I think Tears of the Kingdom may suffer from a lack of danger
There's danger *to you,* but really no one else seems to care much. Once the Regional Phenomenon are handled everyone is just like "OK, back to normal"
Breath of the Wild had a sense of almost omnipresent danger. Any time you saw a Guardian husk you couldn't be sure it was dead, and the damn things were everywhere.
That's part of the environmental storytelling that is so effective is that not only were these things scattered across the map, but you could SEE what damage they did and could do again. Guardians left all of Hyrule scarred and in ruins, the Calamity killed untold amounts of people, the apocalypse HAPPENED.
In TOTK, people are fascinated by the sky islands. They know to avoid the Gloom. But other than that? Some guy in a stable reads about the Demon King returning in a newspaper. He's got no idea what it means. No one really knows what it means, not even Purah. And to top it off, the Demon King isn't an active threat to anybody the entire game. He sits at the bottom of the same hole he fell into in the opening scene, and he just chills there the whole time waiting for you to show up. He sent some old monsters to bother the regions' capitols, and specifically trolled Link with his Phantoms. But that's it. The average Hyruleans just go about their days.
There's even Monster Control Crews, that don't necessarily need you, handling and containing threats.
And remember, most people can't see dragons. The only person we know for sure can is Link. So that big finale battle, no one saw it.
And what does Link know of the Demon King? He knows what Rauru, Zelda's memories, and Kohga tell him. That's it.
I think the most significant thing about this is that it can very easily be argued that Link doesn't particularly give a damn about Ganondorf, just as the rest of Hyrule doesn't really either. By far the bigger motivator for Link, and the primary concern among the people of Hyrule, is finding Zelda. Everyone wants their beloved princess back.
Which is quite the opposite of what Rhoam once tried to shame Zelda into believing Hyrule would think of her.
Even for Link, at the very start, his primary concern wasn't the Demon King who just crippled him. It was diving after Zelda.
Makes me curious what story they're actually hinting at telling.

got dam.............villain viva au
viva gets separated from the pop trolls like in canon, and after a while, she starts to stew on what led her to get stranded from her family. she starts plotting to unite all the trolls as one unit, and establish them as someone that other people don't want to mess with. her focus falls mostly on the bergens, but she's aware of other bigger species that she applies this to as well.
she begins rallying the putt putt trolls with her, promising safety and prosperity. pretty much all the putt putts are all for it, wanting safety with their families and friends without fear of bigger species like bergens.
she learns about the other troll kingdoms, and this only enforces her ideas. she finds an old map showing the golf course and bergentown, and clay helps her estimate about where the troll kingdoms would be in relation. she and a small patrol head out and, after like a week, find the rock troll territories. they quickly meet barb who's plotting her strings heist, and viva makes a deal with her, offering her and her group's assistance in return for shared power, which barb agrees to.
meanwhile, poppy and branch do the whole first movie thing pretty much on script; chef takes her friends, they go save them, creek betrayal, bridget saves them, poppy teaches them how to be happy. it all pretty much runs as expected up until poppy is about to be crowned, when they're interrupted.
rock trolls swarm them, catching everyone off guard, and scoop up all of the pop trolls. poppy, branch, and peppy end up meeting barb, who is very smug. they demand to know what's going on and who she is, and barb basically is like "your savior, obviously. you're welcome." they're confused, and barb tells them she knows the bergens were going to eat them. when poppy tries to correct her, she won't listen, waving her off.
barb then holds up the pop string, saying she took the liberty of grabbing it while they were gone. peppy blanches, but poppy is confused, and barb explains the strings and how pop ruined everything for everyone. branch asks why they would save them, if she seems to hate them so much, and barb shrugs and says she got a special request.
theyre taken to volcano rock city, where they're kinda locked up and watched closely by rock trolls. branch notices quickly that some of the trolls look different, specifically that they look like pop trolls and aren't dressed like rock trolls. poppy doesn't think much of it, saying they have other things to worry about.
it's a little later that there's a commotion. and then someone comes in and spots poppy, getting excited. peppy recognizes her, and asks "viva?" viva is ecstatic to see them, saying she wasn't sure if they'd still be alive. poppy doesn't know who she is and is confused, and viva slowly clarifies that she's her sister. when poppy is shocked by the info, viva sends a look to peppy and asks why he hadn't mentioned her.
she doesn't let him answer, letting poppy and peppy out. when branch is mentioned, she perks up, and lets him out too. she leads them away from the prison and starts explaining that she came looking for them and has big plans, but doesn't really tell them what the plans are. she leads them into a room where clay is, and clay and branch stare at each other for a second before clay absolutely lights up.
clay very excitedly starts looking branch over, talking about how much he'd grown and how he'd missed him. poppy, confused, asks branch who this is, and viva and clay put together that he's branch's brother. poppy gets excited and asks why he never mentioned a brother, and then puts together that it's clay from brozone and gets even more excited. branch literally tells her to slow down because she's about to pass out from all the revelations.
branch then asks why viva and clay seem to be on barb's side, and viva explains that it'll be explained in due time, but she promises they're going to be safe no matter what. viva then explains she intends to keep all trolls safe, so that stuff like trollstice won't ever happen again. she urges poppy and branch and peppy to trust her, and poppy and peppy agree. branch is a little hesitant, but agrees as well after looking at clay for a moment.
all the while, barb is running around gathering the strings and the other trolls. as they're brought to volcano rock city, poppy is meeting the other leaders, who mostly aren't that thrilled to see her. she assures that everyone is safe, though it doesn't really assure them. branch is still skeptical that viva is going to help them, and voices his concerns a couple of times, but poppy is insistent.
eventually, all of the trolls are gathered, and barb starts her show. she reveals the leaders and her guitar, and is about to begin transforming them when viva appears behind her, telling her she's done enough.
viva takes the guitar, changing the rock strings into pop. barb demands to know what she's doing, saying this wasn't part of the deal, but viva counters that she never agreed to make everyone rock. barb tries to take her guitar back, and viva uses the power chord on her, making her a pop zombie. everyone else is alarmed, and viva takes over, explaining her intention to unite them to protect them. she basically says to join her or she'll transform them too. some trolls try to refuse, but get changed. everyone else nervously agrees.
viva takes the trolls to pop's village, as it's in the middle of the territories. she starts making the village larger to handle the increase in trolls, while also working to make sure she has all of the trolls where she can protect them. poppy is pretty sure she only has good intentions, but branch dislikes how things are going and is trying to insist that this isn't right.
viva eventually starts working on gathering up trolls outside of the troll kingdoms, set on protecting them too. some of her trolls manage to find and catch john dory in the neverglades, which neither branch nor clay are super thrilled about. jd is excited to see them, though, and is eager to catch up. when branch expresses his dislike of viva's plan, jd agrees with him, stating that protecting everyone was overkill and she wasn't going about it in the right way.
john's post card leads them to finding bruce, but bruce is managing to avoid getting brought back. eventually, clay himself goes to get him, and bruce is excited to see him at first. but then he notices the star on his arm, recognizing it immediately. he asks clay not to do this, and clay shrugs and apologizes but still takes him back, away from his family.
viva figures out somehow that floyd is at mount rageous, and when her trolls go to get him, discover he's trapped in the diamond bottle already. they manage to get him out of there regardless and bring him back, where he reunites with his brothers. viva talks to him alone, explaining her intention to protect trolls from stuff like what he'd gone through, and offers to free him if he helps her. after a little convincing, he agrees.
she gets his brothers to free him with the perfect family harmony, and floyd joins clay in helping viva, much to their other brothers' dismay.
all the while, branch and also poppy are slowly gathering up a rebel group against viva, meeting in branch's bunker since viva doesn't know its there. trolls like bruce and john dory, the snackpack, riff, prince d, and a variety of others are a part of it, all trying to come up with a way to stop viva. poppy is adamant about viva having good intentions, which some of the rebels agree with.
the group debates what viva's goal is; poppy is pretty sure it isn't a grab for power, which branch agrees with. theyre pretty sure she is genuinely trying to protect them from harm and is just going about it weirdly. poppy points out that she had barb "save" them from the bergens despite the bergens being their friends now, and it could be simple enough to just tell her things are different than she thinks. branch hesitates, unsure if talking will get them anywhere, but agrees to try.
a small group approach viva; poppy and branch go to talk with her, with a few others as backup in case things get weird. poppy explains that she knows viva just wants to keep everyone safe, but things have changed, that the bergens don't eat them anymore. viva doesn't believe her, calling it a dumb joke. the more poppy tries to reason with her, the more tense and angry viva gets- viva snaps that she's protecting her, and poppy says she doesn't need protecting.
it sort of spirals into an argument where viva feels cornered, telling poppy to stop and leave her alone. branch and the other rebels join in to try and reason with her, which only makes it worse. poppy sees this and tries to reach out, to offer comfort, but viva lashes back completely on instinct, knocking poppy away.
everything stops then as viva realizes she'd just hurt her sister, and poppy is a little stunned but clearly doesn't blame her. viva, overwhelmed, kicks them out and tells them not to bother her or she'll change them with the power chord. poppy doesn't want to leave her alone, but branch pulls her out of there.
with their plan having gone completely sideways, branch states talking it out isn't going to work, and poppy is too subdued and upset to argue. they start trying to figure out how to physically stop her, and riff points out the guitar, saying if they can get it away from her, that stops a significant threat as she can't change them anymore.
they plot to steal the guitar, certain that if they take it viva will slow down enough for them to reason with her. poppy insists on helping because she wants to help viva.
viva has plans for a presentation or concert or something, because she's gathered all the trolls she can reach, in order to rally them against people like the bergens. the rebels sneak around and manage to interrupt viva's thing, poppy getting hold of the guitar. viva again insists she's protecting them, and poppy insists they don't need protecting. viva basically pleads with her, stating she won't lose anyone again, that she can't lose anyone again. poppy says she won't, that things have changed and it's better now, but viva hasn't even looked to see it. she points out that she's done damage, having forced the trolls into essentially one genre and tore some away from their families, like bruce. viva says she isn't listening, none of them are, its for the better, it has to be for the better, because their music is what keeps putting them in danger with other species.
before poppy can react, viva grabs the guitar from her again. and then, she smashes it, destroying the strings and music along with it.
as everything falls silent, viva stands straight and says basically, "there. now no one has a reason to hurt us anymore."
everyone kinda just stops, those changed into pop zombies slowly understanding what happened. it's a lot like the end of world tour, where they start making music anyways.
poppy tells viva that life has risks, and that there are bad people, but it isn't worth changing who you are. being yourself brings joy to both yourself and others. their music isn't something she can take away and she shouldn't do so anyways. viva's a little freaked out, pointing out bergens ate them for their happiness, and people like velvet and veneer used them for talent like they had with floyd, and she just doesn't want that to happen to anyone else. poppy says that's why they have each other, to protect one another as they go around being themselves.
i don't know how to word the last message and i don't know how to wrap it all up nicely but YEAH!

@lovepeacestar
I imagine there is lot of confusion at first- and shock, definitelly the shock
The thing is- and what I headcanon- Troll hair is sacred; and while only Pop Trolls seem to be able to use it essentially as an extension of themselves, I imagine for all of the trolls, it is still very sensitive and point of pride
Which would make Barb reaching into Poppy's hair a rather violating move- for a Pop Troll especially, as their hair sensitivity is probably highest of then Troll kind
(Ngl, that would make for a good ficlet/oneshot, I could explore this further XD)
So even if Branch is clearly sporting musical Strings in his hair- it is still his hair, and reaching into it and plucking them is a major taboo
Honestly, I think few trolls would be stunned in that 'oh why didnt I realize sooner', that those are Strings in Branch's hair- definitelly Delta Dawn, who Branch met very early and developed frienship with (Along with Barb and to an extent Trollex)
Poppy, whose knowledge about the Strings would be the most recent.... Honestly, I think she would have been the only one who would suspect there is something more to them, but her fear of pushing Branch away would stall any questions she would have
The big point of if all however though- Branch wouldn't allow the strings to be used as a crutch for the music anymore Arguing he was able to find music inside himself even without the strings' help
In fact, it was his singing, him enjoying and making music, that led to the Strings' creation And he would encourage the Trolls to try and do the same, much like they had in the movie
Trolls would of course be curious about the seventh String, but honestly, with all that happened at the moment, it would probably take a while for someone to actually try and draw attention to it XD
-------------
As for Branch's brothers, hmmmm Honestly, from the movies, it seemed to be that the Pop String's existence- and the existence of other Trolls- turned to be a carefully guarded Royal Secret, that went on for generations
Probably in effort for the Pop Royals to erase the crime they almost commited and to pain themselves all squeaky clean
Now, bit of musing, but
There has been a screenshot of an updated map from some sort of converence (avialable of Troll Wiki), what poses few questions
Tumblr media
From this map, we can see that Bergen Town itself is rather far away from The Troll Kingdom Territories- the current ones at least; yet it was implied (and widely accepted) that the Troll Tree used to be the Capitol of Trolls in general, not just Pop Trolls
I know the movies have more plot holes than a doily lol, but given the turbulent history of Strings, it would have made sense for the other Tribes to run away as far as the could from Pop
And yet, Peppy was in possession of a Map that showed all current Kingdoms- and was still outdated, given Branch's comment about Disco
This is bit chaotic once more but bear with me XD I know most fans accept that Brozone broke out when they were already locked up in the tree, but I am pretty sure the creators stated that the break up happened before Bergen Town even locked up the Pop Trolls
Given the position of the abandoned golf course- abandoned, being the key words- we can assume the Bergens by themselves were rather migratory, and left the land where the golf course is situated because of some reasons
As it is, the Pop Troll territory must have been huge- easily spanning the woods around Bergen town, including what used to be before Bergen town, and reaching far north to cover what is known as Pop Troll Territory now That would make the Pop Troll populace- back then at least- massive compared to other Tribes- certainly enough that the little territory they have now has not been contested since the Separation of Strings
And yet the map that Poppy is using only includes the current Kingdoms, as outdated as it apparently is Meaning the creator of the map made it with the assumption that the Pop Territory won't be any larger than that- Or it was just one map of many, and the only one worth keeping, when the Bergens started decimating their numbers to the point that they could no longer hold any larger territory than that
Anyway, I got derailed XD
But, as I wanted to say, I don't think the previous Pop Royals were the nicest of Trolls, and seemed to definitelly made it their goal to erase every dirty little secret, keeping the existence of the Pop String to themselves
If the knowledge of either other genres or the String was not forbidden, they would have been stories passed down from parents to a child- and yet the current Pop Trolls are completely ignorant, and probably has been for a looooong time, even before Bergens found them delicious to snack on
That means at the time of the band breaking, none of Branch's brother even had idea that the Strings existed- and at the end of world tour, probably only Floyd- who is present- would have any idea to their Significance
JD perhaps has any idea other genres exists, but Bruce and Clay doesn't seem to be aware of either, as according to the map, they woudn't even have a chance of meeting other Trolls, unless they were some minor genre tribe
As it is, Branch probably now feels very selfconscious about the Strings, and isn't really keen on drawing attention to them After all, it does paint a very obvious target on his back, as not all Trolls posses the morals to not try and pluck the String to themselves
(Chaz certainly seem to be the type)

Check it out, guys! I have a new game in my Xbox One that serves as my extra special Christmas present; Trolls Remix Rescue!!! 🤩💖💙🎶🎵🎶
Tumblr media
Here in this game, you can play as our beloved favorite Trolls that includes Poppy, Branch, Guy Diamond, Viva, John Dory, Floyd and your own Trollsonas as you explore every area of the Troll Kingdom as long as you like! 😁
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is also an option to customize your Trollsonas to make them look like your own fanmade OCs and includes fun rhythm minigames such as hitting arrows while the Troll you are playing as dances and competing against Queen Barb in a guitar brawl. (Sorry if I couldn’t show what the former looks like because it requires letting go of my camera as I played that... 😓)
Tumblr media
According to this map, it seems like there are only four areas of the kingdom that can be accessible to explore such as Pop Village, Volcano Rock City, Symphonyville and Vibe City, but they’ve excluded Techno Reef and Lonesome Flats in here! 😢
Tumblr media
In case you were wondering who I’m playing as in the pics about the game that I took, I’m playing as my sweet lovable Branch because it allows me to play the Troll that I loved most! 😍💙
What do you think about this new Trolls video game? This one is definitely my new dream life and I love it so much that I had to play it for the next 24 hours! It looks so fun to play, and why don’t you have it yourself if you find this interesting? 🥰😍💖💙
Furthermore, I think I needed a strategy guide on how to earn all of the sticker achievements in this game because there is no YouTube video explaining on how to get them. 🤔
For more information of this game, check out this website. 😊

The Beginning (Harmonic Heroes AU)
Tumblr media
A long time ago, a group of five brothers performed in a famous boyband that was named BroZone. The Pop Trolls in the Pop Kingdom loved listening to them and going to their concerts.
They, as well as trolls beyond the Pop Kingdom, also knew that this wasn't the only occupation that they held. As far as public knowledge goes, the four oldest brothers and their grandmother have been chosen by the powerful Soul Gems to wield powers according to their Light and Voice: Truth, Passion, Prosperity, Resolution and Freedom. They train to get stronger to prepare for when their world needs them.
One day about 20 years ago, their parents, who have not only been missing for a long time but also behaving strangely, suddenly came back and declared war on the Kingdoms of Pop, Rock, Techno, Country, and Funk. And they brought an army of monsters with them.
The five kingdoms fought valiantly, though not without receiving varying amounts of damage, with the Funk Kingdom being supposedly wiped off the map and the Rock Kingdom displaced.
The final battle had taken place on top of the Pop Castle, which was near the Troll Tree.
The Harmonic Heroes knew that the only way for the war to end was for them to take their parents out themselves. So, putting on their band vests, the grandmother took the four oldest boys to face off against their parents. The only explanation that they gave to the four year old brother before leaving was that they needed to take care of their parents and that they would be right back.
As the Pop Trolls began to evacuate from the chaos from that battle, before the young Bitty B evacuated himself, he suddenly experienced the painful equivalent of a hand squeezing his heart, causing him to scream and laid in the fetal position. After recovering enough to walk, he grabbed the leafy vest of the second-youngest brother and evacuated onto the airships. But he still waited for his family to come find him.
In the aftermath of the battle, none of the bodies were ever found, leading to everyone, including the four year old, to conclude that they somehow perished.
Meanwhile, it seemed that someone made their way back to an abandoned pod, starting their search for answers as to what happened to their parents...

I haven't completed any new art concepts for the Techno!Branch AU yet, but I got some notes on how Branch ended up with the Pop Trolls.
So as I've mentioned before, his egg is somehow found on the Troll Tree, even though there was no river or any water source for it to be washed up on.
Tumblr media
And according to this map, the nearest water source to Bergen Town is on the west, and the Techno Reef is on the north or northeast. So here's what I've come up with;
When Branch was still an egg, there was a massive storm on Techno Reef that caused the waves to go out of control. I'd wager it spread onto the other kingdoms nearby like Volcano Rock City, but it's not enough of a concern for them as it is for the Techno Trolls.
The currents underwater was going wild, and amidst the chaos, Branch's egg was somehow swept away. Whoever's in charge at the time probably wouldn't notice an egg going astray, too focused on getting the rest of the Trolls to safety from the storm.
Soon the egg was washed ashore on a random beach north to Bergen Town. How did it end up there?
I don't know, maybe it went through an adventure Disney's Dinosaurs style if any of y'all watched the movie (something like this : https://youtu.be/xeMV6gQto_s?si=kteSk28Q9lsG6ElS)
youtube
It's a kids series, anything can happen.
Anyway, the egg then ended up carried into Bergen Town, either by an unsuspecting Bergen just messing with a little ball thing he found on the edge of town and decide to throw it into the Troll Tree, or we can do a Cooper and have some bird drop it into the Tree.
Either way his egg ended up on the Tree regardless, nestled neatly on the base of the Tree, no crack in sight.
How that happened, I don't know, maybe Techno Troll eggs are resilient to attacks lol
The egg was then found by either John Dory or Grandma Rosiepuff (I'm betting on JD, though) and was brought back to their home 'cause maybe they thought it was a random Pop Troll egg that got lost and they didn't pay close attention to it.
It was only when the egg is in the house that they realized that this isn't a normal Troll egg.
Now I don't know for sure what Techno Troll eggs look like. The ones we've see onscreen are one for the Glitter Trolls (who are a part of Pop, so we can assume most Pop Troll eggs look like the ones shown), the Country Trolls, and the Funk Trolls. Best official reference I could find of the eggs is from this image; the one on the far left is, presumably, the Techno egg through its design alone.
Tumblr media
If I didn't know any better, this is probably the official design for the Troll eggs. My initial headcanon is that Techno Troll eggs are more spherical in shape and has the same consistency of a goldfish egg.
But for the sake of simplicity, let's say the image above is the official egg design and leave it at that; the only thing important to note is that the eggs look different for each tribe.
Anyway, the bros realized the egg isn't normal, and it wasn't long until it started to shake, to their dawning horror.
The final eggshell fell off, and out came baby Branch in all his Techno glory.
And that's that! I'll be making more notes and headcanons in the future, but for now this is what I got so far.

In Other Lands Map
I recently did a reread of In Other Lands by @sarahreesbrennan and got really inspired so I decided to attempt to draw up a map based on the book! I tried to take as much as I could from the book and include it in the map, but it doesn’t clarify a lot about how things are located in relation to each other so I had to make up my own interpretation. With that said, this is how I envision The Border Land and The Other Land in the book and I’m pretty happy with how it came out!
Tumblr media
For a closer look at some places where events from the book happen, keep reading!
Tumblr media
The Wall/Border and the Human World (Aka any random field in Devon, England.
Tumblr media
The Border Camp where most of the book takes place and the surrounding areas, including the infamous lake, the nearby farming community and The Elvern Tavern.
Tumblr media
The Sunborn Tower, home of Luke Sunborn and his family!
Tumblr media
The Forest of the Suicides, where the harpies reside, and the nearby Troll caves.
Tumblr media
The Aegle Woods, where dryads live and also where Elliot went (sneaked) on his first campaign.
Tumblr media
The village and lake where Elliot first met mermaids(!!!).
Tumblr media
The area from the new short story, including the two fortresses and the Dwarven Kingdom of the Diamond Clan!

I could totally see the gang doing a version of this. Except since they live in a kingdom they do all the cities in Corona. Eugene of course is the one to find out about it and make the gang play it. Lance gets more than the actual number to troll Eugene; he adds stuff like North Corona, South Corona, Wallburg. Varian also trolls by instead naming all the chemical compounds he knows. Rapunzel threw a hissy fit because “Nobody cares about San Theodora!”. And once Cassandra finds out about the game, her inner smug cartographer kicks in. They’re all educated well traveled adults, and Dwayne. How could they not know all the cities in their own kingdom? She especially should know them, she mapped out all of Corona! This game is gonna be so easy!!
But then just like Ross there’s a couple she gets hung up on that she just can’t seem to remember. How can she not remember?! She mapped out the entire kingdom!! Eugene didn’t intend for the game to drive Cass this crazy but he’s having a blast. Until Cass insists that no dinner for herself until she names all the cities in Corona!!
Varian’s lowkey worried for her. He asks if she’s okay and she just starts sniffling and he wraps her sadness blanket around her.
And finally she realizes her last one was this tinny little fortress on the southwestern estuary and just about has a hernia over it.

Royalty AU: Houses and Kingdoms (and others)
(It’s Royalty AU timeee-)
House of Fowls:
-Ruling Body:
The Fowl Family, consisting of King Artemis Fowl the First, Queen Angeline Starinov, and three princes: Artemis (the Second), Myles, and Beckett.
King Artemis is a quiet, somewhat brooding individual, though he carries a distinct air of regality in his gait and cadence, commanding respect immediately upon entering the room. In politics, he is cautious and meticulous, and not afraid of underhanded dealings to secure the safety of his family and kingdom, though he has come a long way in pulling the family out from the feared shadow of his forefathers. When at home, much of his time is spent looking after his family- it is not uncommon to see his youngest sons scampering around the Fowl Palace’s winding halls, with Artemis and Angeline not far behind.
The Fowls are noted as a strange family, with their bloodline associated with magic- though the magic of The People has been forbidden in the Fowls’ kingdom (and most others) for years now, residual magic in their lands has gifted them odd abilities, the most honed of which being the ability to turn certain materials to gold- a ‘Fowl’s Touch’.
Head of Command:
Domovoi Butler, head of the Fowl army and personal protector of the Fowl Family. He has recently fallen into this role after the loss of his uncle, The Major, to the House of The North’s attack on the Fowl Family.
Originally tasked with the personal protection of Artemis the Second alone (a child prone to seeking out danger), this new role is more than he anticipated taking on so soon, and he isn’t sure if he feels suited to it yet.
Despite his doubts, Butler is a legendary fighter with almost any weaponry, and the only known man to single-handedly face a troll, survive, and win. Many tales exist of his exploits, though he does his best to shut them down when they are discussed in his presence.
Kingdom:
The Fowl’s kingdom is primarily moorland, with a broad stretch of rocky coastline bordering the easternmost border, mountains to the north and broad, impenetrable forests to the west, where The People are rumored to live. The Fowls do not enter these woods, as a general rule (Artemis the Second has hopes to one day map them, fairy folk or not)- they are a superstitious kingdom. To the south, the moorlands eventually rise into sparse pockets of deciduous forest- the southernmost border is marked by a large river, which they use to ship goods to the coast (or to kingdoms further west).
The Fowl family has a tumultuous history with its people, and Artemis the First is doing what he can to make up for the harsh rule of his own parents- generally, he is looked upon more favorably, though still regarded as a somewhat ‘suspicious’ ruler. His close relationship with his family have gone a long way in softening this public perception.
Within the Fowl kingdom, a heavy emphasis is placed on knowledge, with many famous libraries and records being housed within their borders. They are not particularly militaristic and do not have a common religion- superstition surrounding The People is deeply ingrained in their society, however (ex: most individuals wear iron somewhere on their person, whether they believe in the fairy folk or not).
Notes:
- Their house symbols are owls (royal family), falcons (army), and a rooster (populace). Falconry is a common sport within the kingdom, and the Fowls have their own birds for sending messages to other kingdoms (and as pets, in the case of the princes).
- Crowns and royal jewelry consists of iron (day-to-day), with gold being reserved for ceremonial circumstances.
- Artemis the First fights with a pike.
(The Butlers):
The Butlers are a family closely intertwined with the royal family of The Fowls, having historically served as their personal protection in the form of knights, army generals, and bodyguards. It is unknown when this history began, or under which circumstances, but it was established long before any current parties can remember.
Butlers are traditionally raised under the assumption of eventual knighthood, being sent to study under the Blue Diamond order of knights at a young age (the exact year varies). Up through adolescence and into young adulthood, these Butlers are trained in various forms of combat, espionage, and matters of warfare, as well as wilderness survival- they are then sent across the kingdoms to complete various missions at the hire of powerful individuals in order to hone these skills. At such a time as the Fowls need them, they are called back to serve the royal family.
Butlers are feared and respected across many of the kingdoms, as they have been responsible for many historical feats. That being said, their family is also often the subject of much scrutiny, as they are intrinsically linked to the Fowls even when serving under a different banner- many inherently see their presence as that of a spy or potential turncoat. It has not been uncommon for Butlers to disappear in distant kingdoms (further from the Fowls’ influence), ‘dealt with’ for fear of Fowl interference within foreign borders.
House of The North:
Ruling Body:
King Britva, and he alone- he used to be part of a ruling family. Used to- the rest of his kinsfolk were all exterminated, rumored to be at his own hand. It is unknown what would have caused him to do such a thing, as no clear tensions were evident among he and his kin, but Britva had always been a violent and unpredictable individual (in large part responsible for why he was never married). He ordered any record or name of his family eradicated across the kingdom, seemingly intending to leave no clear legacy when he dies- if asked, he answers that he wants someone to ‘fight for it’.
For all his explosive violence, Britva is a cunning man, and thus while he is forbidden from directly appearing in many foreign courts, still maintains a large amount of political influence. He seems to have currently set his sights on antagonizing the Fowls- Artemis the First describes him as a “truly loathsome individual”.
Kingdom:
The North kingdom, as the name implies, covers perhaps the broadest stretch of territory overall, securing the entire northernmost reaches of the continent. Scattered with vast mountain stretches and perpetually locked in a state of midwinter, what the kingdom lacks in suitable farmland, they make up for in rich harvests of timbers (an important resource in kingdoms further south, where most forests are guarded by fairy folk), furs, and fish. Almost entirely isolated save for scattered routes through which goods are traded, Britva himself rarely leaves save for the most important political matters, sending his lackeys to make the difficult journey instead.
Notes:
- House symbol was a wolf, is now a white bear or wolverine.
- Britva fights barehanded, or with bludgeoning weaponry- he generally dislikes swords/knives or wearing heavy armor. He has a set of spiked, sharpened gauntlets that belonged to his father, though he really uses them more for beating things into pulp than as the slashing implements they were designed to be.
House of Spiro:
Ruling Body:
King Spiro is the only living member of his immediate family- this was largely the fault of the traditional means of ascending to the throne… trial by combat, to the death. Spiro has yet to create an heir himself and seems largely disinterested in doing so- instead, it seems his cousin Costa is being lined up to follow his footsteps, though Spiro doesn’t seem to be particularly confident in him.
King Spiro is loud-mouthed and lacks tact in face-to-face conversation, making him unpopular with other rulers- his own people both fear and respect him, as while he is a heavy-handed ruler and easily offended, he is incredibly powerful. While Spiro is guided by his own self-interest, he genuinely cares about keeping his kingdom running and successful, and shows surprising skill in the actual management of the region… even if his volatile nature makes him unpredictable politically.
His greatest claim to fame is being the only living human to have successfully tamed a dragon- affectionately named ‘Lincoln’, it has grown to a massive size under his care. It’s origins are unknown, and Spiro keeps information about his prized pet under close wraps for its protection- he seems to have a genuine affection for the creature, however, and the two protect each other fiercely. Anyone who harms the dragon in battle is liable to lose their head.
Head of Command:
Arno Blunt, Spiro’s general- and seemingly the closest thing he has to a friend. Originating from overseas, Arno traveled with a foreign military for a long time before eventually deserting that life, favoring the kingdoms. He was a mercenary for many years before joining Spiro’s ranks, and has a wealth of knowledge about other kingdoms and their habits that Spiro heavily relies on when making political maneuvers.
He considers Domovoi Butler to be something of a rival, and at gatherings between kingdoms he will seek the bodyguard out to antagonize him. Domovoi tolerates this with as much patience as he can muster, but their kings have had to order the two to break up sudden scuffles more than once.
Kingdom:
Spiro’s kingdom is divided between mountains and grasslands, with their easternmost border following the same coastline that the Fowls call home further north. The grasslands exist within a ‘rain shadow’, making them more suitable for agriculture than one would typically expect in such an arid environment- within the mountain range lies a wealth of precious metals and stone, the kingdom’s chief exports.
Spiro’s kingdom is responsible for many of the tournaments, games and gathering events for the various kingdoms, as he is incredibly fond of sports and competition. These events are supposedly neutral ground, though cheating is common- the largest tournament, the Tournament Of Kings, is often hosted at his own coliseum (where Spiro hosts gladiator fights during the ‘off season’).
Notes:
- Spiro’s palace is still The Needle, housed within his capitol, ‘Chargestone’.
- Lincoln does not appear often outside of battle within the kingdom, though he serves as Spiro’s mount when it comes to traveling across borders/in war. He’s trained to come to the sound of a particular whistle, but his commands are hand signals (or foot signals when riding, like steering a horse) and voice command alike, meaning the whistle alone is not enough to control him.
- Spiro fights with a traditional sword or a flail, though he rarely chooses traditional combat when other options are available, given his frail build.
House Valentine:
Ruling Body:
King Valentine has no current heirs or family- in fact, he is not of royal blood whatsoever, and his rise to power is the subject of much mystery and discussion within the social circles he frequents. He does, however, have a handful of wards he is currently watching over in his palace, with an eye on a few of them as potential future kings. He has no interest in starting his own family and grows increasingly annoyed when questioned about it.
Wildly popular within his own kingdom, its surprising that Valentine is a king at all- he was originally a beloved bard. While the circumstances surrounding his rise to power are shrouded in mystery, it is undeniable that his kingdom is currently thriving under his care- trade is booming, and he has made it a point to travel to other kingdoms as frequently as possible to strengthen alliances. He doesn’t seem to quite grasp the political power he wields, treating other rulers as one would a social circle of friends- some feel, however, that this might simply be a clever ruse to disguise his true nature.
Kingdom:
Valentine’s kingdom is primarily coastal, consisting of lush rainforest surrounding several estuaries and river mouths- it is located to the east of Spiro’s kingdom.
A haven of the arts, Valentine’s kingdom lacks a true army in favor of Valentine simply keeping himself out of wartime- a ‘neutral party’ in almost all affairs (save for when Spiro is involved), the kingdom also thusly serves as a refuge for countless criminals and underground organizations. Smuggling, drug production, and other illicit activities reign in certain areas, with little effort on Valentine’s part to stop them- in fact, he’d rather have a hand in their management, the price for his ‘blind eye’. In the safer regions, however, one can find beautiful artwork and music, delicious food and all the vices they can get their hands on- taking that into consideration, it’s not a surprise that Valentine is so beloved by his people.
Notes:
- Symbols consist of a serpent or an oleander.
- Valentine is a skilled poisoner and manipulator. By all accounts according to the tropes, this man should be the sinister advisor- but someone has handed him power and he insists on wearing it well.
- Affiliated with the Extinctionists, an order of knights and noblemen with the goal of eradicating magical creatures. Constantly irritating Jon by implying he would ‘very much like a dragonskin coat’.
- Valentine dislikes hand-to-hand combat and generally avoids it whenever possible- he has no particular affinity towards a handheld weapon. Takes on the role of torturer and executioner himself when necessary, however, bringing into question his feelings on violence.
Thieve’s Guild:
Ruling Body:
Foxworth Fowl, the ‘long lost’ brother of Artemis the First. Fleeing his brother’s kingdom at an early age due to fears of being ‘removed’ from the throne’s running by his parents, Foxworth made his living as a thief and bard, eventually becoming infamous across the kingdom through his exploits- after a time, he began to gather other thieves like him and established himself as the leader of a band of criminals under the banner of the Thieve’s Guild.
Cunning, manipulative and somewhat lazy, Foxy prefers to spend his time nowadays in some hideaway or another, surrounded by stolen goods and his occasional lovers as he entertains his followers with charming songs and stories. On rare occasion, he’ll sneak his way into the Fowl’s palace to visit his family, but contact with them is sparse due to him frequently changing location- he visits more often now that he has nephews, however, and will always shelter his family if they should so need it (even if he’ll nag his brother’s ear off about it the whole way).
‘Kingdom’:
Foxworth’s Guild do not have many set fortresses, preferring to roam in scattered clusters that occasionally reconvene at their ‘king’s’ orders for some celebration or another. There is a primary base of operations tucked away in one of the major kingdoms, but none of the rulers so far have been able to uncover it (though not for lack of trying).
The Guild is a den of thieves and crooks, and they tend to leave behind a trail of missing riches wherever they may go. Methods vary- robbery of traveling merchants occurs just as often at their hand as a con, though Foxy himself prefers less violent methods. There’s a strict code not to harm each other ‘unless unavoidable’, and Foxworth does not tolerate anyone ratting out another, with someone doing so leading to their exile (or death). While thievery is their preferred method of operations, the Guild can occasionally be convinced to spy in other kingdoms, or do assassination work, though Foxy only seems to allow it when it’s for someone he’s taken a liking to.
Notes:
- All Guild members are marked somewhere on their bodies with a particular sigil, used to recognize one another in the field.
- While the Guild is a den of thieves and conpeople, Foxy himself isn’t coldhearted, and as such it has also become a haven for young runaways or those down on their luck due to the kingdom’s rulings. He remembers his time all alone on the streets well enough- if someone wants to hide or is in great danger, there’s a chance Foxy can be convinced to get them somewhere safe, or keep them protected.

Story Pile: Lords and Ladies
From time to time I talk about Discworld books, and I will usually say that there’s no reading order. I operate on the assumption that readers have a degree of object permanence, that they are capable of telling if a story happens before or after sometihng and that if you find a story of a character that includes a former drunk in one book, and then find a story of a drunk in another book, you will be able to put the sequence of events in a meaningful order without being overwhelmed by the challenge of the book. The Discworld books are contained stories for dedicated readers capable of managing the complexities of understanding that I could reach when I was twelve years old and in a cult, I do not doubt any adult curious about them will do fine without an authoritive reading list to ensure they do not miss any of the lore.
But.
Ugh I hate that.
But but but but. But! There is a single Discworld Book that I know of (now) which opens with an author’s note that you need to be at least a little bit aware of previous stories in order to appreciate the events of this book. And then it tells you those events.
If I did this more often, I imagine I’d introduce these things by hey, let me tell you about my favourite Discworld book. But let’s do that anyway. Don’t worry, no major spoilers, just a sort of vague gesturing at the plot that’s already covered by the book jacket.
Lords and Ladies is a story of the Discworld, set in the kingdom of Lancre, about the characters of the Witches; Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, and Magrat. Granny is a stern, hawkish woman who has all the makings of a grand and powerful force, a queen in waiting, and too obstinate and selfcentered to ever dare to let that happen. Nanny Ogg is like if that one raunchy grandma stereotype was scrutinised down to the ground, and Magrat is what a lot of people in the 90s really were when they imagined themselves to be ‘wytches.’ This character dynamic, in addition to fulfilling the classic Sonic/Shadow/Tails dialectic, also presents the reader with an opportunity for a rare thing in the Discworld in that it’s a very big story set in a very small place.
Lancre is nowhere. Lancre is a British Midlands vision of a Fantasy Kingdom That’s A Bit Like The British Midlands. It is mountainous and hilly as conceived by a country with literally no mountains on it, so they have the prevalence of a little kid’s drawing of a map. Its castle teeters, its people are all rural workers with probably no flat land to grow crops on and they drink a foul alcohol that is made out of apples.
Well, mostly apples.
Lancre is also ground zero for the invasion of a parasitic universe, a dimension that does not have the ability to ‘properly’ sustain itself, and from which flood its own native dominant species, a predatory humanoid perfectly suited to the consumption of Lancre’s own dominant species. There’s a repeated theme in Pratchett’s work of humans as entities in an ecosystem – it was something he played with in Reaper Man with the Maul. Now, seeing the presence of a multi-layer shopping body that displaced all local businesses in the name of consolidation and rent-seeking as some sort of parasitic creature that needed to be addressed through the presence of a violent, repelleing antibody could be seen as a suggestion of the validity of anticapitalist terrorism,
The story of Lords And Ladies is in the tradition of the Discworld narrative one where the author picks up on an existing idea from another fantasy convention and decides to grapple with it in the specific idiom of the Discworld. This requires a deeply aware consideration of the fantasy genre as a whole and the storytelling tropes that underpin that genre. In Reaper Man the idea of the cosmic meaning of a figure of death was the centerpiece. In Thud there’s a serious consideration of intractable fantasy grudges between dwarves and trolls. In Unseen Academicals, it’s Orcs.
Lords and Ladies is the Discworld take on elves, which at the time I read it, was a real shock to imagine that someone might not like elves. After all, Elves are like humans but cool and exotic, right? Why would an author not use elves as a chance to show something cool and a different, uh, uh, do I have an alternative to exotic, guess I don’t, an exotic other culture!
It’s truly embarrassing to consider with the benefit of hindsight, how much ‘elf culture’ is just ‘what white guys think even whiter guys would be like.’
I don’t really get paganism. Not properly. I like paganism; I like the invocation of a time before Christianity, a reminder that cultures do not die, they are killed, and that before my identity was wallpapered over by three layers of colonial dictation, there is a line that reaches from who I am back to people who would make up stories about horse skulls that sing cruel poems, and that that is more real to me than the political conveniences of a Roman emperor. I find it in the edges of things; of characters who evoke reminders that there were things before Christ’s God, and that there were things better than America’s Christ.
Lords and Ladies is some fantastically pagan stuff.
If you’ve not read the book (and I recommend it, I like it a lot), the cover sometimes gives away one major event of the book, showing a character standing before a slumbering, slouched, enormous humanoid form with antlers. In the ending of Narnia books, I remembered a description of a giant, of something enormous, standing over the waters before finally settling down into sleeping, that when the great book of Narnia closed, it closed on a frozen sea with someone sleeping inside it. It stands to reason in my mind that there is a shape of something giant in the historical memory. That there is something that we know, at the end of days, there will be there, standing on the horizon, as we watch our last days end.
I don’t think there will be but I think it’s real cool to use it as a visual metaphor for your time is over. Something about the wrongness of the scale, of looking up at the sun and seeing it blink, that kind of thing.
In Lords and Ladies, the witches explore these things. Why are there standing stones. What are they for. How do they work. Why should they work that way? Do you need to understand what it is to work for them to work? Are old practices inherently wrong? Are they weaker for us trying to understand them?
All told in the confrontation between a thing that sleeps, until it doesn’t have to any more.
I think Lords and Ladies has one of my favourite examples of weaponised pronouns in a story. Every elf in the narrative outside the King and Queen are referred to not as he or she or they, but instead as it. The Elves are not people with personhood as we understand it and they would not see you or me as people with personhood either. They do not consider us as entities and do not see our individuality as a thing to explain or explore – just as much as they do not consider their own individuality as meaningful to us.
There is no misgendering an elf, because an elf is not a thing that has gender or a social identity. Elves are stories. Elves are cruel and dark stories, stories about things that are Just So and rituals performed out of fear of consequences that are made up until they are very much very real.
Lords and Ladies is one of my favourite Discworld books because of how much of it is about righteous violence agianst a relentless, abusive invader. There is no ‘ah, but we have won, so we need to be the bigger and more morally appropriate people’ here. This is a story where an invading queen gets punched in the face and axed in the gut. In a very pure way, this is a story about what happens when a dehumanising colonial force arrives to consume your past and future for its own individual enrichment and what it’s worth doing to protect yourself from it, about what violence in even the meekest it incurs.
Even the blind and meek and voiceless have gods.
Check it out on PRESS.exe to see it with images and links!
