A chaotic travel experience for a United Airlines passenger ended this week after she used an Apple AirTag to help track down her lost luggage.
Valerie Szybala went viral after she shared her experience in a Twitter thread about how she put the tech accessory, which works with iPhone and other Apple devices to track and find belongings, in her suitcase.
Szybala, who was unavailable for an interview Tuesday, said she was then able to track her bag’s location throughout the delivery process.
“I’d just like everyone to know that @united has lost track of my bag and is lying about it," she tweeted Sunday. "My apple AirTag shows that it has been sitting in a residential apartment complex for over a day. Out back by the dumpsters, I have found other emptied United Airlines bags."
Szybala also tweeted screenshots of her conversation with a United representative, who told her to “calm down” when she brought up concerns about her luggage delivery.
The representative stopped responding to her after she inquired about United’s lost bag policy, she said.
After having spent three days scoping out the apartment complex, Szybala was contacted by the courier service in charge of the delivery and reunited with her bag Monday, according to Mashable.
The delivery service, Couriers United LLC, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
In an email statement, a spokesperson said United has "been in touch with this customer to discuss this situation and confirm she has received her luggage," adding, "The service our baggage delivery vendor provided does not meet our standards and we are investigating what happened to lead to this service failure.”
Szybala's travel woes came as many across the country faced flight delays and travel woes. All carriers were affected by a major winter storm that affected most of the U.S. going into the Christmas weekend. Southwest Airlines, which canceled thousands of flights last week and infuriated passengers, said Tuesday it was making “solid progress” on processing refunds.
After her tumultuous journey retrieving her lost luggage, Szybala advised people to take precautionary measures when traveling, including taking pictures of items in suitcases for reimbursement purposes and opting out of third-party delivery for lost bags.
“The 3rd party delivery service is where this got sketchy imho,” she tweeted.
She urged people to use tracking devices like the AirTag in their luggage, which she said was a “lifesaver.”
AirTags have soared in popularity on Amazon amid the recent Southwest Airlines flight cancellations, although the devices have been criticized for allowing unwanted tracking in the past. AirTags were used in tracking lost luggage before, when a woman used hers to track her luggage near an airline subcontractor’s home. The subcontractor, Giovanni De Luca, was arrested after authorities found stolen items in his home.

Time to Go Comment to Codify Traveler's Rights
[I just cut & pasted this from a recent mailing from Scott's Cheap Flights... which is a fabulous resource, if you don't know about them already. But here's a good way to reach out and begin stopping airlines from abusing passengers they way they've been doing more and more lately. Also, it's interesting to see that this is happening. Yay, Buttigieg!]
***
With rampant delays and cancellations, it’s been a tough summer for many travelers. But a new proposal from the Department of Transportation could finally make some headway in bolstering travelers’ rights.
Passengers’ rights today
Under federal law, if an airline cancels or significantly changes your flight, you are entitled to a full cash refund. Period. It does not matter if:
Your ticket is marked as non-refundable (e.g. basic economy)
It’s on a foreign airline flying into/out of a US airport
It’s not the airline’s fault (e.g. a global pandemic or bad weather)
You bought your ticket through a third party (though they may charge you a processing fee)
Your flight is on Spirit
Even if the airline’s cancellation email only mentions a flight voucher (as many do!), the Department of Transportation rule is crystal clear: If there’s a cancellation or significant change and you no longer wish to travel, you’re entitled to your money back.
The problem: how significant is “significant”? This lack of definition not only makes it confusing what your rights are, but it also allows airlines to change their policies on a whim. (Take United Airlines which, in March 2020, quietly changed their policy to claim that any delay less than 25 hours was not significant, and thus not refund-eligible.)
Separately, if you booked a flight in 2021 but didn’t feel safe traveling amidst a new variant, you were usually only eligible for a voucher if the flight still operated. And on some airlines, those vouchers had expiration dates as little as 2 or 3 months down the line.
Both those facts could soon change.
Proposed rule
Earlier this month, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg proposed new regulations that, if enacted, would be the largest boost to traveler protections in years. First, the DOT would finally define “significant.” Under the proposal, a “significant” delay is 3+ hours on a domestic flight or 6+ hours on an international flight. Second, the DOT would require airlines to provide non-expiring vouchers for pandemic-related disruptions. This would include things like closed borders, stay-at-home orders, or even just if you didn’t feel safe to travel because of a serious communicable disease. And if an airline takes a bailout—as US airlines did to the tune of tens of billions of dollars—those passengers would be entitled to refunds rather than non-expiring vouchers.
Make your voice heard
The proposed rule is currently in its required 90-day public comment period, after which the DOT will weigh feedback and finalize what final regulation (if any) to put forth. I guarantee airlines and their lobbyists will be registering their feedback in the hopes of watering down or even defeating this proposal. I’ve left a comment, and I’d encourage you to as well. (You can do so here in under 60 seconds.) ***Here's a link to Scott's comment, so you can use it as a model*** Don’t let the “proposed” nature of the rule fool you; it’s quite likely to become law. It doesn’t need to pass Congress, it just needs to complete the agency rulemaking process. While it will likely take over a year to be finalized, Buttigieg has been an outspoken advocate of travelers’ rights, and I would be surprised if the proposal ultimately fails.
This is not the EU passenger protection law
When I posted about this proposed rule on Twitter, many folks likened it to EC 261, the EU law that mandates up to 600 euros of compensation for delays or cancellations. There’s a big difference. The EU regulation gives you compensation and lets you keep your flight. This proposed rule only gives you a cash refund if you choose not to keep your flight. I’d love to see EC 261-style traveler protections in the US someday, but this isn’t it.
More to come?
Also this month, Buttigieg sent notice to the airlines of possible further action if they don’t voluntarily improve operations. He singled out two things that airlines should currently be expected to provide:
That airlines provide passengers with airport meal vouchers during 3+ hour delays.
That airlines provide passengers with hotel vouchers when flight disruptions strand travelers overnight.
While some airlines currently do this, it’s spotty at best and varies widely airline to airline and day to day.
Though these two are not yet formally proposed regulations, if airlines don’t improve service, that could change.

Skillfully Manage Your Flight Bookings with Delta and United Airlines
Air travel plays a pivotal role in our lives, going beyond simple transportation from one point to another for the majority of travelers. It encompasses a holistic experience that commences with the meticulous booking of flights, selecting preferred seats, and ensuring every detail aligns to create an ideal journey. This significance is heightened when dealing with renowned airlines such as Delta, United, Southwest, Hawaiian Airlines, Alaska Airlines, and JetBlue—each offering unique services and procedures that demand strategic navigation.
This comprehensive guide is focused on Delta and United, the key players in North American air travel, serving thousands of travelers daily across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Our objective is to equip you with a comprehensive understanding of their flight booking, change, and cancellation processes, empowering you to navigate their systems with proficiency.
GRASPING FARE CLASSES AND THEIR ADVANTAGES
Basic Economy: Representing the most budget-friendly fare class, it typically comes with strict restrictions, including no free seat selection, no alterations or cancellations, and limited overhead bin space.
Main Cabin/Economy: Offering more benefits than Basic Economy, this fare class includes seat selection, complimentary snacks, and the opportunity to accrue miles or points for frequent flyer programs.
Premium Economy: Advancing from the Main Cabin, Premium Economy provides additional amenities such as more spacious seating, enhanced meal service, and priority boarding.
First/Business Class: Occupying the highest tier of the fare hierarchy, travelers can expect luxuries like lie-flat seats, gourmet meals, priority boarding, and access to airport lounges.
CHOOSING THE IDEAL FLIGHT AND SEAT
Nonstop or Connecting Flights: Decide between a nonstop flight for a quicker journey or a connecting flight, allowing for a possible layover in a city on your wish list.
Flexible Travel Dates: If feasible, maintain flexibility with travel dates to discover better deals and options in terms of fare, seat availability, and preferred travel times.
Online Seat Maps: Utilize online tools like Delta and United seat maps or SeatGuru to identify optimal seats based on legroom, proximity to exits, or other personal preferences.
Special Requests: For specific seating requirements due to disabilities or other needs, directly contact the airlines or communicate your requirements during the booking process.
SECURING OPTIMAL DEALS AND BOOKING FLIGHTS
Book Early: Airline ticket prices tend to rise as the departure date approaches. Aim to secure your flight at least six to eight weeks in advance for domestic travel and even earlier for international destinations.
Subscribe to Fare Alerts: Enlist in fare alerts from travel websites or airlines like Delta and United to stay informed about the latest deals, discounts, and fare reductions.
Leverage Airline Credit Card Offers: Investigate co-branded credit cards from airlines, offering benefits like discounts, waived baggage fees, and priority boarding for additional savings.
Bundle Your Booking: Consider bundling your flight with hotel accommodations and car rentals for package deals that could ultimately result in cost savings.
NAVIGATING CANCELLATION AND CHANGE POLICIES
24-Hour Cancellation Rule: In compliance with the law, airlines servicing the United States must provide a 24-hour cancellation or change option without penalties, facilitating necessary adjustments to your booking.
Waivers for Major Life Events: Some airlines may waive change fees and penalties for significant life events like deaths, severe illnesses, or natural disasters. Review the airlines' policies and contact their customer service for more information.
Fare Class Restrictions: Lower fare classes, such as Basic Economy, might have stricter cancellation and change policies than premium fare classes. Review these policies before booking or making modifications.
Change or Cancellation Fees: Understand airlines' fee structures for changes or cancellations beyond the 24-hour grace period. Fees may vary based on fare class, destination, or other factors.
UTILIZING FREQUENT FLYER PROGRAMS
Enroll in the Airlines' Loyalty Programs: Sign up for Delta SkyMiles and United MileagePlus to earn miles or points for eligible flights and enjoy exclusive member benefits.
Earn Status Tiers: Through consistent travel with the same airline or alliance, earn elite status, unlocking additional perks like priority boarding, baggage waivers, and access to airport lounges.
Redeem Miles for Travel: Utilize accumulated miles or points to book flights, upgrade your seat, or for other travel-related rewards such as hotel stays or car rentals.

JetBlues Latest Guarantee: Families Fly Together
JetBlue’s Latest Guarantee: Families Fly Together https://ift.tt/jRTUzu4   JetBlue announced a formal family seating plan effective immediately, eliminating the need to purchase seating assignments for children 13 and younger.   New Seating Policy Applies to Families Traveling with Younger Children Prior to the policy, there were no guarantees that adults would be seated next to their children. Although efforts would be made to keep families together on the aircraft, the computer could assign a seat for a child across the aircraft from their family member.   The new policy applies to all fares, including the airline’s Basic Blue fare. Anytime a flyer purchases an itinerary which includes a child 13 or younger, they will be seated with at least one accompanying adult when seats are available. For fares purchased within 24 hours of travel, seats will have to be manually assigned at the airport.   “We know traveling with young children can add challenges, and we want to do everything we can to put parents and families at ease by providing a smooth trip each time they choose JetBlue,” Joanna Geraghty, president and chief operating officer of JetBlue, said in a press release. “This enhanced family seating policy reflects our commitment to continue to meet the needs of our customers and provide exceptional service.”   JetBlue’s move follows other carriers who have prioritized family seating aboard aircraft. United Airlines was the first to formally introduce a family seating policy in February 2023, followed by American Airlines a week later.   JetBlue says the new policy is a new addition to their 16-year-old Customer Bill of Rights, outlining what options flyers have if their flights are delayed, cancelled, and when compensation is due for flights.   Keep up with all things JetBlue on the FlyerTalk Forums. via FlyerTalk – The world's most popular frequent flyer community https://ift.tt/9BcMSkC September 27, 2023 at 03:54PM

Hundreds of Flights Into Britain Canceled After ‘Technical Issue’ With U.K. Air Traffic Control
Britain’s air traffic control agency experienced a system fault that lasted several hours, leading to widespread disruption and delays.
Heathrow, United Kingdom — Airlines were forced to cancel hundreds of flights and delay hundreds more on Monday after Britain’s air traffic control service experienced a “technical issue” that caused widespread disruption on one of the country’s busiest travel days of the year.
More than 200 flights departing from Britain were canceled, according to Cirium, the aviation analytics company, along with 271 that were scheduled to arrive in the country on Monday. Many other flights would be delayed by more than eight hours, “which will inevitably result in a cancellation,” Cirium added.
NATS, Britain’s National Air Traffic Service, said a technical problem had affected its ability to automatically process flight plans, which meant that the information had to be entered manually, slowing down the process.
While British airspace was not closed at any time, NATS restricted the number of flights departing from and landing at airports in order to maintain safety while its engineers tried to fix the problem. At about 3 p.m. local time, NATS said it had resolved the issue, but noted that air traffic remained disrupted. Britain’s government has a 49 percent stake in NATS, which is a public-private partnership.
The delays hit during a particularly heavy travel period, as people returned from summer vacations or extended weekend trips on Monday’s “bank holiday,” or national day off, in Britain.
Thousands of holidaymakers spent hours stuck in departure lounges or on runway tarmac, facing long delays and uncertain departure times.
In Palma de Mallorca, Jon Hughes, 49, boarded a plane bound for the English city of Leeds at about 1 p.m. local time with his two children, ages 13 and 15. Once seated, he said, they were told that the plane had been allotted a departure slot in about seven hours.
“It’s very hot and kids are getting restless,” he said in a message. “We don’t know how long we will be stuck on the plane. Or even if we will get home today.”
Two hours after NATS said it had resolved the technical issue, Mark Harper, the government minister responsible for transport policy, said flights were still affected, and advised travelers to “be aware” of their rights when flights were delayed or canceled.
Heathrow Airport, near London, advised passengers to contact their airline before heading there, and Edinburgh Airport told passengers not to leave home before checking the status of their flight.
Jamie Steele, 39, a British nurse returning to Manchester from a vacation in the Italian city of Pisa, had been set to depart at 10.30 a.m. local time. Four hours later, he was still sitting in the plane on the tarmac. The pilot told passengers that the plane would have a departure slot in the next three hours, but added that he was “not sure he trusts the time given.”
“It’s difficult not knowing the time we will get home,” Mr. Steele said in a message.
Louise Haigh, the lawmaker in charge of transportation policy for the opposition Labour Party, described the disruption as “extremely concerning for passengers” on “one of the busiest days of the year.”
The number of flight departures during the three-day holiday weekend had been scheduled to be 10 percent higher than the same period the year before, according to Cirium, and 83 percent higher than in 2021, when the Covid-19 pandemic drastically reduced air travel.
Alex Macheras, an aviation analyst, said the backlog of flights would cause flight disruptions for several days.
“That’s probably the worst timing ever given it’s the end of August, which is typically one of the busiest weeks of the calendar year,” he said.
Mr. Macheras said that compared with last summer, when there were numerous cancellations and delays, this summer’s air travel in Britain and continental Europe had been “smooth sailing” until Monday.
The disruption is expected to have little effect on overall operations for U.S. airlines, which collectively had just over 140 planned flights to or from Britain on Monday.
European flights were disrupted for hours in December 2014 because of a technical problem at NATS’s air traffic control center in Swanwick, England.
