MY FRIEND WILL: Making Much Ado About Life, Living and Friendship In A Charming Comedic Culture Clash
Imagine if William Shakespeare, arguably the greatest dramatist in recorded history, still walked among us today. What would he think of our incredibly advanced yet still immeasurably flawed world? Tom & Harry Holland Short ‘Last Call’ Charms Sands International Film Festival Opening-Night Gala
Also in the building this evening was Spider-Man actor Tom Holland, who accompanied his younger brother Harry up to Scotland to present Last Call, a short project they shot together in London. The film follows a desperate mother searching for a way to reconnect with her son. Tom stars opposite veteran Scottish actress Lindsay Duncan (Blackbird) in the pic, which first screened at Tribeca. The audience inside The Byre Theatre in St Andrews was charmed by the short, with many visitors remarking on its ambition and skill following the screening. Running over a brisk 19 minutes, the short could be compared, thematically, to Andrew Haigh’s last film All of Us Strangers.
Introducing Last Call alongside Trzebiatowska, Harry said he crafted the pic while helping out around the set of his brother’s film 2021 war film Cherry, shot by the Russos.
“When I wrote the film we were in Cleveland, Ohio, working on Cherry and I was struggling with my own mental health,” Harry said. “I knew I wanted to create something and the theme of mental health would be at the forefront of whatever I wrote.”
He added: “As I look back at the film now — I wrote it five years ago — the theme and topic feel as topical now as it did all those years ago.”

Goodbye Volcano High Wins Tribeca Games Award
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Goodbye Volcano High was featured this week at Tribeca Festival, an annual event in New York City showcasing a diverse selection of film, episodic, talks, music, games, art, and immersive media. Each year, innovative storytelling experiences from all over the world are shared and a panel of judges award winners to a variety of different categories.
Since 2021, they have presented an award for the featured video games, called the Tribeca Games Award. This year, Goodbye Volcano High won that award, making it the third game to receive it. The jury comments were:
For how much this game felt of the moment and questions whether you should still care about anything when everything sucks — complete with doom scrolling, dinosaurs and high school band drama.
This is the second award recognition GVH has gotten since it's debuted demos, the first being a Best Indie Game nomination at PAX East 2023, but this is its first big win!
I just want to congratulate everyone on the KO_OP team bringing this game to life. Since its reveal in 2020, it's been on the receiving end of transphobic backlash from both gamers and 4chan. Any other dev team would have buckled and cancelled. But KO_OP really believes in what they're making and I couldn't be more proud of them. ♥️

While fans may know him best for his screen work (The X-Files, Californication), musician-actor-author David Duchovny has carved out a larger creative role over the years, authoring six books and releasing three albums while earning rave reviews (and a dedicated fanbase) for his live shows.
His latest album, Gestureland, was released in 2021 during the pandemic. While the feelings on Gestureland are intimate, the music is expansive – it evokes ’70s California pop, alternative rock, folk and country. In its own right, it is timeless music.
‘I wouldn’t go about imitating anyone,’ says Duchovny. ‘But for me it’s about classic rock, the British Invasion, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Aimee Mann — you fall in love with certain sounds.’
With his two earlier releases (2015’s Hell or Highwater and 2017’s Every Third Thought) Duchovny earned critical acclaim; Allmusic called his music ‘eloquent, alt-rock-kissed country-folk in the vein of Wilco and the Wallflowers’ while the Boston Globe praised Duchovny’s voice, noting ‘he sings with a parched resonance and just a hint of rasp. He is rather heartfelt’.
Helping achieve all these sounds: Colin Lee, Mitch Stewart and Pat McCusker, three former college friends from the Berklee College of Music and longtime studio musicians who have worked with Duchovny on all of his records. ‘David is so joyful about making music, and his lyrical approach and his way of looking at songs is like poetry,’ says Lee. ‘He creates stuff that excites us as musicians.’
Since the release of Gestureland, Duchovny released a new novel, Truly Like Lightning, a novella, The Reservoir, and co-authored (with illustrator Phillip Sevy) the graphic novel Kepler. He has also adapted his own novel, Bucky F*cking Dent, to film, premiering it at the Tribeca Film Festival.
But like all good musicians, he’s anxious to get back on the road and perform these new songs live. ‘David has so much energy and charisma, it’s easy for him to carry the show,’ says his bandmate Stewart. ‘I always get such a kick playing live,’ adds the singer. ‘We make our show into a whole evening and take people on a journey. I can’t wait to do a version of this album for a tour.’

The Sit In: Harry Belafonte Hosts The Tonight Show is an incredibly captivating documentary that discusses both a week in US television history, late night television, the Civil Rights Movement, and so much more.
The centrepiece/focal point of the documentary is the week that Harry Belafonte (pictured above) hosted The Tonight Show (as a guest host, at the time it was hosted by Johnny Carson), the guests he had on (including Dr. King!), and the television landscape at the time and afterwards (such as discussing a lack of Black and other marginalized voices in late night programming today).
It is a very approachable piece, you do not need to know much about the topic in order to learn from the documentary. Though it would be beneficial to know what The Tonight Show is (a late night chat show currently hosted by Jimmy Fallon) and who Dr. King is (an incredibly significant figure in the US Civil Rights Movement. It would also be beneficial to know that his image today has been very sanitised).
I think that the documentary provides a good understanding as to how systemic racism has been intertwined into nearly every system/institution. If you are looking to have a documentary double feature, I would recommend Stamped from the Beginning, based on the book of the same name, as it provides a more direct history and background on just how pervasive racism is (and how race was invented).

It's been more than a month since a dozen civil rights and religious groups say they sent a letter to the White House calling on President Joe Biden sign an executive order to study reparations by Juneteenth, or this Sunday, June 19, marking the emancipation of enslaved African Americans.

The study activists wants comes after a decades-long push to establish a 13-person reparations commission in Congress.

Shortly after the end of the Civil War, Union leaders promised formerly enslaved families "40 acres and a mule" -- a promise never fulfilled.
However, a reminder of the centuries-old promise has languished in Congress for decades. H.R. 40, the Commission to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African Americans Act, has been introduced in every legislative session since 1989.
The measure seeks to establish a commission to study "and consider a national apology and proposal for reparations for the institution of slavery, legal and other racial and economic discrimination, and the impact of these forces on living African Americans, to make recommendations to the Congress on appropriate remedies ..."
In recent years, the bill has gained some political traction.
In 2019, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, hundreds of members of Congress and over 350 organizations, including the U.S. Conference of Mayors, NAACP and ACLU publicly announced support for reparations.
At the Tribeca Film Festival, "The Big Payback," a documentary examining reparations, directed by "Living Single" actress Erika Alexander, premiered at the legendary festival in early June.

Former White House press secretary Jen Psaki reiterated in 2021 that President Biden supported the study of reparations. However, when asked if he would support a bill on reparations Psaki said, "We'll see what happens through the legislative process."
Asked if Biden supports an executive order on the study of reparations, Psaki said at the time, "it would be up to him, he has executive order authority, he would certainly support a study, and we'll see where Congress moves on that issue."
A White House official told ABC News on Thursday, President Biden still "supports a study of reparations and the continued impacts of slavery but he is very clear that we don't need a study to advance racial equity."

Nkechi Taifa is director of the Reparation Education Project, and has been calling for reparations for moire than 50 years. In 1987, she was one of the founders of the National Coalition of Blacks for Reparations in America (N'COBRA), an organization that worked closely with Democratic Rep. John Conyers to draft the introduction of H.R. 40 in 1989. She says now is the time for Biden to sign an executive order so the commission can be up and running before the end of Biden's presidency.
Taifa says she hopes the display at the ellipse sends a message that reparations advocates need to be paid attention to, and Black people should not be taken for granted.
She told ABC News, "If they think they're gonna rest on Juneteenth because it's a holiday and a watered down policing reform bill -- that's not enough. Black people have been run roughshod over, you know, for centuries, and it just, it just cannot continue."
Joan Neal, deputy executive director and chief equity officer at NETWORK, a social justice advocacy group founded by U.S. religious sisters tells ABC News, that "Slavery was a sin, that was the original sin of this country, and we believe that unless you acknowledge your sin and you make a firm determination to never do it again, and then make restitution for what was lost. You still have not been forgiven."
She added, "All parties have to be willing to stand up and face the sin in order for the sin to be forgiven and in order for things to be whole again."

Destry Allyn Spielberg’s Directing Debut Will Be ‘Please Don’t Feed The Children’; ‘Downton Abbey’s Michelle Dockery Starring
By Mike Fleming Jr
March 22, 2023 8:30am
Michelle Dockery is set to star in Destry Allyn Spielberg’s directorial debut, Please Don’t Feed the Children. The elevated genre feature film will begin production late April in New Mexico. Scripted by Paul Bertino, the psychological thriller is produced by Jason Dubin and his Perry Street Films, Josh Kesselman and Michael Hagerty.
In Please Don’t Feed the Children, after a viral outbreak ravaged the country’s adult population, a group of orphans heads south in search of a new life, only to find themselves at the mercy of a deranged woman harboring a dangerous secret.
Spielberg, daughter of The Fabelmans helmer, will do this film before the one on which she originally expected to make her feature debut, Four Assassins (and a Funeral). The latter, a Kingsman-meets-Knives Out meets-Succession-style script by Ryan Hooper that made the 2021 Black List, will percolate a bit longer but is still in the works from Basil Iwanyk & Erica Lee’s Thunder Road Pictures. The pic will just move back as the other one was ready to go.
Spielberg won Best Thriller at City of Angels Women’s Film Festival in 2022 for her short film, Let Me Go the Right Way. She co-wrote the screenplay with Owen King, and it premiered at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival, with Hopper Penn and Brian D’Arcy James starring. Her work as an actress includes Licorice Pizza and an episode of the miniseries I Know This Much Is True.
Said Spielberg: “I am so grateful to have the opportunity to bring this story to the screen with such a collaborative and inspirational team. This picture is so much more than just a horror film. It’s a dream come true to work with a talent such as Michelle Dockery. I am excited to elevate the genre with our incredible cast and crew.”
Dockery is Emmy nominated for playing Lady Mary on Downton Abbey and its two film spinoffs. She also was Emmy-nommed for the Scott Frank-created limited series Godless and co-starred in the Guy Ritchie-directed The Gentlemen and opposite Chris Evans in the Morten Tyldum-directed Apple TV+ limited series Defending Jacob and the SJ Clarkson-directed limited Netflix series Anatomy of a Scandal. She just wrapped Stephen Knight’s six-part limited series This Town.
Dockery is represented by WME, Anonymous Content, Hamilton Hodell and Johnson Shapiro Slewett; Spielberg is repped by WME, Sugar 23 and Gang Tyre.
