New Bundle of Multi Fandom Fic Recs

Fics from various fandoms that have made it into my favorites pile in the last few months. I’ve included the first fics in some unfinished series in this bunch, so if that bothers you be sure to check the series pages before you start to read. Here you will find recs for The Untamed/MDZS, SVSSS, Word of Honor, and Star Wars. One of these days I will create master lists for each fandom.These are a mix of gen and slash with a range of ratings, so read at your own risk. Don’t forget to leave some love for the authors.

Jin Guangshan is the only leader who ascended as an adult, who didn't have his parents murdered by the Wen, who didn't come of age during a war. The last adult standing, the only one with experience and age. He assumes this will put him in the most advantageous position, once the war ends. That the infant leaders of the other clans will gladly fall into step within his shadow.

The original Shen Qingqiu suffers a severe deviation that unsettles his daemon, transforming them into a childish and inconstant creature, too curious and without any memories of the life that has made him so bitter. His soul is now unrecognizable to him and everyone can see his humiliation.

Shen Yuan isn't exactly happy to have transmigrated into Proud Immortal Demon Way at all, much less as this doomed scum villain's daemon.

Celestial Afterglow by elanor_pam

Shang Qinghua, also known as Airplane Shooting Towards the Sky, stared flatly at what had once been a field boasting near sect-level Feng Shui alignment, and the drowned, bloated remains of the Sun and Moon Dew Flower cuttings that had sprouted within it. Their plan was now quite literally a wash.

If only he could consult Cucumber Bro on how to save Cucumber Bro! But in the absence of Cucumber Bro, he could but rely on the one plot coupon the infamous Peerless Cucumber had ever applauded.

Tongfang by The Feels Whale (miscellea)

Shen Yuan is reincarnated as a cannon fodder character and eventual murder victim in one of the whodunnit arcs in Proud Immortal Demon Way. Things escalate quickly.

Or: that one where young Luo Binghe’s career goal is ‘Bride’.

There are so many incredible ones to pick from! This is such a huge fandom that practically exploded overnight. Again, here are a few recs off the beaten path.

Smells Like Teen Spirit by trinityofone (Black Pete/Israel Hands/Lucius Spriggs)

Izzy gets de-aged and learns how to accept himself in the process.

“Fuck,” Izzy says, scrambling up, past Edward’s steadying hands and toward the water. There’s a helpful little tidepool, and when he drops to his knees beside it, he sees what his frantic fingers have already confirmed: smooth cheeks. A crest of soot-black hair. Boyishly skinny shoulders, heaving as he breathes.

“Told you it were cursed,” Buttons says, helpfully.

Oh man, oh man, oh man. The imagery in this fic alone makes me shriek wordlessly. But, in addition to that, you have to gorgeous character work. You can literally feel the unspoken in this one.

“Five years,” Izzy says, flat. His voice has that rasp to it, that sound like he’s deigning to scrape the words he’s giving you off from the very bottom of his shoe. “Five years and you end up in this shithole.”

He says that he's a Jiang disciple that had arrived late and so had snuck in through the gates. He hadn't expected the lie to work, sure that it would unravel as soon as they found a Jiang to verify it, but instead Jiang Yanli backs up his story, and even adds to it.

Which is how he ends up masquerading as the first disciple of Lotus Pier while trying to figure out how to get out of Cloud Recesses without anyone discovering that he's the disciple of Baoshan Sanren.

“Wei Ying,” Nie Mingjue said, sounding a bit regretful, “Your parents aren’t coming back.”

Or, Nie Mingjue and Nie Huaisang run into Wei Ying while in Yiling and decide to bring him home. And it changes everything.

A decade later, Wei Ying is a widow with 3 kids and is in a mental institution for being a danger to himself. Jiang Cheng wanting to make up for past mistakes finds Lan Wangj, who is now a struggling psychiatrist, banished from his Lan family. Wangji promises to never abandon Wei Ying again.

(Character death refers to Wen Qing and Jin Zixuan, so does the C tag).

Time travel fix-it AU, diverging from after Wei Wuxian's death and before Lan Wangji's punishment.

One: Perhaps the not-voice is a spirit, wailing its own grief. Two: Perhaps it is Wei Wuxian. There is no shortage of unhappy spirits in the world, now, so there is no certainty of that, but Lan Wangji must find out if there is any chance at all. Three: They have not taken his guqin, but the guards will hear it if he plays, and they may stop him. Four: He must then leave Cloud Recesses.

At least that’s the only explanation he has for this impossible situation. After falling from the cliff he woke up in his 15 year old body, just before his months of study at Cloud Recesses.

So, thinking it was for the best, he decides to disappear when he was supposed to be searching for their lost invitation.

Little does he know someone else came back in time with him.

"Well, hello, Protector," Jiang Cheng spat before turning the ring on his finger into a huge, deadly whip.

The two boys near Wei Wuxian gave him a surprised look, but Wei Wuxian ignored them, unable to look away from his brother.

His Support Bond Mark, on his right inner forearm, suddenly began to burn, as if reacting to the presence of the newcomer. Wei Wuxian reflexively covered his Mark with his left hand, and Jiang Cheng narrowed his eyes when he saw him do so.

The Sect Leader stretched out his whip with both hands, and the purple lightning coming out of the weapon dimly illuminated the cold hatred on his face:

"You should have stayed dead."

a few of el's shl post–ep. 36 fic recs

i’ve read a lot of amazing post–ep. 36 fics! here are a few of them. this list is mostly for some of my friends and acquaintances who just recently finished the show and is catered around my own taste. feel free to add onto this list with reblogs and replies! these are all wenzhou, and are (obviously) not spoiler-free if you haven’t finished the show.

替我踏遍天涯; walk the edge of the sky for me by yiqie (9.6k, T) wkx’s body crumples, and zzs takes action through grief that is still raw. zzs takes wkx down the mountain to heal him. this fic is full of deep feelings both between wkx and zzs, but also between them and the other people in their lives who care about them. i love this fic because it spends a lot of time focusing on the relationships between wenzhou and the people in their support network.

“Beiyuan.” Zhou Zishu struggles to focus on his face, still blinking clouds out of his eyes. “My shidi, he—”

“He’s alive,” says Beiyuan. Not, He’s okay. “We decided to put you both in the same bed, lest you wake up alone and panic.”

The tone of Beiyuan’s voice is far too pointed for Zhou Zishu’s liking.

the annals of history, now dust by sundermount (8.9k, M) wkx and zzs descend the mountain. i love this story because it explores a time period that not many fics do—this is far, far post–canon, decades and decades after the end of episode 36. this fic is soft, wistful, and bittersweet; it feels like looking at old family photographs and wondering what their lives were like.

“Don’t speak with your mouth full,” Zishu scolds, but helps himself to it. He hadn’t realised how much he’d missed hot food, the silk-smooth meat of the chicken and the salt of the soy that seasons it, how the soup almost scalds his tongue, fills his belly. Their last hot meal's too distant a memory, now.

He doesn’t comment on the way Wen Kexing continues to eat, only following as Zishu does, matching him mouthful for mouthful, bite for bite. As if they’re walking through a field of traps and he only dares to step in Zishu’s own footprints, go where he's already trod.

an eternity to consider by TheDameJudiWench (4.3k, E) yet another absolutely lovely, intimate story from Judi. this work is centered around trust and loss and wanting. wkx and zzs are learning to be with each other in the midst of trauma while facing the inevitability of eternity.

"Ow," Wen Kexing says, wetly. He bats at Zhou Zishu's head. "Why are you being a beast?"

Zhou Zishu kissed him when he thought he was dying. He tasted his blood and licked his teeth and held him so tight there were fingermarks on his cold skin for days and days. What have they ever done but devour one another? "Because I want you to stop acting surprised that I've been unhappy here. You've been unhappy here too. Haven't we got time to be miserable for a while? Haven't we earned that?"

Endless Forms Most Beautiful by Mangacat (1.7k, T) i listened to this fic first as a podfic and then came back and read it. the podfic especially nearly moved me to tears; it was beautifully performed! this fic is a careful exploration of the moment where wkx’s life passes into zzs’s, and answers the question of how exactly did wkx survive?

Zhou Zishu has no more than a second to savour his elation before it curdles into wretched fear. Before the hands laid against his slacken and slide down, taking the last pearling drops of their connection with them. He knows with immediate and terrifying certainty that the moment that thread breaks, that will be the end of it, nothing else to be done.

silent and immutable as snow by elrohir (3.2k, E) this is my own fic lol! i wrote this story in a post ep. 36 whirlwind of tears and screaming and being mad at wkx for his choice. this story considers the space between zzs opening his eyes and seeing wkx’s collapsed form and wkx waking up, and how both of them reconcile in the aftermath.

Zhou Zishu thinks, then, of Wen Kexing’s long fingers, slicing vegetables with a cook’s knife in their kitchen at the Four Seasons Manor, a place now twice-lost; he thinks next of how easily Wen Kexing could have cut through skin and innards instead, of how he chose to bring life instead of take it. In the end, he did not extend the same mercy to himself.

Exposed to the air, the fan begins to crumble, and Zhou Zishu is crumbling too. All he wants is the warmth of Wen Kexing’s fingers and his smile over a plate of pickled radishes.

Fanfics that I enjoyed in 2021

If you've followed my monthly reading recs, then you might have noticed that I've read very little fanfic, esp in the past few months. That hiatus ended in early Dec when I reached 100 reads on GR and promptly abandoned books for fic lol

With the year coming to a close and my monthly review project coming to an end, I wanted to make a list of some of the fics I loved this year/month. I might not have read a ton, but I discovered some gems.

This post isn't as detailed as I'd have liked (or as I'd initially planned), but I'm in bed with covid and can't muster the energy to dive deeper into my reading history or write long recs; I do want to get this post out, though, because it cheers me up to share the joy I received from these works with you. It will make me even happier if you find something to enjoy! (do let me know! It pleases me no end when people come back to tell me they loved something I recced.)

So, without further ado, here are some fics I adored in the past 12 months, all highly recced:

First sight by any_open_eye (wangxian, 1.2k, M) Beautiful writing. I devoured everything else this author has written.

Heart Like Neon by @lqtraintracks (drarry, 41k, E) I loved several LQT fics this year (Mad Sparks, 5,400 miles, Two Starts One Finish, Bolts) [how could I not, LQT's the bomb] but the tension in this one destroyed me.

The Pleiades Were Watching Too by @the-starryknight (drarry, 1k, M) A spectacular future tense angsty drarry. (and everything else Starry wrote for the Summer Writin' Challenge,. Go check the series out, it's a marvel of craft!)

(our friendship) up against the ropes by daltoneering (wangxian, 37k, E) One of the most memorable wangxian fics I've read, with a sex scene that lasted almost 9k and not one word felt gratuitous. What is this magic? Super hot and emotional, a reread for sure.

After the Final Rose by azurewaxwing (wangxian, 55.4k, E), Bachelor AU, absolutely brilliant. The kind of story you click on to check out the beginning and end up inhaling all ~60k in one night. This author has some awesome fics, incl this superb example of epistolary fic (plus academia): (no one else can) take me there.

A light turned on in the night by lunarriviera (Yizhan, 12k, E) Incandescent.

A Lifetime of Study by Tepre (wangxian, 15k, E). The typical "tearing your heart out of your chest and stomping on it" experience one expects from this author; thanks, @tepre. <3

in the blossom season (in the pouring rain) by varnes (wangxian, 14k, M) Single dad Lan Wangji and florist Wei Wuxian and identity porn x 3. Loved it to bits. (am so looking forward to Varnes's SNL AU live from new york; it sounds incredible)

#vanlife (all things go) by TheDameJudiWench (wangxian, 15k, E) My author crush this year. I've gone back to their work again and again. They've written some of the best Dead Doves I've read.

For Want of a Nap by nirejseki (several ships, 6k, M) Hilarious.

Byzantium: The W. B. Yeats Quintet by eldritcher A series of 5 fics featuring Snape x someone else each time. The prose is phenomenal, the pairings incredibly unusual, and the mood is totally up my alley. Outstanding.

can you feel it by lanzhancore (wangxian, 5.3k, E) Crack fic, which isn't usually my thing, but I had a ball with this author's works, esp their slutty Wei Wuxian. This one is hilarious.

why wait by novembersmith (hualian, 3.7k, E) Gorgeous.

I'll prob remember another ten outstanding fics the moment I press "post" but this is the way of things. Thank you, dear authors, for making me happy and giving me comfort when I needed it. Here's to more fantastic works in 2022 xx

Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji, as sect leader and heir, have always been expected to live as righteous examples, perfect in cultivation and irreproachable in character. And so they have.

But the dao seeks balance. The brothers are expressions of the same virtues; it must follow that they would fall in love with expressions of the same vices.

Wonderful new Word of Honor fic! Sci fi WenZhou, deep and sad and romantic and hopeful. And, because it's by TheDameJudiWench, it's full of cool images, compelling prose, and just the right amount of explanation. There's clarity and a solid narrative but also plenty of space left for the reader's mind to wiggle into the corners of the story.

The first time a attendant spills Zuko’s tea and doesn’t immediately fall to her knees, begging the Fire Lord’s forgiveness, it is not anger but a resounding warmth that fills his chest.

Zuko's advisors decide that it would be best for the Fire Lord to be entered into a political arranged marriage.

Zuko might be suspiciously fine with this.

Jet looks desperately to Katara. “He admitted it!” he exclaims. “War or not, Lee’s a firebender! He’s from the Fire Nation.”

Katara frowns at him. “Jet, we know.”

Jet gapes at her. “You—?”

The blind earthbender hops down from her perch at the counter, wanders over to join her friends and Lee. “’Course we know,” she says with a wide grin, and punches Lee on the arm. He glares at her. The earthbender’s grin somehow widens further. “It’d be kinda hard for him to be the Firelord if he wasn’t from the Fire Nation.”

There’s a moment of silence, and then Jet wheezes, “He's the what?”

Zuko pulls away first. He stares at Sokka and raises his one brow. “You do realise,” he says dryly, “that you just instigated a major international incident?”

Or: Sokka is impulsive. This is a problem. Especially when he ends up kissing the Fire Lord and immediately running away.

The Timeline of Theseus by Applea

Jon tries to force the Spiral to send him back, but the Sprial's corridors never twist things quite the way you want them to. Back in 1996, Elias has no idea why or how the Eye made such a powerful Avatar out of an 8 year old, especially when said 8 year old doesn't actually know he has any powers at all. Clearly such a child cannot be left outside the Institute's care.

Untamed

When Wei Wuxian died, Lan Wangji was rendered a widower. It turns out, he's the only one who realized that — including his oblivious, clueless husband, who deigns to ask one day if his husband found anyone romantically while he was dead.

From there, everything unravels: after all, it's one thing for Wei Wuxian to convince himself he had sex with Wen Chao willingly when he didn't know he was married, and another thing entirely to think he did it when he WAS—

Lan Wangji is not impressed by Wei Wuxian's misplaced guilt and is fully resolved to helping him through his trauma.

Jin Ling had begun to suspect years ago that there were parts of his family history that had been crossed out; long streaks of black where Wei Wuxian had been. The truth is more like whole books being brought up from their hiding places again.
