A)What do you think of the possibility of ned/ashara love given they're described as looking similar to jon/dany & we know these two will hookup, even though sansa will be his great love. Why do you think ned reacted so strongly to cat when she mentioned her name?? Also it's possible that ned never knew that ashara was pregnant as he only meets her at the end of the war. And J/sansa would be like ned/cat. I see similarities b/w A/N/C love triangle with dany/j/sansa. I think N/A were definitely a thing. I don't think anything happened b/w A & Brandon. I suppose I already right off the bat disagree with a number of assumptions going into this ask, so I'll do that and explain how this informs my own guesses of that backstory. :)

We don't actually have any evidence that Ned even had a crush on Ashara, let alone slept with her. We know that they danced together after Brandon asked Ashara because Ned was "too shy to leave his bench", not "too shy to ask his crush" to dance. We know the rumors about them started because he returned the sword to Starfall after killing her brother. If Ned had had a crush on Ashara let alone slept with her, you'd think Robert would mention that to him before he brings up some peasant woman named Wylla? Ned literally never thinks about her EVER. The only one spreading that information as fact is a twelve-year-old nephew who never met her and is also spreading blatantly false information about Jon's mother being Wylla. Hmm.

We do not know that Jon and Dany are going to hook up. The fact that the show went that route makes it show canon, not book canon, and we know they were willing to be Very Flexible with shifting storylines around.

Ashara has a vague resemblance with Dany through the purple eyes, but her hair is actually dark, unlike that of her nephew Edric Dayne. The visual you get with her and Brandon might as well be reminiscent of Brandon and dark-haired Barbrey, you know? Less so of Jon and Dany.

Ashara was not the paramour of Lewyn Martell. That one is described as "an old woman now", so her identity is known and she is officially alive. But even that would be more credible than shy and honorable Eddard Stark having premarital sex with a highborn lady at a tourney, no matter how willing. That whole assumption is so out of character for him! We know people think it's hilariously unlikely that he fathered a bastard, and the only reason they believe it is because, well, there's a bastard that looks like him. Remove that "proof" and you have an Eddard who is exactly what is says on the tin: shy and honorable. Know who's described as "never shy about taking what he wanted"? Brandon. In the context of sleeping with a highborn maiden. Maybe it doesn't have to be as complicated as you're making it. Maybe it's as simple as Barristan thinking "Stark" dishonored Ashara and it's the one who has a history of doing exactly that.

If Ashara and Ned had parallels to Jon and Ygritte, Ashara would have forced herself on Ned and he'd have been filled with self-blame and shame. There is no "teenage puppy love", there's an abusive relationship. Which would STILL make more sense than Ned willingly having premarital sex with a highborn girl. There is no Ashara/Ned/Catelyn triangle. The whole point and irony is that the woman Ned "loved fiercely" is his sister, Jon's mother.

Not going into that bit about Rhaegar because that makes absolutely zero sense. If you think some Lord's heir assaulted your wife's lady in waiting, you don't solve that by shaming your wife and that guy's sister in a huge public scandal. Especially with fragile politics in the background.

Because Catelyn is inquiring in the direction of the origins of Jon Snow, and Ned is panicking. If he had had a relationship with Ashara, nothing would be easier or smarter than opening up about it to Catelyn in this moment. She is clearly trying to forge a connection there, to find common ground and ease the tension between them. Instead, Ned shuts it down harshly, demands her sources and then shuts those down, too. That's not the actions of a man grieving his lost love with the wife he clearly already cares for. This is a man having a knee-jerk panic-driven reaction to make sure he never has to answer any questions in this direction that might lead to revealing his secret or getting caught in contradictions. Because, you know, Lyanna. Being the mother of his fake bastard. The whole point.

I do agree with that, at least!

Basically, no, I just think it's incredibly unlikely that Ned ever slept with Ashara, and questionable if he ever had a crush on her. Brandon sleeping with a highborn maiden at a tourney is far more likely, because he has a history of doing that. If a Stark is the father of Ashara's child, it's going to be Brandon. Which is something Ned may never have even found out about. A secret he is likely privy to is Ashara's involvement in the baby switch and her caring for Aegon. Why else would the Dayne's be covering for Ned when it comes to Jon Snow's parentage, unless they are tied together in secrecy?

Trying to turn that into evidence that Jon and Dany are going to be a thing, let alone a "puppy love" thing, or that there will be a love triangle of some kind is a bit of a stretch.

If rhaegar wasn’t married (say Steffon Baratheon had a daughter/there was a Targaryen girl he was betrothed to but wasn’t old enough for marriage yet) would that have made it less shocking at harrenhal that he chose lyanna over his pregnant wife and mother of his child? Or would it be worse

There’s already a canonical answer to that.

Aegon V’s son, Prince Duncan, was betrothed to an unnamed daughter of Lord Lyonel Baratheon, the Laughing Storm. However, Duncan fell in love (somewhere in the Riverlands, not coincidentally) with a common-born girl named Jenny of Oldstones and either broke off his engagement before marrying her, or secretly married her and then broke off his engagement (TWOIAF is not clear on this point).

Either way, we have a broken engagement with a Baratheon daughter and a secret elopement by a Targaryen prince. Lord Baratheon was, understandably, angry about this, especially since Prince Duncan was heir to the throne. It was ultimately decided that he would forfeit his status and his claim in order to marry (or to stay married to) Jenny, and that his youngest sister Rhaelle would marry Lord Baratheon’s heir, presumably as partial recompense for not getting a grandson on the Iron Throne.

However, this was not accomplished before Lord Lyonel ended up fighting Ser Duncan the Tall, Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, in single combat, and losing. So we don’t know what would have happened otherwise, and it’s hinted that there may have been the chance of a rebellion over that broken engagement.

So, long story short, if Rhaegar had been betrothed (doesn’t really matter to whom) but not married, his choice to crown Lyanna would have been...rude? Maybe not even that, depending on how he framed it and contextualized it.

It’s worth remembering that part of the reason that incident is so memorable isn’t because of what happened at Harrenhal, but because of what happened afterward. If Aerys had fallen down the stairs as soon as they got back to King’s Landing and Rhaegar became king, who’s to say what might have happened? It’s worth remembering that Robert’s Rebellion didn’t start because of the Harrenhal tourney; it started because Aerys committed judicial murder and started accusing all his lords of treason.

Actually I think Jon coming to King’s Landing could have been incredible. For various reasons but like. He’d go to the Tourney of the Hand and watch Loras give Sansa a rose and at first he’d be like. Literally whatever. The Hand’s daughter got flowers at the Tourney of the Hand fork spotted in kitchen. But then all his brain alarms would go “!!!! Some southern fucker just gave flowers to a Stark girl at a tourney!!!! I have a working understanding of geopolitics of the last 20 years!!!” And he would Have to go wreck Loras’s shit in the training yard (since obviously Dad Isn’t Allowed To) and they would beat the crap out of each other and Jon would absolutely hiss and snarl at Renly too if he got mad enough and anyways that’s how Jon becomes like attached to Renly and Loras, like they are one shouting match away from becoming a toxic gay throuple of outsider youngest sons, and Ned is watching this sweating bullets waiting for either the Targ-Baratheon Grudge Genes or the Stark-Baratheon Attraction Genes to win out. Arya is highly dubious of everything going on and Sansa just wants people to stop kicking the shit out of each other so she can go back to not paying attention. Renly is trying to figure out whether letting his possible new boyfriend’s?? dad get fucked over by his sister in law is like. going to play well or not.

what if. at the tourney of harrenhal, Jon was conceived when lyanna and rhaegar have sex after the whole knight of the laughing tree thing. it’s a spur of the moment burst of passion. afterwards she finds out she’s pregnant. she freaks out, figures she’s gonna start showing soon. she contacts rhaegar freaking out bc she’s betrothed to robert and he would kill her if he found out that she had sex with someone else. (esp if it’s rhaegar bc he already embarassed robert at harrenhal when he named lyanna the queen of love and beauty the morning after they had sex.) rhaegar says ok cool then come with my friends and you can lie low with me. except he’s married so he can’t go home exactly, and he sends her to the secret apartment he has. only now his wife and dad are having drama so he just has to deal with this real quick, but he’ll be back soon he swears. they can talk about the baby and his wife and his two existing kids then. when he gets back. only he never actually comes back

Yeah the Rhaegar stans are something else and some of them claim to be Jon stans and think that every Jon stan must also like Rhaegar because he was Jon's sperm donor. I like Jon, that does not mean I have to like Rhaegar. Jaime is my favorite character and that does not mean I have to like the evil sociopath that is Tywin just because he is Jaime's father lmao. They are so ridiculous.

I've never seen a single argument that actually explains what about Rhaegar is positive enough that it would negate all the things Jon would despise about him. Jon is a man with a strong moral compass and no ego, but Rhaegar had a loose moral compass and literally had an ego so large he let it start a war. And those things I like about Jon are why I hate Rhaegar. They are complete opposites of what they stand for as men and I have no obligation to like one Targaryean just beacuse he helped create Jon. People like that are only Jon stans as long as they can mould Jon into the secret dragon savior when Jon is a wolf through and through. He is the character that is the true Northerner, and these people only stan Jon as long as they can pretend he will suddenly do a 180 and turn into Rhaegar when finding out the truth.

Liking one character doesn't mean I am obligated to like another and it's almost like gatekeeping to argue otherwise. I like Young Griff, and shock and awe I still don't like Rhaegar.

He sucks, he's gross, he's a big dumb loser who died like the failure he always was meant to be.
