Here’s the plot of the mermaid au!
I’m working on some miscellaneous art so I’m doing a bullet fic to fill the gap!(it almost the end of the school year so I’ll have much more time to work on projects during the summer)
Alright let’s go!
so Virgil is a kid that’s on the run a little bit
He was an orphan and ran off at a young age and has been moving from job to job ever since
He comes across a little seaside town, with maybe 150 ish residents looking for a new job
The only open spot is as the apprentice to the lighthouse keeper (that’s Logan!)
So Virgil gets the job and as a perk of the job he gets to live in the lighthouse
Logan is kinda standoffish but they get along okay
Logan is very admit that he abide by the rules of the job, keep things clean, leave the light on, don’t go near the ocean ect
Lo is specifically really cagey over why he should go near the water and refuses to explain but is VERY admit about this in particular, even when Virgil explains he is a good swimmer
Eventually tho Virgil goes to check out the seaside
He goes on a walk along the coast and comes across a little cove with a bunch of tide pools and makes mental a note to come to this spot again on his break
On one of the days when he goes to sit at the pool after being let out from his lessons over an hour late he comes across something new in the tide pool
(Hint it’s roman splashing around and poking crabs with a stick)
Virgil is literally losing his mind and kinda trips on his own feet and scares the mermaid away
But Roman is actually hiding behind some rocks and watching Virgil from afar
He thinks humans are adorable and is always trying to spot them in the wild so he definitely isn’t gonna pass up a chance to see one up close
Virgil grumbles to himself for a bit until a noise from behind him catches his attention
And there’s the mermaid he just thought he scared off looking very smug sitting on the next rock over
Virgil tries to stay calm and like engage in small talk but he quickly gets that he can’t understand him, tho the mermaid seems to completely understand what Virgil has to say
So Virgil realizes that it’s time for him to head back to the lighthouse for dinner but he offhandedly mentioned he’ll be back here tomorrow too
So the two meet up a lot and start becoming friends kinda! (Insert the mini comic I made here) and through hijinxs learn how to communicate
They get really close and in the mean time Virgil also gets really close with Logan and they have a parent child/ sibling relationship and Virgil has basically been adopted at this point
It’s eventually revealed that logan had a brother (take your pick of a side) that drowned himself very suddenly and that’s why Logan is all alone and so standoffish
Virgil is also keeping his meetups with Roman a secret from Logan
Virgil and Roman also start having a crush on eachother and there are little romantic misunderstandings about their different cultures and it’s all very cute!
One day Virgil is waiting for Roman to swim up but Ro is like 45 minutes late and Virgil decides to head home
On the way back he hears a commotion in the center of town
He finds a big mob and after pushing through the very angry crowd he finds at the center and bleeding and battered Roman being stood over by an enraged Logan (holding a sword to Romans neck)
Once Logan sees Virgil tho he drops his sword and rushes over to him
“Oh thank goodness you’re alright, I couldn’t find you anywhere and then I thought-“
Logan doesn’t finish the thought and just hugs Virgil
Virgil accepts the hug but pushes out of Lo’s arms and rushes over to Romans side
Roman is battered and bruised, covered in cuts and slowly suffocating from being out of the water so long
Logan tries to pull Virgil away from the mermaid but the two get into an argument, culminating in Virgil beginning for Logan to have mercy and for Logan to say that he won’t lose Virgil too
It’s revealed that Logan’s brother was lured to his death by the mermaids in Romans pod and he was scared Virgil met the same fate
Virgil and Logan argue a bit more and eventually Logan yields and calls off the mob if Virgil swears to never interact with a mermaid again
Virgil agrees and carries the passed out mermaid to the water and passes him off to the other mermaids on the coast that were quietly trying to sort out how to rescue Roman
Virgil trys his best to say his goodbyes (but Roman is falling in and out of conciseness so he can’t really reply)
Virgil returns back home and tries his best to move on, he knows Logan was only trying to keep him safe but he’s still upset that he refused to even hear him out
He starts to emotionally recover tho and over the course of about a year he try’s his best to forget all about Roman
Until a strangely familiar kid around his age comes to town….

After that night, things resumed normally between the two- Hilda bringing him coffee, Francis bringing her food. Additionally, she left a generous tip in cash ‘for the chef’ in her words the last time he brought some food over for her. They also had their own outings every now and again; going out for drinks and whatnot.
The outings had made Hilda feel a bit more comfortable with the thought of going out by herself (armed, of course). She’d managed to do so successfully until one day, without a trace, she was just... gone. She was responding to nothing, which was very unlike her- normally she was very, very prompt in returning calls, emails, and messages. Wherever she was, however, she was having far from a good time. Finally, after some time the location of her phone had been traced. The location was somewhat far out- and considering her technical skills, she was pretty crucial to the tech team.
As someone was sent to help her, she was really struggling. All she knew was, she was in familiar, excruciating pain and she could swear that she was feeling the blood running down her legs, mostly. Various measures had been taken so she couldn’t use her legs for some time. Not amputation, surprisingly, but all she knew was that she just wasn’t fit to use her legs for the time being. That, and the literal burning sensation in her chest from having been re-branded. Looking up in the pitch black prison, she felt the slightest bit of hope- whenever she had down time like this she found herself hoping that she’d get to see Francis again.

man the internet really changed things because when I was growing up "empath" meant like a super power in which you know other people's feelings or experienced them yourself. which I mean, technically that was probably based on neurodivergent people with hyperempathy but still, it was seen as a sort of super power like super strength or mind reading or something. maybe it was just my area and the people I talked to. once had a weird homeopath spin me a story about empaths being magical people lol I used to be afraid to use the word because I thought it made me sound haughty and like I thought I was special in the same way white girls with crystals think they are (as discussed on tumblr anyway). weird for it take on like a similar yet totally different meaning.
Oh yeah I've seen that!! Like, a lesser form of telepathy when you know what someone is feeling but don't know the specific words they're saying. It sounds like a horrible superpower honestly. Why would I want to feel just as sad as someone who just went through something horrible? It'd be way harder for me to help them emotionally if I was also doubling down in tears with them, y'know? Regular telepathy is better lmao
Some people do genuinely seem to think they have Magical Empathy Powers, and honestly, while I might find it a little strange or "cringey", if you're not being super ableist with it or thinking you're above other people because you have a lot of empathy, I don't really care if you think you have empathy powers. Like, I literally don't care how much empathy someone has and I do not think someone is special for having a lot of it. You do you, just don't make what you do into a moral crusade, basically.
