Don’t really wanna be Elevator Buddies (Sephiroth x Reader)
A/N: Part 1 here. im suffering sufficiently at my current job that im leaving that i think i can write something because i need an outlet and i also want sephiroth to make it better. also, i am so much older than when i wrote the first part; as such, my writing probably reads a lot more different - better, worse or same is up to you. to those who have requested a part 2 and have waited literal years (its been 4!!!!!), i love you, i'm so sorry its so late.
★★★★★
Tumblr media
Staring at the message in your work inbox, you suddenly couldn’t summon the effort to care. Your mood instantly dropped and you needed to leave your desk. You kept your headset on as you wandered towards the small staff kitchen under the guise that you were still connected to a meeting and listening in, when really you just want to block people out. You didn’t want to be perceived.
You just wanted out.
ShinRa Inc wasn’t known as the best place to work, but the pay was good and it was better than any other options you had.
The coffee machine rumbled as you waited for it to process your order. You didn’t even want to drink the cheap, watered down stuff, you just didn’t want to be at your desk looking at that stupid fucking request. There wasn’t much that could get your out of these kinds of emotional troughs bar one thing that seemed to always work.
You felt the vibration of a notification from your phone in your pocket. Knowing what and who it was probably from, you eagerly checked the new message that had come through. It was just a photo of blue sky with some clouds—the tops of greenery you didn’t recognise lined the bottom. It was very abstract and out of context, but you were used to it now.
Putting aside your misery for the moment, you typed out a short response.
I can’t beat that. This is my view.
You took a photo of the ceiling above you. Stark, stale and claustrophobic in comparison to the natural sky you were given. You sent it off and only a few seconds later, received a thumbs up in response. It made you laugh.
Sephiroth was a terrible at texting sometimes, but it was endearing in way.
When you had first traded contact details a little after The Elevator Incident, it had taken a while before anything was sent from either of you. You were too scared of bothering him and he was more than likely too busy or just didn’t know what to send. It also felt like trading personal IDs was crossing into an entirely different friend territory that wasn’t as nonchalant as impromptu elevator conversations.
The messaging ice was broken when, one day, you got a single image of chocobo out in the wild with no context. If you didn’t have Sephiroth’s ID saved, you would have wondered if someone had messaged the wrong person. Your response was a quick ‘I love chocobos, they’re so cute!’, and your reward several hours later was a picture of a sweetly sleeping chocobo in a stable.
Sephiroth was a man of very few words, but he still found ways to communicate with you and that honestly made you feel… Well, you weren’t sure you wanted to admit what you were feeling too much. You knew you had feelings for the man, that you were attracted to him, but those feelings had no where to go. You couldn’t tell him.
For many reasons, you just couldn’t ever tell him about your ever growing affection for him.
You just couldn’t.
You wandered back to your desk, completely forgetting about the coffee you had made in the kitchen. The message from the 1st Class Soldier perked you up way more than the caffeine would have anyway. You scrolled through your requests again and sighed. It was probably going to be another late night in the office. Maybe you’d just call in sick tomorrow.
You worked a few more hours, eyeing your phone and hoping for more messages, but none came. Sephiroth was often the one to initiate conversation as you still felt like you would bother him if you sent something first. Still… You kind of really wanted to talk to someone—to him, specifically. Maybe it wouldn’t hurt to send one message?
Picking up your phone you opened up your chat and tried to think of something to say. You typed out several things, but kept deleting them. ‘Hello’ felt too formal, ‘Hi!’ seemed too chipper.
Is something wrong?
The message popped up before you could send something yourself.
!!! No! I was just about to message you. How are you?
There was a pause—and then a short voice message.
▶• ıll— “Are you sure you’re alright? Was there something else you wanted to say to me?”
You could hear the smile in his words and you flushed upon the realisation that he must have seen your stupid three dots pop up and disappear constantly in the chat. You playfully hissed your own voice note back,
▶• ıll— “Ohhh shut up, I just didn’t want to bother you!”
Putting your phone down, you peeked over your divider and looked around to see if anyone else could hear you. It was fairly late in the office, way past usual business hours, so you could see some screens still lit up around the  space, but there wasn’t anyone near you.
Your phone pinged a few times, indicating new messages. Some more photos, but this time of more a familiar sight—the Midgar cityscape.
I’m back.
It had been awhile since he had left on his last mission. You were glad he was back safe, not that you’d tell him that now. You sent off a quick, mildly motion blurred snap of your desk and sent it off.
?
A question mark? A question mark to what? The photo wasn’t that blurry.
It’s my desk.
Are you still working? It’s late.
Ohhhh… You cringed; it was late. Honestly if you didn’t procrastinate with absolute loathing and low morale earlier in the day you probably could have been home already, but you couldn’t push through the negativity.
Yeah, its been a rough day.
You waited for a response, but none came. Sephiroth went inactive spontaneously during your conversations, so it wasn’t surprising. Instead you put your phone down and continued on a project that was behind on its deadlines. Technically all of them were behind, but this one you at least had the energy to push through for now.
An hour later your phone pinged a couple times. A photo of the elevator you used everyday to get to up to your floor and:
Time to leave.
You stared at the message, biting your lip. Even if you wanted to leave, there was still things to be done and—
Do I have to drag you out?
▶• ıll— “Okay! Alright! I’m packing up, hold your damn chocobos. I’m leaving now.”
Who knew Sephiroth could be so pushy? During the long elevator ride down to the lobby, you wondered if maybe he only showed this side of himself to people he trusted or cared about. The thought made your stomach flip.
It could also have been that people never really gave Sephiroth the opportunity to be himself. It was an upsetting thought. He was the 1st Class Soldier, a warrior that couldn’t be toppled, a man way above the norm. Untouchable. Distant. You knew what his public image was like, but still somehow you couldn’t fathom how people couldn’t consider that there was another side to him.
The side of him that you always got to see.
The same Sephiroth that you saw was waiting for you as the elevator doors opened. You couldn’t help but smile at the sight. He stood by the empty reception desk with his arms crossed, looking out the front entrance. When he heard your footsteps he turned to face you almost immediately. The man’s expression would have seemed stoic to others, but you recognised the warmth in his mako-infused gaze.
What if you were the only person he looked at that way? You held your smile steady even as your heart argued with your head to accept that maybe that’s what you really wanted.
It felt like Sephiroth’s gaze only intensified as you approached him. “...You look awful.” His voice was low, quiet, but still teasing. There was a chuckle in there too, somewhere in his deep tone. Sure you had heard it recently in the voice message, but it wasn’t the same as hearing him speak to you in person.
“That’s so mean, Seph. Not even a proper greeting for me? Wow.” Even though you were exhausted, you automatically matched his manner. “You look…” Oh, you couldn’t tell him how you really felt about how he looked. There were so many adoring and affectionate words, yet somehow still not enough. “...Like you?” You finally sputtered out after filtering all the other things that your mouth wanted to say.
The 1st Class Soldier gifted you with a short laugh and you struggled to hold back the burst of emotions that bloomed in your chest. “You are so mean to me.” This interaction wasn’t like the others. This didn’t feel like the light playful chats in the elevator. When did these interactions change? When did all the same words that you used to use before suddenly mean something different?
Sephiroth suddenly leaned closer towards you, a small smirk crossing his lips. “I am nice to you.” The way he spoke was next to a purr, “Did you want me to be mean?” It felt like the mako glow in his eyes brightened for a moment; he was close enough that you could see specks of the otherworldly green in his irises.
You wanted to die on the spot. He was not flirting with you, no matter how much it felt like it. No way. However, before you could stop yourself, you replied quietly. “...I like it when you’re nice to me.” The look on Sephiroth’s face melted into something else—something just as warm, just as intense, but something so much more genuine and it immediately scared you. Before he could say anything more you let out dismissive laugh. “Phew, I am a lot more exhausted than I thought. I-I should probably get home.”
Maybe the fear was reflected in your expression. Sephiroth fell back into his usual cool and stoic demeanor and you wanted to apologise—it was hard not to feel as though you had just ruined something important. Casual conversation you could navigate. This? What was this?
Of course you’d find a way to make a bad day worse. Of course you’d ruin a good thing. Of course you’d—
A large hand pressed into your lower back and guided you forwards, interrupting your downward spiraling thoughts. When you looked up at Sephiroth beside you, he simply watched and waited for you to take the lead. Nothing in how he looked at you had changed from when you had first exited the elevator. “There’s a car waiting for you outside.” That voice you so adored, was steady and warm and sure. Still the same.
Quietly you stepped outside with Sephiroth in tow. He opened the car door for you, nodding to the driver who did the same in return. You sat in the back seat, with the soldier leaning outside on the vehicle, looking in to make sure you were comfortable.
“...Bye Seph.” You really did sound tired.
Sephiroth didn’t respond right away, but the silence wasn’t as heavy as the one inside the lobby. He placed a hand over his heart and bowed his head. “Goodnight.” You knew there was something else he wanted to say, but he held his tongue. There was another pause before he shut the door for you.
You leaned back in your seat and let the butterflies run rampant in your belly, let the buzz run through your veins, let it hum through your body. You covered your hands with your face. It felt like there was still something left to say, a conversation left unfinished.
From outside the ShinRa building, Sephiroth watched as you were driven away out of sight. He stood there, holding what he really wanted to say to you in his throat.
It was frustrating for him to know he could physically conquer any fight, any conflict, except for whatever he could see going on in your eyes. Did you know that he could see you becoming more and more tired with each interaction you had? It frustrated him to no end knowing that people took advantage of you and your time and your efforts. Idiots. Fools.
How could he put into words how you made him feel? Sephiroth was no good at words. He just wanted to keep you safe. He just wanted you not to be tired. He just wanted you to always smile when you saw him—a smile that said you were genuinely happy to see him. Not the 1st Class Soldier, but happy to see Sephiroth himself.
The man snapped out of his reverie as his phone pinged with a message. A voice note from you.
▶• ıll— “...I missed you, Sephiroth. Welcome home.”
Sephiroth stared at the screen of his phone.
And then he replayed the message, just to hear your voice again.

"They're going to - hic - k-kill me anyway so here-here goes." the person in the recording whispers
"Pullman - Pullman from the board -it was h-his idea. He-he does i-it in number s-" A thud. Some more rustling, a struggle. The recording cuts again.

Andrew pressed play once again, listening intently, both elbows on the desk in front of him. When he heard a step behind him, floorboards creaking, he froze.
Then, remembering where he was, he smiled to himself.
A moment later, Benjamin’s strong arms wrapped around him in a hug from behind. The scent of his cologne - the one he used for work - familiar and welcoming.
“Put your toys away, Andy. It is time for dinner.” Benjamin laughed, the deep, warm chuckle that always made Andrew’s heart swell. “I am serious about dinner, but how’s it going?”
“Listen to this.” Andrew pressed play again. “It is the same voice as before. Aoife’s team has managed to clean up a bit more of the tape.”
Benjamin stroked his clean-shaven chin thoughtfully. “It is awfully short.” He said doubtfully.
“I know, I know.” Andrew pulled a hand through his hair. “I have asked the network to look for a Pullman, no luck so far. It could be a code name, of course… right now, I’m just trying to figure out what those noises in the end are.
“Could I hear it again?”
Andy obliged, once again replaying the short burst of words and confusion.
”It could be anything!” The journalist shook his head, frustrated. “Is it an attack? Did someone come in and interrupt the recording? Did the person tip over the microphone?” Benjamin nodded.
“I have no idea. But.. what is he saying? He does it in numbers? He does it in number S- something?” Andrew shrugged.
“Your guess is as good as mine.”
The black man paced the room in thought, also gripped by the mystery. Then, his eye fell on a paper on the desk.
“Andy, what’s this?”
“It is yet another letter - a photocopy, that is. The original is with the police. This one was anonymously sent to the newspaper.”
The letter was hand-written, with the elegant curves of an older generation. Benjamin read out-loud:
“Well, if you had the chance to save a person you love, wouldn’t you take it? There has always been a market, organ donations are needed now more than ever. So how surprised can you really be that they took the opportunity to make a profit?! But I’ll give you this: This isn’t even the tip of the iceberg and you are wholly underprepared.”
Benjamin paused. “They know about the organs.” He mumbled.
“Indeed, they do.” Andrew rubbed his eyes. “Are they a buyer? Did they receive organs from WRU? Or do they work for the company? I don’t think we have a leak, yet. Not about the organ trade, anyway. This seems legit. But how to move forward? ‘Oh, what a tangled web we weave…’ The further I go, the more intertwined and messy everything seems.”
Benjamin stretched and then placed a gentle hand on Andrew’s shoulder.
“Come on, dinner first. We can look at this together tonight, if you want.”
“Okay.” Andrew smiled, standing up from his desk. “Thank you.” They exchanged a kiss, and walked down to the kitchen together.

"DRESSED SAFELY THESE WAR WORKERS LOSE NOTHING IN APPEARANCE," Toronto Star. February 16, 1943. Page 3. ---- 20,000 WARPLANT VERONICAS MUST CHANGE THEIR HAIR-DO ---- Too Many Imitators of Star Are Tangling Tresses in Machinery --- SHE'LL HELP, TOO --- By FREDERICK C. OTΗΜΑΝ Hollywood, Feb. 16 - (BUP) - The federal government cracked down on Veronica Lake today as a men- ace to the war effort. It claimed too many lady airplane workers, imitating her peek-a-boo bob, had scalped themselves in the machinery.
Miss Lake said okay. She said she was tired of looking at the world through one eye, anyway. and that henceforth she'd wear her hair on the top of her head.
The war manpower commission took up the problem of half blind war workers with the war production board, which wrote Paramount Pictures, Inc., which notified Miss Lake, who said:
"Any woman who wears her hair over one eye is silly. I never have worn it that way, myself, except in pictures. It made a good trade mark on the screen, but it was hard. mighty hard, to see where I was going."
The situation concerning 20,000 Veronica Lakes trying to operate turret lathes in war plants all over the nation first reached the desk of Mary Brewster White of the war manpower commission (woman- power division).
Driven Near Mad To Monroe Greenthal of the war production board she sent an inter- office memo: "Subject, Veronica Lake's hair."
"The working gal's indifference to the dangers of long flowing hair- do's has driven personnel directors to the last stages of profanity." wrote Miss White. "Veronica Lake has had a tremendous influence because of her unfettered mane upon too large a percentage of ladies engaged in turning out the ammunition."
Miss White added that she was delighted to note that Miss Lake's hair had gone up in her last movie. and said she believed the war manpower commission and the war production board should do everything possible to keep Lake's topknot on top. As she put it:
"The effect upon war production could be nothing less than electrify- ing if all the women suddenly dis- covered that there was something rather 'old hat about long-haired disorder. It would be swell to learn that Veronica, like all the other girls, is working harder and wants her beauty strictly streamlined. She might say long hair and one eye are all right for the home, but that two eyes and short hair are necessary on the job. Thanks, thanks, and thanks."
Had Nothing to Do With It Greenthal mailed this letter to Hollywood, with a note of his own in which he said he thought Miss White had something, all right, and how's to persuade Miss Lake to say the peek-a-boo bob is a thing of the past? This, he said, would save many a feminine stamp-press operator from losing her locks in the gears.
When this communication from Washington reached the studio, the publicists leaped to life and last were seen leading Miss Lake to the machine shop, to photograph her with her tresses tangled in the camshafts.
She said she didn't quite understand all the fuss. She said she had nothing to do with her one-eye hair-dress, anyhow.
"What happened was I was making my first movie test as a drunk," she said. "That hank of hair came down in front of my eye - and the head men insisted I leave it that way. I've been worrying with it, and stumbling through life, ever since. This request from the government isn't only a pleasure; it's a relief."
Everything all right now, war manpower commission?

28: Ground Rules
part one | previous | next | masterlist | ao3
Joseph Wilson is a bit of a ghost.
It’s not about the loss of his voice any more than everything is. It’s about being thirty-eight, he supposes, and having no full-time job besides art. It’s about being thirty-eight and unmarried, though with a large heap of good friends. Joseph Wilson wouldn’t—couldn’t trade his life for a normal white-fenced existence, but he can’t help feeling painfully different when his mother asked him “Are you ever going to settle down, honey?” with a sad look in her eyes.
She asks that every once in a while, and every time, Joseph gives her the same gentle look. He can’t answer that question. His heart has always compelled him in certain directions, gently and irresistibly and unchangeably. Joseph cannot negotiate with his heart. It compels him toward unknown beauties, the alien landscapes of the planet Tamaran, the depths of the jungle, the mediums of watercolor and poetry, the strange alienness of Raven, the lonely grace of Nightwing. The ever-expanding horizons of friendship.
His heart rarely compels him toward romance, and that always ends with Joseph being hurt. He stopped calling his refusal to get himself hurt cowardice a long time ago.
Along with the question, Adeline always offers to give him a position in her company, Searchers, Inc. She reminds Joseph how effective he could be as an agent, seeking out the information that Searchers sells. Or, Joseph suspects, as more of an all-around odd-jobs agent. A retrieval specialist, maybe. A diplomat, when the company requires diplomacy. Which is often.
He got a taste of the life of a Searchers agent last week. He had to go to Qurac and find his mother, gather information without getting caught, and get her out of a heavily guarded prison—with her on a broken leg! Joseph did it, and he did it well. But that life…
An overwhelming sense of orange occurs to Joseph Wilson’s senses, and the feeling of a bullet in his leg, and the sound of gunfire and shouts. He lets it wash over him and dissipate.
That life is not for Joseph.
What life is for him? A month ago, Joseph thought it was decided: the life of an artist. His life in Metropolis. An easel in the living room, canvases in the closet, a guitar by his bed, and leather and paper notebooks stacked on his desk and nightstand. Anxiety medication on his nightstand. Jericho uniform gathering dust on the top shelf of his closet. Medical pack for the vigilante friends who occasionally come to his door with wounds and illnesses. A calendar full of cultural events, art shows, part-time teaching, and get-togethers with his friends.
It was a good life. Joseph was content. Even with the occasional loneliness.
And then Wally West found him walking home from the general store, took one of his grocery bags, and fell into step with him. Joseph Wilson learned more about speedsters from that one breathless conversation than he had ever known before. Wally West was a whirlwind of explanations, the gist of which was “Barry Allen was the second flash; Barry has a grandson (Impulse); Impulse has a clone (Inertia); Inertia is a supervillain; well, actually, there have been multiple Inertias, and the first one wasn’t so bad; the first one just came back from the speed force and he doesn’t want to live with us and we’re worried but we’re trying to give him a chance; have you ever heard of a lightning rod? Okay, well… it’s kind of strange.”
Wally West explained the concept of a lightning rod—someone who gives a speedster the “grounding” to escape the speed force. He said their idea was to have Raven give Thad Thawne an artificial lightning rod. The hope was that the lightning rod person would be able to curb Thad’s powers if necessary. It wasn’t the strangest thing Joseph ever heard of by a long shot. But the idea of creating an artificial lightning rod seemed wrong.
Joseph understood that the plan was a desperate bid to rehome a supervillain, but something in him was shocked. If a lightning rod is so integral to a speedster’s heart… if it comes from mutual love and trust… what would it do to a person to have that void filled with magic? Joseph can’t imagine that the magic wouldn’t affect the child’s mind; Raven’s magic and emotion intertwine nearly inseparably. Would the lightning rod force him to trust Joseph? To love him?
Joseph hated that idea instantly.
But… the child Wally West described did seem to dearly need a new home. A young clone created to be a weapon, trying his best to figure life out but desperate to move away from his blood family. And Joseph has always had a soft spot for traumatized children.
Joseph Wilson has known of a few—a very few—reformed villains. He knows it’s an awful, difficult process to rebuild your life. He knows, too, that blood family is complicated and hard and sometimes it’s better to be away for a while.
He learned more over the phone with Max Mercury; he learned the boy’s name, Sophos Thaddeus Anacletus Free; he learned that he definitely has PTSD, dissociation, and nonverbal episodes; and he learned that Max loves him very, very much. Max didn’t say so, but it was there in his voice. It was obvious in the way he asked Joseph, softly, to be honest. He asked him if he would seriously consider taking Thad in. Max didn’t want to give the boy false hope.
Joseph said yes.
Of course he said yes.
It seemed like fate at the time. Joseph Wilson, living alone with a house full of art and a mind full of knowledge about trauma and recovery, having a child fall into his lap. It felt like being needed and perfectly able to provide. Like the possibility of doing what was not done for him when his throat was cut. Healing the hurt.
He loves his mother, but all she knew how to give him was protection. Training. She never knew how to give him comfort.
Then Joseph met Thad Free, and the boy walked with him and talked to him in his rusty little voice, and Joseph fell in love with him then and there. His heart ached. He was never so sure about the compulsion in his life. He saw the stiff, over-careful way Thad moved transform into sure-footed, childish delight. He saw the hope in his yellow eyes, and he wanted to give that to Thad forever.
And then his mother vanished on a Searchers mission, and Joseph had to find her, and on the airplane ride home, she dropped the bomb on him:
“I want to give Searchers, Inc. to you.”
Joseph froze.
“I won’t ask you to be an agent,” Adeline Kane said. There were bags under her eyes, her white roots were showing, and her leg was in a cast. “I know by now you don’t want that. I think I know my own son. But… Joseph, I can’t keep up with the company anymore, and not just missions. Your mother’s getting old, honey.”
Joseph signed, “You’re retiring?”
Expressions are always exaggerated in ASL because that’s one of the ways to indicate meaning, including framing a sentence as a question, but Joseph’s disbelief must have shown really clearly. Adeline smiled at him knowingly.
“Sooner or later,” she said. “I hope sooner. Depending on if you agree to take over Searchers. If not… if not, I’m going to have to find someone else I can trust. And there’s no one in Searchers.”
“No one?”
“No one. Hazard of being a… well, frankly, a shady, barely-legal, and downright deceptive company. I’m glad you never joined, Joey, you’re too good to be part of it.”
Joseph signed, quick and almost angry, “Then why ask me to take the whole company?”
“Because I trust you,” Adeline said. “Because whatever you decide to do with it, it will be good. Change the company to be more legal, or more impactful and positive? Wonderful. Burn it to the ground? Fine!”
“Mother,” Joseph signed, horrified.
Adeline shifted uncomfortably in the airplane seat, reached out her hand, and took Joey’s cheek in her hand.
“Joey,” she said tenderly. “You can say no, and I’ll never ask again. But, darling, I know you could use Searchers well.”
Joseph turned his head into her hand and closed his eyes, throat closing up with emotion.
He ended up telling her that he’d have to think about it. She said Searchers could keep running for a while without her, but he should make his decision before her leg healed.
“Otherwise I’ll just end up taking over again,” she laughed, and Joseph laughed, too, in his own silent way.
As they disembarked, his mother said bluntly: “I need help around the mansion. While my leg heals. Would you be willing to come? I’m sorry, I really don’t want to put responsibility on you, but I’m a wanted woman, and—”
“Give me two weeks,” Joseph signed.
When his heart compels him, he rarely denies it.
The next day, Max Mercury called him. Thad Free! He has a commitment! But he told his mother he would move in with her! Joseph was furious with himself for forgetting. He gave Max a day and a length of time for Thad to visit: nearly a week. It’s a long time. It’s not nearly long enough.
Thad Free stands in the middle of Joe Wilson’s apartment like a polite ghost. He waits, solemn-eyed and wary, as if for Joseph to react to his presence. He looks like he expects Joseph to recoil from him in disgust.
He’s a pale creature, lighter blond than Joseph himself. The light from the picture window makes every hair of his body shimmer like thin strands of gold. In his whitish-blue sweater, he seems out of place among the rich greens and pinks of Joseph Wilson’s apartment. Like a white pigeon.
Thad Free reminds Joseph of Raven, back when she was new with the Teen Titans. When she feared her powers as much as she valued them. Thad Free moves like Raven: light-footed, like he’s trying not to take up any more attention than his existence demands. Tension rides in his shoulders. He watches Joseph like he’s afraid one of them is going to get hurt if he looks away.
Joseph gives Thad a quick tour of the apartment first, trying to coax him to move a little easier. It’s only three rooms, counting the bathroom; the kitchen and living room are one area, and the bedroom is one area. Joseph smiles ruefully as he acknowledges that the apartment is pretty small. Thad smiles back and shrugs.
Joseph signs apologetically, “There’s only one bed, sorry. Can you sleep on a futon?”
Thad looks surprised to be asked.
“That’s fine. I don’t sleep well in beds anyway. Normally I sleep on the floor.”
Joseph widens his eyes. Thad laughs softly.
“It’s more normal than how I used to sleep,” he says.
Joseph cocks his head, curious.
Thad lets his canine teeth show in something like a grin as he says “Suspended upside down in a tank of purple liquid, all chained up in the VR equipment.”
It’s heartbreaking. It’s weird. Joseph balks, torn between the impulse to reach out and the impulse to laugh. Thad grins knowingly at him and sticks his hands in the pockets of his pale-blue sweater. Joseph laughs, and Thad looks pleased with himself.
Joseph takes Thad out to the living room and sits down on the couch. Thad sits on the opposite side of the couch, tucking his feet under him. He seems seconds away from taking flight.
Joey signs, “Let’s set some ground rules.”
“Oh thank God,” the boy blurts out, and then looks away, blushing.
Aww.
Joseph waits until Thad Free looks back. Then he signs, “One rule: look at me while we’re talking.”
“Oh,” Thad says, and Joseph watches the realization hit him: looking away removes Joseph’s ability to communicate. “Oh, I’m sorry.”
Joseph brushes his fingers along his palm twice: “I forgive you.”
Thad nods and settles down a bit, moving his legs so he’s less crouching, more kneeling. He looks more comfortable this way.
Joseph signs, “Don’t break things or make loud noises.”
“I wouldn’t,” Thad protests, offended.
Joseph gives him an apologetic look and shrug.
“I don’t have many rules for you,” he signs. “You’re my guest. I’ll tell you more if I need to.”
“Okay,” Thad says slowly.
“It’s not a test,” Joseph signs. “I just can’t think of any more rules right now.”
“Okay,” Thad says again, steadier.
Joseph signs, “You?”
Thad looks alarmed.
“Me what?”
“Do you have any ground rules?” Joseph asks.
Thad looks confused.
“Things you want me to know?” Joseph prompts. “Things I shouldn’t do or talk about?”
Thad’s body glitches. It’s as if Thad moved while Joseph was blinking, only Joseph didn’t blink. Joseph is just realizing that Thad must have slowed time when the boy says decisively: “Yes.”
Joseph puts his hands in his lap and leans forward, listening.
“Don’t touch me without asking.”
Joseph nods. He knows that one, but it’s always good to hear again.
“And try not to come up behind me with no warning.”
Joseph nods. He lifts his hands and signs, “Coming up behind me is bad for me, too.”
Thad nods back. He takes a deep breath.
“Sometimes I dissociate. Do you know what that is?”
Yes. Yes, Joseph does.
“Don’t touch me while I’m not conscious, please,” Thad says. “And don’t… don’t…”
Thad’s gaze falls to Joseph’s hands.
“Don’t make a big deal out of it?” the boy requests. “It just happens.”
Joseph signs “OK.”
“And don’t talk about clone stuff, please.”
Joseph asks, “What clone stuff?”
He has to fingerspell “clone”; there’s no ASL sign for it. Thad grimaces.
“Don’t talk about Bart. My genetic original. And don’t… I guess just don’t ask me about being a clone. You can ask stuff about my past and I’ll answer. It’s fine. But not about that. Not about him.”
Thad’s voice is husky.
Joseph puts his hand on his heart and inclines his head, giving Thad a sympathetic look. The boy can’t hold eye contact; he looks away out the window, then remembers and looks back at Joseph, flustered.
And then he looks away again. His shoulders hunch.
“Sorry, I just—sorry. I’m not good at this.”
He stops. He looks at Joseph’s hands again.
“Uhh… so, sometimes I get overwhelmed, and I have to go be alone… I’m not trying to be rude, I just… I can’t do it. I’ve rarely ever had to interact with real people before. I’m sorry.”
Joseph signs, “It’s OK. Truly.”
Thad looks down at Joseph’s hands, shamefaced.
“Raven gets overwhelmed too,” Joseph signs. Then he remembers that Thad doesn’t know Raven’s ASL name, so he fingerspells it: “R-A-V-E-N. And Raven is one of my best friends.”
Thad signs “OK.”
Is he going nonverbal? It seems like this got into some heavy territory for him.
“Do you have all the ground rules you want?” Joseph asks. “You can add more later.”
Thad nods. He looks up at Joseph again.
Joseph smiles at him. “If you want to be alone for a while, you can hang out in the bedroom. I thought I’d do some painting this afternoon. I’ll be out here. We can order dinner at seven in the evening. Does that sound all right to you?”
“Yes,” Thad says quietly—but sincerely. “Yes, that sounds good.”
Joseph nods. He gets up, slowly, and stretches, arms up in the air. Out of the corner of his eye, he can see Thad hop off the couch with the light grace of a dancer.
“Joseph?” Thad’s voice asks.
Joseph puts his hands down and gives Thad his full attention.
Thad says, “Thank you. For the ground rules.”
Aww. Joseph remembers the way Thad relaxed when Joseph assured him that the moss he stepped on would grow back, and something clicks. Thad was raised in isolation from human contact, and probably punished for every wrong move. He’s terrified of doing something wrong.
“You’re welcome,” Joseph signs. It’s the same sign for “Thank you,” and he hopes Thad takes it both ways.
Thad nods seriously and asks to be excused.

Wall Street Hedge Funds are Missing Out On This Stock.
Hello, my name is Jiayi Chen from Tradebase, and today I will be explaining one of my top stocks; Shopify Inc (NYSE: SHOP), and why it has the potential to outperform the market in 2024 significantly.
March 24 Weekly Rankings
1. Shopify 2. Nice Ltd 3. Eld Beauty 4. Advanced Micro Devices 5. EQT Corp 6. PayPal 7. Amplify Energy Corp 8. Microsoft 9. Tesla 10. The Trade Desk
Shopify Inc (NYSE: SHOP)
Shopify is the world’s leading platform offering an e-commerce platform that helps businesses easily sell products and services. Shopify has long been admired for the simplicity and straightforwardness with which merchants can set up storefronts on its platform. In recent years, it’s invested in and improved every conceivable merchant need, from providing point-of-sale software and hardware to extending its back office software to include cross-border sales tax compliance.
So, what makes Shopify especially compelling at this moment? I believe the company is currently leveraging significant scale advantages, driven by its technological superiority over competitors and its burgeoning brand influence. As highlighted by Tom Gardener during The Motley Fool’s recommendation unveiling, founder and CEO Tobi Lütke remains fundamentally focused on enhancing the functionality of the Shopify platform.
This meticulous attention to detail is yielding tangible outcomes. For instance, Shopify’s proprietary shopping cart payment technology, Shop Pay, demonstrates notably higher conversion rates compared to rival solutions — averaging at least 15% higher in completed transactions. Even Shopify president Harley Finkelstein states: “Our data also indicates that the mere presence of Shop Pay, even if unused by the buyer, results in a 5% increase in conversion, with usage potentially boosting conversion rates by up to 50% compared to guest checkout, surpassing all other accelerated checkout options by at least 10%. These trends are reflected in our performance.”
Furthermore, notable product enhancements such as “Hydrogen,” a robust programming environment tailored for large enterprises, enable intricate customization of storefronts. Despite this, Shopify has been consistently updating its program and maintaining its community; furthermore helping customers with their needs.
The convergence of product focus, brand resilience, and high-profile clientele has propelled Shopify to achieve consistent double-digit growth. In its most recent quarter, the company witnessed a 30% surge in revenue (adjusted for the divestiture of its logistics arm).
Another key aspect of why I think high of Shopify is its brand recognition and social media dominance. For example, Shopify has been blowing up on the internet, fueled and helped by Dropshipping or E-Commerce gurus that teach the art of online sales on social media platforms. Shopify is widely acknowledged and known as the best platform to sell online; what we like is it’s natural, unfiltered, organic brand development and reviews, in which the popularity of the brand spreads through the word of mouth from a person rather than from digital advertisements.
Of particular interest to long-term investors, Shopify attained a free cash flow margin of 21% in the last quarter, indicating its ability to convert a significant portion of sales revenue into free cash flow. We anticipate further improvement in this margin as Shopify continues to expand its gross merchandise volume (GMV) and net revenue. Already, Shopify is displaying signs of emerging as a cash-generating powerhouse, with free cash flow reaching $905 million over the past 12 months.
Investors must be ready to withstand short-term fluctuations in these stocks. Presently, Shopify’s valuation stands at 77 times the forward one-year earnings, which may appear steep initially. However, this valuation becomes more reasonable when factoring in consensus analyst forecasts indicating the company’s net earnings are expected to more than double from 2024 to 2026.
The transitional phases for companies, shifting from break-even to high-profit states, often pose challenges for investors as they weigh the importance of revenue growth versus profitability in their valuation assessments. I am confident that Shopify is poised to significantly increase its worth over the next five years and beyond.

Bitcoin Mining Company CleanSpark to Launch In-House Trading Desk
Tumblr media
Bitcoin mining company CleanSpark Inc. is reportedly planning to establish an in-house trading desk in 2024 to maximize the returns from its Bitcoin holdings. The company's CEO, Zachary Bradford, believes that it makes financial sense to handle the trading internally, especially considering the large Bitcoin balance the company currently possesses. CleanSpark held 2,575 BTC at the end of November, worth around $116 million. The company intends to develop strategies based on regulated crypto offerings, such as option contracts traded on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.
Bradford suggests that more Bitcoin miners will follow suit and set up their own in-house trading desks. CleanSpark's share price has experienced significant gains, increasing approximately 440% in 2023 and reaching a market cap of $2 billion. This growth has reversed the nearly 80% share price drop that occurred in 2022, when the cryptocurrency market suffered a major decline. The establishment of an in-house trading desk demonstrates CleanSpark's commitment to maximizing its Bitcoin holdings and capitalizing on market opportunities.

Trade Desk Inc. TTD stock price defended $75 support and recovered 11% in a short period of time. If it formed a bullish continuation pattern buyers seem to be returning back to track.  Trade Desk stock price managed to climb above the 50-day EMA showcasing that the trend is in an upward direction. The buyers seem more active as compared to sellers so more upward momentum is possible.  In mid-September, TTD stock price attempted to break out of the $87.00 hurdle. But the attempt failed and the price faced sharp rejection. Later, slow and steady price declined and displayed minor profit booking.  Luckily, the buyers are active near the $75.00 level which acted as support and the price showed a bounce. The price pattern of the stock is bullish and bulls’ dominance is visible.  The recent upmove looks reliable and sustainable so more upside is possible. However, the trading volume is quite low but the price is rising upward. So, it might be an indication of a bullish trap. Therefore, investors must be careful before creating any bullish positions.  Will the Uptrend in TTD Stock Price Continue? TTD stock price is recovering by taking support near the swing low. It recovered the majority of its previous losses and the positive momentum is intact.  Till the Trade Desk stock price sustains above the $70.00 support, the stock will remain inside the bulls’ grip and the uptrend may continue. On the higher side, $87.00 will act as an immediate hurdle for the bulls.  If the buyers succeed in breaking the $87 hurdle, then the price may rally to the 52-week high. The technical analysis suggests that the TTD stock price is in bulls’ grip and it may hit new highs by December end. Trade Desk Stock Price Analysis Trade Desk stock price forms a bullish pattern on daily, weekly, and monthly time frames. However, the broader market indices are mildly bearish so it might negatively impact the TTD shares for a short period of time. The RSI at 57 sloping upward showcases the strength and the confidence of investors. It shows buyers’ are active and bullish momentum might continue in the current month.  The MACD curve displayed a positive crossover indicating bullishness and fueling a further rally in the stock.  Conclusion Trade Desk Inc. TTD stock price reversed upward and formed a bullish continuation pattern. The recent up move looks reliable and more upward momentum is possible.  The analysis suggests Trade Desk stock price is in bulls’ grip and preparing to hit the 52-week high. Technical Levels Resistance Levels: $87.65 and $91.98 Support Levels: $75.50 and $69.85
