The Buff-Tip Moth: the resting posture, shape, and color/pattern of the buff-tip moth allows it to mimic a broken birch twig; the moth's buff-colored head and the patches on its hindwings even resemble freshly-snapped wood

It also definitely tends to look like there's a weird little smiley face in the setae surrounding the moth's head, which is arguably even more striking but for some reason none of the sources I dug up on this species seem to mention that weirdness.

This type of camouflage is generally referred to as a "protective resemblance" -- a form of mimesis in which an animal can avoid being preyed upon by mimicking an inedible/unremarkable aspect of its environment. Many different moths are able to disguise themselves in similar ways, and it is especially common within the family known as Lasiocampidae. Some of the other species that engage in protective resemblance include Gastropacha quercifolia, Gastropacha pardale, Gastropacha populifoli, Euthrix potatori, Euthrix laeta, and Calyptra minuticornis (along with the other members of genus Calyptra). Most of these moths disguise themselves as leaves/foliage.

The buff-tip moth is particularly adept at disguising itself, however, and the fact that it so strongly resembles such a specific object (i.e. not just a dead leaf or a vague piece of foliage -- but a broken twig from a silver birch tree, in particular) makes this disguise seem even more impressive/unique.

This species (Phalera bucephala) can be found throughout the British Isles, mainland Europe, and Asia, with its range extending into Eastern Siberia.

Shizune’s underrated

She’s pretty underrated in terms of a medic and fighter

(Doing mini analysis for now it’s easier)

Shizune mostly Tsunade’s assistant and apprentice,she’s no slouch either in the field. Desevers way more credit if you pay more attention to her.

In charge of:

Captain of the Logistical Support and Medical Division of the Allied Shinobi Forces

(I would love to see her younger days she’s around kakashi’s age. Makes me wonder if she ever met her uncle Dan)

Inteligence and medical skills

Shizune is observant and smart. She was able to figure out the secret behind the black receivers embedded in Pain's First Animal Path during an autopsy with her team after just a short amount of time. ch420

Takes the lead in healing Neji in the Sasuke retrevial arc ch 235

during the War, she could find out the DNA-similarities between the White Zetsu Army and the First Hokage, something that she already presumed before.ch545

Shizune battle tactics mainly uses poison and senbon, poison that can debilitate and paralyze someone with a scratch. ch485/488

Even kabuto knew if one inhale he’s done form her posion is no joke. ch166

Shizune did pretty decent against kabuto( Jiraya had no doubt in her skill). Both really aren’t the best when in comes taijutsu (as of this arc) because they fight like medics in mindset of the quickest way to end the fight.

Amphibiuary 2024 Day 19: Underrated

While frogs are certainly not underrated at all, there's definitely a wide gulf between popular species and the ones seen as either bland or 'common' (unfortunately very few frogs are 'common' anymore, even the ones with it in the name!!). The European Common Frog is seen as a bit of boring one, but whenever we get one in the garden it feels like a special gift just for me uwu
