I drive past Toxteth Park Cemetery often and made a decision a while ago to take photos when I had a camera loaded with black and white film.

When I finally got round to it my camera of choice was the Lomography Fisheye 2. Therefore the shots where a little quirky rather than somber, gothic and moody. I might revisit with a more conventional camera at a later date.

So this is the penultimate selection of Sketches for Britain book one- After the bar brawl and Billy making it home drunk there was some more story line noted down which didn’t get drawn out till sketchbook 15 but suffice to say, it wasn’t a happy ending and the violence spiralled a little out of control with the antagonist (who was not fully planned out but possibly called Dirty Bird or just ACAB), had found out Billy’s address and decided to avenge his humiliation in a stepping up of the hostility by pouring lighter fuel through the letterbox and starting a fire. In the fire, although the people get out, his bulldog Rudi (Soft Lad) is killed which breaks his heart. He then reveals how the police officer attending already knew his name without asking and confesses that he was ex police himself and it becomes clear why his wife had left him after the night ten years earlier at the Rialto. On this day, 4 July 1981 was the heaviest night of rioting in Toxteth, Liverpool, which began when police tried to arrest a young Black man, who was subsequently rescued by a crowd. Both white and Black people had then begun to fight back against the police. Martin Kettle and Lucy Hodges described what happened in their book, Uprising!: "Rioters commandeered milk floats, a stolen fire engine and a cement mixer and drove them straight into police lines. They were armed with every conceivable weapon, including lengths of scaffolding which they thrust at the riot shields like medieval knights... At one point they managed to seize a fire hose which the police had been using on them and turn it on the officers. Faced with this attack, the police had no alternative but to retreat, leaving behind them a no-go area open to a crowd of jubilant looters". Several buildings were burned down, including a bank and a private members' club, and there was widespread looting. The Guardian newspaper reported that middle-aged women, white and Black queued up with shopping trolleys to expropriate goods from supermarkets. Police resorted to the use of CS gas for the first time in mainland Britain, firing door-piercing rounds at protesters, which seriously injured at least two people.
