Thank you Toriyama Akira sensei, db will go down as one of the biggest inspirations for anime and art. 6 year old me always looked forward to watching 20 minutes of screaming power up sessions after school every week. Now year old me still does too 🐉 🟠
There's really no two ways about it, Sunrise (+ Anima & Kamikaze Douga) absolutely nailed Akira Toriyama's world with this first episode. Equally impressive though is their insane 3D work.
I'm a big fan of Sand Land so I don't have much to add from a narrative perspective, but the CGI work on this series is actually incredible. Of course, this is an episodic version of the movie, so it's going to have quality that knocks your socks off, but this is the sort of work that gives Orange a run for its money.
Between this trio, Toei, and Orange, the future of CGI anime has never looked brighter. It's incredible work, impressive awareness, and peerless talent on display.
Because of that though, it just highlights the hack work that the rest of the industry has been doing. These studios have a near perfect understanding of what you can and can't do with 3D anime, and they have the experience and ability to deliver on what they *can* do. It's a massive difference to CGI being used to cut corners or cost on the majority of series, and it absolutely shows.
Hopefully studios learn from this incredible work and begin to pivot, but until then I'll be happily enjoying the seven episodes of Sand Land that are out currently (and periodically sharing my thoughts on them).
So sad to hear of Akira Toriyama’s passing. He was an incredible artist who inspired millions, myself included. I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that without his influence, I wouldn’t be an artist. I remember catching episodes of Dragonball Z on Toonami as a kid, and while I never got the whole story as the channel played any episode they felt like in any order, I was enamoured by the art, character designs and animation. Being a fan of video games too, I saw his designs in games like Dragon Quest and Chrono Trigger. I remember drawing Goku over and over again as a kid, before slowly making my own characters in the style of Dragonball. I cannot thank this man enough, for helping me become the artist I am today, and I hope to become even a fraction as good as he some day.
A bit late and I wasn't even sure if I can make a tribute art for Akira Toriyama, but here's a quick sketch.
My taste in men started when I chose Vegeta over Goku :)))
For this tribute art, I wasn't sure if I'd copy Toriyama-sensei's art style like how I used to draw DBZ fanart in grade school, or go with my own. ^^;
My introduction to Dragon Ball was through my cousins, but my memories of that are vague, and it wasn't until I was in grade school where one of the more mainstream local channels started airing Dragon Ball in Filipino dub that I got into it, and it was then that I understood why my cousins are so into it. I also remember watching a DBZ movie (tho I don't remember which movie was it because I was still not very familiar with Dragon Ball at that time) with my aunt, cousin, and a family friend's son in a theater. DBZ was a big hit in the country that not only it attracted male fans, but also female fans thanks to the likes of Vegeta and Trunks, haha! In grade school, I remember having friends debating on who the best DBZ guy is between Vegeta and Trunks, and also discuss about what happened in the last episode. It made us go home early to catch it on TV and look forward to school the next day to talk about it. This was a time before mobile phones and social media. I also used to make fanmade DBZ comic strips (like what I still do now haha!) on the back of my notebook or on a piece of paper, then share it to my friends. Fast forward to high school when I managed to get a copy of Chrono Trigger. When I found out that it was the same person who made Dragon Ball and the characters for Chrono Trigger, I was in awe. I never thought that a comic creator can also be an artist for a game. I went, "Damn I wanna be like that, too. Make comics and characters for games! I wanna be just like Akira Toriyama!" And that's how Akira Toriyama has inspired me. I took art seriously and took it as a degree along with game development. Now here I am, making my own comics, and have made character and mecha designs for games.
It is undeniable that Toriyama-sensei is a huge influence for creatives.
Thank you very much for your work, and for being an inspiration to many!
Rest in Peace to beloved creator, Akira Toriyama. I just got the news several minutes ago, and I instantly fell into grief. I love this man so much, and all he has done. I may have criticized his work now and then, but it never took away from how much I looked up to him and cared about him.
Dragonball changed my life.
One of my favorite game series, Dragon Quest Monsters, changed my life.
The way he singlehandedly set so much of the ground work for the Shounen world, inspiring many other creators and paving the way for what we have today is unmatched. Now and for many decades, his works will continue to inspire people and change lives. The speeches he has given, thoughts and ideas he's shared, and words of encouragement he's given to so many will stay with me and many others til the end of our lives.
More than anything, I really hope that in his final moments he knew how loved he was by all of us. He fully knew the kind of impact he had, and that hundreds of millions would be grieving for him. Rest in Peace, Akira Toriyama. Wherever you go, may you continue to find happiness.
What can be said about one of the greatest and most influential figures in anime and manga?

“The future of the planet is in your hands, may you fight with honor.”
When it comes to one’s personal journey through the world of anime and manga, every story is different. But, for many of my generation, those stories have a very similar start. It’s something like this; huddled in front of a slightly too-small CRT every weekday afternoon, you are transported to craggy…
