il Yong and Ko Na Moo star in the drama, which is a police procedural focusing on a serial killer. In the drama, the first Korean profiler is named Song Ha Young. Both actors have interesting roles, and the plot will keep you riveted to the screen.

here’s some plot details for the original story i can’t get out of my head.
Alexandra Josephine Madison
broke ass millennial with a degree in religion and mythology
also a witch
pays the bills by investigating ghosts. (It’s usually not ghosts but if a rich elderly woman wants to pay her more because she thinks her cabinet is haunted...it can be ghosts)
ghost roommate. Told her he wanted to crossover when he caught up on all his shows. #Respect
Oh her grandmother tried to destroy the world and now witches are officially banned in America.
All witches have to register by their twelfth birthday and have their powers dimmed.
Her mother couldn’t handle living without her powers and killed herself. Her brother decided to hide Alex
Alex grew up in foster care hiding her witch abilities. She was eventually adopted at 17 by the WASPiest white woman alive who insisted she always introduce herself as Alexandra Josephine Madison.
As her grandmother is famous for trying to destroy the world and her brother convinced the authorities she’s dead, that’s not her real name.
Her powers are undefined. Witches are more powerful when they’re around other magical beings, as magic is banned and she has no teachers or instructors, she just kind of wings it. (the ultimate millennial witch)
most witches have a sort of talent. Like communing with the dead. Visions. Elements. Herbs. She doesn’t have that. She just wants things...and they kind of happen.
She wanted a pet bc baby girl is lonely as fuck and she woke up with the mother of all nose bleeds and a black cat on her bed.
The cat is named Circe but it's not really a cat. Sometimes it’s a dog. Sometimes it’s a snake. A lion. Alex prefers it doesn’t change into a rat.
Her brother communicates with her via a burner phone and random visits. He has a family she can’t meet. She doesn’t know what he does for a living. He doesn’t have his powers. (DOES HE)
She’s a size twelve and has adhd tho growing up in foster care she has no official diagnosis
Midwest baby
Lux and Legend Jones
Twins
Con Alex into coming to their house saying they’re being haunted by their grandmothers ghost
their grandmother is there but like it’s cool. She has a little room in their attic and gives them life advice.
REALLY they wanted Alex there because 200 years ago the plantation owners cursed their blood line stealing their powers from them and the twins want their powers back BAD.
How did they know Alex is a witch? HMMM. They say their grandmothers ghost used to have visions and told them.
They’re in New Orleans Louisiana.
Lux owns the family bookshop which has the oddest and best selection of obscure and modern books you can find anywhere.
Very few costumers but yeah they’ve been in business for 70 years.
Lux is a lesbian and a major bookworm. She has read THE RANGE but catch her in a corner reading a frothy romance novel and she might fight you.
She just wants her own lesbian black Lizzie Bennet moment okay.
Also she’s a badass who is secretly running a ring of black market magical objects which is how the bookshop stays afloat.
Her best supplier? Alex’s brother.
(ALSO SHE AND HER BROTHER HAVE THE BEST LOUISANIA ACCENT AND YES ALEX IS MILDLY IN LOVE WITH BOTH)
Legend is going to Nursing school which is why Lux feels so much pressure to bring more and more money.
He’s on the spectrum.
When he gets his magical powers back his gift will be healing.
I’m thinking also some sort of key to the spirit world.
He’s lowkey trying to date Alex who is HIGHKEY an oblivious aro bish who maybe be dying of loneliness but doesn’t understand what a date is
Sana
Muslim and Pakistani
wheelchair bound
is Legend’s patient in the hospital
they say she tried to kill herself
she says she didn’t. But she won’t say what happens.
Legend brings Alex to see her bc Sana has asked for “the white girl who hangs around the dead”
Sana calls her “cursed blood” in Urdu when she sees her.
Says she didn’t try to kill herself. Her family has a long lineage of prophets.
And she’s been having visions her whole life.
The last six months? She’s been having visions ABOUT THE END OF THE WORLD.
ALSO THERE’S DEMONS.

"In late 2008, Aamer Ahmed Khan of the BBC Urdu website and his colleagues came up with a novel way of covering the Pakistani Taliban's growing influence in Swat. They decided to ask a schoolgirl to blog anonymously about her life there. Their correspondent in Peshawar, Abdul Hai Kakar, had been in touch with a local school teacher, Ziauddin Yousafzai, but could not find any students willing to report, as their families considered it too dangerous. Finally, Yousafzai suggested his own daughter, 11-year-old Malala. At the time, Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan militants led by Maulana Fazlullah were taking over the Swat Valley, banning television, music, girls' education, and women from going shopping. Bodies of beheaded policemen were being displayed in town squares. At first, a girl named Aisha from her father's school agreed to write a diary, but her parents stopped her from doing it because they feared Taliban reprisals. The only alternative was Yousafzai, who was four years younger and in seventh grade at the time. 'We had been covering the violence and politics in Swat in detail but we didn't know much about how ordinary people lived under the Taliban,' said Mirza Waheed, former editor of BBC Urdu. Because they were concerned for Yousafzai's safety, the BBC editors insisted she use a pseudonym. Her blog was published under the byline "Gul Makai" ('cornflower' in Pashto), a name taken from a character in a Pashtun folktale.
On 3 January 2009, her first entry was posted to the BBC Urdu blog. She hand-wrote notes and passed them to a reporter who scanned and e-mailed them. The blog recorded Yousafzai's thoughts during the First Battle of Swat, as military operations took place, fewer girls show up to school, and finally, her school shut down. That day she wrote:
'I had a terrible dream yesterday with military helicopters and the Taliban. I have had such dreams since the launch of the military operation in Swat. My mother made me breakfast and I went off to school. I was afraid going to school because the Taliban had issued an edict banning all girls from attending schools. Only 11 out of 27 pupils attended the class because the number decreased because of the Pakistani Taliban's edict. My three friends have shifted to Peshawar, Lahore and Rawalpindi with their families after this edict.'
In Mingora, the Pakistani Taliban had set an edict that no girls could attend school after 15 January 2009. They had already blown up more than 100 girls' schools. The night before the ban took effect was filled with the noise of artillery fire, waking Yousafzai several times. The following day, she also read for the first time excerpts from her blog that were published in a local newspaper."
