Samurai Champloo - What's about? Japanese Mix of Cultures and Lo-fi (Breef Version)
Samurai Champloo (サムライチャンプルー Samurai Chanpurū) is a japanese animated series (anime) from 2004 developed by Manglobe studios. It has 26 episodes and was broadcast in Japan on Fuji TV from May 20, 2004 to its conclusion on March 19, 2005. The production “dream” team consisted of Shinichirō Watanabe as the director, Kazuto Nakazawa as the character designer, and Mahiro Maeda as the mechanical designer.
The anime was critically acclaimed and dubbed in the English language, licensed by “Geneon Entertainment” (then “Pioneer Entertainment”) for releases in North America. This anime is the second work of Watanabe as a director after the successful “Cowboy Bebop” (カウボーイビバップ, Kaubōi Bibappu). Although being totally displaced one by the other because of their own “location and timeline”, both Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo share some straightforward concepts and lectures, such as: “the importance of the trip over the destination”; existential crisis; boredom; solitude, and friendship.
Samurai Champloo is ubicated historical and geographically in the traditional old Japan (Edo period, between the years 1648 and 1685, taking as reference the data that the series gives, like the date of the death of Miyamoto Bennosuke (1645), on the episode “False melody (part 2)", when the destinies of three travelers intertwine because of flipping coin. They become the three protagonists (Mugen, Jhin and Fuu), in the mision to search for a Samurai that “smells like sunflowers”.
The series has its own charisma, developing a wide range of themes and topics. These could be seen in the transitions of the series; graffiti; light commedy and percing lovestories; food competitions; horror zombies; games; and as well a historical and adverturous satire of the "way of the samurai" and the ronin.
The meaning of “Chanpurū” is Okinawan for "something mixed" and also refers to the stir fry dish, considered to be representative of the Okinawan cuisine. It can be seen too as a mixture of: traditional Okinawan, Chinese, mainland Japanese, Southeast Asian and North American culture. The term originates from the Malay or Indonesian word campur (pronounced "cham-poor"), meaning "mix".
Speaking of Watanabe, I've learned he loves to explore while he mix & expand the limits of what we could call “formative clichés” derivated of traditional genres (in a cultural, cinematic and musical level) on his animes. He approaches syncretism and anachronism in Samurai Champloo, at mixing cultural elements of the mentioned suburban and ancient Japan with the 90’s - 2000’s “flow” of Hip-hop culture (USA). He does this in layers. The lo-fi music, the traditional japanese manners, kimono clothes, the meaning of what is "urban", the fight styles, and in the form of speaking and expressing (every character is perfectly well design, physical, emotional and intellectually), we can understand their motivations and experiences in the journey of life.
The soundtrack of the anime series was produced by a team of four composers drawn from the real hip hop musical worldwide scene. They were Shinji "Tsutchie" Tsuchida of Shakkazombie, Fat Jon, Nujabes (with Shing02) and Force of Nature.
Nujabes was a Japanese Producer and DJ. He released three albums in Japan: Metaphorical Music in 2003, Modal Soul 2005, and Spiritual State in 2011. On the decade of the 2010, with the global popularization of the "Lo-Fi" movement mainly on platforms like YouTube or SoundCloud, Nujabes little by little transcended and "now" is recognized as the precursor the genre and one of the vital exponents for its developing, along with J Dilla.
He couldn't not experience in life the "modern 2022" musical and global reach his music got, but at least a part of his recordings are compiled somewhat on the web. Thanks to the community, we can and may listen to Lo-fi and Nujabes while studying, working, and chilling.
Its a flow, it's a state
Reminiscence of this is the nostalgia that Samurai Champloo evoques on us, with its undefined trip, we are living moments much more connected to the present and without external approval to welcome. Every moment lived in the journey, if finally the place that they had to stay, because when paths separates, you got the memories of the things, places and sensations you experienced together.
Fully recommended. Love the anime and the OST.
Hope you love Samurai Champloo, it'ts OST and listen to Nujabes music! RIP.

You ever see Angel's Egg? mysterious movie. and a mysterious, desolate, woeful soundtrack to match. but this song by Tsutchie in 1996, before it was featured in Cowboy Bebop, and before he worked on Samurai Champloo, released this track that seemed to take all of that emotion in stride, and move right on with it. I don't know the sample he used, but it deeply reminds me of that movie.
