picture perfect | leehan
part 2 - the invite
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
a/n: i will admit, this did take me longer than i thought.😭 i’m sorry to people who might’ve been waiting for this btw :( but i do hope you all enjoy reading this as much as i enjoyed writing this !! <3
summary/preview , part one , part two
pairing: photographer! Leehan and model! reader
After two years of being a professional photographer for watch companies, Leehan remains true to his craft, choosing to only focus on photography and work. Any model he worked with, he made sure it was strictly business.
But there was something different about this event. Perhaps it was the music and the lights or maybe it was the adrenaline talking, but something changed Leehan's mind. You. He first saw you in the advert at the entrance of the party. At first, it was the elegance of the watch that he was interested in, quietly appreciating the beauty within the silver and gold dial. His eyes grazed over the watch in the picture before he finally saw the model. The watch accentuated her sharp, yet somehow soft features. Her eyes were deep, full of intense emotion, as though she was a siren. Why had he never seen you before? He stilled, wondering where Omega found you because, to him, everything about you was timeless, classy, and elegant.
God, events like this drained him as he stared blankly at the woman on stage, watching as she rambled on about the handmade details of the new watch collection. Your face flashed across the screen as the various pieces were shown. The lights were slightly dimmed, but he could still see the sparkle of the lights reflected on your hair.
Across the room, you were busy mingling, chatting with the whose who of Omega. The party itself was very well organized, with the servers being incredibly attentive to all the guests. You beckoned a server over, passing your empty champagne glass to him.
The gala was…interesting to say the least. Thousands of fairy lights and flowers were hung from the ceiling, creating a magical atmosphere. The lights, paired with a mist that traveled across the floor, made each person look as though they’d just fallen out of wonderland. Soft, classical music reverberated through the air, enticing people to gather onto the dance floor.
You stood at the edge of the ballroom, analyzing the gracefulness of the other models invited, as they spun around the floor. The couple you were watching finished their dance with a twirl and a gentle kiss on the lady’s hand. Your eyes glanced across the expanse of the room once more, noticing a man by his lonesome also watching the couples dance.
The man wore an outfit that made him look as though he’d just come from the woods. His hair was slightly messy, probably from mingling too, you thought to yourself. He had a tall stature and was incredibly handsome, but there was something familiar about him. After a few seconds, it finally dawned on you why he was familiar to you. He was Leehan, the famous photographer for Omega. Of course! you thought to yourself. You’d been told before that you’d be working with him. So, naturally, you fluffed your light blue gown and made your way over to him.
Leehan was no fool. He knew that you were watching him from across the room. Honestly, it gave him an adrenaline rush that you stared at him for so long, knowing a girl as pretty as you found him handsome. Putting his wine on the draped table behind him, he noticed you were making your way towards him. You...were absolutely enchanting, he thought to himself.
A few strides and you found yourself in front of Leehan. Was he always this gorgeous up close? You took a deep breath, hoping he couldn't hear how fast your heart was beating. He stared at you, his gaze slowly traveling over your figure as if you were the finest piece of jewelry.
Leehan’s one rule of not blurring the line between business and personal relationships was starting to change as he stared ever so deeply at you. For you, he’d risk it all. He winked at you as he joked, “Milady, where’s your prince?” You stifle a laugh, looking back up at him. Amused, you smack him lightly, chiding, “Why? Are you offering to be my prince for the night?”
"Maybe." He paused, "I've forgotten to introduce myself. I'm Leehan, the photographer." He extended his hand, eyes hopeful for you to shake his hand too.
Flashing him a small smile, you take his extended hand, firmly shaking it. "I'm Y/n, one of the new models. Aren't you being humble? I seem to recall numerous brands wanted you as their photographer but you declined."
Leehan intently stared at you, letting go of your hand. He pursed his lips in thought before saying, "Yes, well, I have standards..." He trailed off, eyes leaving your figure to look at the decorations around him.
He throws his head back, awkwardly laughing before smiling down at you. The laughter subsided and once again, you found yourself under Leehan’s intense gaze. Your confidence was slowly crumbling as he stared at you, unblinking. The risks of starting a relationship with him were running through your mind. But you didn’t care. In this precise moment, as you locked eyes with Leehan, time could stop and you’d still find yourself searching for him. Your very own prince of time.
“Can I…kiss you?” Leehan knew saying that was a risk, perhaps because you were a stranger, but he wasn’t thinking about that. He flicked his eyes downward at your plush lips, painted a beautiful pink. Your eyes searched his for any hint of doubt. And you decided you had nothing to lose as you placed your hand on his cheek, slowly closing the distance between the two of you.
The kiss itself was innocent, yet filled with unspoken desires. Leehan slid his hand into your hair, relishing in the warmth of your lips and how it tasted of Champagne. You were melting in the way his lips moved so perfectly against yours. Smiling softy into his lips, you pull away, not missing the small whine he let out. His face was flushed but he was unable to hide his grin. You leaned your head into his chest, feeling comfortable as you heard the soft thumps of his heartbeat. He gently kissed the crown of your head, saying, “Dinner at White Capitol?”
You smile, taking his hand in yours, holding it tightly. “As long as you pay.” You know he’s going to pay, as he’s ever the gentleman. And you think of the risks again before deciding that he’s a risk worth taking.
The End 🫶🏼

mrs. reed i have an important question pls. or two actually. it's for fanfiction purposes and also i am obsessed with ur fashion and hair headcanons and regularly check the tag for updates.
how would a fem!selmy character dress ? also important note she spends a lot of time in braavos.
how would a fem!halfdornish half volantene character dress? she also grew up enslaved so not a big fan of red priests OR volantis.
how would a fem!house strong character dress? it's viserys' court in the late (rotting corpse) stages and she's very ambitious. thankyyy
it's very specific but maybe a challenge considering? idk i love your headcanons and want to know your thoughts but feel free to totally and completely ignore/generalize more :))))
Let me read ur fic!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Selmy girls, to me, dress very down-to-earth casually, with a preference for golden yellow colors. The top gown she might wear in Westeros, plain and long sleeves gowns that may or may not be fitted to her, depending on whether she has a surcoat/overgown on as well. The left is a mash of Pentos/Stormlands she can wear in either place. It has the cut of an average gown she might wear in Westeros, but the overcoat, the belt, the headpiece, and patterns are inspired from her time in the Pentoshi ports. The right is a full-Pentoshi gown (shout out to the Chechen culture for his one) with a simple cut and silky fabric to wick away sweat. Metal jewelry and accessories like belts and brooches hand crafted by Essosi artisans, and of course a loose veil/scarf/head wrap to protect her head from the sun
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For your dornish-volantene girl, she might scorn all finery from or that reminds her of Volantis. She wears long strips of light cloth wrapped around to make a loose skirt or pants, and another bolt to create a wrapped top of some kind, and that’s it. Nothing heavy or golden, just something that can give her ease of movement and also not remind her of her enslavers. If she was ever in Dorne, she most likely would adopt that style of clothing, especially on the coasts or in the sands, where there is far less shade than in Volantis. Simple, square cut gowns of cotton that are decorated by incredibly detailed embroidery and other types of patterns. Again, a veil or headscarf is useful in Dorne, but some situations may require full facial coverage from the sun
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unnamed Strong sister my beloved. Bringing her to court while she’s still a young girl, she is dressed as the innocent she is. White gowns with colorful borders and flowery patterns, short puffed sleeves, ringlet curled hair, and a lace neckline high enough to be considered appropriate for a young girl. As she grows up, she starts wearing finer gowns (perhaps from Rhaenyra’s closet), soft silk with gilded lining, neckline pushed down low enough to get a courtiers attention. Once she’s a grown woman, she is far more comfortable, wearing Targaryen colors to symbolize her favor with the crown (or green, depending on which side she’s on). Off the shoulder necklines and flatter sleeves symbolize that she is a woman now, not a child. Many layered gowns with cloth of gold underskirts show off her new wealth.

Why is Jessica often seen with her hair covered? Especially in the second movie of course but she does wear a veil in the first too. Is it a Bene Gesserit rule? And if it is, is there an explanation to why? They’re mostly raised to seduce men so modesty doesn’t sound like a high priority.
I'll quote here the costume designer for Dune and Dune: Part Two here, Jaqueline West. As I understand the main point (in the movie) is that the costumes for Benne Gesserits are based on medieval nuns hence the veils.
Lady Jessica goes through a lot in this film after arriving in Arrakis and fleeing to the Sietch. How do her costumes chart her transformation from where we left off in Part One? When we left her in Dune: Part One, she was still in her stillsuit and dessert wrap. When she gets to the Sietch, she starts dressing like the Fremens—in a more humble style with the rougher linen, almost djellaba-esque long gowns, and wrapped veils, all printed by Matt. Once Lady Jessica becomes the Southern Reverend Mother, her face is tattooed over with the prophecy, and her outfits are elaborate but in earthy tones. What went into this collection? Working with sketch artist Keith Christiansen, we started looking at the Egyptian sarcophagi since the Bene Gesserits are ancient nuns or heads of their particular sect. The sarcophagi are so elaborate, and their shapes are quite beautiful and age-old, with magnificent carving in the details. We used many layers of different fabrics—hand-painted velvets, hand-painted silks, and tapestry fabrics. We purchased all the fabrics, mainly from Italy and some from Thailand and Eastern Europe, and pieced them together into these incredible, ornate patchworks. We painted, dyed, and printed them all in-house. What about the elaborate headdresses on Lady Jessica and the other southern Reverend Mothers? The jewelry came from all over the Middle East and North Africa. I had shoppers in bazaars in Istanbul, Morocco, and Egypt. Then, we disassembled them, and my jewelry maker put everything back in a new way to make it look futuristic. We pieced together different necklaces for each of the Reverend Mothers. We took all of that detail from the sarcophagi and made them come alive. Lady Jessica and the southern Reverend Mothers dress differently from the ones we saw in Part One, i.e., Reverend Mother Mohiam’s entourage of Bene Gesserit sisters, who were all in black.  Mohiam comes from the Emperor’s world. You don’t wear black in the desert, or you’re going to bake. These women have navigated for many, many years through the different desert cultures within the Fremen world. I imagined Fremen sects in the south were different from those in Northern Arrakis. Even though they’re all Reverend Mothers, they are on a different planet. So, I wanted to distinguish them with color, but their shapes are very similar. Yes, their silhouettes and head coverings have a similar look. They’re all based on Medieval nuns and the women of the tarot cards, particularly with the Queen of Swords.

What Does a Black Wedding Dress Mean?
Tumblr media
A black wedding dress means power, sophistication, and a way to express confidence and a strong sense of personal style. ♡ It also symbolizes mystery and elegance, perfect for adding a touch of drama to your wedding. ♡
Tumblr media
As white wedding dresses traditionally represent purity and innocence, you may think that black wedding dresses symbolize the opposite. Still, no, there is a lot of meaning behind a black dress. It also represents individuality and empowerment. Brides who want a bold, sensual, sophisticated, and high-class look prefer black wedding gowns over other colors.
Tumblr media
Is It Okay To Wear A Black Wedding Dress?
Yes, it is perfectly okay to wear a black wedding dress. In western cultures, more and more brides wear non-traditional wedding dresses that reflect their style and preferences.
Black wedding dresses are a stunning and sophisticated choice, especially for evening or winter weddings. They are an excellent option for brides who want a more unconventional or gothic-inspired look. Lots of unique wedding aesthetics call for a bit of black!
Ultimately, the most important thing is feeling comfortable and confident in your wedding dress, regardless of color.
Tumblr media
Where Do Black Wedding Dresses Come From?
Black wedding gowns have a fascinating history that dates back centuries. In Western culture, white wedding dresses became popular after Queen Victoria wore a white dress for her wedding in 1840. Before that, brides often wore colorful dresses, including black. They were trendy in the Victorian era, as mourning attire was usually black, and weddings were seen as a celebration of life and death.
The black wedding gown also has roots in gothic culture, where black is seen as a symbol of rebellion and individuality. In recent years, black wedding gowns have become popular among alternative brides who want to break away from tradition and express their unique style.
Tumblr media
Not only are black wedding dresses sleek and stylish, they're also very versatile and can easily be worn again and again long after you say "I do."
How can I accessorize my black wedding dress?
When it comes to choosing bridal accessories, let your personal style and wedding gown guide your decision. Minimalist brides may opt for delicate jewelry and monochromatic accessories while statement-making brides might be drawn to accessories in bold pops of color.
Can I wear a black wedding dress for my summer wedding?
Yes! Black is a highly versatile color and can work for all types of weddings. For a summer wedding, opt for a black wedding dress crafted from a light and airy fabric like cotton or linen and keep accessories simple and laid-back.
Tumblr media
Veil
Ask your bridal consultant if your black gown has a matching veil. If you're going custom, inquire with your designer if he or she can create a matching veil that incorporates black details or (dare we say) is entirely black! We also think a black birdcage veil is incredibly chic, dramatic, and slightly mysterious. If you're truly going nontraditional in all aspects, ditch the veil and opt for show-stopping jewelry. Gold and silver tones pop even more against the dark hue. Skip the necklace and go for chandelier drop-earrings for an elegant and elongating look. Or, slip on a stack of bracelets for another bold option. Long story short—the options are endless!

leo adjusts the ornate crown with flower details on her head. she was never one to be big on tiaras, crowns, and pieces of jewelry. but she felt that the occasion called for it, she didn’t wish to stand out by having flowers on her head. once she notices the presence of the other, her lips pursed as she was trying to keep her composure. leo had heard of the other, their views quite different and she hoped that they’d be able to keep things cordial between the both of them “lady baratheon, your gown is stunning” she greets the other with a smile, sweet as always, and to everyone “the martellls have thrown an incredible celebration, don’t you think?”

Writing Sample:
Chapter 1: The Meeting
The wood creaking as Aakuti stepped out off of the ship did little to ease her worries. Four days ago, Aakuti learned that she would be marrying Prince Kiaan of Qaizezar and now she was about to meet him for the first time. Aakuti always thought that she would marry someone she fell in love with. That's how marriage always happened in all the fantasy books she read growing up. However, Aakuti was a princess in real life, not one in some fantasy book. Princesses in real life had duties to uphold. Duties such as marrying a stranger prince to comply with a trade agreement between kings. She wondered if Prince Kiaan had any choice in the matter or if the choice was made for him as well.
Now here she was in foreign kingdom about to commit to spending her life with a man she had never met before. Her father had made it very clear that he would get rid of her if she did anything to make the agreement fall through, and that was the only thought reverberating through her mind since the moment she boarded the ship.
"Princess, maybe you shouldn't hide behind me while meeting your future husband and in-laws," Shivani turned her head slightly to look at Aakuti. Shivani was Aakuti's personal gaurd and best friend, and if Shivani wasn't here right now, Aakuti wasn't sure if she would have been able to even get off the ship.
"You're right," Aakuti responded and stepped forward so that she would be walking alongside Shivani instead of behind her. Behind the pair were at least a 100 servants bearing the many exotic gifts Aakuti's father was giving the Kingdom of Qaizezar as dowry. Aakuti held on to Shivani's wrist as she started to make out figures on the otherside of the dock. Her heart was racing, what if Prince Kiaan didn't like what he sees? What if he refused her? Aakuti swallowed before letting out a breath. She was dressed in pale blue silk gown, with long, tapered sleeves and a straight neckline. The gown was trimmed in gold which glimmered in the sunlight, just like her gold jewelry. Women were required to be modest in her kingdom, and while the the gown was demure, it did not hide her figure from peeking through. Her hair had a few strands pinned on the sides while the rest of her black, wavy, hair rolled down past her shoulders to right below her chest.
As they walked closer Aakuti's grip on Shivani's wrist tightened and there were an incredible amount of butterflies in her stomach. Her eyes traveled over the group of people gathered at the end of the dock, trying to get a glimpse of Prince Kiaan.

Chapter 7 - Sparkling Red
"It's here," Law called from the window.
Nami slipped the second comb into her hair and stepped back to do one last check in the mirror. Her hair was pulled up but one loose curl hung past her bangs to her shoulder. "I'm almost ready!"
The dark red gown hugged her curves in all the right ways. Nami thought a necklace would compliment the low sweetheart neckline very well, but she stuck to only wearing the specific items Ichiji gave to her. That included removing Bellemere's gold bangle she always kept on her. He was different from his brothers, but he was still a man. She would stroke his ego and lay on the sweetness until the right opportunity presented itself.
The thick, off-shoulder straps of the dress barely covered her tattoo. She had covered it with makeup earlier and a quick check in the mirror let her know it was still securely hidden. She slipped on a pair of sparkly gold heels and grabbed her purse, double checking the baby den den mushi was sleeping inside.
"I'll be close by. Call me if anything happens." His tone was uncharacteristically warm and caring.
Nami gave his hand a quick squeeze. "Don't worry. I got this." She winked as she exited the apartment, making her way down the steps and into the waiting car.
She was brought to the far side of the island at the edge of the business district. The car stopped in front of what appeared to be a theatre. The door opened and a gloved hand reached down to help her out of the car.
He wore fitted white pants, a black suit shirt, and a red jabot in place of a tie. His white cape was tied across his chest with two golden strands. As she took his hand, she noticed his gold cuff links bore the same ornate design as her newly gifted jewelry. Ichiji certainly had an eye for details.
Nami beamed up at him as he surveyed her appearance. She searched his eyes for any signs of approval. She found no emotion but did notice what she thought were dark brown eyes were actually closer to crimson. He let out a short puff of air before nodding to one of the several men within their security detail and leading her toward the building entrance.
"This place looks incredible. I'm surprised it isn't closer to the entertainment district," she noted. This was one of the areas of Germa she had yet to map out.
He glanced down at her before responding. "The acoustics in a theatre are best served away from the louder parts of a city. It's location is intentional."
"Interesting," she added honestly. "The city planning on this island is unusually impressive."
The edge of his lips twitched, the hint of a smile gone before it arrived. He didn't respond as they walked down a private hall to an elevator that required a key. Nami couldn't help but feel the security practices were a bit over the top, then again everything the royal family did was a bit over the top. The elevator took them to the top floor of the building, and after a short walk down another hallway, Ichiji pulled back a thick red curtain to reveal a private theatre box.
She jumped as she felt a hand on the small of her back push her forward gently. Besides helping her out of the car, this was the first time Ichiji had touched her since they met. His hand retreated as she walked forward, taking one of the two available seats.
"You are uncomfortable with me," he stated flatly as he took the seat next to her, staring down at her coldly.
"Not at all!" She lied.
"You flinched at my touch. You did not do that with my brothers."
Nami let out a small sigh and looked down. When she looked back up at him through long lashes, she had a shy blush across her cheeks. "Honestly," she bit her lip for good measure. "I'm nervous with you. I really want tonight to go well." She even surprised herself with how earnest she sounded. The best lies are the ones based on the truth after all.
She swore she saw a spark in his eye. "You shouldn't worry about that. I am fond of you, and I have taken great lengths to ensure tonight's success." He motioned towards the stage. "It took the better part of a week and a small fortune to ship the Roshwan Kingdom Orchestra here for you."
"You... you brought them here for me?"
"That was simple. The difficult part was keeping it and everything else I have planned for tonight a secret from my brothers."
Nami raised a brow and giggled, remembering how happy Ichiji and Niji were to interrupt her time with Yonji. She saw the edge of his mouth curl upwards, almost definitely part of a smile, when the lights around them dimmed, signaling the start of the show.
The music was incredible, and the design of the theatre was like nothing she'd ever seen. She wondered if the pattern of large suspended panels hanging from the ceiling were specifically designed to enhance the sweet sounds brought to her ears. She closed her eyes, letting the melody wash over her. The music was surprisingly emotional. She touched the man's arm next to her and was pleased at how easily she could pretend it was someone else's. Someone far kinder, although he pretended not to be. Someone whose touch had started a fire in her. She thought about the night before, about how those deep golden eyes made her head spin and his warm hands around her made her breath catch. She felt a warm breath on her ear and she shivered with delight. She froze. That wasn't a memory; it was real. Her eyes opened again and she realized she had pressed her side against the prince, interlocking her fingers with his.
She dared to glance at his face. There was no expression, but something was different. Even with only the dim light reflected from the stage, she saw sparks behind bright crimson eyes.
*****
The rest of the evening was a whirlwind. Ichiji rented out an entire restaurant for just the two of them. The food was exquisite, like nothing she'd ever tasted. Even the route they drove back to the manor was specifically planned to show off only the most beautiful parts of the city. He brought her inside through a side entrance and a hidden staircase she would have to add to her maps later before ending up on the same flower covered balcony from her previous tour.
They shared an absurdly expensive wine as they gazed silently at the stars. Nami was starting to get used to Ichiji's quiet nature, so it caught her off guard when he was the one to break the silence.
"I have a gift for you."
Nami's eyes widened, and she turned to him expectantly, struggling to hide her excitement.
He handed her a black velvet box larger than the others she had received from him. With a nod of approval from the prince, she slowly opened the box to reveal a diamond and gold necklace. She stared at it in awe. With the way the Vinsmokes flaunted their wealth, she expected something over the top. The piece was clearly expensive, but the style was simpler, similar to something she would buy for herself.
"It's beautiful," she finally gasped.
He removed the necklace from the box and began securing it around her neck. "I know. It matches the esthetic of your bracelet."
She held up the ornate golden bracelet he gifted her. "Everything you've given me is so beautiful. I don't know how to thank you."
"Not that bracelet."
He moved back once the necklace was securely in place. She looked at him with a confused expression.
"The gold bracelet that you wear everyday. It seemed like you did not go anywhere without it. I was surprised you did not wear it tonight."
Nami didn't know how to feel about his statement. She instinctively reached into her handbag and pulled out her own golden bracelet.
"It's important to you," he stated.
"Yes."
"Tell me why."
When she couldn't think of a lie, she decided to tell him the truth. "It was a gift from my mother." She turned the metal over in her hands. "She's gone now. It's all I have left of her."
The silence now felt heavy, and Nami shifted uncomfortably waiting for him to respond.
He gently took the bracelet from her hand and slid it onto her wrist. "Come. I want to show you something."
Nami followed him wordlessly. He held her hand as they walked. She was confused. He was being nice. Where his brothers would have held her possessively or seductively, he only touched her hand. Despite his stony visage, she felt like he held it with kindness. Could he really be so different from them? Was there such a thing as a decent Vinsmoke?
He led her down a different stairwell to the first floor. The prince motioned something to one of his security detail who instantly nodded and started jogging in the opposite direction. They continued to walk to the back of the manor, to the only part of the building not on his previous tour. He entered a 6 digit code on a keypad that Nami didn't miss, opening a large metal door.
He led her into the waiting elevator, and they descended into the basement.
*****
The lower levels felt nothing like the rest of the manor. Bright white lights illuminated everything in sight. The walls were plain, not a trace of the ornate molding used in the levels above ground. Her heels clicked loudly with every step along the sterile tile floors. Ichiji didn't bother to give her a tour, passing multiple closed doors before reaching his destination.
The room was at least two stories tall and sectioned off into two parts. The first was lined with tall machines, reaching all the way to the ceiling. Smaller machines and a combination of hardware tools and medical equipment were spread throughout the center. She shivered at the thought of what might take place in that room as he pulled her toward the back.
Separated by a metal partition, the back of the room looked more like an office space. He finally released her hand as he stood in front of a particularly large, gray desk. She watched him bend down and enter another code, opening the bottom drawer of the desk. He retrieved a large file binder from the drawer and closed it with his foot. He thumbed through a few before pulling out a specific file. He placed it carefully on the desk before opening it and pulling out the picture paperclipped to the first page inside. He paused for a moment before handing her the photo of a pale blonde woman with a small smile.
Nami looked back up at Ichiji, beyond confused at what was happening.
"That was my mother," Nami's eyes widened in understanding and she looked back to the photo as he spoke. "That photograph is all I have left of her."
Nami tried to keep her emotions in check. She was confused by Ichiji's actions, maybe even moved by them, but she was also very aware that he had led her into the exact location she had been searching for since arriving in Germa. She buried her excitement, staying in the moment with him. She had to be careful of what she did next.
"I'm sorry," she said softly, grabbing his hand and setting the photo down on the table.
"Don't be. It's her own fault. She may be dead, but she chose it. She chose to leave us."
Nami didn't know how to take that statement. His words were harsh and unforgiving. She was worried she might have upset him, but he continued to hold her hand without pulling away.
She motioned to the file binder left on the desk. "Is there a photo of you as well?" She asked sweetly.
Ichiji pulled out a much bulkier file and handed it to her. He really had no idea what she was really doing there. He might as well be handing it to her on a silver platter.
She opened the folder to find a current photo of the prince on the first page. As she pulled it from the paperclip, a few others fell out behind it. They were all of him at different ages, all in the same pose. She picked up the one of him as a toddler and smiled.
"You were cute," she mused. She glanced at him and had to do a double take when she saw his face. He was leaning casually against the desk, looking down on her with a visible grin. His eyes were deep pools of crimson, brighter than before. She smiled confidently, proud she was able to finally break her target.
Looking back at the folder, she noticed there were more pictures on the next page. She moved to turn the page but found her wrist stopped, firmly in his grasp. It was particularly shocking since she didn't even see him move. He closed the folder and pushed it away from her on the desk, eyeing her carefully.
It was getting easier to read him now, and she could tell something in him was suspicious. She wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him into a hug. "Thank you for sharing that with me," she whispered, planting a chaste kiss on his cheek. She had the prize in her sights. With a little luck she could distract him enough to take it tonight. If not, she was confident she could devise a way to break back in later. Either way, tonight was a success.
She started to let go of him but his arms shot around her, gripping her hard and pulling her against his chest. He positioned his face over her hair and breathed in deeply. Nami was frozen. She literally could not move against his viselike grip. She felt his chest rise and fall at a quicker pace and his grasp tightened.
"Ichiji," she pleaded breathlessly. "Please let go."
His fingers dug into her back as he ripped the combs out of her hair. Her sunset locks cascading down her back. He breathed in her freshly released hair as if it was his only source of oxygen.
Shit.
"Can't... breathe..." she mumbled helplessly as he continued to smother her. She could feel his heart pounding through his chest. He gave no signs of letting go.
She managed to reach her hand around to the front of his throat and pushed as hard as she could on his windpipe. He gagged, releasing her immediately. Nami fell to the floor gasping for air.
He looked down at her for a moment in shock before closing his eyes. He slowed his breathing, and his twisted face slowly returned to the emotionless one she was used to. He opened his eyes again and looked down at her coldly.
She wanted to say something to reassure him or apologize to him, but she knew there was no hiding the fear in her eyes. She was terrified, knowing that trick wouldn't work twice if he decided to do that to her again.
Ichiji cleared his throat and held out a hand to her. "I lost control." He stated simply.
Nami looked at his hand but hesitated.
"I am in control now. I will not hurt you." He moved his hand closer. "Nami, take my hand."
It wasn't a request. She took his hand and allowed him to help her up. She watched him carefully as he released her, moving back to give plenty of space between them.
"You don't keep any of that fancy wine down here, do you?" She joked, trying to break some of the tension.
Ichiji calmly walked to an adjacent desk and opened one of the drawers. The second his back was turned she hurriedly scanned the room, looking for hidden exits or potential weapons. She found neither before her eyes stopped on a surveillance snail. There were several around the room, all of them sleeping with their eyes shut tight.
Ichiji returned with a bottle of scotch and a single glass, which Nami gladly accepted. She downed the glass easily, raising it again to signal for a second pour. Ichiji obliged.
"Thanks for this." She smiled, shaking her glass. "I would've hated to leave on a sour note after such an incredible night, and this scotch is damn delicious."
"Leave?"
Nami felt something forming in the pit of her stomach. "Well, it is past midnight." She motioned to the clock on the wall above them with an apologetic grin.
"No." He stated lowly. Nami saw the spark flicker in his eyes and she swallowed hard. He stepped toward her, letting out a long deep breath. "You're afraid again."
She shook her head to deny it, but her body backed away from him as he moved closer.
"You can't lie to me, Nami." He moved closer still until she was backed into the wall. "You aren't leaving me."
"I don't want to leave," she gasped desperately.
"STOP LYING TO ME!"
His shout echoed within the tall room. The warm crimson of his eyes fully replaced by a sparkling red. Whatever emotional dam he had in place before tonight was broken, no matter how much he fought to control it.
Fear threatened to overwhelmed her as she struggled to find the right words. The only times she was confident about deceiving him were when she was twisting the truth.
She closed her eyes and forced herself to think of Law, speaking to him instead of the man in front of her.
"I don't want to leave," she whimpered. "I don't want to go back." She felt tears building behind her eyes. When she didn't hear him protest, she continued. "I'm just so confused. You make me feel things I know I don't deserve to have." Her tears fell freely, and she opened her eyes just enough to look at the floor.
A gentle hand wiped dry her cheeks. "Nami."
She opened her eyes fully to see his face. Eyes crimson and face stoic, his voice was unwavering. "You don't want to leave me." His words seemed to relax him a bit, and she knew he believed them. "You will stay here."
Nami nodded shortly at the command.
"After tonight you will have nothing to fear from me," he stated before turning on his heels, walking into the larger room they came in through.
Nami glanced at the files still left on the desk. She followed him as far as the partition. He was fiddling with something in the middle of the room. She didn't know what he was planning, but she had no desire to stay long enough to find out. He wasn't going to let her leave on her own, and she doubted she would be able to sneak away from him. She needed help, and she prayed he wouldn't overreact to what she was about to do. She took a deep breath.
"I should call my brother to let him know I won't be back tonight."
He paused briefly before continuing his task. "That's not necessary."
"Really, he'll be worried sick if I don't at least let him know." Her hand was already around the mini den den mushi inside her purse.
"He knows exactly where you are and who you are with. He has no reason to worry for your safety," he reasoned logically.
"You don't know my brother," she smirked. She was already dialing the den den mushi. "It's no big deal. It'll just take a second."
"Nami?" Law's voice came through the snail almost immediately, hardly even having a chance to ring.
She began to speak but no sound came out. She felt the hand around her neck before she saw the face in front of her.
"Dammit Nami." His breath began to quicken again. He closed his eyes but didn't let her go. "I said it isn't necessary."
Nami dropped the snail. Ichiji caught it easily with his free hand and ended the call.
"He's already here."
*****
Law crouched against a large tree on the grounds of the manor when the den den mushi rang. He told Nami he would be close by and he meant it literally, following the pair at a safe distance from the moment she left the apartment.
He stared down at the now sleeping den den mushi before pushing off the tree and heading for the main gates. She didn't need to give the code word for him to know she was in trouble. He dialed the Polar Tang as he ran.
"Captain."
"We don't have much time. Get everything to the docks now."
"Yes sir."
Law's heart was pounding as he approached the front doors of the manor. He steeled his nerves as he rang the bell.
A gray man in a stuffy suit sleepily opened the door. Law didn't wait for him to speak before forcing his way inside, knocking the man out before he knew what happened. Law had memorized the maps Nami made of the manor. He didn't know where she was, but he had an idea. He made his way quickly towards the surveillance room.
"And just what the fuck are you doing here?" Yonji stopped him before he could enter the room, almost amused at the fuming doctor who so boldly broke into their home.
"I'm here for Nami-ya."
Niji laughed, walking up to stand beside his brother. "Very chivalrous of you. The only problem is she isn't here."
"She is," Law stated firmly, moving the nodachi to rest casually on his shoulder.
Yonji rolled his eyes. "Trust me, doc. If your sweet little slice of a sister was here, I would know about it."
The two men moved forward, clearly ready to forcibly remove the annoyance in front of them.
"She came in through the west side entrance hidden behind hydrangeas." Both men stopped at his words. "She's with your brother."
The pair frowned at Law for a moment before turning to each other.
"They aren't on the third. I've been up there all night," Yonji stated.
"I've been on the first, between the billiards room and the kitchens," Niji added.
They paused listening for any sound on the second floor where they stood. Law ground his teeth, impatiently waiting for them to put the pieces together. If she was where he thought she was, Law would need their help getting inside quickly. After a few moments, Yonji slung open the door to the surveillance room. The guard sitting at the desk jumped in surprised.
"Why are these monitors turned off?" He demanded.
"Ma- Master Ichiji insisted-" The man stuttered before Niji's large hand gripped the top of his head painfully.
Niji leaned down to growl in the man's ear. "I don't give a shit what he insisted. Turn them back on before I pop your head like a grape."
The horrified man instantly turned everything on. The monitors lit back up, and it didn't take long to find them.
"Oh, fuck," Yonji exclaimed. "Not again."
Ichiji was inputting something into a machine with one hand while holding a disheveled Nami by the throat with the other.
*****
Satisfied with his work, Ichiji stepped away from the machine and finally released her.
She stumbled back until she bumped into a machine, still grasping at where his hand had been on her throat.
"I needed you to stay still while I finished setting this up." He said matter-of-factly while grabbing something from a nearby table.
He came closer until he was directly in front of her. As he leaned in, she instinctively turned her face away, not wanting to know what shade of red his eyes might be at that moment. Her eyes widened suddenly as she saw a large pair staring back at her from above. The surveillance snails were back on. She looked pleadingly at whoever was watching.
"Nami." He turned her face to look at him. "We don't have much time. I need you to be calm."
He leaned down slightly, exposing her leg through the high slit in her dress. She whimpered, silently praying Law wouldn't leave her to whatever fate Ichiji had planned. She felt a sharp pain in her leg and looked down to see him empty a syringe into her thigh.
"What was that?!" She cried, trying to push him away from her. It was like trying to move a concrete wall.
"It won't be long now." He brushed a strand of hair from her face that was stuck to her tear stained cheek. He continued to caress her face, completely ignoring her fruitless struggling. She felt her racing heart start to slow. Arms reluctantly falling to her sides, she swayed on her feet. Ichiji steadied her with a hand on her waist. His other hand moved from her face to her collar bone, delicately grazing the red marks left on her neck before landing on the necklace he had given her. "Soon I won't be able to hurt you anymore. No one will be able to hurt you."
He pulled away suddenly, moving just fast enough to avoid the large sword striking upward in the exact location he previously stood. At least she thought he was fast enough. Ichiji was several feet away after making his quick escape, and he was looking down at his hand, which was now missing two fingers. Rage filled the once calm face as he slowly looked up at his attacker.
"Nami-ya, time to go." Law said coolly, shaking the blood from his sword in one swift movement.
*****
Before he could attack, Ichiji was tackled by Niji and Yonji. Law made for the exit but stopped when he saw Nami stumble in the opposite direction into the back of the room.
Yonji's body flew past Law's face before slamming into one of the machines, utterly destroying it. Niji had his brother in a headlock and was pulling him backward. Ichiji's intact hand fumbled erratically until grasping something on the surface next to him. He thrust it sharply at the man behind him. Niji howled and released his captive, stumbling away. He sloppily pulled at the surgical tool that was now stuck deeply into his face, just below his visible eye. Blood poured from the wound as he fell to the floor. Ichiji's flaming red eyes burned into Law as he bared his teeth. A thick metal claw attached to a heavy chain shot out from behind Law to clamp down hard around Ichiji's neck, and Yonji emerged from the rubble to grapple his brother again.
Law spotted Nami peeking out from the other side of the partition. He instantly rushed to meet her, dodging the various mechanical items being thrown from the fight raging inside the lab. She was carrying something but was now struggling to stand. He lifted her into his arms without question, carrying her bridal style through the doors into the hallway.
Law entered the code Nami gave him for the elevator and heard a guttural scream as the doors closed. He ran full speed through the hallway until he burst through the front doors of the manor. He set Nami down gently in the backseat of one of the cars parked just outside. He pulled the driver out, ripped the keys from his hands, and threw him to the ground. He sped down the drive and through the city, only slowing down once they arrived at the pier.
Law pulled Nami from the backseat. She was fighting hard to stay conscious and clutching tightly to what he now realized was a large file binder. Incredible. He smiled to himself as he picked her up and rushed across the docks to the waiting submarine. They cast off the second Law's feet touched the deck, and he held her close as they moved away from the island.
Nami looked up at him through glassy eyes. "Ichiji..."
"It's ok, Nami-ya. He's-" Law stopped short when he looked back at the docks.
"...injected me..."
He looked back to Nami. "Shachi."
"Sir!" Shachi appeared before him instantly.
"Get Nami-ya to the infirmary. Take a blood sample, and make her comfortable. I'll be there shortly."
Shachi took the woman from his arms and disappeared below deck.
Law turned his attention back to the island. They had at least another minute or two before it was deep enough to safely submerge. He gripped his sword tightly, staring directly back at the man watching them from the edge of the dock. Ichiji's cape was torn to shreds. His other clothing looked burnt, and there was blood staining the side of his face and chest. He fell to one knee before letting out a painful, raging scream.
Law let out a breath and smirked. He entered the sub and latched the door behind him tightly. As much as he would have loved to watch Ichiji die, the sound of the emotionless man's fury was music to his ears, his own personal symphony.

The Ultimate Bridal Accessories Checklist
Tumblr media
Your wedding day is an incredibly significant event you've likely been looking forward to for a long time. It's only natural that you want to make it unforgettable. Choosing the ideal bridal accessories is one way to accomplish this. Although your dress may be the event's main attraction, accessories such as jewelry can further enhance its appeal. This article covers all the details about bridal accessories, from must-haves to practical but non-essential items. Essential Accessories Certain essential items are necessary on the day of a bride's wedding. Here are a few examples: Jewelry Every bride needs a beautiful set of wedding jewelry to complete her outfit. From a delicate necklace to a pair of stunning earrings and a bracelet, the right pieces can add a touch of elegance and sparkle to your overall look. It's important to select jewelry that complements your dress without taking away from its color and design. Veil  Choosing the right veil design and color can significantly enhance the beauty of your white wedding. The veil is an iconic symbol of modesty and purity, and you can choose between a traditional extended cover or a modern short style. Clutch A bridal clutch serves as a sophisticated emergency carry-all bag. However, selecting the perfect one can be challenging since it should not be overly large. Yet, it must have adequate space to accommodate all your necessities. Strive to balance these requirements and opt for a clutch that enhances your ensemble. Bridal shoes Selecting the right shoes is crucial to complete the bride's entire look. Opt for ones that perfectly match the wedding gown's design, jewelry, and other accessories. Of course, the most popular choice is always a pair of white or ivory shoes because it often matches the wedding dress. But you can also get other options in different colors, styles, and materials that may suit your preference and wedding themes. Bridal garter The bridal garter, a symbol of tradition and playfulness, is an essential accessory that adds a touch of whimsy to your wedding day ensemble and serves as a cherished keepsake to remember the joyous occasion. The tradition of bridal garters dates back to the 14th century in Europe and is still done today in countless weddings. These accessories are crucial in completing your wedding ensemble, ensuring you look and feel your best on your special day. These accessories are crucial in completing your wedding ensemble, ensuring you look and feel your best on your special day. The right hair accessory can add a touch of glamour to your hairstyle and create a princess-like feeling. So, what options do you have apart from the veil mentioned previously? Tiara This is your best option to add a regal look to your overall appearance. Tiaras come in various styles; you won't miss one that fits your fashion sense. Headbands: These are a simple yet practical addition to a bridal hairstyle. You can try a thin and delicate or broader and more ornate style. Haircombs: Secure your updo or add sparkle to your loose curls? Hair combs can be your ideal solution. Hairpins can also do the job. Before you decide on a hair accessory, consult your stylist, and consider your style and the overall theme of the wedding. Makeup and Beauty Accessories  If you're not a makeup artist (and even if you are), you'll likely have one on your wedding day. However, investing in high-quality makeup kits and brushes can help you retain the flawless look that lasts all day. You may want to consider including the following items: Foundation Choose the best foundation that matches your skin tone and type. Lipstick: A beautiful lipstick shade can add color and polish to your look. Go with an option that complements your skin tone and the wedding theme. Eyeliner: This solution helps define and accentuate your eyes. Choose a waterproof formula to prevent smudging and smearing. False lashes: They can help enhance your natural lashes and add drama to your eyes. Lashes that look natural and comfortable are ideal for the big day. Blush: A touch of blush can add a healthy glow to your cheeks. Makeup brushes: Quality makeup brushes are essential for achieving a flawless and blended look. A set of brushes that includes a variety of sizes and shapes is recommended. Hair styling tools: Depending on the bride's desired hairstyle, hair styling tools such as curling irons, straighteners, and hair dryers may be needed. Beauty blender: This sponge blends foundation and other makeup products for a seamless finish. Makeup setting spray: A setting spray can help makeup last longer and prevent smudging or melting.  The choice of bridal makeup depends on your preference. It's a good idea to collaborate with a team of expert artists to find the most suitable beauty accessories for your style. Additional Accessories Even with all the items and bridal features mentioned above, you can still add a few more accessories to enhance your look further. Consider the following options: Gloves: These timeless accessories can add a touch of vintage glamour to your outfit, while a garter is a fun and playful addition that can be a great keepsake. Shawl or wrap: A shawl or wrap can be a fantastic addition to your wedding day outfit, especially if you're getting married in a colder season. Floppy sun hat: This is an excellent choice to consider if you're holding a beach wedding. Belt or sash: These can help accentuate your waistline and add a touch of glamour to your dress. However, not all dresses require a belt, so be careful with this accessory, as it can work against you. Jacket: A jacket is an excellent option for a winter wedding and can add a touch of sophistication to your outfit. Choosing additional bridal accessories can be tricky because any mismatch can spoil your overall beauty. So, you must select a style that matches your wedding theme and personal style. Conclusion To sum up, choosing the right bridal accessories is essential to make your wedding day go well. Your accessories should reflect both your personality and the theme of the event. Essential accessories like jewelry, veils, clutches, bridal shoes, hair accessories, and makeup can help you achieve a stunning and unforgettable look. Don't forget to add fun with traditional items like the bridal garter. Seeking expert advice and staying true to your style and wedding theme will help you create a bridal look that will be cherished for years. Read the full article

Christina Aguilera looks flawless in gorgeous gown for the Latin Grammys
Christina Aguilera always steals the show at award shows due to her iconic sense of fashion, and her latest outfit was one of her most daring to date. The Somos Nada songstress was attending the Latin Grammys, and in a post, she shared ahead of the awards, she looked phenomenal in a striking see-through gown. The red-hot outfit featured mesh detailing around her bust and ran up her arms, exposing the bare skin underneath, as she sultrily stared into the camera while holding up some of the train of the outfit to her neck.
Christina's hair was styled to perfection, with the singer opting for twin ponytails in her signature platinum blonde. She was also impressed with her jewelry, stunning with a gorgeous diamond necklace.
In a simple caption, she posted: "La Reina," and added a crown emoji, as well as tagging all the people who made her iconic look possible. However, the daring red frock wasn't her only outfit of choice, as she took to the stage during the ceremony where she wore an entirely different look.
Stepping out to accept the Spirit of Hope award, the singer looked ravishing in a black latex dress that highlighted all of her incredible curves. Fans loved the red look, as one enthused: "Wonderful and majestic was the performance of #LaReina. AMAZING STANDING OVATION I love you, Queen. We're super proud of you."
Drag Race star Yara Sofia called her "gorg," while another fan commented: "You killed it." La Reina Aguilera. Another shared: "Love that beautiful smile," while many more followers posted strings of flame and heart emojis.
Earlier this week, the star wowed when she posted a series of breathtaking dusk pictures of herself wearing a beautiful silver silk slip dress that caught the moonlight.
The stunning gown showed off Christina's hourglass figure as she twirled under the starlight with her platinum blonde tresses flying free. The accompanying image caption revealed what the starlit photoshoot was in aid of.
Christina's message to fans read: "La Luz. Pre-Save now" with a white heart emoji, which revealed that the next and final part of her new Spanish-language album, titled, "Aguilera," is on its way and will be titled "La Luz," meaning "the light."

Goodness do I have a treat for all of you today. Larry McQueen, owner of The Collection has sent me a lovely sighting filled with detailed information. Because the detail is frankly incredible, I decided not to edit it and present Larry’s notes in full below:

In 1936, Travis Banton, head designer at Paramount Studios, began work on the last film he would design for his favorite clotheshorse, Marlene Dietrich. The duo had worked closely together on all her films at Paramount and created the “Dietrich style”-- a look of lavish, smoldering, hard-edged sophistication that was instrumental in creating the Dietrich legend.
Dietrich had one final film to complete her contract at Paramount and was cast in a typical Dietrich vehicle Angel, a sophisticated Lubitsch melodrama with her in the role of an ignored wife of means who has an affair with her husband’s friend. Banton designed the most opulent dress he had ever created for the star for the under-five-minute opera sequence and preceding scenes in the film. The ensemble was to become known as the “Faberge” gown and consisted of a fitted long-sleeve bodice with peplum, a matching long skirt with train and a six foot stole bordered with sable. The fabric was solidly embroidered with gold beads, pearls, rhinestones, gold bullion, gold sequins and faux ruby and emerald stones in geometric designs. According to W. Robert Levine in his book “In A Glamorous Fashion,” the costume was cost-listed on the wardrobe records at $8,000.00, an exorbitant price in the post-depression era and a price that would be over $100,000.00 by today’s standards. The expense must have caused stirrings in Paramount’s upper management in a time when the government was asking the studios to scale back the unnecessary lavishness in costume design. Banton himself once said it was the most expensive gown he had ever designed.
The ensemble is given credit in many film costume books as the most spectacular gown ever created. Diana Vreeland, one-time curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art said of the costume in the book “Hollywood Costume– Glamour! Glitter! Romance!” “When I think of detail, I think of Travis Banton’s marvelous beaded dress for Marlene Dietrich in Angel—like a million grains of golden caviar. That is one of the most beautiful dresses ever…”. Margaret J. Bailey in her book Those Glorious Glamour Years describes the dress “It was simple in lines, of Persian design, and looked like a piece of woven jewelry…”  and “… caused no little trauma on the set when producers refused to give it to Dietrich for her private wardrobe.”
Dietrich had loved the gown and asked the studio if she could keep it. It is said she was so angry of being refused by the company she help save, she stormed off the set. The incident no doubt added to her disharmonious departure from the studio. She left the studio and did not return until a decade later. Acquiring gowns and props from her films- by whatever means- was a general practice of Ms. Dietrich. After her death, The German Film Archive Foundation (die Stiftung Deutsche Kinemathek) and The Berlin Film Museum acquired her estate in 1993, which consisted of five different storehouses in Europe and the USA. In the collection were thousands of items from her career including fifty of her most famous film gowns. Her daughter, Maria Riva, once told the curator of the Frankfurt Film Museum, her mother was always in constant fear the studios would someday try to take back her collection and had kept the fact of its existence well hidden.

Paramount, however, retained the piece and began to put it to use. Re-using costumes was a common practice by studios to maintain an opulent look to secondary and background characters without the expense of making new ones. It is unknown exactly how many films the Dietrich gown was used in, but from photos found, it is obvious it was put to work and went through many transformations in the process. Mary Astor wore it, without the stole on the set of Midnight, 1939. The front was reworked and worn by Rose Hobart in the film A Night at Earl Carrolls, 1940. It was used in publicity photos as in that of Loraine Day circa 1944. With the sleeves removed, the stole without the fur was added to the front of the bodice as draping, it was worn by Felicia Atkins in The Errand Boy, 1961. The stole was cut in half to be used as a turban and worn with a sleeveless altered bodice by a model in A New Kind of Love, 1963. In 1974, the bodice was put back together and used by Diana Vreeland in the MET exhibition of films fashion and in 1985, the gown and stole was returned to its original configuration and worn by Barbara Hershey in the TV movie My Wicked Wicked Ways.
With all the different uses, the pieces took a beating. Many of the “re-workings” were fast and crude and some of the attempts to repair the gown involved covering damaged areas with large gold sequins. One previous ‘restoration’ involved applying glue to areas and pushing the beads back together and letting it harden. The fine chiffon backing was weak and starting to split and the patterns were separating.    The costume was so fragile, it could never be worn again, but it is amazing the pieces stayed together.
In December of 1990, Paramount put the gown up for auction at Christies New York as part a larger collection of ‘star wardrobe.’  Larry McQueen and his late business partner, Bill Thomas, who were respected experts in the field of film costumes and had compiled one of the finest collections of the medium under the name “The Collection,” were retained to help inventory, authenticate and price the collection and were overwhelmed to see, what they believed to be, the most exquisite film costume ever created. They were successful in purchasing it for a total cost of approximately $23,000.00, one of the highest prices at the auction. As excited as they were to own the gown, the reality of its condition soon set in. Due to the age of the garment, poor storage and multiple alterations, it could never be dressed on a mannequin because it would not support its own extreme weight.
In 1999, four years after Bill Thomas died, Larry McQueen began the process of restoring the costume. Museum experts in preservation and restoration were consulted and much debate occurred as to whether the integrity of the gown- however poor that integrity was- should be tampered with. It was finally decided by Mr. McQueen that instead of leaving it as it was- a box of un-showable beads- the ensemble should be restored. Getson/Eastern Embroidery, who was then owned by Annie Dernderian, was approached with working on the gown. The firm had worked on the original costume and luckily had many of the beads, sequins and stones used on the original construction.
But, restoration of the garment proved far more difficult than planned. Even though the gown had only taken weeks to create, it would take years to restore. Every inch of the beadwork would have to be attached to new chiffon backing and the patterns pulled into shape and lightly tacked. Then the patterns had to be permanently hand stitched, replacing any missing stones or beads. Previous poor repairs would have to be removed. Missing areas or areas that had been glued would have to be replaced. Many of the original silk threads that attached the beads were breaking and would have to be reinforced with new silk thread. The stole, which had been cut in half and then stacked on top of its self and re-sewn, had to be taken apart, attached to a new backing and the beading attached and corrected.   Photographs of Dietrich wearing the costume were enlarged to determine what was an original pattern and what had been changed. Luckily, the patterns did repeat themselves, so where a pattern was missing, a template of an existing pattern was made to re-create the missing one. The task would involve going inch by inch and would involve thousands of hours and great expense. But, determined to see the gown restored, Larry McQueen had the work begun.
The gown could not be taken apart and beaded flat as it was originally constructed, so a special frame with a sling had to be constructed to allow access to the inside of the garment to work from the front and the back of the fabric. Beads and sequins that had to be removed were sorted and reattached in to same location if possible. Only a four-inch area could be worked on at one time and each area was photographed before and after to document the work done. The project was daunting.
The entire fabric of the costume is composed of repeating geometric shapes somewhat like a paisley pattern. Each shape is outlined with small pearls or faceted rhinestones. Beads, pearls or sequins in different combinations fill the center portions of the design. Throughout, are patterns that contain a small grid work of bullion threading and each square filled with small pearls, sequins or a combination of sequins and gold beads. The background is of solid gold rocaille beads and the gown is sporadically studded with emerald and red glass beads. Literally millions of beads were used to create the fabric of the ensemble.
After one year, only the bodice was approaching completion, most of the work done by Annie Denderian. But the expense was mounting and it was becoming impossible to find qualified people who had the patience and time to spend on the garment. Mr. McQueen decided that if the costume was to be completed, he would have to take over the bulk of the hands-on restoration. Having the background and more importantly the motivation to see the gown completed, he was mentored by Ms. Denderian, learning and perfecting the techniques to painstakingly re-attach the patterns and began work on the dress. Almost one year to the date of beginning the work- working faithfully five to eight hours a day- the skirt and the stole were completed. To add strength, bias tape reinforcing and a new silk chiffon lining was added by the costume house of John David Ridge and the stole was re-bordered by using existing sable by Judith Moss at LA Fur Center.
McQueen stated that he probably would have reconsidered restoring the gown had he know the time, patience and expense it was going to take, but then quickly adds that he would have done it anyway. It was just too important. In working that closely with the piece, McQueen was amazed how in touch you get with the people who originally created the garment (a process difficult to understand unless you have restored someone else’s creation). You could tell when someone was having a bad day and cutting corners. You could tell when someone was struck with genius. You could see the differences in workmanship and technique between the various beaders. You could see the time spent on details in areas that no one would ever see. You become very close to the garment and understand it.
The gown is truly a testament to the artistry of early Hollywood. Mr. McQueen is confident the care, attention and over 3000 hours spent in its restoration would make its original creators proud. He hopes that if he leaves any legacy to the field of film costumes, one of his main accomplishments will be the “Faberge gown” survives in the splendor it was originally created and will be shown and appreciated for generations to come.
