Spring Amidst My Wintertide - By Jusang (7.5/10)
Tumblr media
I've decided to give this author another chance. I'm sure you can see why. When the art is good it's great. Here we get a prime example of a puppy yandere with actual animal characteristics. It's an edgy Beauty and the Beast, complete with confinement, if you want a really short summary.
Perfect princesses only exist in the spring. When the land is fruitful and the citizens are happy that is when the royal family flourishes. The allure and beauty of royal blood dies with withering prosperity.
Tumblr media
Serun Greenwood was a beautiful, wealthy princess. She had a loving and large family. Her family wasn't too corrupt. They had a treasury. An army. Loyal servants, but in the end men are dogs. Dogs must eat. Winter makes beasts of us all.
Tumblr media
War. Starvation. Both hit the nation at once. Everything drained away during those seven years. Serun Greenwood watched her family die. They were torn apart for sport by soldiers, inside the castle she once called home.
She is suffering from terrible survivors guilt.
Tumblr media
Her life is over.
She is a weak princess.
She has been captured, and she is going to be sacrificed to the wolves of the black mountain. The people are mad for spring. They clamor for food, but every harvest keeps getting harder. She was going to be executed....but using a royal princess as a spring sacrifice will please the gods more. So she gets transported through the freezing hail, all the way up.
Tumblr media
She is known as the fairest maiden by the way.
Tumblr media
Now, her soldiers see her as a piece of meat.
Tumblr media
They leave her in the cage, to freeze to death and be eaten later. She won't last long. All she has is a towel. She looks back, and she is conflicted.
She hates surviving hardship, and life without her princess title, but she doesn’t want to die.
Tumblr media
The wolves come, and her depression snaps away. The fog clears. She wants to live. She wants to start anew. She doesn't care about being a princess. Not now. Not when she knows what people are like.
She just wants to live.
Tumblr media
She locks eyes with a huge, white wolf. This is a short story. It feels like it should be much longer, but it is enjoyable for these reasons.
The love interest is a supernatural creature. Not just some guy with animal ears. He's not all powerful either. He has a human form, but it's not like he's the absolute king of beasts. The other wolves try to eat her, while he tries to woo her. He convinces her to let him kiss and touch her, so she can have his scent and be protected from the other wolves. The white wolf has loved the princess for a long time. He saw her once when she was younger, and he's an obsessive sort of animal humanoid...thing.
It works.
Tumblr media
I don't know the whole story, but the short length is disappointing. "Monster" yanderes usually get watered down, but in this case the princess does have to live in the wilderness. Not a generic fantasy country. The beast prince is just a beast, and there's no country to return to. The princess is also mentally unstable, which makes her budding relationship even muddier.
It's dark.

The Immortals Quartet
Tumblr media
Time to chat about another of Tamora Pierce's beloved heroines and one of her early quartets. This is also the quartet that--in my entirely subjective experience--catches a lot of guff for its romance subplot. But we'll get to that. These are some of my favorite books of Pierce's, and I'm pretty sure that I read these after the Alanna and Kel books, although they were her second published quartet, coming before Kel. Let's talk The Immortals Quartet.
Veralidaine Sarrasri, unlike Alanna and Kel, is not originally Tortallen. Our girl is Gallan, and when we first meet her in Wild Magic, she is recovering from bandits sacking her village, burning down her house, and killing her family and all their animals. She's also desperate to hide what she thinks is a form of madness from every human she runs across, which gets really complicated when Numair starts teaching her how to harness her wild magic. And for just a hot second, can I say how much I love Numair in this series? He has just as much character as Daine and I am never NOT here for phenonemally powerful mages who are also basically oversized puppies.
Getting to watch Daine develop relationships with Numair, Onua, Alanna and George, the royal family, and the Queen's Riders is such fun, and so well done that when Daine finally feels safe enough to explain why she sometimes seems recalcitrant about her magic lessons it feels immensely earned. These relationships also become immensely foundational to the rest of the series, as does Daine's b-plot but still really compelling arc about hating Stormwings.
The Stormwing arc really finds traction in Wolf Speaker. In my experience, most people say that In the Realms of the Gods is their least favorite Immortals book, but for me, Wolf Speaker takes that prize. Not at all because it's a bad book, but for me it's the most forgettable of the four. Daine and Numair are investigating sus nonsense in Fief Dunlath, and there are blood rain and shape shifting/mind riding shenanagins and Daine begins to have holes poked in her Stormwing prejudice courtesy of Rikash Moonsword. It's a fine book, and the subplots with the wolves and ogres are compelling, but for whatever reason this book does not stick in my head.
The book that does stick in my head and is unequivocally my favorite of this quartet is Emperor Mage. This book follows the Tortallen peace delegation to Carthak, and geopolitical and divine shenanagins ensue. Dain's relationships with Kaddar and Ozorne--and particularly how Numair and Ozorne's history colors both those relationships--are again central to the plot. The Graveyard Hag is also actively throwing broom handles between the spokes of Daine's wheels by giving Daine the power to bring skeletons to a seeming of life.
That gets absolutely amazing because the Graveyard Hag wants Daine to reanimate human skeletons, but Daine makes the PHENOMENAL point that humans forget literal walking nightmares really fast. What humans don't recover fast from is when you literally raze their centers of government to the ground, including food stores, records of all kinds, and the freaking treasury. So instead of making human skeletons dance through the streets, Daine reanimates DINOSAUR SKELETONS and wrecks absolute shop. It's amazing, I wouldn't change a thing.
The other thing I love about this book is Numair yo-yoing between being an experienced intelligence operative and black robe mage and a complete idiot. He is tangled up in plans to free slaves and overthrow Ozorne and yet he still somehow manages to forget all of that and swing at Ozorne when he suggests that Numair is banging Daine. Numair. Honey, sweetie, friend, you cannot be THAT much of an idiot. And the best part is, at least three other characters call him on that idiocy. This book is fantastic.
In the Realms of the Gods is the book that, in my experience, gets the most flak from fans. My experience has been that people object to the student/teacher dynamic between Daine and Numair deveoping into a romance and the significant age gap between the two characters as the romance develops. People also seem to feel that this book is too long and drags in places. I don't tend to find that the book is draggy and long, but that tends to be a very "your mileage may vary" thing for readers.
In terms of the age gap and student teacher dynamics, I want to start off very clear: In real life, student-teacher relationships are never ok, are always predatory, and I do not support. However, to paraphrase Red from OSP, not every book that shows things that aren't unequivocally morally good do not need a "Do Not Try This At Home" sticker on the cover. Books don't have to be morally instructive, they don't have to show the best possible healthy relationships, they just have to be interesting. And honestly? I find Daine and Numair interesting. On top of that, Tamora Pierce is aware enough as an author that Daine and Numair actually do (however briefly) discuss the potential pitfalls of the age gap between them. They don't address the student/teacher thing, but then I wouldn't expect them to because that's not the relationship they have in this book. They are more partners than student/teacher. All this to say, I can understand why people dislike this romance, but I'm not here to throw shade, because honestly I enjoyed it.
I also enjoyed meeting and learning about Daine's parents, exploring the literal Realm of the Gods and all the wibbly wobbly timey wimey chaos shenanagins, and the conclusion of Daine's Stormwing arc. (And how dare Pierce make me cry that hard over Rikash. That was uncalled for.)
Overall, I deeply loved this quartet, and Daine is a welcome change from the very martial Alanna and Kel. She also represents an evolution of the magic systems in Tortall, which was really compelling and refreshing.

final part of the commission from @thicity-dicity ! thank for the commission love~
gn!pre relationship headcanons
Diasomnia edition
Malleus Draconia
he wants to kidnap you whenever you’re talking to Leona
gets angy if you have to cancel any plans with him and suddenly there’s a hurricane outside
keeps bringing you shiny things
this includes used soda cans don’t ask just accept it
praise him and he’ll expect praise from then on
let’s you style his hair and will walk around proudly with it for as long as possible
if you’re a touchy feely person he can get a lil awkward but he tries just give him time
he’s just as bad as Kalim with spoiling you with gifts
dude would happily give you the key to the treasury if you asked
please be careful with what you say, he may take it the wrong way and the shenanigans that ensue can be just a huge headache
he confesses during one of your nightly walks
kisses your hand after you accept, promising to give you the world
he is only half joking tread carefully-
Lilia Vanrouge
another one you kinda just end up dating
he’s always trying to feed you his terminal cooking I pray for you health
don’t feel bad about refusing him, he is very aware that his cooking can send you to the hospital
if you really can’t then don’t worry, he will take care of any medical bills that you get and will make sure you only get the best treatment
more pranks and spooks lucky you
if you really don’t like it then he’ll stop, he respects your wishes of course peepaw wasn’t raised to be a pansy

he can hold his liquor well don’t worry he’ll make sure you’re taken care of
hangs off of you no matter how tall you are, he’ll happily float in the air while he’s draped himself over you
study buddy! he loves helping you study, seeing you get happy after acing a test makes his old dusty heart soar
starts leaving his clothes in your room and you end up doing the same at some point
you realize you’re dating after he asks if you can make out
yes it’s random but he really wants to kiss you okay please let him even if it’s just a smooch on the nose
Silver
THE SLOWBURN OF THE FUCKING CENTURY JESUS FUCKING CRIST
YOU BOTH COULD LITERALLY SAY I LOVE YOU AND IT WON’T PROCESS IN HIS MIND UNTIL IT'S THREE MONTHS LATER
only Lilia picks up on his crush and of course ropes Malleus and Sebek into his schemes to get the two of you together
expect to get locked in the closet with him at least four times a week
he’s either more awake or even sleepier around you
his energy syncs up with yours it’s really weird
will listen to you ramble or rant for hours and still be able to stay awake
Sebek thinks he’s been abducted by aliens and won’t shut up until Lilia smacks him with Malleus’ dorm uniform staff
he slept with/on you once and now can’t sleep without you
all but moves into your room or vice versa
he ends up confess like a knight in shining armor
takes you to secluded place in the forest on horseback
gets down on one knee and everything
forgot the flowers but that’s okay it’s the thought that counts
Sebek
The moment he knows his feelings he spends a week denying them. Lilia has to literally smack some sense into him. Suddenly he becomes oddly quiet and helpful to you. Follows you around like a puppy. Gets so sad when you scold him. Glares at anyone who touches you so hard their self confidence melts. Confesses with a written letter. He’s so old school. Gives a huge goofy grin when you accept but tries to hide it by coughing into his hand.

Happy Birthday to my First Mutual and kindred cat mama, @stygianoir!
(Side note, I am definitely not awake, cause I'm like 80 years old, and it's 3 in the morning here, but I wanted you to get this right away)
Anywho, You have some new messages on that phone that Idia made for you. I've transcribed them here so you can read them.
You have 7 unheard messages. Thursday, 12 am.
"Mademoiselle Trickster, it is truly a great agony that our birthdays are separated by a mere day. Just imagining the two of us drawing our first breaths under the same star! Ah! It sends a shiver down my spine. But it matters not, for soulmates will find each other no matter what. Have you any idea how deeply you have ensnared your hunter's heart? Non, Mon ange, for if you had any idea it would make you a cruel mistress. Today on the day that you have blessed this world with your life, I fully intend to show how deeply I adore you. Be ready for me."
Thursday, 3 am.
"I just finished this game that reminded me of you, and I remembered it's your birthday today. You know how I feel about you lmao, but just thought I'd call you to say Happy Birthday since I won't be in class irl today. Ortho is gonna give you your gift at some point, so look out for him. And I know you wanted to go to a cat cafe with me to celebrate, but I programmed a vr thing that we can do in my room instead so…yeah."
Thursday, 10 am.
"I know it's your birthday, my sweet potato, but you better not be sleeping the day away. Come to Pomefiore after classes, I'd like to pamper you for your special day. I've bought your favorite colors in nail polish, and the face mask I've picked out is the best on the market. I won't let you leave until you feel relaxed and are glowing, so be prepared. I'm ready to serve your every need today, sweet potato. You only need to ask."
Thursday, 3:15 pm.
"I know we just saw each other, but I wanted to make sure my favorite puppy is having a great birthday. I'm sure you're swamped with your other admirers today, but that doesn't excuse you from coming to see me. I expect you in my office at your earliest convenience to come pick up your gift. Don't keep your master waiting, or I shall be forced to retrain you. Unless that is what you want. I'm a very giving master. The choice is yours, pup."
Thursday, 4:26 pm
"Can I speak now? (Muffled background conversation) Are you sure that's the beep she was talking about? (Muffled laughing sounds) I forgot where I was supposed to speak into it." "Right here, my Lord." (Tapping sound) "And then I press this button?"
Thursday, 4:31 pm.
"My child of man! I lost you for a moment there, and I was very worried. The woman talking on your phone did not give very clear instructions. I wanted to wish you the happiest of birthdays, my queen, and remind you that that immortality potion I offered you is ready whenever you are. I am patient, but I would like for us to be able to celebrate together for an eternity. I have left your present on your doorstep. In it, you will find my favorite necklace from my treasury, and a shiny stone that I thought you would enjoy. If you have time today, I would like to show you a new ruin I discovered. We can go there this evening, and enjoy the stars together to end your special day. Then I can do the human thing that Lilia calls 'the move' so that we can huddle close together under the stars. I'll be waiting for you, my beloved."
Friday, 8 am.
"Prefect! I heard it was your birthday tod…yesterday. In all my generosity, I am allowing you to take today off of classes.  I know, I am too kind. To thank me, I expect you in my office within the hour, so that the two of us can spend your belated day together. I shall also treat you to a sweet at that new bakery in town. I am so magnanimous. Please make sure to leave your silly friends here. I rarely get to spend time alone with you, and they are not going to ruin this for me…us. I await your visit!"
End of Final Message. Beep.

Kalim and Yuu in the kitchen, what will they make?
Kalim gives me heavy platonic affection vibes. I'd hug and kiss the shit out of him like a good homie would. Chapter 5 spoilers, beware besties :)
Tumblr media
* Jamil's overblot really opened his eyes, so I love the whole idea of Kalim trying to become more self-sufficient after seeing how badly Jamil suffered. Support your homie(?), ig. (Seriously, he admires Jamil so much that it hurts to see sometimes)
* Who better to support the local Al-Asim than the hardy and tortured Ramshackle Prefect? Don't say anyone else, my heart will break.
* Chapter 5-30 had that moment of Kalim feeling the frustration of not being chosen as a main vocalist, and my god... Yuu and Kalim going out and doing something nice in the middle of the night was a Missed Opportunity™ in my eyes.
* Instead of letting Kalim sleep, Yuu (And Grim) drag him all the way to the school kitchen to make a comfort snack with him. Unfortunately, they will have to remember that Kalim barely has any experience cooking other than stirring a fucking pot. Of course, Kalim feels bad for sitting back and doing nothing, so he promptly begs Yuu to teach him how to cook. Puppy eyes and clinging to their shirt.
* Thus, their night is spent together in the kitchen making all kinds of food with Yuu being the teacher and Kalim trying not to mess up too badly. He's obviously going to try and go overboard on spices, so Yuu has to try their best to be his impulse control. If they have it themselves, that is.
+ Yuu standing behind Kalim, or attempting to, holding his hands and guiding him is what I live for. If he accidentally gets a cut on his hand, repent for your sins. (Just give him a cute cat bandage or some shit lol)
* Tummies full, hearts happy, the trio gets back to Ramshackle to get some much needed sleep. They're going to be scolded, but everyone notes that they seem much lighter than they were the previous day. (Epel is still suffering tho lmaooo 💀)
* This marks the beginning of the Becoming Kalim's Bestie arc. Jamil 100% notices this as Kalim starts asking less of him and running off to Yuu for lessons in cooking, cleaning, and basic everyday chores that he should seriously already know. He knows since he's been stalking watching them since their late night kitchen hangout.
+ Listen, Yuu seems somewhat responsible, but Jamil might be growing grey hairs if he sees them attempting to teach Kalim some wild ass cooking technique like flambė or toying with oil and water. He might even come marching right in there if they hand Kalim a knife. Call it a snake summoning, if you please.
* Personally, I'd think it'd be sort of a challenge to teach Kalim. Not because he's a terrible learner, but because Jamil is standing in your way. The guy was raised on serving Kalim to a T, and you'll have to hammer it in that Kalim is capable to be on his own. Fist fight Jamil, gain dominance.
* Anyway, Kalim has official become Yuu's little student, and now they can leech off of his riches every time he invites them to Scarabia for another lesson. They don't ask to be payed because Jamil will be eyeing them like a hawk if they ask a ridiculous amount. Kalim would gladly show his treasury if asked politely though. A chance to steal... They'd never do that would they? (A distant shi shi shi can be heard from the school hallways)
* Alright, someone go write a drabble or some shit with Yuu and Kalim being buddies. I can't be bothered to actually write a fic and post it without crying from anxiety </3
* Bonus art...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can tell I keep riding the line between platonic and romantic like a daredevil.

Best records 2022 - part two
So, in the latest episode of De Algemene Verwarring, #84, I mentioned that I put a list of what I think are the best records of 2023 on my personal Facebook page, and that is a bit of a pity for Facebook users that are not connected with me and even more for non-Facebook users, as someone pointed out. Some listeners are curious, but honestly, if you’re a regular listener of the show you should probably be familiar with most of these. And it won’t surprise many of you that there are quite some Swedish records in there. So, here we go. 5 to 1.
5.The Shifters - Open Vault (Adagio830) - The Shifters didn’t release anything new since 2020, and this compilation of demos, live tracks and home recordings was already put online on their Bandcamp page in that same year on one of those Bandcamp Fridays, I downloaded it back then and have been waiting for a vinyl release ever since.  Really hoping on actual new material from this band in 2023. I wanted to post the track The New Bleached Fuhrer, but I can only find the full album on the youtubes, so here it is.
youtube
4. Myriam Gendron - Ma Délire, Songs of Love, Lost and Found (Les Album Claus) - I was completely blown away by the track “C’est Dans Les Vieux Pays” when I first heard it on the Dynamite Hemorrhage podcast. Here’s another track that I really really love and like to singalong to.
youtube
3. Luster - Luster (Morc Records) - There are not a lot of bands where I tolerate the flute as an instrument. Luster is one of the bands I tolerate. Amazing record by this six-piece of Belgian experimental music scene stars, folk and shoegaze and drone.
youtube
2. Treasury Of Puppies - Mitt Stora Nu (Discreet Music) - the difficult second album from the Göteborg duo. Everyone likes their debut better. I don’t. Brilliant album.
youtube
1. Amateur Hour - Krökta Tankar Och Brända Vanor (Appetite) - this is the third studio album from the Swedish trio of Dan Johansson (Sewer Election Neutral, Enhet För Fri Musik Heinz Hopf,...), Hugo Randulv (Enhet För Fri Musik, Skiftande Enheter, Typical Girls) and Julia Bjernelind (Typical Girls), and not everyone think it’s their best one, but I do. This ideal mix between pop music, shoegaze, Cocteau Twins era goth music, and noise makes Amateur Hour a unique band and one that combines the best of all worlds that I like. Posting the track here with the best title of the year, 15 minutes of sheer beauty.

Chapter 61- A Dangerous Game is up!
Catching up to Thor was not the problem- Loki liked to think he had kept pace with his brother all his life- getting out ahead of him, was.
The distant roll of a growing storm was not entirely at his hands, but the elder Odinson’s anger boiled just enough to fuel it all the more. Though he would never say it aloud, Loki was at least somewhat grateful to Dr. Foster. It seemed, to him, that it was her more rational influence that had helped level his temper- and he tried very hard not to be offended that his own influence had not affected his brother in quite the same way.
“Brother, if I may-“ Loki began, approaching quickly to his brother’s right
“You may not.” Thor growled, hardly casting him a sidelong glance-knowing full well his younger brother would continue on, regardless.
“-Obviously there are far more pressing concerns at the moment, but I would be remiss if I neglected to tell you something very important about your betrothed. ”
The Crown Prince stopped, fist clenched and fully ready to send Loki flying back down the hall if it were necessary.
After all, he had survived far worse.
“Choose your words carefully, Loki.” Thor warned.
“I always do.” The younger replied, quickly stepping out in front of him.  “Now listen, you know you are so very dear to me-“ Thor cast Loki a disapproving glare that was conveniently ignored, “As is the good Lady Sif; but you must know…” Loki took a dramatic breath, steepling his fingers simply for effect. “She is…. An abhorrent conversationalist.”
Thor held his brother’s eyes, firm against the wry grin that had a tendency to defuse situations he did not always care to have defused.
“I am not in the mood, brother.” Thor groaned, pushing past Loki to continue towards his destination.
Out of sight, Loki’s grin quickly faded to a frown before he picked up pace once more. “I understand- however I do advise you address it sooner rather than later. Imagine being stuck on a very long ride- just the two of you; or even the absence of the most basic levels of dinner conversation! The potential consequences for your own mental state are almost too gruesome to imagine.”
“Loki-“
“Or! Heavens forbid she is left alone with a representative from another realm- or even your midgardian companions- they might never return again; although I imagine it would save the treasury some fair coin to cut out all that pageantry-“
The younger Odinson quickly felt a hand clasp over the back of his neck like he was some wayward puppy, another firmly over his mouth.
“Stop. Talking .” (Continued on AO3)

Continuation (2) of this puppy stampede and hair combing with @we-shall-remain here:
Tumblr media
Americano ends up wandering into the bedroom for Adelha to lead both handsome angels to follow. The puppy crawling under the bed to hunt for socks or perhaps some wayward toys. Which has Adelha sigh to then sit Michelangelo at her writing desk. The lady soon sitting on the bed as David works at removing the leaf bits from her hair.
The mention of Absalom has Adelha still with visible astonishment. But she soon gives a long sigh of air to relax and let the tension of her spine ease. “I do so dearly hope this means that Absalom has had the chance to clear the air with all of the family here in Chaldea. What I remember of scripture conveys how tragic and complicated things became. Yet I would gladly welcome all of your children into my treasury and home, David. I just hope I have enough tea in the pantry.”
The pink robin continues to sing in his cage as Americano emerges from under the bed with a very chewed up spider plush doll. The doll done in scraps of yellow and blue cloth to look a bit worn out as Americano tosses the doll out the door to then chase after it. Adelha watching to openly chuckle as she stays seated for David to continue his ministrations. “I’m going to have to remake that doll when it finally comes apart at the seams. Perhaps we may have a day of all your children sitting with me to make more of those spider dolls. We might also make some playdough for Jack and Nursery Rhyme to play with.”

The British left India in 1947 but with a very dirty conscience. We Indians of the farming marshal tribes Jatt, Gujjar, Pathan, Arian, Saini, etc., the once-born simpletons served the British faithfully and made them win the two world wars but they colluded with the twice-born shrewd people of business tribes and hypocritically divided our Jatt tribal homeland, Punjab plunging us into the sectarian civil war that could have been avoided. This is how they ignited this civil war:- 1. They knew that the people killed each other frantically in the name of religion as Catholics and Protestants did in Britain and so, they supported the heads of religious parties financially and paid them money secretly under the table. 2. There used to be elections held for the Parliament but no such election was held to hand over the Government into the hands of responsible political leaders in 1947. 3. They just colluded with the heads of religious Parties; all clever shopkeepers - Lala M.K. Gandhi, a Baniya, Lala Tara Singh Malhotra, a Khatri and Lala Mohd. Ali Jinnah, a Babla Bhatia. These Lalas least served in the British Army. 4. We Jatts of the Punjab served the British Army the best but we were divided into India and Pakistan like the deserted Christmas Puppy. 5. And our Governments were told that when you fight with each other, then we will sell you weapons of mass destruction to kill each other. What a business idea out of misery? Politics is a dirty game of the psychic hypocrites whom Jesus condemned the most and he was killed by them. Look what the USA, U.K. and other European collaborators are doing in the world today? End times are not far away – Matt. 13v24-30 and the TRIBULATIONS have already started from 14/05/2018 when the child-like USA President Donald Trump pressed the TRIBULATIONS BUTTON by declaring Jerusalem to be the Capital of Israel. Oliver's Twist
DECEMBER SUNLIGHT GLINTS OFF the bald, bronze head of a statue of the ever-serene Buddha, sitting in the lush backyard of a Mediterranean villa in Santa Monica. A few paces away, in a living room filled with Asian antiques, two more personages—also plump and sparsely haired—radiate inner peace. One is Tara Stone, 5 weeks old and deep in slumber. The other is her father—upon whose chest Tara sleeps as he lounges on an overstuffed sofa.
While Tara's mother, Chong Son Chong, 36, a Korean émigré and former actress and model, putters elsewhere in the house, the father smiles with deep satisfaction, dipping a finger into one of Tara's white booties to touch her baby skin. "She can feel my heart," says director Oliver Stone. "She's made me a happy man." He speaks again, examining the word like a flower: "Happiness."
Wait, wait—who is this zen, beatific puppy? The Oliver Stone we know is an angry, self-described provocateur. The familiar Stone is the one who, a couple of years ago, dismissed those who doubted the baroque conspiracy theories behind his film JFK as "chick s-t." He is a director so notorious for on-set tirades that Anthony Hopkins, who plays the title role in Stone's latest dive into history, Nixon, has said he expected "a kind of caveman." But while Stone doesn't deny there are brutish aspects to his character, he insists they are mere brush strokes—not the whole portrait. "There's no appreciation," he says, "that there's another side of me."
Stone now wants the world to see that other side. Chastened by the acrimonious end in 1993 of his 12-year marriage to his second wife, Elizabeth, 46—who lives with the couple's two sons, Sean, 11, and Michael, 4—the director insists he has embarked on a fresh, clear path in life. He has a new child, and a new relationship, with Chong. In their generally positive reviews of Nixon, critics, while not defending him against persuasive claims that he has taken his customary liberties with historical fact, have praised Stone's newfound "restraint." A Buddhist since he embraced the religion while making his 1993 saga of the Vietnamese experience of the war, Heaven & Earth, Stone says he has also found a degree of spiritual tranquility. In short, Oliver Stone wants us to know that at age 49 he believes he is growing up.
There are some signs it may be true—one being his decidedly un-Stone-like response to criticism of Nixon. Before it opened—to very disappointing box office business—the late President's normally private daughters, Tricia Nixon Cox, 49, and Julie Nixon Eisenhower, 47, read a script and issued a statement through the Nixon Library in Yorba Linda, Calif., decrying the movie as "character assassination." Since then, seemingly every Nixon Administration official, and a number of historians and neutral observers, have weighed in in a similar vein. "It is a despicable fairy tale," says former Treasury Secretary William Simon. "This is a vicious attack on a man," says onetime White House Chief-of-Staff Gen. Alexander Haig. Though Stone hasn't shrunk from defending his work, his responses have been far more measured than in the past. He wrote this month to John Taylor, head of Nixon Library, to suggest he convene a symposium on the late President's image, adding, "I understand the feelings you have about [the film]." In his turn, Taylor—who calls the movie sadistic—says he will invite Stone to a planned conference on movies about recent U.S. history.
Ironically, there are numerous parallels between Stone's life and Nixon's. Nixon, no matter how successful, never found personal peace; Stone has seemed equally driven. Growing up in New York City as the only child of Louis Stone (a stockbroker who died in 1985) and his wife, Jacqueline, Stone, like Nixon, rarely received much affection from his father. "Louis would never kiss Oliver," says Jacqueline. "He would shake his hand." Stone says his mother was loving but caught up in New York's arty social whirl. "When she was [home], she was perfect," he says. "But it was continual abandonment."
Compelled, perhaps, by a child's sense of powerlessness, Stone sought control. "He was not like other children—he was conscientious, tidy," says his mother. At age 6 on family visits to France, she says, he called upon his cousins to perform in sketches he wrote—and charged adults two francs to attend the show. "Oliver was the leader, and his cousins did the work. Oliver likes to have it his own way."
Behind it all, Stone says, "I was very insecure." The feeling intensified in 1960 when Stone was sent off to the Hill School in Pottstown, Pa., where he never felt he fit in. "I was nobody special," he says. "I felt invisible." Then, in his sophomore year, his parents divorced amid accusations of mutual infidelities, and Stone learned his father was deeply in debt. Stone's biographer, James Riordan, sees this as a formative moment. "After that, the whole world is like his parents," says Riordan, whose authorized bio, Stone, appeared last month. "There's always something deeper than the surface truth."
Hoping to find that something deeper, Stone says, "I took off into the world alone." He left Yale after his freshman year in 1965 to teach English in Vietnam. But he became bored and, craving to know "the bottom of life," enlisted in 1967 as an Army infantryman and was sent back to Vietnam. After a few weeks, he says, "I was becoming a jungle animal. I started out cerebral and civilized, and within two months I was operating on instinct."
Like many other soldiers, he was also operating on a range of drugs, from marijuana to LSD. After his discharge in 1968 he returned to the U.S. a heavy and indiscriminate user—a problem that plagued Stone, he says, until 1981, when he kicked a cocaine habit cold turkey.
Soon after he came home, drawing on a talent for writing stories and looking, he has said, for a way to "channel my rage" at the injustice he perceived in Vietnam, he enrolled in New York University's film program, graduating in 1971. After years of writing while getting by on odd jobs, he hit it big, winning the Best Screenplay Oscar in 1978 with Midnight Express.
The rage didn't disappear. James Woods, who starred in Stone's breakout film as a director, 1986's Salvador (and who plays White House Chief of Staff H.R. Haldeman in Nixon), recalls how he and Stone would pound one another's heads on the floor of their Mexican inn over artistic disagreements. "He bends you out of shape," says Woods. "He keeps you on edge—but he gets performances you didn't know you had to give."
Anger has made an imprint, in one way or another, on every Stone project, from Platoon, Wall Street and Born on the Fourth of July to JFK, Natural Born Killers and, now, Nixon. Stone himself sees its source as fear. "It has taken many forms in my life," he says. "I can get a stab of fear anytime. Sometimes you can handle it, sometimes you can't. I can get moody and defensive." Or, friends say, turn it on others. When he filmed her autobiography in Heaven & Earth, says writer Le Ly Hayslip, Stone could be a bully. "His energy is too strong," she says. "He knows he can make people respect and fear him."
Which may be why he received such a comeuppance in his wrenching divorce from Elizabeth Cox, whom he met when she served as an assistant on his 1981 thriller, The Hand. (Stone's six-year first marriage to Najwa Sarkis, 56, an attaché at the Moroccan mission to the U.N., ended in 1977. They had no children.) During the last few years of their marriage, Stone had numerous affairs, and, in an act of colossal hubris—one Richard Nixon would sympathize with—Stone kept graphic accounts of his extramarital relations in his diaries. Elizabeth found them.
Today Stone's sense of chastisement is clear. "You lose your kids—it is so sad," he says. "I only get a little portion of them now." Then a bit of his old sense of grievance creeps in. "American divorce laws are very tough," he says. "For whatever reason, the system is geared to destroy people." Still, he hopes to rebuild some trust with his ex. "We're trying to work out a friendship," he says.
It is one project among many. He is busy revising an autobiographical novel he wrote at 19. There is Memphis, a film he is developing about the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.—lest we think the new Oliver Stone will be moving on to romantic comedy. And there is Tara, named for the Buddhist deity of compassion. As Stone plays with the child, his face splits in a gap-toothed grin. "I've got a bond with her," he says. "There's a special relationship between a daughter and her father."
Tara's mother, whom Stone met at a New York City nightclub in 1994, says little about herself, except that "the baby makes me happy." Their pairing is, for Stone, uniquely honest. According to Jacqueline, her son has been frank with Chong. "He's said he will not marry her." His need for love, she says, "has been filled by Tara."
Stone would agree. "Love kills the demons," he says, standing, as Chong enters the room and reaches to take the child. But Stone pauses, bends over and kisses their baby girl—once, twice, three times—on the forehead. "I love these moments," he says. "I just don't have enough of them."
