Stay Gold by Tobly McSmith
Tumblr media
Debut author Tobly McSmith delivers a coming-of-age teen love story about a transgender boy who’s going stealth at his new Texas high school and a cisgender girl who is drawn to him, even as she’s counting down the days until graduation. Perfect for fans of David Levithan, Becky Albertalli, and Jenny Han.
Pony plans to fly under the radar this year. Tired of getting too much attention at his old school after coming out as transgender, he’s hoping for a fresh start as a Hillcrest High senior. But it’s hard to live your best life with the threat of exposure lurking around every corner.
Georgia is beginning to think there’s more to life than cheerleading. She just wants to keep a low profile until graduation . . . which is why she promised herself that dating is a nonstarter for the foreseeable future.
Then, on the very first day of classes, the new guy and the cheerleader lock eyes…
In this moving, honest debut from Tobly McSmith, one transformative relationship opens the eyes of a whole town—and opens the door for Pony and Georgia to celebrate their truths, even when it feels hard.

A trans teen walks the fine line between doing whatever it takes for his acting dream and staying true to himself in this moving, thought-provoking YA novel from the acclaimed author of  Stay Gold . Aspiring actor August Greene just landed a coveted spot at the prestigious School of Performing Arts in New York. There’s only one problem. His conservative parents won’t accept that he’s transgender. And to stay with his aunt in the city, August must promise them he won’t transition. August is convinced he can play the part his parents want while acting cool and confident in the company of his talented new friends. But who is August when the lights go down? And where will he turn when the roles start hitting a little too close to home?
Mod opinion: I haven't heard of this book before and it doesn't seem like a genre I'm particularly interested in.

"Forget whiskers on kittens, correct pronouns are a few of my favorite things. It's like hearing your name pronounced wrong all your life and then all of a sudden, people say it correctly. It's shocking and exhilarating. It's one small victory stacked on another."

Submitted Prompt #21
Person A, an aspiring actor, is finally taking classes to follow their dreams. However, after every role they play, they continue to "get stuck in character." It's only after they meet closeted System B that they stop worrying over it because they're not the only one who "gets stuck in character!" But after a turn of events during a performance where System B switches mid-act and the current fronting headmate has no idea what's going on, Person A realizes that there's more going on with System B then they thought. And maybe even with themself(s).

“Are you in the mood for some sad romance books? Do you want to cry comfortably while reading? Well, do I have the sad, sad list for you. Readers, like yourselves, come to sad romance books with the expectation that it will hurt, but they will be happy about it by the end.
Crying at books is a wonderful thing, especially at books with a Happily Ever After or Happy For Now (HEA/HFN) waiting for you at the end. There is something incredibly impressive about a romance book that can make you cry. Objectively, romance readers know that everything will work out for the main couple in the end. They are romances after all. Nevertheless, we still cry when sad romance books warrant a deluge of tears.“

I started reading Act Cool by Tobly McSmith today and I can already say two things about it:
1. It's going to make me cry so much I can feel it already
2. My gender identity crisis is on it's way back am I nonbinary or am I trans who knows? I surely don't. The only thing I know is that I'm not a girl even though I'm afab the rest is a mystery even for me.

Pony just wants to fly under the radar during senior year. Tired from all the attention he got at his old school after coming out as transgender, he’s looking for a fresh start at Hillcrest High. But it’s hard to live your best life when the threat of exposure lurks down every hallway and in every bathroom. Georgia is beginning to think there’s more to life than cheerleading. She plans on keeping a low profile until graduation…which is why she promised herself that dating was officially a no-go this year. Then, on the very first day of school, the new guy and the cheerleader lock eyes. How is Pony supposed to stay stealth when he wants to get close to a girl like Georgia? How is Georgia supposed to keep her promise when sparks start flying with a boy like Pony?
Mod opinion: I haven't read this book and looking at the reviews I probably wont as it deals with very heavy topics while being marketed as a cute romance and neither genre appeals to me.

Stay Gold Star
A Poem by me
Currently reading a book of yours
I watch in fascination as you strain your creative muscles as far as they can go
Trying to avoid the wrath of the SJWs you so greatly fear
“They are a lesbian. Not because I implied being a lesbian is bad in my last book.”
“They are non-binary. Not because I have made enbyphobic comments in the past or anything.”
Your grasping is humorous. Like those of a desperate salesman advertising last season’s greatest fad.
I am enraptured by it as heavily as a child with a fascinating insect.
But you’re trying, I guess
You get a “Stay Gold” Star.
This is dedicated to Tobly McSmith
