Sassy, how did you get into Sonic The Hedgehog? As well who is your favourite character and why?
Oh boyyy, you ready for a journey?
So, Sonic… I didn’t know much about gaming growing up, my parents were kinda against it, still are. When I was younger, my dad would sometimes drop my brother and me off at my aunt’s so she could watch us and she had, lone and behold, a Nintendo Wii with a copy of Wii Sports. Only got to play it a few times, but I loved playing against my cousin in golf. Our neighbor, however, had an XBox 360 and Wii, so when we could, we would go over and play (I would more so watch since I was so terrible at games). My brother and I decided we HAD to get a console, Nintendo because of the first party games. Problem: the Wii was over $100, not something two broke kids could get. So, we went with the next best thing: a Gamecube. A used one was only about $20 on Amazon, so my brother picked out a good one and placed an order.
We both started researching good games and looking up playthroughs, picking out games like Super Mario Sunshine and F-Zero GX. We went to a store that has sadly since closed, but it was a retro game store called GameSwap. We would spend hours there, just looking at all the old games and it was always so quiet and such a peaceful shop. They never had many Gamecube titles, although they had a copy of Sonic Mega Collection. My brother heard good things about Sonic (oddly enough, this was around the time Colors released and the “dark age” had just ended) so we picked it up. We got home and we wanted to play a game together, so we popped in Mega Collection and brought up Sonic 2. My brother was Sonic and I played as Tails. We put countless hours into that game, often just messing around and trying to get as close to a cliff as we could without falling. We had a blast and always played it together and I was always Tails. As we bought more games online, my brother got Sonic Adventure 2: Battle. I was a little picky and wanted to play the Adventure games in order, not knowing if the stories were linked at all, so I bought Sonic Adventure DX and just stared at SA2′s case while waiting for the first one to come in the mail. SADX came and I had a blast. After I beat it, I moved on to SA2 and basically never looked back. When we weren’t playing Mario Kart Double Dash or Sonic 2 together, I would play SA2.
After saving our money all summer, we finally had enough to get a Nintendo Wii. The Wii U was about to launch, so Nintendo’s last Wii’s were being made without Gamecube back compatibility and that was important to us. Our Gamecube glitched and sometimes made noises, there was a Blue Coin in Sunshine that every time we’d try to grab it, the game could overload and crash. Only that one coin. It was strange. We waited until Black Friday to try and get a good deal (heads up: it didn’t matter. It was still full price) and our Mom took us to the only Gamestop in our area which still had 1 Wii left with back compatibility they were holding for us. The two employees working in that empty store were so nice, they said they were so amazed that us, two kids, were able to save up and buy a Wii with our own money. They probably broke a few rules doing this, but they gave my brother and I both Super Mario 3D Land key chains for free. I still have that key chain.
My brother and I got the Mario Kart Wii bundle but we wanted one more game for our shiny new console. On the shelf was a used copy of Sonic Colors. I played the Adventure games and liked them, played more Sonic 2 than I care to admit, so why not pick up Colors? I loved the game. Played through it, looked for all the red rings, tried to get all S ranks, it was so much fun. I was starting to see if there was a blue hedgehog on a box, it was a game I would love.
2011 and Generations dropped it’s first big trailer. My brother was ecstatic. He showed me the trailer and I was blown away with the pretty CGI and all aboard the hype train. I watched the trailer all the time, just waiting for the game to release and not be on hardware we had. The game dropped, got great scores, meanwhile I was playing the old games like Heroes and working hard to 100% SA2.
Our neighbor, whom had an Xbox 360, picked up a copy and I got to play it for a few minutes. I sucked terribly, so I just let my brother play, although it was certain, I was a Sonic fan.
Lost World rolled around and I was hyped, I remember screaming at my friends “WAIT THIS COUNTRY ALREADY HAS THE GAME OUT AND SOMEONE UPLOADED A PLAYTHROUGH” welcome to the trend of me staying up late watching YouTube. When we got a Wii U, we picked up Lost World and I enjoyed it, although I never went back to the game.
I discovered the Archie comics, watched Sonic X and even somehow sat through all of Sonic Underground. The only one I couldn’t sit through at all was the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. It was just too far out for me.
However, that was how I became a Sonic fan. Ironic my brother used to be a bigger fan than me, now look who owns every Sonic game on Steam.
As for my favorite character, Tails. It goes back to playing Sonic 2, I was always Tails. I liked this little fox. He grew on me. Those memories of playing with my brother mean even more now that we’re both adults and he works, there’s hardly ever time for us to just sit down and play games together. Me playing as Tails is just something that stuck, something I loved. Tails himself is a good character, now considered a bit of a trope with the whole young very smart kid, but his story of being bullied until finding a good friend like Sonic is something I always found sweet. I don’t know if any character can top the emotional attachment I have to Tails.
-Sassy
