When FASA started putting out the Star Trek RPG, there was the original series, the cartoon, two films and a large number of (often contradictory) novels. While most of this material establishes a universe, it does so primarily in single servings that are, for the most part, definitively resolved at the end of the episode. This didn’t leave much of a universe for an RPG to explore, so FASA needed to either resign itself to re-enacting old stories or making up their own universe. They chose the latter (and did a good enough job that when Star Trek said the FASA stuff was out of canon, people flipped their lids). The Triangle (1985) is one of the best parts of the FASA Trek universe and where the RPG really comes into its own.
Its born out of a need for a slice of space where the rules don’t apply. It’s a neutral zone formed by the edges of the Federation, the Klingon Empire and the Romulan Empire. The idea is that players who are part of the Federation (the default for the game) can go there and not worry so much about protocol. It also let players try other crew types, like merchants or pirates, without having to worry about pesky laws. The Star Wars expanded universe would create a similar wild west in the galactic rim, for similar reasons.
This book (sweet cover by David Martin) is basically an atlas of worlds (weirdly illustrated with photos of Earth depicting each planet’s dominant biosphere, but love the silly character portraits too) supplemented but details of the various factions and their military forces in the sector. It’s the perfect amount of details for GMs to set the stage with and for players to get into trouble with.

Let's discuss the cube and the triangle.
You know what since I've got some triangle lore to work off of. Let's try and re-explain the cube.
So the cube was the first object that I made under the idea of a dimensional travel McGuffin. The whole idea of the cube is based off of one line from Golden Freddy. Basically saying that the star was some sort of object made from a certain object that came from the magic well from the world or something. I don't remember the line. Just that it said that basically objects come out of magic wells every once in a while and they can have various properties. The one moon had just happened to control creation.
My little brain said "It would be really cool if the different objects control different sort of areas of the dimensional worlds." And so the cube was born out of the idea that another magical object could be made.
Now the cube of course sideline from this idea, but it's still holds true. I just changed it a bit to be a dimensional consistent. Basically every dimension has a star. Whether it is made by Moon, being made by somebody, or just kind of existed. There has always been a star. But the star is all about creation, It can't mess with other worlds. And that's what the cube was.
What if there is a magical object with just as much power as the star but a controlled dimensions? Particularly in the travel of it.
This is the main idea of the cube is centered around. Basically it is a version of this dimensional control star thing. But where it actually came from is the pickle. There has been a long standing uncertain lore that the cube was basically a time paradox item. Basically moon made the cube to stop the cube, and infinite paradox. But I never was quite settled on this idea. Although it did fit with what I wanted.
The triangle though points out a very specific little thing. Wither storms are actually the bane of dimensions. They travel dimensions, and destroy dimensions. And while they cannot create them they do have some sort of domain on them.
So trying to figure out how to get the triangle to have an actual lore. I said that it came from a wither storm. That basically it either was around the wither storm, or came from its corpse and Sun and Moon lead it back.
This idea actually helps to get a creation story for the cube. While the time paradox is fun I never liked it. The cube coming from the remains of a wither storm though is very interesting. Whether it is created as some sort of after effect or otherwise. The cube, the triangle, and probably a circle at some point, All basically come from the leftovers of a wither storm. They carry dimensional domain and are chaotic because of their origin.
The cube of course has a home dimension that it locks to. Putting people in dimensions randomly but taking them back home. The drawback being no control over any of this.
The triangle does not have a home dimension. It still takes you to random dimensions. But you have more control. Although it is not finite.
If the circle ever needs to exist it will probably be the one with the most control. Since circles are just stable objects.
But who knows. They are rare artifacts that come from wither storms and connect to a person that they decide. Tormenting them for the rest of eternity.
