am I the only one who hates the fact that marvel's norse stuff is inserted in a larger universe of super heroes? i love the asgardian corner of marvel but i hate super hero as a genre and i hate being reminded that my favorite asgardian marvelites exist in the same universe as, like, the hulk or something
I think that's a very understandable grievance. Despite Loki's unexpected popularity, the MCU's Norse stuff tends to be mishandled and seen as "lesser" than other parts of the MCU. It's seen as "over-the-top fantasy melodrama" in a universe that refuses to take itself seriously and have an ounce of sincerity because "that's what the cool kids do". It was cool to dunk on Thor movies back in the 2010s.
It often feels like they only bring Loki up just to get people to watch or sit their asses at a movie theatre in hopes he might show up. And I will never forgive that they didn't let the Loki series be its own thing and actually about Lokis. It was used to set up other movies, and fucking product placement.
The mishandling has brought many batches of fans with differing interests and genre expectations as well. But it's a shame that they're usually mishandled because even those different directions could be interesting (e.g. high fantasy, space adventures, pre-determinisn dystopia).
I think I wasn't really ready for this episode to tie together the events with Loki's entire arc. I expected it to tie up the plots of the season, maybe setting up future ones, which it kind of did but,
The way it tied up/referenced/came full circle with the first Thor movie? And The Avengers? That is what makes it hit different for me. It showed a love for the character that just got to me.
a playlist for anyone who's really into the music they use for Thor now; can function as an essentials playlist for people who aren't that familiar with the genre yet
For anyone keeping track (no one), I have started watching the first Avengers film (MCU not the 60s TV show) but only while eating lunch so it's gonna take a while. So far Nick Fury has been assembling the Avengers (the film was initially released in the UK as Avengers Assemble - because of that 60s TV show - but it's not called that on D+ so I'm calling it what the Americans called it, just FYI) even though there's not yet anything for them to avenge as That Suit Guy (j/k I know his name too!!) isn't dead yet, and now they're on THE FUCKING VALIANT FROM DR WHO and I assume we're gonna continue assembling for a while as they're not all there yet.
MEANWHILE Loki (who is neither an alligator nor a woman in this???) is in a SECRET UNDERGROUND LAIR with a bunch of his stans who are... idk something technobabble that involves irridium and anti-protons. He is there looking for the tesseract on behalf of ???? who I know will be revealed 47 films from now as... no, wait, it wasn't, was it? That was just announced on a website or something? So it could be LITERALLY ANYONE. The Avengers (in-progress) also seem to be after that thing, but I have already forgotten why everyone is wanting it, assuming it was mentioned (it probably was).
Thor hasn't shown up yet, but Arrows Hawkeye is working as a Loki Stan and there's Steve Rogers and THE HULK and The Only Woman One, whose power is that she's a Cold War assassin (??) and I think this one is the film where she gets called a cunt (!) and honestly I am not sure which of the men she's getting officially shipped with, I think Arrows Hawkeye though? Fairly sure, as the alternative is that a man and a woman like each other as people but not in a lusty way, which would never happen obviously. (Hey I may ship mostly het* pairings but I don't always like it!)
Based on the Valiant (if u don't know who she is get da hell out of here!) I am guessing that the film ends with Loki dying in Thor's arms romantically but then I remembered that I know it can't because one of Loki got kidnapped from... either the end of this film or the start of the next one or POSSIBLY just from a later film's time-travel bit (???) but like... maybe they've edited this film secretly and I was right after all? But nobody else has watched it on Disney + recently so nobody knows yet? IT COULD HAPPEN.
Not sure what to make of this film so far, a lot's been going on yet also not much has been going on, and the one I like best so far (Suit Guy) is gonna die (NOT EVEN IN THOR'S ARMS ROMANTICALLY) and god Iron Man really hasn't aged well now that we have that one tech billionaire being a twat in public all the time to remind us what such people tend to be like. WHERE IS THOR????
*I say het but everyone in everything is bisexual, I know this because I thought of it and announced it on tumblr and will now say "I don't make the rules" to make it an objective FACT. I don't make the rules!!!
Im sorry. I wasnt saying u said retcon. I meant as a general question
It does feel way more like retcon (and it's annoying and I need them to stop fucking up my HCs). The reboot won't happen in a very long time because I doubt that Feige wants to scrap everything and restart yet, plus, in Loki's case, he doesn't need a reboot if Disney's greedy ass ever wants to save money with a cheaper and younger actor, because comics!Loki dies and reincarnates. I get the feeling kid!Loki will be back outside of the Loki series soon, and they might be setting up the Young Avengers. There won't be a need for a reboot of the Thor franchise in a VERY LONG TIME.
no but listen i am constantly thinking about the mcu and other franchises like star wars and dc have tried to replicated their cinematic universe and i think the problem is that these big budget movies aren't willing to commit to the concept of a stand alone film. the entire reason avengers (2012) actually works is because all of the movies beforehand were complete stand alone action flicks that tied into the same universe only by a few end credit scenes and the fact that SHIELD was at least mentioned in each movie. when you go over to the DCEU they're trying so hard to get to the justice league and they haven't even made a batman movie yet!!!
i also think this is why the mcu started sucking after age of ultron because they stopped making stand alone movies and instead made a cinematic experience where you had to go to antman: 17 revenge of the cockroaches just so you could see an ensemble movie where deadpool crosses the multiverse to find spiderman's girlfriend for an ocean's 11 team up with moon knight
God it's so strange having a show I like that actually has regular and consistent output, after so many fandoms with years between seasons/series.
Venture Bros: get rekt
Sherlock: Fuck the fans
Marvel: lol wtf is an output schedule? Fans are replaceable anyway
Meanwhile Taskmaster over here giving us two series per year, plus a yearly special, plus another special every five series (ish, scheduling depending). It's nice to be fed and happy for a change.
You all hate Taika Waititi for ruining Thor. I hate him for hiring known abuser Michael Fassbender for HIS OWN film "Next Goal Wins." Look up Sunawin Andrews.
All around questionable behavior, really!
We're all in this together, buddy.
[I wanna clarify that we're only talking about his work. nothing beyond that.]
