Releasing last week this is a collection of the classic Toaplan arcade shooters, Hellfire & Zero Wing. The DLC which is included with the retail version adds in the Arcade game Demon's World along with the Mega Drive and PC Engine CD versions of each game.

Our editor was playing it yesterday and has been enjoying it along with the other Toaplan collections. We should cover them at some point as well.

Wardner

Toaplan is mostly known for their shoot-em-up output, but they had plenty of games in other genres, even if they weren’t quite as prolific. One of these was 1987’s Wardner (known as Wardner no Mori (“The Forest of Wardner”) in Japan, and Pyros in North American arcades. It’s a side-scrolling dark fantasy action title, similar to Capcom’s Ghosts n’ Goblins (which preceded it by two years) and Irem’s Legend of Hero Tonma (which came two years later) The premise is that a young boy and his ladyfriend have found themselves in the dangerous forest of the fearsome warlock Wardner; the girl gets kidnapped and it’s up to the guy to save her. It’s likely that the name “Wardner” came from “Werdna”, the antagonist of the first Wizardry, as they’re spelled the same in Japanese.

Update: the thing I was missing--and arcade flyer scans bear out at least the publishing part of this--is that 1979 arcade Yosaku is actually credited to SNK as developers and publisher. (Was reminded of this by Brandon Sheffield of @necrosoftgames, who wrote the Yosaku entry for the Museum section of SNK 40th Anniversary Collection!) So why does the arcade Yosaku's title screen credit "OLCA CORPORATION" with development? Was it a joke? Were the Orca Corporation people working at SNK at the time?

Ah, some of the comments (Google translated from Japanese) below that one OLCA CORPORATION video,

mention that Orca Corporation produced a lot of pirated boards; so this could have been a pirate board by Orca of the SNK original. Whatever this version is, it has hazards also dropping from the tree branches! = o
