What are some texts that aren't impossible to find that explore the basics of, or a wide scope of, improvised/wilderness/austere medicine?
My absolute favorite is Improvised Medicine by Kenneth V. Iserson. (available for probably not super legal download here- but it worked for me).
It's now in it's second edition. It's expensive if you do want to buy it (I found it between $48-$100), and it's designed for people who are already healthcare providers, but it's not afraid to be like "You have one ventilator and 4 people that need vents? Here's how to make that work." He goes way outside what everyone in the medical world is comfortable with, and even says things like "well I wouldn't do this, but I don't know your situation, so maybe try x/y/z". So I really like this book.
My other favorite is Where There Is No Doctor by David Werner. (available free here).
This one is designed for people who are not medical professionals, but who are living or working in extremely resource-poor environments, where doctors and healthcare facilities may be totally unavailable, or so far away it would take incredible effort to get someone there.
Another one I would check out is Wilderness and Remote First Aid Emergency Reference Guide by the American Red Cross and Boy Scouts of America (available free here).
This one is good if you just want kind of a bare-bones primer of the most common illnesses and injuries occurring in the backcountry, as well as a framework for assessment, treatment, and decision making. As someone who has taught from this curriculum, I like it better than most of the other similar ones.
If you like that and want something more in-depth, I recommend Expedition and Wilderness Medicine by Bledsoe, Manyak & Townes. If you want something cheaper, I recommend the Oxford Handbook of Expedition and Wilderness Medicine by Johnson, Anderson, & Dallimore.
Auerbach's Wilderness Medicine by Paul Auerbach is a classic and in it's 7th edition. If you're interested in specifically disaster med, I'd look into Ciottone's Disaster Medicine by Gregory Ciottone.

Oxford Handbook of Emergency Medicine 5th Edition PDF Free Download
The book Oxford Handbook of Emergency Medicine is written by Jonathan P. Wyatt, Robert G. Taylor, Kerstin De Wit, and Emily J. Hotton. “The text is straight to the point, concise, informative, and educational which also helps to improve patient care. Yet it is surprisingly comprehensive for the size of the book and a lot of common and less common situations are covered in significant depth. This…

What Exactly Is Emergency Medicine?
Emergency medicine is a branch of medicine that treats illnesses and injuries that require immediate medical attention. Emergency physicians are constantly learning how to treat patients of all ages who do not have a regular doctor's appointment. As a result, they must be prepared for any unplanned situations. They must also be qualified and licensed to practice in their field.
The field of emergency medicine has many distinguishing features, such as the diverse patients it treats and the high percentage of direct patient contact. Because of the high level of patient contact, emergency physicians can have a significant impact on their patients' health. Emergency doctors see patients of all ages and treat a wide range of illnesses, including heart, lung, gastrointestinal, and bone and joint issues.
Emergency medicine has evolved into an academic discipline. In 1971, the first resident trainees began their training. The University of Southern California had the longest-running program. Later, the Medical College of Pennsylvania established its own residency program in emergency medicine. Early residency programs were typically two years long and followed an internship. In the 1980s, the residency program required 36 months of total training, which was later increased to four years. Different emergency medicine residency programs had different requirements, but all of them had clinical rotations and exams.
Emergency medicine is a difficult field to work in. It does, however, provide numerous advantages to those who choose it. Emergency physicians can treat almost any illness or injury, and some are even able to perform life-saving procedures. Patients of all ages and backgrounds can be treated by emergency physicians. They can also help people who are dependent on drugs or alcohol, have broken bones, or have problems with their mental health.
Emergency physicians must have strong critical-thinking skills in order to diagnose a variety of medical conditions. Because their patients may be unable to communicate their symptoms, and some may even be unconscious, they must maintain a level head and perform mental checklists. They must think quickly and make the best decisions for their patients during an emergency.
The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) is a medical professional organization. Its membership includes over 5000 emergency medicine physicians. The ACEP also organizes conferences on various aspects of emergency medicine. Its members are eligible to apply for board certification in their field. There are also several subspecialties of emergency medicine, such as pediatric emergency medicine. Furthermore, emergency physicians may choose to specialize in other fields.
Despite its broad scope, emergency medicine is a specialty that necessitates extensive research and practice. There are numerous excellent online resources for learning more about the specialty. The Oxford Handbook of Emergency Medicine is one such resource that emergency medicine professionals highly recommend. It includes useful advice for emergency physicians. There are also a number of podcasts that cover emergency medicine. The Resus Room is a podcast website dedicated to emergency medicine discussions.
In the emergency room, emergency physicians evaluate patients to determine the best course of action for their situation. Some patients are treated and discharged, while others are hospitalized or referred to a specialist. During an average ED week, emergency physicians may see patients with walk-in trauma, heart attacks, and decompensated heart failure.

Hey! As far as i unferstood from your page, you are a doctor. Well, i have a strange question 😅
Why some people, after breaking up, go to the hospital and doctors or nurses put the patient on a drip? Why people need to be on drip after breaking up? Is it a tranquillizer? Thank you...
I'm a Doc by my country's passing standard.. I hope I could help ☺️ You mean breaking up from a romantic relationship? It is hard when we don't know the patient's condition. First at the ER, we do vital signs check like blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate etc.. making sure they're alert and stable. If they're good, we ask them how we could help them (medical history) and do physical/lab/supporting examination based on their complaints. You might get chest exam (we check your lungs and heart), ECG for chest pain. If the problem is psychological in nature, we must assess futher.
Or it may just be fluid, people often dehydrate when they forget to drink for hours. Could be painkillers? 🤔 If the patient can take tablets, (or no indications for drip/injected drugs), we don't give injected or infused drugs. Tranquilizers are given for patients who are overly agitated, violent, or when oral treatment fails. We would also consult a psychiatrist.
Tranqulilizers used could be sedatives (like lorazepam) or anti-psychotic (haloperidol). Like listed below. We also check whether they have certain heart disease before giving haloperidol + promethazine.

P.S. Sorry I could only speculate 😅

I love how the oxford’s handbook of emergency medicine, in their advice section to junior doctors in the ER for the first time, straight up tell you to, and this is an actual quote from the book, “never lose your cool in public”.
other books tell you to be professional, do what’s asked of you by seniors, and try your best when you’re alone, but these people just know and I love them for it lmao
