I don’t want to be that one med student but today I shadowed at the clinic again and this one dementia patient was so hard on herself when she got questions wrong and it made me want to cry several times for so many fucking reasons. I felt so bad for her but it also felt like being slapped in the face w the age I fear so hard (which is not getting old so much as reaching your 70s-80s and starting to become completely hopeless). And I could tell she was tearing herself apart for it and I felt so bad for her bc feeling your mental faculties fade away must be so hard

I have figured out what annoys me about dark magic in Elden ring. None of it is scary enough
Let me first elaborate what i mean with "dark magic". When i say that i just mean" magic that is against or opposite to the current status quo". Lava sorcery is dark magic, so is death sorcery, also frenzied flame spells, and black flame. Magic that is considered heretical or blasphemous.
Because elden ring has many forces trying take the lands between at once, none of them feel as antagonistic to the current order as The Dark did to the Age of Fire.
I am not calling The Dark evil or anything, Im no bootlicker. When I say that the dark was scarier, I mean that Gwyn would shit himself if he ever saw someone cast this:
Tumblr media
God he would be horrified. What is this ball pf pure fire extinguishing darkness doing here? Why is it looking at me??
Dude literally killed himself to prevent something like this from existing. It goes against everything he worked for.
Now, I honestly cant imagine any of the current heretic schools of magic scaring Marika to that extent. Probably because Marika was a girlboss that committed genocide on anything that threatened her, but anyways.
Like:
- Frenzied flame would be a good candidate, it is a threat to everything and very scary. But the lack of spells and of, frankly, influence hurts its image for me
- Rot is scary, has influence and is a threat. But two spells dont make a school of magic. Also not really dark magic if its approved by the Greater Will.
-Im sure Firegiant magic was threatening at some point lmfao.
-Death spells still largely consist of deathbird magic, which is a severely weakened group from a past age.
-Gonna be honest, Rykard didnt do a very good job with his god devouring. Aldrich at least got one. Not very threatening to the order rn.
-and finally black flame, another weakened group that used to be a threat.
Now, this all can change with the DLC
Tumblr media
If that is indeed an erdtree being choked by a deathroot tree, which some people theorised, then we have our villain to the order. Godwyn is scary, a threat, influential, and would theoretically get more spells in the dlc.
Plus itd be literally black magic, as in colored black, which i love. All the others feel to bright and colorful

There is something just... so satisfying about enchanting Cazador's weapon with daylight... forcing him to carry a sphere of pure sun that chips him for 20 damage per turn. :)
Get fucked, my good sir.

Ok I have a theory about how Macaque and Wukong's friendship-crumble went down and I wanna get it out before the S4 special airs in case it reveals what happened.
I'm not entirely sure on the specific details, but I think I have pretty good theory of what happened in general.
Alright so
Tumblr media
Azure Lion: "However, fate had one more cruel twist for us."
Azure Lion: "Sun Wukong now yielded to an agent of the Celestial Host, another warrior for the oppressors."
(Episode 8 of Season 4, The Brotherhood)
I think the start of the betrayal happened when Wukong was discovered to have "yielded" to the Celestial Realm. (I say yielded in air quotes cause I'm not entirely sure how that whole situation came about, only that the Brotherhood interpreted it as a betrayal).
Peng: "Wukong is a traitor, he'll end us the first chance he gets!"
Macaque: "I just think we should consider other options-"
(Episode 5 of Season 4, Court of the Yellow Robed Demon)
As shown in Episode 5 of Season 4, the Brotherhood were quick to believe that Wukong had betrayed them, and would dispose of them as soon as possible, so they wanted to strike him down first before he could get the chance to do so to them. Macaque, however, seemed to be hesitant. Whether this was him still having some faith in Wukong or him not wanting to get smashed into dust by Wukong or some weird mixture of the two I'm not sure, but there is one thing I'm sure of:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Azure Lion: "My former brother was sent to destroy us and all we had built. It was with their combined power that we were cut down, imprisoned within the scroll, left to the mercy of the Celestial Court."
(Episode 8 of Season 4, The Brotherhood)
Macaque was not present when the Brotherhood fought the Pilgrims. Meaning he'd left the Brotherhood of his own volition.
(As for the betrayal with the Brotherhood, I think the Brotherhood actually did the betraying here. Recall how Tang overheard their plan to trap Monkey King in the scroll? That was before they themselves had been sealed in it. My guess is that they tried to enact their plan, but it failed, and they ended up sealed in the scroll instead.)
But anyway, back to Macaque.
My guess is that he heard about the Brotherhood being sealed in the scroll later on, or perhaps even witnessed a part of the debacle himself (spectating from the shadows of course), and couldn't believe that Wukong would actually do that to his sworn brothers.
So he went to go spy on Wukong and the Pilgrims.
And he'd see them being good friends.
And he'd get really mad.
These were the people that Wukong had betrayed his sworn brothers for? Did he replace his sworn brothers? Did Wukong replace Macaque?
And basically emotions boil over and up and Macaque decides "I'm gonna fucking kill that human."
And so when Sanzang was alone, Macaque shapeshifted into Wukong and tried to kill the monk.
Only for Wukong to stop him.
And they fight.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Episode 4 of Season 3, The Winning Side)
Eventually, Wukong strikes Macaque to the ground, and this moment occurs.
But notice how Macaque is facing away from Wukong?
He knows Wukong is behind him, but he can't actually see Wukong.
Furthermore, look at Macaque's scarred eye:
Tumblr media
(Episode 9 of Season 1, Macaque)
That is not a wound that is left by being struck by a staff.
So what if the following occurred:
Macaque is laying on the ground, facing away from Wukong.
Wukong, instead of finishing him off, instead leaves, feeling betrayed because someone who was once his best friend had tried to kill his new friends, and had stolen his identity.
And knowing Wukong's speed, he's over the horizon before a single second can pass.
But Macaque still thinks that Wukong is behind him.
And as the shadow monkey picks himself up off the floor, he notices the shadow of something looming over him from behind.
Thinking it's Wukong, Macaque stares in confusion as the shadow raises it's staff, though one end of the weapon remains within the figure's shadow.
"Wukon-?"
A searing pain as he's stabbed through the head, the end of the weapon coming out of his right eye, though he can't quite see it. All he knows is that his once best friend had just killed him.
He dies, and the murderer pulls their now bloody spear out of his head.

Do the other kids get weapons in First Frost to defend themselves and if it's not too spoiler-y what are they?
They do! After the Battle of the Bridge Blinky takes the four to meet with a weapons smith and collector in Trollmarket, hoping to find suitable weapons that they can use to properly protect themselves.
Claire already has Daylight and she’s barred from touching any other magic objects after the ‘grit shaka’ incident.
The kids are allowed to look around the shop, told to find what resonates best with them. Mary drags a wicked looking mace from a pile of other deadly weapons. Toby finds his hammer, already chock full of a wary sort of gravity magic, linked to the earth.
Darci is unsure of her choices, but the weapon smith offers her two dual swords, shorter than any long sword but wickedly efficient in a pair. She loves them so much she ends up naming them later.
Jim unfortunately doesn’t find anything in particular that resonates with him, which is fine Blinky promises there’s plenty of other options. He just wasn’t expecting Jim to take that quite literally when getting his hands on the Shadow Staff.

"Sullied" = damaged so that it is no longer pure.
Sellen: "Glintstone is the amber of the cosmos. Golden amber contains the remnants of ancient life, and houses its vitality, while glintstone contains residual life, and thus the vitality of the stars."
Raya Lucaria Robes: "Those who dedicate themselves to the study of glintstones formed from starry amber receive this modest yet elegant deep navy garb after making their vows of virtue and austerity."
Founding Rain of Stars: "The glimpse of the primeval current that the astrologer saw became real, and the stars' amber rained down on this land."
Amber Medallions: "The Erdtree's old sap becomes amber, treasured as the most precious of jewels in the age of Godfrey, the first Elden Lord. A primordial life energy resides inside."
Miquellan Knight's Sword: "[…] modeled after those carried by Carian knights. Instead of glintstone however, amber from the Haligtree is embedded in the blade."
Amber houses remnants of life/vitality + known producers of amber are the Erdtree, the Haligtree, and the stars (all things that are "living" in some way)

Deathroot growing upwards from Godwyn's corpse at the Erdtree roots, creating its own tree-like spire.

The twisting pattern of the staff, said to be a "part of the Prince of Death," somewhat reminiscent of the new tree wrapping itself around the Erdtree, which is seemingly bleeding sap.
